Pairing: Preston Garvey/ Female Sole Survivor

Summary: In the aftermath of personal tragedies, Preston and Charlie both seek to make a difference in the Commonwealth and those around them. They could never anticipate the impact that they will have on eachother in the process.

Chapter Five: Coast’s Clear

Chapter Summary: Charlie doesn't know many things for certain since she woke up in the future, but one thing she does know is that she will never watch someone she loves die again. Not if there's something she can do about it.

Charlie hadn’t lived in Massachusetts for long when the bombs fell. She and Nate moved up from West Virginia in July of 2077, she’d gotten a position as a postdoctoral fellow in neuropsychology at Medford Memorial Hospital, more than a little excited to make use of her shiny new degree. Shaun was born two months later. After spending most of her life moving from place to place for her education, she was ready to settle down. She never made it that far.

Needless to say, she’d also never made it down to Quincy. Though, at the moment, she desperately wished she had.

Preston had this way of looking at her sometimes when he thought she didn’t notice, a lingering glance over his shoulder, a careful observation of her face as if he expected to find some twinkle of pre-war nostalgia in her eyes when entering a new area, memories from a time when the air didn’t reek of sulfur and rotting flesh, and no one had to worry whether or not they’d be run out of their homes and mowed down by mercenary cults. She could offer him no solace. She could barely even look him in the eyes.

In more comfortable times over the past eight months since they had met, he simply asked her if she was familiar with locations or landmarks. Once, he asked her if she had fought in the Battle of Bunker Hill, and she informed him that she was two hundred and thirty-seven years old, not well over five hundred. His smile had wrinkled up his eyes that day as he laughed away the embarrassment. Today, there were no stories to be told, no jokes or laughter, just Preston, Charlie, Amelia, a handful of other Minutemen and a large pile of ashes that used to have names.

“I don’t like this,” Charlie muttered, more to herself than anything.

She jumped when Preston replied, “Me neither. Not one bit.”

She hadn’t expected him to hear her, or even pay attention. She could barely see his eyes from under the shadow cast by his hat, but she didn’t need to see to know that he wasn’t okay. He wasn’t one to wear the overwhelming grief he experienced on his face, anyway. The last time they’d visited a Minutemen graveyard, as the Lexington Super Duper Mart had turned out to be, he had to excuse himself from a barricaded room filled with deceased members of the militia. She found him in the feral-corpse littered hallway, green around the gills and sweating. He didn’t have a weak stomach, but reminders of his loss seemed to impact him viscerally. She wondered how he managed to keep his composure now, standing in the place where it all started.

She was drawn from her thoughts by a thunderous boom that left her ears ringing. She hated that noise. Looking up towards the direction of the blast she saw a small, mushroom-cloud pouring up from a nearby building. A fucking nuke. Hadn’t people learned a damn thing?

Charlie scanned the area for someone holding a Fat Man. She’d been toe-to-toe with wielders of those atrocities enough times to know that she had to act, and fast. Movement on the roof of the nearby church. Just right if the belfry stood a large figure, someone in power armor, with the exact weapon. Without another thought, she charged in his direction. If she got close enough in range she could keep him from firing again. He wouldn’t get another shot. Not if she had anything to do with it.

She tangled with very few Gunners on her way to the church, thankfully. Most of them were distracted by the small militia that accompanied her. A couple of grunts took shots at her once she made it inside, but they missed and she fired back, hitting each of them once. She didn’t stop to make sure they were incapacitated. There wasn’t time. She needed to get to the roof.

The stairs that led to the belfry were worn and rickety. In less of a panic, she probably would have made her way up them gingerly, avoiding the obvious areas of dry rot. Still, she managed to make it to the top without event. She hoped the luck would stay on her side just a little bit longer. She just needed to take out the Gunner with the Fat Man, or at least distract them long enough to protect the Minutemen. Her Minutemen.

“Hey,” Charlie shouted, pointing both of her pistols at the man loading a mini nuke into his gun, “Asshole!”

“What the--” he looked up from what he was doing just in time for her ballistic round to strike him between the eyes.

“Yes,” she said under her breath. How had she gotten to the point where she felt relief at another person’s death? Is this what the Commonwealth made of all its inhabitants?

She moved in closer to examine the man’s corpse, still standing erect in the power armor shell. A whole lot of good that did him. He was a relatively young man, mid-thirties, and she wondered if he had a family. MacCready had been a Gunner once, he’d told her as they sat drinking whiskey in The Third Rail, bloodstained and bathed in red neon light. It was a gig, a way of making money to support his young son when he had no better options. What if this man had been just like him? Charlie didn’t want to think about it.

Noting a fully loaded, modified laser pistol on the ground near the dead Gunner, she picked it up, discarding both of the 10mms in her hands. They’d just been spares, and she was out of ammo anyway. She also looted a stimpak and a good chunk of caps before standing up and adjusting her belt. A loud crash of metal and puffing of hydraulics rose up from the street beneath her and she rushed to the edge of the roof, crouching to keep out of view.

Preston. A more practical person would have noticed the handlebar mustache wearing the T60 first, the actual source of the commotion, but then again she never claimed to be practical. Why was he alone? Why hadn’t he fallen back to the gates with everyone else, where it was safe? She’d run at a man shooting nukes to protect him and there he was out in the wide open, staring down who could only be the notorious traitor Clint, if the militia hat and sheer aura of son-of-a-bitch were any indication. It was out of character for Preston to be so reckless. Maybe he’d forgotten that was her job.

The two men spoke, but she was too far away to make out any of the conversation. She’d never seen Preston look so visibly angry or shaken. She needed to get to him before something bad happened, but she needed to be careful. Frantically, she dug through her various pockets looking for one item in particular. Hoping, praying she still had it.

She smiled and let out a sigh of relief as she pulled the stealth boy from her satchel. That Railroad operative, Deacon, had given it to her as a welcome gift when she’d agreed to help him out. At the time, she’d shrugged it off as a passive aggressive commentary on her lack of discretion. She’d have to thank him next time they crossed paths.

Charlie rushed back inside the church tower, and down the rickety steps as quickly as she could, flipping open the cap of the stealth boy and pressing the button as she did so. By the time she reached the street, she was completely invisible. Later, when she and Preston were safe and sound back at Sanctuary, she’d ask Sturges how it worked.

As she crept her way up behind Clint, the man reared back and punched Preston so forcefully it sent him flying into an old junked out Corvega parked nearby. She brought her invisible hand to her invisible mouth to keep herself from gasping audibly. As far as she knew, stealth boys weren’t sound proof. She took some deep steadying breaths, ignoring the burn of tears in her eyes. Now wasn’t the time to lose her shit.

Moving into position directly behind Clint, she noticed Preston’s eyes on her. He must have noticed the movement in the air. She lowered the stealth field, watching relief wash over his face as she smiled and drew her finger to her lips. Clint would not take him away from her. She wasn’t in a cryochamber this time, and she would not stand helplessly by and watch someone she loved die. Never again.

“What’s so fucking funny,” she heard him ask Preston who was, despite it all, laughing.

“Nothing man,” Preston answered, slurring his words in a way that made Charlie uneasy, “Nothing at all.”

She took that opportunity to fire, aiming her fancy new pistol at the legs of Clint’s power armor. She had noticed that they were damaged as she moved in, knew it wouldn’t take much to disable them. Sure enough, after a half-dozen or so shots, the T60’s leg’s locked up, forcing the man to jump out. He turned in her direction as soon as he did so.

“You little bitch ,” he snapped, and christ, if Charlie didn’t hate being called a bitch.

He tried to raise his weapon and fire at her, but she’d already pulled the trigger, launching a blast of burning red energy into his chest, and filling her nostrils with the sterile scent of ozone. She holstered her weapon and hovered over him for a minute, shaking her head. “I’m not a bitch.”

Charlie then brought her eyes back up to Preston, where he sat leaned up against the car, worry tightening her chest. It wasn’t a good sign that he hadn’t even tried to stand up yet, so unlike him to not make an attempt to brush off his injuries and press forward. She ran over and knelt down in front of him, cupping his face in her hands and turning it to the left, then the right to check for any signs of external bleeding. When she saw nothing more than a couple of superficial scrapes she brought up her pip boy and flashed a bright beam of light into each of his eyes.

Shit , she thought, but hid her worry behind a laugh as he flinched and squirmed away from the light. Only one of his pupils had responded to the flash, which meant that he had a concussion at the very least. She refused to entertain the other possibilities at the moment. The tears she had held back just minutes earlier returned to her eyes, and she didn’t fight them this time.

“You’re okay,” she told him, kissing his forehead reflexively, “Looks like you might have a concussion, but you’re safe. I’m here.”

He blinked up at her a few times, and she wished she could live up to that version of her that reflected in his eyes. She wished desperately that she could be everything he needed her to be, but with Shaun, and the Institute, and--

“You’re really scary sometimes,” he interrupted her snowballing thoughts, a smirk twitching at the corners of his mouth, “You know that?”

She knew she shouldn’t take any of his concussed statements seriously, but an embarrassed laugh bubbled up from her chest, and she couldn’t hold his gaze. “I’m sorry, I just… I’d just watched Clint knock you into the car, and he was about to kill you, and I just…”

She trailed off, internally chastising herself for failing to conjure up a coherent response. She wasn’t even the one with the head injury. A gentle tap, and tug at her chin guided her eyes back to Preston. He let his hand linger where it was as his smirk turned into a full-on smile.

“No,” he said, laughing softly, and shaking his head, “It’s kinda hot.”

Heat rose to her face and she snorted gracelessly at his compliment. She didn’t know how or what to feel, couldn’t put her finger on why his affection made her so overwhelmingly sad. She shrugged it off and wiped a tear from her face. “Jesus, you hit your head harder than I thought.”

He didn’t respond, and his eyes fluttered closed instead, hand falling limply from her face. Panic surged up into her chest and she leaned forward to catch him from falling over on his side.

“Preston,” she called out frantically, as she repositioned herself so that she could ease his head down onto her lap, removing his hat and setting it on the ground by her hip. “Preston?”

Again, no response. “God damnit,” she snapped, slamming the side of her fist into the metal of the car door behind her, body finally giving into the sobs she’d been fighting, sobs that weren’t solely in response to present events. She doubled over, knuckles turning white around the fabric of his duster she clenched in her fists.

“I’m sorry, Preston,” she whimpered, knowing he couldn’t hear her, knowing it didn’t matter because she would continue to let him down. “I’m so sorry.”

Charlie stiffened at the sound of footsteps, straightening up to see Amelia, her long brown hair flying out of it’s braid, followed by the others who’d accompanied them. She found herself wishing MacCready was there, Codsworth, Sturges, anyone except the contingent of unfamiliar faces peering down at their commanding officer having a temper tantrum. Amelia glanced between Charlie and Preston, pretty blue eyes filled with concern.

“He’s okay,” Charlie explained, scrubbing tears away from her swollen face, “Just unconscious. He hit his head pretty bad.”

“What happened?”

“Clint-- at least I think that guy over there’s Clint-- hit Preston so hard he sent him flying into this,” Charlie pointed to the car behind her and watched as Amelia approached the body of the man Charlie’d just killed.

The woman frowned, shook her head, and kicked the corpse before returning to Charlie’s side. “That’s Clint alright, the bastard.” She offered Charlie a reassuring smile, and then glanced down at Preston, “You got a stimpak on you, General?”

Charlie recalled the one she picked up from the Gunner she’d taken out. She could have slapped herself for not thinking of it sooner. She reached into one of the pouches on her belt and pulled it out, showing it to the other woman.

“Perfect. Let’s give it to Preston, just in case he’s more banged up than he looks.” She took the syringe from Charlie’s shaking hand gently and removed the cap, and jammed it into Preston’s upper arm. He jerked slightly at the pain, but didn’t stir. Amelia continued speaking, “What do you say we have a couple of the boys move him someplace comfy? There are some abandoned apartments up the street.”

“Yes.” Charlie nodded. “What about the--”

“Coast’s clear. Any of the Gunners we didn’t kill ran off.” Amelia smiled. “Quincy’s ours again.”

The old “Stalking Order Trick”.

It never works.

It’s getting old though. This is the fourth time.

They do this when I report terrorism.

Instead of stopping the terrorism, instead of granting an interview to talk more about the terrorism, they send these two actors from Hollywood dressed in sheriff outfit, to hassle me, scare me, make me go into the controlled environment at the courthouse. Last time I was at the courthouse for this same terror scenario, Joe Satraini was portraying a Bailiff, attacked be with a sword in the courtroom, and was killed or injured in defense, then, I went home afterwords.

The reports of terrorism is answered with more terrorism, what you see there happened moments ago, the paper is still on the front porch, I did not open the door or invite the SAG terrorists into my home.

The one on the right looks remarkably similar to one of three men who claimed to be Secret Service, US Army, and FBI representatives who came to my home about this same time last year, I wrote about that, it’s on this account somewhere from the day it happened. I referred to them as “The Three Bozos” because they each had ID indicating that they indeed were from the agency’s mentioned, but were wearing casual street clothes. That one on the right looks like the “FBI” representative from that day, who was wearing a black leather or fake leather jacket that day. That one was dressed more “down town“ in the leather and slacks, while the other two Bozos were dressed for cutting some fire wood, in flannel and blue jeans.

That day one year ago, the NAMM Winter Music Industry Trade Show had just ended, or was under way, my assessment was that the three were musicians, disguised, came to kill me for my Medicare status to perpetuate my prescriptions with help from Paine Specialists of Southern Oregon in Medford.

So, that looks like the same guy there on the right, is dressed as Josephine County Sheriff Deputy today.

That other one on the left did all of the talking, said my neighbors went to the courthouse to file a ��stalking order”.

Co-incidentally, my swollen leg with internal burning sensation is so bad today and yesterday that I can barely walk, I cannot feel my right foot, it’s as if it’s not there, except that my right foot feels frozen, is very painful, but like a club on the end of my leg ... hurts bad, is frozen cold, and when I try to walk it’s as if I have no foot to stand on sort of feeling from the poison gasses that the people who filed the stalking order have been poisoning me with by blowing the gasses into my home through the weep holes in the windows and cracks around the doors, forced through the weatherstripping they ruined years ago, and the gas is also blown through the laundry dryer vent, and condensation vent for the heating unit. and down the chimney with a long extension tube made of fiberglass folding tent supports.

The coincidence is that I am having trouble wearing socks to warm my foot, the sock is hindering the circulation, makes it feel colder, so, I tried a different sock. I put on one black sock, and one white sock on the other foot while trying to find one that will help warm up my frozen painful foot, but nothing is working.

I put the black sock on, and just a short time after having one black & white sock on my feet, the black & white shows up, within about an hour or two. There must be a camera inside my house for that to have happened, or, someone saw through the window that much about what I am wearing on my feet.

That is how terror is done, they will say my foot hurts because it was cold out when I was stalking the terror army in the neighborhood.

It’s a symbolic snuff movie.

You need to watch the signer, there are two signer’s, one is the guy the signed the contract to kill me, and the other is the one who is using church gang signs to say there is a snuff movie online somewhere.

Savvy sleuths could find the web address where a series of live murders took place today, that’s my call on that Joe Biden terror snuff pay-per-view infomercial from the @POTUS Twitter account today.

Most likely at a “Voyeur” website where cameras are arranged in a house, and everyone thinks that the people who live there do that for free intentionally just for you to watch. Reality is that an advertisement from @POTUS can say when and where the web site for a live steaming snuff murder is to take place online. It all happens within a short time, the camera feed is changed from the actual location via blue tooth temporarily, and the snuff video feed is inserted into the Voyeur website, where no one is ever there anyway, is just a cat and dog running around in a recorded loop. Club members are invited to watch.

Hint: If the Twitter account says: “He/Him”; “She/Her”; “They/Them”; “We/Us” or one of a few other “Pronoun‘s” that are described better at Whitehouse.gov “Contact Us” web site, are all “Club Members” and know where and how the find access to the “Voyeur” URL’s. Don’t report terrorism to the White House, that is one of the most dangerous things a person could ever try to do.

The thing that makes all of that worse is that Joe Bides in only a place holder for Ann Wilson and Roger Waters, who are the people who are really running the activities of the White House and Congress, and it’s all done from a place called Kauai Ranch in the state of Hawaii.

There is no Joe Biden any more. The videos are all from his Vice Presidency time, edited by Hollywood movie professionals to fool you.

Below are some of the parts to the hit order commanded on Twitter yesterday to have those fake deputies come to do a snuff set-up. Maybe they were supposed to cart me over to Chartrand’s at 376, or to the usual torture center next to my house at 520 Jackpine. I may have fouled up that attempt when I showed that I had a camera.

There are still many other scenarios in place as mentioned in other entries on this account.

Yesterday, the Monroe terror cell saw that I was unable to walk to the mailbox because my leg is hurting so bad, that I was limping and the pain got worse as I walked towards the road, so I turned around and walked back home because of the affects of the constant poisoning the Monroe’s and others are subjecting me to. So, they saw I was injured, and am an easy to capture prey, and Twitter arranged the hit order as a result, having had Monroe’s confirmation that I am hurt bad, can‘t get to the mailbox, and am limping in pain.

This is not well known in circles outside of Hollywood DC terrorism, but I know what that spiral staircase is, that is a “Mitt Romney & The Mormons at Red Rocks”, is the same as “Allah & The Virgins at the Hollywood Bowl” terror comm. That puts Mitt Romney’s signature on the hit at my house.

There is more I need to find, I am having trouble finding Psaki’s Wardrobe change yesterday where she took off the dress with the hole in it, and put on a black & white dress with a Chevron Print Design feature on the bust of the dress. That is when the means to do the hit at my house was decided to me a “Black & White Sheriff ‘Shove Ron’ Build Back Heart Attack, Better American Rescue Plan” (Ron Howard’s Master Class Signature went on the hit order at that time.)

There were multiple tweets from a variety of major news networks, I think they have all been deleted because it’s too easy to see that it’s a “Shovron“, and Ron Howard does want to go to the gas chamber for Treason for having directed the World Trade Center Collapse in 2001, and, the others he was working with who directed and took part in the attack at the Pentagon that day, also don‘t want to face a firing squad in Texas for their participation in the treason, and Ron is going to sing like a little Twitter Bird, live, at 376 Jackpine on a voyeur channel, when the real police find him.

This is all because I asked the White House to send some help. I informed of the mass murders, again, to the White House ... I think I have made about ten or twelve official reports to the White House over the course of time since Gearge W. Bush was president, and have made at least two tries to reach each of the US Presidents since Bush, they sent confirmation of receipt. Obama sent a little bug that deleted the email receipt, and Joe Biden sent the exact same one, but I still have the receipt the White House sent, last time I looked. They all want to play stupid, as though they did not recieve any important news about US Takeover by a Canadian terror army the uses poison gasses to kill the US Citizens so the Canadians can replace the US citizens.

The reason for that, the reason that the WH won‘t send help is that everyone of the elected officials in DC and all of the State Governors were all “elected” by Canadians who are using the names of millions of murdered US Voters.

All of the US Government was elected by murderers, who are also impostors.

That is why there has been no help sent to stop the terrorism.

911 Emergency Phone Service is manned with Canadian terror soldiers and SAG actors who are waiting there to dispatch assassins to anyone who reports terrorism, murder, poison gas, etc.

Same at FBI.Tips.Gov. It’s manned with terror soldiers. When I make a report there, assassins come to my house to kill me.

I have made a dozen or so attempts to get help from FBI. I called a few times, and was attacked by state police who filled me with tasers. The taser guns have two darts, they used the two darts, then went back to the squad car to get another taser gun, and shot those two darts at me when I telephoned FBI.

I went to FBI in Medford in Person twenty years ago, that did not work for getting any help when the terror army was murdering the Fourth Graders at Manzanita Elementary School by taking the students on one-way feild trips, the buses returned without any kids on them. I think I remember Celine Dion was on one of those buses to animal park in Eugene or Salem Oregon area.

no one will help.

The celebrity women are too pretty, and they serve the terrorism by distracting any real police that might do an investigation. no one is going to arrest Celine Dion, even if she is on the bus where no students returned from the field trip.

That is the kind of services that SAG can provide to the murders. As long as Antonio Bandaras and Vanna White are around, there will be no investigation, just a hotel room by the hour is all that will happen for entertaining federal investigators.

Today’s WH Press Brief included Psaki saying “There is a Range on the Table”. This Tweet says the range is between -24 and 18, is German, is nation wide, if think about what the tweet really is suggesting, nation wide is the message, German is the nation. The Range is on the table, that cannot be good. Go listen to Press Secretary Jen Psaki for yourself from today, that press brief was live as the sheriffs came to my house, they had a live view of what I was doing on my computer as I was arranging the photos, getting them from the hijacked Yahoo mail, and saving them after putting the Stone Man stamp on them. The people at the news brief commented about the label I used as I was doing that in Microsoft Paint and commented live in code of that, as it was not expected that I would put a water mark on my photos so Monroe can’t easily steal them to change the story.

Jen Psaki’s Wardrobe change videos that were available yesterday at the same time when she was also wearing that blue/purple dress with the hole in it are all purged in classic Google fashion.

The hole in the side of Paski’s dress means “Pay-Per-View”. The “ShoveRon” Black & White dress she changed into videos are all gone, not available to see on Twitter today.

The terror nieghbors are coninueing to release airborne poison gasses right now and all day. My symptoms are worsening.’

My vision was nearly perfect this morning, but now I can barely see, Monroe’s are still blowing the poison gasses into the ambient air and around my house.

It’s no wonder why there are no reports of real terrorism anywhere other than on this Tumblr account, no one can survive unless they have the kind of knowledge that I do, that the nitrous gas is flammable, but this other gas that causes the circulation problems and rash, and leg swelling, I don’t think is flammable.

This thing here reminds me of my visit to the Dole Pineapple Plantation in Hawaii. I think it’s close to the Maui Isthmus. There is a maze/labirynth there sort of like that snow maze there.

Is A Taser A Deadly Weapon?

In the absence of a gun or baton, law enforcement officers often carry Tasers in order to either control a violent or potentially violent individual while minimizing the risk of serious injury.[1] In 48 states, the use of Tasers and/or stun guns is considered legal. Tasers are prohibited in Rhode Island and Hawaii.[2] In many states, however, there are restrictions for use, and in Illinois, a handgun license is required to own the device. Why do these laws vary so significantly across states? Are all police officers equipped with a Taser/stun gun as well as a firearm?

In 2019, Taser-production company Axon claimed nearly 400,000 patrol officers carry Tasers.[3] While these devices have become an essential tool for many police departments, particularly in situations where deadly force (a firearm) is not required, some reports suggest they are less than reliable. Between 2015 and 2017, over 250 fatal police shootings occurred after a Taser failed to incapacitate a suspect. While Axon has alleged an effectivity rate upwards of 80%, data suggests its closer to 50%.[4]

Since 2001, some 500 people in the U.S. have died after being shocked by a stun gun after either arrest or in jail.[4] After the death of Georgia man in 2012, Amnesty International called for stricter limits on taser use by the police. Among several hundred cases reviewed by Amnesty, they uncovered that 98% of individuals who died after being subject to stun guns were unarmed and shocked multiple times.[5]

So, if Tasers are in fact less effective, whatever the cause, why are more Americans not concerned? Perhaps because the blame often goes to the use of the firearms. Neither of these options is ideal. However, instead of the instinct to use firearms at all, maybe police training should focus on officers using Tasers. If Taser use was more standardized, it is more likely that companies like Axon would be inclined to make the necessary improvements to the devices.

Axon recently settled a lawsuit with a police officer who claimed the Taser was ineffective. While the majority of individuals typically claim a Taser is too strong, this officer alleged she was in danger because the Taser was too weak.[6] This lawsuit provides an example of the disparities in Taser products, and how greater accountability on behalf of Axon could be a solution.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is currently being sued by Axon, as the company believes it is being unfairly targeted after acquiring a smaller weapons company.[7] While this lawsuit may have little direct effect on Taser products, the publicity for Axon has the potential to bring change. In considering solutions and causes of police violence and ineffectiveness, it is critical we look at the tools they are provided.

Health Inspections Every year, the government assigns inspectors to conduct a formal review of nursing homes for regulatory purposes to meet the mandates outlined for Medicare and Medicaid, this aims to measure and improve the safety of residents across providers. Facilities may also be inspected when complaints are submitted or based on a reported incident. When noncompliance is identified, the facility is served a citation that indicates which regulation that was identified, along with the severity of the incident. Nursing homes are subsequently required to execute a program of resolution in order to meet compliance. Some scenarios require enforcement actions to be applied, such as a civil monetary penalty or withholding of payment(s), to incentivize resolution in a timely manner. Penalties Facilities are applied 2 types of penalties due to non-compliance / accumulation of incidents. Civil penalties are monetary fines that may be applied to a facility based on citations / infractions identified during a review. The severity of a penalty is defined primarily by the size and frequency of the infraction. Quality of Residence Care There are 3 types of resident care ratings, but for this exercise, we primarily focused on the overall quality measure rating. The quality measures (QMs) include 17 data points that are derived from clinical information reported by the respective nursing home and also from Medicare claims data submitted for payment. Ratings are calculated for the QM domain using the 4 most recent quarters for which data are available. A nursing home receives points contingent on performance on each measure (weighting distribution is not equal). Staffing Staffing research is submitted regularly by the facility and is adjusted for the requirement of the facilities residents. For each of registered nurse staff and total staffing, a 1 - 5 rating is applied according to definitions established for each category. These ratings are subsequently combined to assign an overall staffing rating. As an example, to get an overall staffing rating of 5 stars, nursing homes must earn a rating of 5 stars for both registered nurses and total staffing. Nursing homes could also be assigned a 1 star rating should they not have a registered nurse on-site daily, and do not submit staffing data, or which the data cannot be verified.

Quarterbacking for the infant team was Walpole, Massachusetts native Butch Songin. His rifle arm matched the makeup of the AFL high flying offensive nature. 4th in passing yards per game (176.9). 2nd in passer rating (70.9). 4th in total passing yards (2,476). 4th in passing touchdowns (22).

Butch was from the humblest of beginnings. At 36 this was Songin’s most prominent feature in professional football. Though he did quarterback the Hamilton Tiger-Cats to the 1953 Grey Cup in the Canadian Football League, the National Football League overlooked Songin. From 1947 to 1949, Songin was the starting QB for the Boston College Eagles. He completed 192 of 385 passes for 2,534 yards, 30 touchdowns, and 24 interceptions. In 1950 he was selected 247th overall by the Cleveland Browns. He would never play a game for the team or for the NFL.

Luckily for Songin, football wasn’t the only sport he was good at. Songin was an All-American for Boston College playing hockey. Winning the 1948-49 National Championship as captain of the squad. While the National Hockey League also gave Songin the cold shoulder, his nephew Tom played right-wing for the Boston Bruins. Songin seemed over the idea of playing football when the Patriots came knocking at his door. He was coaching high school football - and would still moonlight in that role while quarterbacking the Patriots for the 1960 season.

In his debut for the Patriots Songin threw for 12 of 24 for 145 yards, two interceptions, and his lone touchdown was caught by Jim Colclough. Hailing from Medford, Colclough lead the Patriots in the three of the first four seasons in receiving, compiling an impressive 2,984 yards, 31 touchdowns and 173 receptions before Gino Cappelletti rose above him in the pecking order. Colclough went on to compile 283 receptions for 5,001 yards and 39 touchdowns for the Boston Patriots over the 1960–1968 seasons.

Boston’s first ever win came at the expense of the New York Titans coached by the legendary Hall of Fame quarterback Sammy Baugh. In the dilapidated Polo Grounds the Patriots stormed back from a 24-7 deficit, the twosome of Songin and punter Tom Greene cut the Titans lead to just 3. Greene hit Oscar Lofton; later Songin hit Colclough.

With 12 ticks left on the clock New York still lead. Fortunately for their opponent the Victory Formation yet to have been incorporated. Titans center Mike Hudock snap was low and punter Rick Sapienza fumbled the ball. A scrum ensued, both teams literally kicking a chance at recovering the pigskin away until defensive back Chuck Shonta snatched it from the ground and ran into the end zone for the game-winning touchdown.

Baugh and Titans owner Harry Wismer were irate afterwards and filed a complain to the league office claiming that there is video evidence of the Patriots’ illegally kicking the football. Commissioner Joe Foss would acknowledge that the officials made a mistake in no whistling the play dead, but decided against overturning the result of the game. The Patriots first ever victory in franchise history came off a technicality.

Ultimately, it he Patriots finished 5-9, last in their division. Though their twelfth game in franchise history against the eventual AFL Champion Houston Oilers would be the first sellout in the history of the new league. New England proved to be indeed an era that can house a professional football team.

Songin suffered a neck injury and missed the final two games of the season. The Patriots looked eager to replace their aging, withered quarterback with somebody that would excite the fans and raise their ceiling. With the 35th pick in the 1961 AFL Draft the Patriots took Georgia College QB Fran Tarkenten. Unfortunately, Tarkenton chose to play for the NFL’s Minnesota Vikings. The Patriots were left still without a quarterback.

In the middle of the 1960 campaign the Patriots acquired journeyman quarterback Babe Parilli from the Oakland Raiders. His first start was on opening day of the ‘61 season against the Titans. He threw for just 92 yards and the Patriots lost 21-20. By week 5 general manager Edward McKeever believed the team to be underachieving. The Patriots were sitting at 2-3, despite housing AFL All-Pros Tom Addison, Fred Bruney, Gino Cappelletti, and Larry Garron. Saban was relieved of his duties and Holovak was installed as his replacement. From then on, things turned around. Under Holovak’s direction the Patriots would finish 7-1-1, good for a 9-4-1 mark on the season, one game behind the eventual champion Oilers. They tied the Oilers in the 6th week of the season and had the Patriots eked that one out instead, they’d head to the AFL Championship Game. They were a George Blanda kick away from going from Worst to First.

Parilli, a Rochester, Pennsylvania native, held a clipboard for the majority of his career. Drafted out of Kentucky, Parilli played under the legendary Paul “Bear” Bryant. Receiving accolades such as consensus All-American in 1950 and 1951 and was fourth in Heisman Trophy voting in both years.

In the six-years Parilli spent on the NFL’s Green Bay Packers, later the Cleveland Browns, and his lone season on the AFL’s Oakland Raiders he started 18 games, appearing in 67, threw for 39 touchdowns and 79 interceptions. Despite all of that the Patriots entrusted him with the keys and rewarded their faith in him instantly. Parilli lead the AFL in completion percentage in 1961 (52.5). 1961 was the season Cappelletti become a star scoring 8 touchdowns making the All-Star team.

In their first season under Songin’s stewardship the Patriots ranked dead last in the AFL in points scored (286). Less than a full season with Parilli at the helm the Patriots soared to number 2 (413). Second in passing touchdowns (29) and last in interceptions (21).

In 1962 the Patriots duplicated their 9-4-1 record from the previous season, this time two games behind division leader Houston. They had the lead up until November 18th during a contest against the Oilers when Parilli suffered a broken collar bone. They would go on to lose despite a solid performance from backup Tom Yewcic, 21-17 and lose first place in their division. If Parilli hadn’t gone down with an injury or if the Patriots didn’t tie the Buffalo Bills in their November 3rd matchup they’d represent the Eastern division in the title game. Another promising season derailed by happenstance.

Still, the Patriots were on the rise. Ron Burton and Colclough each had 40 receptions. Burton reached 1,000 yards from scrimmage, and Colclough’s 10 receiving touchdowns was 2nd best in the AFL, behind only Dallas Texans’ All-Pro Chris Burford (12).

After 1962 the Patriots would move to the Red Sox’ home in Fenway Park.

Behind Parilli the Patriots become one of the most exciting franchises in the AFL and looked posed to continue their momentum into the 1963 season. The Patriots finished 7-6-1. The defense anchored by All-Pro Larry Eisenhauer, All-Stars Ron Hall, Bob Dee, Nick Buoniconti, Tom Addison, and team leader in interceptions Bob Suci allowed the 2nd fewest points in the AFL for ‘63 (257) only two more than the eventual champion San Diego Chargers. The offense wasn’t as stellar. Parilli completed just 45 percent of his passes, threw 24 interceptions and the air game was only better than the Dick Wood’s New York Jets and Mickey Slaughter’s Denver Broncos.

Scheduled to play Buffalo on the 24th of November the AFL postponed their slate of games after John F. Kennedy was assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald in Dallas, Texas the day before. While the NFL decided to play their Sunday games, the AFL didn’t believe their players and coaches would be in the right state of mind to perform.

"We were quite proud of that,'' said Boston Patriots wideout/placekicker Gino Cappelletti. "Our league made the decision not to play and thought it was the right thing to do.

"This was the right thing to do because the whole country was watching the historic events unfolding on television. It was a no-brainer for us, but the stodgy old NFL went on and played.''

Under the dark cloud of President Kennedy’s assassination the Boston rallied around the Patriots as they clinched the division crown over the Bills in a tie-breaker game to decide who’ll challenge the Chargers to the AFL title.

Parilli struggled throughout 1963, but on the day of December 28th he redeemed himself accumulating 300 passing yards and 2 touchdowns en route to a 26-8 demolishing of the favored Bills. Larry Gannon caught each of those touchdown passes. The Bills QB duo of Jack Kemp and Daryle Lamonica combined for 19 of 45, 301 yards, a touchdown and four interceptions.

But the Patriots in their first and only AFL Championship Game would run into a brick wall known as the greatest team in the league’s history, the Chargers, losing spectacularly 51-10.

With the Oilers core aging, it seemed the Patriots were the ideal successors to the AFL’s Eastern division. Optimism was still prevalent entering 1964. The Patriots fared far better posting a 10-3-1 record, losing the final game of the season to the Bills and subsequently the division title and a spot in the AFL Championship Game against the Chargers. Had they won the championship game would’ve been played at Fenway Park as the team with the best record held home-field advantage, there was no such thing as a neutral playing field in the AFL or NFL in the pre-Super Bowl era.

Parilli had himself a career season earning his first, and only, 1st team All-Pro honors, leading the league in touchdowns (31) and passing yards (3,465). Gino Cappelletti lead the team with 49 receptions for 865 yards. Art Graham wasn’t far behind him with 45 receptions, and AFL All-Star Larry Gannon chipped in 40. Cappelletti lead the league in total points scored (155), aided by his reliable kicking foot converting on 25 attempts. Cappelletti won AFL MVP honors as the Patriots as a team reached their collective peak.

The AFL also was at its peak of its own powers. Many pondered whether the ‘63 champion Chargers could beat the NFL champion Chicago Bears in a contest. Nobody entertained the idea of George Blanda’s Oilers or Len Dawson’s Texans of accomplishing such a feat. Perhaps any team from the AFL in ‘64 you match up against the NFL champion Cleveland Browns bests them. The Bills, Chargers, Patriots combined to allow less points than the Browns did 279.6 to Cleveland’s 293. Even though the browns had Paul Brown and Jim Brown, the Patriots and the AFL’s best presented a clash of styles that could have benefited the AFL in a hypothetical matchup.

The AFL exploited an error in how the NFL regarded talent. Parilli was a typical NFL castoff given a second chance by the upstart AFL. The Patriots sent fullback Alan Miller, halfback Dick Christy and defensive tackle Hal Smith west for Parilli and fullback Billy Lott to the Raiders. Lott led the team in rushing in 1961, gaining 461 yards on an even 100 carries while catching 32 passes for 333 more yards and scoring a total of 11 touchdowns, but he ran the ball only 43 times over his two remaining seasons.

The trade for the Raiders turned into a rare misstep in an era where they were considered the gold standard in excellence.

Parilli’s 1964 mark of 31 touchdowns stood as a Patriots franchise record until Tom Brady broke it into pieces in 2007. While Parilli is enshrined in the collegiate and Patriots Hall of Fames, respectfully, he hasn’t sniffed Canton.

From 1961 to 1966 the Patriots suffered just one losing season, winning on average 8.1 games a year, the ‘65 campaign really skews how good they were at this time. Excluding the 4-8-2 season, the Patriots averaged 8.8 wins. If a couple of scenarios had gone differently the Patriots would be viewed as not only the class of the AFL, but in an area where the Celtics, Red Sox, and Bruins have such mystic and allure to go along with their laundry list of accomplishments and titles the pre-Brady/Belichick Patriots would’ve never been given the label as the black sheep of the foursome.

Up until 1980 the Patriots finished with a winning record more often than not. Housed two MVP’s (Cappelletti and Nance). Quality quarterbacks in Parilli and later Steve Grogan. Famous, well regarded head coaches like Holovak and Chuck Fairbanks lead them to victories and playoff berths. They even snuck into a Super Bowl in 1985... of course they received a throat slashing at the hands of the Bears, but hey, at least they got there. Not many franchises can say that.

What was the most glorious thing reading about these teams is the fact they played at Fenway Park. When the lease on Nickerson field was up the Patriots moved nearly 2 miles east to Fenway. "We felt like we were legitimate because it was a major league venue," Cappelletti recalls the first time the team entered the sacred confines of Fenway.

Preston Peak via Youngs Valley, Six Rivers National Forest

‘Twas the big day of the Northern California hiking road trip. Preston Peak is the highest mountain in the Northern Pacific Coast Ranges standing at 7,313 ft tall. On the heels of finishing the California County High Points the day before, Daryn was now only one peak away from finishing the California P2Ks as well. Joining Daryn would be myself, Asaka, Andrew and Kerry. Dean had some back pain and decided to hang back and do an easier hike instead. We were looking at around an 18 mile day, so we started off down the trail at 6:30am. The first 3.5 miles were mostly downhill along an old dirt road. The further we dropped, the more I lamented the fact that we would have to climb back up the road later that afternoon. The descent went by quickly and we took a short break alongside Youngs Valley.

There were many people camping in the surrounding area. There was a Frisbee golf course set up along the outskirts of the meadow. We left Youngs Valley and continued towards Bell Echo Camp. There were several forks in the road but our GPS track allowed us to stay on the right path. In a clearing we could see Bear Mountain which we climbed the day before.

We took a wrong turn below Cyclone Gap and ended up at an old mine, but we quickly corrected our error. The remaining distance to Raspberry Lake consisted of several annoying ups and downs, but we eventually emerged at the northern outlet of the lake. It took us 3 hours to cover the 7 miles to the crystal clear lake.

It was starting to get warm and the water was very inviting. I promised myself I would jump in on our return. The trail ended here and it was up to us to find an ambiguous use trail along the ridge above the southern edge of the lake. We started off bushwhacking through manzanita, often discovering a possible trail before it would disappear into thicker brush. The rock was loose, the vegetation aplenty and the weather was gradually getting warmer and warmer. The route became easier once we reached the top of the ridge, and faint signs of previous passage were visible.

Now all we had to do was climb along the ridge in a southeastern direction.

I must admit, this section was brutal with the heat. I was hiking slowly and Asaka was even slower. Asaka and I bickered at each other as we inched our way up the rocky slopes. I kept thinking of the many more difficult hikes we had done in preparation, but our energy was sapped.

Little Preston Peak stood to our east.

Twin Peaks and the Pacific Ocean were visible to the west.

The last three hundred feet consisted of some interesting granite slabs. It was mostly class 2, but route finding required patience. We were exposed to the sun, so I paused at some of the remaining snow fields sprinkled about. I ate snow and put more under my cap to cool off. While I was surprised by Asaka’s slow pace, I wasn’t too disappointed because Andrew and Kerry were even slower.

I watched Daryn as he hiked ahead to claim the summit. Daryn was the second person on record to complete the California P2K list, and I only expect a handful of others to finish the list in my lifetime.

I shortly joined him on the summit. I gave him a simple congratulations. To the southeast was Mt Shasta.

To the northeast was Mt McLoughlin.

To the north was El Capitan.

To the northwest was Broken Rib Mountain.

To the east were Bear Mountain and Twin Peaks.

To the south were the Trinity Alps.

The celebration was not much different than any other successful summit. Someone brought a small bottle of champagne which was the only difference. I was keen to start heading back, and even more eager to jump into Raspberry Lake. From the start, it was obvious Asaka and I would be much quicker going downhill and the others had no interest in swimming. Therefore we agreed that Asaka and I would go ahead and swim until they arrived at the lake. We made quick progress down the slabs looking forward to our refreshing reward.I hadn’t showered in a few days so getting cleaned up was a bonus. We entered the lake via an outstretched log and spent the next hour basking and refilling our waters. We soon became cool and hydrated. We were lounging to the point that our hands became pruney. We started to wonder what was taking the others so long. Before we could get too concerned, Daryn popped over the ridge and started hiking down toward us. We figured the others were close behind. Once Daryn was in audible range, he announced that Kerry had slipped down the slabs and a helicopter was on the way. Asaka and I were both in shock. Once Daryn reached our location, he gave us more details. Kerry was alive and not seriously injured, but he was not in a strong enough condition to hike out under his own power. Andrew was waiting alongside him. Daryn wanted us to fill the empty water bottles he had with him, since he planned to bring them back up. We asked what we could do to help, and he suggested that we hike back and alert Dean of the situation. I was very content with this role; rather than wait with the victim, we had the responsibility to return to the trailhead immediately. Asaka and I quickly put on our shoes and began our 7 mile hike back to Dean. We heard a helicopter within a half hour of leaving the lake, which was much quicker than I expected. It was a strange feeling seeing the chopper off in the distance knowing it was for someone in our group. The hike back to Youngs Valley was easy and uneventful. The swim in the lake really refreshed our muscles. On the final ascent, we stepped over a nasty worm-like serpent. It was the first time I’ve seen a rubber boa, and hopefully the last.

We approached the parking lot just after sunset. Dean was waiting in his car as expected and we told him the news. He didn’t believe us at first, but I assured him that we weren’t joking. I told him I expected Daryn and Andrew to arrive 30 minutes to an hour later. With our task accomplished, we began our long drive to Medford where we planned to stay the night.

The next morning we planned to visit Kerry in the hospital but after texting Dean it seemed that he was doing alright and would be released from the hospital within the hour. The injuries included broken ribs, a broken nose and a concussion. Not sure if we would even make it to the hospital in time, we began our long drive back home. On the way, drove to the top of Mt Ashland, a prominent peak just west of Highway 5.

To the east I noticed an interesting rock formation which I’ve noticed in the past. I wanted to investigate and after a lot of convincing, Asaka agreed to join me. Luckily this bonus peak was just a minor detour.

From the parking lot, we followed an easy trail to the base of the rock. Then the interesting part began. There was a group scrambling down the rock so we knew the peak was doable.

The climb was class 3 with one tough move. This was very fun and I’m glad we went out of our way to climb this.

The summit was very windy but the views were great. To the south was Mt Shasta.

Now I was fully satisfied. We drove back to the Bay Area that night.
