I also think I've seen it used as a "NOW things get serious!" moment when applied to characters that don't have violent or aggressive personalities like Tedd Verres or Ippo Makunoichi.

I'd like to think it's an attempt to try to provoke the audience and show how the story is about to turn a corner, attacking through the monkeysphere of "main character we care about and female love interest they care about" even though the bad guy has already shown their "horrible person we want to see get the bad end of a Dempsy Roll" credentials with grievous acts of violence and harm to about everybody else.

But...it's hard to not notice a coincidence, a feeling that you've seen this sort of plot point before. And you've seen it a lot. And you start to wonder, to put another way, "why is the turning point for a main character to lose their restrained personality so often when a female side character/love interest/friend/family member gets hurt?"

This is a Doylist question, by the way. It's not "why is the character getting mad about it", it's "why is the turning point implemented so often in this form? Was the character not already mad enough?"

Yes, he hurt your girlfriend and, yes, that's something to be rightfully pissed about but he hurt a ton of other people too, mi amigo. Much more grievously and you were already pissed about that. It's not even the first time they've hurt or angered you on a personal level or a personal connection.

And…there's this odd feeling you get when you think about it. It's almost like you're asking a question you can already see the outline of an answer to.

I can't say for certain if this is an answer but it…it feels as though the intent was emotional provocation, strengthened by the act being done to a woman, the same way we would be extra pissed at somebody slapping a child.

Not gonna lie, I'm a little bitter about being excluded from the sidequest dealing with the legendary boar from MY CHAPTER ONE causing problems for MY VILLAGE. I'm a little unhappy that Ochette and Castti team up for this subplot and I can just go fuck myself, I guess.

And no, I'm not just pissy because process of elimination means Agnea's Crossed Paths is going to be shared with fucking Osvald.
