High-mountain gold mine. Photographer Vitaliy Rage. Kazakhstan (Alma-Ata).
The road to the mine. Altitude 3750 m. In the distance is the Akshirak massif. You can see the peak of the SNK of Kyrgyzstan, 4956 m. Kumtor (Kyrgyz: Кумтөр) is the third largest gold deposit. Gold deposits are estimated at 700 tons. Kumtor is the last high-mountain mine in the world. The deposit is located in the Issyk-Kul region of Kyrgyzstan, 350 km from Bishkek, 60 km south of Lake Issyk-Kul, 60 km from the border with China. The deposit is mined in an open pit using generally accepted methods of drilling, blasting, loading and transportation. The ore is delivered to a crusher and then to a factory, where the ore is crushed and gold is extracted using the "coal in solution" technology. From 1997 to June 30, 2010, Kumtor produced 7.8 million ounces or 242.5 tons of gold.

The strains of Y. pestis that are closest to the polytomy have been recovered from the Tian Shan mountains and its foothills (see figure 6.7). This region around Lake Issyk Kul, where the autonomous Xinjiang region of China meets Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan, has emerged as a zone of particular interest for the evolutionary history of plague.
