Hey Alice! Really random question but what cons happen in Toronto besides fan expo? (Specifically looking for June augest ones) I swear there’s more. I’m not sure who else to ask this or where to find con information haha. Alternatively do you know of con information in Vancouver canada? Thank you
hi! fellow torontonian spotted 🫡🫵
for large scale anime/gaming/geek cons in toronto, there's: - toronto comic con (march)* - toronto game expo (march) - anime north (may) - anime fiesta (july) - beware as i heard this one is not great for events but maybe they'll improve, smaller event - fan expo (aug)* - furnal equinox (march) - toronto game expo (nov) * good luck applying to these bc the rebooking rate is INSANE and you will also be out a $800 deposit for a whole year
yeah............. toronto has a huge population but as you can see there's really not much in the summer LMAO which is why these few cons are really important to us. and canadians opt to travel for cons during the mid summer season. americans have it good haha. here are some other popular ones: - g anime (jan, gatineau QC) - yeti con (june, blue mountain ON) - ai kon (july, winnipeg MB) - animethon (aug, edmonton AB) - otakuthon (aug, montreal QC) usually same weekend - the only out of province event i attend currently, i really like otakuthon and personally i did really well, but i have heard from others that the profits this year were not as good as last year. (keep in mind the small business culture is huge and competitive right now) - london comic con (sept, london ON) during off-peak season there are also a few markets (bamtori studio has been hosting them every few months and they're so goated!!!), there've been more buzz on markets in recent years as the small business scene boomed. personally i don't think my art suits markets demographic so i don't apply for them/ this post will not cover markets. vancouver events: - anime revolution (aug) usually same weekend as animethon and otakuthon. i have heard conflicting opinions on anirevo so please do your own research on this con. rebooking rate is crazy. - fan expo vancouver (feb) for any informa canada run events, be aware the rebooking rate is extremely high. - emerald city comic con (march) - forgive me for putting an american con here
if i had to travel to the west coast id pick emerald city comic con, i heard it's pretty good to travel out to (and the other ones id have no chance of getting in anyways) if anything i know about these events through hearsay and by googling ahaha. if a con is good then more artists will recommend them generally. you can also join artist alley network international (AANI, you can google them for the application to their discord). personally im not sure how long ill be doing cons as i've been putting off working on my animation portfolio for so long (animation is kind of grim rn so a lot of us have been relying on cons)... and im not sure if ill travel beyond montreal next year... but yeah... hope this helps!

v off topic but what is up with project moon lately ive been vaguely aware of workplace stuff happened but dunno much
id ask u if ur ok w/ explaining it to me but if u cant dw bout it
hope u have a nice day btw
I don't mind but be aware I'm not fluent In korean nor abut the social climate there 😔 and thank you!
I'm gonna recall what I know so it's going to be long, but long story short, Kim Jihoon (Project Moon's CEO) fired the CG artist vellmori immediately after some guys from korea's equivalent of 4chan (DCInside) accused her of being a feminist.
This isn't the first time something like this happened in the korean gaming industry, but this particular event kind of uncovered a whole lot of issues in other things, from Project Moon's shortcomings to as far as the korean gaming industry itself.
I don't know where to start, but the whole thing happened because a beach mini-event featured one of the female character in a full wetsuit and not in a bikini, nevermind that Project Moon is known for rarely, if ever feature fanservice. A group of people from DCInside directed their outrage to the main art director and artist of said character's skin, but once they found out that the artist is a man, they pivoted to the CG artist, despite the fact she's not responsible any character design in the game.
DCInside started to give Limbus Company a negative review on all platforms it was on for it's "feminist agenda" demanding for vellmori to be fired, and when PM took too long with complying with their demand, ten people took it to themselves and stormed Project Moon's office. The situation seemed dire, we tried supporting Project Moon because we thought they weren't the type of company who would side with people like them.
PM responded by posting an announcement (only in korean at the time to try to keep the international fanbase in the dark) that vellmori was to be dismissed from her position for "causing controversy"
Said controversy is that DCinside dug a deleted post vellmori retweeted when she was a teen speaking out against a spycam epidemic in women's bathroom. That was five years ago and long deleted, but apparently it was still a valid reason to dismiss her from the company.
Vellmori mentioned in a korean newspaper that Kim Jihoon fired her over the phone at midnight when he was still in Japan in preparation for a game expo. This was before Project Moon released any follow-up statement after the first one.
Project Moon then released another statement that vellmori was merely dismissed, but not fired, and that they aren't disclosing anything more to protect her. They also threatened to sue everyone who spread misinformation, which is hard to define since PM wasn't clearing up anything.
During this many former employees came forward about the poor management they experienced and the lack of employee protection in PM. The visual artist of Leviathan, the prologue comic/novel for Limbus Company mentioned that she was forced within a tight schedule (a chapter every week) without room to make buffer pages in her schedule. When she tried to negotiate for a scheduling change, Kim Jihoon instead cut her contract short.
The english translator for both Limbus Company and it's twitter announcements, in a separate incident, was harassed and cyberstalked on social media, yet Project Moon did nothing to defend him. Kim Jihoon has proven before that he could stand up for his employees, like he did with PM's cafe when customers harassed the staffs. Granted, the translator said that he doesn't want anyone to criticize Project Moon for not defending him, but his letter is still depressing to read, especially when he revealed he had to work on chapter 3.5 overnight while his family member was diagnosed with cancer.
MIMI, the artist for Lobotomy Corporation's spinoff comic Wonderlab, shortly took down the comic due to dissatisfaction with the company.
A youth union was created in response to the controversy, demanding a clear announcement over vellmori's employment status and to compensate her.
PM responded that yes, vellmori has been fired, and claims that she wishes her privacy to be protected to avoid revealing anything further about her dismissal, even though she had already talked to a newspaper about it.
And until this day Project Moon went on a crusade against everyone who directly speak against their decision, from suing peaceful truck protestors and unions, and yet they barely addressed the incels from DCInside who started this all in the first place. The infamy of this incident also brought attention to the rampant misogyny in South Korea, especially in the gaming industry.
Honestly this isn't the first time they folded from the slightest bit of pressure, but the first time it was because a review bomb on Library of Ruina because some blokes didn't like the original ending. I don't know. I feel like they're going to foster a fanbase that thinks they can get whatever they want if they cause a big enough ruckus when things don't go their way. I don't want to be part of that so I've been steering away from the fanbase even if I'm still fond of PM's stories.
Sorry this got long and I don't have complete sources, most of this is what I recall from witnessing it firsthand and I really don't feel like looking for Xitter posts 😭 this post is more complete if you'd like to read more.

im packing to move soon and i thought as long as im packing i could show off my bookshelf, one row at a time, starting with the bottom: graphic novels, comics, and puzzle books
Tumblr media
most of ex nihilo i still have in its original physical form. im not too sentimental for it, but it is hard to throw it away. if theres literally anything ive drawn that you want, just lmk and ill ship it to you 👀
Tumblr media Tumblr media
my old notebook
Tumblr media
i fucking LOVE this graphic novel. i found it at a thrift shop, signed by the author, which probably means whoever this belonged to was a kickstarter backer for the project. it tells the story of a young artist and his wife being revisited by an old friend just released from prison. a story about drug use, lost friendships, and how your own memory can lie to you, and by extension, lie to your loved ones. maybe the very last line of the novel inspired the name of my comic?
Tumblr media
seconds is an amazing graphic novel by bryan lee o'malley, who might be better known for creating scott pilgrim. this is a contemporary fairy tale of the disastrous consequences you might face if you could literally undo anything that might happen to you during the day, and how katie, a restaurant manager learns to abuse that power to send her own world crashing down around her. find it, i know its for free online somewhere but if you buy it thats even better!!
Tumblr media
moon moth started as a short story by jack vance (who in his own right created rules for an internal magic system within his stories now called "vancian magic") about a sci fi murder mystery on a utopian planet called Sirene, a planet so accustomed to luxury that crafting and artistic expression are the sole pastime. everyone always wears a mask on sirene, and the social order is complex to learn and navigate...all communication is done through musical accompaniment as well. how will ambassador edward thissel know who is friend or foe??
Tumblr media
i havent read 'everything is teeth' yet
Tumblr media
a graphic novelisation of one episode of angel where a tv station is sucking souls out of kids and angel becomes a felt puppet
Tumblr media
a great graphic novel going over the history of anti scientific conspiracies, like why ppl think the moon landing was fake, homeopathy, the quack history of chiropractics, anti vax, global warming denial, evolution misunderstandings, and fracking
Tumblr media
what the hell?
Tumblr media
a collection of wondermark, which i would classify as having the old found artstyle of married to the sea, plus the zany writing of oglaf. its a webcomic, look fer it!
Tumblr media
part graphic, part novel. the fog mound explores a world of talking animals where humanity's existence is rumored as a legend. but thelonious chipmunk has proof: an old postcard with a human city on it. when thelonious accidentally gets lost and finds himself in the very city on his postcard, he has to wonder...where did the humans go? are there any left?
Tumblr media
i met jeremy at an expo a few years ago and regularly visit him every year now whenever hes at a showcase or expo. putting watercolor illustrations to music, writing little creepy poems, fan art of all kinds of franchises, i just really vibe with his artwork.
Tumblr media
like isnt she just gorgeous???
Tumblr media
issues 3-6 of kingdom of loathing bc ill always be such a die hard fan of the loathing games, especially the stick figure mmo that started it all

Convention Blog Post
Ironically enough, I went to Metrocon in Tampa just earlier this month! I am currently interning in Ohio, but that 4th of July week I had came back to Florida to visit family and friends. My friends, who are interested in cosplay, and I wanted to go somewhere, and I have already been taking another Japanese class this summer C so why not just attend Metrocon (we also really like Tampa). It was definitely an unforgettable experience and all very knew to me as I have never cosplayed before or even watched any animes, besides Fairytail. I am glad I went, even though I didn’t know any characters or shows, my friends tried their best to explain them to me. More than anything, I enjoyed the deep dive into a world of anime fandom and youth culture which brought thousands of fans and vendors in celebration of pop culture. At the time, I wasn’t thinking much about anything, but just living in the moment. I am just now reflecting on my experience there. While I did enjoy going, I don’t think I would go again just because I am not fully immersed myself in anime/manga, but I am always happy to try new things and so I am glad to say I have gone.
From the moment I walked into the convention center, the atmosphere was electric. With the lobby filled with cosplayers, I felt underdressed and out of place. It was interesting seeing everyone pay tribute to their favorite characters from different series. People really are creative! I didn’t buy anything, nor did I sit in on any panels or workshops. I more so walked through just to get a good idea of what happens in these types of events. None of the collectibles or crafts caught my attention, but seeing it catch the attention of my peers and other cosplayers in the hall was interesting to watch and observe as their faces lit up with something they are so passionate about. The most striking aspect was the sense of community and belonging that the convention fostered among young people. IAs we have talked about, fandom provides a space for identity formation and a social connection, especially for people who feel isolated in a regular school or work environment. The way attendees interacted with each other made me happy because I know the conventions serves as a safe haven in a way for people to express their passions without any fear or judgement from others.
This is more than just a form of entertainment for them, it plays into their cultural identity, whether it be their own culture or not. The way individuals would present themselves and, based off the merchandise they’d buy, it was evident they were eager to celebrate themselves and their identities openly and proudly. It sort of reminded me of Indian conventions which are actually also held in Tampa. Indian expos gather the Indian community where vendors sell desi style clothing, traditional food, and holds choregraphed dances ranging from Bollywood hip-hop fusion to traditional/classic elements. I just know how at home I feel in these events, and I was happy to see others feel the same way at Metrocon. I enjoyed how hybridity was celebrated with the influence of both Western comics and Japanese anime and culture. I honestly didn’t give much thought to anything in the moment, but I am glad and in awe to be reflecting on everything now and see how things look from different perspectives once you know the history behind it or the reason as to why conventions like these occur and why they have become so popular. As we continue to explore the role of fandom in cultural identity formation, experiences like Metrocon offer valuable insights into the evolving landscape of youth culture.
P.S. I felt awkward taking a pic when I wasn't even dressed correctly, but I tried to take an aesthetic pic of my friend!
