Gay wrongs tournament, round 2 of the losers bracket
Propaganda:
For John and Jack:
So, they both are literal murders. One of them is a little bit more insane than the other. Okay, the little bit part is not right, totally insane that is John, yes. But gonna love him though. He had been in rehab for alcohol, drugs, sex and murder. Don't kiss him, he might be wearing poisoning lipstick. They are canon mlm. They had been stuck in a two week time loop for five years, which was like leading a married life for them. They didn't actually marry, but they were partners, both in business and sexually. They worked together for an time agency. Then Jack's memories of two years were erased and he left. He went into  independent self deployment, doing scams using his knowledge of future events. After that he build an alien hunting institute in Cardiff, Wales. When John and Jack see eachother again after years, you don't know whether they will they kiss or fight. They do both. Did I tell you that along this story Jack became an inmortal who can't stay dead? No matter how or how often he dies or is killed, he keeps coming back to life. This is all very scraping on the surface, but oh boy, would it be at least a novella to describe them.
They worked together in the Time Agency where they did horrible things to the extent where Jack had two years of his memory stolen so that he couldn’t know what he’d done. They were also in a time loop together for five years where they canonically thought of each other as the wife (John was a good wife :3), and were basically married. Then they had a divorce arc and they both separately went rogue from the Agency to become conmen, although they still worked together/clashed on occasions, always still with that spark of passion. “Frenemies with benefits” Jack called them once, although John preferred “my lover, my rival, my nemesis and destiny. And bane of my bloody life.” Canon finds us where Jack has tried to reform and be a better person, but John is still chasing cons, and all he wants to do is bring Jack back to the stars with him, back to the crime and the glitter of the galaxies (it doesn’t work and he shoves Jack off a building but Jack got himself immortal so he’s fine <3) anyway I am very normal about them xoxo
In John's introduction to the series he shows up on a roof where some guy is mugging someone, grabs him by the throat and dangles him over the edge of the building while this guy begs for his life before dropping him just because he felt like it. When John and Jack interact for the first time in the show there's a super cool guitar riff, very evil western vibes, they walk up to each other, look deeply into each other's eyes, make out, then start throwing punches to Blur's Song 2. In one of the audio dramas we're told about various times where these two conned people, stole a bunch of money and gold and gems and stuff, then had sex with whoever it is they conned before (sometimes) killing them. When Jack devided he was done and left John to die John escaped and married the queen of England (Victoria) then locked Jack up somewhere to take his life force and live forever, destroying the timeline in the process. John has tried to kill all of Jack's friends at least twice to have him all to himself. He found Jack's long lost brother and when the brother turned out to be a terrible person with a vendetta against Jack John did everything he could to save Jack. Their relationship is canon but very one-sided most of the time
just this video
For the Doctor and the Master:
Immortal genderfluid war criminals <333
So we all know the Master has killed plenty of people, but, despite their reputation, the Doctor has killed a more than average number too. Sure they undid the whole destroying their own planet thing, but that's still something the Doctor did. Also there's apparently a novelization out there where, when they were children, the Doctor killed one of their childhood bullies but then made a deal with Death so that the Master had the memory of it and became Death's champion, which is pretty messed up and murder husbandish. There are plenty more war crimes on the Doctor's hands, and the Master has killed countless people in a variety of creative ways. Also, I'm having trouble finding the quote, but I swear the Master once said something to the lines of "trying to kill the Doctor is just my flirting" or something similar. But I do know Missy (also the Master but female at the time) described their relationship as "older than your civilization and infinitely more complex". They love each other, they're constantly trying to destroy each other, they are the only friends they each have who can even begin to understand everything they've been through; they've known each other since childhood and they've watched (and helped) civilizations rise and fall together. They may not be who you first think of for murder spouses but they really are a beautiful example.

I'm sorry but Disney get your facts right. I've seen several places where Disney is calming that the Rouge/Doctor kiss was the first gay moment is Doctor who/ with the Doctor. Excuse me?
First off have we forgot my beloved Captain Jack Harkness? He kissed the Doctor on the mouth and flirted a lot with him before that, then proceeded to flirt with everyone else and I do mean everyone. For crying out loud we met this man when he called rose's bottom excellent then turned around and told the man behind him he had an exsilent bottom as well. Not to mention Torchwood and the whole Ianto thing and the John Hart thing but lets ignore that for the sake of this since it's a different show even though it's the same universe.
Not to mention Jenny and Madame Vastra the Victorian lady and her lizard woman from the dawn of time Wife. Technically Sapphic but Disney is acting like they invented the queerness is Doctor Who so I feel the need to point it out
Master/Missy thing with the Doctor was also definitely fruity but they never kissed so I'll conceded it doesn't really count.
Don't get me started on Clara and Jane Austen I believe it was, I vaguely remember a few Clara being queer of some flavor moment but it's been a while since I watched her seasons so forgive me.
Bill was a lesbian canonically and even had a girlfriend for a bit.
I'm sure I forgetting loads of moments and things but like i said it's been a while since I've done a full watch through so it's not as fresh.
But basically Disney you did not invent the gayness in Doctor Who it has been there forever, do better. Representation is great but you don't get to take credit for something you did not create.
Edit: I have been informed that I was wrong on a couple of things. Thank you for correcting me and I will have to do a re-watch. Rose was not the first trans character. Cassandra used to be a little boy and missy and twelve kissed. Again thank you for correcting me in the comments and please continue to do so if I got anything wrong or forgot something.

Mr. Aldean.
First, you grew up in MACON. Which as memory serves me well, is far from being a "small town."
Now, John Cougar Mellencamp wrote songs about living in a small town. And he did it WITHOUT invoking the image of Sundown towns or shooting a video at the site of a lynching.
Whether you like it or not, flag burning is protected speech under the same First Amendment you claim to hold dear. Which is why I have no problem using the confederate flag as kindling.
You have an opportunity to educate yourself rather than this lame ass fauxpology and please, don't think of using Kane Brown, Darius Rucker or any Black country artist as your convenient "see I'm not a racist" card.
Oh, and Journey sang about a small town and it's a very popular song. So have Creedence Clearwater Revival.
Cry in your beer.
What cracks me up is people think it's just small town folks who look out for each other.
This small-town-values shtick needs a reality check. Yes, folks in such places help each other (as folks do everywhere) but small-town people can be exceptionally cold, judgmental, and downright pernicious. There is no inherent wisdom or righteousness found in a one-horse hamlet.
There are neighborhoods in big cities where this happens. Especially when there are a lot of older Black and Brown folks who live there.
But I don't expect Mr. Aldean to know that.
Mr. Aldean,
You know who's video was also pulled from CMT?
Garth Brooks - "The Thunder Rolls."
Why?
Because his song was about domestic violence and the wife finally pushed to the breaking point.
Not to compare you to Garth Brooks, whom as far as I remember has NEVER dressed in blackface at a Halloween party (see picture below in case you forgot).
Frankly, I'd much rather listen to Garth Brooks than your crappy ode to the 1950's courtesy of Foxed News.
John Denver wrote a song about, of all places, West Virginia, and it didn’t involve him and his boys beating up someone for having different political viewpoints.
Like hello!!!???
"Nutbush City Limits" by the Queen of Rock and roll, Tina Turner!
"Still they Ride" by Journey.
"Lodi" by CCR.
Heck even a group called Chapel Hart.
They sing songs about their small town and imagine that, they do it without invoking the image of Sundown towns, intolerance and shooting their videos at the site of a lynching.
Who knew?
Remember what happened to "The Chicks?"
Also, they dropped the "Dixie" part because they understood history as well as knowing their fanbase isn't lily-white.
Lady A did the same thing.
Some people evolve and do better.
Then there's Jason Aldean.
He knows better he chooses not to do better
So Mr. Aldean,
CMT pulling your crappy video isn't "cancel culture."
It's CONSEQUENCE CULTURE, also known as FAFO - something you're not rightly used to.
It’s the big city culture
Now, about to listen to Southern Fried True Crime and hear about all the stuff y'all get up to in them small towns 😉.

Who shall win Jack Harkness's hand?
Tumblr media
Alrighty, while the final of the John Variants bracket is running, I want to have some fun (read: be chaotic and a Torchwood nerd on main), so we are going to run what is basically a prototype of how the Love Interest bracket would work if you all select it for our next proper bracket.
Except in this case, Jack Harkness has a lot of canon love interests. Like a Lot. So I put together this list of people Jack has had romantic interactions with, and we the people shall decide who is the most worthy of his hand. (Honestly, Jack is big polyamory vibes and this could be a very complex polycule but that's not the point, the point is I'm choosing VIOLENCE)
If you don't know Jack, or you don't know his love interests very well, that's okay. I still want you to vote and participate, so I will be including a brief description of Jack's canon relationship with each potential partner on the polls as well as a picture (if a character is from an audio only medium with no canon pictures, I will use the cover of their audio). This is 100% for fun, and we'll get back to proper John polls next week.
The match-ups are below the cut as well! I'm basically going to just post the polls as soon as I make them today, so that we can get this whole thing over before the final finishes, each round will only last a day including this one's final, and I'll run both sides of the bracket at once. Sorry not sorry about the incoming poll spam <3

Next month is the annual exhibitor showcase Cinemacon where movie studios tout their wares for the very anxious theater owners.
Tumblr media
It has already been announced that Sony is sitting this year out, so no info on VENOM 3: THE LAST DANCE, to be released October 25, 2024.
Tumblr media
While I assume there will be some changes to the lineup, so far it is shaping up to be:
OPENING DAY: International Day features a screening of Universal 80s series remake THE FALL GUY starring Ryan Gosling, Emily Blunt, Hannah Waddingham and Aaron Taylor-Johnson (who has said in a recent interview that it is a small role) ; directed by David Leitch (BULLET TRAIN, DEADPOOL 2)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
DAY ONE: WB pulls up with their presentation "The Big Picture". It will be the first Cinemacon for James Gunn in his position as Co-Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of DC Studios.
I expect a song and dance from Gunn about how awesome sauce the new DC film universe will be
I'll believe it when I see it.
Sure to tease SUPERMAN LEGACY which stars David Corenswet as the title character, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.
Tumblr media
JOKER: FOLIE A DEUX, BEETLEJUICE, BEETLEJUCE
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
MORE STUDIO OFFERINGS
Also, FURIOSA: A MAD MAX SAGA
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
, the supernatural horror film THE WATCHERS, directed and written by Ishana Night Shyamalan, daughter of M. Night
Tumblr media
, M. Night Shymalan's TRAP starring Josh Hartnett, ALTO KNIGHTS with Robert DeNiro playing a dual role.
Certainly don't expect anything to hear about THE BATMAN sequel other than it won't shoot until 2025. There has been no reason provided, but some say there isn't even a script, others say it was because there were no soundstages available in London to shoot this year.
DAY TWO: ANGEL STUDIOS - The outfit behind SOUND OF FREEDOM.
I suspect they will tease SIGHT starring Greg Kinnear and BONHOEFFER (aka GOD'S SPY) about German theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer, starring August Diehl, Flula Borg and Clarke Peters.
LIONSGATE: I suspect they will tease Guy Ritchie's THE MINISTRY OF UNGENTLEMANLY WARFARE starring a pick-a-mix of men for all tastes - Henry Cavill, Alan Ritchson, Alex Pettyfer, Henry Golding and Hero Fiennes Tiffins
Tumblr media
; the action-thriller BOY KILLS WORLD fronted by Bill Skarsgård and costarring Sharlto Copley, Andrew Koji (who is working like mad), Famke Janssen and Isaiah Mustafa.
Tumblr media
Surely, another Bill Skarsgård film THE CROW with fka Twigs
Tumblr media
; THE STRANGERS: CHAPTER 1, which is the third film in the franchise - doing a bit of FAST AND THE FURIOUS mathing. It stars Madelaine Petsch, Froy Guittierez and Gabriel Basso
At long last the BALLERINA has pliete into the spotlight. This JOHN WICK spinoff stars Ana De Armas, with Anjelica Huston reprising her role from JOHN WICK 2. It's direct by Len Wiseman who directed the UNDERWORLD films starring his ex-wife Kate Beckinsale.
BORDERLANDS, an action-comedy based on the game, brought to the screen by Eli Roth. Starring Kevin Hart, Jamie Lee Curtis, Jack Black, Cate Blanchett, Haley Bennett and Édgar Ramírez, amongst others.
Tumblr media
and WHITE BIRD, which is in the same universe as the excellent children geared film WONDER. It was due to come out in 2023 but was pushed back due to the actors strike.
Tumblr media
UNIVERSAL / FOCUS FEATURES: I suspect teases for Dev Patel's directorial debut MONKEY MAN. The film was originally slated to go to Netflix but Jordan Peele, under his Monkey Paw shingle, bought it and took it to Universal so it could have a theatrical release. *Granted, Netflix does a theatrical release for most of their films in certain markets, but I get Peele's rationale.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Their Monsters Universe theatrical idea didn't work, but Universal has realized there is more than one way to skin a cat. They are creating a Universal Monsters themed area at their parks and their monster/horror film ABIGAIL is a re-imaging of DRACULA'S DAUGHTER. It stars Alisha Weir, Melissa Barrera and Dan Stevens and features Angus Cloud in one of his last roles.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
THE FALL GUY most definitely will have a place. Same with THE BIKERIDERS (with Austin Butler, Tom Hardy, Jodie Comer, Norman Reedus, Mike Faist, etc.), which was a 20th Century (Disney owned) Film, and even though it was the first major film out the gate ahead of Oscars/Golden Globes' FYC season with a screening and Q&A held in L.A., the studio purposely stalled the engine and towed it off their schedule. It will now be distributed by Focus Features in the U.S., and Universal, internationally.
Tumblr media
Other possible teases? DESPICABLE ME 4, TWISTERS, the standalone sequel to the 90s film TWISTERS
Tumblr media Tumblr media
, horror film SPEAK NO EVIL starring James McAvoy and Mackenzie Davis
Tumblr media
, WICKED: PART ONE and Sir Ridley Scott's GLADIATOR 2 with Paul Mescal and Pedro Pascal.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There will also be a surprise screening; studio unknown.
DAY THREE: PARAMOUNT: Expected: the mixed live-action and animated comedy IF starring Ryan Reynolds, written/directed and produced by John Krasinski.
Tumblr media
A QUIET PLACE: DAY ONE, GLADIATOR 2 (though this is a co-production with Universal, so maybe Uni will tout it), SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 3, the unending production that is MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 8,
WALT DISNEY: Possible: THE FIRST OMEN, KINGDOM OF THE PLANET OF THE APES
Tumblr media
, MOANA 2, INSIDE OUT 2, DEADPOOL 3, ALIEN: ROMULUS, CAPTAIN AMERICA: BRAVE NEW WORLD and SNOW WHITE.
CinemaCon always closes out with their awards (which always ties into an upcoming release. Funny how that works.
So far the honourees are:
Star of the Year - Lupita Nyong'o (A QUIET PLACE: DAY ONE)
Breakthrough Performer of the Year - Joseph Quinn (A QUIET PLACE: DAY ONE)
Tumblr media
CinemaCon Vanguard Award - Amy Poehler (INSIDE OUT 2)
Director of the Year - Shawn Levy (DEADPOOL AND WOLVERINE)

Captain John Hart (Torchwood) "John channels its fears of "pure, unpredictable, unmotivated violence" by doing things like grabbing a random guy who's mugging another person by the throat, dangling him over a three+ story carpark, and then dropping him to his death. He is impulsive violence personified (pushed the love of his life off of a second roof in the same night just because the guy was snarky at him), but also exercises extreme control over the levels of his violence, like nonfatally wounding people he still needs around and strategic use of venomous lip gloss.
Just like the Slaughter is heralded by music, John has a slick theme song with slinky saloon shootemup guitar riffs, which plays when he shows up which is impressive for a side character who was only in 5% of the show but stole every scene. It's also got the vibes of music to have fun slaughtering to. (John's theme linked here)"
Oh Il-Nam/Player 001 (Squid Game) "He has run 33 sets of death matches in which he makes poor people kill each other for the chance to win enough money to escape their financial burdens and for the entertainment of the wealthy elite helping sponsor it. He has a cynical and nihilistic outlook on life, and so engineers people into a situation where they will kill for financial gain (and to ensure their own survival) to prove it. No one knows they're being put into a life-or-death situation when they first sign up, and they don't realise until the guns start in Red Light Green Light-- by which point they're locked in with their choices being succeed or die. He joins the 33rd game in order to feel some excitement before he dies, and one of the first images of him that went viral was of him beaming ear-to-ear and having an absolute whale of a time during Red Light Green Light while people were terrified and screaming and being gunned down around him. He doesn't blink once about the fact that the bloodshed and corpses around him are his design. He places a game which encourages teamwork (tug of war) right before a competitive pairs game (marbles) so that people decide to team up for the latter with people they trust and then are forced to either stab each other in the back (Sang-woo and Ali) or watch a loved one die and know they bear partial blame (the husband and wife pair). He calls to stop the nighttime riot, yes, but a very common interpretation of that is that it was consciously engineered to cull the participants and create a more hostile environment between players/encourage random attacks, and that that was simply the stop signal and not him actually being afraid or displeased. He even offers to allow Gi-hun to kill him if he loses a bet, subtly luring him towards murder and the Slaughter-- and arguably he was luring people to his patron the whole series since the players could vote to end the games at any time, but chose to stay and kill each other for the chance of the prize money. Even his recruitment method is violent (although not lethal): the Salesman is happy to take permission to slap players across the face in lieu of money when he wins the ddakji bet. Yes, Oh Il-Nam has reasons for creating the game, so arguably to his OWN thinking he isn't peddling "random" or "unmotivated" violence, but generals also have their reasons and plans and that doesn't stop the Piper's presence on the battlefield itself. The fear he creates in his victims is that they will die violently and unpredictably. The initial terror in Red Light Green Light is peak Slaughter, and the non-stop dread and anxiety is it perpetuating. From the wiki: "It is the fear of not knowing where, how, or when pain will come but that it will,"-- per the rules, the players are not allowed to know what the next game is (one player gets executed for taking foreknowledge as part of a deal), so no one knows what the next death trap is… but they know there is going to be another and another until there is no one else left."

Who is more likely to do the deed with their doppelganger?
Jaskier:
Literally said he would fuck his clone. Like it's canon I'm not making this up
I’m pretty sure the actor has said that he would so.
He would definitely fuck his clon
His own words in Blood Origin were “I’m not, not into it”.
John Hart:
Of course, he would. He fucks everything, humans, aliens, any species. He is omnisexual and more than omnisexual. He is a ma wife and a manwhore. He once saw a poodle he thought of being gorgeous. Of course poodles can be gorgeous, but coming from his mouth it really sounds like he means it in a sexual way. He is a selfish, hedonistic sociopath. He would. Definitely. As soon as he had figured out, how.
But, he is a great wife!
Here have a canon quote:
"You mean, there’s a bit of all of you inside of me? Sweet goddesses, that’s all I need."
Here have an incorrect quote that is completely incharacter and canonically believable: of course I would fuck my clone. Who would know better how to fuck me than me?
I have the feeling the clone might not live long after that, or he helds him as a little pet (which wouldn't be possible if his personality is also exactly the same). Now, I think he would totally want to fuck his clone, if they have the same personality as well... Then oh boy... That would be intense. I'm not sure if they would manage to start at all 😂 that would definitely be a fight sex or they totally would surprise everyone with... whatever.

Not Enough of a Good Thing
https://archiveofourown.org/works/53695117 by USS_Genderprise Later, when John would tell of this loop, he’d describe it as “Like having a wife.” And in his mind, he would add, “A wife you desperately want to divorce, but can’t. Probably for tax reasons.” Still, it's not like he wanted it to end. Febuwhump day 11: time loop. What are some of your favourite movies?
Thank you for the ask! (Don't take the numbers too seriously)
Midnight Cowboy (1969), dir. John Schlesinger - Joe Buck the Texan dishwasher goes to New York to hustle women but falls for the little scammer Rico Rizzo who offers him a place to stay when he in record-speed becomes homeless.
A New Leaf (1971), dir. Elaine May - Henry Graham, a rich man who has been living a very unsustainable lifestyle, is now broke. He wants to find a wife, kill her and then inheret her wealth. He ends up with Henrietta, a rich, family-less, botanist who is also a big clutz. ROMANCE.
Gilda (1946), dir. Charles Vidor - Johnny Farrell (bad bi rep) goes to Argentina and gets rescued from being mugged by the casino owner and tungston cartel boss Ballin Mundson, and starts working for him. One day Ballin has found himself an American wife, Gilda. Surprise, surprise. She's Johnny's ex. Drama. Amazing. Women's rights, as Johnny and Ballin are peak misogynistic.
The Roaring Twenties (1939), dir. Raoul Walsh - Eddie Bartlett returns home from the war and its rough being a veteran. He ends up working for the mob and then teams up with George Hally (who is >:)) and they go right to the top. There's like a love-gemoetrical shape. Jean Sherman, a performer, likes Lloyd Hart (friend of Eddie who works for him) but Eddie wants Jean. The singer Panama Smith yearns for Eddie. George and Eddie are married and divorced at the same time. Amazing. Love it.
Deadhead Miles (1972), dir. Vernon Zimmerman - Alan Arkin and Paul Benedict drive a truck. That's it. The music is great. The dialogue is interesting.
Harvey (1950), dir. Henry Koster - Elwood P. Dowd, a pleasant man living with his sister, has an invisible rabbit friend. People think he is mentally unwell, and his sister wants him put away. Pleasantness prevails! Long live kindness!
3:10 to Yuma (1957), dir. Delmer Daves - Dan Evans must regain his fatherly masculinity, he thinks, after his sons see him willingly hand their horses over to Ben Wade and his gang of outlaws etc etc. Because there's a drought, the Evans family also needs cash (for their little ranch), and so Dan agrees to help get Ben to prison in Yuma, aka. on the 3:10 train to Yuma. In Contention City, Dan and Ben are in the bridal suite, and Ben being a slut temptress tries to bribe Dan with cash into letting him go while >:) on the bridal bed. Amazing. Iconic.
The Wicker Man (1973), dir. Robin Hardy - Police sergeant Neil Howie goes to Summerisle to find the missing girl Rowan. Everybody there are unchristian sluts to Howie's horror. Unbeknownst to him, he is a fool. Very good.
Real Life (1979), dir. Albert Brooks - A fictional version of Albert Brooks wants to make a movie about real life! He gets himself a family and some scientists to study this thing. The problem is that Brooks is not completely stable and well... what is 'real life' on camera. Amazing! Love it!
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978), dir. Philip Kaufman - Aliens are taking over and look just like us. Donald Sutherland and Brooke Adams are so <333333. If you've not seen it, it's kind of fun having seen the 1958 version first (the book isn't all that) so you get the little thing about the man running around all :'0. And, it's a good movie. Both are good.
I have many more. These are the ones I remember now :))) Thank you again :)))

Ranking the books I read in 2022 by how much I liked them
20. The Power - Naomi Alderman
I really really hated this book. I think somewhere else I already talked about how much I hated it. The truth is that the concept is good. And I do agree that if women gained power over men that they would create power structures similar to what women currently experience under men. But the absence of any sort of queer/trans exploration seemed really glaring--especially from the author who gave us Disobedience. I felt it just wasn’t nuanced enough for me.
19. Yerba Buena - Nina Lacour
Okay I really liked this book! I think there needs to be more coming of age books about lesbians in their 20’s-30’s and that's exactly what this book was. It was a bittersweet book about two women finding each other and themselves, but I didn’t quite latch onto it.
18. The Oleander Sword - Tasha Suri
I don’t have anything to say except I really liked the second installment in this series and I can’t wait for the next one! More enemies to lovers where they are still kinda enemies.
17. The Echo Wife - Sarah Gailey
I liked the idea of this and almost all of the execution. It’s what would happen if a woman found out how to make clones that had the same personality as their source. Then her husband makes a clone of her. As you can imagine, it’s more about trauma and domestic abuse than cloning. Which works.
16. The Glass Hotel - Emily St. John Mandel
I love the Emily St. John Mandel Connected Universe. Even though I didn’t find these characters as compelling as some of her other works, one thing really stuck with me. In this book she speaks of the wealthy as living in their own country. Because they are so rich, wherever they go they are having similar experiences with similar people. They have more in common with rich people from other countries than poor people from their own. When characters lose wealth they are demoted to the country of the poor.
15. Exciting Times - Naoise Dolan
Some people don’t like this book but I was having a good time. Sadly it’s hard not to make the Sally Rooney comparisons since it’s about a really self aware Irish woman noticing a lot about capitalism. But tbh I eat that shit up. Like Conversations with Friends, she is choosing between the idealized perfect woman love interest and the male love interest who will probably never love her. I don’t think it’s a hard decision but these women seem to really have a problem choosing.
14. We do What We do in the Dark - Michelle Hart
This was another coming of age book about a female college student having an affair with a married female professor. I felt bad for her but also I’m sorry it is kinda sexy. That is absolutely not the point of the book though.
13. The Vegetarian - Han Kang
One woman decides to be vegetarian and you will not BELIEVE the chaos this causes. I really liked the writing style.
12. Disobedience - Naomi Alderman
Unlike The Power, I loved this book. As a Jewish (but not close to how Jewish these characters are) queer woman, I loved this book about Jewish queer women. It was incredibly nuanced, and I was interested in how it explored religion and community and did not give a simple answer. Literally nothing will ever hit harder than women who are foils to one another. One woman is more open about her sexuality and has moved away from her stifling community but she isn’t happy either due to the crushing loneliness of modern capitalism, but the other woman while having community is not being honest about her sexuality and is dealing with oppressive sexism. But now where was the spitting scene from the movie?
11. Sea of Tranquility - Emily St John Mandel
I love time travel. I love meta media. This book was awesome. ESJM writes about her own experiences as the author of a famous pandemic book living during an actual pandemic, but also it takes place far in the future and there is time travel. Five stars.
10. They Never Learn - Layne Fargo
Is this book as much of a literary achievement as some of the books I’ve ranked lower on this list? Absolutely not. But it does have a queer woman murdering rapists and getting a happy ending. Incredibly cathartic 10/10.
9. Fire & Blood - GRRM
I’m sorry this should not be ranked so high. Especially since I learned GRRM was pressured by HBO to work on this instead of winds of winter in time for HOTD to come out. But honestly I really liked it. I am a real sucker for seeing large family history and lineage and that’s exactly what this is. Also I love a good unreliable narrator! It adds this other layer to reading, where you can see the biases and societal norms influencing the writing. I find the sense of ambiguity quite powerful where you know multiple answers could be true, but also when the narrator is so unreliable you can imagine quite literally anything. I choose to imagine Visenya and Sharra of the Vale were lovers, Alys and Tyanna were lovers (and something really complicated went down), and that Rhaenyra and Alicent had a toxic age gap relationship. No one can stop me!
8. Our Wives Under the Sea- Julia Armfield
This was a really creepy book about a woman whose wife goes to sea to research something and comes back changed. It reminds me of that part from The Doll House by CMM where she speaks about how the idea of possession is comforting because it implies it is not the person you love who has changed and is hurting you, but something else inhabiting their body. I love a book that uses sci-fi concepts to explore relationships.
7. Nona the Ninth - Tamsyn Muir
I truly think this is the book that closest captures what it is like to be a child. I love Nona with all my heart. Can’t wait to see what happens to these crazy kids in Alecto.
6. Everyone in this room will someday be dead - Emily R Austin
This book is funny and captures what it feels like to have anxiety in a scarily accurate way. It made me feel a lot of things.
5. The Rehearsal - Eleanor Catton
There is something so fascinating about media that explores the toxic relationship between competitive young artists (musicians and actors especially) and their mentors. The other book that comes to mind is Trust Exercise. Like that book, The Rehearsal has unreliable narrators and a peculiar structure. It is a little more raw and experimental; you can tell this is Catton’s first work. Yet I found it so powerful and thought provoking.
4. Klara and the sun - Kazuo Ishiguro
I read this in a day but I can’t stop thinking about it. Just one of those books about AI and personhood and what if we could create a realistic person from AI? What about personality replication? But what was most interesting to me was how Klara created a religion out of what gave her life -- the sun. Also every time I see the M3gan trailer I think of this book.
3. Detransition, Baby - Torrey Peters
What an interesting book about gender, family, queerness, motherhood, etc…
2. Conjure Women - Afia Atakora
Another book I will think about for the rest of my life. It explores the life of three women (two black one white) living in the South before and after slavery is abolished. It explores a sort of intersectionality and is nuanced but not forgiving of the white woman. It also has a really interesting magical realism aspect which can be read as literal or metaphorical.
1. No one belongs here more than you - Miranda July
A short story collection that is incredibly weird yet so powerful. I am most drawn to authors who let their characters be as strange as humans are. Characters who have not-often-expressed thoughts are sometimes the most relatable because I personally am not going around narrating my life like a cliche standard romance novel and I don’t think most people are! I think most people are out here thinking the weirdest least-logical thoughts out there. And that’s great! I think what ties the stories in this collection together is that the narrators of each story are suffering from either extreme loneliness or trauma, and this leads them to act from a sort of logic that a “normal” person might not understand. But the reader can understand it. You can feel their loneliness radiating from the page and see it dictating their actions, and suddenly it makes sense. As we live through a pandemic, I truly relate to the extreme lengths these characters go through just to feel any sort of human connection.

Gay wrongs tournament, round one of the losers bracket
For Dina and Ellie:
They do justified murders, but murders none the less. Is it really that bad to kill a few dozen people with your gf if your trying to get revenge in this big horrible world?
Spoilers, but Ellie decided to go on a big old revenge murder spree and Dina was a super supportive girlfriend and went right along with her. The two of them killed A Lot of people together. Admittedly Dina eventually tapped out on the whole revenge murder thing eventually, but I feel like they definitely need to be in this tournament.

Because both RLM and James and Maso did videos this week about RoboCop 2 (because someone is doing a new show about him or something? I don't care), I realized I had never actually seen any of the sequels. But they're free on Tubi (and perhaps elsewhere), so I watched RoboCop 2.
I had always heard all the sequels were crap. And compared to the first one, which is decidedly too good for what it is, I can see why people say that. But I thought RoboCop 2 was pretty good.
Tumblr media
It is certainly a retread of the first one, made with less love and nuance and attention to detail than the first one, by people who were literally just doing it because they were hired last-minute to do it. But it has a lot of good stuff in it, and its problems are minor.
I like the weird Dragnet-esque score. I like Willard Pugh as the over-confident, frantic buffoon mayor, who takes what is a kind of pointless subplot and makes it compelling. I like John Doolittle's Dr. Schenk, who it at 11 and about to pop the entire movie. I like the wacky comedy RoboCop 2 attempts who scream and then commit suicide. I like how the one they actually go with is a drug-fueled Metal Gear that acts like a poorly-trained attack dog and has a Lawnmower Man TV face for no good reason.
Tumblr media
I like how his internal heads-up display is a MacOS UI, as compared to RoboCop's green phosphorus RoboDOS (because this certainly was 1990). Oh and the Phil Tippett stop-motion work is the best that ever got here, which is great. I almost forgot I was watching dolls fight in front of a green screen. Masterfully produced. The puppet they use for RoboCop after he is ripped apart is really good, too.
The attempts at satirical advertisements like in the first one are weak, and they probably shouldn't have bothered. OCP is so cartoonishly evil in this one (complete with a Nazi-esqe flag) that it beggars belief that no one really seems to care, especially after their incompetence gets like 40 cops massacred, in front of tons of TV cameras. Nancy Allen and Felton Perry, who were so good in the first one, are basically given nothing to do here. Even RoboCop himself seems to disappear for a third of the movie to make way for some "crime does not pay" child drug lord parable that is too goofy to mean anything. They also set up a character arc for Murphy where he is wresting with who he is by way of his lingering attachment to his ex-wife, but then that just...stops.
Instead, there is a sequence where OCP turns him into WOKEboCop, where they program him to talk to kids about good nutrition instead of gunning down poor people by the hundreds! And the kids make fun of him! Take THAT, Gary Hart!
...Yeah, I'm not giving that any more thought than the people who put it in the movie didn't in 1990. It makes no sense as a metaphor for anything in this plot as it is, and is literally just a thing that happens to RoboCop that he fixes by electrocuting himself. The only message this movie seems to have is maybe "hey, evil corporations and corrupt governments and drug gangs are all the same, man," and slow down with that mind-blowing revelation, 17 year old smoking pot for the first time!
Plus what is the proposed solution to this? Letting a cyborg police man shoot absolutely everyone? RoboCop is more the victim here than the hero. That's sort of the point.
I still liked it. It is more Peter Weller as RoboCop doing RoboCop stuff, and that's what it set out to be. Solid B.
Not sure I am looking forward to the next one, where it isn't Peter Weller and it apparently turns into a kids' movie where RoboCop gets a rocket pack accessory. Weird that RoboCop 2, where a child drug lord dies under a mountain of cash while holding RoboCop's hand, is the sequel that showed restraint.
Tumblr media
(Edit: I watched the two linked videos after I wrote this. Of course we all have similar observations so it looks like I just stole talking points from videos that came out last week. I thought for sure I'd be the only one to mention the MacOS thing...dammit, Colin.
On the plus side I am exactly as observant as YouTube talking heads of a similar age and cultural background. WHAT ARE THE CHANCES?!)

Movie Reviews: Marlowe / Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania
This week I got to review not one but two new releases...both very different.
Marlowe
Raymond Chandler’s character Philip Marlowe was a private eye in his short stories and books in the 1930s on. Pretty soon Hollywood was adapting Marlowe stories into radio, television and films in the 1940s onward. Some of the Marlowe films I watched in my college History of Film class included Murder, My Sweet and The Big Sleep. Now Neil Jordan has adapted a 2014 Marlowe story written by John Banville into the new crime thriller Marlowe opening in theaters this week after some 2022 film festivals.

In 1940s Los Angeles, hardboiled private eye Marlowe (played by Liam Neeson in his 100th performance according to much press) is hired by a rich heiress Clare (Diane Kruger) to find her ex. The movie star mother (played by Jessica Lange) soon gets entangled. That’s about all I can say without getting into spoilers.

Director Neil Jordan has made some great movies in the past. I actually worked for a short time in the Construction Department on his 2007 movie The Brave One. That movie wasn’t perfect by any means, but it had its moments. But his films The Crying Game (he received Oscar nominations for directing and for writing), Interview with a Vampire, and The Butcher Boy really showed his range as a director in terms of excelling in various genres. This is a terrific cast, and I was excited to see Colm Meaney and Ian Hart, both of whom were in Monument Ave (which I worked on) in small supporting roles. The production design was big and lavish. But the problem is: I wanted to like this more than I did. I think the issue is that since the Marlowe films of the 40s, there’s been so many film noir classics and this story (even with a script from William Monahan, which wrote The Departed) it felt derivative of so many other film noirs. Between the character of Marlowe, Neil Jordan and this cast there was something so much better that could’ve been.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania
Marvel Cinematic Universe is hit or miss. Some elitist have said it’s not cinema (Martin Scorsese) or it’s too bad that they are the only types of movies getting made these days (Quentin Tarantino). But hardcore fans have pushed back on that. I fall somewhere in the middle of the fans and the haters. When the movies are good they are really good. When they are bad, they are a let down. Then you have some that are just somewhere in the middle: a fun ride, but nothing I need to see again or buy on blu-ray. In 2015′s Ant-Man, Paul Rudd’s Scott Lang tries to get back to a normal life after getting out of prison and finds himself getting mixed up with a shrinking technology. The first 10-15 minutes of that felt like it was aspiring to so much more than a MCU movie: a guy trying to move on with his life but society won’t let him since he’s an ex-con. Then it just became another super hero movie. It had some fun parts, but it could’ve been so much more, even with a screenplay co-written by Rudd, Edgar Wright and Adam McKay. In 2016′s Captain America: Civil War, Ant-Man gets recruited by Capt. America and became an Avenger. In 2018′s Ant-Man and the Wasp, it was fun to see the shrinking / growing fights in San Francisco, but again it felt like there was a better movie waiting to get out. Ant-Man re-joined the Avengers in 2019′s Avengers: Endgame. Now the third Lang movie Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania opens this week.

In this one Hope Van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly) and her scientist father Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) now have mother/wife Janet (Michelle Pfieffer) back from the Quantum Realm...even if she is reluctant to talk about this world she was in for 30 years. Lang’s daughter Cassie (now much older and played by Kathryn Newton) is working on a signal to the Quantum Realm, but it thrusts them all into this world, where they get separated. Janet is the most familiar with this world, but even she is fearful of Kang the Conqueror (Jonathan Majors), who makes a deal with Ant-Man...and things go awry.

Rudd, Newton and Lilly in the Quantum Realm
I actually like this better than the first two Ant-Man movies mainly because of Kang the Conqueror, one of the best Marvel villains we’ve had in a while, and the relationship Lang now has with his grown daughter Cassie. The idea of shrinking is nothing new, we’ve seen it in Fantastic Voyage, The Incredible Shrinking Woman, and Innerspace just to name a few, but with this one instead of reminding me of Marvel movies, it reminded me more of classic Star Trek episodes and sci-fi movies of the 50s and 60s. Returning director Peyton Reed has mixed it up with movies like Bring It On and episodes of The Mandalorian, but what first got my attention about him was the behind-the-scenes special on Back to the Future trilogy that aired on TV in 1990 and then he directed the live-action segments on the BTTF animated series. If he never directs anything else, he has my thumbs up for his contribution to the BTTF universe! But what lifts the sail of all the Ant-Man movies is Paul Rudd. He has a charm and a charisma that has served him well in romances and comedies (notably David Wain and Judd Apatow comedies), but here he’s the protective father on a grand scale. Did I mention I really dug the reference to Welcome Back Kotter too?
