“You’re dating lieutenant Bishop?” Natasha stands in her place with her arms crossed over her chest, and a seemingly neutral look on her face. Although, Y/N that look is anything but neutral. “Maya Bishop of Station 19? Out of all the people in Seattle you started dating her?”
Letting out a sigh, Y/N shakes her head at her older sister’s words. “Yes, I am dating Maya. And I’m very happy with her.”
“But she’s so-“ she’s losing her resolve, steadily becoming more annoyed, “she’s reckless, Y/N. You haven’t seen her the same way I have.”
“I could say the same. I see how Maya is out of the job. She is sweet, and caring, and always treats me well.”
Natasha huffs. She knows she has no say when it comes to her sister’s relationship, but she can’t help herself, that’s her little sister after all, she basically raised her before going to army. “I’m still going to keep an eye on her. I don’t trust her with you.”
“Alright,” Y/N mumbles with a small giggle, “just please, don’t give her a hard time.” She gives Natasha a look, who just rolls her eyes and nods eventually. “Thank you.” Smiling, she makes her way out of her sister’s apartment.
Y/N walks into the station with a big box of food with her. What started out as bringing lunch or dinner to her girlfriend, ended up with basically feeding the whole Station 19 team. But she doesn’t mind, she knows they work hard and do long shifts, so cooking can sometimes be too tiring.
She makes her way upstairs, a big smile on her face when she sees most of the team hanging around the kitchen. “Dinner is here!” Y/N makes herself known.
Travis is the first one to walk over to her. “Our savior!” He takes the box and brings it to the kitchen counter so everyone can take their share of the food.
While the others are busy with the food, Maya comes over to hug and kiss Y/N. “Hi, my love.” She mumbles against her lips, a smile on her face.
“Hi.” Y/N giggles. “I missed you.”
“I missed you too.” Maya’s hand rests on Y/N’s waist, her fingers stroking her side softly. “Chief Ross is here.” She mumbles, clearing her throat as she straightens her back, as if just speaking Chief Ross’ name would make her appear out of nowhere.
“Has she done anything?”
“No, just keeps giving me looks.”
Y/N hums, “go eat.” She mumbles, kissing Maya’s cheek while gently pushing her towards the kitchen counter.
They walk over to the others, Maya making herself a plate while Y/N starts talking to the others. She quickly grew close to the whole team after getting together Maya. The team almost became like a second family, besides Robert Sullivan, but that’s just the same sisterly protectiveness that Natasha has towards her.
Maya sits down next to her, one of her hands resting on Y/N’s thigh while she eats with her free hand. “You aren’t eating with us?” She glances at her when there’s a break in the conversations going on.
“I ate before I came, wanted my hardworking girlfriend to have more to eat.” She grins, her eyes very discreetly going over Maya’s muscles.
Maya always sees it, but she likes it.
“Chief Ross!” Victoria exclaims suddenly. “Join us for dinner? Y/N brought it for us.”
“No, thank you.” Natasha’s eyes are on Y/N and Maya, studying at the latter woman’s every single move, as she has does ever since she found out they’re dating.
As Maya notices this sharp look trained on her, she goes to move her hand away from Y/N, but Y/N sets her own on top if it, giving her a reassuring smile.
“Hi, Nat.” Y/N smiles. “I didn’t know you were here today.”
“I didn’t know you’d be here either.”
Rolling her eyes with a smile, Y/N leans against Maya. “I’m here practically every day.”
Letting out a hum, Natasha nods. “I won’t be here for long, just checking on things.” Her eyes going to the hand on her sister’s shoulder at the word things, making it very clear for the three of them what she is talking about.
There’s a small frown on her face, small enough for no one else to recognize it but Y/N. The touch looks very soft, and safe. It kind of makes her feel worse, she was hoping for something to prove that Maya is irresponsible.
When Chief Ross finally leaves, Andy turns to Maya and Y/N. “Did she know you two are together?”
“I told her some time ago.”
She raises her brows, a playful grin on her face. “How’d she take that?”
“Like any older sister would.”
Y/N paces around the entry of the station, Jack’s words going straight put of her mind as she stresses for Maya’s return.
The rest of the team, and Chief Ross, are putting out a larger than average fire, and according to the news stations, it hasn’t been going too well.
“They’ll be okay.” Jack assures, his eyes following Y/N’s movement. “We know how to handle these kind of things.”
He gets no answer, just more silent pacing.
Of course she knows that the team is very capable, but she can’t help worrying about them. She’s a doomscroller, she has read every article there is about huge fires which have taken multiple firefighters’ lives.
The garage door opens. Y/N lets out a breath, her worries aren’t completely gone, but she is out of her head enough to make her way to the garage.
Everyone looks tense as they get out of the fire trucks, but they all also look alive, that’s enough for Y/N to go straight to Maya and pull her into an embrace.
Natasha sees this. She takes a step forward, ready to intervene in case Maya snaps because of her less than ideal mood.
“Baby.” Y/N whispers, one of her hands burrowing into Maya’s hair while the other rubs her back.
Maya wraps her arms around Y/N’s waist, pushing her face into the crook of her neck. “I’m okay.”
“You’re okay.”
She gives small smiles to the others, glad that they all got away with minimal damage, but otherwise she keeps all of her attention on her girlfriend.
After a while, her eyes connect to Natasha, who is still standing on her place. “Go change. I’ll drive you home and to work tomorrow, yeah? So you can leave your car here.” She whispers, kissing Maya before the blonde makes her way upstairs where the rest of the team is.
“Are you okay?” Y/N throws her arms around Natasha’s neck, bringing her to a hug.
“Yeah,” Natasha lets out a breath, “everyone’s a little beat up, but they’ll survive.” She mumbles, pulling away. They stare at each other for a minute. “Listen, I’m sorry. For doubting Maya. She’s..good to you, and you are good to her.”
Y/N smiles. “She’s the greatest.” She whispers. “Will be able to take care of yourself if I go take care of Maya?”
“Of course. Go care for your girlfriend.”
Giving Natasha a one last hug, Y/N goes upstairs to sit beside Maya in the dressing room and waiting for her to get ready to go home.

Could you write Maya Bishop and little sibling reader. Reader is about to graduate college and is looking forward to freedom away from Lane. Maya has shown up always to support reader in any way possible.
Tumblr media
Authors note: I'm having a really crappy day and it's not even 9am so… here's a little comfort story with Maya Bishop so that if you're also having a bad start to the day like me, it might get a little better.
ᕚ---ᕘ
It was afternoon as you sat at the desk in your room. In front of you lay a whole stack of books that represented the last four years of your life and the finished thesis that you had already handed in weeks ago. The room was filled with a strange mix of relief and sadness as you realized the chapter in your life was nearing its end, and the anticipation of your independence was hard to miss on your face.
You stared out the window as the leaves rustled outside with the gentle summer wind and you thought about all the years you tried to please your father but never seemed to achieve it, no matter what you did or how hard you tried. Nothing was ever good enough for him.
The room was silent, only the rustling of leaves reached your ears and the dull sound of arguments in your memory could be heard. The unsaid words, the heavy punishments and the screaming voice of Lane were still hidden deep within the walls, your father's stubborn, unyielding face still visible in front your eyes. He never understood who you really were, never understood that you would never be what he imagined.
Your eyes wandered to an old photo on the desk - a picture of you with your whole family when the world was simpler, before Maya moved out and your relationship with your father became more complicated and strained. You longed for a life that was not burdened by him. The future seemed uncertain, but also full of freedom and new beginnings, far from the difficult relationship with your father.
Lost in thought, you closed your eyes briefly and took a deep breath. Breaths of freedom wafted through your room and the idea of finally being independent gave you a warm feeling of relief. Soon you would leave this place, throwing off the shackles of your past and into a future of your own making. Freedom lay before you like an open book, and you were already writing the first pages with your sister.
„Hey you,“ a soft voice pierced your ears, tearing your thoughts apart. You looked up as your sister entered your room, a worried look on her face. "Maya! What brings you here? Are you not on shift?" you got up from your seat and quickly walked towards her. You let yourself be pulled into a tight hug and jumped on top of her, clinging to her like a little monkey. The older one giggled and tried to walk to the bed with you in her arms to sit down with you. "I have the day off and I thought, maybe you would like to stay with Carina and me for the weekend?"
A wide smile sparked on your lips, making the thin, thoughtful lines from before disappear. You nodded your head wildly as it rested on her shoulder and pulled away from her. "That would be really great, let me just pack up a few things?" With those words you set out to pack some clothes and the most important things into a carrying bag. “Y/n?”
"Yes, Maya?" The blonde sighed loudly, hesitating for a moment with the question that had been plaguing her ever since she saw you at the desk with the family picture you were holding in your hands. "I Am a little worried," she began to speak, standing up to close the open door to prevent some unidentified ears from overhearing the conversation. Lane was at home and his hearing was acute whenever she visited you. "What exactly are you worried about?" You asked seriously, stopping what you were doing to listen carefully to your sister.
"I know what you were just thinking about before I came in. You are thinking about whether leaving home is the right decision and I can understand why," she padded onto the empty seat next to her as she sat back on the edge of your bed. You reluctantly found your place, your leg bent as you nervously played with the end of your pants. "He is our father, I know. But he is a toxic environment for you, he is not good, y/n. He denied you everything that makes a human being. Your individuality, your freedom and your dignity. He wanted to break you and it is time to disappear."
"But he is our family. Mother too. What if I lose her? Then I only have you," Maya could sense that you were close to tears and fighting them back as the last words came out broken and you swallowed hard. Gently, she placed a hand on your shoulder and pulled you in to welcome you into her arms again. "Both of them never really supported us or loved us the way we deserved. It hurts, but it is the truth. We have a family, people who understand and accept us as we are. Station 19."
"But it still hurts to know that we are leaving our roots behind. Even if they are poisonous, they are our parents," you looked into Maya's eyes, tears flowing freely down your cheeks. She took your hand and mingled her fingers with yours before her thumb stroked the back of your hand. "But sometimes we have to let go to save ourselves. We can not live in this shadow forever and must find our own light to shine."
ᕚ---ᕘ
The light of the setting sun bathed the campus in a warm, pink glow as you walked up the steps to the podium in your graduation robe to receive your diploma. The smile on your face radiated pure relief as you held the diploma roll tightly in your hand and ran your thumb over the red ribbon. The burden of college that you had carried for years seemed to magically disappear from your heart and you exhaled deeply to ground yourself.
You looked for your older sister who was standing at the edge of the fairground with the whole team of Station 19 next to her, a proud look evident in her glittering eyes. They were the only family that had accompanied you that day, and their presence meant more to you than a thousand words could ever express. Maya had always believed in you, even when Lane could not and your mother was too scared to show it.
You felt a knot unraveling inside you as you looked out over the cheering graduates, proudly throwing their graduation hats into the sky. A feeling of freedom spread through you as you thought that you were now in control of your own life. No more strict rules, no more unfulfillable expectations from your father with additional punishments. You would go your own way, with Maya by your side.
The ceremony began, and as the graduates celebrated their achievements, you could not help but look at your sister, who smiled back with proud eyes, and jump into her arms. "I am so proud of you, sweetheart. You did it," she spoke joyfully, pressing her lips tightly to your forehead while spinning you around. „Ready for a new life?“
You nodded happily and smiled widely at your bigger sister. It was a moment of connection and understanding between the two of you. A promise to build a future together, free from the shadows of the past and away from Lane. A well-deserved college degree, a symbol of freedom, was within reach.

Karaoke night
“Will they make it?” Maya asked concerned.
“They have very severe burns and all the smoke inhalation isn't helping, but you guys arrived just in time, so it hasn't compromised anything irreversibly.” Bailey said “We can't make promises but I'm positive about it”.
“I really hope you're right” Maya added, letting out a slow breath she didn't know she was holding.
“Luckily for you, I usually am!” Bailey exclaimed, raising her eyebrows in satisfaction, trying to lighten the mood  “Go home Bishop, if there's any significant update, I'll let you know”.
“Thank you Bailey”. She said, checking the time and seeing her shift was due to be over like an hour ago, so she opted for heading home.
She had tough calls almost every week, but some of them hit her harder than the others, and this one was one of them: they had arrived at the scene when it was already a three-alarm fire, because they couldn't put out the fire as it seemed to be originated by something that kept on igniting it every time they tried to use water or normal extinguishers. The problem was that when 23 arrived there first, their captain thought the fire started because of a short-circuit, which wasn't completely wrong, but what they hadn't noticed was that there was something more. They kept on using CO2 extinguishers, but that didn't seem to work. When 19 arrived, the situation was insanely bad: they still hadn't been able to rescue the couple inside of the house and nothing had improved. When Maya checked the structure, she noticed a slightly detached garage, which was linked to the building through a dangerous roofing containing asbestos but hadn't  been checked: the fire kept on reigniting because it was a metal involving fire, and that's why both water and CO2 were useless. Luckily, they had the right equipment to contain the situation, due to a training course they had done previously that week: while she contacted the specialized team for these kind of fires, they were able to put it out after a while, and she had to go in to help find the couple. When they found them, they were unconscious, but they still had a pulse: it was weak, but it was there. What moved Maya so much was how they had found them: they were two women, full of sooth and dust, one of them trying to cover with her body the other, trying to prevent her from inhaling too much smoke. They had rings on their hands, the same one, so they were probably a couple: obviously, it wasn't the first time she had to save a family, but that view made her think of Carina, her family. At the only thought of losing her, she felt sick, she couldn't breathe, but she had to focus back on the present, to be able to actively help. As soon as she was out, she jumped on the aid car and, while heading towards the hospital, using the update of her probably being late at home as an excuse, she called Carina, who had a day-off, just to hear her voice and let it soothes her.
While she was driving home, she replayed that image in her head, over and over again, and she felt her chest tighten, as if the car was closing in on her. Before stepping inside, she shook her thoughts away and took the keys. As soon as she opened the door, she was welcomed by the warmest smile she had ever seen.
“Ciao Bella! I missed you” Carina said, coming over towards the blonde, who didn't even bother to say anything, just going straight for a lingering kiss.
“I missed you too. A lot.” Maya finally added, looking the Italian in the eyes, before pulling her in a  tight hug.
“How was your day?” Carina asked, noticing that something was probably off, but willing to give Maya the time she needed to talk about it.
“It was tough, actually pretty tough” she replied, exhausted “but I'm finally here with you and that's all that matters right now”, she added, caressing Carina's face, kissing her softly.
“Yeah, I'm always here with you bella!” Carina stated, trying to reassure Maya, who still seemed a little off “if you want, we can call Andy and Vic and put off the party, so that you can relax”.
At those words, Maya's eyes went wide: how was it possible that she had forgotten about it?
“Mmm, it looks like someone forgot about the party here” Carina chuckled against Maya's lips.
“Yep, I know, I know. I'm hopeless.” the blonde said, smiling a little “Anyway, no, I don't want to postpone it. I think it will be fun. I only need to take a shower and I'm ready”
“Take your time, bella. Vic and Andy will be here in an hour.” the Italian explained
“Sooooo... that means you could join me?” Maya asked, not as flirty as usual, just needing to have her girlfriend close.
“Mmm, let me think...” Carina faked doubting her answer “As the snacks and everything are already set up, I think I can make the effort to join you” she added jokingly.
“Glad to know spending time with me is an effort, Dr. De Luca, how kind of you to let me know it!” she exclaimed, trying to sound offended.
“Well, that's the only effort I'm never gonna complain about, Captain Bishop.” she reiterated, in order to keep the mood light and easy, wishing to cheer Maya up a little.
“Mmm, that's a pretty good point, I have to admit” the blonde grinned softly, wrapping her arm around the Italian's waist, heading to the bathroom.
While they were showering, they were standing under the hot water, next to each other, Carina gently stroking Maya's hair, “Promise me” the blonde said, out of the blue “that you won't leave me”.
It caught the Italian off guard, but she immediately replied “Of course, I promise bella. Why would you think so?” she whispered, turning Maya's face towards her so that they were facing each other.
“The call, today... I couldn't help but think about you: that couple, their lives turned upside down in the blink of an eye... I can't lose you” her voice cracked.
“And you won't bambina, ever “ Carina knew she couldn't make promises, because life is unpredictable, but she felt the urge to reassure Maya and she truly believed her own words “Come here”.
They stood there, hugging each other until Maya's breath started slowing down. When they got out of the shower, hands still intertwined, they quickly got ready and within 15 minutes, the doorbell rang. “Hi Andy! Hi Vic! Hi...ehm...Michelle? Did I get it right?” Carina greeted warmly.
“Yeah, you're right!” Michelle smiled back “thanks for having me over without warning.” she added, looking around, trying to spot where Maya was.
Andy noticed her and gave her a look, before walking towards Carina and asking if her friend was okay, receiving a slight nod from the Italian.
A few seconds later, Maya walked into the living room, going straight to where Carina was standing, near the sofa, pressing a kiss on her cheek, looking at her with heart eyes.
“Oh C'mon guys, you're too cheesy. I can't with you two” Vic shouted, making everyone laugh.
“Shut up Hughes, or I'll kick your ass at the karaoke contest later, and also you don't want to be on toilet duty for next week, do you?” the blonde reiterated, raising her eyebrows.
“See?” Vic said raising her hands, looking at Carina “she is like that with EVERYONE.  She's an aggressive pitbull with us, then with you... it turns out she's a little puppy. What kind of black magic is this???” the younger firefighter added teasingly “And anyway, that's abuse of power, Cap.”
Carina couldn't help but laugh and so did Maya, even though she didn't wait to tease back “Good call Hughes. Two weeks on toilet duty, you're welcome.” she stated, getting a groan as a response.
“Ok, something is telling me that it's going to be a loooong night” Andy said, walking towards the table “Can we eat something, I'm starving!” she continued, picking up some bags she had brought with drinks and homemade tacos.
“These tacos smell soo good” Carina stated, helping Andy to serve the food, while Vic and Maya were setting up the TV, the audio and the sofa for the contest.
“Michelle prepared them, it's my tía's special recipe” she explained, inviting Michelle to join them.
“Oh thank you” You didn't have to!” Carina said “I'm sure they taste amazing.”
“I really hope so” Michelle shyly smiled “So...you are an OB/GYN at Grey Sloan?” she asked, out of curiosity.
“Yep, I've been working there for three years now.” Carina replied “It's an amazing job: every life is worth every problem you may run into, all the cryings and the misunderstandings” she continued, thinking about Teddy's child, Amelia's and all the other babies she was able to bring into this world. “What about you?” she asked back.
“Well, I'm a bit of a mess right now” she chuckled “at first, when Andy joined the academy, I wanted to do the same, especially when I heard about some friends of hers who were really hot, but I gave up before even sending my application, I wasn't cut out for the job.” she admitted “So I started dancing again and now I'm giving salsa classes for little kids, but it doesn't pay off for the effort. Kids are exhausting!”.
“I see your point, they are often hyperactive!” the Italian added “but I love dancing! A friend of mine has a school and I know she's looking for staff, if you want, I can talk to her about you!” she offered kindly, not catching the hint about the “hot friends” which actually was only about Maya.
“Are you serious??” she almost shouted “That would be amazing!!”
“Yes, I am!” she laughed “I'll talk to her tomorrow and let you know!”.
“Thank you Carina, you made my day.” Michelle stated, a wide grin on her face.
“What's all this euphoria about?” Andy asked, pretty confused.
“Carina just told me that her friend is looking for qualified staff for her dance school, and it may mean no more crying kids” she answered, still a bit shocked.
“Oh and no more me hearing about your complains! That would be revolutionary” she joked “This needs a cheer”.
“What needs a cheer?” Maya and Vic asked together, walking towards the kitchen.
“Your girlfriend is an angel” Andy declared “and I'm starting to think she has magic powers for real.”
“I told you!! She's from an outer world” Vic added vehemently, getting looks from Maya and Andy “Ok, that sounded a little bit too aggressive but you got the point! Anyway, I'm up for the cheer!”.
“So am I, even though I'm slightly confused” Maya admitted, walking to Carina and wrapping her arm around her “but I know your special powers so, I've no doubts it's well deserved” she whispered, making Carina blush and turn towards her.
“I love you” she whispered back, leaving a kiss on Maya's lips, as if they were alone in their bubble, but that didn't last for too long.
“Nope, not again under my salad.” Vic stated, pulling Maya away towards the couch “We have to play, but if you're in this mode we won't even start”.
“Just... out of curiosity: which mode are you talking about?” Maya furrowed her eyebrow.
“Are you seriously asking me that? You only have two: the “Bad bitch” mode or “the simp” one. I guess you'll figure it out on you're own which one I was talking about”.
“You're risking a lot tonight Hughes” Andy chuckled, knowing her friend.
“I'm speaking facts and you know that Herrera” Vic said, matter of fact.
After having some food and a few drinks so that everyone was a little tipsy, but still almost sober, they got settled in the couch and Vic explained the rules.
“So, the game works like this: Andy will be the judge and she will pick the songs. As soon as one of us knows the title, we have to get up and the first one who does it must say the title, the singers and sing a little part of it. One point only if we get everything right. Is everything clear?” She demanded.
“Yep, but... what are the teams?” Maya asked, looking at the younger firefighter but stroking Carina's hand who was sitting next to her.
“Oh yes, I had forgotten. Carina and I will be together, so Maya and Michelle, you two make the other team.”  Vic added.
“Wait, what? Why?” Maya groaned disappointed, causing Carina to laugh.
“Because we need you active and present, and if you're in the same team as Carina, you won't definitely be that.” Andy teased.
“Fine” Maya mumbled “Michelle: we have to win!”
“You bet!” Michelle immediately replied, squeezing the blonde's arm with no reason, causing Carina to crinkle her nose.
“You ready? 3...2...1...”
Music playing (Blank Space)
As soon as the first words were sang, Maya stood up and shouted “Me, me, I know it.”
“Ok, title and singer. Then you have to sing a part which is not the refrain”. Andy stated.
“Blank Space, by Taylor Swift.” she answered fiercely and then started to sing as a teenager driving in her car in the middle of the night “And I know you heard about me, So hey, let's be friends I'm dying to see how this one ends, Grab your passport and my hand...”
“Ok, ok, I got it, you know the song!” Andy laughed at her friend's enthusiasm, glad she was feeling better.
“Sorry, I got carried away” Maya admitted, turning to look at Carina, who was there, looking back at her with a loving smile.
“Ok, 1-0 for Maya and Michelle.” Andy remarked, making Vic groan. “Let's go with another one...”
Music playing (I like it)
Within a second, Michelle got up and started moving around “No me esperaba un golpe tan bajo prima” she said, starting to sing along with the song which she was weirdly used to listening to every time she broke up “I like it by Cardi B”
“That's not fair, what's all this camaraderie?” Vic mumbled “ you're the judge!!”
“I just wanted to piss you off a little” Andy chuckled “Anyway, 2-0 for Maya and Michelle”.
“Carina, we can't let them win!! I want you to be the most competitive you've ever been in your life!” Vic said, almost commanding it.
“Yes, I promise we'll win! I'm ready to kick asses” Carina stated, causing Maya to laugh a little.
“Here we go with the third one...” Andy said.
Music playing (she looks so perfect)
On the first note, Carina jumped off the couch “ It's She looks so perfect by 5SOS”, and she continued, screaming to the top of her lungs from the very first second until the refrain came “She looks so perfect standing there, In my American Apparel underwear, And I know now, that I’m so down, Your lipstick stain is a work of art, I’ve got your name tattooed in an arrow heart, And I know now, that I’m so doooooown”.
While singing, she got closer to Maya, feeling every word she was saying, causing the blonde to blush before she pulled her in for a soft kiss and a gentle stroking on her chin.
“Ok, ok, I'm not gonna complain because you got us the point but please come back to this world, cause we're still 2-1 for them, the judge is impartial and we need to win” Vic said, pulling Carina back towards her seat.
“Sorry, I got carried away too.” Carina admitted sheepishly, probably alcohol inhibiting all of her composure.
“Yep, you two should walk around with stones on your feet, you get carried away a little too often” the younger firefighter mumbled.
“Competitive Vic is quite a pain in the neck” Andy teased “not the normal one is something so different though”. Vic faked to get offended before Andy picked the fourth song.
Music playing (Chicago, All that jazz)
All of them were looking at each other confused, but Vic immediately got up and started dancing “Start the car, I know a whoopee spot, Where the gin is cold, But the piano's hot. It's just a noisy hall,Where there's a nightly brawl, And all that jaaaaaazz!”
“It's All that jazz from the musical Chicago by Catherine Zeta Jones” Vic shouted, out of breath “C'mon guys, you don't know it?????”
“I heard it but I didn't remember the title” Maya admitted “Anyway, how about the camaraderie now?? You're the only one which is into musical sooo...” she groaned.
“I guess now we're even.” Vic nonchalantly claimed.. “We can do it Carina!”
“You're unbelievable” Maya mumbled, before the fifth song started playing.
Music playing (Mirrors)
Before Michelle could get up, Carina was already singing, Vic already celebrating for the point while the Italian was once again getting closer to Maya, who this time was whispering the lyrics together with her girlfriend, not caring about the lost point.
“I don't wanna lose you now, I'm looking right at the other half of me, the vacancy that sat in my heart is a space that now you hold.” they both sang together, lightly swinging from side to side, with Maya's head buried in Carina's neck getting an “AWW” from Andy and the usual groan from Vic, who was secretly enjoying the scene which actually looked like a film.
“It's Mirrors by Justin Timberlake anyway”. Carina said, wanting to be correct.
After a few minutes, everyone got back in their seat, after deciding Andy should just opt for the shuffle play.
“3-2 for Carina and Vic now” Andy remarked. “Ready?”
Music playing (Numb)
Vic and Michelle gave each other a look, the song playing not really their genre and also Andy seemed pretty confused. Carina knew the song but was too worried checking in on Maya's reaction that she didn't even think about getting up to get the point.
Maya downplayed it very well, trying to keep the mood light so after saying that it was Numb, by Linking Park, she started singing as if she was at a concert. Nobody but Carina noticed the change in her eyes and with the excuse of having a little pause before continuing, she took Maya's hand and brought her to their bedroom.
“Hey bambina, are you okay? I know how much that song means for you...” Carina asked gently, caressing Maya's face.
“Yeah, I'm okay, it was just a moment, it hit me a little, but I'm okay, I promise” Maya admitted, looking down, searching for Carina's left hand.
Carina knew it was the song Maya used to listen to every day when she became aware of her father abusive behavior, she knew how much all the words showed how bad Maya was hurting and that even though she had come a long way, scars could easily start bleeding again.
“Come here” the Italian said, hugging the blonde as tight as she could, knowing that it would give her the comfort she needed.
“I love you so much” Maya said, pulling Carina in for another lingering kiss.
“I love you too”, she whispered back against her lips, before kissing her again.
Within few seconds, they were back in the living room, Vic giving Maya an annoyed look.
“What??” Maya asked.
“You're trying to bribe my teammate!!” Vic shouted, causing Maya to mumble.
“Maya, we need to win!! If we do, I promise I'll bring more tacos the next time!” Michelle said, taking Maya by the hand and pulling her towards her seat. Maya didn't even notice the little flirt, but Carina surely did and she didn't like it at all, but she didn't want to make a scene so she just started cursing the woman internally.
“Ok, 3-3...here we go” Andy reestablished the order.
Music playing (Born this way)
As it was hard to find a straight person in that house, they all got up but the very first one was paradoxically Vic, who even started dancing with the exact steps. “Born this way by the Queen of Queens, Lady Gaga” She shouted, in a very Travis' way, as she kept on singing it.
“What kind of joke is this?” Maya teased “You're the only straight person in here and you just stole our hymn!! That's not fair!!”.
“Take it up with Travis. This is the soundtrack to his workout sessions everyday, so I know every single note of this song” she admitted proudly “I think people could actually believe I'm Lady Gaga if it wasn't for the height difference” she joked.
“Oh yeah, because height is the only difference” Maya teased “Hughes, I love your naivete, it's so cute!” she added.
“Bishop, fuck you” Vic reiterated, throwing a cushion at her friend.
“Ok, it's getting serious now. 4-3 for Carina and Vic: these are the last two songs. Maya and Michelle, if you win this, there's the final battle”. Andy declared.
“We're ready” Maya replied, on the edge of the couch.
Music playing (Dura)
As soon as the music started playing, Vic understood it was some raeggeton music which she didn't know at all but Michelle undoubtedly would. In fact, within two seconds, the Latina got up, shouting “It's Dura, by Daddy Yankee” and started singing, probably a little too tipsy. “Cuando yo la vi, Dije, si esa mujer fuera para mí, Perdóname, te lo tenía que decir, 'Tás dura, dura”
While singing she got closer and closer to Maya, looking at her like she was addressing those words to her, but Maya didn't even seem to care or understand what was going on. In the meantime, Carina was watching the scene, trying hard to contain herself, before she heard Michelle whispering something in Spanish to Andy.
“Si no fuera que ella está con Carina, ya le habría pedido que tengamos una cita...esta tía esta demasiado buena. Deberías habérmela presentado antes prima: os conocéis desde la academia, no me lo puedo creer”.
Carina was pretty fluent in Spanish, so she understood everything: all she wanted to do was telling Michelle to stay the hell away from her girlfriend, but what she did instead was showing that Maya wasn't going anywhere.
While the music was still playing, she got up and sat on Maya's lap, starting to dance in a very flirty way: the blonde was now more than alert and she couldn't help but smile at the Italian, gently caressing her back and kissing her neck. If it wasn't for Vic again, they had (at least Maya) completely forgotten they weren't alone.
“What was that for?” Maya asked grinning to Carina.
“Nothing, just a little reminder” Carina smirked before kissing the blonde and then going back to her seat.
“This is the last song, I want you to be extremely concentrated” Andy stated in a serious tone.
“We got this” Vic said “We have to win” she added, talking to Carina.
“Yes, yes, yes!” Carina replied, sitting on the edge.
For this last song, Andy decided to take a little revenge on Maya: as she had won their last Taboo game, she wanted to give Carina and Vic a little help to get their last point and win the competition. She opted for an Italian song, but little did she know Maya had improved a lot...
Music playing (Anche fragile)
It was a fraction of second: Maya was already up, the lyrics hadn't even started but she had already said the title “It's an Italian song, it's Anche Fragile by Elisa”.
Andy and Vic were shocked, but not Carina, as it was her favorite song and she used to play it on repeat on their nights together, so she knew that Maya would have recognized it.
“Well, you have to sing it or you won't get the point” Andy declared, sure that her friend couldn't bring her self to speak a word of that “weird” language.
Carina chuckled knowing that Maya would have probably messed up all the words, but instead, she was caught off guard, as the blonde started singing it.
“Tienimi su quando sto per cadere, tu siediti qui parlami ancora se non ho parole, Io non te lo chiedo mai, ma portami al mare, a ballare...”
Everyone's eyes were wide open at the unexpected event that had just happened and the Italian couldn't believe it either.
“Bella, you learned it!” she said, still a little moved from the gesture.
“Yes, I learned the whole song actually” she confessed, blushing a little.
“Thank you” Carina said grinning, pulling Maya in for a soft kiss.
“Ok Bishop, I must admit: you deserved it” Vic admitted, raising her hands “you practically sang a song in Italian, that was awesome! And it also shows how much of a simp you are!” Vic couldn't help but teasing.
“Shut up, Hughes” Maya shouted, throwing back at her the cushion from before.
“Oh crap, it's almost Midnight and I had said to Robert I would have been home by 23. I think we should go!” Andy said, picking up her stuff “Thank you girls, for everything, it was good fun and I really enjoyed it!” she added, heading towards the door.
“Yep, so did I, despite knowing that my Cap will put me on toilet duty only because I speak facts about how in love she is with her super hot Italian girlfriend” Vic teased again, getting a little smack from Maya “No, apart from joking, it was awesome! We have to do this again”.
“I'll think about it, very carefully” Maya teased back.
“Thank you for everything, really. Especially you Carina, about the work” Michelle said, making Carina to force a little smile “And thank you Maya, it was very nice getting to see you again” she added, caressing Maya's hand.
Before waving them goodbye, that's when Carina thought she should make things a little bit clearer: “Lo siento mucho, pero quería decirte que Maya ya tiene novia, así que deja tu alma en paz y empieza a buscar a otra chica. Sé que es muy guapa, pero también sé que es mi novia y quisiera que tu también no te olvidaras de eso. Entendido?” [I'm really sorry, but I wanted you to know that Maya has already a girlfriend. So, just give it up and start looking for someone else. I know she's hot, but I also know she's my girlfriend and I'd like that you didn't forget about it either. Got it?]
As those words let her mouth, Michelle's jaw dropped and completely embarrassed, she reached Andy who was waiting for her with Vic in the car.
When Carina closed the door, she turned around and she saw a very confused Maya staring at her: “So you know Spanish??” she asked.
“A little, I studied it at high-school and kept on practicing it with TV series” she explained.
“And why were you talking to Andy's cousin in Spanish” Maya asked again, still not figuring out what was going on.
“I just wanted to make things clearer and I thought it was the best way” she said, walking towards the blonde and wrapping her arms around her waist.
“And what did you need to get across that well that couldn't be said in English?” Maya chuckled, putting her arm around Carina's neck.
“Maya, you didn't notice, did you?” Carina wondered, laughing a little.
“Notice what?” Maya asked, now more confused than ever.
“She was flirting with you!! And I also heard her talking to Andy about you in Spanish, but unluckily to her, I understood everything”. She explained.
“Wait, really???” Maya couldn't believe it. She didn't acknowledged it at all, too busy admiring Carina.
“Yes, so I just wanted to let her know that she better stays away from you, if her intentions are flirting all the time!” Carina groaned jealously, making Maya laugh.
“Oh so, someone is jealous... it could be a good thing...” Maya smirked “anyway, you only preserved hr from putting effort in something she couldn't achieve. I'm madly in love with you and you only.” she continued, more softly.
“That's a good thing too.” Carina smiled brightly, resting her head on Maya's neck and pulling her closer to steal her one more kiss.
As soon as they pulled away from the kiss to catch some air, Maya whispered something that made Carina's heart skip a beat.
“E non nasconderti con le battute, non mi sconcentrare, Stiamo a vedere dove possiamo arrivare E ridiamo insieme che ridiamo sempre, sempre, sempre”
“I thought you only learned it by heart” Carina said, eyes getting watery but the will to smile much stronger than the one to cry.
“I learned it so that I could understand all the words and why it meant so much to you” Maya admitted, Carina's smile growing wider and wider.
“And I also wanted you to know another thing...” Maya added.
“Tell me” Carina replied, moved and curious at the same time.
“You know that line that goes “Senza tutta questa fretta mi ameresti davvero?” she asked, and after getting a light nod in approval, she went on “Well, the answer is yes, I'd love you even if the world would never come to an end, 'cause I'll never get tired of loving you.”
“Bella I-” Carina tried to speak, but her voice cracked a little “You're amazing. You're probably the best thing that has ever happened to me.” she added.
“Probably?” Maya asked, furrowing her eyebrows, trying to sound offended.
“Yes, because I know that what we can make together, our story, our love, will always get better, day by day. Us is definitely the best thing that has ever happened to me” Carina explained, caressing the blonde's jaw.
“Mmm... you get away with it for tonight Dr. De Luca” Maya teased.
“Did I?” Carina teased back.
“Yeah, even though I think that, as it is midnight, we should start making the best of our next day from its very beginning” Maya smirked.
“Well, if you put it that way...” Carina grinned, pulling Maya towards their bedroom, knowing that she would always find the solution to every doubt and fear of hers in those deep blue eyes, that spoke nothing but unconditional love, which she was wholeheartedly willing to reciprocate.

The sun was shining and the birds were chirping. For April, it was surprisingly sunny and warm; there were no clouds in sight. It was perfect weather for the special event that was to take place today because in a few short hours, Maya and Carina's son would walk across the stage at his graduation ceremony. He would graduate from one part of life, and walk onward to a new adventure in life. The child they argued on conceiving for years would adjust his cap, straighten his too-big gown and put on a brave smile before stepping out for the crowd.
His three biggest supporters besides his moms, would be cheering the loudest from their designated seats in the third row, six seats in from the aisle. Non-biological cousins who were raised as his siblings because the young boy didn't have any "real" ones. He was his moms' one and only miracle. But Andy and Sullivan's kids—two girls and a boy—were all the love he needed. Emilia had done her walk years before; she was six years older than her cousin. The twins, Clara and Tanner were closer to his age, but still two years older. For their cousin’s graduation though, the trio were on their best behaviour and had put on their fanciest clothes.
Carina wiped her eyes and Maya moved a hand behind her wife's back to pat her lightly. She had tears in her own eyes yet felt the need to keep it together. Sullivan was put in charge of video-taping, as he was the least likely to get emotional and cry. Andy leaned over to Maya and whispered, "I cried when all three of their names were called."
Maya nodded. She remembered having to console her best friend about her own kids growing up before, and now it was finally Maya’s turn. She had never been prouder of her son until this moment. He had overcome so many mountains but those never stopped his short legs. He just kept climbing, more often than not with a smile on his face. Soon, people began to shush one another, as the announcer walked across the stage with a microphone in hand. The ceremony was about to begin!
“Good afternoon everyone. My name is Georgia Davis, and I am so happy you could join us today.” Pause for a polite smattering of applause. “While we know how anxious you are to watch your not-so-little ones walk across the stage, we ask for your patience as we read through their names. This is one of our largest classes yet to graduate. Let’s give our kids a huge round of applause!”
This time the clapping wasn’t forced and nearly deafened the room. After waiting for the noise to settle down, Ms. Davis began to read down her list. Maya and Carina’s son would be near the top, as his hyphenated last name gave him the alphabetical advantage. Bishop came before DeLuca in the alphabet, which was one of the reasons Maya’s last name was first on his birth certificate. For Andy and Sullivan’s kids, they had decided whose last name went first the same way; Herrera won out over Sullivan.
"Andrew Bishop-DeLuca." Maya snapped her attention back to the stage, stopping her day dream. She couldn’t believe she almost missed the moment her son walked out because she was thinking about last names of all things! The teacher smiled and began clapping. Seconds later, a young boy walked across the stage, head held proudly. He had Carina’s brown hair, blue eyes like Maya and walked just like the man he was named after. He was every bit as trouble as the late Andrew DeLuca as well, but just as kind too. Sometimes, Maya knew that it hurt Carina to watch their son embody someone Carina had grown up alongside. Though they both wouldn’t change it for the world, because their child was still unique in his own way.
"Little Andy's all grown up," the real Andy said. Maya and Carina's son had been named after Carina's deceased brother and dubbed with the nickname "Little Andy" after Maya's best friend. It fit him perfectly because some of his aunt’s fiery personality had rubbed off onto him. Whenever he sassed his moms, they blamed it on Andy.
In the middle of the stage, Andrew turned and waved at his family, ignoring the clear instructions he had been given at home to shake the teacher’s hand and not look for his moms. Everyone laughed though, and both Maya and Carina were too proud to be upset. The teacher was ready for this, and gently placed his scroll in his hands, and directed him off stage. Sullivan smiled over from his seat farther down the row; he had gotten the whole thing on video.
After Andrew’s turn, his row of supporters sat quietly and just simply watched everyone else. Georgia Davis had been right when she said this was the largest class in a while, as a total of thirty two graduates crossed the stage. When at last everyone had gone, and many parents were crying, Ms. Davis returned and thanked everyone for coming. More speeches and awards would be given out later. It was now time for refreshments and a chance to stretch after sitting for so long.
Outside, Carina was still sobbing quietly against Maya's shoulder. "We're gonna be empty nesters soon! I can't believe it,” the Italian woman said sadly.
Maya rolled her eyes. She totally supported her wife's emotions today of all days, but calling them “empty nesters” was being a little dramatic. "Babe, he's only graduating from preschool. He starts kindergarten in September, and will be with us for at least another fourteen years. We'll be okay." She had to hold in a chuckle, as she wrapped an arm around Carina.
"Only fourteen years! That'll pass in seconds! We should've had more kids!" Carina wailed, while Maya refrained from telling Carina that having Andrew almost killed her and that another child wasn't going to be possible. Like ever.
Andy sidled over and chose to make matters worse by saying, "I've only got twelve years left with the twins, in that case. And ten with Emilia." Maya's best friend looked like she was going to cry as well, and Maya couldn't handle two crying women, so she had to do something. Quickly. So she grabbed both of their hands and forced them to look at they're not-so-baby-like babies. The Fantastic Four—a cheesy nickname dubbed for all their kids—were now playing on the mini playground. Tanner, who took his role as an “older cousin” very seriously, was helping Andrew climb the jungle gym. Emilia and Clara were running around, probably scuffing up their shoes in true Herrera-Sullivan kid fashion. Sullivan was standing nearby, a grim expression on his face. He now had three headstrong women living in his house and sometimes it was almost too much to bear. But he loved them and his son more than anything else in the world.
Sullivan noticed them watching and waved, a smile lighting up his entire face when he saw his wife. Maya still sometimes wondered how her best friend and the ex-battalion chief managed to get together despite their odds at first. One look at the chemistry between them would answer all ones' questions. They were just made for each other. Sullivan was back to being Fire Chief Sullivan, a title he most definitely hung over Andy's head. Andy had finally made Captain at Station 19 four and a half years prior. Maya stepped down completely by her own accord when Carina got pregnant; having a family meant more to her than any title, now. It was a good thing she stepped down as well, because Carina was hospitalized for nearly five months and someone had to take care of Little Andy at home that entire time.
Andy waved back at her husband, and left Maya and Carina to go stand beside him. Carina was calming down, thankfully, and stared at the big, blue sky above. She rested her head on Maya’s shoulder, even though the blonde was shorter, and sighed. Maya gently reached up to wind her fingers around Carina’s curls. Her wife had once said that was calming, so Maya did it often now. They stood together, thinking about different things probably, but under one general consensus; their son was growing up way too fast. It seemed like just yesterday they were holding him together in the Labour and Delivery wing of Grey-Sloan Memorial. That was before Carina began hemorrhaging and needed lifesaving surgery, of course. But the two moms had had two peaceful hours with their new baby. Together, as a family of three. Maya had looked at her son and thought, so this is what unconditional love is. She had sworn she would love her son for whatever he accomplished, no matter how big or small. She wouldn’t push him to the point of abuse and yell at him if he came second. She would love his other mom more than the world, and make up for all the pain her parents had put her through. Speaking of her parents, Maya’s mom asked for a picture of Andrew today, as she wasn’t exactly invited to the ceremony. Technically anyone could come, but Maya had specifically told her family that it was “parents only” and just left out the fact that Andy, Sullivan and their kids had attended for Andrew. Although Andrew didn’t even care that his grandparents weren’t present; all that mattered to him were his cousins.
“Andrew, Mommy wants to get some pictures of you. Is that okay?” Maya asked, taking Carina with her as she headed over to the jungle gym where the kids were playing. Carina pulled out her cellphone and handed it to Maya, who was ready to capture whatever smile Andrew gave them. Sometimes he was silly, especially around the twins.
Maya’s reply was a fit of giggling from the kids. She raised an eyebrow at them but apparently didn’t come across stern enough. Andy ended up clearing her throat, which caused Emilia to smarten up. She prompted her siblings to listen and Tanner nudged Andrew, who guiltily turned to his mom. He was only four, though, so it wasn’t too much of a surprise that he took longer to listen.
“Do you want us in the picture Auntie Maya?” Emilia asked, gesturing to herself and her siblings.
“Of course.” Maya let them all strike a pose in front of the playground. She clicked away and let Carina try to make them laugh behind her. Sullivan put an arm around his wife, and they just watched the four kids goof off. After the candid moments of sorts, Maya did get Andrew to pose with a proper smile on his face. The twins ambled over to their parents and though they were getting too big to be carried, Andy held Tanner on her hip while Sullivan scooped up Clara. Emilia stood in front of them and they looked ready for a picture. Maya also seemed to think so, and turned the camera on them. “Smile!”
The Herrera-Sullivan’s smiled like their lives depended on it. “Want me to take pictures of you three?” Andy offered, putting Tanner down.
Maya handed her phone over in answer. “Do you want to sit on my shoulders, Bambino?” That was another one of Andrew’s nicknames, dubbed by his Italian mother. Maya was doing her best to learn Carina’s dialect but still could barely keep a basic conversation. Ten year old Emilia was better than her Auntie Maya, and Italian was just one of the four she was learning. Besides English, all the Herrera-Sullivan kids had been taught Spanish. The twins were just starting German and Italian, while Emilia was half fluent in both. It amazed Maya how quickly kids could pick up another language. Andrew was even interested in Italian, though it was mostly because the twins were learning it. He was a bit of a copycat at four years old.
Andrew held out his arms for his mom to pick him up. Maya hoisted her son over her head and he let out a giggle. Carina smoothed down his small collared shirt and straightened his pants, before turning towards the camera. They all smiled really big as Andy snapped picture after picture. As image after image was taken, Maya couldn’t help but wonder where she would be right now if she hadn’t changed her mind about kids. It had taken quite a lot of convincing from her Italian wife—plus babysitting Emilia and the twins constantly—before Maya felt like she was ready to become a mother. Craning her neck to look at Andrew now, everything made sense. Everything had worked out and Andrew was perfect. Of course Maya was being biased because he was her son, yet she couldn’t help it! It was a parent’s right to think their child was perfect even though sometimes they did things that drove them crazy.
Andrew had a habit of copying everything someone said, for either three sentences or three hours. It was very aggravating and Maya had accidentally raised her voice at him a couple times. He also refused to pick up toys—cancelling his cousins coming over was the only thing that made him do chores at this point. But those were small things and they were part of growing up. Heck, Maya knew she did things that probably drove her wife and son crazy. Maybe by the time Andrew graduated high school, their bad habits would be gone. One could only hope.
“Should we head back to our place now?” Maya asked, pocketing the cellphone Andy returned to her. The families had planned for a sleepover with all the cousins plus ice cream and more treats at home. They only lived a ten minute drive from the preschool.
The happy screams that followed were enough. Andy, Sullivan and their kids left first, giving Maya and Carina a moment alone with just Andrew. Carina didn’t say anything, but enveloped Andrew in a hug, that he returned with a smile on his face. “I’m so proud of you, Bambino. Mamma loves you.”
“Mommy loves you too.” Maya crouched down and opened her arms for a group hug. “We are both so proud of you, Andrew. We always will be. You can always count on us to love you for whoever you become.” Together Maya and Carina would fix the mistakes their own parents made and teach their son acceptance and kindness no matter what. It was only right.
Andrew pulled away from the hug and cupped his moms faces in his hands; first Carina, then Maya. “I love you Mamma. I love you Mommy.” Pause. “Now can we go eat ice cream and play with my cousins?”
Both of his moms let out a laugh. “Yes sweet boy, we can. Today is your day! Are you excited to start Kindergarten in the fall?” Maya got Andrew all buckled up and then began the drive towards home.
“Sorta. Tanner says it’s fun. Clara doesn’t like art but I like art!” Andrew informed them. “I didn’t ask Emmy yet. It’s gooder than fifth grade I bet. Uncle Sully says he’s too old to remember Kindergarten, even though I asked him.” In the front passenger seat, Carina snickered. Sullivan hated the fact that people called him ‘Sully’, especially attached to something as endearing as ‘uncle’. Jack Gibson had taught all the firestation kids what to call everyone to get under their skin just a little. Ever since Andrew had heard his Uncle Sullivan’s nickname, ‘Sully’ was the only name he used. While Sullivan was chagrined about it, Andy loved her nephew for using it to bug her husband.
From the driver’s seat, Maya replied, “I’m sure it is buddy.” In the rear-view mirror, Maya looked at her son and smiled. He was looking more like Carina every day, just with blue eyes. Carina was biologically related to Andrew, conceived with the help of a sperm donor. But he was just as much Maya’s as he was Carina’s, and shared more personality traits with her than his ‘Mamma’. He was smart and caring and worked hard for the most part; just like Maya. He was handsome and sweet and loved life, just like Carina. Though preschool graduation was big, high school graduation was going to be bigger.
Like Andy said before, in eight years Emilia would graduate high school. In twelve years, the twins would follow suit. And Andrew would bring up the rear fourteen years from now. Each time all four adults would cry and wish their babies stayed little for just a while longer. They would marvel over what the kid was like as a baby, as a child and as a teen. Comparing who they were before, and who they had become. Maya knew she wasn’t ready to think about Andrew’s future past Kindergarten, but sometimes she wondered.
Whatever he did with his life, he would be good at it. He would do his best and smile and try to get better no matter what. That was something good Maya had passed on to him. Andrew Bishop-DeLuca was a force to be reckoned with and everything he would one day overcome, would only make him stronger. Though what would never change, would be the undying love and support of his moms. Of his cousins and aunt and uncle. Friends he would meet along the way. Maybe a partner down the road. Andrew was going to love and be loved, that was something Maya was certain about. Even if he was only four years old.
The two families would cheers later, with ice cream cake forks and a small sip of champagne for the adults. They would congratulate Andrew and give him hugs and advice for the future. His cousins would tell him all they could remember about Kindergarten, and Uncle Sully would claim he couldn't remember his days in school, then come up with some crazy tale about his life that had everyone in awe but also giggling. Andy would reminisce about her own kids’ graduations in the past and those to come in the future. Carina would cry more tears and Maya would brush them away like she always did. Life would go on, and things would be okay as long as they remembered they would always have each other.
To new beginnings and new adventures with love always guiding the way.

AN: draft 7 of 49. This was a rough draft of a follow up to Plaything which can be read here. Never finished it or looked at this again until right now. It had potential.
“You wanna tell me why you’re in protection?” Angel looked down at Nicole. “Come on, you have to be pretty important to be dragged to the club for protection.”
Nicole looked up at him before shrugging slightly. “My dad was a power player. He got killed and I saw who did it and now I need to be protected while it’s all sorted out.” She shook her head. “Not how I wanted to cross paths again with you.”
He sighed and nodded. “Look, I enjoyed what we did, I loved it, but we can’t let anyone around here know that this isn’t our first time meeting. Especially not Nestor because he’s crazy as fuck.”
“He’s harmless,” she rolled her eyes as she glanced around. “Professional in public eyes, alright. I can do that.” She tilted her head to look at him again. “So, an outlaw huh?” She pulled on the front of his kutte. “Figures as much. It all makes sense, especially the tattoos and the bike.”
“Yeah well you’re not some saint, freaking daughter of the cartel.” He groaned. “I really do have a type, bad girls.”
“I’m fun,” she smiled. “I’m a lot of fun. So, any place we can sneak off to? Might as well do something fun to kill some time.”
Nestor stalked towards the pair. “Ven aqui Colel, habla conmigo por favor.” He looked at Angel. “If she starts trying to bribe you to let her escape, call me.” He held out a card. Right now, Colel.”
Nicole followed after the man. “Call me Nicole. Why do I even have to be protected? What is this club gonna do? They don’t know me, they won’t give up their lives to protect me.”
“My brother is dead, your dad is dead, your mom is dead. You could’ve been dead too.” He cupped her face. “I don’t have kids of my own but you’re the closest thing to it. I would rather you be close and with the club than with me and in more danger.” He kissed her head. “Please, I don’t want to have to plan another funeral, just cooperate and make it easy for me to protect you my love.”
She nodded slowly before hugging the man. “I love you and I will try not to give them shit although, I know I can bribe that Angel character, a six pack and he’ll hand me the keys to escape.”
“That is why you’re being protected by that guy, Riz.” He smirked. “He’s not as gullible as Angel.” He shrugged. “He’s also the only one with space to take you in, you’re going to be okay, I promise. Have I ever lied to you?”
“There was that one time that you went to jail and then you came home you said you were at university.” She chuckled. “That was a lie.”
Nestor smiled. “I’d never lie to you about anything important, like your safety.” He shook his head. “It’s only for a little bit and you’ll be free to go home or we’ll set you up in a condo out here. Make sure you are ready.”
She sighed and nodded slowly as she chewed on her bottom lip. “I’m strong, una Guerrera Maya.” She smiled. “Don’t call me Colel, I don’t want these guys around here thinking it’s okay because only you can call me that.”
“I’ll call you Colel when I want,” he hugged her briefly. “Also no damn fights, too old and too pretty.”
“Yeah, yeah.” She grinned. “I love you, just relax a bit. Do not falter.” She shook her head. “Oceteva’s are strong, we’re to be feared. Even though, I don’t see how the braids scare anyone.”
“People underestimate me because of the braids but I’ll still kill them.” He smiled proudly. “Remember you’re going with Riz, not anyone else unless it’s Bishop or Taza. None of the younger guys, don’t trust them with you.”
Nicole have a single nod. “I got it, Riz and not anyone else.”
.
.
.
“So, I’m bored.” Nicole looked at Riz and smiled. “May I braid your hair?”
Riz looked at the young woman before shaking his head slightly. “No you may not braid my hair. I like it the way it is. Don’t you have a phone to keep you busy? That’s what your generation is all about.”
She rolled her eyes. “Yeah but it’s new because my uncle thought I’d be tracked. I got his number in it and that’s about it.”
He shrugged. “Download a game or make friends with some of the girls around here.”
Nicole groaned as she looked at her phone. “Here I was thinking you’d be a cool one with your Latino Uncle Jesse vibes.” She shook her head. “I’m gonna just be around, mingling.”
Riz scoffed as he looked at the young woman. “You’re old enough to find your own fun. I offered up a room for you.” He smiled. “I have way better hair than Uncle Jesse.”
“You’re so right, I am old enough,” She looked back at her phone. “Forget I’m even here.” She moved back towards the guest room before slipping inside and closing the door behind her. Dropping onto the bed, she pulled her shoes back on before turning the TV on and up to a believable volume. “Peace out boring ass fucker.” She slid the window open before looking out of it, nothing she hadn’t done before.
She expertly climbed out of the window, dropping to her feet with a slight thud. “Bingo.”
“Not so fast,” Angel looked at Nicole. “Why are you sneaking out?”
“I cant use the front door,” she shook her head. “Why are you here? It’s boring.”
“It’s a brothel,” he eyed her carefully and smirked. “I’m sure you could’ve found one to mess with.”
Nicole shook her head as she started walking away. “I’m not sticking my mouth on community pussy.” She looked at her phone. “Just gotta get somewhere that a car service can pick me up. I’m not staying here.”
“You sound like a brat,” he moved to her before grabbing her waist and roughly pulling her back against him. “Easy way or the hard way?”
“Hard please,” she smirked. “Can’t we just let me go for a few hours.”
Angel tossed her over his shoulder and smacked her ass roughly. “I have so many things I want to do with and to you but I ain’t letting Riz get his balls cut off by Nestor because you catted off.”
“Listen, he’s boring, I don’t know what he does for your club but he’s boring,” she shook her head. “Angel, don’t do me like this.”
He walked into the house. “Riz! One of your girls was running off, caught her.” He shook his head. “When the time is right, I got you.”
Riz rounded the corner and stalled. “Jesus, thanks Angel. I got your usual for you. You know her room.”
He set Nicole to her feet. “Thanks man.” He nodded. “Nicole, nice seeing you again.”
Nicole rolled her eyes as she moved up the stairs and towards the guest room. “Fuck you Angel.”
Angel looked at the brunette. “You wish.” He winked at her. “Escaping here right now is like someone escaping jail the first night, too risky.”
She shook her head. “Whatever, have fun.” She walked into the guest room and dropped on the bed. “Fuck this place.”
“Colel,” Miguel tapped one the brunette’s leg. “Wake up, we need to have a quick talk.”
Nicole rolled over before sitting up slowly. “Only Nestor can call me that.” She shook her head. “But what’s up? Is he okay?”
“Yes, Nestor is fine, he had to go across the border, he told me to check in on you because you didn’t answer your phone and Riz didn’t either.” He smiled. “I see that you’re fine and that your phone is on silent. How was your sleep?”
“I don’t know if you know but we’re in a brothel, a proper whorehouse,” she shook her head. “I rather risk getting decapitated than spend another night here. Can I crash with you Mikey?”
He chuckled. “Only Nestor can call me that. I’ll see about putting you up in a condo instead. Just have the prospect and a few others drop in on you.”
“Will he be okay? He’s my only family I got now.” She looked at him. “Without him, I don’t even know what I’d do. He’s been more of a dad to me than my own. I used to make my abuela braid my hair to match his.”
He smiled. “He’ll be fine. I’m your family too you know. He’s a brother to me, I love and respect him. He talks about you every single chance he gets. Even has your picture in his jacket pocket every single day. He’ll lay his life down for you without a second thought.”
She nodded slowly. “Yeah, I know. Thanks for checking in on me, if you talk to him before I do, tell him I could use a change of scenery. I’ve learned way too much in just a single night here. Way too much.”
Miguel nodded as he stood up and smiled. “It’s been a pleasure and I’ll see about a condo for you Nicole. Keep your spirits up. We’ll get vengeance for your parents.”
.
.
“Nicole,” Angel walked into the condo and smirked before glancing back at his brother. “Leave it to her to be put up in something this fucking nice.”
EZ shrugged as he closed and locked the door behind him. This wasn’t his favorite thing to do but at least he wasn’t in any immediate danger and he was sure it was only a matter of minutes before Angel would be pushing him out the condo to spend alone time with Nicole. “Taza could’ve just sent you to check on her. I’m sure you’d be thorough about it.”
“What?” Nicole walked out of the bedroom, a towel wrapped around her as she looked at the men. “Oh, hey guys. You bring the snacks?”
“Yes,” Angel dropped the bag on the coffee table. “Moving on up, brothel to a condo.”
She nodded as she trailed her fingers through her hair. “Friends in high places. I would not mind being a mistress to Miguel. I think that would work well for me.”
“I could see him having a mistress but it would not be you,” EZ shook his head. “You’d be too headstrong.”
“Submissive.” She grabbed the pack of sour punch straws out of the bag. “It’s the name of the game, you have to play submissive to a man like that in bed otherwise it won’t work. Headstrong in the streets, his little slut in the sheets. Win, win. Am I right?” She smiled at the man. “Make yourselves at home.”
Angel nodded slowly. “She’s right, she’d have to be submissive in bed for it to work out. I however, think you would be better suited playing with me and ignoring Miguel all together. Who knows, he may be a sissy in the bedroom. You’d have to peg him.”
“I’m open minded, I don’t kink shame, unless you have a kink for being shamed then I’m all for degrading you and making you feel less than human,” She shrugged. “Look at your brother blush, he’s getting uncomfortable. What? Do you just like vanilla sex? That’s so boring.”

Love Is Enough
Surrera and Station 19 family multi-chap | Rated T | Canon-compliant
*spoilers for season 4 of station 19*
A/N: we all knew I was going to write a fic about the s4 finale after it ended the way it did. I am very upset at the writers for portraying Sullivan in the way they did—they did him dirty 110%. anyways, that’s where I come in with a fix-it fic. while all events that took place in the finale did happen prior to the start of this fic, that’s where similarities end. this is how Surrera makes it back to each other and how Sullivan makes it up to the team. also cute marina scenes because they’re married now (the only good part of the finale)
You can read this work on ao3 as well ; Prequel fic for Code Red

Chapter 1 - I Don't Know How
Andy was beginning to regret sleeping on the couch. When she had moved into Sullivan’s place after their marriage, she wasn’t so sure about a brown leather couch that had stiff rectangle sides. It turned out to be a good couch for movie watching and pretty sturdy for sex, but sleeping was a whole different story. Especially after seven days of this.
Sullivan—her husband but she had resorted to calling him only by his last name when she was mad—had told her that she could sleep in their bed and that he’d take the couch. But Andy was too angry to accept any pity from him. She could barely look at him, and wished she could just sleep at the station. However, with everything happening, the station was worse than sleeping in the same house as him. A traitor to her, her station 19 family and most of all to her best friend Maya. While it was out of respect for her best friend that she was angry at Sullivan, she was also just pissed off that he would try yet again to move up the ranks fast. Who on Earth ever thought that was a good idea? Clearly not Sullivan, because if he had stopped that thought for a goddamn moment, he wouldn’t have tried to swoop in and take Maya’s job.
“Stupid vulture,” Andy muttered under her breath, as she rolled over two inches and ended up off the couch. He was vulture-like; swooping in and stealing something that wasn’t his. Vultures ate dead animals on the sides of roads and Sullivan moving in after Maya’s captaincy job went up in flames, was really no different. Yes, Andy quite liked her new comparison of her husband to a vulture.
Unfortunately, Sullivan walked downstairs at that moment to see her smirking. “Something funny?” He asked, in the husky voice that he used only in the morning before his coffee. Ugh, she needed to take her mind off that immediately.
“No.” Andy refused to meet his gaze. Picking up the blanket she had stolen off their bed, she moved to climb the stairs. “I am going to take a shower and get ready. You better be out of this house by the time I return downstairs.”
Sullivan sighed. He had tried for the past week to try to get his wife to hear him out, but she wasn’t having it. He knew how stubborn and headstrong she was, although he never thought she would ever use it for longer than a couple hours on him. After day two, Sullivan found out he was very wrong. So he just begrudgingly agreed to whatever she told him. “Alright. You do know we could drive together? Save money on gas.”
“There is no way I’m sitting in the same car with you for the twenty minute drive to work. I can barely be in the same room as you for two.” With a final swish of her hair over her shoulder, she climbed the stairs and slammed their bedroom door behind her.
Sighing louder this time, Sullivan poured himself a coffee and leaned against the kitchen counter to drink it. He could hear the water start upstairs and he wished that he and Andy weren’t fighting. For reasons other than sex, of course. But his mind couldn’t help but wander because on a regular day he would’ve chased her to the bathroom and had his way with her. Clearly that wasn’t going to happen for a very long time now. Knowing he had better be gone by the time Andy got out of the shower, Sullivan quickly downed his coffee, grabbed his keys, wallet and phone, then left wondering if it was always going to be like this. He sure hoped not.

When she emerged from the shower in a cloud of steam, Andy listened at the door for movement and wondered if Sullivan had actually left or not. She stepped outside of the bedroom but was met with silence. Andy silently thanked her husband for leaving; he had finally taken the hint that she didn’t want to hear his excuses. What he had done was unforgivable, and frankly Andy didn’t know if she would ever be able to look at him the same way. He really thought that it would be possible to justify his actions after everything that happened. Maybe Maya losing her job had been inevitable, yet it was not inevitable for Sullivan to volunteer himself for the captaincy position.
Andy thought she knew her husband. She thought she knew the man she had fallen in love with. While she understood how being demoted had affected him, mentally and physically, that did not mean he could go and take Maya’s captaincy job. When she had found out what he did, there had been so much yelling and screaming, Andy was surprised the neighbours didn’t call over wondering what the hell was going on. Her behaviour at the wedding was two days after what happened, and she was still steaming with anger.
Now, Andy was mad. But she wasn’t upset so much as disappointed. Yeah, that was what she felt. Disappointment. Nearly everyone she knew had been flabbergasted to say the least, that she had married the battalion chief after dating him in secret for a few months. Heck, Andy was a bit surprised herself. Yet Maya Bishop had stuck by her side and congratulated her about her marriage, even when the rest of the station freaked out. Travis and Vic had calmed down soon enough, though Jack seemed to be the most judgmental. Rightfully so, as Andy had turned down Jack’s proposal ages ago but accepted Sullivan’s when it was even more of a surprise. That didn’t mean Andy hadn’t been a bit hurt about it, and she had even ranted to Maya about everyone’s reactions later that night. Maya and Andy had had their rough moments—what friendship didn’t, was the real question—although in the end they were there for each other. They stuck up for each other, and they stood beside one another. Andy agreed with Maya’s call that day with the young boy who needed to get to a hospital as fast as possible. In the same situation, Andy would’ve done the same thing. She had been very tempted to tell Fire Chief McAllister that fact herself. Fear of losing her own job held her back at the time but now she wanted nothing more than to storm his office and tell him just what she thought.
Ugh, he just makes me so mad! Andy thought, slamming down her hairbrush. There were tangles in her curls still, yet she couldn’t be bothered to get rid of them. Instead she twisted her hair into a low bun and threw on some clothes. Time to face another day of work. Maybe she would go see Maya afterwards, and share her new nickname for Sullivan with her. At least that might make her smile. Maya could use all the love she could get right now, although luckily Carina was there to put her wife through the motions everyday…

“Do you want me to go over there and punch him?” Carina asked, pacing up and down the short hallway between their living room and bedroom. “Because I will, and I don’t think he wants to hear an Italian woman screaming at him alongside the stinging blow to the face.”
Maya tried to smile to let her wife know that she was thankful for the sentiment, but everything was just too fresh to make a joke about. “No. I don’t want that. Plus what would Andy say?”
Carina’s eyes narrowed, then she relaxed them and the corners of her mouth turned up. “I heard Andy’s been arguing with Sullivan non-stop at the station. Even giving him the silent treatment. Like she said the other day, she’s on your side. So I personally believe she’d thank me if I decided to punch her husband.”
“Haha.” Maya finally laughed even though inside she felt like crying. It had been five days since she had lost her job. Lost her standing as captain and the respect it had built. She had been the first captain of Station 19, and frankly one of the first captains of the SFD. And for what, to be demoted back to firefighter for a small protocol issue? Damn, well clearly someone had it out for her from the beginning.
It made her feel a little bit better, though, to know that Andy was on her side. She could easily have taken her husband’s but she chose her best friend’s side. That was some dedication. Maya just hoped Andy and Sullivan’s marriage would be okay. She remembered making comments about their marriage on her own wedding day and how perfect they were. Little did Maya know at the time, Andy and Sullivan were fighting behind closed doors about his choice to swoop in and attempt to steal Maya’s job.
At this point, she didn’t even know what was going on at the station. Maya hadn’t been back to work since she got demoted, mainly because she had planned to take time off after her wedding. She and Carina couldn’t travel anywhere due to COVID restrictions, but they had planned to lounge around and have sex all day long. So much for those plans. It was yet another thing Maya was sorry about, and would need to make up for in the future. Luckily Carina didn’t seem to have a problem with their plans being cancelled. She preferred to play the game of “what other way can I make Sullivan miserable” every minute. Even though Maya knew Carina wouldn’t follow through with any of them, some of the things she thought up were sort of clever. The answers ranged from filling his turnout boots with lego bricks, to kicking him in the shins; both things Maya had thought about doing the day after she found out her verdict.
While Maya wasn’t anywhere near ready to forgive Sullivan, she certainly wasn’t as angry with him as Carina was. She was hurt and confused, but not angry. Which surprised Maya, because she normally jumped to conclusions when it came to wrong-doings. Though maybe Maya was growing as a person after this demotion. God, it still hurt to think about it.
Maya swung her feet off the couch and stood up. “I’m going to take a shower,” she announced.
Carina stopped pacing immediately. “Would you like company?”
Sadly, Maya shook her head. “No thanks, babe. But I would love some of the soup you made last night.”
“Okay, I’ll warm some up right now.” Carina quickly came over and wrapped her arms around Maya. “I love you, no matter what. I married you for you and I’m prepared to be here for all of it; the good, the bad and the ugly.”
“I love you too,” Maya said and leaned into her wife’s embrace. Maybe one day things would be okay. But clearly not for a very, very long time.
