Monday Morning Motivation - Crying in the Rain
Monday Morning Motivation - Crying in the Rain @nxtri #lovetriathlon #extreme
© Agurtxane-Concellon I liked last week’s motivational video about Isklar Norseman Xtreme Triathlon so much that I went hunting for another one and found this one from 2014 – enjoy! “The tears stream down my cheeks from my unblinking eyes. What makes me weep so? There is nothing saddening here. Perhaps it is liquefied brain.” ―…

It has been 5 years since I’ve done an Ironman Triathlon in Europe. The last Ironman competition I completed in Europe was the Norseman Extreme Triathlon described as ‘hardest triathlon in the world 🌎’ In 2 weeks I’ll attempt to complete 2 Full Ironman Competitions in one week at Ironman Austria 🇦🇹 and Ironman Switzerland 🇨🇭 Description about the Norseman Xtreme Tri is epically hard. On paper, Hardanger region in Norway looks like the worst place imaginable for a triathlon. For starters, the waters of Eidfjord are cold—some years, as low as 50 degrees Fahrenheit. The weather is unpredictable, but usually contains at least one element of cold, wet, or windy conditions—sometimes, all three. It was in fact the hardest single day event I’ve ever done in my life. Scandinavia’s Isklar Norseman Xtreme Triathlon has become widely regarded as the world’s toughest race! 💥 To start the event, you’ll take a ferry for 2.4 miles, then jump off and swim to shore. The 4-meter jump off the boat is one of the most unique race starts in triathlon—only two other races, Escape from Alcatraz and Escape the Cape, utilize a ferry start 💥 The hills are alive with the sound of suffering on the bike 🚴 There isn’t much opportunity to ease into the bike course—once you leave T1, you go up (and up, and up). The first 25 miles climbs more than 3,000 feet, with some grades as steep as 29%. Even after getting to the highest point, the climbing doesn’t stop as the course rolls up and over. Hardangervidda, the largest mountain plateau in Northern Europe. In all, the bike course covers more than 17,000 feet of elevation gain. 💥 And it doesn’t stop Run 🏃 Once athletes exit T2 on the run, the marathon is mercifully flat—until it isn’t. At mile 15, you’ll meet Gaustatoppen, a rocky, relentless 4,600 foot climb to the sky-high finish line. The race doesn’t provide aid stations to athletes. Rather, Norseman was designed to be a shared experience with family and friends. I can’t help but thank my UC Berkeley / Norwegian Olympic Rower, Nito Simonsen, My Father John Nunn, and family friend Peter Rasmussen for all their tremendous help and support during the race @nxtri @nitosim (at Zalaris Norseman Xtreme Triathlon) https://www.instagram.com/p/Ce2j7PMLhEi/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Get to know the First Pinay Norseman Finisher, Laarni Paredes, A Herbalife Athelete
Just this August 05, 2017, Laarni Paredes is the first ever Filipina who conquered Isklar Norseman Xtreme Triathlon the world’s toughest triathlon as quoted by Telegraph.co.uk that happened in an icy region of Norway. And today, we will get to know more about her! Her passion for running, her accomplishments, and what’s next for her.
Laarni Paredes, 38, a member of Herbalife Triathlete Team, housewife, and a mother of a pretty 5 Yrs. old daughter. She ranked #26 in the International Triathlon Union (ITU) World Long Distance Series, Women’s Division in 2008, BRONZE LEVEL, IRONMAN ALL WORLD ATHLETE 2014 and 2015 TRI UNITED SERIES 2015, Age Group Champion, Women’s 35-39, 7-time Iron-distance Finisher (4km swim, 180km bike, 42km run).
We were given a chance to have an exclusive interview with Laarni Paredes at Makati Shang-rila. Here’s what we've learned about during her toughest race:
1. What drove you to join the Norseman? How did your husband Omar influence your decision to join? I learned about Norseman a few years ago from a friend who said it is one of his bucket list races and one of the toughest in the world. Having done 7 full iron distance races in the past and feeling quite confident about finishing such events, I wanted something new, a bigger challenge just to see if I can make it. My husband, of course, is a huge influence on my decision to push through after I got a slot in the lottery. It means a lot to have his support because it means a lot having his blessing to train for the event or allot budget for the trip.
2. What was the most difficult part of the event for you? Why? What was the best advice you’ve heard about this challenge? Definitely the bike part. I spend about 9 hours on it. By far the hardest bike I’ve done, hands down. It’s cliche, but it worked like a charm - just enjoy the journey. It helped to focus more on enjoying every moment of it, treat it as a journey, rather than a race.
3. How did you manage to sustain your pacing during the event? I tried to keep an even pace throughout, especially on the hills where it was critical to conserving energy as much as possible. It helped a lot that my support crew was able to provide adequate nutrition throughout the bike and run parts; and made sure I was kept warm.
4. How did Herbalife help you the whole time you were preparing for the event? How about during the event and after the event? Preparing for the event, there’s the usual morning meal in the form of H24 F1 sport, H24 Rebuild Strength after workouts for recovery. I also take 1 or 2 servings of H24 F1 Sport before a workout for fuel. NRG is also a staple of training and racing for that energy boost. H24 Prolong is also my favorite during races because it helps fuel me as a dual source of carbs and electrolytes.
Herbalife has been my nutrition partner. I have been an Herbalife-sponsored triathlete for eight years now. And really, being with the company, taking the nutrition it provides, helped in creating the result that I wanted. (insert here the actual quote on the products that she takes).
With Herbalife, we always feel that we’re part of a big family. They’ve sent their personal messages, and make sure that accomplishments like this are recognized, and right now, I’m here with you, sharing my Norseman journey, which is a big chapter in my Herbalife Nutrition story.
5. How do you manage your work and family? ‘My family is the important thing in our lives. “Prioritization lang yan” I do have a job as a Digital Content Specialist, it is a home-based job so talagang gumagawa ako ng paraan para ma-guide at maalagaan ang aming daughter. Hawak ko oras ko kaya balance naman ang career at family life ko.’
6. After conquering Norseman, what next for Laarni Paredes? For now, I look forward to a nice, well-deserved off season. Next year, I look forward to racing locally as usual, and who knows, maybe another extreme tri race again in the future if I get lucky. :)

Media Monday When I was featured in the local Manhattan Beach Reporter while preparing for the 2019 Ironman World 🌎 Championships in Kona, Hawaii From the article: The race, set for Oct. 12, will combine three of the toughest endurance races in Hawaii, bringing together more than 2,000 of the world’s best athletes to swim 2.4 miles, bike 112 miles and run 26.2 miles. But, Nunn—son of Olympic bronze medalist sculler John Nunn who was raised in Palos Verdes—isn’t nervous. He said he's been training for this his whole life. “I’m trying to hold it, like control it before race day,” Nunn mused. “It’s been a lifelong dream to go and compete...if you ask anybody that’s doing marathons or triathlons, the ultimate is to go to Kona.” The 6 foot 3 inch tall bronzed adonis, who just turned 40 earlier this summer, has traveled the world, venturing to four continents to compete in 14 Ironman triathlons. He also raced in the Isklar Norseman Xtreme Triathlon in Norway. “I’ve swam with sharks in Australia, jellyfish in Mexico like actually stinging you during the race, big jellyfish in Sweden that come like a wall...dealt with alligators in Florida to crocodiles in Australia swimming in the ocean with you. In Norway, I swam in a fjord that was 40 degrees, 17,000 feet of mountain climbs, ridiculously hard train,” Nunn recollected. “You just think hey if I can do that, I can get through this.” His preparation for all of these extreme endurance races, including his upcoming journey around Kailua-Kona? A sport Nunn credits with allowing him to create his own path in life: rowing. “It’s a whole-body workout so it’s really efficient and low-impact,” Nunn explained, adding he attended his alma mater Cal Berkeley on a full-scholarship for the sport. Nunn owns an indoor rowing gym in Long Beach, Roworx fitness group rowing classes @roworx_rowing Rowing can make you a stronger endurance athlete... period! Come join us everyday at 8:15AM with an outdoor group rowing class with views overlooking the water in marine stadium in Long Beach, Ca and get the best low impact total body workout of your life.
