With her virtuoso status in mind, it should come as no surprise that Lorde grew up in a musical household, and the debut single from her younger sister Indy Yelich is simply proof of that. Teasers of new music have featured on Indy’s IG for close to a year, so excitement for her first release has been well and truly simmering. The NZ-born, NYC-based singer-songwriter’s debut single “Threads”…

Yes, Indy Yelich is Lorde’s sister. 

But it’s not really fair to compare her debut single ‘Threads’ to her sister’s own body of work.  

Sure, her vocals sound eerily similar at times. But there’s a glossy yet low-key wistfulness that departs from Ella’s own bitter angst of the Melodrama era, the gauzy, ocean-like synths sweeping the 23-year-old New Zealander’s heart out to a sea aching with youthful nostalgia and longing.  

‘Love you the same/But I'm afraid that/You might let me/Rip at the threads we wove together,’ she admits as she looks pleadingly at the camera, her room all bathed in purple (a colour she feels best represents the song’s themes of love and loss). ‘Threads’ is the kind of track that could only have been written and released in your early 20s: just after your first real love, your first real heartbreak, and just as you’re beginning to navigate this big, wide world. 

‘I've always had a very distinct voice but now, at 23, I finally feel I know exactly what I’m trying to say,’ says Indy (via Triple J). 

She continues:  

‘I wrote this song when I was going through a very on-off relationship for years. When I think of this song I think of a passionate argument, miscommunication, the excitement of New York City night life. A toxic, messy love affair. Flashbacks of the moments shared together vs being out surrounded by friends, always caught in between.’
