Mycotech: The Indonesian Startup Biofabricating novel materials from mushrooms
Called Mycotech Lab, the company was inspired by tempeh, the traditional Indonesian food made from fermented soybeans, and came up with its own technology to grow its ethical and carbon-friendly mycelium-based materials.
Mycotech Lab decided to experiment with the fermentation process used to make tempeh to make a new fabric out of the complex root structure of mushrooms, otherwise known as mycelium. It was a lengthy trial-and-error process that kicked off in 2016, but “finally, we found one mushroom with a mycelium that can be made into binding material,” said Erlambang Ajidarma, head of research at the startup, in conversation with Reuters.
The final product, developed with fungus grown on sawdust that then gets scraped off and dried and cut into different sizes, is Mylea, a fibrous but tough material that acts just like the real thing. It’s waterproof, pliable, durable, and most importantly, is far more sustainable than existing plastic-based synthetic leathers or carbon-intensive real leather made from hide.
Mycotech also uses natural dye extracted from roots, leaves and food waste in the region to colour their leather alternative, which again is a process that is far less polluting than traditional tanning processes used for real cowhide that leaves behind solid and liquid waste that contains chromium and other hazardous compounds.
Since its inception, Mycotech has managed to grow its client base with no marketing budget because the demand for sustainable alternatives has grown alongside awareness of the damaging effects of animal-based materials in the fashion industry.

MORE SHIPRATS
More specifically about the suits. I'm picturing cyberpunk type stuff but lets be honest, Humans are humans. There's going to be helmets covered in fauxhawks and stickers, someone's going to opt out of everything practical in preference of a prehensile tail, we're going to express ourselves in thousands of ways. But functionality/general aesthetic I'm picturing for Katie, at least, is starting to form in my mind so you're going to get that. I mentioned a back mounted drone thing and I'll be honest, it's pretty inspired by Stray. One shoulder has a little thing like that, but probably in grey or black to blend in with the average guts of a ship. Maybe the drone itself is clear so that it's even harder for the giants to notice. The other shoulder has a speaker that can pop out that amplifies her voice to communicate if need be. I picture the grappling system to launch from the wrist but the line is actually attached to the waist and the suit works and supports like a rock climbing harness. Backpack is full of all sorts of tools, and Human-Grade adhesives and anchors. Cable management is hella important and superglue and duct tape have evolved to have built in pest repellent.
The Helmet itself is pretty cliche cyberpunk, but it's definitely got gills for aqua or other liquid adventures. There's a mic and earpiece in it of course, often synced to the little drone so she can scout rooms without exposing herself. It's got a little projector as well, mostly used to throw schematics up in place while you work on a problem. (think Ironman).
People have mentioned Magnet boots in the tags and replies, and there's definitely something there. I joked about rollerskates because I LOVE the idea of a little human zooming around underfoot across the smooth floors of a ship. Katie probably has some highly grippy-yet-silent shoes that are closer to those a rock climber would wear; form fitting but not restraining, flexible but still supportive. You need to be able to FEEL your foot placement running across wires and climbing up cables. There's also some ship-rats who insist on running around barefoot. there always have been and there always will be.
I like the idea of the suit having instead of typical oxygen tanks, algae tanks of some kind? like the oxygen is coming from plants that are growing symbiotically from the wearer's waste. They would be small. I Don't like putting too much on the back of this kind of thing because humans need to roll to absorb impact, and even with lower gravity there's a lot of fall risk in this industry. That's one of the reasons as much as possible is on the toolbelt and only bulkier tools would be in the back pack. in emergency you can attach it to the drone and have that hover in a safe spot until you call retrieval. So maybe the plants would be in a living space and the air just circulates through the suit, then you hook up to the plant take to refresh overnight? We know that For sure there's lots of plants and algae tanks in the homes of humans living in space, but Brownies like Katie don't exactly settle well. She's got the wanderlust in her that her parents realized they couldn't conquer, so instead they bought the best gear they could.
That is why short of getting crushed she's not going to be very seriously injured; she could survive in the void for a short period of time in that thing, it's puncture and slash proof, basically anything but blunt force trauma is going to bounce right off. The suit is armor, and it's all about safety. grapples and ziplines and tools are all well and good, but they mean nothing if you get cut in half by a cord snapping or a pissed off space-bug.
Obviously phasers and blasters and all sorts of weapons exist. We love making every kind of science into weapons. Katie relies on what the galactic committee classifies as a "Laser cutter and defabricator" and what humans call "Laser Rifles." She's also got a bunch of tools for cutting through metal that would work on pretty much anything if she needed it too. One of the most important tools, though, would be the spray can- (What did you think i was going to say?) A little can nozzle that can be dipped in anything you use to write, and then sprays it on a surface. Humans communicate through ten foot tall letters out of necessity when talking to Giants, and Graffiti artists figured that shit out forever ago. Katie's model is fancy and can dye the ink different colors if needed. Spray color coding wires and parts is always helpful, especially working in unfamiliar systems.

Swedish researchers say they have developed a new method of recycling batteries from electric vehicles that allows recovery of 100 percent of the aluminum and 98 percent of the lithium.
Researchers at Chalmers University of Technology have presented the efficient way to recycle metals from spent batteries, and at the same time minimize the loss of valuable raw materials such as nickel, cobalt and manganese.
Furthermore, no expensive or harmful chemicals are required in the process because the researchers use oxalic acid—an organic acid that can be found in the plant kingdom.
“So far, no one has managed to find exactly the right conditions for separating this much lithium using oxalic acid, whilst also removing all the aluminum,” said Léa Rouquette, PhD student in the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. “Since all batteries contain aluminum, we need to be able to remove it without losing the other metals.”
In the Chalmers battery recycling lab, Rouquette and research leader Martina Petranikova showed how the new method works—taking the pulverized components in the form of a finely ground black powder and dissolving it in a transparent liquid – oxalic acid.
Rouquette produces both the powder and the liquid in something reminiscent of a kitchen mixer. Although it looks as easy as brewing coffee, the exact procedure is a unique scientific breakthrough. By fine-tuning temperature, concentration and time, the researchers came up with a new recipe for using oxalic acid, an environmentally friendly ingredient that can be found in plants such as rhubarb and spinach.
“We need alternatives to inorganic chemicals. One of the biggest bottlenecks in today’s processes is removing residual materials like aluminum,” says Martina Petranikova, Associate Professor at the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at Chalmers. “This is an innovative method that can offer the recycling industry new alternatives and help solve problems that hinder development.”
The aqueous-based recycling method is called hydrometallurgy. In traditional hydrometallurgy, all the metals in an EV battery cell are dissolved in an inorganic acid. Then, you remove the “impurities” such as aluminum and copper. Lastly, you can separately recover valuable metals such as cobalt, nickel, manganese and lithium. Even though the amount of residual aluminum and copper is small, it requires several purification steps and each step in this process can cause lithium loss.
With the new method, the researchers reverse the order and recover the lithium and aluminum first. Thus, they can reduce the waste of valuable metals needed to make new batteries.
The latter part of the process, in which the black mixture is filtered, is also reminiscent of brewing coffee. While aluminum and lithium end up in the liquid, the other metals are left in the “solids”. The next step in the process is to separate aluminum and lithium.
“Since the metals have very different properties, we don’t think it’ll be hard to separate them. Our method is a promising new route for battery recycling – a route that definitely warrants further exploration,” says Rouquette, who published her results in the journal Separation and Purification Technology.
COOL IDEA: Scientists Power Tesla on 9,400-mile Journey With Rolled-up Printed Solar Panels
Petranikova’s research group is involved in various collaborations with companies to develop electric car battery recycling and is a partner in major research and development projects, such as Volvo Cars’ and Northvolt’s Nybat project.
The research was funded by the Swedish Energy Agency, BASE Batteries Sweden, Vinnova.

Scientists from The Australian National University (ANU) are drawing inspiration from plants to develop new techniques to separate and extract valuable minerals, metals and nutrients from resource-rich wastewater.
The ANU researchers are adapting plant 'membrane separation mechanisms' so they can be embedded in new wastewater recycling technologies. This approach offers a sustainable solution to help manage the resources required for the world's food, energy and water security by providing a way to harvest, recycle and reuse valuable metal, mineral and nutrient resources from liquid wastes.
The technology could benefit a range of industries such as agriculture, aquaculture, desalination, battery recycling and mining. It could also help companies rethink their approach to how they deal with waste by creating a way to extract value from wastewater. The research also has implications for flood- and drought-prone areas across Australia.
It's estimated global wastewater contains three million metric tonnes of phosphorus, 16.6 million metric tonnes of nitrogen and 6.3 million metric tonnes of potassium. The recovery of these nutrients from wastewater could offset 13.4 per cent of global agricultural demand for these resources.

two separate things i've started but i don't know if i should finish fsdfjlks
one:
'don't be afraid to show your teeth,' your father had said, his hand caressing your face before the departure back to your homeworld, 'don't be afraid to use them.'
so you weren't. no matter the rage that brought you here, no matter the way you wanted to tear and rip and eat everything that hurt you -- your family included, you swallowed it down. let it burn in the pit of your belly like wildfire.
you had all the poise and proper of your house, how you were raised to be. a weapon instead of a woman. strategic mind, knowing the ins and outs of a blade. you could handle yourself, you've faced death and came back screaming and smiling.
but you didn't know if you could survive feyd-rautha harkonnen.
he'd been told to keep you alive, your houses' deal on the line. that didn't meant he had to keep you pristine. or keep you at all, you found.
so busy with his pets, his training, his na-baron duties, he sparsely spares you a glance.
...
two:
all glitter and gold, silver in the moonlight. cutting like a blade into the room where your deft fingers roam, across the bedsheets, over your stomach. shadows are sharper though, they always are, how they mold your bedchambers into a dungeon of your own making every single night.
breathe in, bleed out.
that's the motto you've been taught and that's the one you're sticking with, probably until the day you die. that might not be far off, you think, closing the corner faster than you can think to fear it. but harkonnens do not fear. and so, you don't think you can. you don't think you will.
on your nightstand, your knife glitters in the twilight, whispering that it knows all of your secrets. all of the pretty things you trace over your skin, all of the disgusting thoughts that cling to your skull in the wake of it. the liquid heat that cascades over you, a molten cage that cools and hurts.
today, you'd had another suitor. from a noble family that you were well aware of, from watching in the shadows and watching in the court. you'd seen his intentions long before they'd the chance to glint in his dark eyes. but you hadn't been the only one. you scarcely remember the words he'd managed before dark blood spilt from him like wine, like ink.
your father, standing over him, not bothering to wipe the blade clean with his own tunic.
harknonnens did not fear. they do not abide weakness. and that young noble was weak, he'd told you, he was unworthy. maybe that was true. you hadn't really cared to find out one way or another, not-so-secretly grateful that you'd yet to be married off like a broodmare.
the daughter of feyd-rautha harkonnen is highly sought after, of course.
far be it for you to know your father's will, but you know yours. it lies quietly, heavily, behind pretty dresses, sharp blades, and a mouth that can hurt and hurt and hurt. that's how you've been raised, to be an animal. to be a goddess.
trapped here, in your pantheon of industrial waste.
but being caged isn't so bad. it keeps you near the parts of the fortress that warm you, though they are always fleeting. at the foot of a throne or with arena sand in your teeth, you catch it whenever you can manage. easy enough to do when you've always been a shadow, always at its side.
and he's always let you.
his perfect creature, his masterpiece that he showcases more often than your brothers. his only daughter, his pretty little bird with clipped wings.

✦ Yin-Yang 陰陽 ✧
—Sypnosis; In which two ex-actors now models, Yin Mei and Yang Jungwon, who usually take single shoots offers, meet as opposites.
—Pairing; Korean Model Yjw x Chinese Model Fem!Reader (under the name of Yin Mei)
—Genre; Fluff, au, strangers to lovers, soulmates-ish, opposites attract, Chinese history related/mentions (personality, physic touch-ish.
—W.C.; 2,803 (I really think I should do longer stories TT)
—A/N; I am Chinese myself so I sort of got inspired by that and built up a story plot from it ^^ Hope you all enjoy!! Do leave a review of what you think of it, it’d be greatly appreciated! THIS IS NOT PROOFREAD!! I apologize if there's any mistakes!
Sitting down and sipping on your cup of coffee at the local cafe near your place, you read the online articles to, for the third time today, see those usual posts about yourself quitting the acting industry. Of course it wasn’t easy to leave it after having quite the successful career due to your famous company, but the mistreatment was getting too much and the diets that were imposed are getting out of hands. Noticing how even your fellow friends had to go through a lot, you all decided to drop out of the well known corporation.
‘Yin Mei, the Chinese acting prodigy, quitting so suddenly?!’ ‘Why did Mei drop out of the industry? She was one of my favourite actress!!’ ‘Yin Mei leaving acting already?’
All of the above are only some of the examples of what you’ve been seeing ever since you departed from GY entertainment. Distracted by the online texts infront of you, you felt a hot liquid dripping onto your lap which made you realize that your coffee was now on the table sideways with all its content emptied and now on you. Looking around, you noticed someone’s eyes on you from outside the glass windows and you managed to notice some of their features before they quickly ran away not wanting to attract trouble since they probably were the person who accidentally spilled your drink while you zoned out.
The person heavily reminded you of a cat because of their sharp eyes. They also had dark brown hair and wore a black mask, probably to hide their identity. You usually did the same so you wouldn’t get attention from all the paparazzis and the recent news.
Checking your phone, along with the time, you mentally told yourself that it was time to go to work.
Honestly, you could’ve taken a pause from the public’s eyes to avoid getting questions on your past occupation, but you wanted to do something and not just stay home all day even though that’s probably what most people in your situation would do. You love being in the entertainment industry and acting wasn’t the only option for you since you’re a natural. Modeling, singing, dancing were all skills you accomplished and mastered early on in only a few months by attending classes for each ones of them. However, the only one you were acknowledged for was acting which, according to your close friends who do know about everything you can do, is a waste, since if the public would know about all your talents, you’d probably gain even more fame. As mentioned, your passion for entertainment brought you to the decision of doing modeling under a different company hoping to not get mistreated but still be able to follow your dreams. A friend of yours, that is already signed up under that same agency, recommended going to Ebyh corporation. After thinking about it for a few days and enumerating the pros and cons, you decided to audition there as a model this time. Showing up there a few hours later had all of the staff member’s eyes wide open and mouths on the floor. You walked throughout the hallways and made your way to the office of the founder of Ebyh who already knew about the visit due to your friend that mentioned it to him. As you knocked on the door, you heard a “come in” from the inside of the room and opened the door to find a man that looked in his 50s sitting down along with another person that looked about your age.
Walking towards the middle aged man, you could feel the stare from the presence on your right. Right before being able to take a glance at them, the founder coughed signalling something to the other guy which made him leave instantly.
“Welcome to Ebyh corporation, my name is Bang Si Hyuk. We’re glad to have a talent like yours join our company.” He started, smiling at you kindly.
“Thank you for having me.” You replied at his compliment.
“So, I suppose you’d like to become an actress-”
“Actually, I’m auditioning to become a model instead. I’m afraid that I will not take any acting offers if that’s what made you instantly call me here.” You cut what he was about to say with a stern voice.
Still under slight shock, he thought for a moment about having you partake a different route than what he thought and if you were really skilled enough to be a model. He wouldn’t want to invest in someone for no reasons. Of course he believes in your overall skills and appreciates everything you’ve shown to the audience so far, but he won’t just let you become a model like that without knowing if your success is close to guaranteed. Which is why he thought of an idea.
“To make sure that you truly are skilled in modelling aswell, I’ll train you by giving you a few offers to start off and depending on where it’ll lead you to, we’ll make you sign an official contract with us so you can officially be apart of Ebyh corp.” He proposed and without hesitation, you gratefully accepted.
“Here’s the first shoot you’ll have to attend. Since you’re already quite famous, I’ve gotten a few requests from well known brands.” Mr. Bang said as he gave you the detailed informations and where the photoshoot will be taken.
A few days later
As you came out of the building where was located your 5th photo session, you immediately went back to your company and headed to Si Hyuk’s office. Opening the door, after knocking a few times and hearing the usual ‘come in!’ from inside, you saw the familiar man that you had seen previously along with the owner of the office chatting together. You stood there until the older man spoke.
“Mei, I’d like to introduce you to a partner that you’ll be matched up with for your next task.” He said directing my sight to the guy next to him. “Here’s one of our best male models, Yang Jungwon.”
Taking a good look at the fellow model, you could definitely understand why he was working under this industry. He had somewhat familiar cat eyes and brown hair. You couldn’t really remember who or where, but you knew that you’ve already seen him before.
“Hey um… do I know you by any chance?” You asked confused.
He looked at you then had the same confused expression as yours till realization hit him.
He small gasped and put one of his hand over his mouth. Then he nervously spoke. “Ah… well I think, correct me if I’m wrong, that I’m the person who may have ACCIDENTALLY hit your drink at the cafe…?”
You tapped your chin looking up a few times before remembering the scene.
“Oooooh you were that guyyy…” you said with your mouth forming an ‘o’ shape.
“Well looks like you two have already met…” Bang Si Hyuk said as he looked at the both of you. “That’ll make it easier then because you both will have to do a duo shoot together. I already talked about it with Jungwon and he agreed so if you don’t mind.”
You looked uncertain since the person before you was still a stranger and you both barely talked before. As you thought of the situation, Si Hyuk broke the silence and added. “If you do that offer, I’ll allow you to sign a contract with Ebyh corporation.”
You smiled cheekily. “Well then, you got your deal old man!”
Jungwon looked at you and Mr bang’s interactions. To then smile and chuckle lightly making his dimples visible.
When you spun your head around as you heard the faint laugh, you could feel heat rising up to your face. Looking away in embarrassment, not wanting to show it to the two men, they looked at you confusingly and just shrugged it off to talk about the upcoming duo project between you and the new acquaintance you just made.
Later when you all finished talking, well mostly them and not you since you're quite introverted unlike that other guy Jungwon, you went back to your place to eat diner. When you were done eating, you laid down on your bed and looked up your coworker for your next shoot which is tomorrow.
'Yang Jungwon' you typed on the search bar to find a lot of articles and profiles about him. You found out a few things about him. For example, he has a very outgoing personality, he's extroverted, sociable and carefree. Of course there were other information like his physical appearance and things such as his favorite color, etc. Reading a few things and watching a few interviews about him made you think that you both were polar opposites. You also wondered what theme you'd have to demonstrate with Jungwon as you drifted to sleep.
+++
This morning went by like usual. Waking up, eating breakfast, the usual routine. Now, you were standing infront of the two men, yet again, to attend your photoshoot.
As you sat down in the car with Jungwon facing you and Bang Si Hyuk in the front seats with your manager, your coworker decided to initiate a conversation. Otherwise, from Jungwon's perspective, the way to go would feel long and boring. The awkward tension made him want to say something which he did.
"Are you excited for the shoot?" he asked leaning forwards as he looked at you.
You paused, looking back at him calmly, contrary to him, you were leaning backwards with your arms and legs crossed.
"Yeah, I mean after this I'll finally be able to become a model under Ebyh corporation." you replied unwantingly being dry.
He nods awkwardly. "That's great..."
You reply a quick 'yeah' and instead of continuing the conversation, you just look out the window. Your introverted side showing itself while Jungwon sat there wanting to say something.
'Well that didn't go as planned..' thought Jungwon as he sighed.
The both of you barely exchanged any words for the rest of the way there. Though you did feel his stare on you from times to times.
+++
When you arrived and got out of the vehicule, the personnel and your work partner entered the building. You all followed the guide to the destined set. Once you entered the room, you saw a few props along with the cameras and the necessary materials. A man with jet black glasses and hair stood there. He smiled as he looked at us to then talk to Ebyh's chairman. While they talked, a woman came up to you and told you to go change which was also requested to Jungwon.
As you came out of the changing room, all eyes were on the both of you. Some of the females exchanged glances as they whispered looking at the man you were going to work with while some guys had their jaws dropped on the floor.
You even heard some comments, of course, some about your previous career, but also some about you and Jungwon's relationship. Some of the girls shot daggers at you with their glares when your back was facing them which your coworker noticed and just chuckled off. The cameraman that was talking to Si Hyuk came up to you both and asked you to go sit on the decorative couch. You had to strike a few poses solo and so did Jungwon until it was time for the duo poses at the end. You personally thought that it'd be some normal postures and so did the he but when you saw the reference picture from the camera guy, your eyes and mouth went agape, and so did his. To describe it, it's something like Jungwon laying down horizontally on the sofa with his head on the arm-rester, while you had to sit down on the lower elevation, somewhat diagonally, with your head lying on his chest.
"Um- I'm sorry but isn't that too much? " you said after a few seconds of looking at the picture. Truth is, you actually didn't mind, but you didn't want to make our partner uncomfortable.
"Y-yeah she's right..." said Jungwon embarassed.
The photoshoot leader then replied with a confirmation of whether yes or no we wanted to do the shoot. Since you couldn't refuse due to the offer from the chairman, you had to accept.
"fine, I'll do it." you replied looking away thinking that either way was okay with you.
You could feel Jungwon's eyes on you, however you couldn't tell what his expression meant. Well he doesn't have a choice, no way you’re declining the offer. You have to get in the industry.
You both went towards the canape. Jungwon was looking down while you walked forward.
"You can lay down and we can get this over with." you said wanting to make this quick.
He raised his head and he looked at you. He nodded shyly and laid down on the couch. You sat on the slightly elevated floor, and gently put your head on his chest just like the reference.
You both looked at the camera and acted as natural as possible.
Though the both of our hearts were beating like crazy.
As you got up to look at your shoot partner, you could see the slight tint of pink under his makeup. You smiled which he returned sheepishly.
"Good!" Said the camera person. "nice work you two."
"thank you" you both said in unison.
Then a girl that looked a bit younger came up to you with a serious look on her face.
"Are you guys dating?" she asked pouting.
You shook your head no as you felt your blood rise up to your cheeks.
"of course not, why would you think that?" you ask trying to keep composure. Blushing was never your thing because of your rather calm and composed personality, and even your few close friends thought that it was unusual, considering the fact that you've never had a boyfriend ever since high school. You were beautiful. Of course you are, but the fact that you didn't really talk to anyone or made any effort to socialize made it hard for any guys to approach you since they didn't think that even if they did ask you out, you'd reply positively. You were also quite naive when it came to that so when they were very transparent with their feelings, you could barely notice the signs they gave you.
Again, you found yourself thinking about how, unlike you, Jungwon is more of the popular type and probably played the role of the school president or something when he was in high school. And as you predicted, it was infact true.
"I mean you both seemed quite close, but I'm glad honestly!" the girl replied grinning. "that means I still have a chance with him!"
"yeah right..." you thought out loud scoffing.
She looked at you confusingly. "What was that?"
'oh shit'
"Nothing, don't worry about it." you said not wanting any unwanted attention on you both.
"I'm still here by the way?" the man next to you said.
The girl before you smiled widely once she looked at him.
"Ah, yes Jungwon! Sorry about that" she giggled and walked away.
"tsk who does she think she is..." you muttered under your breath.
Jungwon looked at you and chuckled warmly. "I'm glad that we did this shoot together Mei." he said.
"Likewise, it was a pleasure." you bowed.
Still looking down, you saw a phone appearing under your face.
"Hm?"
"Do you mind giving me your number?" he asked smiling with his dimples showing which made your heart melt.
"O-oh... yeah sure!" you took his phone and inserted your contact infos under the name 'Yin Mei'.
As he took it back, he walked away heading towards the door. He flashed you a smile again and mouthed a 'thank you'.
+++
When you were back home, you received a text from unknown.
It was Jungwon.
You obviously replied back a 'hey' and then changed his name to 'Yang :)'.
At the other side of the phone, he did the same and changed it to 'Yin :)'.
Coincidences huh? Opposites yet so similar...
THE END!!

Hydrovac Excavation: A Sustainable Approach to Subsurface Utility Projects
In the realm of construction, the impact on the environment is a significant concern. The integration of environmental sustainability technology is pivotal in mitigating this impact while maintaining cost-effectiveness in debris removal. Project Sustainability Management (PSM) is becoming increasingly relevant in this context. PSM encompasses the planning, monitoring, and control of project delivery and support processes, taking into account environmental, economic, and social factors throughout the project's lifecycle. One key aspect of this is the sustainable management of excavated materials, which can be repurposed, thereby reducing waste.
Aussie Hydro-Vac Services stands at the forefront of environmental sustainability. The company is renowned in the vacuum excavation, drain cleaning, and cable location sectors, adhering to ethical operating and contractual practices. By incorporating environmental sustainability technology, Aussie Hydro-Vac Services effectively addresses complex project issues and crisis situations.
Enhancing Safety in Exposing Subsurface Infrastructure
The construction industry is increasingly adopting environmentally sustainable practices, particularly in projects involving sensitive subsurface utilities. Hydrovac excavation plays a crucial role in this shift. This technique transforms soil into a slurry, which is then easily suctioned and vacuumed into a tank. Compared to traditional mechanical digging methods, hydrovac excavation is safer, reducing the risk of cave-ins and other hazards associated with conventional excavation.
Hydrovac excavation employs a specialised vehicle equipped with a hose or wand. This wand injects water under pressure into the soil, breaking it up and transforming it into a slurry. The slurry is then vacuumed into a tank attached to the vehicle, keeping the worksite clean and orderly.
Precision and Control in Urban Environments
Hydrovac excavation is particularly useful in urban settings where precision and minimal impact are essential. It offers greater directional control, allowing technicians to work more accurately, especially near underground utilities. The technique is faster than traditional digging, minimising disruption in densely populated areas. Hydrovac excavation is ideal for city installations, sewer repairs, and plumbing, among other applications.
Environmental Sustainability in Project Management
Aussie Hydro-Vac Services leverages environmental sustainability best practices in project management, offering competitive advantages and economic benefits. The company utilises hydrovac excavation techniques with vehicles designed for non-destructive methods. This approach is particularly effective around sensitive infrastructure, offering a safe and efficient process.
State-of-the-Art Equipment and Infrastructure
Aussie Hydro-Vac Services is committed to sustainable environmental project management, promoting the judicious use of natural resources. The company's service range includes vacuum loading, drain and culvert cleaning, liquid and solid waste disposal, non-destructive digging, emergency response, and more. Thoughts on FMA: The Final Alchemy
tl;dr - All the live-action FMA movies suck like an industrial-grade vacuum cleaner, and watching them will only not be a waste of your time if you do so with friends who are already familiar with FMA so you can have fun bashing them with each other. Still, this one managed to suck ever so slightly less than the previous one...maybe???
Elaborating slightly on the notes I took while watching, here are my thoughts:
I can't get over how unbelievably stupid and nonsensical the title is! "ThE fInAl AlChEmY" What does that even mean? Not "The Final Transmutation," oh no; we can't make the title be an actual reference to a line Ed actually says in the original ("the last transmutation of the Full Metal Alchemist" or however it's worded). "The Final Alchemy." I ask you -_-
There were so many scenes where they didn't play any music at all, and it was super awkward! What kind of creative choice is that? Instead of it being used to make a statement or ramp up tension or whatever usual reasons people have for not putting music in, it just came across like they forgot to add any music in some scenes.
What on earth is up with Raven's actor? He was overacting so much, it was distracting - especially when contrasted with Mustang's complete lack of expression, lol. It's like Raven's actor just saw that one panel of Raven guffawing and decided that was his entire character. Like...there's overacting like some of the villains in the Rurouni Kenshin movies...and then there's this. Super weird and out of place.
Not that I'm surprised at all, but the CG looked really bad for the most part in this movie. By far the worst was Sloth, though. I can't remember when the last time was I've seen something that bad x.x Not only did it look super fake, it just looked...really low-quality even compared to some of the other stuff in this movie, like a child's scribble next to an art student's painting. All of the effects around Sloth (like broken pillars and crumbling walls) looked terrible and fake too, like he was infecting the entire VFX team with his mediocrity or something.
But on the flipside, I actually thought the effect of Ed, Ling, and Envy flaking away as they went through the Portal of Truth was really good! Guess that's where all their VFX budget went.
Al's actor was nowhere near emaciated enough. Sure, they didn't go into the whole thing about Ed eating and sleeping his share, and I get that they wouldn't want to make the actor starve himself or anything...but still. Just sayin'. Also...he had zero emotion, even after soul and body were reunited. What's up with that?
And speaking of which, just like in the other two movies, they hardly had Al do anything at all, nor did most of the other characters act like they cared about him much at all - not even Ed most of the time. If I didn't have such a wealth of other versions of this wonderful character, I'd probably think he was super boring. Which is a crime, I tell you! He's one of my favorite characters ever!
So many of the sets were so empty. You could really tell when they were using greenscreens.
When they showed Greed inside Ling's head, they made him blue??? When it's supposed to be depicting the torrent of souls that is a Philosopher's Stone, and the Stones are red??? Just...why?
Oh, also...when the Stones were in a liquid form, it totally looked like sweet-and-sour sauce you get from a Chinese restaurant ^^' It was like...almost pink! Weird. I always assumed the Stones were supposed to look red like blood.
Yet again, the way they messed around with the timeline is paying dividends of confusion in this movie. Because they shoved all of Scar's character arc into the second movie, and everybody's okay with him now, they have him just come out and show Ed and Al his brother's research notes, which is how they find out about the country-wide transmutation circle, and only after that discovery does Ed decide to go to Briggs. Or how about Greed just immediately deciding to leave Father practically the minute Ling accepts him? And Father doesn't do anything about it? And later on, Greed joins up with them for literally no reason other than "lol I'm a rebel," because there was nothing about Devil's Nest or the previous Greed, so he didn't have the realization that Wrath killed his friends.
Wait. They didn't do Devil's Nest, did they? They didn't do Devil's Nest. THEY DIDN'T DO DEVIL'S NEST HOW DO YOU MESS UP THIS BADLY ALDKGFJSLKDGJSLDKGJSDKLGF
Also, because they never bothered to put Yoki into these movies, Mei's brainwave for the secrets within the notes make waaaaaay less sense. Sure, you could say her figuring it out because Yoki sneezed is too convenient, but she had even less reason to think along those lines in this movie. Oh, and they never even tried to explain why she's the only one reading the notes, and Ed and Al can't.
Buccaneer's head looks just as lumpy and bulbous as Armstrong's. Why didn't they just shave these actors' heads instead of slapping a bald cap on top of their hairy heads, or whatever they did? It would have looked a million times better.
Okay, Olivier is practically perfect in every way. A+ casting job for once. She looks about as natural as a blonde Japanese woman can, and she gets across the disdain, poise, and hyper-competence of the character really well.
They never explained why Ed can't speak freely with Olivier about the Homunculi, etc. The revelation that Winry's being used as a hostage isn't revealed yet when Ed first shows up, and Raven's not there yet, so why did they have to go to the trouble of going into the underground tunnel to talk? Yet another example of the film creators trying to condense and simplify while still keeping in iconic moments from the anime, but showing a glaring lack of understanding of why those moments happened the way they did. Because now you've got a bunch of disjointed scenes that are supposed to be iconic, but will make no sense unless you already know the story.
Speaking of which...why did Ed go to Briggs in the first place? Because he already knows about the country-wide transmutation circle at this point, his stated purpose is to stop them from carving the last crest of blood they need at Briggs and completing the circle. And yet...the crest gets carved anyway, and Ed just sort of...leaves? Without much, if any, protest? At first I thought they were going to do the whole Briggs arc because they wanted to show what I would definitely classify as an iconic moment: Ed getting impaled. But they never did that scene at all! Kimbley is absent from this movie, so there's no scheme to get Winry away from him, Raven disappears as soon as he shows up (yeah, they don't even do the memorable scene of Olivier stabbing him and shoving him into setting concrete), so they don't even need to get Winry away from him, there are no chimeras (probably because it would be quite taxing on the budget, which I kind of understand), and they've already covered the whole Winry-forgives-Scar scene in the previous movie, so I guess they decided there was no way to work in Ed falling down a mine shaft, getting impaled, and then closing his own wound by using his own soul as a Philosopher's Stone. Nope, instead they just abruptly shift to a goodbye scene between Ed and Winry whose dark hair still bugs the heck out of me whyyyyyyy is she special like that.
Wait, let me reiterate: Kimbley is absent from this movie. I actually don't remember if he was in the second movie or not (it was that forgettable if he was). Yeah, they just decided that one of the most interesting and memorable characters from FMA didn't need to be in their movie. Besides the part I mentioned above, Kimbley's absence also throws a wrench into a very important part farther down the road: Ed defeating Pride. In the original, Pride eats Kimbley to take advantage of the extra souls he has in his Philosopher's Stones, but because he absorbed such a strong, rebellious soul, Kimbley is actually able to help Ed overpower Pride in the end. This is a very important factor in Pride's defeat, because he looks down on humans, while Kimbley points out that the way he's acting is actually dishonorable. "You are nothing to be proud of," I think is how he puts it. If you consider the thematic implications of the Homunculi and how each one dies, you'll realize that this is the only way Pride could be defeated, because Homunculi are defeated by their opposites. But then, I don't think the people who wrote these movies would recognize a theme if it smacked them in the face. Many of the events are the same in these movies as they are in the original, but they're stripped of any subtlety or significance.
Oh, also Pride's death is much stupider in this movie because it looks like he just stands there and lets Ed do it, rather than it being an actual fight with the shadow-spikes and everything, and Ed getting the drop on him because he knows what it's like to be shorter than his opponent....
Okay, but one thing I will say in favor of this movie is that Ryosuke Yamada was by far the best actor in the whole cast. He captured the various sides of Ed's character, and there were far fewer moments where it felt like he was an actor on a stage than anybody else. I believed him. I've thought that in both of the previous movies, but I don't think I realized just how good of an actor he was until this installment. Because he doesn't just have to play Ed. He also has to play teenage Hohenheim in the flashback, and Father's final form on the Promised Day. And in both instances, Ryosuke Yamada utterly killed it. He didn't just do a good job of delivering the lines with appropriate emotion and expression. He also made the characters feel like completely different people. Everything, down to his stance and the way he talked, was different! And I could tell that he'd studied the way Seiyo Uchino had done his performances as both Hohenheim and Father, and was trying to match them in his own performance. That was so cool to see. I've never seen Ryosuke Yamada in anything else, but now I kinda want to.
Oh, and while we're praising the cast, Kokoro Terada did such a good job as Pride! It's a tall order to ask such a young kid to act like such a creepy monster, but he did an excellent job. That kid's got a future in acting for sure.
They cut out soooooo many of the best scenes about Mustang and his team, and what they didn't cut out was so rushed and just gutted of all emotion T_T They didn't even bother taking the team away from him, which leaves the Homunculi looking a bit stupid and lax. Because the whole fight with Lust went down differently (in the first movie a;ldkjfa;dlskf;sdlkfj DX), Havoc isn't even paralyzed! I never thought I would be upset that he didn't get paralyzed! But because we don't go into any of that, a huge chunk of character development is just gone completely. And though they did do the whole showdown with Envy, which is one of my absolute favorite parts of the story, it was taken out at the knees by the actors being terrible and emotionless. Oh, and the coup is introduced very abruptly and just as abruptly forgotten about, and there's nothing about Mrs. Bradley. And the moment with Hawkeye's neck getting sliced open? Blink and you miss it. Mustang barely reacts, and they don't even use Hawkeye's life being threatened as a way to try to coerce him to do human transmutation! Hawkeye doesn't give him the signal with her eyes, Mei doesn't close up the wound...I honestly have no idea why they bothered wounding her at all.
They already did the zombie things in the first movie (ad;lkjfgda;slkjg;sdklfj;dskfl), so they show up in one scene in this movie, have little to no impact because we've already seen them, and then are never heard from again. What even.
Why in the name of Flamel did they wait the entire movie to reveal that Miles is part Ishbalan? Why did they bother revealing that at all? They literally could have just said they were going to help Scar rebuild Ishbal, and left it at that, instead of having Miles dramatically take off his sunglasses and make the audience try to figure out why because it's not immediately obvious that his eyes are red because they made the color much duller than it is in animation and a;lkdjfg;ladkjhg;dlksgjlsdgj;ldksfjdslg
Oh, and you wanna know what the biggest kick in the teeth is? THEY DIDN'T EVEN HEAL MUSTANG'S EYES. Marcoh isn't in this movie - I can't remember if he died or what in the first movie, and can't be bothered to check - so there's no one to use the Stone on him. So Mustang's storyline in the movie ends with Hawkeye saying, "Maybe we'll find a way to heal your eyes somehow." Maybe. MAYBE?! -_-
So yeah. To sum up, this is a terrible movie and an even worse adaptation. I didn't think it was possible to take such a phenomenally good story and butcher it this badly. FMA is one of my very favorite stories of all time, and even though I've read and watched it more times than I can count, the fight scenes and tense moments still grab me to this day. But I kept on finding myself bored while watching this movie, and checking to see how much time was left. I never thought I would be bored watching the Briggs soldiers or the Armstrong siblings fight Sloth, or Wrath and Scar duking it out, or the last stand against Father.
But here we are.
