thinking about how the theme of letting go (and the related motif of critically examining long-held beliefs/relationships) appears with the companions.
there's arcade and veronica, who were raised in insular environments and surrounded by enemies their entire lives, who fundamentally disagree with the politics of those groups, and who have to find a way to reconcile the love and loyalty they have for the only families they've ever known with their personal ideologies and goals.
while cassidy and crimson caravans aren't major factions in the vein of the ncr/enclave/brotherhood, cass' quest also revolves around whether she upholds the legacy of her family or follows her own path.
boone is disillusioned with the ncr after the bitter springs massacre but still wears his first recon beret, perhaps as a sign of lingering loyalty, or perhaps as penance. he participated in a horrible war crime because he was following orders, because that mindset was drilled into him since he joined the military. he's not as ideologically opposed to the ncr as arcade and veronica are to the enclave and brotherhood, respectively, but the similarity is worth noting.
what makes these companion quests so memorable is that we're meeting these characters at critical crossroads in their lives, where they have to come to terms with complicated attachments, where they'll define themselves by whether they choose to hang on to a legacy or strike out on their own.
#there's also revenge as a theme but that's another post#and that's to say nothing of how the dlc handle this theme—there are some great posts circulating already#to which i don't have anything substantial to add atm. though at some point i want to dig into that revenge element as well#it's obviously tied up with the inability to let go but there's the old world blues nostalgia vs. elijah & joshua's power hunger#vs. ulysses desire for justice#and there's benny and his ambition and the courier and their myriad motives#it's a good game#arcade gannon#veronica santangelo#rose of sharon cassidy#craig boone#for auld lang syne#i could make you care#heartache by the number#i forgot to remember to forget#fallout: new vegas

I kind of liked them both so there's two versions.
I've been playing around with brushes today. This is my MC from @thelonelyshore-if's game, Rivera Posey, fae is a true crime podcaster, really big into all that. But doesn't believe anything in this town being magical, like the fog is just fog right? totally not keeping faer trapped there nope.
but yeah I don't know I wanted to try something for fog.
#My Drawings#the lonely shore#it's a good game#love having a character stuck somewhere magical and they don't believe in magic

Can I just say I super appreciate Deadlock's early game? Like, wow. No long hero pick phase (that can sometimes spark arguments when one guy picks a hero someone else wants). No deciding which lane to go in (also, a potential argument point when 2 or more people decide they want mid). You pick which heroes you'd like to play as before queuing, it assigns you a lane by plopping you onto a zip line, and then as soon as you land, the game begins. Quick, clean, and eliminating 2 potential toxic triggers for people. It's nice.
Also, the laning phase itself is a lot more engaging. You can harass without worrying about running out of mana every five seconds and getting last hits and denies is a lot more engaging.
The start of Dota 2 matches was always the worst/the most boring part and Deadlock fixes that. As someone who played Dota 2 for 4.7k hours, I like it very much.
Also, not related, but I got to play a couple of new heroes today, including Calico and ooh, I love her. I don't know if I necessarily vibe with her play style but she's got a cute little shoulder kitty and her cat statues have such cute little meows when they're attacking. Adorable!
And they added another scrungly lady in the form of Viper, who I didn't get to play but hope to soon because she looks cool. And I hope to get to play Fathom before his inevitable nerf because he seems pretty busted right now.
#deck speaks#let's play deck#deadlock#deadlock game#I'm fully sucked into this game now#I had a long bad losing streak that almost had me thinking about quitting#but then I switched my main to Viscous and found the light again#it's a good game#unbalanced and rough especially some of the test heroes but fun#I'm really glad I gave it a chance

8, 14, 15, 16 for the fandom love ask game (any media you feel like chatting about)
8. you hope more people will come to appreciate
Overall, I just want more Ace Attorney fans to play and appreciate The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles in general. Everyone who plays it seems to enjoy it, but our numbers are small compared to the mainline games. The storytelling and the gameplay is just fantastic in this one and I just want more people to experience it, because it's worth it. It's even more worth it to go through the story completely blind, but even if you do get inevitable spoilers that come from being on the Internet at large, learning the context behind those spoilers is still emotional.
14. the ship that always makes you smile
My feelings about it have been a roller coaster, but I eventually settled on the more positive ones - I adore Wrightworth/Narumitsu. Their interactions in the first trilogy and all the story beats they hit were just amazing. There's a reason they have a lot of fan work and analysis to this day. The foundation is solidly there in the first trilogy and there are many directions people can go from that foundation (whether or not they include the second trilogy is up to them.)
15. the character that always makes you smile
So many of them (in mainline and the spinoffs in Ace Attorney) - but if I picked the first name that came to mind of course it's Miles Edgeworth. He is just everything to me. He's a sassy rival to Phoenix. He's a tortured soul who is haunted by his past. He's a big brother figure to Franziska and Kay. He's got hilarious banter between himself and Gumshoe. And he also won't back down against the truly corrupt and powerful. He's a hero, and icon and he's got style.
16. a tiny detail in canon that you want more people to appreciate
I don't know what makes a detail "tiny" since different people notice different things about stories in general. But I guess I have to talk about Van Zieks here and something I don't see mentioned about him a lot (from my scrolling on Tumblr. This might have been mentioned elsewhere.)
What sets Van Zieks apart from a lot of rival prosecutors in the Ace Attorney series is that he actually doesn't do anything unethical. Yes, he's rude and over the top with his bottle flipping and chalice throwing. And I will not ignore his racism either because it's so in your face from the very first case you encounter him. But he doesn't forge evidence and never even entertains the thought of doing so. He doesn't intimidate witnesses, bribe the judge or try and rule over the courtroom with an iron fist. He never blackmails anyone. And without giving away too many spoilers, there is more to him than being "The Reaper of the Bailey."
So I guess his moral code is what makes me see him as redeemable, as well as his character development in later parts of Chronicles.
There are arguments about whether or not his arc was handled well, but I think it was written decent enough for me to get what it was going for and accept it.

Playing Jack Jeanne has been fun so far
Suzu's route was like staring at something so bright and sparkly that it actually hurts to look at
And Sou's route was like being punched in the head repeatedly while also being forced to look at my teenage self in a sort of concussive Clockwork Orange situation
Anyway good game!
#jack jeanne#it's a good game#mitsuki route next i hope this one isn't also targeted at me specifically

I just noticed that in Marvel Midnight Suns, they don't actually pull the camera back when you go outside, they shrink your character model.

I like to play a game called "Go onto any online marketplace, type in 'antiques' to see what's being sold and then spent a good 2 weeks fighting with myself about if that giant copper diving helmet someone is selling for 150 bucks is a once in a lifetime opportunity or actually a huge waste of space in my small apartment"
