ICAN Celebrates Landmark Decision in SEC v. Jarkesy:
Tumblr media
ICAN Celebrates Landmark Decision in SEC v. Jarkesy groundbreaking victory for the rights of small market participants and entrepreneurs, the Supreme Court has ruled in favor of George Jarkesy, affirming the fundamental right to a jury trial in SEC fraud proceedings seeking civil penalties. The Investor Choice Advocates Network (ICAN), a nonprofit organization committed to championing the rights of investors, hailed this landmark decision as a significant step toward ensuring due process and fairness in the capital markets. Download the URBT News App from your App store. Apple / Andriod ICAN, which submitted an amicus brief in support of Jarkesy, was joined by prominent figures such as Mark Cuban and Elon Musk. These high-profile entrepreneurs, along with individuals like Manouch Moshayedi, Joseph Collins, and Philip Goldstein, who have faced their own battles with the SEC, added considerable weight to ICAN’s brief. Their involvement helped highlight the unconstitutional practices of the SEC that have disproportionately impacted small business owners and investors. For years, the SEC has utilized its in-house administrative judges to adjudicate fraud cases, boasting a near 100% win rate. This system has often left small market participants and entrepreneurs at a severe disadvantage, unable to endure the lengthy and costly litigation process required to challenge the SEC’s rulings. With this Supreme Court decision, individuals like Jarkesy have ensured that all market participants are granted the fundamental right to an impartial jury trial. ICAN Celebrates Landmark Decision in SEC v. Jarkesy Nick Morgan, President and founder of ICAN, expressed his satisfaction with the decision, stating, "We should all have a strong interest in the rights of all market participants to due process, including access to federal court juries. Small investors and entrepreneurs, a vital engine of the American economy, will avoid our capital markets if they believe the SEC will deprive them of due process." The decision underscores that due process is a cornerstone of the American legal system. It is essential for maintaining trust and fairness in the capital markets. It is also a powerful reminder of the importance of protecting individual rights against arbitrary and inconsistent governmental actions. ICAN remains steadfast in its mission to advocate for the rights of investors and market participants. The organization promotes transparency and ensures that the principles of due process are upheld in all regulatory proceedings. ICAN aims to foster a fair and equitable environment where small investors and entrepreneurs can thrive. (Read Story: U.S. Supreme Court’s Decision in SEC v. Jarkesy: Implications for SEC vs Punch TV Studios) This ruling marks a pivotal moment for small market participants and entrepreneurs across the nation. It serves as a point of hope for those subjected to the SEC’s heavy-handed tactics and offers a renewed sense of confidence in the American legal system. Learn more about ICAN ICAN continues to be a leading voice in the fight for investor rights. Through its tireless efforts, the organization ensures that all market participants, regardless of size or influence, receive fair and respectful treatment. The Supreme Court’s decision in SEC v. Gen 3 - Couples
Here are the ‘main’ and ‘side; characters for gen 3 that we’ll be seeing various amounts of. I’ve updated the gen 3 couples info page so everything should be correct at this point, but I will try and keep it updated often. Head to the aforementioned information page for more links to the wedding links and some of the couples’ love stories to get more context on the couples.
This is going to go in chronological order since that’s the sequence I’ve defaulted to for this gen’s lists 😂This post is definitely a loooong one, so get ready to read  😂
[1] Mason & Adalynn Leonard
Tumblr media
Adalynn (32) married Mason (33) when she was 20 and he was 21; they’ve been married for 12 years and have 7 children together.
They met at Family Bible Camp and courted for 8 months. They were both the first (and oldest) sibling to get married and shared their first kiss at the altar.
They live in Willowcreek, where Mason works for his father’s business and is also an assistant Pastor at his father’s church - Willowcreek Baptist. Adalynn is a stay at home mother who cares for the house and homeschools their children.
They’re labelled (in my lists) as Quiverfull Fundamentalists as they’ve decided to leave the amount of children they have up to God - as a result they have 7 children: Noah (9), Luke (7), Aaron (6), Paul (4), Joshua (2), and twins Caleb, and Jonah are newborns.
They are labelled as one of my heirs for this gen - so you’ll be hearing from Adalynn a lot.
Tumblr media
Here’s their family: Mason is holding Caleb, Adalynn is holding Joshua, then from L-R it’s Noah, Luke, Aaron in the middle, and Paul and Joshua at the front.
[2] Eric and Valentina Townsend
Tumblr media
Valentina (28) married Eric (31) when she was 20 and he was 23. They’ve been married for 8 years and have 4 children together.
They met after Valentina’s mother and aunt Danielle did some matchmaking and introduced them, they courted for almost 6 months before getting married. They too shared their first kiss at the altar.
They live in Brindleton Bay. Eric works as a freelance Computer Programmer, but considers fatherhood is top priority and Valentina cares for house and home, while working on her music career in her spare time.
They’re labelled as non-quiverfull fundamentalists, after the birth of their first child they chose to control the amount of children they have, and as a result they have 4 children: Aria (7), Ansel (6), and twins Asher (1) and Abbott (1). They also subscribe to fundamentalist beliefs, but don’t implement things that they feel wouldn’t work with their family.
They’re Level 2 as theyre still fundamentalists, and because Valentina’s mother Claire was the most quiverfull Collins female from gen 2.
Tumblr media
L-R: Aria (7), Valentina (28), Abott (1), Asher (1), Eric (31), and Ansel (6)
[3] Barrett & Kyleigh Collins
Tumblr media
Barrett (31) married Kyleigh (29) when he was 23 and she was 21. They’ve been married for 8 years and have 8 children together.
They also met at Family Bible Camp, they courted for 3 months before marrying, and saved their first kiss for the altar.
They live in Newcrest, Barrett is a mechanic and has now started preaching at his family’s church, Newcrest Baptist. Kyleigh stays home and homeschools their children while caring for the home.
These two are labelled as quiverfull fundamentalists, and left the number of children they have up to God which had led to 8 children: triplets Chloe (8), Allan Jr (8), and Benjamin (8), twins Rose (6), and Violet (6), Daisy (4), Marigold (2), and Olivia (1)
These are also my heirs, so there should be more posts on them as time goes on.
Tumblr media
L-R: Allan Jr (8), Violet (6) (at the back), Rose (6) (sat down), Olivia (1), Barrett (31), Marigold (2), Kyleigh (29), Benjamin (8) (at the back), Daisy (4), and Chloe (8)
[4] Carter and Madelynn Paulson
Tumblr media
Carter (30) married Madelynn (27) when he was 24 and she was 21. They’ve been married for 6 years and have 2 children together.
They met at Family Bible Camp and they courted for almost a year before getting married, they too saved their first kiss for the altar.
They live in Willowcreek, Carter is a police officer at Willowcreek Police Department whilst Madelynn cares for house and home whilst also working with several women’s charities in her spare time whilst their son is at the homeschool co-op.
They’re labelled as non-quiverfull fundamentalists, they’re already open about having a limit on the amount of children they’ll have, and so far they have 2 boys: Lester Jr (6) and Fitzwilliam (newborn) (not sure whether I should spoil the final number or not 👀) but they’re still fundie enough to go to camp. They are picky about what they choose to follow in terms of fundamentalist beliefs however.
These two are essentially what has become level 3 - not heir status, but because they’re still mostly fundie you’ll be seeing more of them than some of Carter’s siblings.
Tumblr media
Carter and Madelynn’s family
[5] Shane and Maggie Wright
Tumblr media
Maggie (25) married Shane (26) when she was 18 and he was 19. They’ve been married for 7 years and Maggie is pregnant with twins! (AN: this was a surprise to me too 😂)
They met when Maggie travelled into San Myshuno with a group from her home church to assist a group from his church with a local political campaign for the conservative candidate. They courted for almost a year before marrying - her being 17 and him being 18 at the time, Maggie’s parents wanted her to take it ‘slower’ than her older siblings. They too saved their first kiss for marriage.
They live in the city, Shane works for a graphic design company and Maggie is a fashion photographer and a social media influencer - she’s a following of over 30 thousand followers on Simstagram that grows daily.
These two are labelled as Conservative Christians. Maggie has fully broken away from the way she was raised and lives a secular (but still bigoted 🤡) life with her husband. They waited until they were a bit older to have children, and are now expecting twins!
These two are Level 2 - They’re the breakaways from the heir group, so having their story would be good for variety.
Tumblr media
 [6] Reece and Stacie Collins
Tumblr media
Reece (24) married Stacie (24) when they were both 18 years old, they’ve been married for 6 years and have 1 child with one more on the way!
They first met at a conference in Stacie’s native Windenburg, they started courting when they were both 17 and married soon after they turned 18. They had a no touch courtship and engagement, and saved their first kiss for marriage.
They live in San Myshuno. Reece is a freelance software programmer and works with various churches and organisations, Stacie was also a freelance programmer prior to them having children, now she stays at home with their son.
These two are labelled non-quiverfull fundie lite. They both wanted to set their own rules for what they believed after marriage; initially both were open to leaving the number of children they had up to God, but when they found out about Stacie’s troubles surrounding pregnancy, they decided that they’d be selective with how many children they had. They now have one son, Liam (3) and another baby on the way.
These are Level 2 - they’re part of my heir family and are some of my favourites, so we’ll be seeing a lot of them.
Tumblr media
Here they are with their son Liam - soon they’ll be a family of 4!
[7] Colton and Brittany Dahlmann
Tumblr media
Brittany (29) married Colton (31) when she was 24 and he was 26. They’ve been married for 5 years and have 1 child together.
They initially met and became friends at university, they then reconnected when Brittany visited Colton’s father’s political offices for an interview. They dated for a year before Colton proposed at a charity benefit they both organised. These two did not save their first kiss for the altar (but don’t tell Brittany’s parents that 💀)
They live in Windenburg on the Dahlmann family estate. Colton works at his father’s political offices and is planning on launching his own campaign, while Brittany stays home with their daughter, during campaign season she’s at the offices helping with media strategies.
These two fall under the Conservative Christian label. They’re both secular enough to fit in the world, but conservative enough to be on the conservative political scene as up and coming players. These two definitely have a set amount of children - optics are everything nowadays.
These two are level 3 - they’ll have a few storylines now and again, but we’ll mostly ‘hear’ of them rather than see them.
Tumblr media
Here’s Colton and Brittany with their daughter Nicole (4)
They’ve also got an announcement to make!
Tumblr media
Soon they’ll be a family of 4! (AN: had to throw this in because this post took so long)
[8] Tanner and Tabitha Collins
Tumblr media
Tanner (25) married Tabitha (20) when he was 24 and she was 19, they’ve been married for a year and have 1 child together.
They met at Tabitha’s home church in Willowcreek, they courted for 6 months before getting married. They were married in a double wedding along with Tabitha’s twin sister and her husband Alan (who is also Tanner’s cousin), both couples saved their first kiss for marriage.
They live in Willowcreek. Tanner works at Willowcreek General Hospital doing his residency in the Obstetrics/Gynaecology unit, Tabitha stays home with their baby.
These two are quiverfull fundamentalists. They’re open to the amount of children that God feels necessary to bless them with, they currently have one child, a newborn son they named Tanner Jr.
These two are level 2.5/ level 3 - They’re fundie as hell, so they’ll most likely appear in conjunction with other fundies, but we’re not going to focus on them as much.
Tumblr media
Here they are with their son TJ
[9] Francisco and Zoe Moreno
Tumblr media
Zoe (29) married Francisco (33) when she was 27 and he was 31, they’ve been married for 2 years and have 1 child together.
They met when Francisco moved to Newcrest and started attending the Collinses church, there he met Zoe whilst she was singing with the choir. They courted for 9 months before getting married, they saved their first kiss for the altar.
They currently live in Oasis Springs, Francisco is deployed to a military base in the desert but is allowed to live off-base due to being married. Zoe stays home and takes care of their son, while also working on her music.
These two are labelled non-quiverfull fundie lite. They both wanted to set their own rules for what they believed after marriage, and due to them constantly moving because of Francisco’s job, they’re more careful with how often they have children. They currently have one son, a 1 year old boy named Javier Jr (JJ).
These are Level 2 - they’re part of the heir family, so they’ll be references to them a lot.
Tumblr media
Here they are with their son JJ.
[10] Beckett and Mandy Collins
Tumblr media
Beckett (23) married mandy (20) when he was 21 and she was 18, they’ve been married for 2 years now.
They met when Mandy moved to Newcrest to be a mothers helper and joined the Collinses church, they courted for 6 months before marrying and they saved their first kiss for marriage.
They live in Selvadorada, they moved to serve in the mission field soon after they married. Beckett is the pastor of a church that they’ve set up there, and Mandy’s role is that of the Pastor’s wife.
These two are labelled as quiverfull fundamentalists and have left the number of children they have up to God. They currently have no children due to unexplained infertility, but are praying for whatever God wants for them.
These two are Level 3 - Their location means you’ll get updates every holiday season.
[11]  Alan and Tessa Paulson
Tumblr media
Alan (27) married Tessa (20) when he was 26 and she was 19, they’ve been married for 1 year and have 1 child together.
They met at Tessa’s home church in Willowcreek when Alan’s cousin Tanner started courting Tessa’s twin sister. They courted for 5 months before marrying in a double wedding, they also saved their first kiss for their wedding.
They live in San Myshuno, Alan works for a Christian Media company as a critic and Tessa stays home with their child.
These two are quiverfull fundamentalists. They’re open to the amount of children that God feels necessary to bless them with, they currently have one child, a newborn son they named Charity.
These two are level 2.5/ level 3 - They’re fundie as hell, so they’ll most likely appear in conjunction with other fundies, but we’re not going to focus on them as much.
Tumblr media
Here they are with their daughter Charity (AN: i love that both babies got the redhead gene 😂)
[12] Gregory and Kristyn Crocker
Tumblr media
Kristyn (24) and Gregory (27) have been married for 10 months and are expecting their first child together
Their families have known each other through various conferences over the years, so he approached Kristyn’s parents about courting her. They courted for 7 months before getting married, and saved their first kiss for the altar.
They live in Oasis Springs, Gregory works for the faculty at the same Bible university that his father is the Dean of, and Kristyn stays at home. In her spare time she volunteers with the children’s ministry of their church.
These two are non-quiverfull fundamentalists. Gregory’s family aren’t quiverfull, so he didn’t feel it necessary to adopt that in his family, Kristyn is currently pregnant with their first child.
These two are Level 3 - They’re not that important, so they’ll probably reappearin recaps.
Tumblr media
Their growing family!
[13] Felix and Priscilla Roberts
Tumblr media
Priscilla (20) and Felix (25) have been married for 2 months
They initially met at Felix’s sister Madelynn’s wedding but started courting after meeting again at a conference. They courted for 8 months before marrying - they saved their first kiss for the altar.
They live in Oasis Springs in the Roberts household with Felix’s parents, Felix works as a lawyer for his father’s law offices whilst Priscilla helps his mother with the families charities.
These two are labelled non-quiverfull (sort of) fundie lite. They lean more fundamentalist than the rest but can still be labelled as fundie lite.
These are Level 2.5 - Priscilla comes from the heir family so they’ll be referenced a lot and will be seen in updates.
[14]  Thomas Eichelburg and Amira Collins
Tumblr media
Amira (22) and Thomas (23) are recently engaged to be married
They met when Amira was in Thomas’ native Windenburg fora conference with her family, they’ve been together for around 10 months.
[15] Adam Hill and Abbey Collins
Tumblr media
Abbey Collins (28) and Adam Hill (29) are engaged to be married
They met at a conference for their jobs as marine biologists and have been together for 2 years.
[16] Tucker Crawford and Sabrina Paulson
Tumblr media
Sabrina (24) and Tucker (25) have been courting for 2 months
The couple started courting at Family Camp this summer after being friends for a while
And THAT is the end of the gen 3 couple intros, what should’ve taken 3 days has taken 2 weeks because university work ramped up and i underestimated just how much information would be covered 😂 The next post will cover the gen 3 singles/children, which should be a much shorter post.

Sam & Dave were the most successful and critically acclaimed duo in soul music history, according to Rolling Stone magazine, and brought the sounds of the black gospel church to pop music with their string of call-and-response hit records. Primarily recorded at Stax Records in Memphis, Tennessee, from 1965 through 1968, these songs included "Soul Man", "Hold On, I'm Coming", "I Thank You", and other Southern soul classics. Other than Aretha Franklin, no other soul act during Sam & Dave's hitmaking Stax years (1966–1968) had more consistent R&B chart success, which included 10 consecutive top 20 singles and 3 consecutive top 10 LPs. "Soul Man" has been recognized as one of the best or most influential songs of the past 50 years by many organizations, including the Grammy Hall of Fame, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Rolling Stone Magazine, and RIAA Songs of the Century. "Soul Man" was used as the soundtrack and title for both a 1986 film and a 1997–1998 television series.
Nicknamed "Double Dynamite" for their energetic and sweaty, gospel-infused performances, Sam & Dave were also considered by critics to be one of the greatest live performing acts of the 1960s. The duo has been cited as a musical influence by numerous artists, including Bruce Springsteen, Michael Jackson, Phil Collins, and Stevie Winwood. The Blues Brothers, which helped create a major resurgence of popular interest in soul, R&B, and blues music in the 1980s, was heavily influenced by Sam & Dave; their biggest hit was their top 20 cover of "Soul Man", and their act and stage show was patterned after Sam & Dave's.
Early years (1958–1964)
The seventh of ten children, Prater was born in Ocilla, Georgia, where he grew up singing gospel music in the church choir, and was a veteran of the gospel group the Sensational Hummingbirds, in which he sang with his older brother, J. T. Prater. Dave Prater met his future partner, Sam Moore, in the King of Hearts Club in Miami in 1961, signing to Roulette Records shortly thereafter. Sam & Dave released six singles for Roulette, including two songs that Prater co-wrote with Moore. Prater was typically featured as the lead vocalist on these records, with Moore typically singing harmony and alternate verses.
Stax years (1965–1968)
They were signed in late 1964 by Jerry Wexler to Atlantic Records, with an agreement that allowed them to record in Memphis with Stax Records. Their first two singles failed to chart, but the duo's November 1965 single, "You Don't Know Like I Know," started a series of ten straight top twenty Billboard R&B hits, including "Hold On, I'm Comin'" (1966), "You Got Me Hummin'" (1966), "When Something Is Wrong with My Baby" (1967), "Soul Man" (1967), and "I Thank You" (1968). Starting with "Hold On, I'm Comin'", Moore was typically given the lead vocal (first verse and lead voice in chorus) on most of their recordings. Prater sang the tenor lead first verse on their only ballad to become a hit single, "When Something Is Wrong with My Baby", demonstrating an impressive vocal range in the upper register.
All of their biggest hits were written and produced by Isaac Hayes and David Porter, who worked as songwriters for Stax. Sam & Dave's Stax records also benefited greatly from the backing of the Stax house band, Booker T. & the M.G.'s, and the Stax horn section, the Mar-Keys. These highly regarded musicians co-wrote (often without credit) and contributed greatly to the recordings. Sam & Dave's Stax recordings through 1967 were engineered by Stax founder and co-owner Jim Stewart, who created the "Memphis sound" at Stax by recording sessions essentially live in a single take. The combination of all of these respected talents contributed to the unique sound and commercial success of Sam & Dave's Stax recordings.
Atlantic years, solo career, and back with Sam and Dave (1968–1981)
Stax and Atlantic severed their distribution agreement in 1968, and as a result Sam & Dave became Atlantic recording artists and were no longer able to work with Hayes, Porter and the Stax musicians. The records made by Atlantic did not have the same sound and feel as the Stax recordings, and most only placed in the lower ends of the music charts if at all. The ending of their association with the Stax record label and their frequently volatile relationship contributed to the break-up of the duo in June 1970.
After the break-up with Sam, Prater went back to their early Miami label, Alston Records, where he recorded one single, "Keep My Fingers Crossed" backed with "Love Business" (Alston A-4596), and also performed sporadically over the next year.
Sam & Dave reunited in August 1971 and performed throughout most of the decade through 1981. They enjoyed a brief resurgence in popularity due to the Blues Brothers's 1979 recording of "Soul Man". Sam & Dave also recorded "Come On, Come Over", which appeared on the debut LP of jazz bassist Jaco Pastorius. Dave also appeared in the Paul Simon movie One Trick Pony as part of Sam & Dave. Their last performance together was on December 31, 1981, at the Old Waldorf in San Francisco.
The New Sam and Dave Revue (1982–1988)
In 1982, Prater started touring with Sam Daniels. This duo was also billed as Sam & Dave. They performed together until Prater's death in 1988. Moore attempted to legally block Prater from using the group's name without his participation and permission, but was generally unsuccessful in stopping the act from performing. The Daniels–Prater incarnation of Sam & Dave played as many as 100 shows per year, including gigs in Europe, Japan and Canada.
In 1985, Prater and Daniels released a medley of Sam & Dave hits newly recorded in the Netherlands, which peaked at number 92 on the R&B chart and was credited to "Sam & Dave". Moore made the label recall the single for using the "Sam & Dave" name without permission, and the record was relabelled and reissued under the name of "The New Sam & Dave Revue".
Prater's last performance with Daniels was on April 3, 1988, at a Stax Reunion show at the Atlanta Civic Center, which also featured Isaac Hayes, Eddie Floyd, and Rufus and Carla Thomas. Six days later, on April 9, 1988, Prater died in a car crash in Sycamore, Georgia, while driving to his mother's house.
Prater summed up his thoughts on his career for Gerri Hirshey, who quoted him in her book Nowhere to Run (1984, Southbank Publishing):
I'm a workin' man. Been gettin' down so long. I don't be thinkin' about will I make it up again. Now, what's a music man like me gonna do? What's he do, 'less he entertains till he dies?
Personal life
Prater was married to Annie Belle Henderson from March 1962 to November 1969 and had five children with her. During a domestic dispute in 1968, Prater shot and injured his wife. He was not charged for the incident. On December 25, 1969, he married his second wife, Judith T. Gilbert, and remained married to her until his death. Prater was a resident of Paterson, New Jersey, from 1974 until his death in a single-car accident in Sycamore, Georgia, on April 9, 1988. He was buried in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Totowa, New Jersey.

Director Frustration #3 - Have I Hit the Ceiling As a CEO?
A few CEOs and affiliations, are in a general sense better than most at making results. What have they gets it? Likely, they have fathoms how to address four key dissatisfactions, any of which is set okay with avoiding the sound judgment of the CEO and right now collusion:
My official get-together isn't performing.
We need essential execution.
Our business results are not incredible.
Have I Hit the Ceiling as a CEO?
These four issues can make CEOs completely crazy. Why? Since the CEO is the individual by and large affected by the signs of these issues; yet, the CEO is the standard individual with the vested situation to reveal the upgrades required to move the relationship past each challenge. Duty lies truly on the work region of the CEO. In case these four frustrations are tended to effectively, CEOs will most likely watch two pleasing outcomes: (1) improvement in the conceded results of their affiliations, and (2) widened particular satisfaction in their occupations brent saunders .
This article pivots around the rest of these four disappointments.
President FRUSTRATION #4: HAVE I HIT THE CEILING AS A CEO?
Anyway more valuable than various leveled in nature, this misunderstanding has genuine impact on the results an affiliation can make. Every official "beat out" at some point or another, including the CEO. From time to time, the association ceaselessly makes past the most remote purpose of the CEO. Various events, the CEO basically needs to learn new points of confinement and expansion additional comprehension to make with the connection. The two conditions are proportionally trying.
If you fight with this foul up, it obviously shows itself as one of the going with:
Feeling that you have hit your own limit as a CEO and pioneer.
Having an inclination that you are swimming in water over your head.
Pondering whether you have the right style or character to be the CEO.
The Owner correspondingly as Founder should be CEO, isn't that so?
Feeling That You Have Hit Your Personal Limit as a CEO and Leader
Everybody has depictions of vulnerability concerning their ability to beat needs in given jobs and assignments. Chief are no novel case. Truth be told, CEOs are obviously reasonably exhibited to such demands in setting on the astounding load of offers put upon them. They feel steady strain to have all the fitting reactions, fix what's happening, and produce cash related results in a through and through confirmed and quickly changing business part condition.
In like manner, the CEO is a guaranteed model for the entire association. Scott McNealy, prime supporter and past CEO of Sun Microsystems, starting late commented that when you join high-paid, especially unquestionable spots of power, you have to live "past yourself." near the day's end, you should display capacity to set aside explicit requirements, focuses, and inclinations, acting so to talk character and reasonableness - steadily. Not so much at work, before delegates, at any rate every single see of every single day, out in the open and in private.
These are uncommonly wonderful necessities. Thusly, it ought not amaze anybody that various CEOs wonder if they have hit their own most unavailable point. "Am I purged to complete this commitment?" "Should I be at the present time?" have likely asked yourself these sales.
Having a penchant that You Are Swimming in Water Over Your Head
The offers of a CEO position can be covering. Overwhelmed CEOs may figure they don't have the right gadgets to complete their commitment, regardless a remarkable bit of the time, they basically need to all the essentially certain hold what their development should be.
All CEOs - whether or not they be the business visionaries who started their affiliations or managers who rose through the positions - have gone to their position having encompassed a specific degree of points of confinement. The normal penchant is to keep doing whatever made them advantageous in past assignments, at any rate the activity of CEO isn't really equivalent to various occupations.
Do you ever consider about your activity as CEO? Do you ever expand that you don't have the right gadgets to fill the development suitably? Do you don't have the experience or express aptitudes required for your activity? These are just a couple of occasions of contemplations that produce the unimaginably hostile doubt of doing combating to keep your head above water.
Considering Whether You Have the Right Style or Personality to Be CEO
This is a normal mental catch for CEOs who are feeling overwhelmed by the task before them. Feeding this acknowledgment further is the anticipated media stream of star CEOs and masters. They everything considered have all the stores of being on a very basic level picked, mind blowing, striking, inhumane, and charming individuals, and fulfilling their "model" is acceptable to drive any CEO to ludicrous degrees of self-question. "If what those people state and do are what's required to be beneficial," you may state to yourself, "by then I'm in a tough situation."
You ought to urge yourself to review that there is no single "right" style required to be a profitable CEO. Reason for truth, style and character add to if all else fails accomplishment, yet they are by all record by all record by all record by all account not the only parts or even the most tremendous ones.
The Owner likewise as Founder Should Be CEO, Right?
Being a connection's owner or coordinator doesn't conventionally qualify someone to be CEO. The capacities with respect to a convincing CEO depend upon express aptitudes and experiences - none of which are required to start or have a business.
Ownership is only a fiscal purpose of repression, regardless the limits concerning ownership and authority now and again exist in an equivalent individual at the levels basic for a little or new business. As a union makes, notwithstanding, the principal originator may see he is unfit as CEO.
Reasonably barely any specialists make it from start-up to Fortune 500 CEO. Michael Dell, Bill Gates, Scott McNealy and Steve Jobs have done it, yet even they have adjusted their different occupations as their affiliations made and changed. For quite a while, Michael Dell introduced activity responsibilities to Kevin Rollins; Bill Gates has moved from driving Microsoft's standard exercises to a continuously essential degree a headway visionary occupation; and Steve Jobs was moved out of Apple years sooner before additional starting late being brought again into the affiliation.
The best methodology to HELP THIS ISSUE GET BETTER
Apparently, self-question is one of the most generally observed bothers for CEOs of making affiliations. We was unable to envision anything superior to offer a searing and direct strategy, yet it doesn't exist. Beating self-weakness and seeing how to be a convincing CEO requires a raised degree of requesting, and that puts aside some push to make. You have to constantly set aside the exuberant offers of the business and put time in working up your own abilities and requesting. The going with rules may be valuable to you in dealing with this mistake.
1. Develop the Habit of Continuous Learning
In his article, "Why Entrepreneurs Don't Scale," John Hamm notes four reasons why experts fight to lead their relationship as they make in size and multifaceted nature:
Silly duty to partners
Undertaking heading
Resolve
Working in withdrawal
These reasons is instructive, and we interface with you read the entire article. Near with our present discussion, notwithstanding, note that none of them are extremely dependent upon establishment, utmost, or farthest point.
Or on the other hand maybe, Hamm says the representatives who scale adequately make cognizant walks while in travel to go up against their own insufficiencies. The route in to this is when in doubt constantly open to learning.
2. Augmentation capacity with the Right Disciplines
As you handle steady learning, start with made by Jim Collins, Patrick Lencioni, and Verne Harnish, each and every clear master who demonstrate the enormous controls fundamental for any CEO to be productive. These requesting should what's more be advised and persistently strengthened to your official get-together. Models include:
Engage a couple of key exercises over the association as opposed to reliably influencing start with one advancement then onto the going with.
Set two or three clear needs.
Impact a "to stop doing" list.
Creation a culture of trust that engages better task.
Development capacity with the right requesting to present.
Develop the tendency for addressing a more observable number of sales than you offer reactions.
Regardless of these authorities, Peter Drucker is a stupendous wellspring of business and activity information. We insistently demand that you analyze (and re-read a critical piece of the time) his article entitled "What Makes an Effective Executive."
3. Make Building a Strong Executive Team Your First Habit
This is the rule request in The Four Obsessions of An Extraordinary Executive by Patrick Lencioni, and our experience drives us to agree this is the focal solicitation that a CEO should learn. The concealed improvement is finding the fortunate people for the authority get-together, and the consequent headway is getting them to arrange reasonably. Acing this requesting:
spreads the responsibility with respect to results among a progressively noticeable get-together. The CEO must have help to adequately achieve required results.
produces a model of requesting for the entire coalition.

Are The Pop Songs In ‘A Star Is Born’ Supposed To Be Unhealthy? One Of
British pop music is widespread music, produced commercially in the United Kingdom It emerged in the mid-to late Fifties as a softer alternative to rock 'n' roll and later to rock music. ^ Collins, pg. 11 As well as, Collins notes that early pseudo-country musicians like Vernon Dalhart who had made their title recording 'country music songs' weren't from the hills and hollows or isispurton30.wikidot.com plains and valleys. These recording stars sang each rural music and city music, and most knew extra about Broadway than they did about hillbillies. Their rural image was usually manufactured for the second and the dollar. In contrast, http://www.magicaudiotools.com/ Collins later explains, each the Carter Family and Rodgers had rural folk credibility that helped make Peer's recording session such an influential success; it was the Carter Family that was Ralk Peer's tie to the hills and hollows, to lost loves and found faith, however it took Jimmie Rodgers to connect the publisher with some of nation music's different beloved symbols—trains and saloons, jail and the blues. It may be argued that the difference between World and Folk music is difficult, harboring a fair quantity of overlapping. In essence, World music is contemporary music carried out and created all all over the world, however falling simply short in affect to develop into well-liked music, for instance RaÏ, Afrobeat and Highlife. Nonetheless, these world music genres are sometimes evolutions of much older geographically linked Folks music. In different words: World music is usually the modern evolution of historical People music. What is especially fascinating about rockabilly is that it has spurred its own group of subgenres that take the -abilly" combining kind They are mainly styles of rock music that are heavily influenced by 1970s punk rock, together with the aptly named punkabilly: a mix of punk rock" and rockabilly"; psychobilly, a mix of psycho" and rockabilly" that provides heavy metallic and blues to its influences, often features an upright double bass in accompaniment, and contains imagery-laden lyrical content usually perceived as being of a taboo nature; and gothabilly, which has similarities in style to psychobilly but adds a moodier, gothic musical tone. There seems to be no ebbing of the emergence of even more rockabilly subgenres. Exhausting rock-influenced thrashabilly and trashabilly, as well as surfabilly, which blends rockabilly with parts of laidback surf music , have all continued to grow in recognition. Often thought-about essentially the most formal and restrictive of all genres of singing, classical and opera singing actually require the greatest quantity of freedom. A lot of it is sung with uncontrolled vibrato and whole emotional release. It's, nonetheless, the least conversational of all genres. As a result of it lacks the intimacy of that conversational high quality with the audience (suppose folks music), it has the tendency to give audiences the impression of admiring a good looking portray from afar. The anti-disco backlash, mixed with different societal and radio business elements, changed the face of pop radio within the years following Disco Demolition Evening. Starting in the Eighties, nation music started a gradual rise in American essential pop charts. Emblematic of country music's rise to mainstream reputation was the commercially successful 1980 movie City Cowboy The continued recognition of power pop and the revival of oldies within the late Seventies was also associated to the disco backlash; the 1978 film Grease was emblematic of this trend. Considerably paradoxically, the star of both films was John Travolta , who in 1977 had starred in Saturday Evening Fever , which stays one of the vital iconic disco movies of the era. Because it seems like through the '70s and '80s, especially with female singers, you do not hear it quite as much as you do in music from the '90s and the 2000s. So we will stay up for studying this more sooner or later and having not solely extra male and female singers included in our research, but additionally music from completely different many years and to see if there is a totally different correlation between whether perhaps people choose the type of expression that was used of the music when they were rising up than possibly something that's extra popular at the moment. Pop rock is a fusion style used to explain customary verse-chorus Pop music that may also be categorized beneath Rock for its use of guitars, drums, and propulsive rhythms. The genre manifested on the tail finish of the 1950s as a extra radio-pleasant different to Rock & Roll and R&B , consisting mainly of white performers similar to Roy Orbison and Del Shannon Over the subsequent decade, pop and rock continued to mix collectively and create new subgenres like Vocal Surf and Beat Music Within the Nineteen Seventies, pop rock turned both rougher ( Power Pop ) and smoother ( Delicate Rock ); within the 1980s-90s, it fused with some Various Rock to make Jangle Pop and Britpop Right this moment, pop rock remains an active, vast-ranging genre with much crossover between other pop kinds. It takes a robust debut tune to knock the Queen of Pop, Taylor Swift, off the highest of the pop charts. And that's what Cardi B did with the historically successful "Bodak Yellow." The swaggering hit marked the first time a feminine rapper scored a solo No. 1 tune since Lauryn Hill in 1998. It makes complete sense, too, as the tune takes Cardi B's no-fucks-given approach to life that made her an Instagram and reality star. If that is not the right encapsulation of common culture in 2017, then I do not know what's. The one-string guitar is also called the Unitar Though rare, the one-string guitar is typically heard, notably in Delta blues , the place improvised folk devices have been in style in the Nineteen Thirties and Forties. Eddie "One String" Jones had some regional success. quotation wanted Mississippi blues musician Lonnie Pitchford played the same, do-it-yourself instrument. In a more modern fashion, Little Willie Joe, the inventor of the Unitar , had a rhythm and blues instrumental hit in the Fifties with "Twitchy", recorded with the Rene Hall Orchestra.

Facebook, Google Face Regulatory Reckoning That May End Big Tech Dominance
— By David H. Freedman | Newsweek | May 04, 2022
Tumblr media
In February, the company formerly known as Facebook lost $232 billion in value in the stock market—the biggest loss ever suffered by a U.S. company in a single day, a plunge equal to the combined market values of Netflix and Fedex. By the end of April, the stock had lost another fifth of its value.
Meta Platforms, as the company is now formally known, can only wish that a brutal stock beating is its only problem. Meta faces serious threats on several fronts, and any one of them might prove existential. For the first time in its 18-year history, the number of people who use the once-ubiquitous-seeming Facebook social network has been dropping. Privacy protections added by Apple last year to its phone software are hobbling Facebook's bread-and-butter ad business, which depends on keeping tabs on what users are up to. And the all-important youth market is shunning Facebook in favor of TikTok.
Meta is also facing a daunting level of ire, which is splashing over onto the rest of Big Tech—that is, Google, Amazon, Apple and Microsoft. These tech giants and Meta are facing scrutiny from regulators and legislators both in the U.S. and Europe. And they are all objects of an intensifying resentment on the part of the public. A sign of the times: A Democratic Congressional candidate in Virginia, Andy Parker, was, until pulling out in mid-April, running almost entirely on a platform of curbing Big Tech's enabling of bad behavior online.
The governments of the U.S. and Europe have essentially decided that they don't want a handful of giant tech companies, accountable to no one but their shareholders, steering the actions of their citizens and shaping our collective worldviews, all in the service of amassing staggering wealth. Legislators and regulators on both sides of the Atlantic are now squaring off against the digital behemoths in what is shaping up to be a modern version of the massive 20th-century antitrust battles with Standard Oil and AT&T.
In late April, the European Union tripled down on its harsh, anti-Big-Tech regulation by passing the Digital Services Act, a suite of laws that would force the giant tech companies to police disinformation, illegal content and misleading advertising far more aggressively than they have in the past. In the U.S., regulators, attorneys general and members of Congress from both sides of the aisle are lining up to take action against Meta for its problems managing privacy, disinformation and censorship, as well as abusive and predatory online behavior.
Perhaps more than anything else, the sheer size, influence and wealth of these companies is raising concerns—and painting bullseyes on their backs. "There's a growing understanding that this concentration of power and enterprise is bad for the rest of us," says Chuck Collins, a senior scholar at the Institute for Policy Studies, a Washington, D.C., progressive think tank. "The pitchforks are coming for them."
If successful, efforts to curb the power of these firms will change the world as we know it. It will either mean reducing our dependence on the digital tools these companies have pioneered and largely offer for free, or open up competition to new tech companies that aren't so quick to invade privacy, transmit disinformation, spray advertising and support our worst behaviors.
The results will reverberate through our lives in ways no one can predict. The free services we have come to depend on to search out information, stay in touch with friends, navigate the streets, get goods zipped to our doorsteps and place everything from banking to ridesharing at our fingertips could become expensive, or less convenient—or might dry up altogether. Or perhaps, as happened with Standard Oil and AT&T, we will enter a golden age of competition that yields more choice, better products and lower costs while respecting privacy. .
Big Tech is facing a reckoning. It won't go down without a fight, but there may be little it can do to stem the backlash.

The Trillion-Dollar Club
Big Tech is raking it in, plain and simple. In 2021, while the world struggled with a surging pandemic, Meta, Google, Amazon, Apple and Microsoft—the Big Tech Five—enjoyed surging revenues. Combined they took in well over $1.2 trillion, the most they've ever made, and close to $200 billion more than in 2020, which was itself a record year.
Even Meta, despite all the battering its reputation and stock are taking, is sitting pretty. Last year it took in $86 billion. The recent drop in daily users is a blip compared to its total of two billion users a day. Its monthly user total, which is the metric more closely watched by advertisers, is still rising. "People are talking about Facebook as if it's about to become the next MySpace or Yahoo," says Daniel Salmon, an analyst who follows Meta for BMO Capital Markets, referring to two once-dominant tech companies that faded away to
insignificance. "But I don't think that's going to happen."
What's more, Meta's efforts to dominate the future of the nascent virtual-reality (VR) "metaverse"—where goggle-wearing users explore, game, learn, shop and meet up in 3-D spaces—are starting to bear fruit. Meta's Quest VR goggles have taken over about half the market; its Quest software store has hit $1 billion in sales since it debuted in 2020; and its online metaverse platform has grown by a factor of 10 over the past three months to 300,000 users.
Meta and the other members of the ultra-elite club of tech titans is gunning hard for even more dominance. They are spending hundreds of billions of dollars to add new facilities, expand product lines and buy smaller companies. These five tech giants alone account for nearly one out every 10 dollars invested by businesses in the U.S.
This success and ambition might be viewed more favorably if a significant portion of the enormous wealth these companies generate was passed along to workers in the form of high wages. But the windfalls tend to enrich a small cadre of investors and tech-savvy knowledge workers in Silicon Valley and Seattle rather than the factory workers churning out iPhones or those laboring in Amazon delivery vans and warehouses. It's no coincidence that the formidable Teamsters union is throwing its weight behind—and gaining ground in—an effort to unionize Amazon workers. On April 1, the Amazon facility in Staten Island, N.Y., became the first whose workers voted to do so. Union organizers say they're looking to increase hourly wages from about $16 to $30.
It might help, too, if the Big Tech Five continued as the bold disruptors of tired industries they once were. But lately they've congealed into what economists call "rent extractors," collecting a virtually assured continuous stream of money by offering only incremental improvements in their products. The iPhone and the Windows operating system once represented meteoric improvements in technology, but the iPhone 13 or Windows 11 are hardly distinguishable from their predecessors.
"The experiences they give us aren't all that great anymore," says Maritza Johnson, who heads the Center for Digital Civil Society at the University of San Diego. "It's harder to get excited about it."
What's becoming easier to get excited about, on the other hand, is how Big Tech—and, in particular, Facebook and Google—have converted what they know about their users into a massive income of advertising dollars. For years users seemed to give these incursions into online privacy little thought, but now concern is growing.
Meta, for instance, has been under fire for tracking what its users click on and see online. The company fields an array of data-gathering tools that reach across the entire web, including phones and other mobile devices. Through a vast network of business partnerships, Meta now receives data from more than eight million websites describing the activities of Facebook users who visit the sites. The sites and apps feeding Facebook's huge appetite for data include Yelp, Duolingo, Indeed and many others.
Although Facebook has seen serious competitors spring up, it acquired two of the biggest and fastest growing: Instagram and WhatsApp. The messaging app WhatsApp rose to popularity around the world in large part because it was considered a beacon of privacy protection, shrouding all its messages with encryption. When Meta bought the app's parent company in 2014, the company said it would keep those privacy protections. Early last year, however, it told WhatsApp users that they either had to consent to being tracked by Facebook, or delete the app. It relented only after millions of users fled the app for independent competitors like Signal. Meta is particularly thorough in gathering data from users of its own websites and apps. For instance, it hangs on to as much as 79 percent of the personal data it sees through its Instagram app, according to an analysis by information-technology-services company PCloud.
It's no secret that Meta uses that data to help advertisers hit up the right users with the right messages, as well as to shape its recommendations for content to look at and groups to join. Apple's 2021 iPhone privacy enhancements, which push users to choose whether they want to allow third parties to track them, put a crimp in Meta's data-gathering abilities. But the company still has a rich stream of information on users flowing in through Android phones and the web. It is also well positioned to turn the metaverse into a new, even larger pipeline of user data, largely because VR goggles like Meta's Quest include cameras that can observe the user's body and surroundings.
Facebook's data collection practices might not seem invasive when couched in anodyne business terms of browsing habits and advertising. But the information it routinely gathers on each one of its users would make a revealing dossier. Data on browsing habits—what web pages people visit, what they click on there, and what they buy—could easily reveal political views, health concerns, eating habits, travel plans and social circles. There's no telling what else clever artificial-intelligence programs could glean from each person's digital habits in the future. Considering that Facebook collects this data on the digital activities of millions of people 24 hours a day, seven days a week, it starts to look like a potential privacy nightmare on a vast scale.
Exactly what data Facebook is enlisting, and in what ways, is very much a secret. "It's so opaque that people don't even know exactly what questions to ask," says the University of San Diego's Johnson. "And if they did, Facebook wouldn't answer, and if Facebook did answer there'd be no way to verify the answer."
As if to underscore the point, Facebook declined to make an executive available for an interview for this article.

Cracking Down
Google, too, collects enormous streams of data about people and shares it with advertisers. Much of it comes from the keywords we type into searches, but it also gathers information about users through the websites they visit and what they click on there, largely thanks to its ownership of the Chrome browser used by two out of three website visitors. Google's voice assistant and home services, such as speakers, security cameras and smoke alarms, provide another source of insight into user behaviors. And Google owns Android, the phone operating system that's on more than twice as many phones as Apple's iOS, offering another major way to know what users are doing. (Google, too, declined to make an executive available for an interview.)
Apple has access to similar sorts of user information through its own hardware, software and services, but now offers protection from third-party tracking by default. Meta and Google both offer users the option to set similar sorts of tracking-protection features, but users typically don't take the trouble or don't have the know-how to find and activate these protections. Also concerning: All three mega-companies have invested heavily in artificial intelligence, which can figure out much more about a person from a given set of data—inferring that someone is likely to have a particular health problem, for example, or a certain sexual preference, based on patterns in online behavior.
The public seems fed up with being tracked by the tech giants. An October survey conducted by the Public Affairs Council and Morning Consult found that Americans rank the tech sector near the bottom of all major business sectors in trustworthiness; only the pharmaceutical, health insurance and energy industries earned less trust. That's a huge shift from just four years ago, when the same poll found that the tech industry was deemed the most trustworthy. Surveys from four or more years ago suggested that many users were once willing to trade off some privacy for the convenience of online services and platforms, but the newer data suggests that deal is looking increasingly unattractive.
Perhaps even more aggravating to many people than the potential privacy violations, at least where Meta is concerned, is the tension between the spread of hateful, predatory and dangerous misinformation and efforts to remove or limit toxic posts and comments. Starting with Facebook's role in promoting election disinformation in 2016, liberal critics lambasted the company for its failure to police its platform against false claims about election fraud, anti-vaccine propaganda and calls for political violence preceding the January 6, 2021, insurrection. But Facebook's business model is crucially dependent on algorithms that promote posts that are likely to appeal to a user—a practice that tends to push the most inflammatory and inaccurate material to the top.
Adding further fuel to the fire, Meta former-employee-turned-whistle-blower Frances Haugen disclosed a trove of damaging inside information about the company's failure to control problematic content in 2021 Congressional testimony. In particular, she revealed that the company had suppressed the findings of its own research showing that Meta-owned Instagram was harming teens' mental health. The revelations made it clear that Meta's own software wasn't merely failing to catch and remove the most dangerous and toxic content, it tended to actively promote it.
"The most polarizing things are the ones being promoted," says Janna Greenberg, a communications researcher at Boston University. "Neo-Nazis had never had a voice before."
Conservatives, on the other hand, have railed against various efforts on the part of Meta, Google and other tech companies to remove election-fraud, anti-vax and other disinformation that tends to resonate with large parts of their followers. "Facebook gets attacked from the left for not taking down enough and from the right for taking down too much," says Rob Atkinson, president of the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation, a nonprofit technology policy think tank in Washington, D.C., that receives some of its funding from technology companies. "It can't win."
But politicians and regulators can win, by catering to the widespread ire against Big Tech with punitive actions. A November Washington Post-Schar School poll found that two in three Americans say the government needs to take action against these companies.
The resulting array of legislation and lawsuits being proposed is breathtaking. The House of Representatives is considering the Justice Against Malicious Algorithms Act along with the Protecting Americans from Dangerous Algorithms Act, either of which would remove the protection known as Section 230, which shields social media companies from liability for what their users post. And the Filter Bubble Transparency Act, introduced by a bipartisan group in the House, with a Senate version submitted by Republicans, would require Meta, Google and other large social-media companies to either get rid of the algorithms that promote content or offer a second version of their network that doesn't enlist the algorithms.
In the Senate, meanwhile, the bipartisan Social Media NUDGE Act would enlist the National Academy of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine and the National Science Foundation to come up with techniques that Meta and other social-media companies would be forced to use to tame harmful content online. And the Senate is also looking at a Kids Internet Design and Safety (KIDS) Act that would require the companies to offer special protection for minors. All of these proposed bills are currently in committee, and while it's difficult to predict when any or all of them might make it to the full chambers, the bipartisan backing they are receiving suggests they all have a good chance of becoming law in some form.
The states are also moving on new laws. In July, Colorado joined California and Virginia in passing legislation that broadly protects residents' online privacy rights, including giving them the right to know about and delete all tracked information, and to opt out of future tracking. Similar bills are being actively considered by legislatures in 12 other states, including Alaska, New York, Louisiana and Pennsylvania. The growing legislative onslaught simply reflects the public's increasing concerns about privacy, says BMO analyst Salmon. "People like getting all these free services from tech companies," he says. "But they don't want the companies collecting their data."
Even without new laws, Big Tech is likely to be hit with more and more fines for its perceived transgressions. Both the Justice Department and the Federal Trade Commission, which fined Facebook $5 billion in 2019 for privacy violations such as sharing users' data with third parties without their knowledge or permission, have announced they are closely looking at Big Tech's past acquisitions to determine if there is a pattern of anti-competitive behavior. And the FTC is also investigating Meta's VR business to determine if the company has priced its VR headsets and shut out third-party VR software developers in ways that violate antitrust law, according to reports from Bloomberg and others. State attorneys general are also expected to act; Texas has already sued Meta for illegally gathering facial recognition data from users, a case that's currently in discovery.
And private groups are getting in on the action: in February Meta settled a class-action suit over tracking users through cookies after they had signed out of the Facebook platform, agreeing to pay $90 million to plaintiffs. And an Illinois group is suing Meta over the practice of allowing the posting of photographs of people who aren't users of the company's platforms.

Break Them Up?
For all the recent action aimed at Big-Tech, the U.S. is playing catch-up with Europe. The European Union passed the General Data Protection Regulation, or GDPR, back in 2018, placing strong limits on how tech companies can collect and use data, such as limiting user data to the minimum needed for an approved purpose, protecting the confidentiality of the data, and ensuring the data is accurate and up-to-date. That regulation even limits the ability of Big Tech to move data across borders to countries such as the U.S., where using the data would be legal.
Meta and Google have both publicly complained that the laws are hurting their core businesses. In filings with European regulators, Meta has implied it might withdraw access to its platforms from European users—though the company later issued a statement denying it is "threatening to leave Europe."
In March, the E.U. doubled down on its efforts to constrain Big Tech's growth by passing the Digital Markets Act, which places severe new limits on the companies' ability to promote their own products over competitors', to keep competitors from accessing their services, or to bundle or pre-install their services—all practices that are key parts of these companies' strategies. Under this act, for example, Google might not be able to pre-install its Android software on some phones or promote its own services in search results, Meta might not able to combine the data it has on Facebook and Instagram users, and Amazon might not be able to keep competitors from accessing information about the nearly two million merchants that sell on its platform.
European regulators have already leveled a nearly $3 billion fine on Google for promoting its shopping-comparison service over those of its competitors. Italy and the Netherlands have hit Apple with multi-million-dollar fines for anti-competitive behavior. And the U.K., which has already forced Meta to sell one small competitor it acquired, has appointed a special regulator to keep a particularly close eye on both Meta and Google.
The Digital Services Act goes even further. It would force the giant tech companies to police disinformation, illegal content and misleading advertising far more aggressively than they have in the past. The law, which bans online ads aimed at children, authorizes the European Union to levy fines of six percent of a company's annual worldwide revenue and to banish recidivists from the EU entirely.
The U.S. seems ready to follow Europe in cracking down. FTC Chair Lina Khan, appointed in June, has in the past proposed prohibiting Big Tech companies from expanding through antitrust regulation. One FTC antitrust suit against Meta, based in part on its acquisitions of WhatsApp and Instagram, got a green light from a judge in January. Separately, the FTC, along with several states, is investigating Meta for anti-competitive tactics in its new VR and metaverse business.
Google, meanwhile, faces lawsuits from the U.S. Department of Justice and multiple states over its dominance of the online search business. Congress is also considering two bipartisan bills, the American Innovation and Choice Online Act and the Open App Markets Act, that would further limit Big Tech's ability to stifle competition. Both are advancing to the Senate floor, where they are likely to pass.
Wielding antitrust law against Big Tech is tricky, says the Institute for Policy Studies' Collins, but growing public resentment of the companies have spurred lawmakers and regulators to figure out how to do it. "Anti-trust is a blunt instrument that was meant to address pricing competition, which is why it hasn't been used in meaningful ways in years," he says. "But the new actions are about the larger issues of bigness, power and influence."
When it comes to cutting Big Tech down to size, the history of antitrust in theU.S. suggests that the free market may beat regulators to the punch. The last big antitrust actions, against Microsoft in 1998 and IBM in 1969, were essentially dropped because competitors rose up to challenge and eventually beat the companies at their own game. Today IBM is a relatively small player, and while Microsoft is still a giant, its market value is half a trillion dollars less than Apple's. Today's Big Tech Five might likewise give up ground to smaller, nimbler, more innovative competitors.
Or it may be that they take each other down, like battling kaijus, as they start going after the same markets. Meta is now in the hardware business via its Quest VR headsets, where it competes directly with Google, Apple and Microsoft, who have been trying to get into this potentially explosive area. Amazon has seen Meta's Facebook Shops platform, as well as shopping on Instagram, cut into its core business.
What's more, Apple's move to block iPhone apps from tracking users by default may be just the first salvo in a war between Apple, Meta and Google to limit each other's insights into their users, damaging all their businesses, and perhaps dragging down the entire online advertising industry. Even Amazon and Microsoft could be hurt—they each earned $31 billion and $10 billion from advertising in 2021, respectively, and both clearly intend to grow those numbers. The proportion of the Big Five's revenues that come from businesses in which they compete with each other is now 40 percent, twice what it was six years ago, according to The Economist.
"A lot of the effort to undermine these companies is coming not from the public, but from competitors," says the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation's Atkinson. "Some of the biggest attacks are between the big tech companies themselves."
Tumblr media
You'll Miss Me When I'm Gone
Regardless of whether Big Tech succumbs to regulators, its own internal combat or new competitors, the public is likely to be the ultimate winner, claims Johnson. "Right now, it's hard to argue that consumers have a real choice," she says. "But I think that's changing, and we can be hopeful that a new wave of innovations is coming."
If this indeed is the beginning of the end of Big Tech, will we one day come to miss it? Will we look back nostalgically at Google's search bar, Facebook's news feed and Amazon's one-stop marketplace and the feeling of being enveloped in low-cost, convenient services? Or will we revel in the freedom and innovation that a new generation of scrappier, less-invasive companies brings us?
We should know soon enough.

Dave Prater
Tumblr media
David Prater Jr. (May 9, 1937 – April 9, 1988) was an American Southern soul and rhythm & blues singer and musician, who was the deeper baritone/tenor vocalist of the soul vocal duo Sam & Dave from 1961 until his death in 1988. He is a member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame (1992), the Grammy Hall of Fame (1999, for the song "Soul Man"), the Vocal Group Hall of Fame, and the Georgia Music Hall of Fame (1997), and he was a Grammy Award–winning (1967) and multiple Gold Record award-winning recording artist.
Biography

The Future Role of Passenger Rail and on Front Range Bike Destinations
By Juan DelaRoca
An innovative and bold vision around sustainable community development and growth is emerging in a most unlikely place. The southern Front Range, specifically Trinidad, Colorado, is poised to become a leader in recreation and tourism destination evolution as it emerges from a post pandemic reality. An increase in Colorado’s population led by urban to rural flight, along with the explosive popularity of outdoor recreation and tourism related activities is driving a greater number of residents and visitors to “explore more” of the state. This is pushing increased activity into the less discovered places, like Trinidad. This is why now is an opportune time to initiate a larger conversation around alternative transportation solutions that combine bicycle tourism and passenger rail service. The future sustainability of the region is at stake as outdoor recreation and tourism contribute to the regeneration of rural towns like Trinidad after decades of socio-economic decline. Bicycle travel and Amtrak passenger rail service are positioned to play a lead role in how and where people live, work, and play along the expanding I-25 corridor of Colorado. It will help manage the way people move about the region, while assisting with the preservation of a quality of life that attracts people to mountain rural towns in the first place.
An increasingly pronounced side effect of our hyper social media aware society is an advancement of an “explore more” mentality that drives more people towards the more remote parts of the West. Rural communities, such as Trinidad, are inherently impacted significantly as in and out of state visitors digitally discover new places to spend their time and money. People constantly posting status updates and photos of their outdoor adventures exponentially impacts a town in a short period of time. The influx of tourism traffic profoundly changes the way people experience a community, especially one transitioning towards becoming a “bike destination”. With the recent opening of Fisher Peak State Park, the southern Front Range is rapidly evolving towards a recreation and tourism based economy. The chance to create an iconic and sustainable bike destination model of the future requires passenger rail service to be a major component. Both the Amtrak Southwest Chief line and the Front Range Passenger Rail Initiative plant the southern Front Range region with an ability to pivot in a direction of smart growth and development. Now is the time to address this possibility as socio-economic trends as a result of the Covid pandemic accelerate.
Tumblr media
Advocating and integrating passenger rail bicycle travel policies now will help rural Colorado take advantage of the growing interest in cycling tourism. The economic spending that it generates and low carbon footprint helps balance the quality of life that comes under duress from the increased visitation. Trinidad has already started to tap into the fast growing gravel cycling trend. The town possesses the necessary ingredients for a gravel bike destination to emerge. They include easy access to miles of county roads from downtown, light to no vehicular traffic, and a beautiful landscape. Gravel bikes are also perfectly suited to attract cycling tourists using passenger rail service. This is why Amtrak should adopt a Southwest Chief bicycle travel policy similar to the one used by their other regional routes, like those on the East coast. Not only will it boost Southwest Chief ridership, but also impact the distribution of tourism dollars in a number of rural towns capable of becoming gravel bike destinations along the route. In Trinidad alone, the gravel bike segment represents $50+ million a year in tourism spending. Imagine how much the economic impact increases for other towns on the route between Chicago to Los Angeles? Places like Lawrence, Kansas, La Plata, Missouri can as easily become attractive to ride a bike like Flagstaff, Arizona.
Today, as state leaders and Amtrak move forward with Front Range passenger rail service initiatives, updating the bicycle travel policy must be a priority. It’s essential for building the sustainable bike destination of the future in Trinidad to be a success. Establishing an Amtrak bicycle travel policy around Trinidad’s efforts provides a blueprint that is exportable to other rural communities seeking to diversify they’re economic base by attracting new residents and visitors through outdoor recreation and tourism. The Colorado-New Mexico portion of the Southwest Chief line represents a nexus point. Updating the Amtrak bicycle travel policy immediately benefits both Trinidad (Colorado) and Raton (New Mexico), especially with Fisher Peak State Park situated between them. What if passenger rail even created a means of accessing the park itself? A setting where you could access the trail system at the top of Raton Pass and ride into either town?
Tumblr media
Not only does passenger rail service bring recreation based tourism dollars to the southern Front Range, but it also addresses increased automobile traffic on the local road network. Part of the alternative transportation opportunity is to provide a solution for the millions of residents and visitors who pass through Colorado’s second busiest port of entry. Implementing an enhanced bicycle travel policy on the Amtrak Southwest Chief helps ensure Trinidad is able to maintain an old west inspired adventure travel experience. A destination where one still sees the stars in the night sky. Where you are still lucky enough to run into wildlife on a carless bike ride. Future Front Range passenger rail service, starting with the Amtrak Southwest Chief, has the ability to influence how we introduce future generations of outdoor recreation enthusiasts to the wild places quickly disappearing under the intense pressures of growth and development. Updating the Amtrak Southwest Chief bicycle travel policy has a rippling effect beyond the  economics of cycling tourism. It can direct and push the urban “explore more” mindset towards sustainable travel behaviors into rural areas. What if we had more people posting photos of themselves riding the train to and from a travel destination?
The current Amtrak policy states travel with a bicycle on the Southwest Chief is allowed, however with limitations. You can only embark and disembark with a bicycle at designated stops, which are in no way convenient to those interested in using the service. Not making every stop accessible to bicycle travel hinders the ability for Amtrak to increase cycling tourist ridership on the Southwest Chief, which in turn hinders the spending of money in the rural places that need it most right now. The demand for passenger rail service for planning a cycling travel experience exists. A short survey shared with cyclists asked one simple question. “If a train were an option, would you consider using it for traveling to your next destination town?” Out of 100 responses, 95 answered yes. Denying bicycle travel on the train between Trinidad and Raton is holding back the opportunity to create a sustainable bike destination. Modernizing the Amtrak Southwest Chief bicycle travel policy at the Colorado-New Mexico border improves everyone's bottom line, especially as Amtrak begins to introduce new long distance trains.
There are precedents of integrating bicycle travel into alternative transportation solutions already. Buses and trains are already available to cyclists to explore more of the urban Front Range corridor. Many years ago, I was first introduced to the RTD bus between Boulder-Nederland with a mountain bike experience. The idea of loading a bike onto the bus and traveling 30 minutes west and riding back to Boulder changed my personal approach to cycling. Later, I applied this insight while living in Denver. Light Rail became a resource for accessing the trail networks at Green Mountain, Matthew Winters, and Apex before riding back to my Denver North neighborhood. Proving the point further is the adoption of passenger rail in accessing recreation activities is the Denver Winter Park Express train. It’s popularity demonstrates why an improved Amtrak Southwest Chief bicycle travel policy can work in southern Colorado. Taos Ski Valley founder Ernie Blake also recognized the business benefits of passenger trains. It played a major role in targeting urban Chicago residents interested in the New Mexico ski experience. Now this same visionary thinking is needed as Trinidad and Raton move towards an outdoor recreation and tourism based economy. Passenger rail service helps create the sustainable and iconic bike destination these towns must become as people “explore more” of the west.
Amtrak has threatened to eliminate the Southwest Chief line a number of times in the past. Fortunately, the rural communities of Kansas, Colorado, and New Mexico, at the behest of political leaders, came together and saved it’s demise. This is why the Southwest Chief & Front Range Passenger Rail Commission came into existence. Now it can help connect the historically isolated southern Front Range to more people from not only Colorado, but the Midwest and West Coast. Passenger rail from Fort Collins, Denver, Colorado Springs, and Pueblo not only enhances where residents travel to live, work, and play in the state, but also expands the reach and impact visitors have on the region's recreation and tourism economy. Establishing an improved Amtrak bicycle travel policy on the train has a cascading long term effect on local business because it promotes activity in the downtown core of a community.
Trinidad and Raton are squarely on the path to becoming a popular recreation and tourism destination. Fishers Peak and the 19,200 acres between them will be one of the most digitally photographed natural landmarks in the years ahead. A bicycle friendly corridor that rivals the distance from Aspen to Crested Butte is going to become a tourism draw in itself. Managing the flow of human traffic seeking to “explore more” needs an improved Amtrak bicycle travel policy before it becomes too late. Utilizing passenger rail service to create an iconic and sustainable bike destination can be a unique feature to economic development simply because it has never been done anywhere in the world. The closest thing would be the mountain bike and gondola system used in the Sud Tirol region of Austria. The rail that crosses Raton Pass is capable of delivering the equivalent experience. Only without the need to install infrastructure like lift towers and service roads. The infrastructure is more or less in place already.
Improving access to the Colorado-New Mexico region through a bicycle travel policy that makes sense can propel Trinidad towards becoming a world class bike destination and serve as a model for other communities to emulate. The intense influx of population of the last twenty years is due largely in part to outdoor recreation and tourism. Throw in social media, the pandemic, and the strong demands of cycling tourism, and the rate of it hastens. The need for building a southern Front Range bike destination that is iconic and sustainable is born out of the reality that inevitably development and growth out of Denver and Colorado Springs will continue to push further south in tandem with the urban to rural flight of 2021.
A simple tweak to the Amtrak Southwest Chief bicycle travel policy will help Trinidad, and inspire other rural towns, to capitalize on these trends. Everyone involved benefits. Amtrak increases ridership and millions of tourism spending helps revitalize communities after decades of decline, while also preserving the qualities that make them attractive. Prioritizing and updating the bicycle train travel policy, starting with the Southwest Chief, is a simple action item for Amtrak and the Front Range Passenger Rail Commission to realize. A sound plan to systematize and promote a forward thinking bicycle train travel policy will result in the creation of a sustainable travel destination like no other done before as the “explore more” mindset increasingly takes a stronger hold on the Front Range megaregion. Post pandemic life has provided us with a chance to hit the reset button, visualize, and build special travel destinations of the future.
