Erling Haaland stood on the bench in the Copenhagen-controlled Manchester City match and Juventus stunned Maccabi Haifa
City, who won their first three Group G matches, would have secured a place in the last 16 with their victory. This could still happen if Borussia Dortmund avoided defeat at home to Sevilla. This was only the second time that City had drawn 0-0 in the Champions League group stage. Erling Haaland watches from the sidelines.attributed to him:GT “We started really well with number 11 and then had an hour and 10 minutes to hang on,” Guardiola said. “When we had the ball we were smart. It’s a good point.” It was the second point for last-placed Copenhagen in the group, which preserved his chances of reaching third place and relegating to the Europa League play-off. “It was another tough match against one of the best teams in the world,” said Copenhagen midfielder Marko Stamenic. “I think we can leave the field proud of ourselves and our team. We fought until the last minute.” At the start of another early match on Wednesday, Juventus’ 2-0 loss to Maccabi Haifa set a new low for the Serie A side, but coach Massimiliano Allegri remained firm and ruled out resignation despite the Italian club’s poor performance. The defeat, which came thanks to Omar Atsili’s double, not only left third-placed Juventus’ hopes of qualifying for the knockout stages hanging by a thread, but also jeopardized their chances of qualifying for the Europa League if they did not finish third in Group H. . Juventus are unbeaten in three of their first four Champions League group stage matches, and although club president Andrea Agnelli said he was ashamed of their performance, he added that Allegri would remain in the job. “He’s right (to be ashamed), the first half was the worst,” Allegri told Sky Sports. When asked if he would tender his resignation, he added, “No, I will definitely not step down. Because it is a challenge now. When it becomes more difficult, it is more beautiful. We must come out of it with courage and desire.” The results of the fourth round of the Champions League Wednesday (AED): Maccabi Haifa 2 Juventus 0 Copenhagen 0 Manchester City 0 Paris Saint-Germain 1 Benfica 1 Dinamo Zagreb 1 RB Salzburg 1 Borussia Dortmund 1 Seville 1 AC Milan 0 Chelsea 2 Celtic 0 Leipzig 2 Shakhtar Donetsk 1 Real Madrid 1 Thursday matches: 3.45 am: Napoli – Ajax, Atlético Madrid – Club Brugge. 6 am: Bayer Leverkusen – Porto, Rangers – Liverpool, Barcelona – Inter Milan, Viktoria Plzen – Bayern Munich, Tottenham – Eintracht Frankfurt, Sporting – Marseille. It was the fourth loss for Juventus in six matches in all competitions, which does not bode well before the Turin derby on Saturday in Turin. Juventus is in eighth place in the league, 10 points behind leaders Napoli. For Haifa, it was her first win in a Champions League match since beating Olympiacos Piraeus in the group stage in 2002. loading “It’s hard to explain (the mistake), we just need to stay silent because we didn’t do well from a character point of view,” Allegri said. “We need to get out of this situation and remain silent. Our tactics lack heart and passion. We are playing very individually, and we have to go back to being a team.” AFP, Reuters Watch every match in Champions LeagueAnd the European League And the European Conference League on Stan Sport. Liverpool, Chelsea through to Champions League last 16 as Ajax go out - football
Holders Liverpool safely negotiated Tuesday’s trip to Salzburg to take their place in the last 16 of this season’s UEFA Champions League while Chelsea are also through, but Ajax suffered a shock group-stage exit.Six clubs secured spots in the draw for the first knockout round in their final group games, with Ajax and Inter Milan the big names to miss out.Jurgen Klopp’s side just needed to draw in Austria to keep alive their bid to retain the European Cup, and they duly beat Salzburg 2-0 thanks to two goals in two second-half minutes, by Naby Keita and Mohamed Salah.Keita headed in Sadio Mane’s cross against his former club to put Liverpool ahead in the 57th minute, and Salah then rounded goalkeeper Cican Stankovic to score from an improbably tight angle. The result allowed Liverpool to progress as Group E winners, with Napoli going through in second place, while Salzburg are out and drop into the Europa League instead.“What a team,” Klopp told BT Sport. “What an effort. It was a tough game.”“We scored two wonderful goals. We could have scored six or seven which is crazy. We won the group, we won the game, all good.”- Ancelotti sacked by Napoli -Napoli made sure of their progress by trouncing Genk 4-0 in Italy with Arkadisuz Milik scoring a first-half hat-trick, the third goal coming from the penalty spot.Dries Mertens converted another spot-kick in the second half to seal the win, but the Italian side still sacked coach Carlo Ancelotti in the wake of the game. There was high drama in Group H as Valencia beat Ajax 1-0 in Amsterdam, Rodrigo Moreno’s strike taking the Spaniards through to the last 16 at the expense of last season’s semi-finalists, and leaving their hosts stunned.Ajax had again been impressive this season but were left to rue their inability to win either of their two matches against Chelsea, as Frank Lampard’s team progressed in second place, a point ahead of the Dutch giants, thanks to a 2-1 victory against Lille.Tammy Abraham and Cesar Azpilicueta netted first-half goals for Chelsea, who held on after Loic Remy pulled one back for Lille.Chelsea, the 2012 Champions League winners, finish level on points with Valencia but come second due to their inferior head-to-head record.“The Champions League is where Chelsea belong. We knew it was a tough group. We had to fight and recover after losing against Valencia at home in our first game,” Azpilicueta told BT Sport.Borussia Dortmund needed to better Inter’s result and they did so, beating Slavia Prague 2-1 to progress in second.Julian Brandt got their winner after Jadon Sancho’s opener was cancelled out by Tomas Soucek, with Dortmund holding on after Julian Weigl was sent off.Meanwhile, Lyon went through in dramatic fashion in Group G, coming from behind to draw 2-2 with RB Leipzig. The Germans were two goals ahead at half-time thanks to two penalties, one scored by Emil Forsberg and the other by Timo Werner. However, Houssem Aouar’s curler gave Lyon hope just after the break and Memphis Depay levelled matters with eight minutes left.Leipzig win the group, while the draw proved enough for Lyon to finish second because Zenit Saint Petersburg lost 3-0 to Benfica in Lisbon.Franco Cervi gave Benfica the lead before a Pizzi penalty and a Sardar Azmoun own goal, as the Portuguese side finish third. Luciano Passirani Banned by TV Show for Racist Comment on Romelu Lukaku | Bleacher Report
Emilio Andreoli/Getty Images
Italian football pundit Luciano Passirani has been banned from appearing on television show Qui Studio a Voi Stadio after he aimed racist comments at Inter Milan striker Romelu Lukaku on air.
Passirani said Lukaku—who joined Inter from Manchester United this summer—will “[kill] you” if you go one-on-one against him. He then added that the only way you can stop Lukaku is if you give the player “10 bananas to eat,” per Marcus Christenson of the Irish Times:
“Lukaku is one of the best signings that Inter could have made. I don’t see another player like him on any other team in Italy. He is one of the strongest, I like him a lot because he has that strength: he is the twin of (Duvan) Zapata at Atalanta.
“They have something extra that the rest don’t have, and then they score the goals and drag your team forward. This guy kills you in the one-on-ones, if you try to challenge him you wind up on the floor. Either you have 10 bananas to eat, that you give to him, or…”
Fabio Ravezzani, programme director for the Telelombardia show, turned down Passirani’s apology and said the pundit wouldn’t participate in future broadcasts, per BBC Sport.
“Mr. Passirani is 80 years old and to compliment Lukaku he used a metaphor that turned out to be racist. I think it was a terrible lack of momentary lucidity. I cannot tolerate any kind of errors, even if momentary,” he said.
Lukaku was the target of monkey chants from Cagliari fans when he scored a 2-1 penalty winner on September 1, and Passirani’s comment was a reminder of the abuse Lukaku suffered.
The remark appears to be an attempted compliment regarding the strong form of Lukaku—who scored twice in his first two games for Inter—but has instead strengthened concerns with racism in Italian football.
Journalist Chris Lepkowski touched on the warped culture among some fans and pundits:
Chris Lepkowski @chrislepkowski
Luciano Passirani’s comments show just how much needs to be done to eradicate the permeating culture of racism in Italian football. On what level did he think that statement was acceptable?
Sportswriter Siavous Fallahi posted a screenshot of Lukaku’s reply to the racist abuse from the Cagliari fans. Lukaku called on social media to make more of an effort tackling the issue:
Siavoush Fallahi @SiavoushF
Lukaku only said he suffered from racial abuse which he did and put it in a bigger perspective. Not sure what’s up with the “not all italians” thing.
Also “racism doesn’t exist in Italy” is incredible to read https://t.co/Rkx6BECyaN
Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly was the target of racist abuse while facing Inter in December 2018, while former Juventus striker Moise Kean—now at Everton—was also targeted at Cagliari in April this year.
Koulibaly recently told Il Corriere dello Sport (h/t ESPN FC) that Serie A should look to copy the Premier League in its more proactive response to racism in the sport.
Journalist Raphael Honigstein recently appeared on BBC 5 Live Sport and said Italian football authorities have turned a blind eye to the problem for too long:
BBC 5 Live Sport @5liveSport
‘The point is… Italian football has too long ignored these situations’
Speaking on this week’s Euro Leagues, @honigstein believes more needs to be done to stop racism after Lukaku was subjected to racist chants last week.

Passirani’s ban from Qui Studio a Voi Stadio is an acknowledgment that such remarks don’t belong in football—in Italy or elsewhere.

English clubs all managed to avoid the Group of Death as Tottenham, Manchester City Liverpool and Chelsea have all received favorable draws for the Champions League group stage.
There was a case of history that repeated itself when Manchester City was drawn for the third consecutive season with the Ukrainian champions Shakhtar Donetsk. The side of Pep Guardiola also faces Dinamo Zagreb and Champions League-debutants Atalanta.
Liverpool will renew a well-known rivalry, as well as in combination with Series A second in Napoli for a second consecutive season. Red Bull Salzburg and Genk complete group E for the side of Jurgen Klopp.
Frank Lampard & # 39; s Chels presented the best draw from the English side while completing Group H with Ajax, Valencia and LOSC Lille.
The Blues return to the league after winning the last Europa League against Arsenal in Baku, Azerbaijan last season.
Ajax has seen a number of important divisions, including Captain Matthijs van Ligt and midfielder Frenkie van Jong, and are considered a weaker opponent than the party who was stunned in the semi-final of the past season.
Lille is strong, but was one of the favorable teams to face after the Ligue 1-side star man Nicolas Pepe lost to Arsenal this summer for £ 72 million.

Champions League: How teams can qualify for the knockout rounds
The top two teams qualify for the round of 16, with the third-place team dropping into the Europa League and the bottom club eliminated from Europe.
If two teams are level on points, head-to-head record is the first tie-breaker.
Qualified for round of 16: Barcelona Eliminated: Lokomotiv Moscow, Monaco, PSV Eindhoven
GROUP A
Borussia Dortmund: Need a point at home to Club Brugge to qualify.
Atletico Madrid: Will be through if they secure victory at home to Monaco, or if Brugge do not win at Dortmund.
Club Brugge: Must win both their remaining games, away to BVB and home to Atleti, to even have a chance.
Monaco: Have been eliminated and must get at least four points from their remaining two games to make the Europa League.
GROUP B
Barcelona: Have qualified as only one of Spurs and Inter Milan are able to overtake them. Will secure top spot with a win away to PSV on Matchday 5.
Inter Milan: Need a point away to Spurs on Nov. 28 to secure their place.
Tottenham: Must win at home to Inter to remain in contention, and will then likely need at least a point away to Barcelona.
PSV Eindhoven: Have been eliminated and need a minimum of four points to make the Europa League.
GROUP C
Liverpool: Will book their place with a win at PSG on Nov. 28 if Red Star fail to win at Napoli. Would also be guaranteed to go through should they win at home to Napoli on Matchday 6 by at least two goals.
Napoli: A victory over Red Star would see them through if PSG do not beat Liverpool.
Paris Saint-Germain: Will likely be eliminated if they lose at home to Liverpool, but a draw or win very much keeps them in the hunt with Liverpool to play Napoli on Matchday 6.
Red Star Belgrade: A draw away to Napoli would keep them in contention, and they could then hope a home win over PSG might send them through at the Italian club's expense.
GROUP D
Porto: Will be through with a draw at home to Schalke, or if Galatasaray do not to win at Lokomotiv Moscow. A Porto victory would secure top spot.
Schalke: Through with a victory away at Porto, or if Galatasaray fail to win at Lokomotiv.
Galatasaray: Have to win at Lokomotiv and realistically hope Porto beat Schalke to stay in contention.
Lokomotiv Moscow: Have been eliminated but could still earn a place in the Europa League, though they would need to win at home to Gala first.
Groups E to G have two rounds of games to play, the first of which comes on Wednesday.
GROUP E
Ajax and Bayern Munich are in control of the group, on seven points with identical records and four points ahead of Benfica. Ajax will book their place in the round of 16 if they can win at Benfica on Wednesday, and that result would also allow Bayern to secure safe passage with a victory at home to rock-bottom AEK Athens. While a draw at home to Ajax would keep Benfica mathematically in the hunt, they need to win that game to bring themselves truly back into contention. AEK will have to win all three of their remaining games to have a chance of going through.
GROUP F
It is tighter in this group, with Manchester City a point ahead of Lyon and both Hoffenheim and Shakhtar Donetsk a further three points back. But City can book their place with a win at home to Shakhtar, should Lyon pick up a victory at home to Hoffenheim. Lyon cannot qualify on Matchday 4, but Hoffenheim would be eliminated if they lose to Lyon and City beat Shakhtar. However, if Hoffenheim or Shakhtar can pick up an away win next time out, it will make the group very interesting.
GROUP G
Roma are top of the group on nine points after winning away to CSKA Moscow in the early match on Wednesday. No team can qualify on Matchday 4, though Real Madrid will go level with Roma should they win at Viktoria Plzen and both would have a five-point cushion to CSKA. Plzen will be eliminated should they lose at home to Madrid.
GROUP H
Valencia went second in the group by beating Young Boys in Wednesday's early game, pushing Manchester United down into third. Juventus have a 100 percent record and will be through should they win at home to United. Jose Mourinho's men will move back into the top two if they can get a point in Turin, but it's looking like the final-day meeting of Valencia and United in Spain on Dec. 12 will be decisive. Young Boys only have a slim chance of making it through.

What you need to know about the UEFA Champions League group stage draw
Cristiano Ronaldo gets to play Manchester United again, Liverpool got screwed, and Group A is a hipster paradise.
32 teams learned their fate in the UEFA Champions League group stage draw on Thursday, and some are happier with their path to the knockout stage than others. The likes of Bayern Munich, Manchester City and Real Madrid will be thrilled that they have simple paths to a top seed and a quarterfinal appearance. Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, Liverpool, Juventus and Manchester United will be less thrilled.
Here’s how the draw shook out and what you need to know.
Must watch: Ronaldo vs. United
Cristiano Ronaldo has faced off against his former club just once in the UEFA Champions League, in the Round of 16 in 2013. He knocked them out of the competition too, scoring in both legs. It’ll be exciting to see him grace the Old Trafford pitch again, and just like in 2013, he’ll be expected to get the better of the club where he became a star. Juventus and United will play twice, with the exact dates still TBA.
Toughest: Group C
Paris Saint-Germain and Liverpool might have both been strongly favored to win their groups in a different draw. 538 has both rated as top-7 teams in the world. They’ll not only have to deal with each other, but also with Napoli, who retained all of its key players after giving Juventus a run for its money in Serie A last season. Someone is going to be very bitter when they get knocked out, and will become the instant favorite to win the Europa League.
Runner up: Group B
While not as top-heavy as Group C, Group B does not have a weak link like Red Star. Instead, all three of the teams below Barcelona will feel like they can fight for second place. Tottenham Hotspur is the favorite, but Inter Milan added big names like Radja Nainggolan, Stefan de Vrij, Sime Vrsaljko and Keita Balde this summer. PSV held onto “Chucky” Hirving Lozano despite interest from bigger clubs, and he’s scoring at will in the Netherlands. No one will have an easy game in this group.
Hipster’s choice: Group A
If you’re more interested in up-and-coming stars and fun games than big names, Group A is where it’s at. Atlético Madrid might have its strongest squad ever, Christian Pulisic is still balling for Borussia Dortmund, and AS Monaco has reinvested the Kylian Mbappe money into a slew of entertaining young talents.
LOL: Group D
A couple years ago, UEFA changed the draw rules to give automatic Pot 1 placements to the champions of the top seven leagues. The seventh best league in Europe is the Russian Premier League, and its champion is Lokomotiv Moscow, who doesn’t have an impressive recent history in this competition. They got lucky in the draw too, so two of Lokomotiv, Porto, Schalke and Galatasaray are guaranteed to make the round of 16. If none of those teams makes the quarterfinals, expect increased calls for serious changes to the Champions League group stage.

Champions League draw reaction Premier League clubs happy difficult for Spain’s big three
Alejandro Moreno and Ross Dyer rank Manchester City, Chelsea, Tottenham and Liverpool in terms of who got the hardest group draw in the UEFA Champions League.
ESPN FC’s Alejandro Moreno speaks of Virgil Van Dijk’s importance to Liverpool, after the Dutch star-man was awarded UEFA player of the year.
The draw for the UEFA Champions League group stage took place in Monaco on Thursday and, as ever, threw up some intriguing story lines. Mark Ogden picks his highlights and makes some predictions.
Jump to: Group A | B | C | D | E | F | G | H
English clubs get it easy
It is the luck of draw, but while the likes of Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid got groups with heavyweight rivals, the Premier League’s quartet will all be happy with their outcomes.
Tottenham landed Bayern Munich, but will expect to overcome Olympiakos and Red Star Belgrade, while Liverpool and Manchester City will expect to coast through as group winners and Chelsea are favoured to take Group H. Another year, another Man City vs. Shakhtar clash
The two clubs were paired together in the group stage for the third successive season, so it might take an imaginative publicity campaign to tempt supporters to turn out for this fixture again. City’s executives will be happy to land yet another group lacking big-name glamour, but their fans might have wished for a bit more star quality.
Group F is the most difficult
Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund and Inter were drawn together in Group F, alongside Slavia Prague, whose cheerful directors chuckled at the prospect of three huge games in the Czech capital. It will be different for the hierarchy at the other three, however, with concerns over missing a top-two spot due to the strength of competition.
Messi and Ronaldo get along
In recent years, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have sat stony-faced with each other, as they wait to discover who has won the Player and Forward of the Year awards. This time around, the pair were laughing and joking — mainly at Eric Cantona’s speech — before the prizes were announced. Messi claimed best forward, but both missed out to Virgil van Dijk for the big one.
Eric Cantona
Having been given the UEFA President’s Award, convention dictated that Cantona give an acceptance speech. Dressed in jeans, creased shirt and flat cap, the former Manchester United forward made the most of his moment by quoting Shakespeare and discussing science and the ageing of cells, before closing by saying “I love football.” All of which left the audience utterly bewildered.
Matchday 1 of the UEFA Champions League is on Sept. 17 and 18.
Group A: PSG and Real Madrid go through
Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid meet in heavyweight clashes and while both will expect to progress to the Round of 16, the story of this group is likely to be about which team finishes top and earns a seeding in the knockout stages. Finishing second could lead to a nightmare draw against another Champions League big-hitter. Galatasaray and Club Brugge, meanwhile, will enjoy a tough battle for the Europa League spot that comes with third place.
B: Bayern Munich and Tottenham go through
Bayern and Tottenham will be favourites to qualify, but both must be wary of slipping up in hostile arenas when they travel to Athens and Belgrade for clashes with Olympiakos and Red Star. Red Star beat Liverpool 2-0 at home last season and are the dangerous outsider in this group; they could upset Spurs if last season’s runners-up fail to rediscover consistency. Olympiakos can be tough to beat at home, though they are something of a soft touch on the road.
C: Man City and Dinamo Zagreb go through
This group is basically a case of who will finish runners-up behind City, who are many observers’ favourites to win the Champions League. Shakhtar have the most recent pedigree in the competition, but Dinamo Zagreb and Atalanta will believe they can reach the knockout stages. Champions League debutants Atalanta may suffer from losing home advantage by playing at the San Siro in Milan rather than their 21,000-capacity stadium in Bergamo.
– UEFA Champions League group-by-group draw – Van Dijk beats Messi, Ronaldo to UEFA POTY award – Cantona delivers unique acceptance speech
D: Juventus and Leverkusen go through
Juventus and Atletico Madrid, who met in last season’s Round of 16, are the two to beat in this group, but Bayer Leverkusen could separate them. Juventus have strengthened in the summer, but questions hang over Atletico following the departures of Antoine Griezmann, Rodri and Diego Godin. Diego Simeone remains at the helm and has signed Portuguese wonderkid Joao Felix, but Leverkusen will be a tough nut to crack; Lokomotiv Moscow could also challenge for second.
E: Liverpool and Napoli go through
Reigning European champions Liverpool meet Napoli again, having played out two big encounters in last season’s group stage. Salzburg and Genk look to be making up the numbers, so Liverpool’s encounters with Napoli should decide who tops the group. Only a last-minute save by Alisson at Anfield stopped Napoli dumping Liverpool out at the group stage a year ago, so the Italians will fancy their chances.
F: Barcelona and Inter go through
The most eye-catching group of all features three previous winners — Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund and Inter — slugging it out for two places. Barca will expect to finish top, but Dortmund could beat them. Inter, meanwhile, are still an unknown quantity under Antonio Conte, but the nerrazzuri have plenty of quality so don’t take your eyes off this group. Slavia Prague make up the numbers.
G: Lyon and Leipzig go through
Zenit St Petersburg’s Twitter feed joked prior to the draw that the Russian champions were the top seed that everyone wanted to get. Benfica, Lyon and Leipzig were the lucky clubs in each pot and while this group might lack glamour, it is perhaps the most competitive, with all four teams in with a chance of qualifying. Lyon made it to the knockout stages last season and will be favourites.
H: Chelsea and Valencia go through
Europa League winners Chelsea will be delighted to get an Ajax team weakened by the departures of Matthijs de Ligt and Frenkie De Jong, as well as a Valencia outfit that scraped in as Spain’s fourth qualifier and Lille, who finished a distant second to PSG in France. Chelsea, with Christian Pulisic signed to replace Eden Hazard, are in transition under Frank Lampard, but should top this group.

Harry Kane Is Making His Case For World’s Best Striker
The stage has never been bigger for Tottenham Hotspur’s star striker Harry Kane. On Saturday, Spurs defeated Arsenal 1-0 in the North London Derby, one of the Premier League’s most storied rivalries. Now it’s off to Turin, Italy, where they’ll take on Juventus, one of Europe’s most storied clubs, in the Champions League round of 16. And there will never be a better moment than now for Kane to demonstrate, in front of the entire soccer-loving world, that he just might be the best pure striker alive.
Kane won himself a place in history when he notched his 100th English Premier League goal on a controversial stoppage time penalty two weekends ago against Liverpool. It’s an incredible achievement for a player who, at 24 years old, is only just now hitting the prime years of his career. Kane is not the fastest ever to the century mark, but only Alan Shearer managed it in fewer appearances than Kane’s 141, and only Wayne Rooney, Robbie Fowler and Michael Owen did it at a younger age. The milestone also just happens to come during the best season of Kane’s young career. If anything, his league-leading 23 goals undersells just how good Kane has been.
The top of the Premier League scoring table is increasingly split between traditional forwards, like Kane, Sergio Aguero and Romelu Lukaku, and more hybrid attacking wingers, like Mohamed Salah and Raheem Sterling, which makes it difficult to define what the center forward role looks like in modern soccer. The same problem crops up around the rest of Europe. Calling Lionel Messi a center forward undersells all the things he does for Barcelona, especially considering that he’s playing next to, behind and generally all around a truer version of a center forward in Luis Suarez. At Paris-Saint Germain, Neymar might be the best attacking player in the world, but he’s also a winger while Edinson Cavani occupies the center forward position. The line between forward and winger is increasingly blurry, and a list of the most productive scorers in Europe is littered with goal-scoring wingers. But Kane still sits atop that list.

Kane posts tremendous numbers in many scoring measures. Looking at goals from open play (so removing penalty shots and direct free kicks), Kane is scoring 0.8 goals per 90 minutes. That’s the third-best rate in Europe’s big five leagues,1 behind only Salah and Cavani. Kane has the second-most shots per 90 from open play as well, with 5.30. Only Cristiano Ronaldo, who is mired in a terrible shooting season, takes more shots, with 5.71 per 90. Only five other players are even over four shots per game: Roma’s Edin Dzeko, Napoli’s Lorenzo Insigne, Messi, Salah, and Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski.2
Kane is similarly at the top of the list when it comes to expected goals per 90 minutes. His 0.78 expected goals per 90 tracks pretty closely with his actual goals scored and is good for fifth best among players with at least 1,000 minutes, trailing only Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who just transferred to Arsenal, Gabriel Jesus of Manchester City, Ronaldo and Lewandowski. The fact that Kane’s finishing is roughly in line with his expected goals is an important marker of how he has developed from last season to this year.
His scoring on shots from open play actually remains essentially unchanged from last year, going from 0.81 to 0.80, but his expected goal rate last season was much lower, only 0.48. Finishing more chances than expected, as Kane did a year ago, is a real skill but it’s also almost impossible to do consistently, and players’ numbers are incredibly noisy and undergo wild fluctuations. Some of Kane’s goal scoring last season came on the types of wonderful finishes that typically fly over the bar, or on contested headers that usually glance just wide. In other words, if Kane’s current season were similar to last year, it’s very likely that his goal scoring would have gone down. Instead, Kane has upped his game, creating and taking more shots and better shots. Last season, Kane scored like a great striker, but he played like a very good one. This year, he’s both playing and scoring like one of the best in the game.
The case for Kane as one of the world’s best strikers is easy to make, but once you get up into the rarified air of players like Salah, Lewandowski and Aubameyang, differentiating between them becomes difficult. Where Kane stands out is in just how big a share of the team’s workload he takes on. Again looking at shots not including penalties and direct free kicks, there are 101 players in the top five leagues who have scored seven or more goals. Harry Kane takes 32.7 percent of his team’s shots when he’s on the field — none of the other 100 players are more involved. Ronaldo is second at 32.0 percent, Messi is third at 31.4. (Ronaldo and Messi, of course, both take a large number of direct free kicks that aren’t getting counted here, while Kane gets credit for all the shots he accumulates on set plays that aren’t direct free kicks. So Kane has some advantage that comes from how we’re defining the center forward role.)
Kane is similarly dominant when it comes to expected goals from these shots. When he’s on the field, he accounts for a whopping 41.7 percent of Spurs’ expected goals, the third most of this set of players. Only Antonio Sanabria of Real Betis, who is having an improbable season with seven goals in six substitute appearances, and Cristhian Stuani of the surprisingly competent Spanish side Girona are responsible for a higher percentage of their teams’ expected goals. This is the primary argument for Kane. While some players have scored more goals, and some players may have slightly higher underlying expected goals numbers, no strikers in the world have put up the gaudy numbers Kane has while accounting for as high a share of their team’s shooting and finishing.
Harry Kane isn’t a complete forward. His job isn’t to facilitate play, or bring wingers into the game, or create holes in the defense for his teammates to take advantage of. Tottenham Hotspur’s star striker does one thing: He scores. But that goal scoring has Tottenham challenging for a top-four place in the Premier League and has gotten Spurs into the knockout rounds of the Champions League. Nobody scores as much while accounting for as high a percentage of their team’s scoring. He’s the ultimate scoring forward, and at only 24 years old, he’s likely to be a dominant force for years to come.
