Plant of the Day
Friday 12 July 2024
In this abandoned glasshouse the Vitis vinifera (grapevine) has survived without the protection of the glass but may not crop so prolifically. The planting technique was to place the roots outside the structure, and the vine was trained into the glasshouse through a gap near ground level. This allowed the root system to be mulched with manure outside while the stem could be trained for maximum grape production inside.

Hannah creates simple relocatable vertical arbours for climbing plants. Climbing plants are useful in the garden to make the most of vertical space.
Hannah gets growing on some simple, relocatable growing structures, using concrete reinforcing mesh - known as reo. This steel product can be joined, bent, cut or attached for all kinds of situations and uses.
It comes in a range of sizes and thicknesses but, if cutting, you need some personal protection equipment such as safety glasses, gloves and ear muffs.
To create an arch you need a solid base - Hannah uses star pickets hammered in deeply, placing one in each corner of her new arbour. Because she’s working between terraces, she puts the upper pickets in at an angle to provide more support for her structure.
Hannah uses a thicker mesh with a 9mm bar for stability; the length will depend on how high you want your arch. Hannah recommends a minimum height of 180cm for an arbour; because her family is tall she will go higher - to 2.4m.
For heavy-duty reo it can be hard to bend sheets on your own so get a friend to help.
Secure the mesh to the star pickets with wire; Hannah cuts pieces about 40cm long.
The finished arches are very functional and can support grapes, beans, peas, heavy pumpkins or ornamental climbers such as a climbing rose.
Hannah plants a mixture of deciduous grapes and evergreen native climbers.
Filmed in Hobart, Tasmania.

Vertical Vegetable Gardens: Growing Up For More Produce
In urban and suburban settings where space is limited, vertical vegetable gardens offer a practical and efficient solution to grow fresh produce.
These innovative gardens not only maximize growing space but also add aesthetic value to balconies, patios, rooftops, and even indoor areas. Here’s a comprehensive guide on vertical vegetable gardens, including benefits, suitable vegetables, types of structures, and how to set up your own vertical garden.
Tumblr media
Benefits of Vertical Vegetable Gardens
1. Space Maximization
Vertical gardens utilize vertical space, making them ideal for small areas such as urban balconies or compact yards. By growing upwards, you can significantly increase your growing area without expanding horizontally.
2. Higher Yields
Vertical gardening allows for denser planting and better air circulation, which can lead to higher yields compared to traditional gardening methods. Plants receive more sunlight and are less prone to diseases and pests that thrive in crowded conditions.
3. Aesthetic Appeal
Vertical gardens can serve as decorative features, transforming walls or unused spaces into vibrant green areas. They enhance the visual appeal of outdoor spaces and contribute to a healthier environment.
4. Accessibility and Maintenance
With plants at eye level or higher, vertical gardens are easier to access for watering, pruning, and harvesting. This accessibility reduces strain on the back and knees, making gardening more enjoyable and accessible to people of all ages.
5. Sustainable Gardening
Vertical gardens promote sustainability by maximizing resources such as water and sunlight. They can also incorporate eco-friendly practices such as composting and using organic fertilizers, contributing to environmental conservation.
Choosing Suitable Vegetables for Vertical Gardens
Not all vegetables are suitable for vertical gardening. Here are some that thrive in this setup:
Climbing Plants: Beans, peas, cucumbers, and squash are excellent choices as they naturally climb and benefit from vertical support.
Vining Plants: Tomatoes, grapes, and certain varieties of melons can be trained to grow vertically with proper support.
Leafy Greens: Lettuce, spinach, kale, and Swiss chard grow well in vertical planters and hanging baskets.
Herbs: Basil, parsley, cilantro, and mint are ideal for smaller pots or pocket planters attached to vertical structures.
Types of Vertical Garden Structures
1. Trellises and Arbors
Trellises and arbors provide sturdy support for climbing and vining plants. They can be made of wood, metal, or recycled materials and are available in various sizes and designs.
2. Wall-mounted Planters
Wall-mounted planters are perfect for herbs, small vegetables, and flowers. They can be installed directly onto walls or fences, creating a vertical garden without occupying floor space.
3. Tower Gardens
Tower gardens consist of stacked pots or planters, allowing you to grow multiple plants in a compact footprint. They are versatile and can be used indoors or outdoors.
4. Hanging Baskets and Pots
Hanging baskets and pots are suitable for trailing plants like strawberries, cherry tomatoes, and cascading herbs. They add visual interest and can be easily moved or rearranged.
5. Vertical Hydroponic Systems
Hydroponic vertical gardens use nutrient-rich water instead of soil, making them suitable for indoor environments and maximizing space efficiency.
Setting Up Your Vertical Vegetable Garden
1. Location Selection
Choose a location that receives adequate sunlight, typically 6-8 hours per day for most vegetables. Consider factors such as wind exposure and accessibility for watering and maintenance.
2. Preparation of Soil or Growing Medium
Use a lightweight, well-draining potting mix for container plants. Ensure the soil is fertile and enriched with compost or organic matter to provide essential nutrients.
3. Planting and Maintenance
Planting: Place taller plants or climbers near the back or center of the vertical structure to prevent shading of smaller plants.
Watering: Install a drip irrigation system or water plants regularly to ensure even moisture levels. Vertical gardens may require more frequent watering due to faster drainage.
Fertilizing: Use organic fertilizers or compost tea to nourish plants throughout the growing season. Follow specific guidelines for each type of vegetable.
4. Support and Training
Provide adequate support for climbing and vining plants using trellises, stakes, or cages. Regularly train plants to grow upwards and secure them as they grow to prevent damage.
5. Pest and Disease Management
Monitor plants for pests and diseases regularly. Use natural methods such as companion planting, beneficial insects, and organic pesticides to control pests and promote plant health.
Maintenance Tips for Vertical Gardens
Pruning and Thinning: Regularly prune plants to encourage air circulation and prevent overcrowding. Thin out excess growth to maintain plant health and maximize productivity.
Mulching: Apply mulch around plants to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature. Use organic materials such as straw, shredded leaves, or compost.
Seasonal Care: Adjust planting and maintenance practices according to seasonal changes. Protect plants from frost or extreme heat and provide additional support during heavy rainfall or strong winds.
Conclusion
Vertical vegetable gardens offer a practical and aesthetically pleasing way to grow fresh produce in limited spaces. By utilizing vertical space effectively, you can enjoy higher yields, easier maintenance, and a greener environment.
Whether you're a city dweller with a small balcony or a suburban homeowner looking to maximize garden space, vertical gardening provides a versatile solution for cultivating a variety of vegetables and herbs.
Start planning and creating your vertical vegetable garden today to reap the rewards of homegrown goodness year-round.

Social Climbers
“Nature teaches us that even the most delicate vines can reach great heights with the right support.” Oprah Winfrey
Getting out of my car, the perfume emanating from my garden smells more like being inside the cosmetic department at a store. Flowing over my front gate and arbor, the jasmine is thick in its wondrous white wardrobe. Bees are buzzing as the intoxicating fragrance fills the air. A robust climber, the blooms from this gregarious vine are one of the most sought-after scents to make expensive perfumes and flavored teas. But jasmine has a dark side: it can be invasive. It grows so vigorously that it can strangle trees, shrubs, and flower beds. Wherever a stem touches the ground, a new vine will root. Jasmine thrives in sunlight and the blossoms prefer to face the sun. Keep it pruned and under control, or you may find that it will take over your landscape.
Climbers, vines, or plants that climb have specialized structures that allow them to ascend and cling to surfaces for support. I love many of them and you may also.
What are a few of the most popular climbing plants besides jasmine?
Clematis
Wisteria
Passionflower
Trumpet Vine
Grapevine
Climbing Roses
Nasturtium
ü  Clematis is renowned for its beautiful blooms, long-flowering with a plethora of colors, shapes, and climate exposure. There are over 300 species and hundreds of hybrids.
ü  Wisteria vines produce romantic cascades of fragrant pendulous blossoms in lavender, pink, and white that resemble bunches of grapes. Their vigorous vining capabilities require a very sturdy structure.
ü  Passionflower is delicate and exotic-looking, climbing with tendrils on trellises, encompassing more than 400 species. Heady-perfumed flowers appear on new growth as pollinators flock to the garden.
ü  Trumpet vine, native to Eastern North America, boasts trumpet-shaped flowers that attract hummingbirds in glorious shades of red, pink, scarlet, purple, and yellow
ü  Climbing Roses can drape over a wall, sprawl along a fence, train up an obelisk, or swirl up a tree.  In my yard, my two favorite climbers are the thornless, white Lady Banksia rose which cohabitates with my plum and chestnut trees, and the delightfully fragrant Lady of Shallot in shades of apricot and pink that covers a fence.
ü  Nasturtium is a delicious edible plant with a zesty, peppery flavor. Flowers with bold colors of yellow, red, and orange trail and climb.
Popular Climbers NOT to plant:
Honeysuckle
Morning Glory
Ivy
As beautiful as honeysuckle and morning glory are, they can also be incredibly invasive, displacing native species, producing dense mats of foliage, and covering trees, fences, or any item in their path. In some settings, they increase the erosion of the soil while reducing biodiversity. I remember my first visit to Bermuda thirty years ago where I was mesmerized by the giant and glorious sky-blue flowers that covered everything everywhere. When I asked about the “magnificent morning glory”, my comment was met with disdain. “This is a nuisance plant,” I was told. Just as bindweed is a troublemaker in our gardens, controlling morning glory is a challenge. The “easy-to-grow” or “no-fail” honeysuckle called “Hall’s Prolific” is marketed to new gardeners, but these are invasive species. The non-invasive honeysuckle, from the genus Diervilla, is native to North America and an essential part of our ecosystem providing food for native insects. If you want honeysuckle, plant Diervilla. As a self-adherent aerial plant, ivy is an aggressive climber that can wreak havoc on structures, buildings, walls, and trees. Highly flammable ivy harbors rodents and is extremely difficult to eradicate. These three specimens are what I call the “anti-social climbers”. Delete them from your most-wanted list.
Why do you want to include climbing plants in your garden design? The reasons are numerous and desirable.
ü  Vertical Interest: Climbing plants allow for more dynamic and layered landscapes as we look up.
ü  Climbers can cover arbors, trellises, fences, pergolas, and walls, adding depth and texture.
ü  Space Optimization: Climbing plants are space-savers, especially for small gardens or urban settings where space is limited. Because they grow vertically, they make efficient use of space while making a big impact.
ü  Privacy and Screening: This may be one of the best reasons for growing climbers. By growing up, they provide a natural privacy barrier, offering seclusion with the added benefit of beauty and most often, fragrance.
ü  Aesthetic Appeal: With their beautiful cascading flowers, foliage, or fruit, climbers create a lush and romantic atmosphere.
ü  Wildlife Habitat: Biodiversity is established in the garden as most climbers attract birds, butterflies, bees, hummingbirds, and other pollinators. They offer food, shelter, and nesting sites for various creatures which contribute to a healthy ecosystem.
ü  Versatility: Vines, creepers, scramblers, and climbers can be trained to grow in diverse directions and on several structures to customize landscapes.
Other than nasturtiums, all the climbers require heavy-duty, solid support structures to grow and flourish successfully. If you want to keep the climbers “social”, it is necessary to prune, maintain, and be watchful, or else they will land in the “anti-social” profile. With careful management and thought, climbers will add beauty, functionality, privacy, and ecological benefits to your garden. Enhance your outdoor space with spectacular social climbers reaching great heights with the right support.
Happy Gardening. Happy Growing!

Plant of the Day
Monday 23 October 2023
The vigorous deciduous climber Parthenocissus quinquefolia (Virginia creeper, American ivy, American woodbine, false grape, five-leaved ivy, wild wood vine) provides vivid autumn colour. Here the stems look great tumbling from this tree in a garden setting but care has to be taken as this is classified in the U.K. as an invasive non-native plants.

Plants to cover wall
Tumblr media
Stephanotis floribunda prefers warm conditions. The flowers are generally 4 cm long and creamy white with purple markings at first, with the white later turning orange-yellow. It has trifoliate (3 lobed) leaves and short racemes (flower spikes) of extremely coiled and twisted flowers that lead to its common name. Phaseolus caracalla (warm conditions-summer flowering) Most soils are suitable in a sunny or partially shaded position. They generally have a typical primrose type flower consisting of a slender tube and 5 or 6 flat spreading lobes followed by a black berry like fruit. Mostly tropical climbers, some are hardy in cooler areas. Well drained organic soils are preferred. They grow in temperate to tropical conditions but can be grown in protected positions, such as on a verandah in cooler areas. Hoyas are twining and root clinging climbers with fleshy leaves and clusters of generally long lasting, waxy petalled, star-like flowers. NOTE: The following plants are relevant for warm climates such as Northern Australia, Northern Africa, etc: Your choice needs to be influenced by what it is growing alongside and how much effort you intend to put into maintenance. If you choose a plant that is too weak, it may not survive. If you choose a plant that is too vigorous, it can dominate other plants around it, and may require a lot of effort to keep under control. Climbers can also be allowed to climb other plants, or even to scramble over rocks, tree stumps or logs.A frame made of galvanised water pipe, or similar material. The supports or roof of a pergola, arbour or archway.A climber on a wall will create a softer appearance and help reduce temperature extremes (eg: keeping the garden cooler on a hot day). You can use materials such as trellis, wire mesh, single wires or nylon strings (not jute -that will rot). Most climbers need something to climb on. If you are worried about climbers causing damage, ones to avoid are those such as Hedera (ivy) and Ficus pumila which cling to even smooth surfaces such as a concrete wall, and can eventually grow into small cracks in the wall then expand enlarging those cracks. Some climbers cause less damage than others, but no matter what you use, you should check for damage every few years, and trim back the climber if need be. The only major problems are that, if left uncontrolled, some rampant climbers can block drain pipes or gutters on buildings, while some can do serious damage to the structure (or tree) they are clinging to. Many have very attractive flowers or foliage. They are also a cheap and easy way to cover up something unsightly, such as a shed or water tank, or to soften a harsh wall, fence or tree trunk. Climbers can also be used to provide shelter or shade by enclosing structures, such as shadehouses, pergolas and arbours. If you have a small garden, climbers can be used to hide walls, or fence off boundaries, without spreading into the limited space of the garden. These include clematis, sweetpea, Rambling Roses and Virginia Creeper.Climbers are versatile plants that can often serve the same purpose as shrubs, while using less space. 'All offer different forms, shapes, colours and textures, so there is plenty of choice.' What climbing plant grows fastest?Ĭlimbers don't like to hang around! Some of the easiest climbing plant ideas are also the quickest to grow. 'Top climbing plants, that are very easy to grow include clematis, honeysuckle (Lonicera), rose, wisteria and even grape vines,' advises Chris from Gardening Express. Luckily, a lot of popular climbing plant ideas are easy to get going so long as they're cared for and supported. 'This in the long term potentially cause structural problems.' What's the easiest climbing plant to grow? 'It is important to make sure climbers aren’t left to grow under roof tiles or into gutters, as this can block drains and gutters' warns Chris from Gardening Express. This favoured easy climbing plant ideas is perfect for giving country gardens that intimate, picturesque look. They are easy to grow and take up little space. These beautiful plants have become very popular, as their beautiful bell flowers come in almost every colour.
