Apocalypse Bringer Mynoghra: World Conquest Starts with the Civilization of Ruin, Vol. 1
By Fehu Kazuno and Jun. Released in Japan as “Isekai Mokushiroku Mynoghra: Hametsu no Bunmei de Hajimeru Sekai Seifuku” by GC Novels. Released in North America by Cross Infinite World. Translated by Charis Messier.
This was the runner-up in my “what book that I skipped reading should I give a try?” poll, and unlike The World of Otome Games Is Tough for Mobs, I didn’t actually know anything about it in advance; it just did not sound like my thing. Honestly, when it was announced I was surprised. Cross Infinite World is a publisher that has a back catalog that, while not genre-specific, tends to lean more into “I am a girl in a fantasy world and romance is involved”. Licensing not just an isekai but also one from the POV of the “evil” side seemed like a step out of the comfort zone. Still, I think it’s done pretty well for them; it’s getting an audiobook, which shows that it must have some dedicated fans. That said, after reading the first volume, I think I will stick with my original premise: this series isn’t for me.
We open with Takuto Ira dying, as so many of these books do. He’s a rich kid who unfortunately has spent most of his life in a hospital bed, and has finally passed away from the incurable disease that kept him there. Then he wakes up… in what appears to be the game that he played so much in the hospital, Eternal Nations. Together with his most beloved NPC, the sludge girl Atou. Surprisingly, she remembers all the playthroughs she had with him, even though she is also surprised that this is where they are. As both try to figure out what’s going on, they have to deal with a tribe of dark elves on the run, some paladins who are investigating a dark prophecy, Takuto’s own communication disorder, and the possibility that this is not merely “I’m now in the world of my beloved game”. Also, they’re evil.
I said this series is not for me, but if you’re a fan of Overlord, or Her Majesty’s Swarm, then this is absolutely in your ballpark. It does a good job setting up its world, and while there is perhaps a bit more gaming talk than I’d like, it makes sense given that is where Takuto and Atou think they are. The relationship between the two of them is adorable, and also contrasts nicely to their relationship with everyone else in the cast. This all leads up to the climax of this first book, where – I hate to break it to you – there’s a lot of violent slaughter. This is not all that interesting in and of itself – in a book where the main cast is on the evil side, you sort of expect it – but the reaction of Takuto to it is the best part of the book, if only as it’s so disturbing. He’s shown no sign of not being “normal Japanese guy”, he’s talked before about trying to live in peace. So the sudden loss of morality and ethics in his behavior unnerves Atou and the reader at the same time.
For what it is, this is a good book. Not for me. But if you like dark fantasy with an emphasis on the dark, it’s fine.

Welcome to the Black Parade
I gotta stop reading so many Isekais, man. I feel like all i ever recommend is these spirited away, power fantasy boos and I'm starting to feel some kind of way about it. Like, i understand that entertainment in general is a form of escapism or whatever but I'm mildly concerned that the wast majority of the sh*t i enjoy as of late, are all narratives of cats dying and being transported to other worlds. Or, maybe, that kind of story lends it’s elf to my world building fetish? Or, maybe, this is what the industry craps out so the market is saturated? Or, maybe, there aren’t many good books in my other preferred genres like cyberpunk, shonen, or mecha. That said, your boy is back with another dope recommend; Isekai Mokushiroku Mynoghra: Hametsu No Bunmei De Hajimeru Sekai Seifuku!
I hate this trend of ridiculously long titles. Like, f*cking why, right? Anyway, this is the story of Ira Takuto, a very sickly, bedridden boy, who spent his time climbing the ranks of an online game while he was hospitalized. Eventually, he succumbed to his illness and was transported to a world similar to the one he so effortless mastered, Eternal Nations, while he was alive. Upon his arrival, his most trusted vassal and unmitigated eldritch horror with a cute face and penchant for genocide, Atou, greeted him with a smile. You see, Ira was no hero in Eternal Nations. No, he played it on the hard mode, taking up the position of evil aligned. Through his effort, he dominated the game with Atou by his side, becoming the most powerful evil lord in the entire game. This is the form Ira took upon reincarnating in this new world and he sets about shaping it to his whim.
Mynoghra feels a lot like Overlord and we all know how much i love that book. This story is all about building the world around Ira and Atou, the slow progression of his growing evil empire. There are a ton of political ad global relationships, thrown completely out of whack with his arrival and they do a decent job exploring that decimated balance, even if we are only a few chapters into this narrative. Ira makes for a pretty decent Momon facsimile but, instead of transferring over with his entire arsenal and stronghold intact, he has to rebuild everything from his glory days, in this new world, from scratch; Something he is incredibly eager to do. That, alone, s enough to hook me but the characters, themselves, are pretty endearing, too. Ira is kind of an aloof scatterbrain but his precise strategic genius really shines through while Atou gives off wild Yandere Yuno vibes which, if you know anything about me, is right up my alley. he art is also very gorgeous, imbued with this earthy, gritty, aesthetic that is holly unique in the world of manga. The only problem i have with this book is there are a few exposition chapters where the plot doesn’t progresses. You definitely need the information but it stalls the acing of the story overall. All in all, this book is amazing. Great art, dope plot, fantastic characters, and enough potential to keep you going from one chapter to the next. I love this thing’s narrative trajectory and definitely recommend cats check it out.

Manga the Week of 6/30/21
SEAN: The end of the fiscal year! What books are just barely part of their publisher’s 20-21 financials?
Airship has an early digital title: Loner Life in Another World (Hitoribocchi no Isekai Kouryaku ~ Cheat Skill wa Urikiredatta ~), a title that may sound familiar as Kaiten Books has been putting out the manga. The premise is exactly what you’d expect, but I am actually giving this one a try, as I’ve heard the original Japanese is so impenetrable that even hardcore readers have trouble figuring it out. I want to see how the translators do.
ASH: It does sound as though they may be doing some heavy lifting!
SEAN: Airship also has Drugstore in Another World 2 (early digital) and Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash 15 (print).
Cross Infinite World has Apocalypse Bringer Mynoghra: World Conquest Starts with the Civilization of Ruin (Isekai Mokushiroku Mynoghra: Hametsu no Bunmei de Hajimeru Sekai Seifuku), a title that… does not sound like their usual sort of book. Our hero is an ill young man who ends up reincarnated as an evil God. Overlord fans might enjoy this.
Two digital debuts for J-Novel Club. Reborn to Master the Blade: From Hero-King to Extraordinary Squire (Eiyu-oh, Bu wo Kiwameru tame Tensei su. Soshite, Sekai Saikyou no Minarai Kisi ) is the story of a hero-king who wants to live his next life as a warrior. He’s reincarnated… but as a noble daughter who’s ineligible to be a knight. What now?
ASH: Hmmm, that might have some potential?
MELINDA: This might be interesting.
SEAN: The other title is The Sidekick Never Gets the Girl, Let Alone the Protag’s Sister! (Shinyuu Mob no Ore ni Shujinkou no Imouto ga Horeru Wake ga Nai), the story of a former hero in a fantasy world reincarnated as a normal Japanese high school kid. He wants to be dull and normal, and let his handsome popular friend be the protagonist… then he meets said friend’s little sister.
Also out next week: Ascendance of a Bookworm 13, The Great Cleric 3, My Next Life As a Villainess 9, and A Wild Last Boss Appeared! 5.
ASH: Hooray, Bookworm!
A print debut for Kodansha with Peach Boy Riverside, which we’ve seen in digital-only format. A retelling of the Momotaro legend in fantasy world format.
ASH: A reimagining of Momotaro, you say? That completely slipped by me when it was released digitally.
SEAN: Also out in print: That Time I Got Reincarnated As a Slime 16 and UQ Holder 22.
Debuting digitally is Quality Assurance in Another World (Kono Sekai wa Fukanzen Sugiru), a Comic Days title about a young girl who meets a “Seeker”, someone who tries to fix problems in their world. But… just what *is* their world, anyway?
Also out is the 6th and final volume of Atsumori-kun’s Bride to Be, A Couple of Cuckoos 4, Heaven’s Design Team 6, I Fell in Love After School 8 (also a final volume), Seven Shakespeares 16, and Shojo FIGHT! 17.
MICHELLE: I have really enjoyed Atsumori-kun’s Bride to Be, and look forward to completing it. I liked I Fell in Love After School too, but haven’t read as much of that one.
SEAN: Seven Seas has If It’s for My Daughter, I’d Even Defeat a Demon Lord 6 (this is the manga), Magical Girl Site 15 and the 8th and final volume of Merman in My Tub.
ASH: Wow, it’s been a long time (a few years) since we last saw a new volume Merman in My Tub!
SEAN: Sol Press has the 4th and final volume of Why Shouldn’t a Detestable Demon Lord Fall in Love?!.
Yen On debuts The Detective Is Already Dead (Tantei wa Mou, Shinde Iru), the story of the sidekick to a famous detective. After said detective died, he theoretically returns to normal life… but then a girl shows up who looks an awful lot like the dead detective. This is supposedly excellent.
MICHELLE: Hm. I’m intrigued.
ANNA: I am as well!
ASH: Same!
MELINDA: And I!
SEAN: There’s also Bofuri: I Don’t Want to Get Hurt So I’ll Max Out My Defense 2, A Sister’s All You Need 10, and Suppose a Kid from the Last Dungeon Boonies Moved to a Starter Town 6.
The debut for Yen Press is Farewell to My Alter: Nio Nakatani Short Story Collection, which is what it says. By the creator of Bloom Into You.
Yen also gives us After School Bitchcraft 2, A Certain Magical Index 23, the 2nd and final Dear NOMAN, Heterogenia Linguistico 3, High School Prodigies Have It Easy Even in Another World! 10, the 11th and final The Honor Student at Magic High School, I Cannot Reach You 2, Kakegurui Twin 10, Love at Fourteen 10, Mieruko-chan 3, My Youth Romantic Comedy Is Wrong As I Expected 15, Play It Cool, Guys 2, Sacrificial Princess and the King of Beasts 13, the 3rd and final Strawberry Fields Once Again, Sword Art Online: Project Alicization 3, and Trinity Seven 23.
ASH: That’s quite the list!
SEAN: To balance your books, you need to buy more manga! What are you getting?
