“Do you remember when you last slept?”
The question speared through the silence of the room, slicing through the usual calm that slipped between them. Damian's tone was pointed, as if he was trying to gauge her response before determining how angry he should be. 
“No.” Raven sighed and ran her hand through her hair, scowling at the grease that slipped through her fingers. She couldn’t remember the last time she had showered, let alone slept. “Wait. Maybe. Three nights ago?”
Taking a sip of her now-cold coffee with a double shot of espresso, she fell into her usual chair in Damian’s library, tilting her head back to stare at the fresco on the ceiling. In the warm light, fat, happy cherubs smiled down at her, unconcerned of the exhaustion coursing through her veins.
“Raven.” Damian’s voice sounded like a sultry reprimand and a promise of deep sleep all at once, teetering on the edge of being understanding and wanting to spank her. Raven forced back a laugh at that thought. The spanking probably wouldn’t punish her in the way he was hoping.  
He sighed and leveled a hard stare at her from his spot behind his massive desk, pushing his laptop to the side. “You need to rest.” 
“No.” She pulled her head upright and glared at him. He knew exactly why she was running herself ragged. “I need to solve-”
“Raven.” Damian let go of a low, echoing growl - a warning that his patience was thin. “You need to sleep. You can’t keep running yourself ragged, chasing leads that don’t go anywhere.”
“Your reputation is on the line.” She was trying to impress how important this was, but he wasn’t understanding it. 
The air in the room suddenly changed, and Damian stood up and walked over to where she sat. He crossed his arms over his chest and glared down at her. “You think I care about my reputation, Raven? You think that matters to me?”
“Damian.” She leveled an incredulous stare at him. “Some part of Wayne industries is implicated in whatever this illegal smuggling is. I’m trying to keep you from being implicated too.”
“I will survive this. My reputation is always on the line. It’s on the line when I wear the wrong colored suit to a summer function. It’s on the line when I make a business decision without learning all the facts. It’s part of being who I am, and I’m used to it.” He dropped down to his knees in front of her, resting a hand on her lap. “You, however, will start hallucinating in another few hours.” Damian slid his hand up to her shoulder, pushing her blazer off of her. “Now, since you went to all that trouble to sneak into my house, let's get you undressed and in bed.”
“I…” Raven felt Damian’s warm hand slide up her neck, his thumb sliding into a tense muscle and rubbing a knot free. A soft sigh escaped from between her lips and she leaned into the touch. Maybe giving in wouldn’t be so bad… “A bath. I need a bath.” 
Damian sighed and slipped his arms under her, lifting her up from the chair and pulling her close to his chest. Raven frowned at him. “I’m not some damsel in distress that needs to be babied. I’m a detective, with a gun, I might add.” 
“Humor me.” He huffed in her ear. “You can shoot at me later.” 
He walked her through the quiet dark of Wayne Manor, taking her through the master bedroom to the en suite bathroom. He set her down on the cold, marble tiles and turned on the taps to the bath, filling the room with warm, luxurious steam that smelled faintly of lavender and chamomile. It felt divine, and she hadn’t even touched the water yet. While the bath was filling, Damian stripped her of her clothes, and set her in the frothing water. She sunk deep into the bathtub, letting the bubbles tickle up around her shoulders and neck. 
“How does that feel?” Damian settled behind her outside of the tub, rolling his sleeves back. 
“Better.” She shivered and Damian began to massage shampoo into her hair, his touch lulling her into a space outside of sleep, but still not in the waking world. “I want this to end, Damian… because the sooner it does, then the sooner I feel like maybe I can be… with you. In public. As more than just a detective working on your case.” The admission made her flush, and she opened her eyes to see Damian staring down at her, his face unreadable. 
“Raven, I want that.” He slid his arms around her shoulders, pulling her close to him. “But not if your health comes as an expense. I will wait for this investigation to be completed, and having you run yourself ragged isn’t going to make that happen any sooner.” He rinsed the shampoo from her hair, and tipped her head back to look into her eyes. “So, rest.”
‘You know, that’s rich coming from a man who wanders around Gotham in a bat suit all night.” 
He rolled his eyes but didn’t respond to her dig at him. Instead he let the silence settle over them both, the soft washcloth sliding up and down her skin, lulling her into a state of relaxation. Forcing her eyes open, she stared up at Damian and reached out to grab his arm. “I think… I should get out. And go sleep.” 
A teasing, I-told-you-so smile pulled at his lips, and he kissed her forehead. “Yeah. I think you’re right.” He drained the water and wrapped her in an oversized, fluffy towel drying her off. Damian brought her back to his room, dressing her in one of his undershirts and then tucked her into his bed, pulling the covers up over her. “I’ll let Captain Grayson know that you probably won’t be in tomorrow.”
Her eyes felt heavy and every muscle in her body was fighting to give into that sweet seduction of sleep. Raven shivered and grabbed his arm, pulling him closer to her. “You’ll stay… won’t you?” She wasn’t sure why she felt like she needed him to stay, but the only thing she really knew was that she needed him here with her. She needed to know he was close. 
“Yeah.” Damian lowered himself down next to her, wrapping his arms tight around her chest. “Until you wake up, beloved.” He adjusted to get comfortable, drawing her back into his arms as he kissed her shoulders. “Now, for the love of God, go to sleep.”
Raven was trying to think of a swift, sharp response, but she was already too far gone. Tonight, she’d let him have the last word.

Shiv pocketed the phone, then reached out and took Ornarch’s withered hand. “I’ll do it.”
Her god smiled. “I knew I could count on you.” With a twist of his long, thin fingers, a sleek black card appeared and found its way between her fingers. “Twenty thousand credits.”
Shiv nearly dropped the card in surprise. “Twenty thousand?!” The payout for picking a pocket was three digits at the highest: cards would be canceled long before they could be used, and there was always the risk that the mark might have augments or trackers. B&E paid better, but you needed to find a fence who could break into stolen electronics, and they were almost universally scum. The shit she and Raz had looted on the botched job could have been worth a hundred grand, even after a steep cut from both Ornarch and a middleman, but that had taken weeks of planning and cost her an arm. Twenty thousand up front was unthinkable.
Ornarch waved a hand dismissively, rings glinting in the industrial glare. “Grease some palms, hire some muscle, buy a gun. Whatever makes the job easier.”
“Thank you, lord.” She hesitated a moment, realizing she had no idea where to start looking. “Do you have any leads?”
“How were Raz’s finances?”
“About as broke as me, I think. Those implants cost a lot.”
“So they’d need to sell off some of the haul to get away from here. They aren’t safe in the Diluvian, and fare out of here is pricey.”
“I’ll ask around.”
“Wonderful.”
“Any idea as to why they did it?”
“No. No clue.” She almost choked on the words. That was the worst part, the bit that kept her up at night. What could have been so important that they’d just leave her?
“Ah well. Good luck, Shiv.” The dismissal, unspoken, was irrefutable. She would do what he wanted, he would give her what she wanted. The conversation was over. For all his immortality, Ornarch was not a patient god.
Shiv turned to leave, the roar of water rushing up to meet her as she approached the exit of the pipe. Could she even kill them? In a fistfight, even down an arm, definitely. Guns were a toss-up given that neither of them knew how to shoot. But of course, Raz was a skulljack, and a good one at that.
Skulljack. It was a dirty word, the worst kind of mage. Raz’s brilliant blue undercut hid dozens of neurocranial implants–translators and antennae and arcane batteries–all bent towards one terrible purpose: the subjugation of the will. In that dingy waiting room before their first operation, she’d told them not to do it, but she’d come to rely on their skills in the years since: skulljacking took too long to be useful in a fight, but it was priceless in an interrogation.
Of course, skulljacking was easier the better you knew someone, and they’d grown up together. Over a decade and a half, she and Raz had bared every last rotten secret–had aired out every scrap of encryption around their souls. They promised they’d never fuck with her, but would she know if they had? Even if they hadn’t, how long could she hold out against someone who knew her first crush, all her fears, and everything she’d ever dreamt of?
As she climbed the stairs back to street level, her nervous thoughts sublimated into a mantra, repeated with every step. 
I’m not who I was a month ago. That woman could never imagine killing them. I can.

It's a fundamental part of capitalism, this is a feature. Not a bug. A company that makes more profit is able to invest more in facilities, more in worker training, more in publicity and advertising, more in new locations, more in vertical integration. Companies that have more of these shiny features will then make even MORE profit, which can then be invested further in such things, to make even MORE profit, ad infinitum.
Money begets money, leading to exponential growth on the part of the capitalist. This means that on a long enough timescale, the one with the most profit comes out on top. The other corp in your industry having higher profit margins than you is one of the biggest fears of a capitalist. Corporations and those that are in charge of them are explicitly incentivised to generate as much profit as possible, because if they don't, then the more ruthless guy with more profit will undercut their prices, purchase land in key locations, advertise better and more often than them, etcetera etcetera.
It's the same fundamental concept behind ACAB. Yeah, good people who are conscious of their responsibility to help people, and are self aware of their inherent biases, and take action to counteract them, WILL sign up to be police officers. In the same way that kind, compassionate people with consideration and care for others WILL try to become businesspeople. But the system in which they operate will select them out. Good people that end up as cops are fired or discharged when they whistleblow. Good people that end up as business owners will be muscled out by the competition that artificially controls the economy to their benefit and isn't queasy at the thought of using unsafe working conditions, obscene hours, and child labor.
It's a fundamental flaw in capitalism, the natural funneling of money upwards, and the exponential way in which it does so. Individual ownership of private property allows for business owners and land owners to engage in a sick little rat race at the expense of all of the spectators. And no amount of regulation is gonna stop it. Even if you try to bring back the so-called "good old days" where work regulations were solid and you could afford college and a house as an average person, they're always gonna pull another Reagan. Money accumulates, hands are greased, political campaigns are funded, education is slowly defunded, propaganda is disseminated, lies are spread, and suddenly you have another hyper-conservative, laissez-faire political party controlling your country that rolls back all those lovely regulations, while tricking most of the people into thinking it's a good thing.
So long as political and economic power lies in the hands of the few rather than the many, and so long as individuals are allowed to exponentially accumulate wealth all on their lonesome, we are doomed to the fate we have now. The only way to escape it is to stop repeating history and change the system with which we operate.
No capitalist is ever going to stop gunning for the biggest profit possible, because if they do, they lose. They get kicked out of the rat race, and become a spectator. Because every other capitalist is ALSO gunning for the most profit, meaning they'll get overtaken incredibly fast if they falter for even a moment. If every capitalist simultaneously stopped going for maximum profit? Yeah I can see it happening. But no individual is gonna break away from the game. Or, so few individuals will break away that it's negligible.
companies really have got to be okay with stagnant profits. what is wrong with earning the same amount every year? why does it always have to be more? it's not sustainable. there are only so many people on the planet you can profit from 😭
