1969 Dodge Dart GTS 440: Mr. Norm Made the Engine Swap That Mopar Called Impossible
As muscle car historical narratives go, the one for the M-code, 440-powered 1969 Dodge Dart GTS is familiar: To keep up with increasingly quick cross-town competitors in the Stock Eliminator classes, a larger, nonproduction engine was shoehorned into the engine compartment. The caveat, of course, was that the specialty model had to be built in sufficient quantities to satisfy the sanctioning bodies, with NHRA being the 800-pound gorilla wearing the tech inspection patch on his jacket.
To give credit where it’s due, the 440-powered compact Dart package was originally conceived and executed in 1968 by Chicago dealer Norman Kraus (Mr. Norm) and his Grand Spaulding Dodge dealership. He was the Don Yenko of the Mopar world and had already raised eyebrows and helped lower e.t.’s in 1967 when he installed a 383 in a Dart and dubbed it the GSS, after the factory’s insistence it couldn’t be done. When he proved the folks in Highland Park wrong, they launched the Dart GTS with the same, impossible-to-fit RB big-block.
The shipping weight on the 440-powered Dart GTS was listed at 3,305 pounds, which was right around 200 pounds more than 340 small-block-equipped models—with all that weight over the front axle.
The next year, he doubled down with the 440 in his Dart GSS, with at least 50 produced to make the cars eligible for NHRA Super Stock competition. Again, Mother Mopar followed suit and offered the factory-official, M-code, 440-powered Dart GTS in 1969. Total GTS production for 1969 was 6,285 hardtops and 417 convertibles. Only 640 of the hardtops were M-code–equipped.
Hurst was involved, too. The cars rolled off the Hamtramck (Dodge Main) line as E63-code 383 models and were shipped to Hurst’s conversion facility, where the 440 engines were installed. The changeover included specific engine mounts and a few other unique parts.
The M-code reference, then, is the special engine designation in the fifth position of the VIN. All true 440 GTS model VIN plates start with LS23M. Additionally, M9B was stamped on the fender tag, indicating the special-order 440. It’s another corroborating factor in a car’s authenticity, and that installation was handled by a third-party vendor.
All GTS models featured a black bumblebee stripe, denoted on the fender tag by the code V8X: V8 for the stripe and X for the black color.
The four-barrel 440 was rated at 375 hp, although its maximum potential was somewhat stifled by restrictive exhaust manifolds, a compromise to the narrow confines of the unitized A-body’s lower engine compartment. Nevertheless, the factory GTS was good for mid-13-second e.t.’s out of the box and high 12s with headers and few of the other tuning tricks of the day.
A 727 TorqueFlite three-speed automatic was the only transmission offered with the M-code 440; power steering and power brakes weren’t available. Disc brakes weren’t offered, either. A 3.55-geared 8 3/4-inch Sure Grip rear axle was standard, and 3.91 gears were optional. It was the quintessential muscle car package: big engine and no power-robbing accessories. But underhood space was also a factor. With the RB engine in place, there wasn’t much room for power accessories.
With Chrysler’s signature offset engine placement, one of the biggest challenges of installing an RB-based engine in the A-body chassis is finding room for the exhaust manifold on the passenger side of the engine. The 440 engine was rated at 375 hp, breathing through a Carter AVS four-barrel carburetor.
Out the door, the retail price for an M-code Dart GTS was about $3,150, plus another $30 or so if the customer opted for the 3.91 axle ratio. Adjusted for inflation, that’s about $21,600 today, or basically Fiat 500 money for a special-build homologation special. It was a hell of deal then and looks even better today!
But like other similarly intended packages of the day, there were a few strings attached to the warranty card. The driveline—driveshaft, U-joints, rear axle, and so on—was exempted from coverage, and the warranty wasn’t transferable to the next strip jockey, either. Dodge built the cars for a singular purpose and wasn’t about to replace the axles for customers whose track aspirations exceeded their experience or talent.
The proximity of the valve cover and exhaust manifold to the unassisted brake booster suggests why Dodge didn’t offer power brakes with the M-code package. There was no room for a power booster.
A Lasting Impression
Nick Brouwer’s affinity for high-powered Darts began in 1972, while he was hosing down the new and used cars at an Ontario car dealership. “At the time, people were trading in all sorts of muscle cars,” he says. “One of the cleanest was a gold 1969 Dart GTS with a 340 engine. I knew my older brother was looking for a new set of wheels and, during dinner one evening, I really talked up the Dodge.”
Nick’s brother took the bait and bought the Dart.
“I loved the way the car and its big cam sounded,” says Nick. “And it looked great in gold, with its black tail stripe. It just did everything for me, and I’ve loved those cars ever since.”
It would be another 12 years before he would purchase his first Dart (another gold 1969 GTS with a 340), but it would be far from his last. The rare M-code 440 model would be his holy grail. It took nearly 20 years to find it.
Based on the up-level GT trim, the M-code GTS’s interior was well equipped with premium vinyl upholstery, bucket seats, console, and more. No tach, however.
“As these things often go, there were plenty of dead-ends and inaccurate descriptions, but I was persistent,” Nick says. “Finally, one popped up in northern Ontario, and I immediately went to see it.”
Originally sold through Grand Spaulding Dodge, the R6 Red Dart was a recent transplant from the States, where it lived mostly in the South and had been turned into a race car, complete with wheel tubs, roughly hacked fender openings, and other track-oriented equipment. Additionally, the odometer showed only 640 miles, which were likely acquired, as the cliché goes, a quarter-mile at a time.
“It was a 20-footer,” recalls Nick. “It had a lot of war wounds, but was very solid and rust-free. I couldn’t say no.”
The floor shifter links to a TorqueFlite automatic, the only transmission available. There apparently wasn’t enough room for a four-speed’s linkage.
A complete restoration was ordered for the car, but as other things in the world of cars go, the original resto shop faltered on its commitment. After the car had languished on the rotisserie for about a year with no appreciable work to show for the time and money, Nick had it taken to another shop to complete the work.
“It was frustrating, but in the end, the car turned out exceptionally well,” he says. “It looks factory-new and drives just as well.”
Despite the sheetmetal surgery previous owners had performed on the rare Mopar, the interior had been left largely intact, and much of it remains original. The engine was rebuilt to stock specs. Correct drivetrain components replaced the racing parts.
Fourteen-inch wheels were standard, as were basic dog dish caps. These Deluxe wheel covers added $15.25 to the sticker price.
Nick’s M-code Dart is a jewel in a collection of eight additional Darts, including that gold GTS he bought back in 1984. Admittedly, the car now sees more time on the show field than the dragstrip, but that’s understandable for a 50-year-old rarity that is, perhaps, one of less than 100 known survivors. The others undoubtedly succumbed to their Super Stock battle wounds or the sheetmetal cancer that afflicted so many of the otherwise strong strip warriors.
The car is a regular at the Moparfest, Canada’s largest all-Mopar show, where Norm Kraus himself holds court for the weekend in August. Nick’s Dart is shown alongside the Mr. Norm’s display.
“He’s a creative, far-thinking guy who did a lot to push Mopar performance forward in new and unexpected avenues,” says Nick about Mr. Norm. “That this car was not only conceived by him, but sold through his dealership, is a thrill for a real enthusiast like me.”
Nick Brouwer’s M-code car is one of nine Darts in his collection.
As compression ratios and the muscle car market began to wane in the early 1970s, Mr. Norm held out to the end, developing performance packages for Demons, including a supercharged version. When the muscle car market was on its last breath, he turned to the next big trends: vans. He was an early pioneer in the conversion van business.
Yet his GSS Darts and the factory-backed M-code GTS models, however, are his true legacy, cars the factory originally said couldn’t be built. That’s showing them!
Decoding the Tags

Sterling Silver and Enameled Metal Pieces
While silver and gold fluctuate in price on the markets, they’ll never not be valuable. And since sterling was relatively cheap back in the day, it’s feasible that your family could have a few pieces that demand a pretty penny. “For pieces that retain their value over time, look to precious metal antiques including sterling silver flatware, tea sets, and also enameled metal pieces like Cloisonné and Champleve,” advises Michael de Bondt, an antique buyer and estate sales dealer in Sarasota, Florida. “Because of the workmanship and level of quality in these items, they can be worth money for decades or longer and remain more stable than trending antiques and collectibles.”

De Bondt adds that Far East antiques also hold their value for a long time.
“The hottest items now that people might have lurking in attics from grandma’s parlor are Asian pieces,” he says. “We especially like Chinese snuff bottles, antique urns and bronze pieces.”

Kevin Bernhard, owner of Rust-and-Shine vintage and handmade market in Baltimore, reveals that sales for vintage toys and game boxes are especially healthy.
“Most people think they are trash, but people buy them to reunite a toy with its original packaging, or just use it as art,” he says.
Another decent moneymaker is the fast food and cartoon character collector glassware from the 1980s.
“With ’80s kids now having disposable income, they are being bought up like crazy. There’s just something fun about drinking an adult beverage out of a glass that you used to sip apple juice out of,” says Bernhard. “Another favorite are stuffed animals from the ’80s and early ’90s. Alf, Teddy Ruxpin and My Buddy dolls fly off the shelves.”
Coins
Most coins will always be worth their face value – even if that has diminished over the years thanks to inflation. But some coins, especially rare ones in excellent condition, far exceed their original value. The same goes for paper money, too, which isn’t uncommon to find in attics previously owned by war-era families and veterans.

427-Powered 1966 Chevrolet Impala SS
In 1965, GM introduced entirely new fullsize cars in the Buick, Cadillac, Pontiac, Oldsmobile, and Chevrolet brands. At the time, hard as it is to believe now, GM controlled more than 50 percent of the U.S. new car market. There was even talk of breaking up GM into two or more companies because it was seen that the company had an almost monopolistic control of the domestic marketplace. How quaint that seems today, right?
What set apart the fullsize GM cars was their styling. Their fullsize Chrysler and Ford competitors seemed dowdy by comparison, even given that both had all-new fullsize models in 1965 as well. GM’s styling signature was a Coke-bottle look with pronounced rear fenders and a very sloped, almost fastback roof line on the two-door hardtop models. All models featured curved side glass, enhancing the look.
Underneath the sleek, contemporary body was an all-new perimeter-style frame. Gone was the X-frame that dated back to the 1959 models. And the suspension was upgraded with full coil springs that gave a substantially improved, almost Cadillac ride.
Among the fullsize GM cars, Chevrolet offered an almost bewildering number of models at the start of the 1965 model year, including sedans, hardtops, station wagons, and convertibles over the Biscayne, Bel Air, and Impala series. And midyear in 1965, Chevrolet introduced a top-of-the-line Caprice Custom Sedan as a four-door hardtop model. In 1966 it became Chevrolet’s top series, replacing the Impala much as the Impala replaced the Bel Air as Chevy’s top model series in 1958.
All of this sets the stage for 1966, when the fullsize Chevrolet models received a substantial restyle with both ends receiving a more formal, squared-off look. While the Caprice series stood atop the fullsize Chevy lineup, its emphasis was on luxury, not sportiness. For a sporty, fullsize Chevy, one would opt for the bucket-seat Impala SS. The SS series was introduced in 1961, and until the introduction of the Caprice as a standalone model in 1966, the two-door hardtops and convertibles were the most expensive fullsize Chevrolets.
That brings us to the 1966 Chevrolet Impala SS two-door hardtop shown here, owned by Stephen Halluska. Our path and his Danube Blue with black vinyl top fullsize bruiser had crossed many times over the years, at the La Jolla Concours d’Elegance, at the annual Qualcomm Stadium Swap Meet in San Diego, and finally at the 2016 San Marino Motor Classic. There it competed against traditional big-block muscle cars because of its 390hp, 427ci V-8 coupled to a four-speed manual transmission. A year later, in the summer of 2017, we finally got the opportunity to photograph the car and speak with Halluska about its history.
First off, you can say this car has come full circle. It has returned to Southern California after having been manufactured at GM’s Van Nuys assembly plant. This is a facility that built hundreds of thousands of fullsize Chevrolets cars from its inception until 1992, when it was shuttered as GM moved production of the Camaro and Pontiac Firebird to Quebec.
The car was delivered to its first owner by Capitol Chevrolet in Salt Lake City. By the 1990s it had made its way to Oregon, where it was owned by a retired priest who had amassed a collection of fullsize Bowties. During this time Halluska developed his own attraction to 1966 Chevrolets after starting with his first love, the 1962 models. His first 1966 Chevy was a 327 Powerglide model acquired from its original owner out of New Mexico. After he owned several 1966 models, his quest focused on the rarest of the rare, a 427 Impala Super Sport equipped with the four-speed manual transmission.
At the 1993 gathering of the 1965-1966 Fullsize Chevrolet Club, Halluska connected with Reverend Hank, as he was known. He had three 427 Chevys, including a 42,000-mile, 427/four-speed model that was the object of Halluska’s desire. At the time, Reverend Hank was unwilling to part with it, but the two remained in contact.
Halluska continued his quest, building up a stash of rare and N.O.S. 1966 parts until two years later, when Reverend Hank offered up the car to him after sending him a comprehensive set of photos. Halluska wasted no time and jumped on it immediately. In his eyes, he now had the Holy Grail of 1966 Impalas, a 427, four-speed, two-door hardtop.
To finance the acquisition of the car, Halluska sold the original New Mexico car, but not before removing from it many of the highly-prized N.O.S. parts that would be used in the restoration of the 427 car. The Impala SS arrived in San Diego in January 1995, which started a two-year-long restoration effort. The car was in good condition overall but at some point had acquired a coat of yellow paint. It would require a comprehensive restoration to bring it up to Halluska’s exacting standards.
Over the years, the Impala’s original window sticker had remained with it, so Halluska knew exactly what would be required to return it back to the level of perfection it displayed when it rolled down the Van Nuys assembly line 29 years earlier. The two-year restoration included replacing the trunk floor, rusted out due to a missing decklid seal, and rust repair was required on the rear quarter-panels. After the body had been prepped, the car was painted locally in its original Danube Blue by Bennie Macias. For the interior, the front seat upholstery was replaced, while the original rear seat upholstery was redyed to match. The mechanicals—the engine, transmission, and front suspension—had been rebuilt previously by Reverend Hank, so they required little attention. The dual-exhaust system needed replacement, and the brakes were rebuilt.
In January 1997, Halluska’s high-powered Impala returned to the road and found its restoration featured in Classic Auto Restorer magazine as well as a three-page story in Super Chevy. Photos of the car also appeared in two books, Chevrolet in the Sixties and Impala: 1958-2000. It is apparent from our photos that Halluska has carefully maintained the Impala, as the car presents itself as if it is a recent, fresh restoration. About the only visual change over the 20 years was the replacement of the original wire wheel covers with the even more attractive RPO N96 Z-16-style simulated mag wheel hubcaps most often seen on Chevelles but offered on the fullsize Chevys as well.
Part of the car’s interesting history are some significant options. What makes this four-speed (RPO M20, $230.03) 390hp 427 (RPO L36, $313.68) car so rare is that it was also equipped with the combination of the AM/FM stereo radio (RPO U69, $132.79) and the external stereo amplified four-speaker package (RPO U79, $104.66).
These four options, costing $781.16 back in 1966, would set you back $5,900 in 2017 dollars, a not inconsequential sum. And this is on top of the base price of $2,927 of an Impala SS Sport Coupe, $21,477 today. The car’s $4,290.98 bottom line translates to $31,477 today, making this something of a high-performance bargain when adjusted for five decades of inflation.
When we first encountered the car more than two years ago, it was the four knobs mounted in the center console that attracted our attention. While the U79 option, first offered in 1965, was offered across the Chevrolet lineup, including the Corvair, the controls were usually mounted in a pod below the dash. On an SS model, the controls for the volume, tone, balance, and fader were mounted between the seats in the console where today one might find controls for a multimedia and navigation system. Back in 1966, the navigation system consisted of road maps that were given away free by most service stations—another institution that has disappeared over the years.
These four options, combined, indicate that Halluska’s car might well be a one-of-one build. First, the L36 engine found its way into just 3,287 of the 102,619 Impala SS Sport Coupes built in 1966. The M20 four-speed manual transmission made its way into 30,467 of the 774,214 fullsize Chevrolets that rolled off the assembly line that year. The U69 AM/FM stereo pushbutton radio? Just 34,066 installations. And the U79 option? That option was installed in 12,436 of the 774,214 fullsize Chevys built that year (including the Caprice production of 210,515).
While either the 427/390 L36 or the 427/425 L72 were low-production engines for the Impala SS, they were not the lowest. Almost all Impala SS models were equipped with V-8 engines, though 823 two-door hardtops and just 89 convertibles were equipped with the 250ci, 155hp straight-six. Who would have thought?
While we drove to the location where we photographed Halluska’s big brute Impala SS at sunset, when the light turned green he simply couldn’t resist pushing the pedal to the floor. The smile on his face told us everything we needed to know. (In 1966 Motor Trend tested the 390hp 427 Impala SS and found that it went from zero to 60 in 7.9 seconds and would cover the quarter-mile in 16.8 seconds with a trap speed of 88 mph.)
Halluska’s Danube Blue Impala SS Sport Coupe is not a by-definition muscle car, an intermediate model, like the Chevelle, with a big engine. It is a muscular car. It was manufactured at a time when the Big Three offered high-powered engines in their fullsize cars for a combination of size and power that was unrivaled. The 427-powered fullsize Chevys stand at the top of this exclusive class.

Stephen Halluska waited two years until this Impala SS’s previous owner decided he would part with it, and then spent another two years restoring the fullsize Chevy. That restoration was completed 20 years ago, but the car still looks fresh out of the paint booth.
Chevrolet offered the 427-inch big-block in every model from the base Biscayne two-door sedan to the Caprice six- and nine-passenger station wagons, according to the 1966 Chevrolet brochure. The L36 version in Halluska’s Impala was rated at 390 hp.
During the restoration Halluska replaced the front-seat upholstery but was able to reuse the rear seat covers. The RPO A81 headrests were a very rare option, appearing in less than 1 percent of the fullsize Chevys built in 1966.
Another rare option aboard Halluska’s Impala is the external stereo amplified four-speaker package. The four dials in the center console control the AM/FM radio’s volume, tone, balance, and fader.
Though typically seen on Chevelles, the N96 Z-16–style, mag-wheel hubcaps were also available on Impalas in 1966.
The fact that the Impala’s window sticker was still with the car made it easier for Halluska to determine what was needed for the restoration.
