Kabhi Main Kabhi Tum
This teaser of the new ongoing Pakistani drama has a chokehold on me. The narration, the visuals, the background music.
youtube
Mustafa : I’m beginning to like you
Sharjeena : Now?
Mustafa : You may become a habit
Sharjeena: Why?
Mustafa : I will fall in love
Sharjeena : So?
Mustafa : It will be difficult to live without you , To be with me will become your duty, Everything will be at stake
Sharjeena : ok let’s do that (put everything at stake)
Mustafa : Life too?
I binged off all 21 episodes over Fri - Sat. I love how realistic the relationship arc between the lead pair is. Never been a fan of Hania Aamir , but she has impressed me as Sharjeena. What a strong and balanced female lead. Calm, quiet, not the silent sufferer, but one who stands up for her self respect.
First time watching Fahad Mustafa who is nailing Mustafa’s character. A good for nothing, neglected younger son of the family. Life takes an unexpected turn and in his marriage he finds a girl who believes in him. For the first time someone wants him to do something in his life and has unwavering belief in him. So he decides that he will do it for her.
Sharjeena and Mustafa’s journey begins - from an unexpected marriage to friendship to love. Two broken souls find their soulmates in each other and vow to never leave each other’s side battling their own struggles and insecurities.
The show is written by Farhat Ishtiaq - the writer who gave us one of the most iconic Pakistani dramas ‘Yakeen Ka Safar’ and one of the biggest hit shows ‘Humsafar’ . She rarely disappoints.
I’m totally hooked - I have been looking for a romance story to click for me this year in KDramas and I found it unexpectedly in Pak dramas. It made me ignore the rationale for the unexpected marriage. Thank god it doesn’t have ‘cousins marriage’ . The show is not path breaking , it’s a cliched plot, but the relationship arc and the lead characters are grounded and not toxic. Credit to Hania and Fahad for their endearing chemistry.
Is anyone watching this show?

I've been watching Kankar and DeD for the first time (well, I've watched bits & pieces of DeD with my mom before) UA and FI in their peaks were something else. It's good that FI limits her output because UA has overworked herself into bizarroland. I do think the old UA was a better dialogue and character writer between the two. The way her characters hit you viscerally is something else. While FI is a more effective storyteller and can handle broad, expansive themes better.
i said this in an earlier ask about how UA's writing hits more when one reads her novels. her sweeping descriptions of even the mundane actions get you completely engrossed in and TV can't capture those sentiments quite so well. however, her dialogues remain her strength in both mediums. UA's tv work isn't the same as it was more than a decade ago. back then she was still more interested in exploring the fragile connections between humans without submerging herself in the torrents of propaganda or using her writing to unabashedly insert her personal opinions and politics to make generalized statements. she is best when she keeps it simple.
on the contrary, FI works better on TV as her writing itself has a very screenplay quality to it so that translates well for the screen. an underrated FI drama is Mere Humdum Mere Dost which fully lost its chance to be more popular because Momina had the genius idea of airing it on Urdu1 and not HumTV. honestly it's sad how FI doesn't adapt more of her already written work for TV. the original work is also great but she has some beautiful gems from her digest writing days that can STILL reign supreme on the audiences mind. like..all this hype for JBHSSL which yes is a fine novel but had FI, instead of going for her last digest writing success, gone for her debut work Wo Jo Qarz Rakhte The Jaan Par and chose THAT to be her next big TV screen adaptation - oh bhayeeeeeee jo tabahiyan honi thi!! it has both the complex emotions of a desi child for their estranged family and a love story so damn HEARTBREAKING ke abhi bhi yaad aati hai toh rone ka dil karta hai. but oh well....kya hi keh sakte hain ab?

i think one of the things i want to do over break for funsies is like. rewatch every pak drama of the major contemporary writers nationally hailed as progressive (e.g., umera ahmed, farhat ishtiaq, sameera fazal, etc.) and see how many of the male leads i come out actually still liking. like i want to make an excel spreadsheet cataloguing every red flag that went under my radar as a kid. for science
#bc if we are being real. sooo many of these guys are nothing short of rancid#and while i get the point of a lot of these dramas is to show emotionally stunted men grow#idk how much tolerance i have for certain behaviors now like idk..#tangentially this is also why complaints of saif from kuch ankahi Really amuse me#like ok so all of the most toxic and insecure men imaginable aren’t a problem for most pak drama fans#but a man who simply lacks agency and is maybe a bit cowardly bc his mother overimposes on him is horrible and unappealing..#like i’m not saying people have to like him or have a crush on him by any means#but i think it’s weird people are blatantly ignoring he’s being used to comment on how mothers emasculate their sons and strip their agency#and how that doesn’t always translate to those sons being weird toxic alpha males but can simply make them cowardly and unable to stand up#for themselves. which yes. is totally worth criticizing. but it’s strange people think samiya is coddling him#simply bc she’s willing to ask him what he thinks when his mother does or says certain things#if she were coddling him she wouldn’t even bother worrying that he’s a pushover#but instead what she does is prompt him to slowly recognize that he has his own thoughts and feelings and that he can act on him#and that she’s not going to solve his problems for him bc he’s capable of solving them himself#and idk i think that is a narrative worth telling. and i am so willing to cut him slack for being a coward bc he’s the farthest thing from#a toxic alpha male. people have twisted him into being this horrible liar cheat etc for liking someone else prior to his marriage#despite the fact that we are literally being told and shown he’s forced into the marriage and his mom Knows he likes someone else and she#doesn’t care. saif cannot realistically say no without effectively running away and he’s incapable of that bc he fears his mother#he’s not a bad person. he’s just a coward. and his growth will entail that he becomes someone brave enough to take a stand for himself#and personally i am way more open than whatever shite we have in other dramas where it takes a saas abusing her bahu for her son to wake up#to be deleted
