Humanity thought themselves ready as they aimed their ships to the stars.

FTL tech had been successfully tested and perfected in the Solar System. By precisely targeting minute, picosecond-long rifts in the Einstienian space-time fabric, a machine the size of a dishwasher could tear open a wormhole to practically anywhere in the universe. The amount of energy required to do this was solved with the black hole reactor, capturing the Hawking radiation from a miniature singularity to produce thrust at sublight speeds.

Spearheading the expedition into the unknown would be the HSS Britannic, second of the Titanic-class battlecruisers. Mounting the same several hundred kinetic railguns, dozens of missile launchers, and several spacecraft hangars in its flying wing design, the main difference was the spinally mounted radiation cannon that drew power directly from the engine before blasting out a superconcentrated beam of devastation.

Even this wasn't prepared enough, as though humanity thought themselves godless, the rest of the universe might not. And so they created their own.

The near century-long Project Rain culminated in 115-Hotel, codenamed Harvester. An advanced electronic warfare suite was mounted in the head. A black hole reactor took up space in the chest, and a nanomachine replicator was installed in the lower torso. Machine guns, autocannons, flamethrowers, gas projectors, rocket pods, and zero-G micro thrusters completed Harvester’s arsenal. It took the better part of fifteen years to create a suitable AI for the body. Where there should’ve been a human face was instead affixed a gas mask - a symbol of humanity’s unconscious desire for war.

Humanity thought themselves prepared for the threats of the universe, and they were. Even today, their military, in nearly all aspects, remains unmatched.

But they were not ready for the dying universe itself.

The longer humanity watched, the more it seemed the universe was doomed. Galactic wars claimed trillions. Refugee crises were the norm. Diseases ravaged entire star systems. The “Union of Species” did little except twiddle thumb equivalents and airily comment on what they were having for dinner.

Humanity was stumped. What now? Clearly, the Solar System was a much more sustainable system than what the rest of the universe had going on. Expecting resistance and getting encouragement to end it already didn’t help the thought process. And yet, did humanity, seemingly the only thriving sapient race, have a responsibility to the rest of the universe?

All fell silent when Harvester raised a single hand and spoke in a mechanical, monotone, electronic, soulless - human - voice.

“Strip the Britannic of its weapons. Fill the ship with beds, food, water, and medicine. Paint it white with a red cross underneath. The universe is a garden. I will not let it die.”

The HSS Britannic roared across the stars, now powered by chemical engines, its black hole reactor instead dedicated entirely to the most powerful energy shield ever built to this day. And, like its namesake five centuries ago, the only weapon it carried was safety from the sea of death around it.

White wings descended upon war-torn Imsolot, establishing the first ever Red Cross station outside of Earth. The hospital did not discriminate between nationalities, combatants or civilians, friends or foes. All wounded, sick, and maimed were welcomed underneath the shielding wings of the angels. Within negotiations had been made, and a war previously thought to never be over had ended.

The Britannic then breached the orange skies of Y'Oaemlr, decimated by a bacterial pandemic, and airdropped mobile hospitals all over the planet. In about half of a human solar cycle, the disease had been completely eradicated.

A ferocious battle between the warring Ereretaq and Cunowios left dozens of ships stranded dead in space until a white-and-red ghost appeared from the abyss. The Britannic's chemical engines lit up the eternal night as she towed the disabled ships away from the combat zone to the orbit of a nearby moon, providing emergency medical aid to all injured regardless of affiliation.

In time, the three Titanic-class battlecruisers would become legendary in their own rights. The lead ship HSS Titanic, often shortened to Titan by her crew and enemies, which was said to be nigh unkillable. The last ship, the HSS Olympic, the Silver Ghost, whose reflective stealth drive made entire galaxies her hunting ground. But the most famous of them all, well-known even to the outer edges of humanity's influence, considered mythical in all places where she had never appeared, was the HSHS Britannic. With her stark white paint, giant red crosses on the top and bottom, and - curiously - avian feathers emblazoned on the outer wings, all fell quiet when the Gardener thundered overhead, her roar a sharp contrast from her near-silent sisters.

And, unlike the Titanic and the Olympic, where her sisters left only devastation in their wakes, wherever the Gardener descended, life blossomed like never before.

Myths said that the gods, in a last-ditch attempt to save the universe, had sacrificed all their powers to create a singular, mechanical savior. But the truth was far worse.

Myths said that whenever all seemed lost, the very sky would split open as a bloodied dove screamed its pain to the stars, a sound that would stop even the vilest of warmongers. But the truth was far worse.

Myths said that three triplet gods of vengeance roamed the edges of the universe. A judge and a jury - but no executioner, only a healer, to mend all that was broken, rather than repeating the cycle forever. But the truth was far worse.

Myths spoke of pure-winged angels. The truth was far worse.

The truth was that there was only a single living soul crewing the HSS Britannic at all times.

The truth was that Harvester was not a human-created AI. Far from it. 115-Hotel’s mechanical body was controlled by the uploaded consciousness of a seventeen-year-old child soldier. A girl who had grown up far too fast and had to learn how to be human again. Given steel wings to find her salvation among the stars.

The truth was that the Gardener was only a reaper whose wings had a chance to be bright once more.

Humanity has finally reached the stars and found out why no one had contacted us. The universe is in a sad state. As such, Doctors without Borders, Red Cross, and many othe charities go intergalactic.

You’ll never forget the day it was announced that the war had ended. The air was cold, and your dress was entirely too short. You had been practically abandoned by your friends, who had convinced you to come out for a couple drinks. Admittedly, you felt foolish for thinking that they would’ve stuck around once they finally talked you out of your house. You had been so busy studying lately that you never got time to have any fun, and though they should’ve been having fun with you, they chose the company of a few clone troopers instead.

“Hey,” Came a voice from behind you. You turned, and came face to… chest, with the largest clone you’d ever met. “You look a little lost.” He commented with a kind smile. Only one of his eyes had an iris, and you found that it sparkled so radiantly that you couldn’t look away.

“Yeah, my friends sort of ditched me.” You said sheepishly.

“That’s not very nice of them,” He commented. “Want to grab a drink with me?”

“I—” You usually would say no, but you figured- fuck it, why not? He was cute, and seemed nice. What’s one drink? “Yeah, actually- I’d love that.” The two of you make your way to the bar, where you both sit and he orders you a drink.

“What’s in this?” You ask, sniffing the brightly colored beverage.

“It’s a surprise!” He laughed. “It’s nothing too heavy, trust me.”

“No offense, but I think we have drastically different perspectives on what is or isn’t a heavy drink.” You joke, and Wrecker belts out a laugh, just happy that you’re finally starting to relax. He couldn’t get over the way you looked- he wanted to take you back to meet his brothers, but he knew that it was way too soon for that sort of thing. He wanted to ask you to be his girlfriend on the spot, but again, he knew better. You try a sip of your drink, and you hum in appreciation for the sweet flavor of the beverage. It hardly tastes like alcohol at all.

“This is really good,” You comment.

“I told you!” He cheers, taking a swig of his own drink. “So, what happened with your friends?” He asks. You were sort of surprised that he remembered you even mentioned them. You had almost forgotten that you had mentioned them.

“Oh, they do this every time they get me out of the house,” You say with a sigh. “I don’t get it. They always want me to come out, but they never want to stick around me.”

“That doesn’t make any sense,” He answers. “Who wouldn’t want to hang out with you?” He asks earnestly, and you can’t help but blush.

“You hardly know me.” You say with a lighthearted roll of your eyes.

“Well, I like what I know about you so far.” He smiles, and you can’t help but return it. “And I think you’re beautiful, so I don’t see who wouldn’t want to be around you.”

The bar was quiet tonight, unlike the night you first met. But that was okay. It meant for more privacy, which meant Hunter could actually breathe. He was the only one who knew what was going to be happening tonight, and he found that he could hardly stop smiling. He was just so excited and proud of his little brother. The first of them to get married was a big achievement, one that Crosshair would never be able to hold over his head. When you caught on to all of his smiling, Hunter just brushed it off by saying he was just happy that the war had finally ended. You had bought it.

“Hey,” Wrecker nudged you, you had him trapped in the booth. “Can I get out?”

“Yeah, ‘course.” You said, standing up. He did the same, only before you had the chance to sit back down, he dropped to one knee and pulled out the ring he had been holding onto for months now. He knew he wanted to propose to you for ages now, but he always just felt he had to wait for the right time. And, well, this felt like the right time.

“Y/N,” He starts, clearing his throat. Tech starts recording without your knowledge. “I’ve known you were meant to be mine from the first moment I saw you here, years ago.” He says. “I knew from the first time I looked into your eyes that you were the only one for me. You’re my soulmate, Y/N.” He’s tearing up, which is making both you and Hunter tear up as well. You had your hand over your mouth in shock. “Will you please make me the happiest man alive and please be my wife?”

“Yes!” You yelled, gaining the attention of every clone in the bar. “Yes, Wrecker- yes!” You’re crying now, and everyone in the bar cheers. Wrecker stands, and places the ring on your finger. In the dream, they were back on the battlefield, and it’s during a battle that doesn’t go to plan. It starts off fine, though it doesn’t stay fine for very long. Droids get airdropped in from every direction – faster than they can take them out – and they’re overwhelmed before they even know what’s going on. Tech gets captured, and by the time they all find him, he’s badly injured and barely alive. But, in the nightmare, Tech doesn’t make it, and Wrecker’s the one to find him. He blames himself.

“Do you want to call him?” You ask. “He might like to hear from you.”

“I… Yeah.” He says with a shaky sigh. You comm Tech, who’s still awake, and he and Wrecker talk for the better part of two hours while you cuddle up with Wrecker. You gently caress him and place gentle, soft kisses anywhere that you can reach. By the time he hangs up, you can tell Wrecker is feeling better.

“I wish there was more I do to help you, my love.” You say, kissing his cheek.

“You’re here for me,” He says. “That’s all I need from you.”

“Yeah, but…”

“I know.” He smiles softly. You kiss his lips now that he is no longer on the line with Tech, and he kisses back eagerly, passionately, trying to show you just how “okay” it was that you did everything you could to help him when he needed it. To show you how much he appreciates you taking care of him.

“I love you,” He sighs against your lips.

“Morning, gorgeous.” He smiles at you. He barely even squints at the morning sun, and you’re reminded once more than being as large as he is must have it’s advantages.

“Morning, handsome.” You smile back, sipping your mug of caff. He walks over and places a soft kiss to your lips, humming at the taste of caff. “Want a cup?”

“I’d love some.” He smiles. You fix him a cup of caff, and you both sit and watch the morning news.

“it’s the new year’s eve y/n! you didn’t come here to be a bookworm!” siyeon pushed you that your body was inclined towards her. it was an annual tradition where your squad would go to the young adult party at the ski resort. since siyeon was a member, bringing in two more people would have a discount during the stay.

walking up the hill, your steps made the snow crunching rich with your calf-high boots. siyeon and heejin shared a look at you, and wondered that even with your goggles, nothing would ever stop you from reading. they guided you by pulling on your jacket sleeve, directing and redirecting the way to avoid obstruction.

mark’s ears perked up at his friend. “yeah it’s like one of those rom-com movies.”

“high school musical? nah, this is way better.” johnny held a tray of tarts and cupcakes.

Dana Lewis - Host: (00:30) Hi everyone. And welcome to another edition of backstory. I'm Dana Lewis in this edition, a digital revolution driven in part by COVID-19, but there are many other factors digital because it's not a coin or a bill that you carry in your wallet or your purse, but an electronic holding, maybe on your phone or your computer, you already may use payment applications for some of your shopping and bill pay. But at lightning speed governments are adopting electronic currencies. They can track and control and off the government grid. Cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin are soaring in value on this backstory. Can you trust it? Will you use it? I have no doubt. And we talked to digital currency experts about the future and the China analyst, because China is rolling out digital currency. As we speak in wild, they say it's to get away from the U S dollar. It's probably more about tracking every aspect of how its citizens behave in the new digital marketplace of the world. All right. In London now nickel digital asset management, uh, builds itself as Europe's leading digital asset management company. And I'm joined by Anatoly Crachilov and Michael Hall. I Hi guys, good morning. How are you? Good, good to be here. Bloomberg recently wrote we're living through a monetary revolution. So multifaceted that few people comprehend the full extent that the technical technological transformation of the internet is driving the revolution. The pandemic of 2020 has accelerated it. What do they mean, Michael? Do you want to take a shot at it? Michael Hall/ Nickel Digital: (02:17) Well, I think we're seeing a new form of money. If you look at the evolution of money, we started off bartering, sheep and cows. We moved to coins and or seashells maybe before that coin, some, we used to move to paper, money, and paper money was tied to gold. And then it was that link was cut. And when paper, money departed from the gold standard, it became fit money that central banks could conjure up with, uh, you know, turning the printing process a bit faster, or now they just put more zeros in a digital bank account. And as a reaction to that, we've seen digital currency starts off with the com with limited supply. So that I think what's really, what's really interesting. COVID has kind of forced people away from physical cash into using contactless cash. And the next evolution of that is using a blockchain based cash Dana Lewis - Host: (03:10) And Anatoly why is it, uh, completely taken off Bitcoin, you know, has risen. I don't know what it is today. You can give me the price today, but I mean, it's, it's essentially gone up like 139% year to date. Anatoly Crachilov/Nickel Digital: (03:21) That's correct. Yes. It's uh, 18, 18,000 plus essentially I would say 2020, the year of COVID to the grid, the entire kind of important evolution in digital currencies specifically, there was a sequence of events, uh, COVID triggers, mass unemployment, mass unemployment triggers a response by central bank, which can be summarized by flood market with money. And that's exactly what central bank did. Dana Lewis - Host: (03:50) Everybody's printing money, every nation that's trying to get itself out of it. The financial disaster they're in are, are printing money, correct? Anatoly Crachilov/Nickel Digital: (03:58) You have roughly $11 trillion printed over the last 10 months by a major economists around the world. And certainly if you look at that at the very least, you, by the way, you appreciate why central banks do that. But as holder of capital, you have to preserve this capital, right? And your concern is how to avoid inflation, which started to loom at some stage and currency debasement, which inevitably will hit. And we all know that every single FIAR project in the world being a kind of paper money, right, ultimately ends at zero. So kind of intrinsic value is zero. This paper and given the central bank so easily can inflate this people, investors are looking for hard assets and your classical heart assets would be real estate gold, will these kind of overcrowded traits. And then suddenly you come with Bitcoin as a new form of hard asset. And specifically within BTC, you have a scarcity element similar to gold. There is a certain number of coins ever to be printed. And the schedule, the issue and schedule is very precise. I can tell you exactly how many say Bitcoin's going to be there in the system in say March, uh, 2042. Can you tell me how many us dollars would have been circulated? Of course not because there is no, Dana Lewis - Host: (05:29) Probably probably a lot more than there are now because they're just going to keep printing them. Anatoly Crachilov/Nickel Digital: (05:32) So you can say directionality is clear. They're going to be more dollars around with BTC. You have this scarcity element and that would drive the price up. And essentially we've seen this unfolding demand, which to some extent was triggered by forward-looking investors, such as Paul Tudor Jones letter, uh, bill Miller and all of them. They look for a new to protect capital. Bitcoin became one of the doors, Dana Lewis - Host: (06:00) Michael, the, uh, if I can get Michael to jump in here. So, you know, Nouriel, Roubini, Roubini, uh, the New York university economist wrote in, um, 2018. He told CNBC it's the biggest bubble in human history talking about Bitcoin. Uh, and that the price would crush to zero. Then eight months later in congressional testimony, he said, Bitcoin's the mother of all scams. It's a quote shitcoin unquote, uh, and then fast forward to 2020. And now he has changed his story. Uh, and he's talking about while, you know, it's, it's not going to be easily DC-based, uh, and that there there's value there. So I would say that's a pretty big step back, but, but just not Roubini, but mainstream finance, mainstream banks, that would kind of turn their nose up a digital currency. Now, I guess just mainly because of demand also their customers want to want to invest in it. Michael Hall/ Nickel Digital: (07:00) Yes. I mean, banks are customer led and they follow the money. And if people want to invest in a product, they will meet that demand. Dana Lewis - Host: (07:08) And is that product now more credible than it was even a year ago? And why do you think? So? Michael Hall/ Nickel Digital: (07:14) I think it's attracting more institutional interest of the names. People mentioned. They were the original, you know, the, the, the leaders, uh, the Pathfinders in the hedge fund industry. And they started hedge funds. People like Paul Tudor Jones and Stanley Druckenmiller when hedge funds weren't institutional businesses and a pension fund would never, they was pension funds were still in stocks and bonds fast forward, 30 years, pension funds and insurance companies invest in hedge funds that, which they didn't do 30 years ago. So these people are innovative. These people are leaders, they're innovators, and they are investing in Bitcoin now. And in 30 years time, maybe sooner pension funds and insurance companies will be investing in Bitcoin as well. Dana Lewis - Host: (07:59) Electronic payment platforms, I'm stunned. I mean, you guys know these numbers quite well, but, uh, you know, $40 trillion in transactions through Ali pay and we chat pay, we're talking about China now, uh, which is leading in terms of the development of digital currency so far. Um, so the, the amount of transactions are huge. Do you see a difference between the boom in Bitcoin and, and digital currency and these currencies now that governments are talking about bringing in and they've done so on an experimental basis in China? Anatoly Crachilov/Nickel Digital: (08:36) Yep. Well, uh, you're absolutely right. There is the whole evolution of central bank digital currency. So-called, uh, to some extent it was triggered by a 2020. And if you look in the us, the whole model of, uh, distributing certain, uh, financial aid to ultimate population, right, goes through commercial banks. And it's not necessarily the most efficient way because in the U S only 29% of these financial aid ended up in consumption and other four to five and the top in saving and in our 40 to five and up in repaying, various form of debt, like credit card debts, and so on. So from the point of view of stimulating the economy, it wasn't really that efficient only 29% when consumption now in China or to the, to the, to in contrast, there has been an experiment which was run earlier this year. And the idea was a certain number of people were given, uh, what's called airdrop. Anatoly Crachilov/Nickel Digital: (09:41) When you got certain amount of cash, say a thousand dollars on your equivalent of $30, each person, whatever is the amount, the idea was kind of, you can spend this, uh, amount of free cash given by the government in the next three months on a certain type of goods. Can you fraud in stock exchange? Nope. There is no purpose of that. Can you save them? Nope, because you're going to expand them three months and essentially they forced population to stimulate certain areas of the economy. And that may be this precision, which kind of classical monitoring system, ALEKS and central bank digital currencies can provide Michael. Michael Hall/ Nickel Digital: (10:24) So I think central bank currencies are very interesting, but they suffer from like three basic flaws. One is that, um, they don't stop the central banks printing, printing money in the same way. They print physical money. They can print digital money as well. They can just multiply the bits on the computer drive and they print more, more money. Secondly, they can, these currencies enable the central banks to do things they weren't able to do with paper money. One of these is negative interest rates. So are you seeing that, you know, interest rates on bonds have gone negative, but it's very difficult to have negative interest rates. Because if your bank's going to charge you a negative interest rate, you take all your money out and you just put that money underneath the, uh, underneath your mattress. And it keeps the same value. So that, that's how you get around that issue. Michael Hall/ Nickel Digital: (11:10) Um, with, uh, the third floor is, is a privacy. Now I'm not saying that everyone should be trading like privacy coins like Monero, but I think people expect that they have a level of privacy from the government, and it's not big brother where the government has a television and your TV camera in your living room. And they're not looking over your shoulder when you're using a bank account, you may not be doing illegal things, such, just buying drugs, but you might be buying a birthday present for your girlfriend was a question, Michael. Yeah, exactly. So, so you might be buying a processor, a birthday present for your girlfriend. You might, might not want her to know how much you've spent on it and what, and where it was purchased. So people expect a level of privacy with their money and cash gives them that privacy. And the question is what should digital cash gives them that? And that we have to strike a balance between having people being able to money on the drugs, which we would not want to have happen, but we also expect to not personalize a certain amount of money we can use to spend without the influence and knowledge. Dana Lewis - Host: (12:09) It's an interesting range of balance that you talk about, right? Because China, they are absolutely tracking every single purchase and they know exactly what everybody's doing. And it's the ultimate big brother through the use of, of their new digital currency. And then, like for instance, the Soufan center came out today and they said, cryptocurrencies are potentially a cover for a lot of elicit businesses. It's not the first time we've heard that. Right. But they talked about Hamas Qaeda, the Islamic state, uh, the, the, the, uh, U S intelligence agencies are trying to track digital currencies and Bitcoin and different coins that have been used by illicit organizations. So what's the middle ground here as this matures and develops and more mainstream investors are involved in it. What's the balance between, you know, kind of big brother and the bandit down the road that uses cryptocurrency to, to do, uh, to do bad things. Michael Hall/ Nickel Digital: (13:04) Okay. So, so we hit those arguments a lot and the more money has been laundered and used to finance terrorist activities using us dollar bills, but no one is proposing banning the U S dollar bill. Dana Lewis - Host: (13:16) No, but they are proposing tracking the accounts and tracking the transfers, right. Not proposing, but they do do it. Michael Hall/ Nickel Digital: (13:21) Okay. They should get rid of the a hundred dollar bill. The Germany should get rid of the European union should get rid of the 500 Euro bill. I mean, if that's, if you want to launder money, that's, that's the place to go, right? Your $500. And then the Swiss have a 1000 Frank bill. I mean, those are the ultimate money laundering tools, Bitcoin isn't, by the way, anyone who tries to launder money using Bitcoin isn't for surprise, because every transaction is publicly recorded and accessible to anyone. Who's got an internet connection. If you have a browser window connect to the internet, you can put in a blockchain address and you can see every single transaction that's gone through that address. Now there have, there have been some digital currencies, uh, designed for privacy, which we don't treat him. And the only real use case for those is that. So that's why we don't trade them. But it's a matter for the regulators. It's a matter for the central government to figure that out. The beauty is that if the government acts with two heavier hand, there are tools that exist for people to circumvent them. And just as the people in China who wants to use the internet, they can use the VPN. And so rather than have to read the Google search results filtered by the Chinese communist party, they can use the VPN and find out what Google really thinks. Dana Lewis - Host: (14:35) And I totally would you just look, as we wrap this up, guys, would you just look down the road, uh, and tell me, where do you see this going now? Because now you have governments that are getting into digital currency. You have investment companies that, and, and very reputable ones that before didn't want anything to do with digital currency. Now they're slowly opening the door because their clients want it. Where are we? Two and three and five years. Anatoly Crachilov/Nickel Digital: (15:03) Yep. We're being asked. Uh, one of the questions is whether the central bank digital currencies can distort to some extent or compete with, uh, Bitcoin as the pure cryptocurrency. And in my view, they cannot because Bitcoin is an asset with no monetary discretion, right? Nobody can influence the patient schedule while central bank currencies are there for completely different reasons. One of them is increased transparency of all the transactions, essentially you, as we discussed, eliminate any remaining privacy, but that allows States to create this kind of extract, valuable behavioral information about every single client, a customer, and ultimately allows a 4g to better manage the economy. Because what they're gaining is the real time spending updates for the whole economy and becomes what they're getting this kind of on demand, monetary policy, which they in a very precise manner now manage the economy by injecting money in various sectors. So for that purpose, it's completely different, uh, uh, use cases, right? From big investment point of view, digital central bank, digital currency are not attractive. You cannot really preserve your wealth. Dana Lewis - Host: (16:21) Why, why do it then, like, why are there calls? I mean, I know like the, the former national security advisor of Britain has just come out and said that Britain should have its own digital currency soon. So Anatoly Crachilov/Nickel Digital: (16:32) From the government perspective, as I just mentioned, that's a beautiful instrument to control micromanage the economy, right? So you have these very, uh, finely tuned spending, which you cannot observe on the individual level. You can transfer to individuals rather than you give money to commercial banks and the commercial banks push them into economy. And as we discussed in a not very efficient manner. So from the state point of view, having digital currents makes total sense. Now from investor investors, point of view, investing in digital currency makes no sense if you need store of value, you have to revert to an independent currency, which is one of them would be Bitcoin. And from here, Dana Lewis - Host: (17:18) Just because it's more navigate, not navigable, because there are limited assets like in Bitcoin. Anatoly Crachilov/Nickel Digital: (17:25) Exactly. As you know, there are 21 points ever to be issued of which 88% has already been issued. The balance of 12% will be issued over the next 120 years in a super predictable manner. So that's why you want to get exposure to that hard asset. What are we going to be for years, five years from now? I believe it will become part of institutional allocations as we have today, fixed income equities. Dana Lewis - Host: (17:50) So we'll be allocation, good digital assets. It will not, it will be kind of two percentage points. One, two [inaudible] fetal 5%, but there is a significant, important role. It's a diversifier of the portfolios and it creates efficiency on the institutional portfolio level improves your returns. We filed really boosting your risk, Michael, last word to you. Michael Hall/ Nickel Digital: (18:15) So one of the issues that the central banks had when they printed money is they gave it to all the banks and the banks went out and bought stocks and they Geoff basis a billionaire or sorry, made him more of a billionaire even richer. And it just increased wealth inequality. One of the benefits of central bank digital currencies is they, as Anatolia says, they can be very precise and targeting who gets the money and what the money gets spent on. And that's a much more efficient way of doing quantitative easing. They're just giving it to bank. So they have bigger balance sheets and the stock market goes up. So this is digital currencies, central bank, digital currencies enable them to actually give money, spend money where they want it and do that money printing in the, in the right way. Dana Lewis - Host: (18:57) You mean like for instance, like right now in this crisis where they're saying to people that, you know, people who are not being employed or unemployed, or, or who need, uh, some support during the COVID 19, they would be able to actually send a directly to a family or a person, and then they would allocate it only for food rent, something like that. Michael Hall/ Nickel Digital: (19:18) Exactly. A lot of those, uh, furlough checks that went out, went directly into people's bank accounts and that stimulated the real economy. It didn't make the stock market go higher in, in the first case, but it did stimulate the real economy. Dana Lewis - Host: (19:33) All right, guys, from nickel digital asset management, thank you so much. And the Tony Graciela and Michael Hall, Michael Hall/ Nickel Digital: (19:39) Thank you, Dana. A real pleasure thing this morning, Dana Lewis - Host: (19:47) Joining us now from Berlin. Germany is Max Kiernfelt, who is an analyst with Merics in Berlin and Merrick's is the marketure Institute for Chinese study. And they, uh, they analyzed sort of anything out of China and all things. And max, uh, has written a brilliant article in, uh, or co-authored a brilliant article in the diplomat, uh, on China and its digital currency. Hi max. Hi. So give us a background a little bit here. Some 5,000 people in Shenzen saw their phones light up in October, and they got a read on envelope digitally, which gave him about $30. Max Kiernfelt/ Merics: (20:24) That's right. So the Chinese government is launching a new digital currency, which is called digital currency, economic, electronic payments, which is perhaps not the most exciting name. So the idea is to use something, something similar to Bitcoin to create a virtual currency so that the, the paper renminbi, it has a digital, um, correspondence or a digital version of itself. And they've been testing this project in several different cities like [inaudible], and it started with this lottery where they're just giving money away, but some, uh, some government employees in some cities have also received the, uh, part of their paycheck in this, in this new currency. Dana Lewis - Host: (21:10) So it's really look, this is a very interesting shift for a lot of different reasons, right? And I want to, you know, take you through some of that, but, um, the people's bank of China said that this will make the, the RMB more popular around the globe. Are they trying to replace the U S dollar and trying to disengage from using the U S dollar as safe Haven and push their own currency? Op? Max Kiernfelt/ Merics: (21:34) Um, yes and no. Uh, this has been going on for a long time, and there's nothing new for th for Chinese officials to say that, uh, they want to replace the dollar or that they need to reduce the reliance on the dollar. So this is just the latest step in a, in a long process or where this has been talked about. But I mean, if you look at the actual results instead, it's pretty clear that the [inaudible] has not been growing in popularity around the globe, particularly much the last say 10 years. Um, it's, it's stable around two to 2.5% of, uh, Swift messages go are cleared in renminbi. Um, the reason for this is largely that China prefers it that way. Um, a great amount of, uh, renminbi usage would probably lead to appreciation of their currency. Max Kiernfelt/ Merics: (22:40) I think there's two parts to this. First of all, it's, it's a practical issue in the sense that the us has sanctioned countries in the past, uh, um, yeah, like around they, they can, uh, even though Swift is a Belgium company that can put a lot of pressure on Swift and banks to not do business with Chinese party parties, if they wanted to. And in the case of Iran, this, this led to them having to greatly devalue their currency to, to protect their economy, which was under enormous pressure. Um, then there is of course, a, a question of a narrative as well. These, these, uh, countries, uh, Russia and China don't want to see themselves as a part of the American system, they want to be respected equally. And of course, part of that means that anytime you have an opportunity to talk about being independent, to being strong individually, you have to take that opportunity. Dana Lewis - Host: (23:39) All right. So, so w when I took a look at some of the statistics, I mean, they jaw dropping in terms of the Chinese market on digital payment systems, like 80% of China is 900 million mobile internet users use their mobile phones for transactions, Chinese shoppers and merchants represent almost half the world's digital wallet users and Alibaba, and Tencent control, 95% of the market and cleared 50 trillion with a T in transactions in 2019. It is huge, the use of digital currency. Max Kiernfelt/ Merics: (24:17) Absolutely. Um, I think it's a little bit analogist to the way airports and subways were set up in China in the sense that if you look at a air, if you look at the infrastructure in the West, this is rather old and oftentimes built very long ago. Well, if everything in China is sort of new and fresh, and if I wanted to launch a payment system today, I wouldn't be using these old things that we use that we use in the West, but in China to have, um, they have, um, it's an emerging market. So they set up a new, fresh things. Um, this digitalization has been, um, the way it's been rolled out into the Chinese market has been very successful. I mean, everyone almost will use a, some form of online payment system, even farmers and, and surprise in the most surprising places. So you can go to the countryside in China and see people use these kinds of technologies to make payments. Dana Lewis - Host: (25:15) All right. So I've led you through this, and I've, we've kind of painted a picture that, you know, China innocently just wants to roll out a digital currency for efficiency, uh, to make them less reliant on the dollar. And probably at the end of, at the end of what we've talked about so far is, is where you take a turn in your article and the diplomat is that really, it's not about that. It's probably more about surveillance and control, is that right? Max Kiernfelt/ Merics: (25:43) Well, to some extent, yes. Uh, the fact that it, so most of the digital payment systems in China retinol are run by companies, Alibaba and Tencent. Now, if the central bank launches its own digital payment system, then that gives them control over the amount, the, the, uh, the monetary base to a large extent. And they already have, they can issue as much currency or as little currency as they want. They will have complete visibility of overall transactions that are made through their network. And they also have great ability to make users use their own preferred payment system. So it will undoubtedly result in a situation where, where the central bank has much more oversight of what's going on in the economy and can control things more in various ways. Dana Lewis - Host: (26:37) This is the ultimate big brother tool, Max Kiernfelt/ Merics: (26:42) What could be. But I think that something like this has multiple uses, obviously. So on the one hand, you can use this for things like this, but, but I think there are also a quality of life things here, uh, for the central bank sake, you can have greater control of inflation. Uh, oversight can be very good at, uh, at catching illicit transactions, transactions, and all sorts of things. So even though there is a control element, I don't want to be saying that that's the only use or the test, the main purpose of, I think that the policy makers in China are, are generally speaking, thinking rather broadly. And they are, uh, there are multiple goals with most of the policies they launch. Dana Lewis - Host: (27:26) You've obviously become a bit of a digital currency expert in, right in writing this piece and watching it. I mean, I guess because if you take a look at what's happening in digital currencies around the world, I mean, Bitcoin is punching through, you know, record levels. Um, uh, as many other digital currencies are cryptocurrencies are, but the whole design of those were to have anonymity, um, through blockchain technology. So do we need to separate the two, you know, topics when we're talking about China's digital currency and other governments, which are talking about moving towards digital currency in the original kind of cryptocurrency model, which was, you know, you could move money between people, um, and you could do it w with, with, you know, virtually anonymously. Max Kiernfelt/ Merics: (28:19) Yes. I think you need to do need to separate these two, because the technology that you use for, um, for Bitcoin is the blockchain, right? Where you are having something unchangeable as the main strength of the currency is that you have this, uh, you have this ledger that cannot be altered, or at least not easily altered. There are some blockchain experts who do say that it could potentially be hacked. Not that I know very much about that, but I think someone, someone said once that the distinction between, um, uh, an authoritarian regime will tend to gravitate towards AI solutions and a more democratic regime will tend to gravitate towards the blockchain solution. So this blockchain was, cannot be altered by the government as much. Uh, there will be a constancy of, of, um, of units, or maybe there is some sort of algorithm that produces units at some set pace. Whilst in this case, the central bank can of course issue as much currency as they want. Um, and I don't think it's very surprising that a central bank do they have control over instead of a currency that unalterable program Backstory on the digital revolution. Dana Lewis - Host: (29:43) It was supposed to take about 10 years, but it's been compressed and supercharged in the last year, mostly because of the pandemic. Yes. It was absolutely 100% intentional to not just copy-paste an actual elephant and give it human brain. I wanted the general concept of elephant (huge quadrupedal creature with a hand growing from its face, but with people-intelligence), and many of the following design choices were chosen specifically to make it look less like an elephant.

It's supposed to fit into a world where the equivalent of oxen looks like a cross breed of a highland cow and club tailed glyptodont, but with tapir-like feet and tusks that grow through their cheeks; where part of the skies are ruled by marsupial mammals that managed to evolve the general body plan of pterosaurs; where the most common family of ungulates have ceratopsid-style head shields instead of horns or antlers; and whatever this thing is (right) exists:

Just airdropping a plain old elephant wasn't going to fit in. It needed an ancestry and evolutionary history to match the world it was supposed to live in.

SA: Banqiao Dam Collapse

So this event is a perfect example of humans being bad at anticipating high-risk low-probability events.

After a period of rapid dam development, on the night of August 8th 1975, a perfect storm of factors came together to topple Henan (China) Province's Banqiao Dam and instantly killed an estimated 85,000 people. The estimated number of total dead (from flooding and the resulting epidemics and famine) is around 230,000.

Banqiao dam's designers had only built the dam to withstand a 1 in 1,000-year flood. Despite the flaws in structure, the dam might have survived if it weren't for the 1975 flood that was designated a 1 in 2,000 year event.

Context

The dam was completed in 1952 as part of a campaign to "Harness the Huai River" after severe flooding in previous years. Soon after completion, cracks began to emerge. As a result, from 1955-56, the structure was reinforced using Soviet specifications (which the Water Resources Ministry would later admit were inappropriate for the region). After renovations, Banqiao was dubbed the "Iron Dam" to reflect its newfound invincibility.

During the 1950s, over 100 dams and reservoirs were built just in Zhumadian of Henan Province along with Banqiao. A hydrologist named Chen Xing had warned that an overbuilding of dams and reservoirs could raise the water levels in Henan beyond safe levels, potentially leading to a disaster. After the Great Leap Forward (an economic and social campaign by the government), many of the projects were re-examined and renovated.

More than 100 additional dams were built in Zhumadian in the 1960s, on top of existing dams from the previous decade. These created reservoirs that claimed huge tracts of land previously reserved for flood diversion. However, the benefits of the dams (mostly economical) ultimately drowned out the warnings.

The Event

On 5th August 1975, a typhoon collided with a cold front (blocking the progression of the typhoon and parking it in place) over Henan and dropped the area's average yearly rainfall in less than 24 hours. The 106 cm of rain that fell that day far exceeded the 30 cm daily limit the dam's designers had anticipated.

Banqiao was ordered not to fully open its sluice gates (controls water flow) early in the storm to mitigate downstream floods that were already severe. Communication lines were soon knocked out, leaving operators guessing as to how the situation outside was unfolding. By the time the gates were fully opened, it was too late and water was rising faster than it could escape. The five sluice gates that were present (the recommended number of gates was 12) were partially blocked by silt (soil-like material) from the storm.

Workers tried to combat the rising water by frantically piled sandbags on top of the dam. They were aware of the millions of people were sleeping downstream. Just after 1:00 am, the storm cleared. Shortly after, the dam collapsed.

The equivalent of 280,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools swept the town at a speed averaging 50km/hr. The downed communication lines meant large scale evacuation was not possible.

When the dam had emptied and the waters (after about 6 hours) the water had nowhere to drain. Roads were flooded and rescue workers had no way to reach survivors, who waited on rooftops or huddled together on small patches of dry land. Food was airdropped, but much fell in the water and was lost or eaten after it had rotted. Some had to rely on floating livestock carcasses. As a result, disease spread quickly under the summer heat. It is estimated that for every person that died in the initial wave, five died from the famine and plague that followed.

Points of Failure

The major one would have to be not listening to experts who had warned of the potential catastrophe. Economical (and personal) benefits were prioritised over safety.

The initial design/building of the dam. It had cracks within the first year. Something went wrong there. More care should have gone to either designing (if it was a design issue) or construction (if it was a materials issue).

When they decided to renovate due to cracks, specifications followed were the Soviets. This was later admitted to be a bad idea as the conditions and hence requirements were different. This suggests lack of proper research before deciding on protocols to follow. That, or they just ignored it and hoped for the best.

Not following recommendation of 12 sluice gates and building only 5 instead. The collapse may have been prevented if more water could have been diverted away.

Not accommodating (enough) for the low-probability high-risk storm that led to the collapse. In most cases, designing for a 1 in 1,000 years storm should have been sufficient. However, freaks of nature like this still occur, and is a great example of humans being terrible at accommodating them

Actions Taken Since

The state had covered up the scale of the disaster (it was a normal practice to avoid culpability). In the wake of the event, there were signs of change. However, changes were made in response. With 87,000 reservoirs across the country, most built during a period of questionable construction standards, the government has taken a more aggressive stance on supervision and monitoring for needed repairs.

And in 2005, at a seminar in Beijing, officials and scientists agreed to open the Banqiao Dam failure for public debate and declared that casualty figures were no longer state secrets.

However, it seems history may be doomed to repeat itself. In the wake of 2011 Fukushima disaster, dams have been left to do most of the heavy lifting. As a result, China is on the cusp of another dam-building binge.

Personal Recommendations

Listen to your (local) experts. Build accordingly. Have multiple experts too, and make sure they all agree before starting to build. Do not rely on other country’s protocols (unless verified by experts)

Do not skimp on materials

Change laws/policies/regulations to ensure dams are built to withstand more than expected. With global warming and all, may want to build for a 1 in 5,000 year flood.

If you have a particularly big dam, make sure there is no (or very few) towns or villages underneath it. Relocate the people. Or just don’t build the dam there.

Digital detoxes are as stupid as juice fasts

I firmly believe that going completely offline is nothing less than anxiety inducing.

My program is setup to be a part-time digital detox that supports participants in developing a healthier relationship with their mobile devices. Phones are not the enemy, and just like yo-yo dieting, extreme rules from other wellness retreats to ‘unplug to reconnect’ is, in my opinion, promoting extreme behavior.

I’m proud to promote balance. Balance and harmony without the extremes… that’s how I roll. Just like I won’t tell a weight loss retreat client to ‘never eat chocolate’ I wouldn’t enforce a ‘never have your phone’ policy in Whistler. It just doesn’t make sense, and frankly, I don’t know what the digital detox retreats all over the internet are thinking.

Promoting all or nothing behavior is setting up for an unsustainable relationship with technology. And this is likely to trickle over into all-or-nothing diet or exercise mentality. I’m not buying the benefits of digital detox retreats, bottom line.

How our fitness vacations unplug in Whistler

Many of our customers choose a weight loss retreat with us partly because of the digital detox component during scheduled program hours. It’s nice to go on a hike where the other participants aren’t ‘on the scroll’ while walking over rocks, or chatting on their phone. Sometimes you can feel like you’re between everyones conversation with other people on group travel, and it’s hard to find the right moment to jump in and get to know them.

Besides the anti-social factor, it’s also a safety precaution that we request customers not to use ear buds for any reason – even for music. This is because the guides might need to shout out to them at anytime, whether it be wildlife, fallen rocks, or a crew of fast bikers coming in less than 2 seconds.

How it works is from the morning start (9am) until lunchtime (11.30am) your phones are on flight mode, unless you’ve got an emergency that you’re monitoring. I mean let’s face it, if you’re waiting for news from your fathers oncologist, you’re not going to enjoy the hike being blocked from the news.

At lunch you can – of course – session on your phone, and then from 12-2pm it’s digital detox time again. Then from 2pm onwards, it’s all yours to do as you please. You are, after all, an adult.

So what about photos?

We’re one of the few weight loss retreats in Canada where the fitness guides leading your day also double up as photographers. I provide staff with iphones for this task. Nearly all the images on this site were taken by our guides. They’re not professional grade, but definitely good enough for you to leave the photos to us.

We airdrop every week, or everyday if you want – it’s nice to have group photos of the best view points from your day. Of course, if there’s a special photo or view that you’d like to take with your own phone, you can – but only occasionally.

There’s also no cameras allowed during program hours because we’re a fitness retreat and the guided cardio adventures are required to keep a training pace. If we stop infrequently throughout the trails for various guests to take photos of choosing, then it turns more into a leisurely tourism tour. Can’t have that!

My phone was on flight mode while traveling through Bolivia. I didn’t pay data, and could connect whenever there was wifi for facetime etc.

I’ve been unplugged on my travels, and it really bugged me.

I’m not addicted to my phone, but I do enjoy being a good daughter, partner, friend and human. If someone wants to get hold of me, its 2020 and they damn well should be able to, no matter where I am in the world. I want to be that person for them. After a while when people drop off the response game, the out-reacher stops outreaching. I don’t want ‘my people’ to wonder if I’ll be there for them.

Unplug from technology and swap virtual tweets for the sound of real birdsong – even for one hike. You’ll find a restored sense of wellness.

With many of us spending the majority of our day scrolling down our smart phones or responding to emails, it is difficult to fully switch off and relax. This over-exposure to technology can leave us feeling disconnected to the present. This can lead to feeling stressed and overwhelmed; affecting sleep, focus and even our relationships with others.

I think that telling someone not to do something is a surefire way to make them want to do the opposite. I’ve always found the straight up digital detox retreats quite limiting, especially if you’re there for a few weeks.

Handshake Revealed: VCs Back Plan to Give Away $100 Million in Crypto

A long-secret cryptocurrency project whose investor deck once touted Burning Man as central to its anti-capitalist ethos has finally arrived.

Released Thursday, Handshake, backed by top venture capitalists and some of the most well-known blockchain developers, has raised $10.2 million for an attempt to replace the digital entities that today authenticate web payments, in the process rewarding those who built the essential infrastructure for the internet itself.

Spearheaded by the creator of bitcoin’s lightning network, Joseph Poon, Purse CEO Andrew Lee, Private Internet Access founder Andrew Lee and CTO Christopher “J.J.” Jeffrey, the effort is now backed by 67 individuals and funds including A16z, Founders Fund, Polychain Capital and Draper Associates.

The investors combined to purchase 7.5 percent of the protocol at a $136 million valuation.

The key difference here, however, is that this figure isn’t a valuation for a company, it’s a valuation for a protocol and its tokens – in the case of Handshake, there won’t be any entity to support (or value) beyond the protocol.

So while a remaining 7.5 percent of tokens will be set aside for the project’s “principles” (those involved eschew the term “founder”), more notable is what’s being done to quickly dismantle the entity that’s bootstrapping the project and distribute the remaining 85 percent of tokens, worth a combined $115 million, at launch.

In interview, Poon touted the new cryptocurrency as an experiment that’s heralding two leaps forward – an improvement on the existing CA system and domain registrars and also the initial coin offering (ICO) model itself, which that has found untested projects raising millions.

As such, Poon framed Handshake as a project intent on raising as little as possible, so that the largest amount could be given away to open-source developers.

Poon told CoinDesk:

“There’s this notion that crypto tokens when they go live, it’s similar to late-stage venture financing, and this gives an alternate model for that. Essentially we give tokens as a gift, we’re giving the coins as a gift to the community.”

All told, Handshake aims to give $250 worth of its tokens to *each* user of the websites the company has partnerships with – GitHub, the P2P Foundation and Freenode, a chat channel for peer-to-peer projects. As such, developers who have existing accounts on each could receive up to $750 worth of Handshake tokens.

Additional token distributions are set to go directly to the Electronic Frontier Foundation, the Tor Foundation and other like non-profits, while domains controlled by the protocol will go to those who can cryptographically prove they own one of the top 80,000 websites.

The goal, project leaders say, is ensuring what they framed as a recreation of the web, but without a shake-up in its stakeholders.In this way, Poon described Handshake as a donation, one that he hopes will set the tone for a new wave of more philanthropic blockchains.

“One of the goals is to kill the ICO ecosystem and narrative,” he said.

Old ideas, new twist

But if the idea already sounds too complex, Poon sought to stress the innovation with Handshake lies in the distribution, not the code itself.

A fork of a bitcoin software developed by Purse, Handshake offers “no fancy contracts,” just a simple digital, minable ledger to record engagements between users. Poon even went so far as to state plainly his belief the idea been done before, naming blockchain-based domain systems such as namecoin (one of the industry’s earliest projects) specifically.

However, he framed the effort as one that sought to answer the question of why the project failed, given that he believes the idea and technical team were strong.

“If you’re apple, why would you use namecoin? It has amazing developers and tech, but there’s always been a problem,” he said. “The way we attempt to resolve it is Handshake allows anyone to publish proof to the blockchain itself and then they get the domain name.”

Essentially, this would keep the decentralized equivalent of the Apple.com domain open to the company itself, rather than squatters and early adopters, who, hoping to score money on the flip, merely want to sell back these rights to those entities.

“What can you do with the tokens, you can move the tokens around. You can use it to register for names,” Poon continued.

As for the distribution, Poon, Lee and Lee sought to position the model not as an airdrop, in which funds are cryptographically distributed to those who are already users of a blockchain, but a return to the “faucet model” by which early adopters gave away thousands of bitcoin in order to get the word out about the project.

So far, investors seem keen on the idea, as the returns should the protocol become widely adopted (and accrue value) are still the same, even without the investment in an entity.

“We support experimentation and see this as an interesting social experiment with an interesting distribution method,” Ryan Zurrer, principal at Polychain Capital, said.

No foundation

But if rethinking the ICO and CA systems wasn’t enough, Poon sought to brand the project in even larger terms, emphasizing how Handshake is properly expressive of what he sees as the key innovation behind cryptocurrencies – the ability to give value, not just create it. Still, that’s not to say getting the project off the ground didn’t require time, legal work and the other trappings that have come to be associated with the ICO model.

In the case of Handshake, the project has been close to launch for at least three months, though Poon, Lee and Lee said it has been held up by questions of how to best position the wording around the project, as well as to finalize technical details.

The most notable change is that the project will no longer create a Handshake Foundation, a non-profit whose sole responsibility is to distribute the tokens and manage funds allocated to project contributors, instead automating the whole process to the extent possible.

“The idea originally was that the foundation would manually verify ownership of each of these names and do all these things. But, we found a way to automate that on the blockchain,” Lee, of Private Internet Access, said.

To best capture the “spirit of open-source,” those involved say that one day, there might not even be much evidence of a centralized start to the project at all. “We’re even thinking about turning off the website,” Poon said.

However, that’s not to say that he doesn’t have every aspiration that the model and ideas will be lasting.

“There’s a lot of pieces to this, there’s a notion of the nature of gift economies, perhaps there’s this emergent game where it’s in one’s own self-interest to ensure that the overwhelming majority of tokens are properly distributed to humanity,” he said, concluding:

“I think there could be interesting developments about this, and it could be one of the key features of what the blockchain can provide.”
