1500-1599 Recap Part 54:

Adam and Karina married.

Rose’s triplets aged up as did Ambrose’s twins. William definitely seemed to be the best blend of his parents genetics at this point and Margery seemed to be an Ann clone though it was early to tell, Spoiler she was. 

Isabel and Tatsuya married. 

Cecily became a child and was recognized as the future head of her household.

Adam’s first child Joan was born.

Stormbringer trilogy: Isabel Cooper

Originally I wasn’t going to review this series. I picked it up on whim, wasn’t sure I felt strongly about it at all after the first one, but grabbed the other two anyway, and here we are. Just three books, it seems reasonable to do them all at once.

* I would like to point out that I really think the covers for books 2 & 3 should be swapped. Book 2 is about an aristocrat-healer, while 3 is about a priest-knight who carries a sword for a living. My head cannon works much better with the swap!

So!

If you tire of romances that emphasize the need for one to protect the other as a key point of tension or romance, have I got a trilogy for you! Three books where not a single lead spends time worrying about whether the other can care for him/herself. Everyone is competent, recognizing complementary skills when present and, while taking nothing for granted, relying on the other person to do their job without anyone looking over their shoulder. Very LGBTQA+ friendly. These books move at a leisurely pace, with dry humor and conversations among equals. It is tonaly different from a lot of others I’ve read in the genre, and while it can come across as slow, the more I read the more I appreciate it.

The Stormbringer

A human general has been frozen in time for a hundred years, having trapped the evil wizard bent on destroying the world along with him. He’s awoken from this stasis a couple of months after the evil wizard’s minions—having survived and rebuilt a century after the world was devastated by massive storms that have left humanity a shell of its former self—released said evil wizard back on the world. The woman who frees him is a Sentinel—warriors reforged/enhanced by the gods with abilities that make them something other, and the protectors of humanity—with the help of her sword, embodied by the dead wizard/former lover of said general. All together they have to warn and rally humanity against this revived threat, if they can survive the obstacles in their path, both old (and known to the general) or new (and known to the Sentinel). There’s interesting conflict as the general and the wizard-sword come to terms with their new relationship (the general not having realized the passage of time and now his lover is dead but still present, the wizard having morned and then lived the rest of his life only to be able to reconnect with the man he loved so much) while the general and Sentinel deal with their attraction and not wanting to hurt the sword they both care for. There’s some action and eventually some additional side characters that help flesh out this world of magic-with-limits and various gods. It’s not terribly dynamic—both characters are utterly competent and smart, adapting well to challenges and their new partnership. They are all very much adults, to the point that, when the ensouled sword has to remind them they are all adults, time has passed, and he’s perfectly happy to grant his blessing on a relationship, you wonder why they even needed the teenage reluctance to communicate, when they are otherwise so mature about everything else. It’s an interesting world, and interesting interpersonal dynamic, plenty of wry humor, and largely devoid of the usual melodrama and miscommunication many in this genre rely on for tension.

The Night Born

Our heroine is a Sentinel working as a diplomat to recruit a city-state, which had escaped rather unscathed from both the war one hundred years ago as well as the aftermath, to join the new war. The council gives her two weeks to convince them, leaving plenty of time to get to know the leading man, the black sheep of an aristocratic family who cools his heels holding down their council seat when he isn’t busy running a medical clinic for those too poor to seek out the official healers at the temple, a calling his family seems to view as a somewhat embarassing hobby they barely tolerate. After he proves he knows which end of a sword to hold while still being a compassionate healer through an assassination attempt and a ball with a very demonic ending, he winds up sheltering her while she recovers from serious injury as the city seeks to arrest her for a double murder. He learns his family is behind it all, through worshiping the devil and performing regular child sacrifice, in addition to a partially failed attempt to reincarnate evil in a baby they since misplaced. Fortunately for him, he gets to complete seminary/medical school in only two weeks and can join the warrior-lady where she is needed on the front lines. The action is better in this one, the betrayal genuine, and again both leads are capable and confident, treating their relationship like adults. Dry humor and honest discussion characterize most of their interactions. Again, an interesting world, with nice people you can root for getting together.

Blood and Ember

I like the two leads in this final installment of the trilogy. We find out where the lost demon baby is, now grown into a priest-knight who has dedicated his life to truth and justice, and now must travel to the place the world fell apart to find out if the part of him that is the devil is going to save or destroy the world. A Sentinel who has worked with him for years volunteers to help guide him there, with the expectation that if things go badly she will have to be the one to kill him before the world ends. There is a lot of travel, hunger, and fatigue in this one, with quiet conversations that have both of them falling through lust into love, even when opportunities for more than a kiss are rare. These actually have a moment where the gallant knight reacts to protect the woman, and she gives him an icy glare and he promptly apologizes. It is immediately suspected to be a sign of his corruption, though, lol. As with the other books this is really just about the two of them, their conversations wry, intelligent, and considerate. Their relationship feels more durable, perhaps, than the other two, possibly due to the lack of distractions and any forces that might disapprove, so they can spend more time eyeing each other appreciatively. A satisfying ending to this gentle, articulate series.

Bottom line: An interesting world, with characters worth liking and rooting for, filled with kind, intelligent conversations between people with important jobs to do and immense respect for one another. I’ve said it so many times, but plenty of dry humor. Slow pacing, not a griping page turner, but a pleasant story and a lovely contrast to some of the other books I’ve been reading. A refreshing palate cleanser.

the room was a blur of motion and color, the air thick with the scent of spilled alcohol and the haze of cigarette smoke. the pulse of the music thrummed through the floorboards, setting a rhythm that seemed to dictate the movements of the slytherin students as they danced and cheered. you leaned against the cool stone wall, watching the game of beer pong unfold with a detached amusement. mattheo and blaise were a formidable team, their laughter echoing off the walls as they scored point after point, while pansy and draco's competitive banter added a sharp edge to the atmosphere. it was the kind of party that you used to love, but tonight, it all felt a bit too much.

you decided to take a break from the chaos, making your way through the crowded room, looking for a familiar face. your eyes scanned over the faces, some flushed with excitement, others with the beginnings of a hangover. lorenzo berkshire caught your gaze from across the room, his dark eyes twinkling as he leaned in to whisper something to the girl he was flirting with. you rolled your eyes and continued your search for theo, wondering if he had retreated to one of the quieter corners to escape the cacophony.

as you moved through the party, the twins, fred and george, intercepted you with mischievous grins. "looking for someone?" fred asked, his hand offering you a beer. you took it, smiling politely. "theo nott," you replied. "ah, the mysterious one," george said with a wink. "last we saw, he was playing hide and seek with a group of his adoring fans." they both chuckled, their playful teasing a welcome distraction.

you thanked them and continued your search, the music's bassline vibrating in your chest. the party was in full swing, but theo's usual charm and presence were nowhere to be found. the crowd grew denser, a mix of laughter and shouts as the game grew more intense. you felt a gentle tug on your sleeve and turned to see luna lovegood, her eyes wide with curiosity. "have you seen theo?" you asked, raising your voice over the din. she tilted her head, considering for a moment before pointing towards the balcony doors. "i think he went outside," she said, her voice delicate as ever.

you pushed through the crowd and stepped into the cool night air, the stark contrast from the stuffy room making you gasp for breath. the moon was high and full, casting a soft glow over the grounds. you spotted theo immediately, leaning against the castle wall, a cigarette hanging loosely from his lips. he looked lost in thought, his eyes fixed on the distant horizon.

his posture was relaxed, but there was a tension in his shoulders that spoke of his discomfort with the raucous festivities inside. you approached him slowly, the gravel crunching under your feet. "mind if i join?" you called out, your voice low and gentle. he glanced over, a ghost of a smile playing on his lips. "thought you'd be in there, cheering for the champs," he said, nodding towards the party.

you took a seat beside him, the cold stone wall biting into your back. "not really my scene tonight," you confessed, taking a sip of the beer that had grown warm in your hand. "yeah, me neither," theo said, taking a long drag of his cigarette. the silence between you grew comfortable, filled only by the distant sound of the party and the occasional hoot of an owl.

theo's eyes flickered to you, the embers of his cigarette casting a warm glow on his face. "you okay?" he asked, his voice genuinely concerned. you shrugged, feeling the weight of the night's expectations lifting. "just needed some fresh air," you replied, watching as he exhaled a plume of smoke. the air around you felt charged, as if the very molecules were holding their breath.

his gaze searched yours for a moment before he spoke again. "it's not easy, is it?" theo said, breaking the silence. "keeping up with all of this." you knew he wasn't just talking about the party. the unspoken understanding between you grew stronger with every shared glance. "sometimes i feel like i'm drowning," you admitted, your voice barely above a whisper.

he nodded, taking another drag of his cigarette. "i know what you mean," he said, his eyes never leaving yours. the warmth of his hand found yours, and for a moment, you felt like you weren't alone in the sea of noise and expectations. "theo," you began, but he leaned in, cutting off your words with a kiss.

his lips were warm and firm, the taste of tobacco faint on his breath. his ring clad hand slid up to grip the back of your neck, pulling you closer as if he was afraid you would slip away. you felt your heart stutter in your chest, the suddenness of the kiss taking you by surprise. but you didn't pull away. instead, you melted into him, the warmth of his embrace a comfort you hadn't realized you needed.

his thumb traced gentle circles on your skin, sending shivers down your spine. theo's other hand rested on your hip, grounding you as the world around you faded away. the music and the laughter were just a distant echo, the only sounds that of your mingled breaths and the crackle of the cigarette between you. it was a moment of pure, unadulterated intimacy, a stark contrast to the chaos of the party just a few feet away.

you pulled back, your cheeks flushed and your eyes wide with surprise. "theo," you whispered, your voice trembling slightly. he looked at you, his own eyes dark with something unreadable. "yeah?" he responded, the corner of his mouth quirking up in a smirk that was all too familiar.

you opened your mouth to speak, but the words got tangled in your throat. his beauty had always been a silent punch to the gut, leaving you struggling to breathe, let alone form coherent sentences. "you're just… so pretty," you stumbled out, your eyes flicking down to his chest, where his shirt lay open, revealing a hint of his collarbones. it was a clumsy compliment, but it was all you could manage.

theo chuckled, the sound low and rumbling. "thanks," he said, his eyes never leaving yours. he took another drag of his cigarette, the orange ember burning brightly in the dark. "you're not so bad yourself," he added with a wink. the confidence in his voice made your cheeks burn even hotter.

you fidgeted with the hem of your shirt, suddenly aware of how close you were sitting to him. the warmth of his body was intoxicating, and you found yourself leaning into it, craving more of his touch. his hand on your neck had left a trail of fire, and you couldn't help but wonder what it would feel like if he kissed you again.

the silence stretched out, filled with unspoken thoughts and racing hearts. you felt your cheeks heat up as you stumbled over your words, trying to find the right ones to express the tumult of emotions churning inside you. "theo, i… i just…" your voice trailed off, and you bit your lower lip, feeling your heart thud in your chest.

his smirk softened into a gentle smile, and he reached out to tuck a strand of hair behind your ear. the touch sent an electric jolt through you, and you leaned into it, your eyes searching his for any sign of what he was thinking. "i know," he murmured, his voice a low rumble that seemed to resonate in your very soul. "i feel the same."

you took a deep breath, the scent of his cologne and the night air swirling around you. it was a heady combination, making you feel both lightheaded and grounded at the same time. the party inside beckoned, the music and laughter a siren's call that you couldn't ignore. "we should get back," you murmured, not really wanting to leave the sanctuary of his arms but knowing that you couldn't hide away forever.

theo nodded, stubbing out his cigarette against the wall before standing up. his hand found yours, the warmth of his skin sending a jolt through you as he pulled you to your feet. "yeah, we don't want to miss the grand finale," he said, his voice teasing. you couldn't help but laugh, the tension between you easing slightly as you allowed him to lead you back into the mayhem of the party.

Summary:

The stars twinkled bright, miles up in the night sky. Dusk had long since passed, and not even the moon shone now. The only light visible came from the slowly dying embers of a forgotten campfire, tiny fireflies flashing on and off, and the stars high above. The air was cool, an edge of a chill despite the scorching sun during the day. Though it was night, the wildlife was far from quiet. Soft chirps of birds, the screeching of a bat, even the sound of digging filled the otherwise silent atmosphere.

I was just minding my business, humming and eating my trail mix in my chilly cell in Azkaban, harmonizing with the screams of fellow college sufferers prisoners when a patronus burst into my cell, dropping a nice fluffy blanket, a key, and a heart shaped sticky note.

I am thrilled and immediately unlock my cell and run as fast as I can out of the cursed building. It isn't until later when I am curled up with a book and shoving my face full of sweets that I finally get to read your note. Pulling my favorite purple pen out of a drawer I write a reply.

Dear Secret Valentine,

Thank you so much for the ask about my babies! And the patronus! It was enough to keep the dementors away for today but Sebastian is yelling in my brain that I should have sent them his way. I told him college is first priority, then I'll have time to work on saving his sorry ass. He pouted but I told him he got himself there in the first place.

Long answer to the questions below: )

Johanna:

As a child she was taught that love was just given. That was the kind of love she tried to give others. However what she was taught was different from what she learned. She learned that love had to be gained. You had to have or give something of value to be loved and wanted. Her father wanted her to have magic, something she didn't have until she was 15. When they left for England and tried to survive on their own she came to believe she only gained her mothers love by helping shoulder all the burdens. With her sister it was performing magic for her, which Isabelle was jealous of. When she went to Hogwarts more people loved her when she helped them. Even though she knew Professor Fig didn't want her to think that way she still thought she had to gain his favor, prove her worth. She thought that with Sebastian it would be different, until he called her ignorant. After a while she started to not want to be loved anymore if it just brought pain. She couldn't always give them what they wanted, let them down. So she pushed them away. That changed with Ominis though. He cared about her even when she was breaking. He never once asked something of her selfishly. He told her she was enough, she told him he was enough. They loved each other the way they always should have been loved. This way she came to forgive Sebastian.

Ember:

Ember is the happiest of my MC children. She grew up under the careful watch of her very in love parents Edvin and Anna and her older brother Kalle. She also has a little sister named Jana. She saw the right kind of love, not fading through hardship, never giving up, loving each other when not lovable. Her family supported and loved her even when the other purebloods laughed and shamed her for being a squib. They said her spirited soul was magical enough. She saw love in her friend's loyalty and sacrifice. How Poppy risked everything for the animals, Natty's love to get justice for her father, Sebastian's love and loyalty to Anne. Even though he went about things wrong she didn't give up on him because love didn't do that. He never saw what real care was, neither did Ominis. Ember may have a temper but her heart burns brighter. She became their light. Sebastian showed his love in how he did everything he could to help her later, to show his gratefulness. They burn for each other, passionate and fierce.

Adelia:

The closest thing Adelia ever saw of love was her mother. Gentle hands tending to a skinned knee, a voice singing her to sleep in the dark hours of the night, begging her daughters life be spared, taking the torture and death on herself instead. Adelia gave the same love she remembered to the other girls in the orphanage. Love was soft, quiet, and sweet, never speaking against the matrons who said they loved her back. But love wasn't enough. Love was powerful her mother had said. Yet it didn't save her mother's life, it didn't keep her in her home even when she lost control of a power she didn't know she held. Love was weak. Love can be used to control others. Anyone will do anything for it. It was power, a tear, a quivering lip, "Garreth I thought you loved me, so please help me do this." Love made others weak, so she would never fall in love. She wouldn't die for it.

....we shall have to see what happens to Adelia. Will she always be like this? 👀😅

December Reading

So the problem with using New Year's as a time to take stock and make plans or to set a pattern for the year to come is that generally I spend New Year's celebrating Christmas with whichever part of my family I didn't see earlier in the month. So I'm not in a familiar space and often I don't even have my laptop with me, which has, for example, the .txt file where I keep track of my reading.

Luckily this month that wasn't complicated.

Recent: I listened to the audiobooks of Allie Therin's Roaring Twenties Magic series again, while sewing. This was exactly what I needed and I enjoyed it very much.

That's it, that's all I finished this month.

I did reread "Christabel" on the subway one day, and I bought waayyy too many books and read some scholarly introductions to 18th century literature.

Current: I'm almost done rereading The Ironmaster's Tale.

I am about halfway through Isabel Cooper's Blood and Ember, which is the conclusion to a fantasy trilogy. I'm enjoying it, but I won't finish it before I need to renew it.

But at least I can renew it, while The Notebook: A History of Thinking on Paper and Freya Marske's Swordcrossed (both of which I've just started) have holds on them and I also probably won't finish them before they have to go back. Oh well, I can put more holds on.

Future: I might just reread Daniel Cabot Puts Down Roots. That sounds like it'd be great right now. Also there was an excellent Yuletide fic for it.

Beyond that I might try to space things out a bit more. I may be hitting a point where I can only focus on one or two books at once, which would be weird.

Friendship Showdown: Preliminary Round #31

Propaganda:

Lilith Clawthorne & Hooty (The Owl House): They were a friendship that absolutely nobody expected, but it ended up being really wholesome. They call each other Lulu and Hootsifer. When they’re apart, they write letters to each other as pen pals. Hooty is a mysterious but powerful being that is never explained within canon, and Lilth is just some nerd. However, she’s one of the only people who will take Hooty seriously. When the apocalypse comes, Hooty sacrifices himself to protect Lilith without a second thought. Their reunion is really sweet. They’re great!

Foster and The Ghost (Archivist Wasp): Where do I even start. (Spoilers ahead obviously) They’re the only two survivors of a lab experiment to create supersoldiers, and they survived largely because of the bond between them. Eventually, Foster of them went rogue and the ghost had more reservations and ended up turning Foster into the government, where she was tortured and eventually lost her memory and asked him to kill her because she still just knew that she trusted him, even with no memory, and he refused (one of his greatest regrets). Years and years later, after the downfall of his entire society and also after his death, he tried for his entire afterlife to find her. He forgot his name but never hers. He eventually found Wasp/Isabel and searched across the entire ghost dimension for Foster with Wasp. There’s a metaphor in the book that they’re like Carrion Boy and Ember Girl- essentially, clashing personalities but their fates are so intertwined that they’re allies or enemies but never apart. They’re like the embodiment of the idea that the only thing worse than being with someone is being apart from them. And the whole thing is platonic too.
