#2506 - Geranium molle - Dove's-foot Crane's-Bill
Tumblr media
AKA Awnless Geranium, and a very long list of synonyms.
Originally native to the Mediterranean area, but now widespread, thriving as a weed in drier sandy soils in sunny positions. It's been naturalised in New Zealand since at least 1852.

Birdtober 21st, 2024 "Introduced Species"
I wanted to do a European Starling and do a watercolor (they look watercolor) but it turns out they're more complicated than I was expecting so it is past my bedtime.

Book Review: Wild Wasatch Front
If it isn’t clear by now from my Weeds of Boise series and countless other posts, I happen to be interested in the flora and fauna of urban areas. Urban ecology is a fascinating field of study, and I’m not sure that it gets the attention it deserves. Nature is not some far away place, and you shouldn’t have to leave city limits to go in search of it. Remarkably, nature exists right outside your…

#2267 - Maratus griseus - White Banded House Jumper
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A Peacock Spider from Australia, now widespread in New Zealand's North Island and parts of the South. Unusually for a Peacock Spider, sometimes found inside houses. Not as colourful as others in the genus, but like other Maratus the male has a dance he does before he dares approach a female. She, on the other foot, has her own dance to warn him off if she's already mated.
Taupo, Taupo Volcanic Zone, New Zealand

A Chinese Praying Mantis stares back at the camera. This species of mantis is introduced, not native to the midwestern U.S. but I still enjoy seeing them in the garden. However, they also outcompete the native Carolina Mantis, which I have yet to see in person :(
