what kind of hours do zoo workers have? how often do they get to reintroduce animals to the wild? do they get to work with international zoos and nature reserves? do they have to work with people a lot? how do they choose what plants go into the enclosures of animals that live in drastically different environments?
There are many different zoo workers including animal care specialists, veterinarians, guest guides, and support staff such as custodians and staff for the gift shops, food services, and ticket intake. And those are just the employees that work on site on a standard day, not including administrative work! In terms of animal care specialists, the standard working day is 8 hours but it can vary. Animal care specialists are very busy! A single animal care specialist will often be responsible for entire areas. For example, instead of being just a gorilla caretaker, one would be primate specialist for the African rainforest area which would have them dividing their time between the gorillas, mandrills, and colobus monkeys. On top of this, they will often assist in other departments as needed due to the unpredictable nature of zoo work. So standard full time hours, but early mornings would be common and some would be on call while off duty, especially vets.
Introducing animals to the wild is a long and slow process that necessitates collaboration between many people and organizations. The Calgary Zoo is also the Wilder Institute, the latter referring to the conservation and international affairs aspect of the institution. The Wilder Institute and organizations like it in other zoos do a lot of work involving the communities local to where their animals are indigenous to, to help protect these species in the wild. The Wilder Institute's community conservation project works to help develop symbiotic relationships between people and wildlife internationally to support long term sustainability. While the majority of animals in zoos cannot be released, when there is an animal that is determind to be able to thrive in the wild the institute will collaborate with communities and organizations local to the animals native region to set it up for the most successful reintroduction policy. So animal releases are not very frequent, but when they are done there is a lot of work done to ensure they are done right. Because the Calgary Zoo is in Canada, they mostly do wild release with species native to the area. They work with local wildlife rehab centers to help raise rescued infants (one of the endangered owls at the Calgary Zoo's Canadian Wilds exhibit is a prolific foster mother for chicks) and will house unreleasable animals such as nuisance bears to prevent them from being euthanized. We tend to think of zoos and sanctuaries as very different, but their work overlaps.
Every (credible) zoo works with many other zoos and nature reserves, acting as one branch of a series of massive conservation programs and initiatives. The Wilder Institute collaborates with a wide network of international bodies, and doing so is often a requirement for accreditation. Zoos as a whole are sort of a living Svalbard seed vault-- the species survival plan matches animals across zoos to find the best genetic and personality matches to allow animals to breed in captivity to create a population safety net for the species. This means that even if an animal goes extinct in the wild, there will be a diverse and healthy population in captivity that could potentially repopulate their native area. This is why I am such a big supporter of zoos! They do so much to prevent extinction on a global scale.
Working with people is a MASSIVE part of zoo work. Zoos have tons of employees and volunteers whose main jobs are answering questions and educating the public. The most important animal in sucessful conservation is humans, because we have the power to mobilize and save other species together. As such, zoos work with guests of all ages to raise awareness, foster appreciation and passion for wildlife, and raise money for their work and projects.
This is a great question which boils down to the basics: what does the species use the plants around it for? Obviously if you're furnishing an outdoor enclosure in Calgary the plants of the African rain forests aren't going to thrive. Additionally, since species are staying in the same areas, if they are hard on the plants they aren't going to grow back as well. As such, native flora that is sturdy and hearty works well, or fake trees that are specifically made to be climbed on can be a good substitute. Keepers may even put greens and foliage on wood structures to mimic tree foraging. Most plants are fair game as long as they are safe to ingest and add something to the habitat, meaning that once the practical concerns are met (safety, sturdiness, hardiness) aesthetic choices can be made.
Hope this answers all your questions! I took my time to make sure I was thorough.

"In May 2023, India and Israel signed a new bilateral agreement to bring forty-two thousand additional Indian laborers to Israel. Modi’s most recent agreement with Netanyahu aims to fast-track current plans even more, lifting restrictions to hasten migrant workers’ entry into Israel. The temporary, low-wage migrants from rural and small-town North India, some of the poorest regions in the country, are desperate for decent employment—so desperate that they’re willing to work for a regime that is actively engaged in what the International Court of Justice has called a “plausible genocide.” They’re seeking paid work they’ve failed to find within India’s growing but deeply unequal and caste-bound economy. Bilateral deals like the one between India and Israel give off the sheen of newness, appearing to be the products of a twenty-first century age of hypermobile capital. But in fact, the two countries are dusting off a time-worn strategy from the colonial archive: importing and exporting racially marked temporary labor to manage political and economic problems in one fell swoop."
....
Bilateral mobility agreements like the India-Israel deal are nothing new. Across the world, more and more states—Singapore, Bahrain, Canada, and the United States among many others—have begun to employ temporary, closed-term migrant labor programs. In the Middle East, autocratic Gulf states have long relied on such schemes. And in addition to contracting Palestinian labor, Israel has long relied on Thai, Filipino, Nepali, and Indian workers, too. Typically, these states have two goals. On the one hand, they want to preserve the ethnic composition of a privileged national citizenry. On the other, they need large amounts of cheapened laborers, especially in the domestic, construction and retail sectors, to grow. Contract labor schemes have allowed them to do both: with them, states can access a mass supply of workers without having to grant any of them citizenship. Israel, for example, offers five-year, temporary immigration channels for migrant workers, but gives them no option for family reunification or naturalization.
...
The Modi-Netanyahu labor deal has an even older historical predecessor: British indenture. In the nineteenth century, as chattel slavery came to an end in Britain, indentured labor from countries such as India and China was introduced as a more “humane” alternative. The practice was abolished in 1920, but a century later, traces of its institutional legacy live on in migrant labor programs. Indian and other Asian workers were desirable across the Gulf region because they were seen as politically “docile,” a powerful racial trope with particular roots in nineteenth-century indenture practices. They were also desirable because, as sociologist Andrzej Kapiszewski notes, “Asian governments became often involved in the recruitment and placement of their workers, facilitating their smooth flow to the Gulf countries.” The governments of India, Pakistan, and the Philippines, lured by the healthy remittances promised to them, were all too eager to help in the importation of their workers.
...
If modern states have ensured the brutal subjugation of both populations living, and workers laboring, in their borders through colonial means, then the resistance to those tactics must be anticolonial in response.

Working in Canada
Tumblr media
Working in Canada as a foreign national involves understanding the country's immigration and employment regulations. Canada offers various pathways for individuals interested in working there. Here are some key steps and considerations:
1. **Determine Eligibility:** Before pursuing employment in Canada, determine if you are eligible to work there. Common pathways include:    - Temporary Work Permits: These allow you to work in Canada for a specific job and period. Common categories include the International Mobility Program and the Temporary Foreign Worker Program.    - Express Entry: This system is used for certain skilled workers who want to become permanent residents. It includes the Federal Skilled Worker Program, Federal Skilled Trades Program, and Canadian Experience Class.
2. **Job Search and Networking:** Research Canadian companies and industries that match your skills and qualifications. Networking can help you find job opportunities and make connections.
3. **Job Offer:** In many cases, you will need a valid job offer from a Canadian employer to apply for a work permit.
4. **Work Permit Application:** Once you have a job offer, you or your employer will need to apply for a work permit through the appropriate channels, such as the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website.
5. **Labor Market Impact Assessment (LMIA):** Depending on the type of work permit and your circumstances, your employer may need to obtain an LMIA, which is a document that shows there is a need for a foreign worker.
6. **Express Entry Profile:** If you are considering permanent residency, create an Express Entry profile and receive an invitation to apply for permanent residence based on factors such as your age, education, work experience, and language proficiency.
7. **Documentation:** Prepare all required documentation, including forms, job offer letters, and supporting documents, for your work permit or permanent residency application.
8. **Biometrics and Medical Exams:** Depending on your situation, you may need to provide biometric data and undergo a medical examination.
9. **Arrival in Canada:** Once your work permit is approved, you can travel to Canada and start working.
10. **Permanent Residency:** If your goal is to become a permanent resident of Canada, you can explore options like the Provincial Nominee Program, Family Sponsorship, and other pathways available through Express Entry.
It's important to stay updated on Canadian immigration policies and procedures, as they may change over time. Consulting with an immigration consultant or an authorized representative, as well as using official government resources, is advisable to ensure accurate and up-to-date information.
Additionally, consider factors such as cost of living, lifestyle, and cultural adaptation when considering working in Canada.

Air travel typically falls on a spectrum ranging from tedium to chaos, but entering the United States in recent months has often served up a uniquely painful combination of the two. Complaints abound on social media of packed arrival halls and hourslong immigration lines at major airports including O’Hare in Chicago, JFK in New York, and Dulles outside Washington, D.C.—the latter airport being so poorly situated and designed that it serves as apt homage to the damage the Dulles brothers wreaked on decades of U.S. foreign policy.
Part of the problem is an aggressive rebound in global travel after two years of COVID-induced nosedives. International air traffic more than doubled in 2022 compared with 2021, approaching pre-pandemic levels, according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA). And more people are lining up to board. The bigger problem is when they get off, in the United States at least. The long wait times, according to officials and airport industry executives, come down to a combination of surging demand, limited resources, and rapidly shifting technological needs and capabilities.
“We are still experiencing long wait times, and actually it’s ticking up again at the moment, and it is related to the number of officers available for clearing passengers,” said Matthew Cornelius, the executive vice president of the Airports Council International-North America, which represents more than 300 airports across the United States and Canada. “That sort of is a root-cause issue for a lot of the problems that we see around our members’ facilities.”
According to data from U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), the agency as of last year had around 1,800 fewer agents than it needed to process people entering the United States. And the problem will likely get worse before it gets better, even though CBP has lots of fancy new gear that is meant precisely to streamline the whole process. The agency acknowledges it’s an issue.
“COVID was still impacting numbers when we had that 1,800 that we assessed last year,” said Jody Hardin, CBP’s executive director for planning, program analysis, and evaluation. Updated numbers due to be released later this year will show a “slight increase in the amount of officers needed,” she added, though airport staffing is a less urgent need compared with the United States’ southwestern border.
CBP has deployed a patchwork of different technologies over the past decade to ease the load, starting with “automated passport control” kiosks that it debuted in 2013 that allowed incoming travelers to scan their passport, take their picture, and, when necessary, provide fingerprints and additional information.
Those kiosks have now largely been phased out, only used for trusted traveler programs such as Global Entry that pre-verify members at a price tag of $100 so they can skip the immigration lines. Global Entry is currently available to citizens of the United States and 13 partner countries, with some 8 million users. A smartphone-enabled version, known as mobile passport control, which CBP brought in-house last year after previously subcontracting it to private companies, is only available to U.S. and Canadian citizens entering through one of 33 U.S. airports.
As of now, however, CBP is increasingly leaning on a biometric facial comparison system known as Simplified Arrival. The system uses cameras placed next to immigration officers to take a picture when a traveler walks up and matches it to an existing passport or visa photo on file. According to Matthew Davies, the executive director of the CBP’s admissibility and passenger programs, the system has thus far processed around 285 million travelers since it debuted in 2018 and prevented more than 1,700 people from illegally entering the United States. The agency has also deployed a biometric exit program that scans the faces of passengers exiting the country at three dozen airports. It has been a long time coming: A biometric entry-and-exit program was a recommendation in the 9/11 Commission Report.
“From the standpoint of a counterterrorism practitioner, one of the things we always tried to do is to spend less time worrying about the people who were a low risk so that we could devote more time and attention to the people who are a higher risk,” said Thomas S. Warrick, who worked on counterterrorism in various roles for the Department of Homeland Security during the George W. Bush, Obama, and Trump administrations.
Proponents of the system say using facial recognition technology to compare a passport image to an image taken on arrival—supplemented by a second look by a CBP officer in the case of an inconclusive match—optimizes privacy, national security, and time.
“Essentially, what their job is trying to do is find the needle in the haystack, and if you can get rid of hay that you know is not a problem, that’s a good strategy,” Cornelius said.
But critics of facial recognition technology cite its troubling implications for privacy and potential discrimination, with a history of law enforcement agencies misidentifying nonwhite faces. A group of lawmakers reintroduced a bill in March that calls for a moratorium on the use of facial recognition by U.S. government agencies. Far more sinister examples abound worldwide, with China in particular using the technology to surveil and police its citizens.
“Using facial recognition in airports normalizes this idea of mass surveillance,” said Caitlin Chin, a fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, adding that “this is part of a larger trend of government agencies or private companies deploying facial recognition in more and more facets of our lives.”
Beyond the societal implications, experts are concerned about how much oversight there is of how biometric data is collected and stored. The same algorithms that send you endless pitches for a new speaker are the ones responsible for your security.
“We need to pause and rethink and reimagine border control and protection. In the datafication of our world, in this data-driven environment, we need to truly understand how mass surveillance technologies can undermine the practice of citizenship,” said Renée Cummings, an artificial intelligence and data ethicist at the University of Virginia’s School of Data Science.
Davies, the CBP admissibility and passenger director, says the agency deletes photos of U.S. citizens within 12 hours, while photos of noncitizens are retained for 14 days for facial comparison purposes before being stored along with entry and exit records for decades in a system run by the Department of Homeland Security. Travelers also have the ability to opt out of being photographed at the counter and can have their passport examined the old-fashioned way, but Davies stressed that the cameras are simply meant to augment the process every traveler would go through regardless.
“We’re not trying to subject people to monitoring or extensive surveillance,” he said. “This is literally just at the point where you normally would produce your passport, you’re producing it again, making sure you are who you say you are.”
Depending on where you’re going when you leave the United States, you may encounter facial recognition on the other end, too. Airports in countries such as Germany, the United Kingdom, India, and Japan have deployed facial recognition technology at different steps of the airport process, from passport control to automated boarding.
In a way, the pandemic created this monster. “The COVID pandemic really kicked it up a notch because people were trying to focus on touchless, and with a lot fewer people going through an airport, they could make the necessary upgrades without causing really long lines,” said Stephanie Gupta, the senior vice president for security and facilitation at the American Association of Airport Executives. The pandemic may have also made people more willing to make the trade-offs on privacy and security that facial recognition systems depend on for mass adoption and success. According to IATA’s 2022 Global Passenger Survey, three out of four passengers would be “eager to use biometrics” in lieu of passports or boarding passes.
“If you have an iPhone, a newer model, you’re using your face to unlock your phone,” Cornelius said. “People are becoming more comfortable with the process.”
But even if travelers are willing to have their picture taken to save a few minutes, the facial recognition technology used by CBP still requires some degree of human involvement. And there aren’t, in CBP at least, enough humans.
What determines whether two images are of the same person—terrorist or not—is “the Mark 1 human eyeball,” said Warrick, who’s now at the Atlantic Council. “That’s why it’s important to have a human backup and why you have to be cautious about letting computers go too far.”

“KEEP BRITAIN ARMED SEAMEN'S UNION AIM,” Toronto Star. April 10, 1942. Page 38. ---- Vote "Yes", Mobilize for Victory, Urges Sullivan - Will Train Crews ---- "It's 'yes' on the plebiscite and 'mobilize for victory' - these are the aims of the Canadian Seamen's Union and we're going right after them," says J. A. "Pat" Sullivan, the president of the C.S.U., who is in Toronto for the first time, since his internment 22 months ago.
"All that matters is the winning of the war," he said, "and our union is going to do its part in seeing that a bridge of ships is kept moving across the Atlantic to help Britain. That's the thought behind our proposed training program which I mentioned in Montreal last Monday. We'll supply the manpower when the ships are ready - but we've got to move fast because there are lots of ships being made in Canada these days.
"The training program, in co-operation with the federal government, will be designed to fit about 600 or 700 inland seamen as fully trained ocean seamen every six weeks. We plan on using retired captains as instructors to assist the seamen to get their mates' rating. We also plan to work with the government in drawing from our membership men to qualify for) engineers' tickets.
"I can't say anything about the internment - against the regulations. I'll just say I'm in tip-top shape to go to work, to help win the war."
Mr. Sullivan, Jack Chapman and Dave Sinclair, other C.S.U. officials released from internment, will be guests of honor at a dinner in the Carls-Rite hotel at 6.30 p.m., Sunday. Trade union leaders, members of the Civil Liberties committee and others have been invited.

With AI and predictive analytics, they can automate tailored challenges at scale, significantly enhancing their connection with loyalty program members and critical shopper segments.
Enhancing what consumers expect from gamification
Many retailers have already developed unique and creative ways to engage consumers through gamification. Asda, for example, has seen tremendous success engaging customers through its “Spin the Wheel” game inside its mobile app where the retailer has rewarded millions of customers with money and prizes as they unlock the chance to spin and win every time they meet the £5 minimum spend threshold.
One of Canada’s largest retailers, Loblaw, has also implemented gamification, but in a slightly different way and aimed at a different segment of shoppers. Loblaw’s PC Health proposition, which provides healthcare services to shoppers, introduced a gamified experience that engages with consumers using Fitbits or Apple watches, awarding users bonus points for hitting a step count goal, for example.
While both Asda and Loblaw deliver great gamified experiences for users, AI-powered personalization will take them further. By leveraging a shopper’s sales history, loyalty interactions, and additional data sources such as time, weather and preferences, AI-powered personalization tools can help transform gamified encounters into true 1-to-1 experiences.
This enhanced approach to gamification is exemplified by Tesco and Carrefour, both of which introduced personalized gamification through challenges inside their loyalty programs to great fanfare within the grocery industry. Both retailers are using AI to automate the creation and execution of fully personalized challenges for each loyalty member enrolled in the challenges offering. As each consumer completes a custom, designated task, they receive a custom reward. The AI automatically selects contests and rewards based on the individual’s purchase history and preferences.
These programs offer gamification with a purpose—moving beyond simply engaging customers to rewarding them individually for displaying desirable behaviors.
Three benefits of personalized gamification at retail
Gamification has long been recognized as a powerful marketing strategy. Nearly 70% of respondents in a 2023 Euromonitor International survey cited it as a top loyalty tactic, noting that adding challenging and competitive elements significantly boost customer engagement and retention. Gamification also fulfills consumers’ desires for immersive and goal-oriented experiences.
By integrating AI-powered personalization, retailers can elevate their gamification efforts and enjoy three key benefits:
1. Improved loyalty
In a global shopper survey by Eagle Eye, 60% of North American shoppers said they rely on loyalty programs to save money, and 66% of global consumers say they would or already do participate in games and contests within their favorite loyalty programs. When retailers combine these two desires, the result is a more loyal shopper. Personalized challenges within the rewards program can inspire those consumers while they shop and help them save money in a fun way. By leveraging the member’s loyalty data, these personalized gaming experiences make shoppers feel recognized and valued.
2. Boosted engagement and incremental spending
Eagle Eye’s global survey also revealed that 84% of shoppers believe personalized rewards help them save money. Loyalty members see saving on their favorite items as the primary benefit of a loyalty program, and personalized gamification directly caters to this need. By offering tailored rewards and challenges, retailers can increase member engagement and drive both the consolidation of spend into their business, as well as encourage incremental spending, as members are more likely to participate in programs that provide tangible savings on items they frequently purchase.
3. Unlock a new revenue stream
By deploying new, gamified tactics retailers gain the opportunity to open new revenue streams by collaborating with suppliers who want to reach their shoppers through these highly engaging and personalized marketing initiatives. Games and challenges can become new, high-value items on a retailers’ Retail Media inventory, with suppliers keen to fund these tactics to drive their own objectives in collaboration with their retail partners.
Revamping Gamification in retail
In the near term, as retailers further their use of AI across their businesses, personalized loyalty programs will continue to expand. AI, automation, and personalization will be touching every part of the retail journey, including loyalty accounts.
Retailers like Asda, Loblaw, Tesco and Carrefour are navigating new waters around personalization and loyalty, but companies will see clear benefits—more loyalty, more active shoppers, and more incremental spending when they can create true 1-to-1 engagement across all touchpoints. Executing personalized programs at scale necessitates the use of AI and predictive analytics to automate challenges and tailor rewards.
To successfully implement gamification, retailers must invest in advanced technology and partner with industry experts. By doing so, they can cultivate deeper customer engagement and drive long-term growth through a uniquely tailored shopping experience.

Why Canada is a Top Choice for International Students
Canada has emerged as a leading destination for international students, offering a blend of high-quality education, welcoming communities, and valuable post-graduation opportunities. If you’re considering studying abroad, Canada should be at the top of your list. Here’s why:
Excellent Education System
Canadian universities and colleges are renowned for their exceptional education standards and innovative programs. Institutions like the University of Toronto, McGill University, and the University of British Columbia are globally recognized for their academic excellence. Canadian higher education emphasizes critical thinking, effective problem-solving, and research capabilities, ensuring that students are well-prepared for successful careers. Whether you’re pursuing an undergraduate, master’s, or doctoral degree, Canada’s education system equips you with valuable skills and knowledge.
Multicultural and Inclusive Societies
Canada is celebrated for its commitment to diversity and multiculturalism. With nearly half of its population being born outside the country, Canadian cities are incredibly international and welcoming. As an international student, you’ll find friendly neighborhoods, diverse communities, and ample opportunities to connect with people from your home country. Major cities like Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal are known for their vibrant international societies, making it easier for students to feel at home and integrate into the local culture.
Improved Post-Study Work Opportunities
One of Canada’s standout features is its favorable post-study work environment. International students can work part-time during their studies without a work permit. Additionally, starting from September 2022, students are allowed to work off-campus without a permit, enhancing their ability to gain practical experience while studying. Canada also offers pathways to permanent residency through programs like the Graduation Mobility Pathway, which allows students to stay and work in Canada after graduation. This opportunity to gain work experience and potentially secure long-term residency makes Canada an attractive choice for international students.

Lower Tuition Fees
While tuition fees for international students in Canada are higher than for domestic students, they are still relatively affordable compared to countries like the U.S. and the U.K. Canadian universities offer competitive fees across various programs, including engineering, medicine, business, and computing. The overall cost of studying in Canada is lower than in many other popular destinations, making it a cost-effective choice for obtaining a world-class education.
Conclusion
Canada’s affordable education, inclusive culture, and robust post-graduation opportunities make it an exceptional choice for international students. Its high-quality institutions, diverse communities, and supportive immigration policies create an environment where students can thrive both academically and personally. For personalized guidance on selecting the right programs and institutions, seek advice from experienced overseas education consultants. They can help you navigate the options and make the most of your educational journey in Canada.

Canada work permits enable eligible foreign nationals to work temporarily in the country. Among the various Canada work permit programs available, the options fall into two main categories: the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP) and the International Mobility Program (IMP). The key distinction is that TFWP requires a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA), whereas IMP does not. Most work permit programs require a job offer from a Canadian employer, with permit validity varying from days to years.
