I’ve got many recs! All the recs you could ever need!
McGillicuddy and Murder’s Pawn Shop - supernatural/fantasy historical fiction. The diary of Melinda Maudie Merkle. She works at simply the most boring job in the world as a typist, and the only excitement in her day comes from visiting an unusual pawn shop. That is, until she finds something there that changes things, changes her.
Featuring: Growing into a new person. A partially wooden man who kills people (his name is Wrath, and he is everything to me, and I need more people to know him). Plans that work out. Finding community. Finding love and choosing to walk away because that’s what’s best. Becoming more than you thought you were capable of. WLW (bi).
It’s also got a very decent backlog with I believe five seasons in total (now complete).
The Antique Shop - supernatural fiction. Maya is a university student in Scotland who finds a job at an old Antique Shop. An Antique Shop, apparently, where people go to find supernatural solutions to supernatural problems or perhaps simply find supernatural problems by purchasing an item from the shop.
Featuring: An aroace main character. Discussions of Fate, free will, and if those are truly opposites. Scottish folklore. A cat names Chronos. Friendship. Strange items. Maya is my beloved. A corruption arc (depending on how you look at it ;))
It is now complete with 50 episodes.
Georgie Romero Is Done For - comedy(?) (it’s not the horror genre or vibe at all but it’s classic, almost cartoony horror creatures plus some romance, some mystery, and some coming of age). Georgie Romero is ... dead. She is a zombie specifically. She finds herself in a community of ghosts, witches, vampires, and more, and she begins to make a life for herself there, taking dance lessons, getting cupcakes from the bakery, and trying to find out how she died.
Featuring: Some downright delightful characters. It’s a fun one. Themes of grief and death as the premise suggests, but overall a very light tone. WLW.
Two seasons currently out.
Russian For Cats - “This is the story of Nadia, a bilingual cat who escapes from a secret lab, and Brian, the Minnesotan who helps her hide from the spies chasing her. It's a tale of friendship and adventure... that also teaches you Russian!“
Featuring: Beloved himbo. Friendship. Light and delightful. Some drama, but I promise it all works out in the end.
Completed with 12 episodes.
Midnight Burger - Science fiction. A time and space traveling diner. A perfect place to sit down when you are in need of a moment of rest and a good cup of coffee. The main cast consists of Caspar (who has been described as an artist in the medium of misery), Ava (a physicist who is smarter than you and won’t hesitate to tell you that), Leif (an overall laid back guy and a ... cook), Gloria (a former restaurant-owner who just wanted a job and ended up in the diner), and Effie & Zebulon Mucklewain (an old timey radio).
Featuring: Friendship. SPACE. Running from an empire run by an army of people named Ted. Learning what exactly happens when you go through the black hole. “WHO THE HELL ARE YOU PEOPLE??” “We run a diner :)”.
Episodes are ~1 hour and there are currently 23 episodes. Comes out once a month.
ars PARADOXICA - science fiction and historical fiction. "When an experiment in a time much like our own goes horribly awry, Dr. Sally Grissom finds herself stranded in the past and entrenched in the activities of a clandestine branch of the US government. Grissom and her team quickly learn that there's no safety net when toying with the fundamental logic of the universe.”
Featuring: An aroace main character. Very competent ladies of varying moralities. A neat code at the end of every episode. WLW recurring character.
Completed with 35 ~40 minute episodes.
The Hidden People - self-aware urban fantasy, action, comedy. The first season is a mystery as the parents of Mackenna and Thomas Thorne are murdered. Strangely, it sure seems like they were killed by Mack herself, but that can’t be right, can it? The tale evolves into something with changelings and action and stepping sideways into new places and new roles.
Featuring: A vaguely demonic narrator who is JUDGING Mack’s lack of baking skills. Aspec WLW main character. Friendship! Siblings! Folklore and mythology! Buffy references! Great sound design. Self aware sense of humor. Epic character development for the main character.
Currently 3 seasons (~22 40 minute episodes each) are out.
We Fix Space Junk - science fiction comedy. “Seasoned smuggler Kilner and reluctant fugitive Samantha as they travel the galaxy, dodging bullets and meeting strange and wonderful beings as they carry out odd jobs on the fringes of the law. A female-led sci-fi comedy sitcom set in the far future, in a high-tech, dystopian world,”
Featuring: Some beloved AI characters. Weird space things! It’s been a while since I listened, but it is very good and I recommend it.
3 seasons out now plus some mini series.
The Strange Case Of Starship Iris - science fiction. “In 2189, Earth narrowly won a war against extraterrestrials. The Strange Case of Starship Iris is about what comes after. It's a story of outer space, survival, espionage, resistance, identity, friendship, found family, romance, and secrets. (Also, there’s jokes.)“
Featuring: Found family! Crew as family! Jewish liberal arts guy with mafia ties!! Great characters. Greta writing. Aspec and WLW and all other sorts of queer going on.
2 seasons currently out.
quick question to the crowd, anyone have any non-horror podcast recs? preferably female led/wlw also preferably not very short

HYPNOSAPIEN
The sound moved through Mel. That was the only way she could describe it.
She had come to the club in River City following mysterious flyers about this new group, HYPNOSAPIEN, whose music could "take you to a place you've never been before." Believe it or not, Mel hadn't been into clubbing since high school, but Piper insisted—after everything that had gone down with the Alphas, it was nice to let loose a little.
To call it a club was a stretch. HYPNOSAPIEN was as DIY as they come, performing in secret venues around Romero. Tonight it was the abandoned warehouse on the corner of Lincoln Avenue and Third Street.
The girls in the band were charismatic, led by Iris Blalock on lead vocals, but the music didn't impress Mel. It was the usual club trash with over-reliance on heavy bass and an overzealous mix of synthesizer that drowned out the live vocals. But Mel's biggest complaint? All their music sounded the same! That droning, wall-to-wall buzz cut between Iris' simple lyrics:
"Sink, sink, sink, sink, drop, drop, drop, drop."
After the third song though, Mel realized that the droning wasn't just a hum, but another set of vocals hidden deep in the mix. She tried to decipher the words, but they weren't even English. They didn't even sound human. And as she focused on the strange words, she began unconsciously following Iris' lyrics.
"Sink, sink, sink, sink, drop, drop, drop, drop."
And then the sound moved through her.
Mel turned to Piper to see if her friend had felt it too, but Piper was already on her knees, misty eyes locked on the duo on stage. She had torn her shirt open to grope at her small breasts, her mouth gaping as she begged to be taken deeper by "The Message."
"Oh, fuck..." Mel moaned. The meaning in the sound's inhuman words were suddenly as clear to her as if spoken in English. One-by-one members of the audience fell to their knees in uninhibited ecstasy, their cries of pleasure mixing with the music.
Mel, too, dropped, her fingers sinking between the folds of her soaked pussy.
Oh Christ, it was happening again. She was losing her mind just like she had in the basement of the Alphas house, but this was something more than a virtual reality light show. It was a total transformation, an awakening to a new state of being.
The audience chanted the lyrics hidden in the music, and Mel joined their cries: "I am the Birth of a new species! I will Prepare my body and my mind for the Great Arrival!"
But it wasn't enough just to feel herself. Mel forced Piper down to the grimy floor, pressing her lips and tongue to her nipples, her hand finding its way to Piper's pussy. Piper uttered a satisfied moan but continued the chant unbroken, "I will Fill whatever need is expected! I will Preach, I will Build, I will Breed!"
The show only spiraled from there as the hypnotized audience fucked each other senseless. Clothes shredding, bodies upon bodies. The audience paired off in twos and threes and fours, ignoring superficial details like sexual orientation or who came with who. They clawed, and sucked, and licked, and fucked, and sweated, and came. Cocks filling any holes, pussies pressed to any lips. There was no one left in the room who didn't feel The Message move through them, no one who wasn't chanting its words now.
Even the two members of HYPNOSAPIEN stopped playing. Iris took her band mate Kayla by the hair and pressed her face to her pussy. The recorded music droned on in time with the orgy. The audience fucked late into the night, The Message's programming sinking so deep into their minds that it became a permanent fixture of their existence, taking everyone to a place they'd never been before. A place they never wanted to return from.
This is a companion to Classified Information #2: The Sound Shout out to @shotgungt for the band name HYPNOSAPIEN

Righto! I have torn myself from my oh-so-dilligent art-historical studies to watch another episode of Mr Robot! That's right, it's time for my thoughts on Season 2, Episode 3! This time, I took notes, so hopefully I'll have more to say, assuming that what's under the cut is even remotely coherent~
These thoughts aren't necessarily in chronological order. I thought they flowed better like this.
Romero's dead. The first and most obvious culprit, the one suggested by both characters and framing in showing a clip of Mr Robot threatening him with a gun, is that Mr Robot is what did him in. I think it's fair to mark this as barely even a fake-out, but between him and Gideon (and Mobley referencing a plan to hide out in Arizona), it seems like the writers are trying to cut out a lot of the supporting cast from season one in order to make room for new ones this season.
This FBI lady seems like she's sticking around, for starters, since I don't think the writers would go so out of their way to show how restless and unsatisfied she is with her life and her coworkers if she wasn't going to be a recurring character. I was surprised to learn that Alexa was a thing in 2016, which is strange because I was very much alive in 2016 and probably ought to know basic things like that. Anyways, I like her, but I can't tell if her helping Romero's mother roll weed is meant to indicate she's a good person or that she's an adept manipulator. Either way, I'm intrigued~!
On the topic of manipulation, I think it's pretty obvious that Mr Price is trying to pull something, if it wasn't already. You don't just randomly take a new hire out for a fancy dinner with high-ranking executives, and indeed he did have an angle; these honourable men he invited to dine with Angela have dishonourable pasts, and he's given her the choice to strike against them. Personally, I'd wager he'll win either way; either she becomes more complicit in the structures and passive villainy of E-Corp, or he gets to use her as a weapon against men who in some way stand in the way of his own aims. Maybe I'm wrong about this, but there's no way he doesn't have something up his sleeve here.
Price seemed to profess a belief in the importance of great men when describing the WW1 paraphernalia he keeps in his office. Part of me wonders if he fancies himself such a man, or if he is grooming Angela for such a role.
Ray's been an interesting character. He's definitely got his own angle, and needs an adept computer fellow like Elliot to transfer some bitcoins or what-have-thee, in a venture that does not seem to me properly lawful. Still, towards the end of the episode he seems like he has some genuine empathy for Elliot and his situation. I don't know how similar their situations actually are, and part of me suspects Ray is overemphasizing their similarity, but at the same time I think his philosophy, though somewhat fatalistic, is probably what Elliot needs to hear to break him out of this cycle of self-destructive and ineffectual repression he's been in for the past three episodes. It's just not working out, and Mr Robot is still around.
God, the business with the Adderall, huh? I cottoned on to the cement scene being a hallucination or dream sequence pretty quick, and my notes have a tangent about the logistics of killing someone with ingested cement vs regular sand that I won't reproduce here. I've not historically been great with vomiting scenes in film and television, but this one was pretty tame, all things considered. Until Elliot started picking the Adderall out of the vomit. On the one hand, it really does sell his desperation to be rid of Mr Robot, but on the other hand it did rather turn my stomach.
The close-up of Elliot's eyes, pupils mixed with iris, was especially disturbing in a way I can't quite elaborate. I hated the way it kept cutting back to him taking more pills.
The Adderall didn't help much, and the sequence it set off was unsettling, to say the least. I don't think it's usually prescribed for DID, but I am no medicus and will happily be corrected if I am wrong on this front. I suppose that overdosing on any kind of drug isn't generally recommended for anything, though. Again, it sells Elliot's desperation and self-denial, but it also fucking sucks to watch. Poor guy.
When he ran out of pills, I breathed a sigh of relief, though it did occur to me that I know not the withdrawal effects of Adderall, and they may be quite terrible.
Elliot's critique of organized religion rather reminded me of my father. I'm not unsympathetic, but I think his argumentation was flawed. Not the point of that sequence. Marx's critique was both more empathetic and more incisive. Still not the point of that sequence.
Seinfeld is still fucking with Leon. If Elliot was not my favourite character for the quality of his monologues, that place would be occupied by Leon.
Finally, the fact that F Society's former hideout has been found was an interesting way to end the episode. Of course, the group destroyed what evidence they could, and held a party to obscure fingerprints and other biological evidence, but the logic of storytelling inexorably drives me to presume that they missed something big enough that our new FBI friend will get a lead from it.
That or someone will return to the scene who ought not to. We'll see soon, I'm sure!
