"I don't feel trapped. It's a lot to process, sure, but I won't...I wouldn't feel forced into anything." He felt pretty confident about that. He was still in the early stages of processing, but the thought of a child didn't deter him. Part of him felt a sense of excitement. His child, his first one. It's what he wanted, maybe a bit out of order and in a very confusing way, but this is the life he had wanted. Then, she said there's no love here. Months ago, he would've agreed. They were not that kind of pair. Now, he wasn't too sure. This was not anywhere near the right time or place, but Isaac needed answers. He had to know why she was deciding for him, before he even processed. "So, what are you saying? You don't want me in your life...or the baby's?"

His answer wasn't a good one, Isaac knew that. But, he also was not going to lie to her. When he saw her pushed into a car, he didn't stop to consider or think of a plan. He just sprung into action and drove after her. Which would've been fine. If he had been successful in getting her back to his car after her drowning incident, and driving her away from here. Isaac knew that relying on his friends to come help them out was a long shot, but it was honestly all he had left. So, he held on to that, in an attempt to keep them both from freaking out. "No," he sighed out. "Any weapons I had on me are gone." Any mercenary worth their time knew to check for weapons. "How do you even know so much?"

Isaac's attention quickly turned to the source of the noise as the doors opened, but there was barely any time to react as he watched Nettie's hair pulled by one of the men. His eyes locked with Nettie's for a second, and he understood her look. Think of something, anything. "No wait, please! Take me instead. Come on, I could give you more of a fight, take me!" But no matter what he said, they were too focused on her to take his offer. The zipties dug into his wrists as he pulled on them to get closer to them, but he was quickly met with another blow to his face, one that sent him flying back to the floor. The Man. Jazz. "What"?" He breathed out in disbelief, his busted lip causing a wave of pain to course through him. "She's not—we're not! You have this all wrong. Let her go, or I swear to god—" he shouted, his loud voice booming in the room. Yet, it did nothing.The impotence he felt at this moment was unlike anything he had ever felt before, only close to the feeling he felt when his parents died.

She hadn't really noticed when they dozed off waiting for Isaac to show, and part of her was tempted to not wake him up. He looked so peaceful sleeping, but she knew that Isaac would not flake on them like this. And if he couldn't stop by anymore, he'd at least call or text to let them know. Laurel sat up on the couch, watching as Eli remain occupied with his phone. It was a split second, but she quickly stood up and nodded, scurrying away to their room as she made a few calls explaining the situation in a way that wouldn't compromise Isaac. "Yes, chief Coleman, I understand, but there's a developing situation in the Ivanov case. We touched on this on Wednesday, yes." As she remained on the line, she quickly got dressed and tied her hair up. "I'll send the coordinates, and I'll meet the team there. Assuming you clear me for this."

Hanging up the phone, she walked back out to meet him in their office, taking her weapon from him. "Coleman agreed to provide back-up. We'll get there earlier, so it should give us some time to get Isaac out before the team arrives." Still, even as she spoke, Laurel could tell that his mind was already running in different directions. "Hey, we'll get him back," with that, she slid her weapon in the holster before grabbing the car keys. With this situation, she didn't want him to drive.

Eli was quick to jump from the car as soon as she brought the car to a stop. It had been some time since they officially worked together, but Laurel knew that she didn't need to be right next to him the whole time. They had their communication down. While he followed a trail from the waterfall, she moved in the other direction. And, when they regrouped, she handed him Isaac's phone - his missed calls and text messages on display. The warehouse was dimly lit, and while he peered in, she quickly scouted the perimeter. Anyone they'd need to deal with remained inside the building. She nodded, capturing his sign - four and two civilians. Great. One was probably Isaac, but who was the other civilian? "No other way to do it," she whispered at him before they made their way inside.

Stepping into the warehouse proved easier than expected, but instead of encouraging her, it made her uneasy. If no one was guarding the entrance, what were they focused on? Or, who? Isaac. She stood against the wall, listening for any indication of which direction they should head to first. After a few seconds, she motioned to the right and drew her gun as they walked down the hallway. Firing the weapon was her last resort. The moment either of them did, they'd be exposed. But, it never hurt to have it ready. "Okay, remember the plan. We find Isaac, you get him, and you go. Alright? That way there's no trace of you or him anywhere." It's what they had discussed some time ago. Benching Isaac without getting him involved, except now they had to get him out without the agency knowing he was the reason they were called in. "I'll be here when the team arrives." Just then, she heard the door open and two men stepped out into the hallway. Okay, they've been spotted. One last look at the love of her life before jumping into action.

"It's not that I don't want—I am still processing. This wasn't part of the plan. The last thing I want is for you to feel trapped. You don't want a relationship not that you can if you would. I'm basically going to do this on my own. I'm still wrapping my head around it. You're easy since you come in every few months drop by say hey and then leave. I'm the one with this kid. What makes you think that you wouldn't feel forced by this. I also wouldn't want a pity relationship because you got a kid out of it. There's no love here then why would I submit myself and it to this?'

She tried not to freak out, there had to be a way out. The way Issac tried to joke about his friends knowing didn't make her feel better. Leave it to him to come in without a plan. Still, her face showed nothing of her inner storm. "Okay, do you have a pocket knife?" There was once a documentary she saw and speaking with Laurel she had gotten pointers.

Clearly there was no time for a makeshift plan as the doors opened and Nettie felt her hair being pulled hard. She let out a small yelp of pain. Getting pulled her hair was not as sexy as she once thought it was. Nettie shared a look with Issac in not so many words telling him he better think of a plan. Hell, she'd take him kicking one of them in the balls too. anything really. she had close to no time to react before she felt the warm gush of blood pool around her stomach.

A gruff voice echoed through the walls, "Shouldn't have messed with the Man."

The tap to his side made Eli groggily hum in response. He was tired and not happy to be woken up but still he rubbed his eyes and covered a yawn as he reached for his phone. No text or sign of Issac. He quickly called him and it went to voice-mail. Weird and unheard of even on his busiest days, Issac still answered. Worry and concern grew the more there was no sign of life. His next resort was to track him and once he did, he jumped off the sofa. "We gotta go. Call your supervisor we need a team by the waterfalls.

He got dressed in record time and went into their safe, where her weapons went. Punching in the code he grabbed Laurel's and saw his own. The one that had been retired for a very long time. "He's in trouble. His phone pinged at Westchester street. Abandoned warehouse near that plant." Eli started as his mind ran a mile a minute. He had a plan somewhat and didn't even think to go through channels to get cleared. His family was in trouble and there was nothing that'd stop him. Fastening his vest he put his sweater over it and cocked the weapon in his hand noting how many he could stun.

When they arrived Eli used his tracking skills that followed from the waterfall down below. Southeast direction would have brought them closer to civilization than further so he followed that. He didn't need to hover over laurel. They each had their own skillset that enabled them to be a team not to mess with. It lead them to the dingy warehouse. Green eyes looked through a side of the window and sighed when he could make out a few people, one of which had a knife. Then saw a fuzzy silhouetted figured. He could assume that was Issac and knew of only about six people he'd try to jump in front of a weapon over. He gave Laurel a sign that said it was 4 and two civilians. Sharing a look with his girl he sighed. "Do it like Panama?"

ABOUT ISAAC BABEL AND HIS ACHIEVEMENTS

Isaac Emmanuilovich Babel (13 July 1894 – 27 January 1940) was a Russian writer, journalist, playwright, and literary translator. He is best known as the author of Red Cavalry and Odessa Stories, and has been acclaimed as "the greatest prose writer of Russian Jewry."

Babel was arrested by the NKVD on 15 May 1939 on fabricated charges of terrorism and espionage, and executed on 27 January 1940.

BABEL'S MARRIAGE LIFE AND AFFAIRS

Babel married Yevgenia Gronfein on August 9, 1919, in Odessa. In 1929, their marriage produced a daughter, Nathalie Babel Brown, who grew up to become a scholar and editor of her father's life and work. By 1925, the Babels' marriage was souring.

Yevgenia Babel, feeling betrayed by her husband's infidelities and motivated by her increasing hatred of communism, emigrated to France. Babel saw her several times during his visits to Paris.

During this period, he also entered into a long-term romantic relationship with Tamara Kashirina. Together, they had a son, Emmanuil Babel, who was later adopted by his stepfather Vsevolod Ivanov. Emmanuil's name was changed to Mikhail Ivanov, and he later became a noted artist.

After the final break with Tamara, Babel briefly attempted to reconcile with Yevgenia and they had their daughter Natalie in 1929. In 1932, Babel met a Siberian-born Gentile named Antonina Pirozhkova (1909–2010). In 1934, after Babel failed to convince his wife to return to Moscow, he and Antonina began living together. In 1939, their common law marriage produced a daughter, Lydia Babel.

BABEL'S TRAGIC ARREST AND PERSECUTION

On May 15, 1939, Antonina Pirozhkova was awakened by four NKVD agents pounding upon the door of their Moscow apartment. Although surprised, she agreed to accompany them to Babel's dacha in Peredelkino.

Babel was then placed under arrest. According to Pirozhkova(babel's affair partner turned wife) : "In the car, one of the men sat in back with Babel and me while the other one sat in front with the driver. 'The worst part of this is that my mother won't be getting my letters', and then he was silent for a long time. I could not say a single word. Babel asked the secret policeman sitting next to him, 'So I guess you don't get too much sleep, do you?' And he even laughed.

As we approached Moscow, I said to Babel, 'I'll be waiting for you, it will be as if you've gone to Odessa... only there won't be any letters....' He answered, 'I ask you to see that the child not be made miserable.' "But I don't know what my destiny will be." At this point, the man sitting beside Babel said to me, "We have no claims whatsoever against you."

We drove to the Lubyanka Prison and through the gates. The car stopped before the massive, closed door where two sentries stood guard.

Babel kissed me hard and said, "Someday we'll see each other..." And without looking back, he got out of the car and went through that door.

According to Nadezhda Mandelstam, Babel's arrest became the subject of an urban legend within the NKVD. NKVD agents, she explains, were fond of "telling stories about the risks they ran" in arresting "enemies of the people". Babel had, according to NKVD lore, "seriously wounded one of our men" while "resisting arrest". Mrs. Mandelstam contemptuously declared, "Whenever I hear such tales I think of the tiny hole in the skull of Isaac Babel, a cautious, clever man with a high forehead, who probably never once in his life held a pistol in his hands."

According to Peter Constantine, from the day of his arrest, Isaac Babel "became a nonperson in the Soviet Union. His name was blotted out, removed from literary dictionaries and encyclopedias, and taken off school and university syllabi. He became unmentionable in any public venue. When the film director Mark Donskoi's famous Gorky trilogy premiered the following year, Babel, who had worked on the screenplay, had been removed from the credits."

According to his file, "Case #419, Babel, I.E.", the writer was held at the Lubyanka and Butyrka Prisons for a total of eight months as a case was built against him for Trotskyism, terrorism, and spying for Austria and France.

At his initial interrogations, "Babel began by adamantly denying any wrongdoing, but then after three days he suddenly 'confessed' to what his interrogator was suggesting and named many people as co-conspirators. In all likelihood, he was tortured, almost certainly beaten."

His interrogators included Boris Rodos, who had a reputation as a particularly brutal torturer, even by the standards of the time, and Lev Schwartzmann, who tortured the renowned theatre director, Vsevolod Meyerhold. Among those he accused of conspiring with him were his close friends Sergei Eisenstein, Solomon Mikhoels, and Ilya Ehrenburg.

Despite months of pleading and letters sent directly to Beria, Babel was denied access to his unpublished manuscripts. In October 1939, Babel was again summoned for interrogation and denied all his previous testimony. A statement was recorded, "I ask the inquiry to take into account that, though in prison, I committed a crime. I slandered several people."

This led to further delays as the NKVD frantically attempted to salvage their cases against Mikhoels, Ehrenburg, and Eisenstein.

BABEL'S LEGACY

Although Babel's play Maria was very popular at Western European colleges during the 1960s, it was not performed in Babel's homeland until 1994. The first English translation appeared in 1966 in a translation by Michael Glenny in Three Soviet Plays (Penguin) under the title "Marya". Maria's American premiere, directed by Carl Weber, took place at Stanford University in 2004.

Several American writers have valued Babel's writings. Hubert Selby has called Babel "the closest thing I have to a literary influence." James Salter has named Babel his favorite short-story writer. "He has the three essentials of greatness: style, structure, and authority." George Saunders, when asked for a literary influence said "There's a Russian writer named Isaac Babel that I love. I can drop in anywhere in his works, read a few pages, and go, Oh yeah, language. It's almost like if you were tuning a guitar and you heard a beautifully tuned one and you say, Yeah, that's what we want. We want something that perfect. When I read him, it recalibrates my ear. It reminds me of the difference between an OK sentence and a really masterful sentence. Babel does it for me."

i. dominic was certain that he and louis wouldn’t have been able to attend the small get together his boss had set up , but the relief came when aaron’s father had volunteered to look after the smaller kids , and he knew he could be trusted. he had been by his fiance’s side the majority of the night , showering him with as much affection as he would allow. it was as if the rest of the world didn’t matter , he was surrounded with new and old friends , and it hadn’t felt more right. he was about to bring in the new year with the person that helped him love again , and hearing the countdown had shivers running down his spine; attention solely on louis. dominic had held onto him tightly , giving him a somewhat rough , passionate kiss as midnight hit , the television in the bar declaring the new year , and he had parted , to whisper against louis’ lips. ❛ happy new year , baby. ❜

ii. it was a real surprise that even if he worked in the bar with dominic , he and adam were invited to the gathering in the pleasuredome , but he certainly wasn’t about to complain. they had managed to sort old issues out through the course of the night —— and even managed to get forgiveness from reuben , despite what had happened to him. even then , the night was mostly himself and adam settled by the bar , helping themselves to drinks as they pleased ( though , non - alcoholic ). one thing he couldn’t get over , was that he had someone to spend the rest of his life with , he knew that the last year had been hectic , but with most known problems out of the way , he was sure that he and adam would have a better year following. as the clock struck midnight , shiro had stood up , to settle himself between adam’s legs , both hands on either side of his neck and a soft kiss was given to lips , the wolf smirking into it , and even as he pulled back , he tilted his head to whisper something to his fiance. ❛ happy new year , handsome , when we get back home , we’ll celebrate it properly , yeah ? ❜

iii. earlier in the night , kasia , august , isaac and their partners had chosen to move to the rooftop bar , more or less to take in the coolness of the air , and for august to see the fireworks as they had went off. august had held onto damon’s waist loosely , kasia doing the same on the opposing side , the pair leaning against the grim contently. both the hellhound and reaper had given each other a teasing smile when they heard the crowds outside counting down from ten , waiting until they declared the new year before they’d given a kiss to damon’s cheeks , the pair nuzzling against him afterwards , august captivated by the fireworks that went off , while kasia whispered softly. ❛ happy new year , sir. i can’t wait to spend it with both of you. ❜

iv. he and caligo hadn’t intended on doing anything too special , but with his family being in the bar , he hadn’t wanted to be the only one not joining in. though , he had taken caligo up to the roof when the other wolves had went up , alcohol hitting him that bit more as fresh air hit him. his drink had been placed on one of many tables surrounding them , placing his hands on caligo’s waist to give him gentle kisses , making the odd attempt to pull him that bit closer to him , more so when the crowds had started. like everyone else had done so —— he gave caligo a much warmer , lingering kiss when the fireworks had began , feeling butterflies in his stomach , and nothing would wipe the smile from his face. parting from caligo , he had merely whispered against his lips. ❛ i love you. happy new year , caligo. the first of many we’ll share. ❜

v. truthfully , letum didn’t want to do anything special for the new year , he wanted nothing more than to be by his soulmate’s side , being lazy and enjoying time alone with him , but it wasn’t how it would’ve ended up. of course. gabriel had a bar to run , and letum had simply decided to join him during the shift , all but clinging to him throughout the night. he had watched as loved up couples got closer and progressively drunker as the night went on , which was undoubtedly amusing to watch. but when the whole bar began their countdown , letum’s full attention went to gabriel , and he had put his arms around him , bringing him in for a kiss when the clock struck midnight , holding onto him tightly. but he wanted to finally set something straight , or at least bring a question up , while the moment was there. when they had parted , letum’s hand raised to cup gabriel’s cheek , head tilted to whisper against his ear. ❛ i wanna start the new year off right... gabriel —— i don’t wanna be friends. i wanna go into this year with you as my boyfriend. will... will you be mine , baby ? ❜

Even though there was a party going on, it was still a school day and homework needed to be done. Madelyn and Vincent had retreated to the more quiet dining hall to work on it together. They could overhear the drama going on in the kitchen. ‘Man, I feel like all of this is my fault...’ Vincent confessed to Madelyn. If he hadn’t told Celeste about Erika, maybe mom wouldn’t have even known about her now and the house would still be peaceful. ‘None of this is your fault, bro. It’s all Annabelle. She’s the one who manipulated you. Besides that, it’s not our fault mom is so obsessed with nobility. I’m sure no one blames you for all this,’ Madelyn told him. She sometimes felt like she was the only one in this house with a decent set of brains. Didn’t anyone realize it was better to just stay quiet about this whole arranged marriage thing? ‘Mom is getting old, she won’t live forever. My advice? Don’t get yourself involved anymore. It’s better to just wait until mom kicks the bucket and then we can do whatever we want with our lives without anyone trying to interfere.’ Vincent looked at her with great shock. ‘What?! I don’t want mom to die! She’s our mom! I want her to live forever! I want her to be on my wedding and to watch my children grow up!’ Madelyn sighed. ‘Just because I said what I said doesn’t mean that’s what I want to happen. I just tend to be a little more realistic about the whole situation than anyone else. The last thing I want is for mom to die, but anyone can see those wrinkles and the grey hair and have you noticed her loss of memory lately? I’m just preparing myself for the future.’ They finished their homework, but stayed in the dining hall where it was peaceful compared to the kitchen which they couldn’t avoid if they wanted to go somewhere else. ‘So you don’t plan to follow mom’s plan and marry who she wants you to marry?’ Vincent asked his sister. He admired her, she seemed pretty intelligent even though her intelligence could make her seem a little cold towards stuff like their parents dying. ‘I don’t know. It depends, really. I don’t plan to choose my partner in life based on their last name though. But when I look at Celeste and Herbert, I think they genuinely like each other. If the person I end up liking happens to be an Ivanov, I’m not going to avoid it for the sake of rebelling against mom.’

The both of them were so busy with their conversation and their visions of what the future would behold that they didn’t notice at all that there was in fact an Ivanov sitting at the dining table. Isaac Ivanov-Broke had planned to make his homework as well, but he ended up being distracted by their conversation. He listened to it in silence and let out a hopeless sigh. He really hoped Annabelle’s vision was the same as Madelyns, because he had a mad crush on that girl!

Classical Music Suites Bracket

Hi everyone! After the success that the symphony bracket has been so far I thought I'd keep the fun going by hosting the suites bracket that was initially discussed on that blog. The format will remain quite similar, but I'll clarify this when the tournament starts which will likely be sometime in December. There is only the one mod, so please be patient with me (oh also she/they pronouns please).

I'm accepting submissions, so here's some guidelines for that:

Please make submissions to the ask box.

You can include propaganda if you would like to but you don't have to.

If there is a specific recording that you would like me to use please specify it in your submission.

For the purposes of this bracket suite is fairly broad, though it will be restricted to suites with at least 2 movements. Please don't submit works that are other forms (eg. symphony, concerto, opera etc). If the mod determines that a submission is not clearly a suite then a poll will be created to determine general consensus.

The number of suites to make it into the bracket is yet to be determined, but it will be either 16, 32, or 64, depending on the number of submissions.

As submissions come in, I will add them to the bottom of this post every so often.

Also as an extra little novelty, feel free to guess the suite, movement, and instrument of the sheet music in the header image :)
