colin stirling, twenty eight, intelligence officer

colin grew up with the twin drum beats of family loyalty and legacy and, as much as he says none of that matters all that much at the end of the day, he still wears that damn signet ring day in and day out.

the stirlings are an old, old family. no, older than that. just a little bit older than that. colin and his siblings were never allowed to forget it. their father, francis stirling, is a baronet and their mother, isabel, was born a fleming. alexander, the eldest of their lot, is the heir to all of this while colin sits comfortably in third place, behind james but ahead of moira so he'll take it.

being third meant that he never had to take too much of anything very seriously growing up. they split their time between london (so much more socially invigorating) and the country house in scotland. in-between, the boys went to harrow and moira was tutored at home. all things considered, it was school breaks that kept colin going. alexander and james were better suited for london and that was fine for them but being let loose in the countryside was the place that felt like home for him.

he was rowdy as a kid, frequently coming home muddy and bruised from whatever nonsense he'd gotten into that day. at school and on the rare occasions he could be kept indoors, he liked history and stories of great stirling and fleming deeds from the past - the bloodier the better. this energy was quickly funneled into sports and school, lest he somehow be responsible for an uprising. football and studying tended to tire him out well enough during the school term and so long as no mud or blood made its way onto the antique carpets, then so be it during breaks.

like other stirling men, he went to cambridge and was a member of trinity - less because it was what he really wanted and more because no one could wield legacy like a weapon as well as his father. it really didn't matter all that much what colin got up to, as long as the family didn't get dragged into it. trinity was mostly a blur of club life and parties between class. colin managed it all like a champion. the rowdy charm he'd always had crystallized by then and and he was popular with the gents and the debs. he studied languages, imagining he'd find something to do with them eventually. harrow had smoothed out any burr he'd been born with and he quickly picked up french, german, and italian, speaking them all with a perfectly neutral accent.

like all other third sons of stirling men, colin landed in the army after cambridge. officer's training, naturally, finding himself funneled through to intelligence where his ear for languages paid off. he hates saying it out loud, as proving his father is right about anything pains him, but the army really did turn out to be the best place for him. his hollow leg from university remains but it steadied him, gave him a purpose, and meant that he was a hell of a lot more prepared than alexander or james when war broke out. he'll be damned if he has any idea what james does for the war effort but alexander has a position in the war office that keeps him safely ensconced in london with churchill.

for his part, colin is at bletchley park where he continues his work in army intelligence and if he said any more, he'd have to kill you.

the thing about colin is that no one ever taught him how to pick his fights so he will pick every single last one of them. he's a deeply righteous man who takes things like loyalty, fairness, and justice very seriously. his boundless energy was all funneled into the war and if he were in a better position to fight, he would but intelligence is where he's best and he's proud enough to stay put.

he's still a social creature, though hardly at the rate he was when he was a student. polite society was always far more the venue of his brothers and mother and while he's not sad to see it dry up, he does occasionally miss a proper society rager - open liquor cabinets. he has strong opinions on whisky and if the nature of his work keeps his circle small, he at least has made good friends here.

as for what happens after all of this (insert incredibly vague gesture here), he isn't quite sure. colin is fully aware of how stupidly lucky he is to not be in a combat position. the decisions he helps make are ones he doesn't make lightly and that the responsibility of it no longer frightens him makes him wonder if this is where he belongs rather than where he wound up. diplomacy? the army? pestering alexander professionally as a land steward?

probably best to let the war end first.

Etat des Lieux are collective showings where artists and audiences are brought together. Artists are invited to shape a programme during which they share their ongoing research or try-outs. Nadine’s role here is guiding and supporting: sensing which artists are ready to present something publicly, finding the right combination of artists around a theme, providing content and production support, and looking for the ideal cultural partner.

Etat des Lieux lands in BUDA at the end of October 2023. The artists participating are Caroline Daish, Mathilde Maillard, Emma Lee Harder, Isabel Burr Raty and Lucia Palladino. They take the audience on an (imaginary) journey along water, earth, forest. A day that aims to generate energy with song, storytelling and speculative science fiction.

During a summer journey along the canals and rivers of Wallonia and Flanders, Captains Caroline, Emma and Mathilde collected and recorded some navigating stories as some testimonies on the digitalisation of the canal locks. They also used the water environment as tools for singing improvisations to invent some She-Shanties (an English pun on the word ‘Sea Shanties’). Inside the She Shanties project, Emma Lee Harder, Caroline Daish and Mathilde Maillard share their common love for vocal improvisation, the mix and remix of what’s being said, sound and radiophonic situations, women empowerment circles and the slowness of going along the water.

In Kortrijk, you can embark on a touristic boat and enjoy a selection of She Shanties & Other stories piece and improvisations along the Leie river with the captains Emma and Mathilde.
