the orkney trip
part 4
-
Day 4
Rather uneventful day, cycling from Deerness to Kirkwall. In the morning was greeted by a grey grey shrike perching right on the roof of the Gloup visitor centre a few metres away from me, got a proper look at it through the binoculars but when I got out my phone to take a picture it was gone. I heard that there was one spotted in Dunbar and I didn't even have to twitch for it!
Dead fulmar at Dingyshowe bay, linking Deerness with Upper Sanday.
Inganess bay was the highlight of the day, with an old rusty shipwreck. I was going to camp there, but it was separated from Kirkwall by a whole damn hill which meant half an hour cycling up and down. The bay was rocky too, the only place to camp would be on the fringes of the carpark. So I chickened out and got into Kirkwall's campsite instead.
The Magnus Cathedral and hey John Rae.
Victorians really know how to amuse themselves... It also got me thinking could the cold boys have at one point constructed these things out of boredom and it would be interesting to do the terror characters in this style and do a toy theatre model of the show. This is displayed in the Kirkwall museum.
The moon that night was golden, as seen across the Peedie sea.

OC meme: any or all of -- shaved ice & strawberry for inga & enca! pancake & family for dandelion!
😭🧡!!
🍧 SHAVED ICE - do they still have any objects from their childhood? what significance does it have to them? what would their reaction be if they lost it?
INGA: I haven't thought about Inga's childhood too much yet, but she probably has a few things from back then. Inga and her siblings have always been very close with each other, even if they barely see each other anymore, so I like the idea that these things remind her of them. Perhaps a fruit tree that Vicia helped her plant and take care of at their childhood home. Something with pretty, red-purple leaves and rare, decadent fruits that Inga brought with her to the city she now rules over. Maybe a set of jewelry from Kuzu that he crafted himself. As showy as Inga and Kuzu can be, this set is a little more understated. Something with thin chains and delicate bells, earrings and necklaces and something to decorate her horns. She wouldn't be upset to the point of tears if she lost them, but she would still be very, very, Very upset. Bad mood. Wouldn't host any of her usual events for at least a week and a bit.
ENCA: They have an old, out-of-print vinyl record from one of Edith's first operatic recordings. I think in this iteration of Enca, it's a nostalgic reminder of their childhood. Warm sunset filtering through the windows, little dust motes in the air, the sound of her parent's singing filling the whole house. Edith twirling around with a young Enca in their arms, Enca making little half-chirps as they try to sing along. It's also just a warm reminder of Edith themself. I haven't decided if they just don't get to see each other as often, or if Edith is capital G Gone gone, but suffice to say Enca doesn't see them often (or at all) anymore. If they ever lost it, Enca would most certainly cry. Sure, they could easily find another recording, but it's not going to be this specific, physical copy that Edith gave to her because she liked listening to it so much.
🍓 STRAWBERRY - do they eat their fruit & veg? what is their favourite fruit or vegetable?
INGA: Loves eating exceptionally high quality fruit and vegetables, though she doesn't like eating raw veggies very much. She likes when they're in the upper extremes of texture and flavor. If she she's eating sweet mango, it has to be the sweetest! mango. If she's eating lettuce, it has to be the crispest! lettuce. This lemon has to be so sour that it hurts her tongue. She's not a picky eater, but she loves to indulge her senses as much as possible, whenever possible. Her favorite is passion fruit! Likes the tanginess against the sweetness and also thinks the pulpy seeds are fun.
ENCA: Also likes to eat fruits and vegetables, but they tend to like mild or bitter flavors. Things like pear or pomelo, watercress or bittermelon. She really likes blood oranges! Just sweet enough, not too tangy, has that sort of berry flavor, and a pretty ruby color.
🥞 PANCAKE - what is their comfort breakfast?
Mostly warm and savory things. Macaroni soup with chicken broth and chunks of ham, or rice porridge topped with a fried egg. Maybe a big, steamed or baked bun with roast pork or sweet red bean filling. Whatever combination of items, Dandi's comfort breakfast has to have at least a fried egg or some type of bright, round orange fruit (usually citrus). Really strong memory from their childhood in The Garage of sitting at the table, swinging their feet while someone peeled mandarins and fed them little slices, or helped them get a fried egg onto a piece of toast. A smile and a little nod while they ate and saying to Dandi, "Best to start the day with a bit of the sun."
👪 FAMILY - what is their family like? what is your ocs relationship to them?
The people of The Garage are a group of mechanics, pilots, and engineers who, upon finding a young Dandelion with nowhere to go, collectively went, "Our child now." I haven't thought out individual members so much, but I imagine they're an eclectic bunch who are nevertheless caring and supportive of each other. They're the kind of people who would do Big Sandwich Night. Most, if not all of these people never raised a child before, but they did their best to learn and sought help when needed. Did their utmost to be just as caring and supportive. Taught Dandelion different skills, fed them a lot of good food, instilled in them an appreciation for Big Robot.
Dandi grew up close with their family, and they're still close with them now. They still frequently visit The Garage and go back to do maintenance on Lucky Punch. Always a good time getting everyone together to eat, or clambering up the scaffolding so they can get a better look at the cool new robot arm from the latest salvage run that somebody slapped onto their own mech.
#thank you!!#also benni invited to big sandwich night or equivalent always 😌#asks#rebootsnake#amberglow#courier mech pilots#(or whatever this setting ends up being called)#inga#enca#dandelion

42 / 52 recipes in 2024 | one pot hainanese chicken rice via red house spice
ive gotten obsessed w inga lam's videos recently so i made this bc she did a recipe like this in her rice cooker recipes video. very easy and succesful — hardest things were chopping scallion and i had to defrost my chicken a bit more but seriously this is extremely easy. its awesome. cooked fast too — my rice cooker went off in like 20-25 min and then i let it sit for 15 bc i was busy and it turned out great. not the most delicious thing (maybe cos my jasmine rice is ALWAYS mushy lol, i can try w short grain next time) but like, solid.
adjustments:
made half recipe which turned out perfect for my little rice cooker
used jasmine rice as a recommendation from the recipe notes
🥚🥚🥚.5 / 5 — would make again for a quick easy relatively tasty low sodium meal

unfortunately for my peace of mind i am thinking about the disparities between The Time Away as shown in er wird töten and wo ist nur mein schatz geblieben. the doylist explanation is obviously very simple they just didn't know what they were Going to do when they wrote er wird töten. but if you ignore all that and try to make it match up on a watsonian level there's so many awful little implications. watch er wird töten with the knowledge that 99% of the flashbacks are a lie and his explanation for them definitely is and you'll see what i mean. there's the full truth of what Actually happened, which we only have stedefreund's account of because he was the only one who left alive. there's whatever he told the crime couple (maller and kempf) and whatever the three of them ended up telling the bka. there's the lie the bka told them to tell (afghanistan, presumably). and maybe that's exactly what he told inga and maybe it's not. maybe there's more truth in it. maybe there's less. why the chickens? why the marketplace? in the flashbacks he sees birds' mangled bodies in their cages, the blood dripping. there were no chickens. his colleague, begging him for death. his colleague got shot in the head. was dead on impact. never asked him for anything. in the lie he is helpless, motionless, unable to do anything. in the truth, or nearer to it, he is there with a goal and a plan. he watches a woman choose her own way out. picks up the knife. why lie about the dead girls? why lie about the chickens? why tell a story and leave out every knife?
You know what the first time i saw this bit i went Awww and then forgot about it but now that i've seen Wo ist nur mein Schatz geblieben it's kind of fucked like. think about it. pov you are mister stedefreund. Get this undercover job to do you're chill with it and everything you think you are doing a good thing. something goes wrong and a girl kills herself in front of you because she thinks you'll do it if she doesn't (that is the role you are playing the desire you tried to convince her of. she believed it. you didn't have the time to tell her that it's not real). A man comes in the room and sees her. the knife. there is blood on it already not far from your hands. the man laughs. he expects you to laugh too. your job would demand that you laugh. the knife. there is more blood on it. it is in your hands. someone shoots. they keep shooting. there is blood on you. you are the only living thing left in that room. they bury the bodies for you, you don't know where. you don't tell anyone. you go back to whence you came and walk in a room and the person who maybe knows you best looks at you what do you do then what do you even do you can't look at anything you spill tea you will find a man dead by a knife today you walk over to her. She ruffles your hair. you let her
#i love liars!!!!#i love characters who might be lying and might just have convinced themselves that it's true because the alternative is unbearable!!!!!!!!#tatort bremen

Inga! She looks like she’s almost ready to start laying, I just love her purple face! She’s a dainty little thing, you can see how small she is next to Maya in the first pic (though Maya’s a bit of a giant), but that’s normal for Hedemoras.

Which Chica do you see the little Sebright being a good match for?
And which breed (if not a Sebright lol) do you think FNAF1 Chica would be?
Coloring book chickens!!!
I could easily see Toy Chica as one of these. You know in the late 00s/early 10s when all those games were coming out with weird cel-type shading or heavy outlines? Same vibe.
For Chica Prime, I think she'd be a Cochin! Big hefty golden girl!

Where the World is in the Making - Chapter 13
I wrote this for the Summer 2021 Frozine, huge thank you to @punkpoemprose for putting that together! And to @karis-the-fangirl as always. Here we go
Previous Chapters
Chapter 13
The Solheims had been good people. Still were, Kristoff was sure. It was Mrs Inga Solheim who had nursed his mother through her last illness, who had said to Kristoff, after - Well, get your things together. Don’t you want to see what it’s like out West? And he had - not that he had anything else to do or anywhere else to go - so he’d pulled together the few things that he was sure were his and joined them in the back of their covered wagon. They’d inched their way across the country, along with the other two wagons of Solheims (all three were brothers, and each had a wife, and between them six children when they set out and seven when they arrived, not counting Kristoff), and he’d been quiet and anxious, desperate to prove he could be useful, that he was worth taking all that way. He’d worked hard for them and learnt a lot, and until the day he died he’d be overwhelmingly grateful for the chance they’d given him.
And now, for something else.
There was an interesting item in the newspaper last week, Mrs Solheim had written. An article about how there aren’t enough women out West. Good men with good farms who can’t find a wife. And some have apparently been placing advertisements in the newspaper to find one! What an idea! But it seems some have been successful. You should try it, Kristoff! I’m sure you must be lonely.
What an idea, indeed. He’d rolled his eyes and ignored it, but she’d mentioned it again, and again, and eventually he’d done it just so she’d stop. He’d never in a million years thought he’d actually get an applicant. He hadn’t thought he’d wanted one.
Anna was weeding the vegetable garden. The plants were all full-grown now, tall and green, and she was kneeling - she never had much regard for her skirts - between them as she worked.
With her help, he’d been able to repair the fields after the storm, and lost far less than he’d feared. With her help, the chickens were happy and gave plenty of eggs; the cow was happy and gave plenty of milk (and the goat was happy, too, though his high spirits were not usually a cause for celebration). With her help, the garden had flourished, and was producing enough that she and Elsa had already spent a day with Marta Ogg preserving and canning and would have plenty more to put up before the season was over.
Anna suddenly jumped back onto her heels with an “Ouch!” and Kristoff hurried over.
“Are you alright?”
“Oh - yes - thank you -” she peered at her finger. “A little bit of something just ran under my fingernail. But it’s not bleeding so I guess it didn’t go too far. Is it nearly dinner?”
“I’ve been out in the fields, you tell me.”
“Elsa’s cooking. I keep thinking I smell something but I can’t work out what.” She waved her hands at him until he backed up, then shuffled along on her knees to the next section of the vegetable bed. “I like it when she cooks. She’s a much better cook than I am.”
Kristoff opened his mouth and then closed it again, choosing to kneel next to her rather than speak. Anna laughed. “Thank you.”
“I don’t mean - the two of you have different talents.”
“Okay.”
“You complement each other.”
“Well, maybe that’s true.”
“She wouldn’t have much to cook without you here, doing this.”
Anna sat back and hugged her knees. “Sometimes I still can’t believe I’m here,” she said. “Sometimes everything before seems like a dream.”
She looked at him, and no matter how muddy her skirts or how much of the dirt had found its way to her face, her eyes were always that same perfect clear blue.
“And I’m glad,” she said. “I’m glad I’m not there any more.”
“Glad to be out of the city? Away from - people that were unkind?”
“No, you don’t understand. Before…” Anna sighed. “I didn’t do anything. I mean. I called on people, and I went out and danced and talked to more people, and I embroidered and I looked pretty and none of it had any point. Nothing I did made anyone’s life better, or easier. I was just - passing the time. My whole life. Looking pretty and passing time.”
Anna sighed again, then reached over and plucked another weed from the soil.
“There you go,” she said. “I pulled up one weed, and I’ve already been more useful than I would have been in a whole week back in the city.”
“You like to be useful.”
“I don’t like to be useless. Or pointless.”
They both sat there, among the green plants, beneath the endless sky. Kristoff could feel it, building, and he was leaning in towards her ever so slightly when Anna said abruptly, “I want to mean something,” and turned her eyes to his again, blue as the ocean and clear as the running stream.
It’s slow, sometimes, but it wears away bit by bit - or comes crashing through all at once - and nothing is the same after.
He leant towards her again, just as Elsa called them to the house for dinner.
-----
The narrow bed in the tiny room was familiar enough now. It almost felt cosy. Before coming here Anna had had her own bedroom for years, but it had never been quiet - there was always noise on the streets outside, or people passing in the corridors. Out here, being alone would have been deathly silent without the sound of Elsa’s breathing.
It wasn’t silent outside tonight, though. She could hear someone singing.
Or rather, not ‘someone’. It was a man’s voice, and there was only one man within miles, so it must be Kristoff singing. Anna couldn’t make out any words. She’d heard him whistling before, around the farm, but never singing.
She wriggled out of the bed. Elsa stirred and opened her eyes.
“I just need to, um,” Anna said, knowing that Elsa would assume she was going to the outhouse; sure enough, her sister gave a little nod and closed her eyes again.
The summer air was warm and Anna barely regretted not picking up a shawl. As she pushed the barn door open she felt a brief pang, remembering another night that she’d come out to the barn in her nightdress - but that quickly disappeared, replaced by the sight in front of her. Kristoff was sitting against the far wall, with his straw hat upside down in his lap, and the hat was full of kittens; and he was singing to them in the warm glow of a lantern.
Anna stood there for one long, breathless moment. She didn’t know the song. She didn’t even know what language it was in, although she could guess that it was Norwegian. It was a soft song; a lullaby. The kittens seemed to be appreciating it, cuddling up together in the hat, and for a second Anna thought she was going to cry. Then Kristoff finished his verse, looked up and saw her.
“Anna,” he said, and cleared his throat, sitting up straighter to a chorus of irritated meows.
“I heard you singing,” she said, walking all the way into the barn and closing the door behind her.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to wake you -”
“You didn’t. What song is that?” she said, sitting down next to him and tucking her feet beneath her.
Kristoff looked at his hands for a moment. “My mother used to sing it,” he said.
“When you were little?”
He smiled. “Yes.” He hesitated again, then said “I don’t want to forget it.”
Sometimes Anna got so caught up in the everyday that she forgot all kinds of things. Like, for example, the fact that they were both orphans. She knew Kristoff’s childhood had been very different to her own. If she tried, Anna could remember her mother tucking her into bed with a soft lullaby, but she could more often remember a nursemaid putting her to bed and blowing out the candle. A goodnight from her mother was usually a brief kiss; a goodnight from her father was a nod. And every day it grew fainter and her memories rearranged themselves to match the handful of photographs in the bottom of her and Elsa’s trunk.
It was better to think about the present and the future than the past. She knew that. And her mind obligingly presented her with an image - Kristoff singing that lullaby to a baby. Or maybe to an older child, as he tucked the blankets around them, and then he’d look at his wife and smile -
Anna turned her face away - she knew she was blushing. Now she remembered long ago asking a nursemaid where babies came from, and being given a confusing story about storks and cabbage patches and parcels sent directly from Heaven by God Himself. Now she was here in the warm soft lantern glow with her husband, and when she looked up he was watching her. He’d nearly kissed her in the vegetable patch earlier, she was sure. Not too far from the cabbages. The thought made her laugh and she swallowed it in a yawn.
“You should go back to bed,” Kristoff said. He’d put his hat down, and the kittens had escaped; one was sitting on his foot.
“I’m not tired,” Anna said, sitting up straighter. “I couldn’t sleep, actually.”
“Really? I thought I was working you hard enough. Obviously not.”
“I’m surprised you can sleep out here at all.”
“I’m used to it.”
“It’s not fair. You work hard too.”
“I’m a man.”
“You’re a person.”
He smiled at her indignance. “Well, if we have a good harvest, maybe I can get some lumber.”
“Mr. Ogg said they’d help!”
“I can manage. I did the rest myself.”
“Mmhmm. Like you darned your own socks. A person can be too self-reliant.”
“What’s wrong with my house?”
“Nothing! Except -” Except we don’t have our own bedroom. No, she would never be bold enough to say that out loud, and now she was blushing again.
If he kisses me now, Anna thought, there’s no one to stop us. Every other person and animal within miles is sleeping. The thought made her heart thump in her chest, and she couldn’t think of anything to say to cover her embarrassment so instead she turned away, pretending she was watching one of the kittens.
She looked up when Kristoff put his hand on her left shoulder. “Anna,” he said, and ran his hand down her arm, stopping at her hand, raising it so that her ring shone in the light of the lantern. There was an ache in her chest when she met his gaze, and everything before this moment felt like a dream. The only thing that was real was right here and now, where all her choices had led her, to the perfect moment -
He kissed her. Anna knelt up, eager, and her slipper fell off and she caught her knee in her nightdress but Kristoff wrapped an arm round her waist and kissed her again. She still stumbled a little, and steadied herself with her arm on the floor; and then it only required Kristoff to make the smallest movement and they were lying on the blanket, side by side.
For a second they blinked at each other, his arm still round her waist, her hand on his shoulder. Then Anna pressed forward again, pulling herself towards him, kissing him with her whole body against his. She half-expected him to draw back, but he didn’t; instead he ran his hand up her back to her shoulders, holding her in place.
She felt giddy. There was no one to stop them and she didn’t want them to. Alright, maybe there was only a rough blanket over a dirt floor and whatever was in that sack Kristoff used as a pillow, maybe this wasn’t exactly how she’d pictured this, but -
But there was someone to stop them, and that was them. Kristoff pulled his lips from hers and rolled onto his back, exhaling deeply. He closed his eyes for a long second, then opened them and held out his arm. Anna hesitated.
“Come here,” he said. “You didn’t - do anything wrong. It’s just…”
Not like this, was what she knew he meant. As her heartbeat slowed back to normal, Anna realised she had a piece of straw poking her through the back of her nightdress, a kitten trying to climb her braid and a draught through a gap in the boards going places she wouldn’t care to mention. Much as she wished right now that her husband was slightly less considerate, he did have a point. She wriggled over to Kristoff and lay down with her head on his shoulder, smiling a little as she felt him pull the pointy straw off her back and throw it away.
He put his arm around her, his hand on her waist. Anna could hear his heart beating, feel his chest rise and fall with his breathing. It was so comfortable.
She opened her eyes when Kristoff said “Hey. Anna. You don’t want to fall asleep out here.”
Maybe she did. “I‘m good.”
He opened his arm to release her. “Go to bed. It’s late.”
“You don’t want me to stay?”
He looked pained. “I want you to go to bed.”
So she left and went inside. But when she got into her bed, it somehow felt at once both too small and too empty.

The Pelle/Dani Receipts, Post Ten: Plots
After the Ättestupa, stuff moves very, very quickly. Team Hårga ASSEMBLE. Dani has been broken down both by witnessing a gruesome senicide and being forced to look into Pelle’s earnest blue eyes and confront that not only does Christian not love her, but maybe, just maaaaaaybe, she might could love somebody else. Christian is being broken down both by contending with Josh for his mcguffin thesis and being seduced by a cute underage redhead (SO GROSS CHRISTIAN YOU HAVEN’T EVEN TALKED). Plus Simon and Connie, by virtue of completely flipping out and demanding to leave after the Ättestupa, have unwittingly nominated themselves to be off(er)ed first. Once newbloods start disappearing, they disappear at a pretty rapid clip.
Simon and Connie’s disappearances, and Christian’s shrugging indifference to both, trigger Dani big time, as she confronts both how self-absorbed Christian is and how little credit he gives Dani's thoughts. At lunch, after an upset Connie vanishes, Dani is, as usual, seated between Christian and Pelle. As the scene opens, Dani’s back is to Christian and we can’t even see her face because she is looking into Pelle’s smiling eyes. For several seconds. They’re not talking. Just...looking. Like you do. With your buddy what was holding you on your bed and telling you how you deserved better than Christian. And this is the first time we see them since Ari’s impish smash cut from Dani hesitating on the verge of something to Dan’s crushed head.
Dani does eventually ask after Connie, prompting Jarl to give her the super believable official story that she was driven to the train station. Sure, Jarl. And Dani is still having a hard time buying that Simon would just leave without Connie. Especially in the Director’s Cut, we see how Dani notices how devoted they are to each other. But Christian is dismissive, and Dani goes cold. “I could see you possibly doing that,” she says. YASSSS QUEEN. She’s looking straight ahead, jaw set and eyes flinty, as Christian asks her, “What that’s supposed to mean?” She doesn’t answer and Christian should be grateful because the energy is very FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT. As it is, we just see Pelle notice and quickly look away, hiding a spreading smile that is practically another hit of the sunshine motif. Meanwhile, Mark is lured away by Inga, a different kind of fool for love.
Simon, Connie, and Mark down; who’s next? Josh! Thesis Goggles strapped on tight, Josh sneaks into the temple to take pictures of the Rubi Radr and is summarily dispatched by an unknown Hårgan male. (2000 quatloos on Ingemar.) We do get a little gratuitous Pelle shirt changing the next morning (which Dani notices and quickly looks away from), and that’s important, but not as a hint that Pelle killed Josh. To begin with, there’s a bunch of reasons Pelle is unlikely to have killed Josh, not least of which our theory about why he isn’t sacrificed at the end: a) We see Pelle in bed when Josh sneaks out, b) even assuming there’s a secret door, Pelle really would have had to book it to get in there behind Josh and we see Josh make it to the temple without any indication of being followed, and c) assuming Pelle was involved in murdering or butchering Josh, we think he probably would have brought a spare shirt. Come on. He did the cake thing.
Pelle changing his shirt is not just eye candy/misdirection though. It’s actually a clever direction from Ari. If you notice, from this point until the Fire Temple ceremony, Pelle is wearing a different shirt with a different rune, Wunjo in black thread, NOT Fehu in blue. We will get more into this in Post Twelve, but Wunjo (”joy”) is an incredibly positive rune that represents everything we know Dani craves: joy, perfection, harmony, overcoming alienation, kinship and family. It literally describes positive, healthy wishes coming true. Pelle wearing this rune on the day Dani wins the dance competition and he kisses her is incredibly significant and indicates not just his intentions, but it shades the meanings of Dani’s runes as well. He is practically wearing a nametag that says, Hi, my name is Dani’s True Love.
At breakfast, Christian is icy about Josh, butthurt that Josh isn’t letting him steal his thesis with good humor, and Elder Sten announces the Rubi Radr is missing. Pelle, as usual, sneaks a look at Dani, presumably to see whether she’s buying it. The real Pelle/Dani content comes afterward, when Sten and Arne question them about Josh and Mark’s whereabouts and make insinuations about the missing Rubi Radr. (Everyone just step back and consider for a second this is all really for Dani’s benefit. While Christian's [sort of] consent clearly is important, they could have drugged him and gotten what they wanted from him at any point here. Dani is the one they want for keeps, and all these elaborate ruses only further isolate Dani from Christian and cushion her absorption into the family.) Everybody just...sort of assumes Mark is snuggling Inga still, I guess, but Christian cannot sell out Josh fast enough, and Dani and Pelle both look at him with undisguised revulsion. Meanwhile, Pelle does take responsibility for his missing friends and the missing holy text, and thus Odd magically appears (Pelle might be fidgeting his fingers or he might be affekting a secret message to Arne during this scene, too) and he’s given leave to go...look for them. [shifty eyes]
It’s much like the birthday plot. Pelle gives Christian an opportunity to basically be himself, which makes Pelle doing the right thing, even something as simple and baseline human as not immediately forsaking your friend, a total repudiation.
Speaking of Christian being himself, while we don't believe Pelle killed anyone, he's laser focused on helping Christian get himself sacrificed. He takes every chance to stoke Christian’s most selfish impulses from his very first line, and more than that, he really seems to enjoy Christian’s fall. Again, Ari Aster doesn’t make many things in this film simple and plain, but Pelle’s delight in Christian’s corruption is one of those things. We already talked about the smirking in the Director’s Cut version of the car scene and the birthday setup, but once the plots start spinning, we get so much more.
First, Pelle encourages Christian to think of Maja sexually by teasing him about her “taking a liking” to him and informing him she is of the age of consent. His affect is so permissive and tempting, as though Dani doesn't exist and Pelle is only being his wingman, and when Christian replies "Good for her" a little too grumpily, we know Pelle's aim was true. Pelle visibly savors Christian’s predicament. And he's aware of every bit of the spellcasting on Maja's end. When Christian eats and drinks the pie and beverage with (ahem) a little love story added by Maja, Pelle restrains a smile and a laugh. (This is the same lunch scene where Dani snipes at Christian, so he must have been high-fiving Ingemar behind the chicken coop afterward.) Later, Pelle smirks and watches from the corner of his eye as Ulla tempts Christian with special tea during the dance competition. This scene is particularly loaded in the Director's Cut, where Siv has made it explicit to Christian that Pelle showed Maja his picture prior to their arrival in Hårga. Yet when Christian takes a seat next to Pelle, he says nothing, knowing everything, and neither does Pelle. The masks are all but off. Christian knows what he’s going to do, and he’s ashamed; Pelle knows what Christian is going to do, and he’s triumphant.
And most sexily damningly, when Christian succumbs to a nice puff of paralysis powder courtesy of Father Odd, we see (and Christian sees) Pelle peep in through the chicken coop door. In the script, Pelle is described as looking away in shame, but that’s definitely not the Pelle we have on film. Film Pelle is HERE FOR IT. Film Pelle is gloating. And we think he really wants Christian to know it was him in the end, not out in front, but behind the scenes. While one could look at all of this as a refutation of Vilhelm Blomgren’s emphasis in interviews that Pelle is full of love or proof positive that Pelle is actually a (gasp) villain, consider that, flashes of annoyance at Mark aside, he doesn’t show that kind of animosity toward the others. Mark is willfully ignorant and gross; Josh is disrespectful in the sense that he wants to mine Hårga for his own gratification and ambition. But Christian is the only one he clearly delights in destroying, and that destruction is consonant with his love. Because of Dani. Soft, love-filled Hårgan boy loves Dani enough to hate someone for her sake, and that is a fucked-up wish fulfillment fantasy, make no mistake, but...it is still a very valid and common and powerful wish-fulfillment fantasy. That chicken coop smirk is, at its core, just as much an act of love as the birthday sketch. Dani is one of his family. He will lure his friends to their deaths for all of them, but he will scheme Christian to death just for her.
What? Just because it’s unhealthy doesn’t make it less true.
