Plant of the Day
Saturday 14 September 2024
Following the flat clusters of white flowers on Viburnum opulus (guelder rose, dogberry, water elder, cramp bark, snowball tree, European cranberry bush) in early summer bunches of translucent bright red fruits are produced and often persist into winter. The berries are an important food source for birds, including bullfinch and mistle thrush and the flowers are especially attractive to hoverflies.

14th August 2024: Sky this evening and guelder rose berries at Winnall Moors on Saturday
I was thrilled to see two Swifts during some great time at a colourful Dean Garnier Gardens at Winchester Cathedral at lunch time, perhaps the last I'll see this year of these delights of spring and summer skies as they head off for the year I've had a great year for them. Grey Heron both flying out from Lakeside this morning harassed by gulls and a stunning view of one with a Moorhen in the River Itchen at the Weirs at lunch time, Rabbit, bee, Beautiful Demoiselle, hemp agrimony, broad-leaved enchanter's nightshade, red bartsia, herb-Robert, yellow fumitory, ivy-leaved toadflax, dock, red clover and white clover were other highlights.

MARY OF GUELDERS // QUEEN OF SCOTLAND
“She was Queen of Scotland by marriage to King James II of Scotland. She ruled as regent of Scotland from 1460 to 1463. Queen Mary was granted several castles and the income from many lands from James, which made her independently wealthy. In May 1454, she was present at the siege of Blackness Castle, and when it resulted in the victory of the king, he gave it to her as a gift. She made several donations to charity, such as when she founded a hospital just outside Edinburgh for the indigent; and to religion, such as when she benefited the Franciscan friars in Scotland. After her husband's death, Mary ruled as regent for their son James III of Scotland until her own death three years later. She got involved in the War of the Roses and took Margaret of Anjou and Edward of Westminster into her household to keep them out of Yorkist hands.”

Quote
Margaret’s and her son’s refuge after the Lancastrian defeat at Northampton was Scotland, where she got a sympathetic hearing from the recently widowed queen, Mary of Guelders, who was acting as regent for her young son James III. Contrary to widely accepted accounts, this is where Margaret was residing at the time of the battle of Wakefield, fought on 30 December 1460. The dramatic scenes presented by Shakespeare and repeated, time and again, in what can only be described as fictitious reconstructions of events, have no historical accuracy whatever.
Diana Dunn, "The Queen at War: The Role of Margaret of Anjou in the Wars of the Roses" in War and Society in Medieval and Early Modern Britain (ed. Diana Dunn, University of Liverpool Press, 2000)

Plant hedgerows.

“Bee engaged with Youth”. World Bee Day 2024.
Which Hedge Plants Are Best For Bees?
All native plants, which make up our conservation hedge mixes, are great for bees, especially blackthorn and hazel, which open their flowers and catkins before most other trees and shrubs.
The other native classics are Hawthorn, Crab Apple, Dog Rose, Common Dogwood & Red Dogwood, Field Maple, Guelder Rose, Spindle, Sweet Briar Rose or Wayfaring Tree.
By mixing several varieties together (five is a good number), you ensure a good spread of flowering times.
Honey bee hives do not really hibernate; they are active on warm winter days, so plants that flower in cold weather are extra important.
Other great hedge plants for bees include:
Viburnum tinus Eve Price (Winter flowering)
Rosemary (Summer flowering)
Forsythia Spectablis (Winter flowering)
King Edward VII Currant (Early-Spring flowering)
These plants are too small or low growing to be a privacy hedge, but they are perfect for low ornamental hedging / edging.
Lavender (Summer flowering)
Sweet Box - Sarcococca confusa (Mid-Winter flowering)
