What is up with kina in splatoon?

Now I'm no kina expert on kina, so maybe real life kina are super varied. But if not, Isn't it weird how different the splatoon kina look? How come all the jellyfish look the same but KINA of all species look so diverse? Like it's confusing how different they are.

The most obvious thing is the spikes.

So we've got Murch, whose spikes seem to be directly attached to his head like hair.

But then we have Spyke, whose spikes are like a shell

And then we have Murasaki and Kitamura, who just look like kina with googly eyes

They are only seen as album art so this could just be a stylistic way of representing kina like Spyke

But then there's Oonie

And her hair is a shell??

And their EYES. Spyke could hypothetically have two, but it's implied he has one.

Murch DEFINITELY had one

All the kina in the band have two

AND the eye colours are different

Spyke has purple sclera and green eyes, while murch has the inverse

Murasaki and Kitamura have white eyes, although this could just be a stylistic choice

Most interesting are Oonie's eyes, which are pink with white sclera.

And then there's the height.

We know inklings and octolings don't grow freakishly taller than the player character when they grow up, so we can use the height of inklings as reference for kina on album art.

We know that young kina are short because of Murch, and we know that they grow to be much, much taller than inklings and octolings. This would imply that Oonie, Kitamura, and Murasaki are young because they are the same size or shorter than the inklings in their bands. I personally doubt they are meant to be that young, however with Paul being as young as he is it wouldn't be unheard of.

Another trait that kina have are hands. However, Oonie doesn't seem to have hands in the album art. This isn't a stylistic choice either, because you can see the inklings have hands. Oonie is also clearly older than Murch in splatoon 2 and even in splatoon 2 Murch clearly has hands, so it doesn't make sense that Oonie wouldn't. It's made even more clear in this piece of official art:

Oonie doesn't have hands, she has tendrils. And if you look at Kitamura, she also has tendrils! What look like tendrils!

Also, it's less likely that Kitamura and Murasaki are portrayed as kina with googly eyes as merely a stylistic choice because making a stylistic choice like that in a piece like this would be a stretch in my opinion. However it's not impossible.

These are the things that I've noticed about splatoon kina, feel free to add on to this or give possible explanations for the vast differences.

Oonie/Aachin played double/upright bass at first but switched to electric after seeing Ikkan perform with SqSq

Was once asked by Nishida to be his pretend girlfriend for a family event. Since they had set no ending time for the role, they are technical still 'dating'

Knows how to pick locks

Karen:

Karen, and Taka of High Tide Era,run a podcast about what it was like as a music major,mostly they gossip and talk about other bands and musicians and music theory. It's popular with up and coming musicians. their podcast is probably called something along the lines of "tenure plan" (a play on the phrase 'ten year plan') or something like that

Speaks five languages including regional dialects, she is currently learning the salmonid language in her spare time

Gnarly Eddie's older sister/ cool older cousin

Yoko:

Yoko and Bibi/Zuzu are childhood besties and practically know everything about each other,they are at the damn near telepathic level of friendship

She gives off like cool skate park lesbian vibes

also plays a bit of saxophone because she thought it would impress cute girls

Bibi/Zuzu:

Bibi/Zuzu is capable of playing other instruments, most notably the flute, penny whistle,and harmonica.

Huuuge lowkey jokester,but only around her close friends and family

Kazoo is her preference because she lowkey thinks it's hilarious and wants/loves to make people smile

Kitamura:

Kitamura can see ghosts. It's an inherited trait she shares with her grandmother.

Her most prized possession is a squid squad album signed solely by Murasaki (her long time crush).

Hi there!!

I have recently started reading the splatoon manga and it mentions one of the characters "looking like he can surf" might be a translation thing but one of his teammates has scuba diving gear which is also a piece of headgear present in the games, as well as diving fins.

What's your take on that? It seems paradoxical that inkfish have sea sports even if they can't go in water.

my first take is that the splatoon manga isnt canon to the games. but setting that aside yes there is gear in the game that looks like swimwear, and more relevant, we have this from the art of splatoon 2:

an inkling that professionally surfs. I'll be real. as someone who is deeply invested in lore about the relationship between inkfish and water. this had been haunting me for a while. The way i had been justifying this in my head is that we know that inklings can wash their hands (JP piranha pit dialogue) and take foot baths in water (JP skipper pavilion dialogue), and they can respawn if they fall in...but then what about the board... and all the contact with water...seems. yes. paradoxical. anyway i just had the thought of.... what does the japanese version say...?

ink surfing implies ink wave pools! probably ink swimming pools too! so ignore all i said about trying to justify the surfing in water thing bc there is no need to.

And when it comes to where they would get that quantity of ink, the octarians have that figured out at the least

Id imagine the inklings would have also figured out ways to make massive amounts of ink for recreational use without needing a bunch of people to spit in a pool. the technology is out there. so the answer to "why do they have stuff for sea sports if they cant swim in water?" -fashion -they have ink versions of those sea sports
