#Is Klance a cult?

While working on my posts, I do a lot of research. My schooling involved research to support my ideas. I like to find anything that can back up what I say or confirm any Klance news. I like to be accurate, transparent, and thorough. If any official VLD news comes out that Klances does happen post show and confirms all of the supposed "Klance coded" moments, then I'll admit I was wrong.

But I still won't ship them because, in my opinion, they're not good for each other and would not last long in a relationship for various reasons. That's a blog post for another day.

Anyway,

I came across this while researching ... and I was just floored.

"As human beings, we deserve the right to have Klance be canon."

Much entitlement. Such audacity.

Let's take a look at the language here. (This is my speciality.)

Deserve is a verb. It stems from an Old French word, deservir - deserve, be worthy of, earn, merit.

Interestingly, deservir comes from the Latin deservire - serve well, serve zealously.

Breaking deservir down: the suffix de = completely, and servire = to serve.

And, according to Etymonline (my favorite website ever WHICH NOW HAS A MOBILE APP), the Latin sense of the world evolved from "to completely serve/serve completely" to "be entitled to because of good service," and then to the French "be worthy of."

This is a LOT to unpack.

Firstly, let's take a look at the original meaning of the Latin deservire: serve well, serve zealously.

I think it's pretty known that Klancers serve their ship pretty zealously. Almost to the point where it's a little scary. Maybe even a little cultish.

As much as I love VLD, making my own head canons, and acknowledging how much it means to me as a person, I do know that it is fiction. Just because something is fiction doesn't make it less valid or important. Saying "It's just a show" severely invalidates how deeply it has impacted people. But, at the end of the day, Voltron is a beautiful piece of fiction that has been shared with the world.

A fictional ship that has such a chokehold on you that you make a petition to get it canonized ... that's overkill.

And it can't be said that the majority of Klancers serve their ship well. Because raise your hand if you've seen Klancers bully people for not shipping Klance, or you have been personally bullied by a Klancer.

That brings about my second point concerning the modern day meaning of deserve: to be worthy of."

Frankly, because of the bad Klancer attitudes, they don't deserve to have Klance canonized. They're not worthy enough to have that ship canonized because their vitriol kinda dragged down the fandom.

This is what I mean about being tired of Klance shipper attitudes. Being a human being does not entitle you to have your preferred ship be canon.

As a human being, you deserve health, prosperity, love, and kindness.

DreamWorks would never take this seriously and I'm glad this petition didn't go anywhere.

Suggestion for the future: if you want to start a peition, your name really should be on it, because that's one way to show you genuinely stand behind what you're petitioning for. Notgivingmynameforprivacyreasons, I wish you luck in your future endeavors.

Also, I don't see any credit given to Ikimaru for the Klance art that was used. I may not be a Klance shipper, but I think her art is beautiful. (See? Even as a non-Klance shipper I can validate her art and see the beauty in it.) I even considered commissioning her for a time, before I realized she doesn't do commissions anymore (at least, last I checked), and after thinking it over figured Ikimaru probably wouldn't accept a non-Klance VLD commission. And that's completely okay.

jc’s rabid stans make me feel like i’m back in the vo/tron fandom with how much they insist on completely altering jc’s personality to fit their own desires like lance stans did, and how they act like every person who enjoys seeing jc as he is in canon (or imagining him worse!) is evil. the same levels of media illiteracy, the same cult-like fetish for a guy who’s (at best for jc and at worst for lance) just kind of a jerk. and x!cheng feels like klance did for me: something with zero basis in canon so stans of the jerk can throw the prettiest guy at their fave as a trophy for being the saddest inside, regardless of how made-up that sadness is or how actually compatible they would be with pretty boy. accept that your dude sucked at the beginning and either he matured out of it into a good man (lance) or that he got worse (jiang cheng)! both of those situations are fun to deal with. saying your special princess was the best and most correctest person ever since his birth is only fun if it’s true and it is plain from the very first bits we see of either of those two that it is not. on the other hand, saying that your special princess is the saddest and most pathetic and pitiful and undeserving of his circumstances is also more fun if it’s true, and again, neither jc nor lance ever concretely have it The Worst in any point on the timeline of their respective canons. (yes i remember the massacre at lotus pier. jiang cheng was not the only character who lost his family and home that day. possibly you could count allura’s death as that for lance but i’m gonna be honest and say i did not watch season 8 more than once and that once was when it came out more than four years ago so i don’t remember it very clearly). anyways please reread/rewatch with clear eyes and not purple or blue colored glasses on. it really helps.

ANYWAYS. I think that is all. I cant think of who the others would be. The only thing i would say is that lance would also be a good human torch. (Literally glowing, super hot, famous, family man, jokes for days!! etc) but keith definitely works better as a daredevil than a spiderman and i cant see a daredevil and a human torch interacting in an interesting klance dynamic way

I do, in fact, have opinions and a lot of first hand experience regarding these topics (cough, cough, Been here for ten years now). Even more so than when I discuss asexuality or something, I can imagine this as kicking the hornet's nest. Not that I mind doing so, it's more that I would need a lot of evidence to support that analysis. I kind of wonder if some of the stuff I remember is still around (that voltron list some adult ran where she and several teens reporting Sheith shippers to the FBI? The old posts defending Klance and ignoring racism? The way Pidge was constantly trans'd, because she wasn't super feminine, and they preferred her to be nonbinary than female and comfortable?)

I'll definitely add it to the list, but it will probably be a while before I get everything in order to be able to report on it.

I was involved in Sherlock and Voltron fandoms and let me say that SPN fandom (in regards to hellers) exhibits the same fandom behavior.

They over-analyse every minuscule detail rather than watching the actual show and narrative and story that's being told. They believe in the stuff they created and over-analyzed. They believe they are a selective group of people in the fandom who ''can see The Real Intent'' of the show.

They create a circlejerk and echo chamber community among themselves to make themselves and other people believe in those ''metas'' that they came up with, then at the end final stage-- blame other people, creators for ''queerbaiting''. And going as far as to claim that there are conspiracies regarding why their ship didn't sail.

Sherlock fans' conspiracy - they legit made hundreds of paged essay or videos on YT explaining why Johnlock was always meant to be canon. Their conspiracy was that the writers were somehow restained from doing so. There was a secret finale episode that has never aired on screen. It was changed at the last second.

Voltron fandom made the same thing- writing hundreds of pages of ''analyses'' and ''essays'' that somehow *definitely* proved that their gay ship Klance was going to be canon and it was sooooo obvious but the ''dumb dumb'' GA was just missing it. Only the shippers could see The Real Intent of the writers and that intent was making Klance canon.

Hellers thought Destiel was there to see, it just wasn't apparent to the others who couldn't Read The Obvious Text. They came up with so many scenarios, essays, and conspiracies that were so far-fetched that even sometimes other fandoms made fun of them. The ''rogue translator'' bullshit, which was was like ''the secret sherlock episode''. Hellers saying there was actually a destiel reunion at the finale but it was deleted, Misha actually filmed it but then the evil CVV came and just deleted those scenes and Castiel's love was supposed to be reciprocated but they restrained the writers in a conspiracy theory way. They compared CVV to ''Chuck who was meddling with the finale and the real story''..... You get the point.

It is always pathetic and toxic when a fandom involves such drama and a group of people who never seem to get rid off their holy than thou attitude and delusions. It is especially bad when they drag other people into this mess too

Yeah, unfortunately, hellers are not unique.

I think it's possible they might hold the current batshit crown for taking it the furthest - I don't know of any other obsessive shipper fanbase that has kept watching a different show about other characters convinced it's only being made to validate their ship? But the absurdist meta, the insistence only they are smart and special enough to Really Understand the canon, the harassing of TPTB on SM, the conspiracy-think, the cult-like echo chamber that attacks anyone and everyone who doesn't agree, even if it's just a matter of not toeing the chosen line hard enough - all of it has shown up to greater or lesser degrees elsewhere.

In general, I think social media has made it a lot easier to for people to find and get sucked down deep into echo chambers that wholeheartedly believe blatantly stupid shit. When you combine that with fandom, which has long been made up of fanatic fans and already had issues with sectioning off into groups to war over whose woobie and/or ship is best? It's an unfortunate circumstance, but not really a surprising one to see this sort of thing not only present but building towards increasing extremes.

A anime/Chinse book or series is deemed problematic because of certain themes.
