Staff Spotlight: Joanna Tatro
Joanna Tatro, or Jo, as she goes by, has been an integral part of the George L. Graziadio Center for several years. She began her life on campus as a student and teaching assistant before graduating and becoming a part-time lecturer as well as the Program Assistant for the Graziadio Center. Although we are sad to see her leave her assistant duties, she will continue to teach and is now working on a Translation Certificate. We asked Jo to reflect on her time at CSULB and what working for the Graziadio Center has meant to her:
Tell us a little bit about yourself and your time at CSULB.
I am an alumna of CSULB, holding MAs in French and Francophone Studies and Italian Studies, and I began my teaching journey as part of these programs. At first, class instruction was not my primary goal-I was pursuing a career in translation, and I still am, but teaching has been an integral part of my time here at CSULB and I absolutely love interacting with students, sharing my love of languages and cultures with them and coaching them into their own experiences through study-abroad, majors, minors, and involvement with community organizations such as NIAF, the National Italian American Foundation.
CSULB has given me opportunities I would never have thought possible, from organizing and speaking at conferences to interning for ELI Edizioni publishing house in Loreto, Italy. When I was asked to join the Graziadio Center as the Program Assistant, I was honored to have the chance to give back to a program that has given me so much. How do you think your experience in the Italian department will help you going forward?
It already has! After completing an internship for ELI, I was asked to work for them as their Outreach Coordinator here in the U.S., recruiting for their study abroad program in Recanati. I have also been hired at Long Beach City College to teach French and Italian this academic year, and have joined the CSULB faculty as a part-time lecturer. However, there have been so many other benefits to this program, such as being part of a community of like-minded intellectuals who strive to bring Italian into the lives of our students every day. I've formed incredible friendships with former classmates, who are now colleagues, and the mutual support we show one another inspires me daily. I am also very grateful to have learned from the outstanding instructors in not just the Italian program, but the RGRLL department as a whole. I've learned about different pedagogies from sitting in on their classes. I've been exposed to different disciplines from listening to them give presentations. I've also been introduced to different approaches to the educational experience in general by interacting with all the department faculty. What did you enjoy most about working for the Graziadio Center?
I would say that the most enjoyable part of this work was in working closely with faculty and students, on events, class visits, club activities, and special projects, such as the Telecollaborazione project co-organized with Diego Cortes Velasquez and Elena Nuzzo at Università Roma Tre. I also enjoyed the inter-departmental collaboration that occurred when the language programs worked together, and the support that faculty members showed for all the various events that we hosted.   What are your next career plans and long-term goals? Right now, I'm completing the Certificate in Translation Studies at CSULB, with plans to apply to PhD programs in Translation. I am looking forward to joining this exciting new field and one day, I'd like to teach Translation Studies to others. I also am currently translating an excerpt from a French novel that I hope to send out for consideration as a complete translated work. In short, I plan to make the translation of Romance Languages my life's work. For now, though, I am content to continue teaching language courses and encouraging students to explore other avenues through language study, especially study-abroad. Are there any final thoughts or personal anecdotes from your time in the Graziadio Center that you would like to share?
I would just like to add that it is my hope that I can continue to support this program through my teaching and my passion for the Italian language and culture, and I'm very thankful to have been a small part of what the Graziadio Center has and will continue to accomplish for a long time to come.

Mini-Review: Cheer Boys!!
Disheartened with judo, college student Haruki "Haru" Bando was invited by his childhood friend Kazuma Hashimoto to create "BREAKERS", an unprecedented boys' cheerleading team. Can their motley group of amateurs pull it off?
Sometimes I pick up a show because I’m hoping for something mild to only pay half attention to, and sometimes that backfires because it turns out the show is really good. That’s what happened here.
Loosely based based on the real-life Waseda University all-male cheer team Shockers, (and how loosely I don’t know, maybe just that Cheer Boys!! is also about an all-male university team) this was a sweet and colorful story about, in the timeless tradition of sports stories, a group of people coming together to Do a Sport With Friendship.
Tumblr media
One thing I really enjoyed was that the characters are all in college (university), so they’re a bit older than the usual sorts shows I’ve seen, and that gives the characters a great reason to be independent of their families.
Our main character is Haru, college freshman and shy boy from a judo family with a judo sister and who really doesn’t want to do judo anymore. So when his best friend and fellow judo teammate Kazu suggests they both quit and start a cheerleading club, Haru is...well, not on board with the second half of that idea.
But he comes around. Like we knew he would, because it’s the idea behind the entire show.
Tumblr media
First order of business: recruiting additional members so they can actually perform a routine. First recruit: this dork:
Tumblr media
Wataru was my favorite character: a serious guy who likes to quote famous lines and makes up for his initial lack of skill with dedication and an inability to feel embarrassed. He ended up with some great lines.
Tumblr media
The fact that they end up with recruits, put on a decent show at a school festival, and end up with more recruits and a goal of a regional competition isn’t a surprise--it would be surprising if none of that happened. Instead, the tension in the story comes mainly from personality clashes and individual worries.
Haru doesn’t face pushback form his parents, but his sister seems to resent him for giving up judo. Club members have differing levels of commitment, and irritate each other. Another cheer team gets offended that a bunch of newbies decided they wanted to cheer, because you can’t have a sports story without someone judging you for, heaven forbid, not dedicating every breathe and thought in your entire life to Sport.
Tumblr media
oh no, people in my sport have more enthusiasm than talent
Tumblr media
I did get irritated in the middle when one of the inter-group personality clashes was getting out of hand. Luckily it only lasted for a few episodes but one member of the team was not only annoyed with, well, everyone else for not taking it as seriously as he did, but he also started lecturing others and making the team an unpleasant place to be.
I just wanted to be like, Dude, there is a way to bring up your issues and criticizing others to their face, when you are not a leader and haven’t taken this to leadership, is not it.
(It resolves, because this is a sports anime about the Power of Teamworkfriendship, but ugh.)
Tumblr media
But overall, it was a very fun show. I loved the character interactions--there are some great, funny lines, and it really did sounds like a bunch of college friends talking and joking a lot. Plus, even in animated form, cheer and gymnastics is fun to watch!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Verdict
English dub? Yes!
Visuals: Light and pretty! I was surprised when I started the first episode and found that it has a more shoujo style, but it’s very nice to watch.
Worth watching? Yes! It’s fun just to watch the characters interact, and the routines, but it’s also fun to watch a sports show that has fairly low stakes (this is an extracurricular club, no one’s life depends on them winning) and wraps up nicely (12 episodes).
Where to watch (USA, as of November 2020): Funimation (sub and dub); Blu-ray or BR/DVD combo

Sun Myung Moon’s ignorance – he “spoke to Buddha,” but thought he was Chinese!
Tumblr media
Moon’s ignorance and hubris continue unabated
by Allen Wood
The Inter-religious and International Federation for World Peace and the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification (both Moon front groups) placed a 24 page insert into the December 30, 2001 Washington Times (a Moon owned newspaper). This gift to the world includes a claim that it contains the actual testimony of 120 deceased religious leaders.
According to the text of the insert all 120 deceased religious leaders have been attending lectures on Mr. Moon’s teaching, the “Divine Principle” in the spirit world.
As a former leader in the Unification Church and as a former workshop director and lecturer on the “Divine Principle” and as a former witnessing captain at the University of Maryland in College Park Maryland and as a Former President of the Freedom Leadership Foundation several questions occurred to me as I was reading the glowing testimonies of the enthusiastic dead religious leaders who to a man (according to the insert) have all pledged their help and support to Mr. Moon in getting the world to acknowledge him as the Messiah.
How was the witnessing done in the spirit world for the lectures?
Were any of the religious leaders who attended the lectures brought there under false pretenses?
What kind of instructions were given and who gave them to those conducting the witnessing and recruiting?
How do “heavenly deception” (lying) and the Esau/Jacob principle (lying and stealing) work in the spirit world?
What were the consequences for those recruiters who failed to bring religious leaders to the lectures?
Did any of the religious leaders attending the lectures leave for personal reasons?
If, in fact, some did leave, how was their absence explained to those remaining at the lectures?
During my tenure in the Unification Church I met Mr. Moon on numerous occasions in Korea, in New York at Belvedere, at the National Headquarters in Washington D.C. and at the Upper Marlboro Center in Maryland.
I also spent a great deal of time with Rev. Young Oon Kim who was one of Mr. Moon’s missionaries to the U.S. in the early 60’s. I lived in the same house with her from August of 1969 ’til January of 1972. To her credit “Miss Kim”, as we called her, is the only interpreter of Moon’s pastiche theology who has been able to write a book about it that makes any pretence of honoring the conventions of grammar, and logic. The theology, for those who study it closely and for those interested in the chronology of Korean messianism, is largely derived from the teachings of [Kim Baek-moon and Chong Deuk-eun. Elder Park Tae-seon was a rival messiah to Mr. Moon.]
It was Miss Kim who first told me about Mr. Moon’s journeys in the spirit world. It was in the summer of 1970 shortly before I was to head off to Vietnam, Cambodia, Japan and finally Korea. I drove her down to Monticello from Washington. There in Thomas Jefferson’s gardens she talked to me about great men who had had mistresses, Jefferson, Roosevelt, Eisenhower. She said, these great men, these world movers cannot be held to the same standards of morality as the common man. She knew that the messiah that I was following had been “a pure virgin ’til he was 40 years old”. This is what she had taught us in America. At that time the general American members were not spiritually strong enough to withstand the real truth that he had been married at least three times. Miss Kim was trying to prepare me for what I might discover on my Asian trip, that “the pure virgin ’til he was 40” was just a little “heavenly deception” to tide me over until my commitment to “father and the movement” had transcended the narrow limits of my notions of honesty and integrity. A month later in Japan I was introduced at dinner to Sung-jin, Mr. Moon’s son by his first wife [Choi Seon-gil. Sung-jin was born on April 16, 1946]. In 1970 he was 25 years old.
On this same visit to Monticello I asked Miss Kim about Moon’s grasp of the spirit world. She said, “Well he may have been very open in the early days, but not so much now.” She went on to say that while she was accompanying him on one of his world tours (1965 I think) she had remarked his surprise, while they were in India, to discover that Buddha was not Chinese but Indian. I immediately thought, ‘well if he is talking to Jesus and Buddha and Mohammed and God all the time, why did he think that Buddha was Chinese? Was Buddha lying to Mr. Moon in the spirit world?
What if the 120 religious leaders who showed up to hear Mr. Moon’s lectures on the “Divine Principle” were not religious leaders at all but just hungry ghosts out for a laugh?”
