Plus tard dans l'année 1940, le casque Vickers fut remplacé par le modèle de casque britannique MKII.
L'Irlande, pays neutre pendant la seconde guerre mondiale, avait toutefois déclaré un état d'urgence le 2 septembre 1939 et mobilisa son armée. Elle participa à la sécurisation des côtes face aux envahisseurs allemands et autorisa le survol de son territoire par les avions alliés qui empruntaient la voie atlantique. L'Irlande joua également un rôle considérable dans le contre-espionnage sur son sol.
