Macabre Month 7 Part VI: Transylmania (2009)
In today's review, I get schooling in the heart of Transylvania, as I attempt a #positive review of the 2009 vampire comedy Translymania #PatrickCavanaugh #TonyDenman #PaulHKim #JenniferLyons #OrenSkoog #DavidSteinberg #MusettaVander #IrenaAHoffman
While origins have been told and retold, the modern vampire has been around for centuries. One would think we are all out of ideas, that there is no way to redo what already has come before and what audiences are familiar with and come to expect. Yet, with exception, it can come with subversion. In 2009, to bring a fresh spin on Dracula and his kin, a group of college students headed to the…

If you think my faceblindness is selective and I can recognize people I care about if I really apply myself and study their features and commit them to memory via some ingenious mnemonic device please know that yesterday in public I mistook two separate photos of Wallis Simpson for Irena Krzywicka on two separate occasions and as I've mentioned many times before, as a child mistook Dustin Hoffman in drag for my own mother

Marie Trintignant was born on 21 January 1962 She was a French actress.
Trintignant was born in Boulogne-Billancourt, the daughter of actor Jean-Louis Trintignant and his second wife, French film director, producer, and screenwriter Nadine Marquand. She first appeared on screen aged four in her mother's film My Love, My Love. When Marie's baby sister Pauline died when Marie was eight, she became withdrawn and virtually stopped speaking. Her parents divorced in 1976. Throughout her early life, she was afflicted by severe shyness, but by her mid-teens, she decided to become an actress. She had a strong affection for animals and considered becoming a veterinarian, but in the end pursued a career in acting.
Trintignant was the mother of four sons: Roman with drummer Richard Kolinka, Paul with actor François Cluzet, Léon with Mathias Othnin-Girard and Jules with her husband, director Samuel Benchetrit.
Marie Trintignant was severely injured in a beating on 26 July 2003 in Vilnius, Lithuania by her then-boyfriend Bertrand Cantat, lead singer with the French rock group Noir Désir. Cantat repeatedly punched Marie Trintignant in the head, leading to her death six days later in a clinic in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France by cerebral edema. She was 41. Cantat was convicted of murder ("murder with indirect intent" - dolus eventualis) and served four years in prison.

Gina Hunt: Azimuth
On view: May 20 through August 4, 2018
Opening reception: Sunday, May 20, from 2PM to 4PM
Azimuth presents new site-responsive works by Chicago-based artist Gina Hunt. The exhibition title is a term Hunt encountered during her recent research on sundials, the earliest tools for measuring time; azimuth describes the distance and direction of the sun from the observer. The artist will create an actual sundial on the south-facing exterior wall of the Franklin and will visit the site at regular intervals to make timeline marks based on the movement of light and shadows. Inside the Franklin, Hunt’s screens made from layers of theater scrim that she has dyed red, green, and blue—referencing the colors of light on our digital screens and the cones in our eyes, which are sensitive to red, green, and blue wavelengths—will filter the natural light and create an ever-changing experience. Hunt’s project will be on view from May until August, as the sunlight shifts from the soft and diffused glow of spring to the intense and direct glare of summer. Azimuth will also overlap with the summer solstice.
Hunt has long been interested in “technologies of imaging through the medium of light,” from her early cyanotypes on rice paper, to her more recent paintings on cut and twisted canvas, to her current installations employing hand-dyed theater scrim. She began using scrim while traveling for residencies and a fellowship in 2016 not only because of its malleability and durability, but also its “magical ability to become translucent or opaque depending on the light source.” Surprising interference patterns are formed in her layers of the thin cotton mesh. Hunt’s research has recently yielded: a triangular installation of colorful screens at Badlands National Park in South Dakota; layers of polyester netting stretched between metal poles on Virginia Commonwealth University’s campus in Doha, Qatar; rectangular window coverings at University Galleries of Illinois State University and Drew University in Madison, New Jersey; and an outdoor information booth wrapped with vibrantly colored screens at the now-closed Fergus Falls State Hospital in Minnesota.
Hunt’s work has been exhibited at Virginia Commonwealth University, Doha, Qatar; Drew University, Madison, New Jersey; 65GRAND, Chicago; University Galleries of Illinois State University, Normal; DEMO Project, Springfield, Illinois; E. Tay Gallery, New York; Hoffman LaChance Contemporary, St. Louis; Front Room Gallery, Brooklyn; Elmhurst Art Museum, Elmhurst, Illinois; Jan Brandt Gallery, Bloomington, Illinois; and The Soap Factory, Minneapolis, among others. She was the 2015-2016 Fellow at Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar. The artist’s work is included in the collections of the National Park Service, Virginia Commonwealth University, and Minnesota State University. Hunt received an MFA from Illinois State University, an MA from Minnesota State University, and a BFA from Minnesota State University.
This project is organized by Kendra Paitz Senior Curator at University Galleries of Illinois State University.

In Conversation: Gina Hunt and Kendra Paitz +                               Performance: Chin-Ting Huang
Sunday, July 15 at 2pm
The Franklin is pleased to present a conversation between artist Gina Hunt and curator Kendra Paitz on Sunday, July 15 at 2pm. This event is organized in conjunction with Hunt’s Azimuth, which was curated by Paitz. The exhibition is on view at The Franklin through August 4.
The conversation will be followed by a performance by Chin-Ting Huang. The Space I Can’t Get In V.2, a performance utilizing bottles, microphones, amps, a mixer, and a lightbox to, in her words, “activate the space as a sequence of mumbles, sounds that evoke breath and make absence present.” She elaborates that the work offers “a look into the private personal biography and into our relationship with everyday objects and how they define our social relations with others.” The artist uses bottles and microphones as instruments, and for this iteration, she will include discarded alcohol bottles collected by Edra Soto (Co-founder of The Franklin) in the Garfield Park neighborhood where The Franklin is located.
All events are free and open to the public.
