Your Space with the Perfect Curtains
When it comes to home decor, curtains often play a subtle yet significant role in tying a room together. They have the power to transform a space, adding warmth, style, and functionality all at once. Whether you’re aiming for a cozy ambiance in your living room or a serene atmosphere in your bedroom, choosing the right curtains can make all the difference.
Start by considering the mood you want to evoke in each room. For instance, flowing sheer curtains can create an airy and romantic feel, perfect for letting in natural light while maintaining privacy. On the other hand, thick blackout curtains are ideal for bedrooms where you want to create a peaceful retreat by blocking out light and noise. Don’t underestimate the impact of color and pattern — bold hues and striking designs can add personality and visual interest to an otherwise neutral space.
Additionally, think about the practical aspects of your curtains. Do you need them to insulate against cold drafts or filter out harsh sunlight? Look for curtains with thermal or blackout lining for added functionality. And don’t forget about the hardware — choosing the right curtain rods and accessories can enhance the overall look and ensure smooth functionality. With the right curtains in place, you can truly elevate the look and feel of any room in your home.

My internet goes back to the library today. It looks like the wait will be pretty short this time (maybe 2 weeks?).
In that time I hope to accomplish not much of anything. I hope to become a slug. To rest and to read a lot and maybe sort through some things in the house, but maybe not.
Time to lie fallow before the prep for the spring garden begins.
#i did drag home an adjustable wire shelving unit yesterday that will fit in the bathroom and work better for seed trays#(the bathroom is the warmest room in the house and has lots of sunlight so seed starting happens there)#i do need to rework my cold frames before Wednesday when the temperature drops--it's just been drizzling constantly here or it'd be done#i also dragged home two new free houseplants and four curtain panels#the curtains i'll use over the basement door as it's made of plywood instead of being an actual door and the curtains should help insulate#(when not in use)#also there were a lot of those cheap christmas food gifts passed along in the food waste pickup for the chickens this week#(you know like a festive mug with pkg of hot cocoa or a variety of tiny jams)#being unopened i poached them for me#so now have a tripartite tin of popcorn and pkg of flavored macarons and a block of bourbon fudge plus others#festive new year to me!#(don't worry the chickens got a massive amount of baby greens and chopped salad mixes and xmas leftovers which they greatly prefer)

10 Windows in 899 Square Feet
My home has a lot of windows. This is amazing, because the 630 sq ft apartment we had before this had two total and there was no light. I love that I have so many windows now. However, my home came stock standard with white blinds. I am not a fan of blinds. I hate raising them, lowering them, and twisting the little rod to get them to angle the blinds in the right direction. They are not really…

3 Ways to keep your home cool during the hotter months
Remember last summer, with its soaring temperatures and drought-like rain-free months? In preparation for the season to come, here are some ideas to keep your home cool this summer...
Collaborative feature Thinking back to last summer, I can remember the scorching days and the boiling nights spent in my home during the surprisingly hot months we had. All the grass on the village green turned brown and many plants couldn’t cope with the dry spell in our garden so wilted away. Although it was lovely to take seaside strolls and actually have a summer that felt like a holiday,…

Curtain Care Tips for Long-Lasting Elegance
Investing in quality curtains is just the first step — proper care and maintenance are essential to keep them looking their best for years to come. Regular cleaning and upkeep can help preserve the fabric’s color, texture, and overall elegance, ensuring that your curtains remain a stylish focal point in your home.
Start by checking the care instructions provided by the manufacturer. Some curtains may be machine washable, while others only require dry or spot cleaning. Be sure to follow these guidelines closely to avoid damaging the fabric. Hand washing or professional cleaning is often recommended for delicate materials like silk or linen to prevent shrinkage or distortion.
When it comes to everyday care, dusting or vacuuming your curtains regularly can help prevent the buildup of dirt and debris. Use a soft brush attachment or a lint roller to gently remove any dust or pet hair, paying special attention to pleats and folds where dirt tends to accumulate. If your curtains are machine washable, be sure to remove any hooks or hardware before laundering to prevent damage.
Finally, avoid exposing your curtains to direct sunlight for extended periods, as this can cause fading and deterioration over time. Consider using sheer or lightweight curtains as a protective layer or investing in UV-blocking window film to shield your curtains from harmful rays. With proper care and attention, your curtains can continue to adorn your home with elegance and style for years to come.

News is running a bit on how to make your house warmer in winter here, and starts with a bloke inspecting a house and it literally goes, "this house has no insulin in the walls, floor, and the ceiling insulation is full of gaps. The windows are single glazed and have poor coverings. There are nearly inch wide gaps at the base of every door including the external ones. Is very breezy inside."
Like. I know that's normal here, I live here, but sweet jesus.
News ended up advising that people put blinds in and get solar power. How tf are poor people gonna do that? Renters? Stupid advice. It's getting below zero at night rn and barely scratching 10°C in the day, which means it's the same damn temp indoors
I've improved my home by putting furniture against external walls as insulation. I've got fleece safety pinned to the inside of my curtains ($10 for a half sheet of fleece at spotlight rn!). I've taped the balcony door shut. I've committed to only heating two rooms and I've door snaked the doors to the rest of the house to save money. Do this even if you dont have a heater, your body heat is doing something. I chose bedroom and living room, some people might include kitchen to use heat from the oven but my house doesn't lay out for that to work.
Also, wear lots of clothes and blankets. It's 1pm, I have three shirts, a jumper, and three blankets on rn. Drink tea to keep hands warm. Try cleaning something with hot water instead of turning the heater on in the day, helps get your fingers warm and is slightly active. It's okay to sleep in gloves and a beenie. A hot shower to get your temp back up is good if you prep clothes and don't wet your hair.
If the world were better these houses would have been built well, but that's not where we are. There are tricks to use, use them

Thinking about the concept of cloth or soft things in general being considered luxury to cybertronians, and just imagining one using their holoform to enter a bedroom for the first time. There a big soft berth that sinks under their weight, an entire pile of warm insulating plush fabric, and even more small soft pads that they put their heads on! Could you imagine their reaction to a carpeted room? They even put soft things on the ground they walk on! It would be like looking at one of ridiculously luxurious mansions that are so loaded up with fancy things that it almost looks like a parody
This conjured up a little idea in me with ROTB Mirage, enjoy!
"Watch your shoulders on the-!"
CRUNCH
"...Door frame." So much for getting your deposit back. Mirage shot you a crooked grin, brushing some of the sheet-rock dust off of his shoulder pauldron.
"Sorry 'bout that, sweetspark. No big deal, you can patch that up no problem!"
When Noah had told you that Mirage was able to change his size you had only partially believed him. After all, according to his own stories, the Mirage that was barely larger than Noah in Peru had also had several significant pieces blasted off of his gargantuan frame. And yet, here he was. Fully repaired, mass-shifted to a mere seven-and-a-half feet tall. And sure, he still had to stoop to avoid taking out your ceiling fan. But here he was, in your meager apartment.
It was an equally unfamiliar locale for Mirage himself, having only caught peeks of your living quarters from the alleyway outside. The shag carpet was plush under his pedes, ridiculously soft to the touch. And sure, he'd owned a few of his own garments back in the Towers, in pre-war time, but it still paled in comparison to your room with its thick curtains, fluffy carpeting, and the dozen or so plush organic creatures littering your bed.
"Do you wanna listen to something? You can sit on the bed, if you want. You're probably too big for my desk chair." You were already rifling through your tapes, gesturing to the bed with your free hand and currently oblivious to Mirage's wide-optic stare. He took a careful seat on the edge and Primus, the entire mattress sunk and molded around his bulky frame. It was heavenly. He took one of your stuffed animals between his servos and squeezed, marveling at the squish.
"Man, I can't believe y'all live like this!" He laughed, draping himself backwards onto your bed with a warning creak. "It's comfy, that's for sure. But I don't think I could sleep on somethin' like this. It might swallow me up mid-recharge. And what's with all these little soft organics?"
"Says the guy who sleeps on the floor of a garage. I'd have aches in muscles I didn't even know existed." You pressed Talking Heads 'Speaking In Tongues' into the player with a familiar click, the beginning lick of Burning Down The House echoing through the tinny speaker as you flopped down next to Mirage. "And you're strangling Hello Kitty. They're cute, and soft, and that's kind of all there is to it? Kids like to play with them, too."
"Huh! Cute. Seems like your style. The whole hab seems like your style, actually. All soft and shit. " He handed you back your slightly-dented Hello Kitty, letting out a lazy ex-vent as his arm wrapped around your shoulders. "Well what should we do now?~ You got me all the way up into your berth, aren't you gonna do somethin' about it?"
You barked out a laugh, turning your head to see Mirage's playfully smarmy grin aimed down at you. "Was that your ploy? Show off your cool alien shape-shifting just so you could get in my bed?"
"That depends. Is it working?~"
"Maybe.~"

October Trick or Treat #5: Ghost finds Jon
I feel like there's a part two to this, but it was already 2K and this was a natural stopping point... (Also, I know these are Halloween prompts, but a winter setting felt natural for Ghost!)
x~x~x
Daemon glanced back at the towering outline of the stone fortress that served as the Royce summer dwelling, located in the foothills of the Serpent’s Spine, west of Runestones. It was nearly obscured now, by heavy snow from a storm that had swiftly blown in over the mountains during their play.
Laughter rang from his sons at the bottom of the hill, both enjoying a game Jon had suggested that leveraged unused shields borrowed from the fortress, which they rode down the snow-covered slopes. The speed had been unnerving at first, but the snow at the bottom was soft and thick. Squinting through the heavy flakes, it appeared that Jon had been launched into it, face-first, to Rhaegar’s amusement. His son popped up, shaking himself like a dog to dislodge the snow from his head and shoulders.
It was a fifteen minute trek back to the fortress in ankle-deep snow, and Caraxes had been left to laze about in its yard with the hatchlings, who were less capable of handling the cold, for this excursion. If the storm worsened, he did not want them to lose their way. They were all dressed in warm furs, but with the wind now picking up, Daemon could feel the cold sinking deeper in.
He called for his sons, but the wind carried his voice in the opposite direction, and they were too embroiled in an impromptu shoving game to notice the waving of his arms, so he started down the hill. Rather than the ankle-high snow at the top, it grew deeper as he descended, which explained why his sons were buried half to their waist at the very bottom.
I should have called them back half an hour ago, he fretted. Both his sons seemed to carry a youthful energy that insulated them from the cold, but it would not last forever. He was less immune to its effects, finding himself shivering, face almost numb from the frigid wind.
His sons jumped out of the snow at his call once he had reached the bottom, their caps blanketed in snow. “We must head back,” he said.
Jon looked around and then upward, seeming to notice the storm at last, and the mirth in his eyes vanished, worry overtaking his expression. The wind did not carry only snow from the sky now, but from the hillside above them, creating something not unlike a wave, but of snow, blinding vision as it crested over them.
Rhaegar, taking his cue from his brother, had also sobered. Daemon took each by the hand for the trek back up the hill, which was far more punishing, especially once they finally reached the top, where the wind whipped about, unhindered. What had been ankle-deep snow up there had already gained an inch, and he could not see the fortress at all anymore through the curtains of snow around them. He could barely see past his own outstretched arms.
Unease turned to sour fear. Daemon turned in place, trying to orient himself, but with the white blanketing every direction, there were no features he could use. There is no telling how long this storm will last.
A tug came at his sleeve. “It is that way,” Rhaegar said, voice forced to nearly a shout to be heard above the wind, pointing with his other arm. At Daemon’s hesitation, he added, “That is where I sense Qelebrys.”
His sons’ bonds with their hatchlings were strong enough that he believed him, and Daemon nodded at him to lead. It was slow-going with the wind and snow buffeting them, and despite his son’s sense of direction, it did not help in navigating the uneven terrain. The drifting snow filled dips in the terrain, and one such dip caused Rhaegar to nearly disappear entirely as a patch of lightly-packed snow above a void gave way beneath him, tearing his hand from Daemon’s grasp.
Daemon thrust out an arm, barring Jon from moving forward, heart in his throat as he dug at the loose snow. He found Rhaegar’s arm and heaved him out of the snow, the force of the tug sending him onto his back, his younger son landing on his chest. Both snow and furs cushioned the fall, but Daemon could feel the cold sinking deeper as wind battered them.
The walk from the holdfast to the angled slopes Jon had spotted from their morning ride on Caraxes for sledding down had seemed long to Daemon even in clear weather. He feared how long it would take on the way back. Even with Rhaegar providing a direction, the lack of visibility required moving slowly, lest they take a wrong step.
Even with their caution, it was Jon who took a tumble mere minutes later, foot sinking into another hidden void that sent him tumbling into a patch of snow-covered brush that swallowed him. Daemon shouted after him, unable to see even the top of his head. He went to his knees, skirting the edge as carefully as he could, and began digging.
A shape moved at the edge of his vision, and as he turned to order Rhaegar back, lest he too fall in, he found himself looking up into a pair of red eyes, set in a canine face that was perhaps twice the size of his own. The beast’s body was difficult to see against the snow, but from its outline, Daemon knew it to be no ordinary wolf. Blood pounded in his ears as he stared back, conscious of just how vulnerable the three of them were for a beast hungry for a meal.
I have no blade. He had left Dark Sister at the holdfast, and was armed with only a dagger. The terror that filled him was useless, so he let it turn to battle fury. He jerked the dagger free of its snow-clogged sheath, roaring at the creature as he prepared to strike, only to find his arm jerked downward.
“No!” Rhaegar shouted, arms wrapped tight around his and hanging onto it with all his weight. “That is Ghost! He is trying to help.”
Daemon struggled briefly, then halted, lest the dagger cut his other son. “Rhaegar—”
“He is helping, look!”
The beast had taken its red eyes off Daemon and was now digging at the patch that Jon had disappeared into, sending snow flying backward. Jon was helpless within. It could claw him, bite him, snap his neck—
Daemon wrapped his free arm around Rhaegar’s chest, his son struggling and kicking, shouting protests as Daemon broke his grip at last and freed his dagger hand. He turned back to the distracted beast, cold utterly forgotten, trying to assess where to strike to inflict as near-lethal damage as possible. He doubted he would get a second strike.
Its head disappeared into the snow briefly, and as Daemon coiled to stab into its ribs, ignoring Rhaegar’s screams, the beast scrambled back, jaws locked onto a dark shape that it pulled from the snow. Jon.
He was not aware of screaming his son’s name aloud. Daemon charged, a terrified rage fueling him as he aimed the dagger at its flank. Its hindquarters kicked in response, catching him right in his midsection, and Daemon went flying backward, breath hissing out on impact with the snow.
He fought to his feet, every limb shaking, the cold that found him now freezing him from within, a hundred visions swirling in his mind of what he would find. His son, lifeless, mangled, the snow turning crimson beneath him. A high-pitched shout found his ears through the roaring of the wind and his heartbeat, and Daemon raced to close once more—
Only to find his son with both arms hugged around the creature’s neck, face buried into the fur. Rhaegar was beside him, staring at the beast with wonder rather than fear. It had not yet moved to strike either, and Daemon swallowed the heart in his throat, approaching more slowly this time, ready to pull them from it so that he would have a clear angle.
Rhaegar turned back to Daemon and put himself between him and the beast. “Don’t! We know him, he would never hurt Jon.”
Daemon slowed, looking past him to see the beast licking Jon’s face as his son sobbed into his fur, body shaking. He lowered the dagger, watching its behavior carefully but finding no aggression. Its eyes locked on Daemon, and it lowered itself onto the ground, lying down, as though to communicate to him that it meant no harm.
“You know this beast?” Daemon asked, feeling as though he had somehow stepped into a dream.
“Ghost,” Rhaegar said. “Jon—we thought he had died. But he’s…protected us, before.”
Daemon continued to study the beast for a few moments longer. It could not be a wolf, not at that size. Could it be one of the fabled direwolves of House Stark? What in the hells would it be doing here in the Vale, following his children?
He sheathed his knife finally. With the fight gone from him, the cold had swept back in, and he could see Rhaegar’s teeth chattering with it, explaining the tremor to his voice as he had spoken. The storm had reclaimed its position as the gravest threat. They had gone no more than a quarter of the way, to Daemon’s best estimation.
A muffled roar sounded through the air then, above, and Daemon became aware at last of the swell of Caraxes’s battle-fury through their bond. The white of the snow swirling around them turned blindingly bright, and a faint warmth found his cheeks through the wind. The direwolf had sat back up, turning to the noise with caution, Jon still clinging to his fur.
Another flash lit the snow, followed by a loud, shaking thud just ahead. “Come,” Daemon said, relief leaving him weak. Even if Caraxes could not fly them back to the holdfast, he would provide all the warmth they needed.
Jon had looked up from the direwolf finally, and the creature gave his son a look. “Rhaegar,” Jon called.
Rhaegar went to his brother’s side, and Daemon watched in disbelief as Jon climbed onto the direwolf’s back, then nodded at Rhaegar to do the same. The direwolf rose to its feet, then fixed Daemon with a look that he could only describe as impatient.
Daemon stepped past him, following his sense of Caraxes, and the direwolf trotted after him, carrying his sons. After not even half a minute’s a trek, a large red shape became visible through the snow. A few steps later, the snow ended entirely, a thin border of slush giving way to dry, fire-baked mud and blackened vegetation.
Daemon stumbled to Caraxes’s side, placing his freezing hands against his scaled side, and closed his eyes, overwhelmed by relief. The wind whipped snow over along the dragon’s back, but they were sheltered from beside him, the ground itself radiating heat from what had likely been several passes of dragonflame.
It was the direwolf’s turn to be wary, but he still approached, lying down once more near Daemon’s feet to deposit his passengers. Daemon led them both closer to Caraxes’s head, halting beneath the shelter of his wings. His dragon craned his long neck to rest his face near them, breathing another gout of flame to warm the air and ground near them. The direwolf joined them after a moment, lying down on the warm ground beside his sons.
“We shall shelter here,” Daemon said. “And wait out the storm.”
That would leave plenty of time for answers.

˙ . ˚ ₊ 「 HOW TO FIND OUT IF YOUR ROOMMATE IS A VAMPIRE 」 ꜝꜝ
── your new roommate has been acting weird, and you've taken it upon yourself to get to the bottom of it
𝄞⨾𓍢ִ໋ 。。。
pairings 。best friend!yeonjun x reader x friend!soobin
.ᐟ genre 。suggestive at most? crack & fluff
.ᐟ tags 。vampire au, blood sucking?? feeding?? idk, they're both kind of dumb but not really just kind of, erm nothing else i think
.ᐟ status 。oneshot | masterlist
✎ ๋࣭ ⭑ kind of corny and cheesy but idgaf it’s my blog!!! i totally forgot about this but it was at a point where i said yeah sure what the hell and decided to post it. another roommate hyuka au bc my schedules never go as planned so i just cut it short...i'll post an nsfw addition if people want it though
You tap your pen against the counter as you watch your roommate do his “work,” typing away at his remote job on his laptop. You narrow your eyes at him with a pout, drumming the writing material faster on the surface. Kai sighs and looks up at you, mirroring your investigative expression. “Are you alright?”
You narrow your eyes further, nodding slowly. “Yeah, just finishing the points for my project.” He turns back to the screen, humming absentmindedly. “What’s it about?” You freeze, stuttering over yourself. “It’s—uh, about…Global warming.” He doesn’t seem convinced, raising an arched brow at you, but he lets it pass anyway. “Well, good luck on that.”
It’s been a few months since the boy had moved in with you, and fewer when you began to realize his strange patterns.
You look down at your notes—and in bold, underlined writing are the words “HUENING KAI IS A VAMPIRE (proof).” If anyone were to ever see this pad, they’d call you comically insane. However as previously mentioned, you have proof. First, he never goes out during the day. Granted, he has a job and takes night classes—but other than that, he’s never gone on a grocery run with you or exited his room on the weekends unless the sun sets. Second, he always drinks from an insulated tumbler. It even stays by his side at the dinner table, opting for it rather than the rest of the glasses. Third, he never cooks with garlic. He’s pretty much the cook out of the two of you, recalling the incident of you somehow setting fire on the stove. Who cooks without garlic? A vampire, that’s who. Third, he always disappears at dawn. You’re not insane enough (yet) to follow him, especially when you can barely keep your eyes open after midnight. Sometimes you hear the front door and peek at his silhouette, a large duffel bag in his grasp—but your conscience (your laziness) forbids you from leaving the place unattended for the sole purpose of following him. Lastly, he’s unbelievably pretty. This point has a really large question mark on it in red ink, but you’ve never seen someone look so angelic, as if he would glimmer in the sunlight. Not that you would know, he mostly wears baggy clothes that are long in sleeves and pants. Like what? A vampire!
What would you even get out of this? He would’ve sucked your blood to death by now—but maybe splitting rent was just easier for him. If he was a vampire and he had no intention to murder you in cold blood, then you suppose you would let him stay.
What? He’s a great roommate, great cook, tidy, and fun to be around. Every time you think about it, it comes to a point where you realize he would make a great significant other. But that’s ridiculous, he's a vampire after all, so you conclude that you were just curious about him and his weird habits.
──
For step one, you decide to check for his reflection. Throughout your five second internet search along with your film viewing, you know for a fact that vampires do not have reflections. “Kai! Grab me a towel please!” You plead, voice shrill and loud as you patiently wait in the shower. Truthfully, you forgot your towel. But why not take this opportunity to test your hypothesis? Kai fumbles with the door knob as you peek through the corner of the curtain. “A-are you naked? My eyes are closed!” You turn to the mirror, fogged up by the steam. You tut in disapproval, wiping it away to reveal Kai’s apprehensive form. You pout, snatching the towel from him and wrapping it around yourself. “You can look now.” He peeks through his fingers and gasps at your still half-naked self as you sulk out of the bathroom.
Admittedly, you almost quit after that encounter altogether. But one evening, Kai worked an odd shift, rendering him unable to cook dinner and leaving the meal up to you. He walks out of his room to a suspiciously clean and hazard free area, with food set on the table. “This looks… Edible.” He says shocked, earning an eye roll from you. “Do you not trust me to make dinner?” The other looks down, scratching his head. “Well, the last time you cooked I had to replace my nonstick pan. That thing’s been with me since elementary.” You huff, taking your seat across from him. “Whatever. I ordered it and put it on one of our plates. Happy?” He sits down as well, taking a serving for himself. “I'd be happier if you learned how to cook without burning the apartment down. It’s a very important life skill, you know.” You make a sound of annoyance, picking at your food. “I do other things—like cleaning. Besides, if I had skill, we wouldn’t be having garlic soy chicken.” The other freezes for a while and slowly looks up at you from his plate. “Does this have garlic?” You nod, pointing at the box over by the trash can. “Yup, it’s their most popular flavor. Honestly I like their other ones better—”
Kai spits the foot out and wraps his hands around his neck, dropping to the ground. “Holy shit!” You chant over and over, flailing around in circles as he lays on the floor. “In my room—desk drawer!” He hisses, and you frantically run across the place. You aren't even sure what you’re getting, but once you see a stack of epinephrine injections, you grab one and stab him with it.
You kind of feel guilty for a moment, because you thought he was actually a vampire who couldn’t eat garlic. Turns out he just had an allergic reaction to garlic, which was rare but apparently not impossible.
──
The following morning, you meekly knock at the door to his room. Today is his free day, and you wanted to make it up to him. You bring him flowers and a new EpiPen injection, smiling at him when he opens the door. “Im sorry for poisoning you yesterday.” And for trying to prove you were a bloodsucking supernatural immortal. “We can go out today if you want? My treat.” His smile forms the shape of a box with his eyebrows upturned, and you know he’s about to reject you. “That’s fine, but I’m really not in the mood for—” — “Come on, Kai! We can do anything you want, please?” You plead, leaning over and pouting at him. He sighs in defeat, straightening his posture once he realizes your words. “Anything?” You nod fervently. “Anything.”
“Then,” he starts, fidgeting with the ends of his hoodie, “it’s a date.” You blink up at him, thinking for a moment. Oh like a friendly date, bonding together! You nod again, grin wide and bright. “Okay!”
It was after the park walk and arcade that you realized it may be more than a friendly date. You’re shifting uncomfortably in your seat, watching Kai order something in French you won’t even try to pronounce. “Kai, I don’t think I can afford any of these.” You whisper, to which he shakes his head. “It’s alright, I got it. You must be sick of my home cooking by now.” — “That’s not true!” You exclaim rather loudly, “I love your cooking.” He giggles at you, and you’re not sure if it’s the warm lighting against the other’s complexion or seeing him in something other than sweats that makes you anxious all of a sudden. “I’ll pay you for this, I swear.” Kai pushes his hair back and rests his face in his palm. “You can pay me back with another date.” Another date?!
Your thoughts are cut by the smell of the food set in front of you, and you spare no time in stuffing as much as you can into your mouth as the other watches you in endearment.
──
When you get home, he stops at the front door and stops you from pulling out your keys. You raise an eyebrow in question, while he laughs awkwardly to himself. “Today was really fun. I’m almost entirely glad that you decided to almost kill me yesterday.” You grin sheepishly at his words, “Again, I’m so sorry.” You’re about to continue rambling, but the other is staring at you so intensely you quiet down. “...What is it?”
“Can I kiss you?”
It’s embarrassing how quickly you answer yes, and you cup your cheeks in your palms in an attempt to hide the blush forming underneath—but it’s no use. He grabs the end of your fingers and replaces your hands with his, inching his face closer to yours. His lips move slow and calculated, rhythm steady as you let him work his way through your mouth. Just as you reciprocate his movements, your tongue is nicked by something sharp, making you jolt upright. But Kai doesn’t let you go, instead he crashes himself deeper into you, sucking at the surface of your tongue and separating with a resounding pop. The both of you take heavy breaths for a while, your hair disheveled and his bottom lip coated in crimson sheen. “I knew it!” You exclaim, before shrinking within yourself. “You’re—uh, you’re a…” You trail off, body pressed against the wooden panel. “I’m a vampire.” He breathes out, “Wait, you knew?”
You’re trembling, panic-stricken as you nudge the doorknob over and over. “That’s not gonna turn without the key.” He mumbles, and you point your key at him in an ill attempt at self-defense. “Are you gonna eat me?!”
“Eat—what? No.” He says, using his own key to unlock the place. You squeak as he maneuvers you into the apartment, and he settles you down on the couch across from him. “But how?” You start, “I can see your reflection?” — “Uh, yeah? I’m a vampire, not a figment of your imagination.” You deflate at his words, leaning forward. “But all the novels say—” He cuts you off with laughter. “All the novels? Do you read supernatural romance?” Defensive, you raise your arms. “It’s more drama than romance! They say vampires can’t see their reflection because they have no souls.” The other raises a brow, “Ouch. What does that even mean?” You shrug, completely lost.
“So what’s true? About like, myths about you?” Pursing his lips in thought, Kai settles against the cushions. “The mirror thing is just stupid. I guess the garlic thing is true.” You blink, dumbfounded. “That’s real?” The other nods. “If convulsing on the floor was any indicator, then yeah.” You furrow your brows, “What kind of old vampire ailment gets cured via EpiPen?” — “I mean—it kind of works like an allergy anyway. Contact dermatitis and whatnot.” You scoff. “And whatnot,” you mock, “what about going out at night and wearing baggy clothes outside? What about sneaking off at dawn?” Tilting his head, he replies calmly. “I told you, I have work during the day and I work out at night—what are you doing?” You reach for the notepad stored in one of the drawers, twirling your pen as you go through every item on your list. “What about the tumbler?” Narrowing his eyes, he asks, “The tumbler?”
“What’s in your tumbler? You have it with you at all times, hell you even took it out today! Is it blood?” You ask as if it were scandalous, voice low and in a whisper. “It’s really just water.” He replies, “I feed through a network of fully consenting humans.”
You put the pad down, crossing your arms at him with a glare. “You’ve never asked me to help you. Is my blood not good enough for your bourgeois taste buds?” Confusion paints his face, quick to dispute your statement. “No, and believe me, your blood has been really tempting. It’s just that, well, I like you—and I thought maybe you would hate me or something.”
“Oh.” Your palms turn clammy as you shut them on each other, thinking of more questions. “So how long were you—like were you always a vampire?” He shakes his head in disagreement, answering, “I turned a few years back actually.” You gaze at him empathetically. “I’m sorry.” He laughs, indifferent. “Sorry for what?” You return the laugh nervously, “I… Don’t know.” A few beats of silence pass before you speak up again. “Well! At least now your skin is glowing and—” “Oh that’s not a myth…” He admits, “I’ve always looked like this.” Clearing your throat, you reply: “Well, you’re very pretty.” This coaxes a genuine smile from him. “Thanks, you’re very pretty too.” The both of you stay completely still again, though this time Kai breaks the silence. “Was all this an attempt to find out if I was a vampire?” You chuckle lightly, half humiliated. “No… I kind of gave up when I saw your reflection. I promise I didn’t mean to give you an allergic reaction.” He disregards your apologies lightly with a raised hand, still in thought. “About the date…” You’re quick to explain, “Honestly I didn’t think it was going to be a date date.” His frown and the dent between his brows deepen. “So you don’t like me?” Picking at the fabric of the couch, you stammer through your words.“I don’t—not like you? I just haven’t thought about you like that until recently, I guess.”
“So what do you think now?” You gaze up to see him staring at you, an unreadable expression on his face. “As long as you don’t kill me I’m fine—I think.” He follows up immediately, “Does that mean you’ll feed me? I’ll just take a little, I swear.” You wince at his eagerness, rubbing the skin of your nape. “Does it hurt?” Kai draws back at your reluctance, feigning nonchalance with a dismissive wave of hand. “A bit, yeah. But! I heard it makes some people feel good.” — “Good how?” The other shrugs, lips forming into a line. “Not sure.” Your curiosity has always led you to uncomfortable positions, this being the most life threatening one so far. Honestly, you should just drop this whole thing altogether.
“You’ll stop when I tell you to, right?” His face lights up again, jumping over to your side of the sofa. “Of course.”
Hesitant, you move away the hair behind your neck and Kai takes it as a sign to move even closer. He grabs your waist and hoists you up to straddle him, cheeks flushed when he looks into your eyes and realizes he’s gotten ahead of himself. After you reassure him with a peck on the lips, he dips his head over to the junction between your shoulder and face, looking up at you for a signal. Milliseconds after you nod, he sinks his teeth in slowly, rupturing the barrier of flesh. He halts for a minute before taking, as if the slightest movement would set you off. He can feel a squeak vibrate through your throat and your thighs tense against his hips, slightly trembling.
True to his word, he lets you go once he feels your grip tighten at his arms. He licks over the wound he created and kisses it, meeting your eyes again. You’re stunned in place, the only movement coming from rapid blinking and taking in breaths.
“Woah.”
He cups the sides of your face, searching your expression for discontent. “Woah? Woah bad or woah good?” You lean your head back and stare into the ceiling, lightly gripping the collar of his shirt. “As in I feel lightheaded—and weird. Feels super weird. Like I’m tipsy.” Gasping, the other fidgets in place, your weight keeping him down. “Oh no.” He starts to panic, but you shut it down by smiling at him, albeit loopy. “Don’t worry, I’m fine—great even.” You assure him, covering his face in short kisses before resting your cheek against his chest. Sighing in relief, Kai plays with the top of your head for a moment, before you grab both his wrists and look at him with sparkles in your eyes. “Can we do that again?”
