19. The morning sun caresses her skin
I was thinking the morning after Anita quits her job and Jimmy finds her in the kitchen and take her to bed. A new beginning for them ☺️

Ties into ongoing Dean Archer Series: TheStudy
The sunlight cascades through the gap in the curtains, caressing your skin as you sleep with your head on Jimmy’s chest, your body draped over him. His gaze comes to rest on the Illumination clock as his fingers comb lightly through your hair.
9:02am
It’s the first time you’ve slept late in years.
Despite everything that happened yesterday you seem serene, like a weight has been lifted off your shoulders. You’ve been doing this job since you met him and he’s watched you pour your heart and soul into it. He’s never begrudged the late nights, the distracted mindset, your dedication is one of the reasons he fell in love with you. However he despises what this role has done to you, the war it’s waged on your mental health over the years, the fact they refuse to acknowledge what your mentor has done. He thinks getting out of that job could be the best thing that happened to you, he just has to wait for you to realise it.
You stir when his phone chimes, grumbling into the curve of his throat. He reaches for the device as carefully as possible, frowning as he reads the text from Dean Archer.
My wife is looking to take a step back from the study she’s working on. Would Anita be interested?
He knows the one Dean’s talking about. Isobel is working with Jack Dayton to examine the impact of the Medical Examiners Service on families coping with loss. You’d been part of the initial design process, helping to layout the parameters, giving Isobel contact details for people she could reach out to.
“Would you not think about coming aboard?” Isobel had asked you but you’d shaken your head because with your position in social services there was no way you’d have the time.
“It’s frustrating.” You had told him that night over dinner. “This study could do a lot of good. I just wish I could be a part of it.”
Jimmy’s a firm believer that everything happens for a reason.
Afterall if Goodwin hadn’t roped him into doing a little charity work, he wouldn’t have met you.
Yes, he types back. I think she would be.

Noemeber 7th 1861 saw the death in Stromness of Isobel Gunn.
One of my favourite wee stories to come out of Orkney, if not Scotland as a whole,
IIsabel was born in Tankerness on August 1, 1781, the daughter of John Fubbister and Girzal Allan. Because practically nothing is known of her time in Orkney, details of her early life are sketchy, but it's safe to say thy would have been unremarkable.
What is known, however, is that in June 1806, driven by poverty, and possibly by love of a man, she left Orkney bound for the Canadian wilds.
In Rupert’s Land, Canada, long before white women were allowed to travel to the Nor' Wast, she defied the rules of the all-male Hudson's Bay Company and disguised herself as a man to enlist.
Isabel assumed the role of John Fubbister, a man she claimed was from the Orkney parish of St Andrews. She worked diligently in the harsh conditions of the Canadian Nor' Wast for a year and earned herself a pay rise for performing her duties "willingly and well".
Incredibly, throughout her time with the Hudson's Bay Company, Isabel managed to maintain her male disguise and it was not until she became pregnant that her ruse was finally discovered. Isabel worked throughout her pregnancy, even taking part in an 1,800 mile canoe trek from Fort Albany to North Dakota when she was four months pregnant.
In the summer of 1807, Isabel was sent to the Pembina post of the Hudson Bay Company where she was to serve as cook to the master, Donald McKay.
By this time, her swelling stomach was obviously making the disguise harder to keep up. But she managed and it was not until she actually started giving birth that her deception was uncovered.
On the morning of December 29, 1807, Isabel had begged the chief factor of the company, Mr Alexander Henry, to let her remain in his house.
According to Henry’s journal:
“An extraordinary affair occurred this morning. One of the Orkney lads, apparently indisposed, had requested me to allow him to remain in my house for a short time.
Puzzled at the "man's" behaviour, Mr Henry agreed, and left John Fubbister sitting by the fire. His diary takes up the story:
“I was surprised at the fellow’s demand; however, I told him to sit down and warm himself. I returned to my own room where I had not been long before he sent one of my people requesting the favour of speaking with me."I returned to my room, where I had not been long before he sent one of my own people, requesting the favour of speaking with me. Accordingly, I stepped down to him, and was much surprised to find him extended on the hearth, uttering dreadful lamentations; he stretched out his hands towards me, and in piteous tones begged me to be kind to a poor, helpless, abandoned wretch, who was not of the sex I had supposed, but an unfortunate Orkney girl, pregnant and actually in childbirth."
According to Henry, Isabel said that the man who had debauched her two years earlier was wintering in what is now known as Grand Forks, North Dakota.
His journal continued:
“In about an hour she was safely delivered of a fine boy and that same day she was conveyed home in my cariole, where she soon recovered.”
Isabel's child was christened James. The identity of his father is not clear but Isabel does refer to a fellow Orcadian, John Scarth, whom, she claimed, had raped her.
According to HBC records, Scarth had been stationed with Isabel for much of the time she had spent in Rupert’s Land. Even so, Scarth’s discovery that Isabel was a woman appears to have been purely by chance.
An article in the Free Press Evening Bulletin of Winnipeg, by C. N. Bell, in 1922, quoted a veteran settler called Donald Murray, whom the author had interviewed back in 1887.
Donald Murray’s testimony was:
“I remember perfectly the case of the Orkney girl. Of course I was not in this country in 1807 when the affair occurred, but I knew well the man who was connected with it and the story was common talk for many a year.
“The girl came from Orkney to James Bay in the service of the Hudson Bay Company and was dressed in man’s clothes. For years, her sex was not discovered by any of the people who associated with her when she was at the company post at James Bay.
“She was for two years at the Partridge House with a man named Scarth, who used to find her on his return from hunting, sitting by the fire crying; and she did very little work, appearing to be much troubled in mind.
“After that, she and Scarth were sent inland (more than 1,000 miles) to the Brandon House post on the Assiniboine River, where they occupied the same cabin in the fort.
“Scarth was the right-hand man of Mr Goodwin, the master at Brandon House for the Hudson Bay Company, and the latter frequently asked Scarth to his house of an evening to take a dram of grog and consult with him.
“One night, Scarth had been at the master’s house until late at night, and on his return to the cabin discovered the true sex of his partner. He at once told the frightened woman that he would go to Mr Goodwin with the news but she fell on her knees and begged him not to reveal her identity.
“After much persuasion, he consented to keep the secret, and they continued to live together under the same conditions as before, and it was not for a long time afterwards that she lost her honour.”
Whether or not John Scarth was the father of the child, he was certainly registered as such. But it was after the birth of the boy that Isabel began calling herself Gunn. Is it possible that was the name of the father?
Her ruse discovered, Isabel was not permitted to continue working alongside the men, so took up the role of a washerwoman in Fort Albany. But she didn’t stay long.
On September 20, 1809, Isabel Gunn and James sailed for Orkney.
Back home, Isabel apparently found work in Stromness as a seamstress. She remained there, living in poverty with James, until her death in 1861, aged 81.
There is a documentary out there somewhere about Isabel, The Orkney Lad: The Story of Isabel Gunn, directed by filmmaker, Anne Wheeler, and every time her story pops up I search fruitlessly for it, listen to the ballad by Canadian folk singer Eileen McGann with her moving ballad called Isabella Gunn. .

iZombie - ‘Death Moves Pretty Fast’ Review
"I'm untouchable."
After weeks of events that felt more like the start of something rather that the beginning of the end, ‘Death Moves Pretty Fast’ started us on our way towards resolution of five years’ worth of insanity.
Blaine has spent four plus seasons getting away with, amongst other things, murder. After Al discovered the mask used in the Baracus’ assassination video in Blaine’s home last week, she uses every snooping trick in the book to get the details she needs in order to finish her tell-all expose on the glorified drug peddler.
To summarize, she overhears Liv and Ravi rant about Blaine being a "teen murderer"; she gets more than one drunken confession from Don E about all the debauchery he’s been party to; and last but not least, she found out about his past romance with now-mayor Peyton Charles. We haven’t seen much of the fallout Peyton will inevitably face, other than her sad realization of what’s about to happen to her and her career, but we did see Blaine in a rare moment of panic after he found out that his dirty laundry has been made public in the most explosive way.
I love Blaine, and I love how extra his antics have been, but it’s extremely satisfying to see him finally get his just desserts. Now that we’re episodes away from the close of the series, it only makes sense to see the trademark antagonist finally face the consequences of his many, many crimes. He may slink out of this one though, even now. I’m guessing Ravi’s own secret about Isobel’s brain providing the cure also becoming public knowledge will play into Blaine’s escape plan in some way. His ears practically jumped off his skull when he saw the notification flash up on his screen.
It’s sad to watch Ravi come to terms with the horrifying future of innocent kids being pursued in the hopes of using their brains to save the thousands of zombies all desperate for a cure. It was a total inevitability that it would slip into the general public at some point, but Isobel’s mother unknowingly dropping the details in an interview is almost more depressing because there’s nobody to blame for it. All we can hope now is that Ravi will be able to find a more humane way to save the thousands being persecuted in New Seattle. I’m assuming Dr Collier at the CDC will help him in some way. She’s been radio silent since the premiere.
While the events I’ve already talked about were more than sufficient in pushing the season’s larger narrative forward, the case taking place throughout the episode was actually a lot of fun. Whether intentional or not*, the decision to make Liv and Ravi the main crime-solving duo was pretty great. The case itself was predictable, right down to the guilty party, but it folded in nicely with Al’s pursuit of Blaine. Philip Bolden was a great guest star, too.
Plus
*Clive injured himself off-screen before he appeared for the first time (he slipped on Slippery Nipple, LOL), which I'm assuming was a way of keeping Malcolm Goodwin off his feet since he might have gotten injured irl?
CHICS stuck again, and polluted the brain supply with Alzheimer’s brains, which Enzo used to his advantage to pursue his own elitist agenda. Major caught him though, and put him on ice for being a sneak.
CHICS also masterminded a breakout of all of the zombies Fillmore Graves had on ice. What is their endgame?
He Said, She Said
Blaine: "We all know you can't lock me up. Not when I'm the only thing keeping the city's zombies from starving. I'm untouchable."
Ravi: "Blaine lies, cheats, steals, kills and prospers. Meanwhile, I can't even prevent a bunch of dying kids from being hunted like dogs."
I still feel a little in the dark with regards to the goal this season is working towards, but the decision to tie it back to past seasons feels more in line with what I expected from this final run of episodes.
8 out of 10 Alzheimer’s brain tubes.

Denis Shaw as Mike
Chad picked this Hammer gem and he loves the more active mummy as played by Christopher Lee and he appreciates the backstory provided as well. Whitney also approves and calls The Mummy a lot of fun. After all, how can you go wrong with Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee? For Joseph, the Christopher Lee mummy is a more threatening monster than that presented in Universal’s The Mummy (1932) by Boris Karloff. Jeff agrees that Christopher Lee puts his own indelible stamp on the movie’s title character and loves the elaborate sets seen in Hammer films that include Bernard Robinson’s production designs.
At the time of this writing, you can catch The Mummy streaming on various VOD sites. Check it out! You'll be glad you did!

Whistlewood Contemporary , located in Shoreham in the hinterland of the Mornington Peninsula, is housed in the family home of the late art critic, author and founding director of the Mornington Peninsula Regional Arts Gallery, Alan McCulloch OC, and his wife, actress Ella Bromley McCulloch. The 1870’s weatherboard house is layered with iconic Australian art and architectural significance, including Alan McCulloch’s studio he designed and built with Arthur Boyd, and additions by Melbourne architects Charles Smart and David Faggetter.
Whistlewood’s architecture sensitively transitions from the 1870’s to the 2000’s, with rooms that ‘flow into one another, reflecting the evolving styles of the eras.’ Susan and Emily explain that this assemblage of architectural styles enables ‘the display of a wide range of art of different styles and media at any one time.’ The relationship between the home and art space is particularly important to Susan and Emily, who aim to create a welcoming and friendly atmosphere in which people feel, ‘literally, at home with art.’
Whistlewood is primarily focused on showing the work of leading Indigenous Australian artists, and the co-directors describe that ‘visiting and showing the work of today’s leading Aboriginal and other artists from so many different regions is a great privilege.’
Since the late 1970’s Susan has been a leading researcher and writer in Contemporary Indigenous Art, and in the early 1980’s established her own publishing house. The ‘McCulloch’s Contemporary Aboriginal Art: the complete guide’ has been an essential Australian art book since its initial publication in 1999, and is now co-edited by Susan and Emily.
The domestic and the professional realms intertwine continuously at Whistlewood, where ‘Arthur’s Studio’ is now used by Susan, Emily and their assistant, as a quiet space for writing and research.
The range of works on show here include ‘Kimberley ochres, barks from Arnhem Land, brilliant colour canvases from the central, western and eastern deserts, the Pilbara, Far North Queensland, the APY Lands from leading art centres and by award winning and established artists as well as talented newcomers.’ Whistlewood also works with local Aboriginal Arts Centre Baluk Arts , and has a strong focus on arts education through ‘Art Parade’ events.
Susan and Emily’s work, lives and home all coalesce in the hub of Whistlewood. From this gallery and home location, Emily also began a nation-wide initiative in 2012, titled the Indigenous Jewellery Project. This project works with remote community art centres and practitioners towards exhibiting in contemporary craft and design spaces, such as Craft ACT and the Australian Design Centre. In this way, alongside the McCulloch and McCulloch publishing house, Whistlewood Contemporary both expands out into the world, and invites people in to this very special Australian home.
Whistlewood Contemporary 642 Tucks Road Shoreham, Victoria 3916 Open: Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Public Holidays 11am – 4pm
