Song Review: Sarah Jarosz and the Brother Brothers feat. Nick and Helen Forster - “In Spite of Ourselves” (eTown)
Cheeky and ribald, “In Spite of Ourselves” is one of those songs that somehow comes across as innocent.
Onstage at eTown, Sarah Jarosz, the Brother Brothers and Nick and Helen Forster rendered Iris DeMent and John Prine’s latent classic in a playful manner that included a round-robin of acoustic guitar, piano, octave mandolin and fiddle solos. The vocals went similarly around the horn and, ultimately, in to the audience.
The result is a gem that’ll have big ol’ hearts dancing in listeners’ ears.
Grade card: Sarah Jarosz and the Brother Brothers feat. Nick and Helen Forster - “In Spite of Ourselves” (eTown) - A

Day One Thousand and Ninety
She don't like her eggs all runny She thinks crossin' her legs is funny She looks down her nose at money She gets it on like the Easter Bunny She's my baby, I'm her honey I'm never gonna let her go
He ain't got laid in a month of Sundays I caught him once and he was sniffin' my undies He ain't too sharp, but he gets things done Drinks his beer like it's oxygen He's my baby and I'm his honey I'm never gonna let him go

Song Review: 10,000 Maniacs feat. David Byrne - “Jolene” (Live)
David Byrne didn’t know what to do with himself when he joined 10,000 Maniacs for “Jolene” during the band’s famous “MTV Unplugged” gig. So, while he may have been strumming an acoustic guitar, he sung but a couple of words.
No matter. Natalie Merchant had things under control. She didn’t over sing it, nor did she try to emulate Dolly Parton. Merchant simply did Merchant and did so splendidly.
And now that the song is out to preview the Maniancs’ MTV Unplugged (Expanded Edition), the only question is: what took so long?
Following the template that marked the balance of Merchant’s swan song with the Maniacs, “Jolene” is one of three bonus tracks - Iris DeMent’s “Let the Mystery Be” and Jimmie Dale Gilmore’s “Dallas” are the others, also with Byrne - that’ll appear on the puffed-up album, set for a Sept. 6 release.
Every note - false starts, do-overs; everything - from the sessions that produced 10,000 Maniacs’ MTV Unplugged should come out. This is a good start.

Iris DeMent's songs sound like heaven and earth meeting within one woman's searching sensibility. The Arkansas-born, Iowa-based folk legend has announced Workin' on a World, a new album that responds to the sociopolitical challenges that have risen up in the past few years. Its title track shows DeMent, in classic fashion, calling for a divine kind of secular intervention.
"Workin' on a World" recalls the gospel classic "Working on a Building," a testimony itself based around the Biblical idea that the human body is a temple to be maintained and improved for the glory of God. DeMent takes off from the hymn's foundation with a rollicking piano line and an earthy twist. Overwhelmed by her sense that "the world I took for granted was crashing to the ground," she contemplates her powerlessness in the face of her own mortality — she won't be around to see the changes today's activism might accomplish.
As the song's joyful energy builds, she realizes that freedom fighters since time immemorial have faced these odds. The song's key line ("I'm workin' on a world I may never see") shifts from a lament to a declaration, its passion reinforced by track producer Richard Bennett's muscular guitar lines and a joyful horn section. Climate activists often talk about the reality DeMent articulates; when change comes slow in the face of daunting odds, it can be tough to keep fighting. "Workin' on a World" is a hallelujah for the good done by those who lay the path toward good even if they may not walk its full length
