💭+Quincies/Espada after the wars

“Goodness... where do I even begin with those?”

A mildly apprehensive Kōtarō couldn’t help but crane his head back a little, chin resting between thumb and curled index after he set down his cup of hot ginger tea. Eyes closed for a few moments so he could concentrate on his answer in relative silence… and with the additional comfort of guaranteed anonymity from the man with the bucket hat sitting across the low table, he was free to speak his mind without judgement or persecution.

When one of his men brought up the topic of Aizen a few days ago, his answer came with a straightforward explanation of his own distaste toward the turncoat with godly ambitions, a common opinion shared among many shinigami within the Gotei 13.

But the Espada and the Quincy, on the other hand… Just sharing his honest opinions on either group would take some time for him to elaborate freely, but both at once? That would take the 13th’s lieutenant a hot minute and a half to properly compile his thoughts.

Then again, there’s some benefit to speaking off the cuff—no second-guessing, just throwing out the first things that come to mind. Ten years still gave him plenty of time to think, even between restoration efforts within the Seireitei, and boy does he have a lot on his mind on these.

Might as well begin with the easy one?

“I guess I’ll start with the Espada. A group of already ultra-powerful Menos-class hollows whose transitions into Arrancar were heightened by the Hōgyoku… and were recruited or coerced into working under Aizen,” Kōta began. “As things currently stand now, I don’t have any particularly strong feelings on the Espada… I’ve said it once before already, but I really don’t think Arrancar are inherently evil. Heck, I’d even go so far as to say that even Hollows aren’t inherently evil, though they are definitely more frenzied by nature in order to feed—only ones who were truly evil as humans get sent to Hell upon death anyway. There’s good and bad among the Arrancar, just the same as us Shinigami, and I would be doing their reclaimed humanity a disservice if I still thought them no different from beasts. They’re people, and like people, all that matters is the kind of person each individual Arrancar chooses to be.”

With that train of thought, Kōtarō blinked to himself once he realized he had gone off on a tangent, then shook his head and downed some warm tea to renew his focus. With a satisfied hum, he resumed his discussion on the main topic of his monologue: the actual Espada, and not waxing philosophical on Arrancar wholesale.

"Anyway, I’m getting off-track, but my point is that I’m not going to condemn the surviving Espada for their past affiliations; once that war was over, the feeling I got was that they wanted to move on from Aizen just as much as we did. After the ex-Captain got them involved in his affairs, only to send them off to die by the hands of other Soul Reapers, they deserve at least that much from us. I won’t pretend I know the new Queen Tier Harribel personally, but she does have the A-OK from a friend (Nelliel) of a friend (Ichigo) of a friend (Captain Rukia) of mine. Overall impression is that she’s leaps and bounds ahead morally over the likes of Barragan Louisenbarn and Aizen himself, so that should count for something, right? My hope is that we can establish some kind of amicable relationship with her new order she’s trying to raise, although I’d imagine she would rather have us leave well enough alone—just so long as we’re not hostile toward one another…”

A wistful sigh followed as the Lieutenant’s thoughts drifted on wishful thinking. It would be nice if the Gotei 13 and the new Queen could found a diplomatic partnership of some kind, wouldn’t it? He personally felt an amicable alliance would only help to better strengthen each side, but even the new kingdom born within the realm of Hollows have little to no reason to trust the Seireitei as is. Then there’s the matter of Central 46, the governing body of the Soul Society, who’d surely have thoughts of their own on such an alliance, and none of them positive. What a shame.

Arms folded unto themselves for comfort as the lieutenant leaned back against the zaisu. His gaze stared off into nothing in particular as he looked up to the shop ceiling.

“...but that’s just how the system works, isn't it? We slay Hollows so they can be reborn into Souls, and so that we can keep preserving the balance between the Soul Society, Hueco Mundo, and the world of the living lest it all comes to an unceremonious end. While I don’t think that ought to apply to fully sentient beings like Arrancar, in a way, I see us slaying Hollows as a mercy. It’s a kindness, really, to end the suffering that consumed them as souls, souls we couldn’t save on time… which is more than I can say compared to how my precursors treated the Quincy.”

And there it is. Kōtarō turned silent at his mention of the Quincy—the polar opposite to his kind, those who he directly and involuntarily fought against in the Quincy Blood War. The relationship between Hollows, plus Arrancar by extension, and Shinigami was a relatively simple one to break down into words. It was an easy regurgitation of hard facts internalized over his century-long career, splashed with his own personal impressions on those who stood at the apex of Hollowkind. Quincy, on the other hand… where could he even begin?

“…I only swing my zanpakutō to slay Hollows. Cutting down humans though—the very people I’m supposed to be keeping watch over and protecting—that’s not what I signed up for, but that’s exactly what I did during that war, isn't it? Even if it was in self-defence, those Soldaten were still humans with lives to live and families to come back to… it’s shameful, when I think about it.”

Gaze narrowed as grim visions of the war returned to the forefront of his mind, then shut firmly with a wince for an expression as Kōta fought those unpleasant memories back.

“A-anyway, right. The Quincy, a race of spiritually empowered humans who fight with reishi manipulation… though I’m guessing you’re asking specifically about my thoughts on the Vandenreich, aren’t you?” This earned the lieutenant a slow nod from his candy shop-owning inquirer. “Well, whereas the Espada were either coerced into joining Aizen, fought for the sake of fighting, or relished at the opportunity to kill Soul Reapers, the Quincy who rallied under Yhwach’s banner differ in that they all shared a justified, nigh-unified hatred towards us. Unlike Aizen and the Espada… the Quincy’s war was a direct consequence of the Gotei 13’s past actions—that much, I understand now. Yhwach only galvanized and weaponized what was already there because of my predecessors.”

The look on Lt. Ryōhei’s face came off as fatigued now—he had a long time to think about this particular subject, with many sleepless nights spent reading and discussing the matter with fellow reapers after the dust settled. “Even if genocide was attempted for the sake of preventing the collapse of all three realms, all in the name of balance again, it’s still genocide, right? Of course retribution was going to follow. Of course they’d want to wipe us out in turn, just as the Gotei 13 tried to do unto them between the first war and the attempted extermination over 200 years ago. Then the second war came, only for Yhwach to dispose of them just as easily once they served their purpose…”

The storm-haired man paused as his own words started to weigh him down. "I feel... awful for them, really. Time and again they’ve been persecuted through no real fault of their own. Quincy don’t exist—weren’t brought into this world—only to die by our hands. I refuse to accept that.” A brief pause, to top off his half-full cup with some fresh tea... only to realize the pot was empty. "Then for their loyalty, the reward many of the survivors wrought was abandonment by their own God-King. There’s no sugarcoating it: the Quincy deserve better. Compassion, aid, pity, whatever; they kept getting robbed at every turn, and then were robbed some more when they’ve had enough and bit back. I don’t care if negotiations in the past fell through—we need to sit down, try again, keep talking, and come up with something of a proper solution for both sides.”

His company noted how Kōtarō’s observations between the Espada and Quincy differed, given he’d only ever fought one of the two himself, and so he piped up with an interesting question. Forgiveness?

“Truth is… I do forgive them, Urahara-san. Really, I do. Impossible as it may seem, even after they’ve slaughtered thousands of our own? Including Yamamoto, Sasakibe, and… and even Ukitake? After everything they’ve done? I honestly forgive them. There’s no point in condemning the remaining Quincy for fighting under Yhwach’s banner once upon a time. What matters is how we survivors—us and them—choose to live our lives in the here and now. Those among the Sternritter who still swear fealty to Yhwach, it’s probably inevitable we’ll come to fight again. There, I can sleep comfortably knowing I’ll raise my blade to try and stop them from trying to pile on more needless sacrifices, and this time, I’ll be ready for them if that happens. Those who just want to live their lives in peace, on the other hand… I’d like to build up a proper rapport with them somehow, if it’s doable, you know?”

A laugh broke from the lieutenant, albeit a sardonic one, as he continued with that line of thought. “Though I’m sure they don’t want to risk making themselves visible to Gotei folk like myself, or would sooner put an arrow through my heart before I’d get the chance to say: ‘Hello, my kind tried to wipe yours out on three separate occasions! What say we forget all that and let bygones be bygones over a good sporting game of shogi?’” Kōtarō even swung his arms together to emphasize his delivering a punchline as though he were a standup comedian, but the wry smile on his face made it clear he wasn’t aiming for laughs.

Ah, his tea grew cold from neglect… and the cup was still half full.

Oh well, down the hatch.

As he drank the last of his tea, Kisuke chanced another question—if there were any Arrancar or Quincy Kōtarō would want to meet himself. An interesting proposition…

“Well… I did hear that Captain Kurotsuchi has a Privaron on standby who specializes in wind manipulation like me? I’d like to meet him sometime, if that’s the case—discuss our craft, see what we can learn from each other and what not.”

A name slipped from the man of science’s lips: Dordoni. The lieutenant of winds nodded and made a mental note of it; the next time he’s over by the Shinigami Research and Development Institute, he’ll ask around.

“As for the Sternritter, at least among those I’ve read about… that’s an easy one. Sternritter T: Candice Catnipp, the Thunderbolt.”

Somehow, his name choice only seemed to amuse the man sitting opposite across the table. The combination of fan raised over his face, a tasteless joke, and a sly smirk got under Kōta's skin immediately.

“H-hey, hey, it’s nothing like THAT! I’m a man of storms and wind, she’s a woman of thunder and lightning—I vibe with her aesthetic is all I’m saying!” Kōta was quick to shoot up onto his knees and slam his hands on the table as he tried to defend himself (he couldn’t help but wonder what kind of crazy weather they could create together, lover of storms he is), but it was a fool’s errand that only spurred Urahara into further laughter at his expense. Oh well.

“SO, as you asked, I shared my thoughts on our former adversaries and then some. Say you keep your end of the bargain and we keep all of this between ourselves?” he huffed, shooting an unimpressed glare toward the man in green, who just set down a new batch of fresh tea for them both with a nod. At least that’s settled.

Kōtarō mulled things over as he sipped on ginger, as he found his mind going back to Ginjō and the words they exchanged then. He had believed in the greater good of the Soul Society for so long, but some of the atrocities his own kind committed had him stop and think sometimes. Even his late Captain set his foot down when he saw one injustice too many with Rukia’s execution 12 years prior, which only made Ryōhei prouder to serve the Thirteenth Division under Ukitake’s name.

The source of all that injustice… the endless suffering of Hollows, the attempted genocides onto the Quincy, the ongoing squalor Souls lived in after believing in the idea of a cozy afterlife…

“…sometimes, I can’t help but wonder,” Kōtarō found himself saying. "How much easier would it be for everyone if we didn’t have to worry about something as arbitrary, impersonal, and cruel as ‘balance’ in the first place?”

Silent Song, Chapter 20

Hello, Loves. Ready for more? I sure am. I’m so excited about where we are right now, what I’m doing with this and proud of the ride this has become. We are looking at a total of 25 chapters but that all depends on how things flow. I do hope you like this one. <3

“Why isn’t it working?” Tony complained as he sat in the overstuffed office chair at the head of the table in the boardroom turned command center, watching as sparks flew through the air, controlled and conjured by the hands of the sorcerer supreme himself.

“It could be any number of magics they are using to try and counter this spell.” The sorcerer finally let his trembling hands fall to his sides, the light and sparks dying out as he gave up working the magic.

“What that means is: He doesn’t know.” Loki offered from his seat. They’d been trying to trace her with various magics for the last few hours and nothing had even shown the slightest hint at working.

“What could they want with her?” Tony’s fingers pounded the table as he thought.

His back was stiff and his joints ached. It was one of the few times he truly felt his age. The way his body complained, creaked and popped with every shift of position, one could easily think he hadn’t left the chair in hours. They would be correct in that assessment. Around him sat those members of the team that were currently not actively hunting for traces of the cult. Thor was seated next to Tony, separating him from the man that he had all but tried to kill numerous times in the last few days alone.

Loki was until recently kept in chains purely for Tony’s peace of mind. Now he simply sat looking almost physically deflated himself. It had been a week of endless, pointless searching and the team as a whole had gotten antsy. Tempers ran hot and quick.

On paper, it could be argued that they had made progress. They had raided more Zealot camps and Hydra bases during the week than they had managed to locate and raid in the past month alone. Each and every member of the team was tired and working themselves into the ground. Not a single one so much as complained about the never ending raids. Each had a driving need to find her, to redeem themselves though they couldn’t say to who.

“They’ve been trying to summon a beast-like god.” Dr. Strange started from his place next to Tony, leaning back in his chair.

“A God cannot simply be ‘summoned’.” Loki snapped.

“Gods like the two of you, no. But perhaps the Zealot’s understanding of what a God is and what you are in reality are not perfectly aligned. What they call a God doesn’t have to be correct by your standards. It only matters that they are trying to summon something powerful.”

“Why do they need to torture people for the summoning?” Tony asked even as his stomach rolled and he tried to put aside the horrors of the bodies he had seen over and over during the week. The Zealots made a policy to kill their captives at the slightest sign of trouble and as of yet, only a small handful had been able to be recovered alive over the course of the week.

Tony wanted nothing so much as to down his drink and pour another. Rather than do so however, he sipped at the amber liquid as the ice clinked in the glass. He was tired and angry. It felt as if he had lost everything again. It was something he didn’t dare say, but he found himself wondering at night if it would have hurt less if Pepper had been taken in Hotaru’s place. Tony wasn’t sure he could believe in a God like so many on earth still clung to but should one exist, Tony surely was damned for having thought such a thing.

On the table in front of them, folders were open and papers spread out. Each folder was found in one of the countless Hydra bases they had raided. It didn’t provide any information as to where she could possibly be but the worn and yellow pages did contain some portions of the magic the Zealots had been trying to work.

Now it was a question if either of the sorcerers could use the information provided to track and locate the cult’s sorcerers. Ideally they would need to locate them when they were not working the magic as the spells called for lives to end during their casting.

They had to find her. They had to save her. They couldn’t be too late.

“These spells all look largely incomplete.” Strange pushed the papers across to Loki.

“Indeed. They keep trying different configurations of the magic trying to prefect the weaving of the spells.” Loki commented, tossing one paper aside.

“You two don’t have to torture someone every time you’re too lazy to walk to the next room.” Tony snapped, “Why do they keep the slaves?”

“I could only begin to guess.” Strange leaned back while speaking as Loki flipped through the papers.

“I believe they are not actually trying to sacrifice anything.” Loki mused.

“Well, in that case they are very bad at ‘not sacrificing’” Tony couldn’t help but try to snark, even now.

“Indeed. I believe I have seen some of this magic before.”

“Where?” Strange asked, always intrigued by the vast amount of magic around him that he had yet to even begin to understand.

“I need to visit the vaults on Asgard.”

“Need I remind you that you are on house arrest.”

“Is maintaining the illusion that you have ever had me under confinement worth risking that the Little Light is in their hands for even a moment longer than necessary?” Loki regarded Tony with a cold stare, they’d been back and forth on the topic all week and he had grown tired of the whole charade. His game was no longer fun. “I will do whatever I must to right this regardless of what you may have to say of it.”

“What did you mean by them not intending to sacrifice?” Dr. Strange drew the conversation back to the more important topic of the Zealots. Loki’s status as ‘prisoner’ had stopped being of interest to him a long ago.

“Perhaps they are using the bodies as a vessel?” Loki offered. “I’d have to research more to be certain.”

“Like those stories Mother used to tell?” Thor was surprised, he’d not thought of such stories in what felt like a lifetime.

“I’d have to look to be sure but perhaps while they think they are trying to create a summoning of an already existing deity from another dimension… I believe this spell is actually trying to accomplish the artificial creation of a God.”

“That’s why they are torturing them...” Strange ran his hand through his hair, pushing back portions that had fallen across his forehead as he had sat bent over the table reading.

“Care to share with the class?”

“Think back to when we found her, Stark.” Strange started, “Did you see the state any of the captives were in before they were killed?”

“I was a tad too busy to bother with sightseeing.”

“They seemed vacant.” Strange corrected, not commenting on the snark as if he hadn’t heard it. They didn’t have time for such things. “It was as if their mind was already dead, leaving behind what was nothing more than a living shell of a person. The few captives we’ve been able to save so far are much the same with perhaps one or two exceptions.”

“A vacant vessel that could in theory be filled with the spirit of a newly created being.” Loki concluded. “Assuming my theory is correct. I’ll be going to Asgard to verify it but they are missing key portions of the spells needed to stabilize the transition.”

“And that means what?”

“That the beasts are created, exist for a short destroying things before burning themselves out.” Strange added.

“Without a physical form to tether themselves to, they can’t maintain a physical connection with this world and implode on themselves. If I am correct, they are trying to tether the beasts to a vacant body in order to create something similar in power to the likes of Asgardian gods yet dependent on the magic to retain form and thus able to be controlled. As of yet, they’ve not been able to do so hence the bodies being left on the alters rather than being used.”

“That leaves the question, why they keep killing the captives?” Strange pulled a new paper in front of him, splitting his attention between it and the Gods.

“I’d assume they are trying to take advantage of the moment right at death where the body still lives but the soul has left. This is all speculation until I can look into matters further however I’d wager to bet that they are converting the very soul into the final power source to draw the beasts into existence and complete the tie.”

“So magical body snatching.” Tony leaned back as Strange nodded in confirmation.

“In the simplest sense, yes.” Loki closed his eyes and leaned back.

If it wasn’t for the rolling wave of power that emanated from him, one would think the action peaceful. The magic hung thick in the air as once again he reached out with his most keen of senses and tried to find the one that had become most important to him. Her life was already so fleeting, the very thought that these half baked sorcerers could steal what little time he had with her filled him with a dread that reached to the very depths of his soul.

“I’ll research this further, see what I can find. You do the same in Asgard and between the two of us, hopefully we can find a way to trace her as well. These sorcerers have access to magics they don’t fully understand and I need to reclaim it before more damage is done. Assuming, you find that agreeable, Stark?”

The bite in the Doctor turned sorcerer’s voice was clear. He had grown fond over the little mouse, just as quickly as the others had. Strange saw in her the same light the others had seen. She was something to be protected. She was something pure. Yet, she was out of the care of the men he had entrusted her to just the same. He could only hope that she would be found alive.

“Yeah. Whatever we have to do. I just- I want her back.” Tony’s voice was soft as he closed his eyes, momentarily the fire was gone.

“We will return her to you.” Thor promised solemnly, seemingly speaking to Tony yet looking to his brother, double meaning clear.

It felt good to walk to halls of Asgard again. The people whispered, he was a prince returned without so much as a notice to court. Thor didn’t announce any pardoning of his crimes, his mind was occupied with the weight of the missing Light and trying to fulfill his court duties as King as quickly as he could. He wasn’t forgiven in the eyes of the laws of Asgard and so people whispered.

Loki found it hard to care about such things. The click of his boot heels against the solid marble floor gave little doubt to those down the hall that he walked with every ounce of purpose and belonging that he had centuries before. Each turn of the hall, each corridor he knew as well as he knew the back of his hand or the feel of his power resting deep within him. Each stairway was just as he remembered.

It allowed his mind to wonder as he walked. Each click of his heels echoed right along with his thoughts. The whole situation was his fault. He knew that. It pained him but it was the simple truth. If he had just done things the proper way this wouldn't have happened. Yet he didn’t mean to find himself caring for the Little Firefly at all, let alone as much as he did.

It was a waste of time, he knew. He’d even gone so far as to advise Thor against giving his heart to a mortal with such short lifespans before and yet that is the very situation he had found himself in. Without so much as a doubt in his mind, he knew he cared for her. It was far too easy to care for her, to trust her and to let her in.

It wasn’t as if he could court her, as tempting as such an idea was. She would never, could never meet the standards of court. It would be a waste of her short life to train her in the ways of propriety and court manners. Before she could ever hope to have command of the formalities she would have to abide by as a lady of the court and his mate, she would have grown old and her time of passing would be near.

He couldn’t court her. He couldn’t wed her. The most he could ever hope to have her as would have been a momentary reprieve, a short time where he could have a glimpse of what his life could be like if he was anyone else. He could never hope to have a life where he could wed a mate whom he cared for.

No, his life and status meant such was a pleasure he would never have. Forever he would be the second son, not even a son by blood. He had no rights, no claim to lands or title beyond what his king brother would bestow. Until he wed, his status was at his brother’s mercy.

While he had no reason to even think that the power and status he held would be revoked, he was well aware of the constant state of flux that was court affairs. Unless he wished to leave his social and political standing in such an insecure state, he was well aware that he had to pick a mate for her status.

A queen or crown princess with a country he could wed would be ideal. It would grant him status in his own right and solidify relations between the country in question and Asgard. It could bring a rebelling nation into the fold. Who he would take as wife and mate would not be a simple matter of heart. In all reality his heart probably wouldn’t even factor into such a decision.

That was something his King Brother couldn’t fathom to begin to understand. He was a king in his own right and this his status was secured regardless of who he were to wed. With the exception of an uprising or should he willingly abdicate the throne he would always be king until his dying day. It was one of the many ways that the two brothers were so fundamentally different. Thor could afford to wed a woman he loved, regardless of who or what she was and Loki couldn't be sure if doing the same was a risk he could take.

Yet he found himself in a situation where that was something he had no choice but to contemplate. Before he even had a chance to begin thinking about what he wanted, what risks he could afford to take and in what capacity he could have His Light by his side, she was taken from him.

The pain that ripped through his mind as he had tried fruitlessly to budge the hammer, to remove it from him was a vivid memory. If only he could get up, if only he could go and help search for her. If he could leave the tower, if he could just get outside he would have been able to find her. If only he could have gotten outside, he could cover great distance and he would have found her quickly. He could have saved her. It all could have been prevented if he wasn’t trapped. Stuck in place by a cursed hammer that insisted he was unworthy.

All he could do was cast an illusion to save his dignity from the eyes of the tower while he ripped at his hair and yelled at his frustrations. If only he had been more, he could move the damned hammer. He cursed his existence, he cursed his nature. No matter what, he was always less than what he needed to be. If he had been worthy, if he had just be good enough he could have moved the cursed hammer. It wasn’t even a weapon he cared to wield any longer, he simply needed it off his lap.

But he wasn’t good enough. He knew that already, yet he tired and tired. His hands were bloody, nails cracked and chipped from clawing at the hammer. Shifting himself down, trying to move out from under it hadn’t worked. Every time the couch gave a little, the hammer pressed down harder on him as if aware of Thor’s will.

By the time the others returned, he was ready to claw his own body apart. Yet, they didn’t even so much as notice. To them, he looked right as rain. They didn’t even see a hair shifted on his head. With a flick of his power he banished the smears of his blood off the couch and hammer, leaving the only evidence of his activities hidden behind the illusion that covered his body. With measured control, he kept his voice even as they had spoke about their failed search.

Yes, it was his fault but they needn’t know how badly he was already blaming himself. That was something he couldn’t even begin to argue. Statements of his blame were simply brushed aside as if they didn’t matter even as they cut into him more and more each time they were spoken.

He shouldn’t have allowed a kiss to happen when he hadn’t had a chance to formulate a plan. She could never be his mate and wife but he could still find a place for her by his side. He tried to tell himself that he wasn’t truly going to ask to court her before things went out of his control. To do so would be stupid, would put to risk all that he was.

To court her would be to put trust into Thor. He wasn’t going to formally court her, he kept insisting to himself. Tony wouldn’t know the technicalities of court life anyway. Such things wouldn’t need to be spoken of. He could have kept things just how he needed to.

It wasn’t unheard of for men such as he to keep a concubine or a pet as a companion, both while unwed and after having taken a wife. Women hardly ever were permitted the same luxury. He couldn’t imagine casting her aside for another while she still lived and so the distinction wouldn’t have mattered, would it? With a lifespan as fleeting as hers, the least he could do was give her all he could for the short time she would accept him. It would be but a blink of an eye to him and her time would be passed leaving nothing but the memory of her soft acceptance to carry him through the rest of his long life.

So many mistakes had been made during the many long centuries he had already lived but none had he ever regretted more than the words she had heard coming from his own mouth. When he found her, he would tell her the things he should have said. He would say the things he wanted to yell in his panic as he watched tears fell.

He would tell them all what she had come to mean to him. Not a thing would be held back. While he couldn’t promise her anything more than his companionship, his time and affection, he would offer it all to her for so long as she would have it. The only question was, would she still accept him? Or would she finally she the monster he truly was?

It didn’t matter. What mattered most was that she was taken and it was his fault. What mattered most was that he had to find her. What mattered most was that he would find her and return her voice just as he promised.

If so much as a hair was harmed on her head, if so much as a bruise marred her skin he would bring down the true might of his power. No man would be left standing but he would see to it that they had begged him for the release of death before he was through with them. Yes, he knew torture well. Having spent time on the receiving end had taught him more than a few lessons in the art that he would giddily employ.

It was within her archives that he hoped to find answers. If his memory served him right, he could find books on the very creation of the gods. It wasn’t always that they were occasionally born with such innate abilities that made them foundations for the reality of their people.

The first gods were not born but made and Loki found himself needing to know how. Such magic had not been attempted in many lifetimes. To think that human sorcerers were trying to do what could very well be the same magic that gave rise to Asgard’s power was terrifying and intriguing both. Under different circumstances he would even be tempted to allow them to continue just to observe their results over time. However he would not allow His Light to be sacrificed for his curiosity.

Servants brought food and mead when he failed to appear in the dining hall. There was a great celebration being held in another part of the palace, welcoming his King Brother to his home and palace. Nobles would be vying for his favor and the unwed women of the court would be prancing around him in hopes of catching the King’s eye for a spell.

To warm the bed of a king would earn her a notoriety and status in court for now. Yet it was a silly game, all knew when the he took a Queen she would likely send away his past lovers rather than have to look upon their faces. It was a risk the women would take however for hopes that the King would grow fond of them and keep them around or even make her his Queen. At the very least, should he wed and still hold a fondness for her she could hope to be made his mistress and be granted protection from the new Queen.

Loki didn’t care for such trappings and festivities. Though he knew he should be in attendance. Regardless of where his mind and heart was, he should be tending to the duties of court. Yet he couldn’t bring himself to do anything more than hunt for the answers he needed and pray to the norns that he wouldn’t find them too late.

Hotaru was aware that she hurt. The cold seeped into her from the hard ground and it should have felt the same. How dearly she wished she could feel numb. She tried as hard as she could to forget the warmth of her bed. No, it wasn’t hers anymore and it wouldn’t be again. Maybe it never was, if she believed what she was told. It was better if she forgot what it was like to sleep on a soft mattress and wrapped in the warmth of blankets.

It was better if she forgot the way it relaxed her to feel the warmth of the blankets contrasting with the chill that seemed to always be around Loki. It was better if she forgot what it felt like to think she was safe. If she could forget the way Tony smiled at her full of pride when she progressed in her lessons.

If she could just forget the way Loki’s lips felt against hers, maybe her heart would stop hurting so. If she could just forget what it was like to think he wanted her.

They told her that her freedom was just part of their game. That they wanted to see how it would hurt her if she thought she could have a normal life. It was just another game they played with their pets. Just a game, no different than seeing how many times they could slap a spot before the skin split and blood flowed.

Loki had called it a game as well.

Had she ever been free? Were the things Tony had told her truth? Were her memories of the time before real or simply wishful thinking?

God, how she wanted to forget. If they had just killed her that day, if the dagger never pierced the skull of the man maybe that would have been better. If they had never come, she’d never have gotten a taste of what her life could have been like, maybe it would have been better.

It would have been better if she had never seen Tony again. It would have been better to have never left her cage.

If only she could forget. If only the memories would evaporate. If only the heartache would stop. If only.

Tears fell from her eyes, dripping onto the hard ground. How she had any more left to cry, she couldn’t even begin to say. Yet, somehow even now they wouldn’t stop. Maybe, if she cried long enough the memories would seep from her eyes.

Every time she closed her eyes she saw Loki’s face. In the silence she heard his voice. Even as she drew shuttering breaths she could feel the press of his lips against hers and the weight of his hands. The cold steel around her neck left her wishing for the soft cloth of the necklaces Loki had graced her with.

It was better to just forget. Why couldn’t she forget?

Sun sextile Pluto. Research brings rewards. We benefit now from strategy and keeping things to ourselves for the time being. Opportunities to find or renew something we had lost, and to gain some power are available now.

Mars quincunx Neptune. We can feel vaguely discontented and without direction under this influence. The tendency to be careless is also strong now. Poor judgment or laziness can prevent us from realizing our plans.

Saturn trine Uranus. This is a time when we’re more likely to be doing what we enjoy, and enjoying what we’re doing, particularly related to career, work, and life path matters, but extending to other areas of life as well. This can be a time of firsts in the primary structures of our lives. Changes we make tend to be deliberate or calculated, but possibly also quite quick. NOVEMBER 5

The Moon continues its transit of Taurus today until 5:27 AM EST, after which it visits chatty, connected, and flexible Gemini. Mercury enters Sagittarius today and will stay in the sign much longer than its usual three weeks, until January 11th. When Mercury is in Sagittarius, our thinking shifts from a need to plumb the depths of any given situation to the desire to learn about a wide range of topics. Ideals are sought, our thinking is more optimistic, and our faith increases. We are more equipped to believe and to persuade. What is fair and unfair concerns us most now. However, we are not always very precise under this influence. Today, we’re inclined to assert our independence or question our dependence. While the Gemini Moon often prefers light entertainment and conversation, we seek to probe deeply into topics and understand things rather than scratch the surface today as Mercury and Pluto align in declination.

The Moon is void from 4:29 AM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (an opposition to Mercury), until the Moon enters Gemini at 5:27 AM EST.

NOVEMBER 6

The Moon spends the day in curious Gemini, stimulating our desire to connect, share, and interact. We’re not particularly focused with a Gemini Moon, and, in fact, we can be very easily distracted now, but it’s an excellent time to explore our options, gather information, and test the waters. A Mercury-Saturn parallel aspect can help us concentrate, however, and our conversations tend to have a serious overtone. As the day advances, we head towards a semi-square between Mercury and Pluto. This can produce some tension or mental distress and worry. We’re somewhat skeptical or mistrustful under this influence, although if we harness the energy and use it for good, we can develop strategies to get to the bottom of any matter. We might also face some rejection or criticism around the Moon-Saturn opposition this evening.

NOVEMBER 7

Early today, mental pressures or troubles can be unsettling as Mercury and Pluto form a semi-square. We should watch for obsessing over an issue that we can’t or shouldn’t control. The Moon continues its transit of Gemini until 5:40 AM EST, after which the Moon moves through the sign of comfort-seeking Cancer. Venus enters Scorpio today, where it will transit until December 1st. Deeply passionate relations are the focus with Venus in Scorpio. Superficial flirtations and contacts do not satisfy now, as we yearn for “body and soul” contact with someone special that breaks the norms, is intense, and is unforgettable. This is a highly emotional and passionate position for Venus. We look for projects, pleasures, and relationships that consume us. Fears of being too vulnerable or of giving up our own power to others are strong. We’re good at handling money and resources now. There can be disdain for routine today, or circumstances are such that our lives are too chaotic or scattered to be able to focus on our goals. We should watch for sudden abandonment of goals, projects, responsibilities, or commitments now. The Moon’s trine to Jupiter this afternoon is encouraging and generous, while the Moon-Mars square tonight can stimulate tension and impulsive reactions.

NOVEMBER 8

The Moon is in Cancer all day, and we crave secure, familiar settings. Feelings of belonging and safety are what motivate us under this influence. We tend to respond to challenges or stress by retreating or withdrawing under the influence of a protective Cancer Moon, and we are especially concerned with family and close loved ones. We can benefit from the clarity of the Sun-Moon trine this morning and act more holistically and purposefully. Decision-making is improved, although it could be a tad emotion-biased. Our feelings run deep, and we are unafraid to face them, making it an ideal time to get in touch with what motivates us and others. This is a good day for strengthening and supporting others and building trust, although there can be some tension surrounding the Moon’s opposition to Pluto late morning. We’re pleasantly ambitious and motivated as the day advances with the Sun approaching a sextile to Pluto.

NOVEMBER 9

The Moon continues its transit of Cancer until 7:30 AM EST, after which it transits Leo. This morning, the Sun perfects its sextile to Pluto. We may be discovering new ways of looking at problems or life in general. We feel stronger and enjoy the empowered feeling that making changes and improvements brings. Opportunities to find or renew something we had lost, and to gain a stronger sense of personal power, can emerge now. This can be an exceptionally resourceful time when we feel perfectly capable of overcoming obstacles and meeting challenges. There can be an opportunity to rebuild or reform a project and to work on self-improvement. This evening, however, Mars forms a quincunx to Neptune, and we can feel a little stuck – uncertain what we truly want and where to head – until we get in touch with the spiritual or emotional needs we may have been overlooking.

A void of course Moon occurs from 12:15 AM EST, with the Moon’s last aspect before changing signs (a square to Uranus), until the Moon enters Leo at 7:30 AM EST.

NOVEMBER 10

The Moon spends the day in Leo. We are creative, loving, and ready to perform under this influence. This afternoon, the Last Quarter Moon occurs when the Sun in Scorpio forms a square with the Leo Moon. The Last Quarter Moon phase points to a crisis of consciousness. After basking in the awareness symbolized by the full light of the Moon at the time of last week’s Full Moon, we can now sort out what works for us — and what doesn’t — in preparation for next week’s New Moon, when something new is born once again. This is not the best time to start a major project, as the decreasing light of the Moon symbolizes a descent into unconsciousness. We’re heading towards the final Saturn-Uranus trine in a set of three that first began in December, exact tomorrow morning, and we’re in an excellent position to give form to our unusual ideas or make an unconventional set-up work for us.

NOVEMBER 11

A long-term aspect is exact today and is the final in a set of three (this aspect perfected in December 2016 and May 2017): Saturn in Sagittarius forms a trine to Uranus in Aries. We have the opportunity to make changes and progress without sacrificing security and reliability under this influence. We can successfully apply new methods to old projects, or take an original, innovative idea and turn it into a workable plan. There can be breakthroughs, new beginnings and structures in our lives, and success in business, science, and math. There is the ability to combine the progressive with the traditional, and there can be a better understanding between the young and the old. We can be committed yet retain our independence. We might enjoy more freedoms or creative license in the work we do. Educational advances are possible now, and we may be updating our skills and knowledge. It’s an excellent time for updating a business, pursuit, or program. The Moon continues its transit of Leo until 11:42 AM EST, after which the Moon transits Virgo.

Encryption in-transit and Encryption at-rest - Definitions and Best Practices

In the latest few years the world wide web has experienced an exponential growth of hackers, malwares, ransomwares and other malicious software or parties which is constantly trying to find a way to steal our personal data: given this scenario, it goes without saying that securing your data became one of the most important tasks that we should prioritize, regardless of the role that we usually play. The general (and urgent) need to prevent unauthorized access to personal, sensitive and/or otherwise critical informations is something that should be acknowledged by everyone - end-users, service owners, servers administrators and so on: the differences are mostly related to what we need to protect and how we should do that. Needless to say, the act of choosing the proper way to protect our data is often subsequent to a well-executed risk assessment followed-up by a costs-benefits analysis, which is a great approach to help us finding the appropriate technical and organisational measures to implement in our specific scenario. This is also the proper way to act according to the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), as stated in the Art. 32 - Security of Processing: Taking into account the state of the art, the costs of implementation and the nature, scope, context and purposes of processing as well as the risk of varying likelihood and severity for the rights and freedoms of natural persons, the controller and the processor shall implement appropriate technical and organisational measures to ensure a level of security appropriate to the risk Here's a list of the most common technical and organisational measures to ensure the protection and security of the data nowadays: Access control: Protect all physical access to your server, client and/or data rooms with keys, chip cards, walls, lockers, alarms and the likes. Minimization: Ensure that all the authorized parties can access only the data specifically related to their specific tasks and/or authorization without being allowed to see anything else. Integrity: Protect your data from accidental loss, destruction or damage using appropriate countermeasures (fire/flood sensors, Disaster Recovery and the likes). Pseudonymisation: Replace user-related data by random, anonymous blocks of text, so that the owner will still be able to retain the entries (for statistical purposes) and, at the same time, stripping them from any personal info. Encryption in-transit: Ensure that the data is always transmitted using strong in-transit encryption standards (SSL/TLS certificates) and through secure connections: this also applies to any kind of website and web-based service containing forms, login screens, upload/download capabilities and so on. Encryption at-rest: Protect your local data storage units (including those used by servers and desktop & mobile clients) with a strong at-rest encryption standard; ensure that the data stored in SaaS and cloud-based services are also encrypted at-rest. Confidentiality: Prevent unauthorized or unlawful processing by implementing concepts such as separation of concerns & separation of duties, enforcing password policies, and so on. Recoverability: Ensure that all the relevant data is subject to regular backups and also be sure to regularly check them to ensure that the data can be successful retrieved. Evaluation: Submit the whole system to regular technical reviews, third-party audits, adopt an effective set of security indicators, and so on. In this post we're going to talk about two of these technical measures: Encryption in-transit and Encryption at-rest, leaving the other topics for further articles.

Introduction: the Three Stages of Digital Data

The first thing we should do is to enumerate how many "states" digital data can actually have, and be sure to understand each one of them: At rest: this is the initial state of any digital data: in very short terms, this indicates the data that is stored somewhere without being used by and/or transmitted to anyone (including software, third-parties, human beings, and so on). From local Hard Drives to Network Attached Storages, from USB pendrives to mobile devices, from system folders to database servers, any physical and logical storage system, unit or device is meant to be used to contain data at rest... at least for a while. In transit: also known as "in motion". This is relative to the data which is being transmitted somewhere to somewhere else. It's worth noting that the concept of "data transfer" can take place between any number of parties, not limiting to just two (the sender and a receiver): for example, when we transfer a file from our desktop PC to our laptop using our LAN, we're basically performing a data transfer involving a single party (us); conversely, when submitting a transaction to a distribuited database, such as a blockchain, we're enforcing a data transfer between an indefinite amount of parties (the whole blockchain nodes). In use: whenever the data is not just being stored passively on a hard drive or external storage media, but is being processed by one or more applications - and therefore in process of being generated, viewed, updated, appended, erased, and so on - it's intended to be "in use". It goes without saying that data in use is susceptible to different kinds of threats, depending on where it is in the system and who is able to access and/or use it. However, the encryption of data in-use is rather difficult to pull off, since it would most likely cripple, hinder or crash the application which is actually accessing it: for this very reason, the best way to protect the data in use is to ensure that the application will take care of such job by adopting the most secure development and implementation patterns within its source code. The sum of the three statements explained above is called "the Three Stages of Digital Data": now that we got the gist of them, we're ready to dive deep into the encryption topics.

Data Encryption at-rest

From the definition of "at rest" given above we can easily understand how this kind of data is typically in a stable state: it is not traveling within the system or network, and it is not being acted upon by any application or third-party. It's something that has reached a destination, at least temporarily. Reasons to use it Why should we even encrypt it, then? Well, there are a number of good reasons for doing so: let's take a look at the most significant ones. Physical theft If our device is stolen, the encryption at-rest will prevent the thief from being immediately able to access our data. How to implement it Implementing a Data Encryption at-rest security protocol might be either easy or hard, depending on the following factors: which physical and logical data sources/storages we want (or have) to protect: physical sources include Hard Disks, NAS elements, smartphones, USB pendrives, and so on, while logical sources include local or remote databases, cloud-based assets, virtualized devices, and so on; who needs to have access to these data: human beings (local or remote users or other third-parties connecting to us), human-driven software (such as MS Word) or automatic processes or services (such as a nightly backup task); how much we're willing to sacrifice in terms of overall performance and/or ease of access to increase security: can we ask to all our local (and remote) users to decrypt these data before being able to access them? Should we use a password, a physical token or a OTP code? Can we make the encryption transparent enough to not hinder our external users and also to allow our software apps and tools to deal with the encrypted data whenever they'll need to deal with it? Luckily enough, these factors are well-known by most at-rest encryption tools, which have been designed to protect our data without compromising the overall functionality of our environment: if we want to encrypt physical (or logical) Hard-Disk drives, we can use great software tools such as VeraCrypt (100% free) or AxCrypt (free version available); if we need to protect our USB pendrives, we can either use the aforementioned tools or purchase a hardware-encrypted Flash Drive implementing fingerprint-based or password-based unlock mechanisms (starting from 20~30 bucks); if we would like to encrypt the data stored within a Database Management System, most of the DBMS available today provide native encryption techniques (InnoDB tablespace encryption for MySQL and MariaDB, Transparent Data Encryption for MSSQL, and so on); if we're looking for a way to securely store our E-Mail messages, we can easily adopt a secure e-mail encryption standard such as S/MIME or PGP (both of them are free): although these protocols are mostly related to in-transit encryption, since they do protect data mostly meant to be transferred to remote parties, as a matter of fact they are commonly used to perform a client-side encryption, which means that they protect the e-mail messages while they're still at-rest. Needless to say, since those message will most likely be sent, our destination(s) will also have to adopt the same standard to be able to read them.

Data Encryption in-transit

As the name implies, data in-transit should be seen much like a transmission stream: a great example of data in-transit is a typical web page we do receive from the internet whenever we surf the web. Here's what happens under the hood in a nutshell: We send a HTTP (or HTTPS) request to the server hosting the website we're visiting. Reasons to use it Now, let's take for granted that both the server and client have implemented a strong level of data encryption at-rest: this means that the first and the third state are internally safe, because any intrusion attempt would be made against encrypted data. However, the second state - where the data is in-transit - might be encrypted or not, depending on the protocol the server and the client are actually using to transmit the data. Here's what usually happens under the hood when the HTTP protocol is being used:

As we can see, the security issue is quite evident: when the web server processes the incoming request and transparently decrypts the requested data, the channel used to transfer it to the web client (HTTP) is not encrypted: therefore, any offending party that manages to successfully pull off a suitable attack (see below) could have immediate access to our unencrypted data. How can it help us If you're curious about which kind of attacks can be used against a unencrypted TCP-based transmission protocol such as HTTP, here's a couple of threats you should be aware of: Eavesdropping: a network layer attack that focuses on capturing small packets from the network transmitted by other computers and reading the data content in search of any type of information (more info here). Man-in-the-Middle: a tampering-based attack where the attacker secretly relays and/or alters the communication between two parties to make them believe they are directly communicating with each other (more info here). Implementing proper encryption in-transit protocols to secure our critical data transfer endpoints will definitely help us preventing these kind of threats. How to implement it Implementing an effective encryption in-transit pattern is mostly a matter of sticking to a wide-known series of recommendations and best practices while designing the actual data transfer: which protocols to (not) use, which software to (not) adopt, and so on. For example: Whenever the transmitting device is reachable via web interface, web traffic should only be transmitted over Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) using strong security protocols such as Transport Layer Security (TLS): this applies to any web site and/or WAN-reachable service, including e-mail servers and the likes. As of today, the best (and easiest) way to implement TLS security and implement the encryption in-transit for any website is by obtaining a SSL/TLS HTTPS certificate: those can either be purchased from registered CA authorities (Comodo, GlobalSign, GoDaddy, DigiCert and their huge resellers/subsellers list) or auto-generated through a self-signing process, as we briefly explained in this post. Although self-signed certificates will grant the same encryption level of their CA-signed counterparts, they won't generally be trusted by the users as their browser clients won't be able to verify the good faith of the issuer identity (you), flagging your website as "untrusted": for this very reason, they should only be used on non-production (or non-publicly accessible) server/services. Any data transmitted over e-mail should be secured using cryptographically strong email encryption tools such as S/MIME or PGP, which we already covered when we talked about data encryption at-rest: although these protocols perform their encryption at client level (and therefore at-rest), they're also great to protect the asynchronous in-transit flow of an e-mail message. Any binary data should be encrypted using proper file encryption tools before being attached to e-mail and/or transmitted in any other way. Most compression protocols, including ZIP, RAR and 7Z, do support a decent level of password-protected encryption nowadays: using them is often a great way to add an additional level of security and reduce the attachment size at the same time Non-web transmission of text and/or binary data should also be encrypted via application level encryption, taking the following scenarios into account: If the application database resides outside of the application server, the connection between the database and application should be encrypted using FIPS compliant cryptographic algorithms. Whenever application level encryption is not available, implement network level encryption such as IPSec or SSH tunneling, and/or ensure that the transmission itself is performed using authorized devices operating within protected subnets with strong firewall controls (VPN and the likes). End-to-End Encryption

Encryption in-transit is really helpful, but it has a major limitation: it does not guarantee that the data will be encrypted at its starting point and won't be decrypted until it's in use. In other words, our data might still be predated by occasional and/or malicious eavesdroppers, including internet providers, communication service providers and whoever could access the cryptographic keys needed to decrypt the data while in-transit. Overcoming such limitation is possible thanks to End-to-End Encryption (E2EE), a communication paradigm where only the communicating end parties - for example, the users - can decrypt and therefore read the messages. End-to-end encrypted data is encrypted before it’s transmitted and will remain encrypted until it’s received by the end-party. Reasons to use it To better understand how end-to-end encryption superseeds in-transit encryption in terms of resilience to eavesdroppers, let's imagine the following scenarios. Suppose that a third party manages to plant their own root certificate on a trusted certificate authority: such action could theoretically be performed by a state actor, a police service or even a malicious/corrupted operator of a Certificate Authority. Anyone who is able to do this could successfully operate a man-in-the-middle attack on the TLS connection itself, eavesdropping on the conversation and possibly even tampering with it. End-to-end encrypted data is natively resilient to this kind of attack, because the encryption is not performed at the server level. End-to-end encryption can also increase the protection level among the user processes spawned by an operating system. Do you remember the recent CPU flaws called SPECTRE and MELTDOWN? Both of them allowed a malicious third-party (such as a rogue process) to read memory data without being authorized to do so. End-to-end encryption could avoid such scenario as long as the encryption is performed between user process (as opposed to the kernel), thus preventing any unencrypted data from being put in the memory.

End-to-end encryption is the most secure form of communication that can be used nowadays, as it ensures that only you and the person you're communicating with can read what is sent, and nobody in between, not even the service that actually performs the transmission between peers. Various end-to-end encryption implementations are already effective on most messaging apps and services (including Whatsapp, LINE, Telegram, and the likes). In a typical "communication app" scenarios, the messages are secured with a lock, and only the sender and the recipient have the special key needed to unlock and read them: for added protection, every message is automatically sent with its own unique lock and key.

How to implement it

End-to-end encryption can be used to protect anything: from chat messages, files, photos, sensory data on IoT devices, permanent or temporary data. We can choose what data we want to end-to-end encrypt. For example, we might want to keep benign information related to a chat app (like timestamps) in plaintext but end-to-end encrypt the message content. Every user has a private & public key which the software has to generate on the users’ device at signup or next time they log in. The user’s public key is published to a public place (such as a REST-based key management service): this is required for users to find each other’s public keys and be able to encrypt data to each other. The user’s private key remain on the user’s device, protected by the operating system’s native key store (or other secure stores). Before sending a chat message or sharing a document, the app encrypts the contents using the recipient’s public key (client-side).
