Please Please Please

“Hey…there’s my girl!” Billy exclaims as he walks out of the county jail’s gates.

You smile and give him a big hug. This had been the longest that Billy had been in jail, a little over a month for resisting arrest after being pulled over for drunk driving.

This…behavior of his had been going on for a while though.

Arrested for drunk driving, public indecency, and a plethora of other things.

It has gotten so bad that your own PR team has been asking- BEGGING you to dump Billy.

“What does it tell people when they see you around him? You’re supposed to be America’s Sweetheart! You shouldn’t be in a relationship with somebody that has been arrested for things like drinking and drug possession!”

“Please- just, calm down, he’s not…all that bad.”

“Really? Not that bad?” your manager scoffs, tossing you a magazine, the front cover being Billy getting arrested…once again. You sigh, “Okay…okay he has his flaws, but so does everyone!”

Your manager pinches the bridge of his nose and sighs. “Sweetheart, if you don’t break up with him, think of how it could hurt your image.” “I don’t care if it hurts my image! I love him!”

Your manager groans. “You might say you don’t care, but I know deep down you do. And since I know you do, and since you don’t want to break up with him, figure something out, because if this keeps up, I’ll make sure that you’ll be so busy that you won’t even have time to spend with him!”

That’s how your new song came about…a new song that has absolutely exploded in the month that it has been out for.

A new song that’s about Billy that you just so happened to leave out of every conversation during your visits.

“So…how’s my girl been? Lonely without me right?” Billy says, kissing your forehead. You chuckle and nod while taking his hand to lead him to the car.

He tosses his things into the backseat and opens the passenger door for you, “I got you babydoll”

That’s what you love about him, he’s so considerate and caring towards you. Nobody really seemed to understand that. But because of that…the guilt of writing that song was worse.

It’s not like the song was insulting him…right?

He buckles his seatbelt and starts up the car…and then turns on the radio.

“And up next, everyone’s favorite sweetheart Y/N! with her new hit single ‘Please, Please, Please!’”

‘Oh shit’ you think as the instrumentals start playing.

Billy looks over at you with a smile,

“You didn’t tell me you released a new song”. You sheepishly return his smile, “Uh…yea it’s a…surprise”

The lyrics come in and Billy just bops his head to the beat…

“It’s got a good beat” he says happily.

“Please, please, please don't prove ‘em right…And please, please, please, Don't bring me to tears when I just did my makeup so nice”

Slowly…Billy goes quiet.

“Heartbreak is one thing, my ego's another. I beg you, don't embarrass me, motherfucker. Please, please, please”

You can practically see the cogs turning in his head. But he doesn’t say anything.

“If you wanna go and be stupid, don't do it in front of me, If you don't wanna cry to my music, don't make me hate you prolifically, Please, please, please…”

The song ends and Billy shuts off the radio, the drive home is then spent in silence.

You both arrive at the house, Billy still hasn’t said a word.

Once inside, he plops down his bag in the living room and then turns to you.

“So…that song.”

You swallow nervously, how do you explain this to him?

“You got something to tell me?”

You sigh, “Billy- I-“

“Y’know, I know I’m not a saint, but seriously?” he says, raising his voice slightly.

“Billy please! It’s- It’s really not as deep as you think it is!”

“Really? Cause you writing and singing a whole song about me not embarrassing you isn’t that deep?”

“It’s not! Just- Just listen to me!”

Billy sighs and motions for you to start talking.

“My- My PR team just- they really don’t like the idea of us Billy and-“

He scoffs, “Great, now you’re just making excuses”

“I’m not! They don’t like the idea of us and wanted me to break up with you!”

Billy looks at you with a surprised look, he knew your team didn’t like him, but he didn’t think that they didn’t like him so much to make you break up with him.

“They wanted me to break up with you, and- and it was either that or I had to figure out a new solution!”

“Are you serious?..”

You nod, “Yes, Billy- I didn’t mean for the song to hurt you…I just- I didn’t want to break up with you. You’re too important to me.”

Billy suddenly wraps his arms around you and places a kiss on your head.

“You’re important to me too babydoll…I’m sorry for getting so pissed off about a stupid song….but I promise, I’ll try to be better…"

"Besides...the song is way to good for me to hate it"

You smile, hug him back and then look up him.

"So...since you're cool with the song now...Do you maybe wanna be in the music video for it?"

Billy laughs and kisses your lips.

"Of course I will babydoll"

You wish that this could be the Billy that everyone sees, instead of the drug and alcohol addicted one that always ends up proving everyone right about how he really is.

Standing on the rooftop of this bar in Madrid, your short hair blew in the cold air. Apparently it’s not just any bar, the bar is placed on a fire tower.

The sun was just about to set and you tried to keep your hair under control. „You know, I liked it more when it was long.“ Carlos looked at you with his big brown round eyes and it reminded you of a deer caught in a headlight.

„Oh really?“, you grinned. When you two first met you were only 12 years old, little best friend of Isa. You never taught you would one day stay on this roof top with her brother.

„Yeah, do you remember drinking in the parking lot? By the trail head? Yeah, I liked your hair that day.“

You felt heat rush to your head, you blamed it on the cold. „Okay, I can grow it out long, if you’d like that?“

You only just moved back to Madrid. Ida was supposed to pick you up from the airport but instead there stood a bright red Ferrari with not Isa but her brother Carlos instead. And he didn’t take you to his sisters, no he treated you to a drink on the fire tower.

Only the good die young was playing on the speakers.

„You know, I never understood what Billy Joel meant with those lyrics“, you thought out loud. „Didn’t you just study english literature?“ - „Yeah, and?“ Your eyebrows raised at him, silently questioning his thoughts.

„Like, aren’t you just supposed to know what he meant with his lyrics?“

„I mean, I have my own meaning, but it’s ridiculous.“ - „No, please tell me, because I always laugh at the lyrics“, Carlos said.

„I mean, obviously in the first verse he wants to have sex with virgin catholic girls. And ‚only the good die young‘ you can argue about that - young people who die didn’t deserve it, therefore they were good. Or old people aren’t good anymore, or many more.“

„Not ridiculous“, he smiled. „Huh?“ - „Your meaning of the song isn’t ridiculous, not in the slightest.“

You smiled, hard. Carlos was an interesting man and you wondered what more grew under that perfect skin of his.

„I think we are going to be good friends, Carlos“, you told him. „You think so?“, was his answer. You nodded and grinned at him.

Over the time you grew closer together, Carlos showed you parts of Madrid you only remembered vaguely from your childhood. But the distance of his job hurt more and more. You knew what a relationship with him meant. You knew only too good, heard Isa over the phone crying over missing her brother.

But the days he spent in between were the best you ever experienced.

„I want a big house out in the open. Where the sun always shines and all the light gets into the house!“, Carlos gushed. You were laying on the couch together and planned how your future would look like if money didn’t matter - not that it did anyway.

„Whys that?“, you asked him. „I don’t like the way my skin feels when it’s not shown on by the sun. I like the warmth, never liked the cold, brrr“, his arms snaked around your upper body and shook it like you were freezing.

Your laugh was heard throughout the apartment. Carlos grinned at you, his skin warming with the sound of your happiness.

„Why don’t you like the way your skin feels without the sun?“

„It makes me feel like I need to escape my own body. Like I don’t belong, it just feels wrong.“

„Well I hope you can escape your skin with me“, you smiled at the man you were falling more and more in love with.

But you still never went to a grand prix with him. And when he asked you why, you came up with a new excuse as not to.

You started to pick up more work, started to work over the weekends. You had less and less time to call Carlos over the weekend, making him question your feelings for him.

Until it happened. It happened on a Saturday at FP2. It was quickly over. You only heard about the incident the next day, as you wondered why Carlos didn’t start.

Isa called you. 48 seconds. That’s how long the phone call lasted. The news shattered your heart. Broken into millions of pieces. You couldn’t believe it, no, Isa was definitely playing pranks with you.

You fell, you fell deep into a hole. A hole you never knew you sighed it yourself. Deeper and deeper. Until Isa visited you. She brought you his clothes he still had at home. She brought his necklace that he was about to gift you. His initials graved into the back of the pendant.

But still, everyone who started talking about him being gone, you shut out. You shut them right out, because in your mind he was still alive, he was still racking and he was winning.

But the reality was none of that. And reality hit you, it hit you hard. His memorial was held at the end of the season. And Isa asked you to talk about him. You had to admit he was dead.

„I can’t do it, Isa.“ - „Please, you were his everything, he talked so much about you! Did you know he had been crushing on you since he was 16?“

„Did you set us up? The day you didn’t pick me up from the airport and instead sent him?“

Isa looked at you, just like Carlos had when he was caught doing something he shouldn’t have. This big brown eyes. Glistening with mischief - it was something that all of the Sainz family possessed.

„You caught me“, she shamelessly shrugged with her shoulders and smirked at you. „It was time? He was pining on you for so long, but you were away studying and he was so sad, I had to do it, it was his only chance!“

His memorial was beautiful, the whole grid present. Charles and Frédéric spoke about his time at Ferrari, Lando held a speech about their friendship and Isa sung a beautiful song. She still tried to convince you to speak, but you just couldn’t.

Isa and you still regularly talked to each other. She was doing good, better than her anyway. You almost never talked about Carlos. You weren’t bringing him up, neither did she.

The one thing Isa told you was: „Grief is just love letting go. It’s okay to let go.“

You almost cried - how could she say that like it was just spilled milk?

„Look at yourself, when’s the last time you cut your hair? You always kept it short, but now?“

You did visit him at his grave. Brought flowers and letters for him to read. Eventually you wrote a song. A song to remember him - Carlos‘ Song.

And one day you stood on a stage, at the bar they had their first date at and sung Carlos‘ Song.

Isa was there, smiling up at you and filming the whole thing. „I’m going to show it to my parents“, she smiled.

And you knew Carlos was smiling down on you and kept you alive.

TWISTED CHARACTERS AND THE MUSIC I THINK THEY'D LIKE! (heartslabyul ver.)

ACE TRAPPOLA

I don't think Ace would be a musichead at all (you know, the type of people who lock in when their favorite artists are about to drop an album and stream that shit the day it drops) but I def see him as the type to primarily consume pop, rap, trap, that typa stuff. He strikes me as the kind of guy who likes artists like Drake (pre Kendrick beef LMFAO), Eminem, Post Malone, Carti (though he sucksss), etc. just very consumable hip-hop artists everyone knows. Because he isn't that much of a musichead, he's one of those people who are quick to make assumptions about genres and not try to listen to things outside of their comfort zone. You know, the type of guy that would call Billie Eilish and Melanie Martinez goth/emo. very close minded unfortunately but thats okay we still love him

DEUCE SPADE

Deuce in my opinion would be more musically open minded than Ace, but like by 15%. He's not a stan or anything. Being an honor student doesn't just mean locking in for assignments, but it also means giving everything a shot and not knocking something before you try it. I think he'd have a similar music taste to Ace though. He'd fuck with Post Malone too, but his Spotify wrapped includes artists like SZA, Frank Ocean, Pinkpantheress, etc. Mainly the alternative RNB artists. I also don't have any reason to back this up but I feel like he'd have an embarrassingly soft spot for boy bands, it don't matter where they come from. America, The UK... South Korea.. LMAO IDK I just think he'd fw One Direction, BTS, NSYNC, etc.

CATER DIAMOND

I don't know if this is very well known in the fandom at all, maybe it is, I haven't been on twst tumblr for long, but Cater canonly skateboards. And because of that, I always kind of believed Cater was the type of guy to like pop-punk, nu-metal, just a lot of rock essentially. Unrelated but I also think he'd have the most expressive room (aside from Rook and his Neige/Vil shrine of a room) with like band posters everywhere and gaming console shit YK!! He'd be into pop-punk bands like Sum-41, Blink-182, Good Charlotte, early Fall Out Boy, and some early classics like Ramones. And for nu-metal Korn and Linkin Park. just some shit to feel cool listening to while you're doing triple double backflips on the board or whatever skateboarders be doing LMAO?? I'm more of a rollerskater girl myself.

RIDDLE ROSEHEARTS

a lot of what I see about Riddle on this app are "you know, his mom sheltered him from the outside world and prolly forced him to listen to a lot of classical music so thats what he only consumes!" and to some extent, i agree. the mf would probably play Mozart and Beethoven while he vacuums the dorms common room idk. But I also feel like.. He's been away from his mother long enough and is old enough to take that pole out of his ass and see what the rest of the outside world is doing. you can't tell me once he discovers what youtube/spotify/apple music is he WOULDN'T enjoy alt pop and psychedelic rock. lord help the heartslabyul dorm the only thing they would know for the next 5 months are laufey, arctic monkeys (AM era), and lana del rey (ultraviolence era) + The Beatles, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, The Kinks, etc. he just strikes me as a lover of them slow jams.

honestly, trey wouldn't be that much of a music listener. he'd have some playing in the background while he's baking ofc, but having headphones in while studying or walking to class? Good bye contractual-ization! loljk Just left my 2019-mid 2023 (4.5-year time span) part-time/RA/GA/full-time jobs in UP or academe sector. I was initially feeling really emotional (just don't let my colleagues see it) because I really treasure my experiences there, and the people I met there. Nalulungkot nga ako na di ko sila nabilhan ng gift at di rin ako nakapagpapicture tas nakapag-official byebye na ako sa office. <insert supposed last day picture ko sana sa work ko> Throwback time. Late 2018. I got an email from my adviser if I have some spare time to do some freelancing research job while reviewing for boards. Of course I said yes. As if naman nag-aaral talaga ako sa boards lol. Then there I met Ate Janel (officially i guess. met her already in Solar during undergrad pero quick hellos lang), Kuya Leo, Kuya Billy, Carlo, Ate Jade. Naging 2 separate research jobs pa 'to because another company was interested on a different electric vehicle segment. Notable person in this job: Ate Janel! Really fascinated sa pagiging organized ni Ate Janel. One of the people na I look up to when it comes to being "manager" and "leader". She has great people and communication skills. Also yung work experience ko dito with Ate Janel, I consider it as my keystone job experience sa professional/personal life ko haha. I significantly improved my "stranger" communication skills here; doing cold emails, calls, and meetings. Really appreciate yung one-time casual comment from her na nagimprove yung "introvertness" ko during this time. Ni di ko nga alam kung nag-thank you ako pero up to this time naalala ko pa haha. Sweetest person ever too! Always check my welfare nung namatay si Papa, nung nagkacovid ako mag-isa, nung may sunog sa knl. SUPER LOVE HER. DESERVE ALL THE BEST IN THE WORLD. Then, comes 2019. I was working as graduate assistant for Intelect x CHRG project. Worked with Kuya Billy, Juls, at Aaron for the tech of the charging station. Very rewarding yung naging dev ko dito kasi ang multi-function yung last board ko hehe. Even now kaya ko iutilize yung old board ko to do simple relay switching.

Notable person of the job: Kuya Billy! He was also nice to work with, and genuinely funny person rin. Galing ng labview skills! Didn't know I can do "logging" from my UART comm lines to save csv in a laptop during battery characterization. Very very helpful rin kapag may times na nabobo na ako kasi di ko alam solution sa noisy signals ko. He's the type of person na gusto ko maging technical lead/manager kasi you'll feel na yung output mo ay important at impactful; and very hands-on sya sa technical dev.

Fast forward 2021, I was hired as full-time researcher for a project building a novel motor. Hooray! First full-time job ko 'to. Honestly, I don't know kung anong specific job description ko rito, I was expecting to code and do embedded pero di natuloy. I was just trying my best to assist in whatever output is needed or if assistance is needed. Halfway the project rin kasi ako umalis. Overall feeling ko in this work experience was mostly guilt.. Felt really guilty leaving Kuya Soren alone sa project kahit verbally na nya inexpress na mahirap kapag umalis ako kasi testing na sa next phase huhuhu. Sorry po. Notable person of the job: Kuya Soren syempre! Ang talino and creative nya. Very expressive rin sya kapag nageexplain/nagsusulat. Which actually I liked kasi sa mga narrative reports, naiintindihan ko yung thought process nya sa research/design/tests, nagfefeeling matalino rin tuloy ako haha. Kidding aside, grabe hands down po, one man team talaga! Top notch yung technical at engineering skills! Learned so much about mechanical design, motor control, and academic paper writing working under SRM. There were moments na sinasabi ng peers ko na it's time to go outside UP projects na kasi wala raw mentorship dito. Pero pinaglalaban kong mentor ko sila Kuya Soren at Sir Lew kasi dami ko naman natutunan under SRM. Which actually with the benefit of hindsight, I took for granted. Hays. Sana nagawa/ginagawa ko na thesis ko eh! Year 2022-2023. Been involved with various part-time research consultancy projects and e-trike E&E design. Honestly, this 1.5 year experience was actually the moment in my life that I felt so underachieved. Haven't moved on with any progress on my thesis. Haven't even got my component deployed on the e-trike testing. I know I'm trying so hard to make sense of my debugging and be as attentive as I can be on other tasks for the projects. But I felt most of the time, I'm talking to myself. I was supposed to be the "expert." But I know I'm not. There were moments I'm thinking maybe I'm just getting more dumb as day the goes by. Or most likely, I just didn't ask for the support I needed. All I know is that I hate working on this specific SDK from TI that I can't reconfigure arghhh HAHAHA daming bugs magalaw mo lang ng onti. Maybe naging successful pa ako kung sinulat ko lahat from scratch. Mygad. Notable person of the job: Kuya Leo, of course! Friendly to everyone tapos mahilig sa chismis lol. Isa sa mga gusto kong skills na maadapt from Kuya Leo ay yung presentation skills nya. Very knowledgeable and confident kasi yung aura nya haha. Alsooo, naalala ko from the very first day of my onboarding sa NICER, everything I needed was procured. Kahit dami kong problema (technically speaking), he's always reminding me don't be pressured and may workaround sya so I can take my time. Nasobrahan na ata sa leniency though huhu. Feel ko talaga baby na baby ako sa team kahit as a senior srs haha. And then that day came, I was told that the next round of the funding will not be pushed through, and we'll have to look for other opportunities with 3 working days before the end of the month (!!). I just repeat this thought in my head: "Syempre after all my internal drama, it's just business. Walang funding. Walang income, syempre. I should not take things personally, all is just business. " Ahhhh I know I am ending this at a sad note. But I am really sad hahahuhu. I felt so underachieved and I don't like the feeling of it. I can wait for the next round of funding/projects and continue with my R&D life (and lecturer/teaching too).. but I strongly crave some control in my life and di rin naman ako mayaman. Iniisip ko kung waiting for the next funding lang ba talaga kaya ko gawin. Di ko ba kaya solusyunan yung current problem ko which was: wala akong kontrata at this moment?

So I tried applying in industry and selling my skill set out there. I sent multiple applications for embedded/firmware engineer na may hybrid / WFH set-up (oo choosy ako hahahaha) I got an offer that met my expected salary. Full WFH set-up. With trainings pa. Ang chill pa ng mga technical interviewers/future teammates ko. My immediate supervisor was even yung delivery manager na ng division. Sa utak ko, hulog nang langit na yung opportunity. The only reason why I will decline this is kung SUPER LOVE KO MAGSTAY SA UP. But not really. Gusto ko lang iend yung MS ko kaya ako nagsstay. That's it. So I accepted the industry job offer. 3 days nalang before my starting date. Yayyy. THE END.
