A new marriage law set to go into force in Thailand on Thursday will grant full equality to same-sex couples, including legal, financial and medical rights. Only two other places in Asia — Nepal and Taiwan — have similar laws in place.

The struggle for marriage equality in Thailand has lasted decades.

Plus and Gaye, a lesbian couple who preferred not to give their full names, told DW that the new law "gives us the courage to look toward a future beyond relationships."

After being together for nearly 20 years, they are now eligible for tax deductions, health care consent and joint property management — rights that were previously reserved for heterosexual couples. 

The bill grants "basic human rights to the LGBTQ community," said Mookdapa Yangyuenpradorn, human rights associate for Fortify Rights.

But she questions whether the law will be implemented properly.

"Officials need to be informed and trained to avoid discrimination," Yangyuenpradorn said, "whether it is when the couples register their marriage, sign medical consent forms or adoption papers."

It is also telling that gender-specific words, such as "husbands," "wives," "men" and "women," have been replaced with gender-neutral terms, but lawmakers did not include the word "parent" in addition to "father and mother."

What's next after Thailand's marriage equality bill?

Thailand has long been hailed as a haven for LGBTQ+ people. But Yangyuenpradorn doubts the country will build on the momentum of its marriage equality law.

"When the marriage equality bill was discussed in public, some would say: 'They [same-sex couples] just want to love each other, leave them be,'" Yangyuenpradorn said.

If the focus shifts to things like the gender recognition bill, which would allow people to obtain legal documents reflecting their gender identity, then it becomes apparent that "transphobic attitudes still exist."

"Some people are against allowing the LGBTQ community the option to amend gender markers due to entrenched fears of (gender) identity falsification," Yangyuenpradorn said.

Vietnam: Population backs marriage equality, laws lag behind

Support for same-sex marriage varies across southern Asian.

A 2023 Pew Research Center survey found that 65% of people in Vietnam are in favor of allowing same-sex couples to marry — more than anywhere else in Southeast Asia. 

Despite this level of public support, same-sex marriage seems a long way away in Vietnam. The country only stopped defining being gay, bisexual or transgender as an "illness" in 2022.

The current Vietnamese Law on Marriage and Family was amended in 2014 to allow for symbolic weddings that are not legally recognized. The law was due to be revised in either 2024 or 2025, yet it is nowhere to be found on the parliament's legislative schedule. Backers of same-sex marriage also face an uphill legal battle in Singapore. In November 2022, the parliament overturned a law that criminalized sex between men, but the lawmakers also amended the constitution to block full marriage equality.

LGBTQ+ people tread carefully in Muslim-majority nations

Support for same-sex marriage in Muslim-majority Malaysia and Indonesia is the lowest in the region, with only 17% and 5% of survey respondents in favor, respectively. "Muslims report the lowest support for same-sex marriage of any religious group in any place surveyed," according to the Pew Research Center.

LGBTQ+ communities face diverse issues within Muslim-majority nations, as well. Same-sex relations are not outlawed in Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim-majority country, except in Aceh province, where Sharia law is enforced.

"It is possible to live (closeted) lives in Muslim communities [in Indonesia], provided that people are extra careful," Dede Oetomo, a campaigner for LGBTQ rights in the archipelago, told DW.

In general terms, Oetomo said, "it is a war out there."

"From time to time, there is news of raids of gay gatherings or venues, disruption of pageants, or persecution of individuals by family or community members, sometimes by state law enforcement people," Oetomo said.

Brunei's laws call for stoning of gay men

Oetomo said there were reasons for hope — the number of faith leaders and communities supporting LGBTQ+ causes is increasing, which has helped introduce "a counternarrative of religious discourse."

"In some Eastern Indonesian cities," Oetomo said, "there is an attempt by LGBTQ organizations and intersectional allies to have anti-discrimination local ordinances, with some success in Ambon and Kupang."

Despite more people being in favor of same-sex marriage in Malaysia than in Indonesia

, there is still a legal ban on homosexuality in Malaysia, with violations punishable by a 20-year prison term. In 2023, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said Malaysia would never recognize LGBTQ+ rights.

But nowhere in Southeast Asia is the intolerance as severe as in Brunei. It is one of 11 countries in the world that still has the death penalty for homosexuality. In 2019, Brunei introduced new laws that make sex between men punishable by stoning to death, although this was suspended after international backlash.

Philippines, Singapore still struggle with laws

Across the Philippines, regional authorities have passed a slew of local measures to protect LGBTQ+ communities from discrimination.

But, at the national level, an anti-discrimination bill based on sexual orientation, gender identity, and expression is still blocked after more than two decades of debate in parliament.

Meanwhile, in Singapore, the government recently passed its first workplace anti-discrimination law, which is expected to come into effect in 2026 or 2027. However, the bill does not cover discrimination over sexual orientation and gender identity.

Andrew, a 30-year-old Singaporean who asked that his full name not be used, told DW that this is a "massive" missed opportunity to discuss gender and sexuality issues and shift attitudes toward the LGBTQ+ community in the wealthy island state. He said removing media censorship of positive or neutral LGBTQ+ content would help move the nation toward more acceptance.

"It is disheartening to see that Singapore media still has not changed over the years," Andrew said, adding that gay characters are portrayed as "perverts or mentally disturbed."

"I think that just really fits the whole narrative that people in the LGBTQ community aren't good for society because that's what people see and that is what the older generation would then internalize," Andrew said.

We know all the secrets surrounding June 1983, but we don't know everything leading up to that month.

Everything begins at some point likely around the mid 1950s. Before she was Miyo Takano, she was Miyoko Tanashi. She was scared of horror stories, loved collecting the flags that came with her kids meals, and loved her parents very much.

I cannot figure out what the flag between Canada and Greece is. At first, I thought it was the Czech Republic, but the shading on this image doesn't match the Czech colors at all. And it's backward too. There's also a flag in the top right corner that is very hidden. All I can tell is it has white on the bottom. My guess is it might be Indonesia. I was also considering Estonia, but Estonia was under Soviet rule at this time and it was illegal to fly the Estonian flag.

I was really hoping the Mexican and South African flags might be in here.

You're placing a curse on your kid if you tell them god will give them happiness if they're good. You're telling them it is their fault when life happens and things fall apart. And almost as if on cue, Miyoko's life falls apart on the same day her father told her that. The only thing you could say she did wrong was she didn't hear her father when he called out to her.

Mr Tanashi losing his right hand in the train derailment is just twisting the knife. It's not enough that Miyoko's mother died in the accident and that she saw her father die. She's also denied one final headpat before he dies.

I want to try being fair to the social workers working on Miyoko's case. This is the mid 1950s. World War II ended at most a decade ago. Around 4% of Japan's population was killed in the war. Two cities were utterly destroyed, and there's the general economic collapse that comes from long-term military action.

No matter how much they may want to help, resources in this environment are stretched thin. Trying to find and contact a single person with no leads would likely be difficult today. It would be a herculean task in the 1950s.

And it's also this kind of scenario that lets an institution like the one Miyoko was sent to to exist. Those social workers were genuinely clueless about how that orphanage mistreats the children brought to it. They genuinely think they're providing the best possible solution given the situation, and the head of the orphanage knows how to put on a kindly face in front of them.

I genuinely don't know if the panel of the man patting Miyoko's head is real or her imagination. Him giving her even the slightest kindness is so out of character. And Miyoko grew up in the exact opposite of an abusive home. Her instinct when seeing someone raise their hand to her is expecting kindness and being utterly confused when she's hit instead.

I love and hate how that first slap to Miyoko is so perfectly executed. A full page image on the right half of the page spread. You just turn the page and see Miyoko violently slapped across the face. It's as sudden to us as it is to her. And right before it happens, the chapter implied that there is hope for her despite everything that's happened. But that one slap knocks the hope out of her and us.

childhood (known as the 'egg' part of kanade) ;; when kanade was a kid, they used to be extremely happy and cheerful. they get good grades a lot back in elementary school. but, they were never taught to be polite nor how to deal with their parents, so they just cry and cry to express emotions. when they were in elementary school, they were extremely extroverted and constantly talks to everyone, but they secretly (but they didnt know) felt extremely lonely. thats why they talk a lot to people. in fourth grade, kanade discovered the internet and found a bunch of friends online, they were extremely happy to greet them everyday. but secretly, the internet was the only coping mechanism thay could use to escape from reality. but because of this, they depend on the internet a lot and found out a lot about the nasty stuff. because they found out their parents were abusive through research, they started distancing away from their own family to focus online.

middle school (known as the 'larva/caterpillar' part of kanade) ;; kanades parents decide to move to japan from indonesia. after several months, their parents left to work in china. leaving kanade and their brother in one home. kanade attended a middle school in japan. but because they were affected by the online, they slowly became a seeker for attention to make up for the loneliness they felt. they tend to physically hurt themself often for someone to come help them, which they enjoyed feeling like someone cares about them. kanade met a girl in second year and they became best friends ever since. they often went to lunch together and talk to eachother and joke with eachother.

middle school incident, (known as the 'crysalis' part of kanade) ;; however, one day, the girl invited them to visit a train station. kanade was confused, but complied anyway. when kanade arrived, they saw the girl on the train tracks, trying to get hit. kanade cried and begged for the girl to stay, but it was too late. the girl had completely killed herself. kanade felt extremely guilty and blames how they couldnt properly strategize their own words to hit them. soon, rumors by kanades classmates spread around saying that 'kanade was the one who drove the girl to suicide'. it led the whole school to distance away from kanade and even have the guidance counselor believe it. everyone completely gossiped about kanade, and because of that, kanade never went back to middlr school until they graduated.

high school / current (known as the 'butterfly' part of kanade) the first reason why kanade became an idol is because they wanted attention and they knew that they'll be 'number one' in atleast one of the peoples hearts, but they started enjoying being one. kanade is a solo idol in a unit named 'morphosis', a unit within the rhythm link agency. kanade has grown into being socially distant, socially anxious, and lonely. they have never smiled ever since the middle school. though, they have shown to be extremely childish, energetic, and extremely emotional underneath that. they also have a hard time keeping thay distant exterior. the only reason why they kept that exterior is to not get attached again. but they felt extremely lonely as a negative side effect. they compose their own songs (which are centered around their emotions) and they have an obsession with seaweed flavored snacks. kanade has .. never shone as bright as they do currently. also kanade is an extreme fan of ra*bits and valkryie, often being jealous of them too. they have an omanjuu and plushies of valkryie and ra*bits in their room. they have a dog named 'momo' who they take care of lots. theyre also good with taking care of their cousins. theyre currently in the dorm with nazuna, leo, and natsume. but because kanade doesnt fit in very well, (natsuleonazus hair is warm colors (red orange yellow), while kanades hair is black.) they usually sleep in their home or the ritsu + mika dorm

9) Baticano (2023, Stillz)

Imagine my surprise when I turn my TV and one of the best modern homages to German Expressionism and 30's-50's Western studio horror, starring Bad Bunny as Nosferatu and Steve Buscemi as a "mad scientist." The depths of the black parts of the screen alone... pure! black! contrast! Not the telltale flat digital black-gray!

Benito may be no Max Schreck, but Stillz was on a roll for the rapper's videos last year, and now I feel less... embarrassed? that I was repeatedly hypnotized by the hyper-Coachella vibes of the "Where She Goes" video... Stillz has skills.

Or at least knows how to shoot what I like.

Runners-up are many, but I want to highlight:

a) a small but solid run of horror viewing in October, from the adrenaline of As Above So Below to all the subtext James Whale snuck into The Old Dark House. Doctor Jekyll and Sister Hyde should be counted as one of the best Hammer horrors imo. On the borders of the horror were Mother Joan of the Angels, La Llorona, and the more witchy fantasy The Five Devils.

b) sidestep into Indonesia with May the Devil Take You, which may not be at the tip top levels of Impetigore but still a uniquely wild ride. Headshot sets standards on the action side, and you can definitely spot Gareth Evans' Indonesian industry training in his English folk-action-horror foray Apostle.

YSEALI Seeds: SETARA Project – The Equality for Criminal Children

About the Project

SETARA Project stands for “Sekolah Tahanan Penjara Anak” which is an educational platform specifically designed for children who are incarcerated with the aim of enhancing their soft skills and fostering literacy. The project is being conducted in an institution which serves as a detention center for children in the Bengkulu Province of Indonesia. This project is divided into 2 programs. First, the soft skills improvement program through insight and self-motivation, teaching two languages (English and Arabic), and improving moral values through religious activities. Second, fostering literacy through the creation of a library in the children detention center by providing books and training librarians as the administrators of the library.

Why do you care about this specific topic/issue?

This detention center has already rehabilitated 92 children. Most of them are children who committed crimes due to environmental influences and a lack of attention from their closest family. These days, juvenile detention centers are focused on counseling and formal education without focusing on soft skills, moral values and literacy, even though soft skills and literacy are important for their successful reintegration into society following their release. Furthermore, most of these children were expelled from school and deemed as social outcasts. Therefore, it is our aim to advocate for educational equality, ensuring that they receive a comparable education to other children their age.

Why did you decide to start this project?

Our project is the sequel of a project that was completed at a correction facility in Rejang Lebong, Bengkulu, Indonesia in 2018. Essentially, we believe there are four reasons why this project should be continued. Firstly, there is no program related to improving soft skills and literacy at the detention center in the Bengkulu province. Second, the previous project was successful and widely praised by the local governments, so this needs to be continued at the province level with wider objectives. Third, the previous project was held in the public prison, not in the children detention center, so the outcomes are less effective for the children. Lastly, we believe children who are in the children detention center have the right to learn equally.

What are your goals for this project?

Our goal is to support the fight for equality of education and fostering literacy for children in detention centers so that they can compete globally with the help of skills from the classes we provide. The following are the specific goals we aim to achieve based on our activities:

Inspirative Class: Raising inspiration that is hampered in the residents of the children detention center. 

Religion Class: Encouraging the children of the detention center to always be mindful of God as the Lord of nature and the practice of obeying his rules.

Worship Practices Class: Assisting children of the detention center in practicing the pillars of worship required in their religion.

Language Class: Introducing foreign languages to children of the detention center so that they will be able to compete in the global world after serving their detention.

Fostering Literacy: Establishing a library in the children's detention environment as a facility for children to explore more knowledge through books.

How will YSEALI Seeds help you achieve your goals?

To support the children struggling for equal rights, we need funds to buy books and other library equipment to promote literacy. YSEALI Seeds gave us the funding we needed so we could focus on improving their skills and literacy without worrying about the funding. Furthermore, YSEALI Seeds also has equipped us in developing ideas to implement from the project planning stage, enabling the activities we carry out in the children’s detention center to have a significant impact on the development of the children.

What have you accomplished and implement so far?

The SETARA Project was launched on March 8, 2023. Since then, we have carried out several activities. Firstly, we have successfully recruited 10 volunteers and 10 facilitators who will actively participate in all our activities for the year ahead. Secondly, we conducted comprehensive training sessions for all volunteers and facilitators to equip them with the necessary skills and knowledge. Thirdly, we have set up a library by providing books and library equipment, as well as having trained prison officers and children on library management. Fourth, we implemented training classes as part of our soft skill training sessions. These achievements signify the progress made by the SETARA Project as we remain committed to continuing our efforts to create a positive impact on the lives of the children.

What are the most significant lessons learned you’ve experienced so far?

There's nothing like seeing the children smile from ear to ear and letting go of all their burdens. On the other hand, they have a past that doesn't need to be talked about, but they are still children with sincerity in their actions and honesty in their tears. They are great and they are working to be better.

What are the success stories you can share with others who would like to do the same type of activity and/or project like yours?

Our greatest success in implementing this project was when we successfully convinced the authorities at the children’s detention center to allow us to conduct activities with the children. Gaining access to carry out activities within the detention center was not easy, but we managed to do it. Therefore we are able to share knowledge and fulfill the right of education for the children.

Another successful achievement was when the projects we implemented had a positive impact on the children. They regained their enthusiasm for life and education after participating in the inspirative classes we organized. They now have unlimited access to education with the establishment of the library within the facility. Despite being confined, they are free to read books to quench their thirst for knowledge.

These achievements have significantly contributed to the well-being and educational opportunities for the children and we are proud of the positive transformations we have witnessed within the detention center.

Berangkat menuju PK (Persiapan Keberangkatan) dengan hati yang terkucilkan, merasa pilihan hidup saya direndahkan karena bukan mengambil Program Pendidikan Dokter Spesialis (PPDS), dalam rasa rendah diri saya ditampar oleh nasehat sahabat saya

“Jangan terlalu merasa rendah diri, nanti nikmat rasa syukurmu diambil dari Tuhan”.

Kembali saya ingat-ingat lagi hari dimana saya merasa sangat bahagia saat mendapati hasil pengumungan LPDP yang menyatakan kalau saya dinyatakan diterima, kemudian tak lama berselang saya juga dinyatakan di terima pada program Field Epidemiology Training Program (FETP), Master of Public Health UGM. Hari-hari itu cukup buat saya mendeklarasikan bahwa 2022 adalah tahun terbaik di hidup saya. Lalu kenapa sekarang saya merasa kecil ditengah-tengah pencapaian luar biasa versi saya yang membahagiakan ini.

18 Juni 2024, hari kedatangan pertama seluruh peserta PK/ calon awardee LPDP di Mercure Convention Center Jakarta, semua terasa asing. Bertemu orang-orang baru dengan latar belakang dan pencapaian yang berbeda-beda, ada sedikit rasa lelah setiap kali harus memulai percakapan, menjelaskan tentang siapa diri ini dan akan menuju kemana rencana perjalanan sekolah ini serta hal yang ingin segera saya lupakan namun masih menjadi pertanyaan nomor satu dalam setiap percakapan yaitu harus menjelaskan kenapa saya tidak ambil sekolah PPDS. Waktu berjalan, percakapanpun mengalir layaknya sebuah obrolan kasual, dari yang merasa dikerdilkan akhirnya menjadi sebuah percakapan yang menghangatkan, bercerita tentang perjalanan dan proses masing-masing, ada naik turun serta ada juga yang “mengalir aja” tapi di tengah gempuran ombak dan badai yang tak berkesudahan.

Rangkaian PK terus berjalan. Diawali dengan mengagumi sesama peserta dengan segala cerita naik-turunnya, kemudian dilanjutkan dengan mengagumi seluruh pemberi materi dengan cerita hidupnya yang nyaris Maha sempurna. Mereka orang-orang besar yang sebelumnya tak pernah terpikirkan bagi saya akan bisa bertemu, mendengarkan dan berdiskusi sedekat dan sehangat ini. Mulai dari jajaran direksi LPDP, pejabat tinggi Kementrian Keuangan, Ketua BPK RI hingga Ibu Menteri Sosial Ibu Risma dengan segudang kontribusinya untuk Indonesia. Ada juga guru-guru besar yang bukan hanya memberikan kontribusi pada Pendidikan, tapi juga untuk kemanusiaan dengan inovasi Technopreunership, Food Science, Karya seni yang mendunia dan segala hal baik yang ditularkan kepada saya dan seluruh peserta PK saat ini masih di fase memulai mimpi-mimpinya.

Bagi saya yang berangkat PK dengan hati kecil ini, perkenalan dengan YoMaMen (Grup Kopdar Yogya-Magelang-Kebumen), Pulanggeni dan maskoda mbakoda Banawa Agata adalah sebuah momentum yang menghangatkan hati sekaligus menggoreskan tawa yang sangat membekas. Segala cerita didalamnya bukanlah bentuk kesombongan melainkan sebuah perjalanan manusia biasa, dengan segala bumbu asam garamnya. Kebersamaan dengan kalian membuat hati yang kecil ini terasa penuh, walau dengan sedikit rasa iri, tapi kalian mengubahnya menjadi kagum yang tak berkesudahan. Semoga kalian merasakan hal yang sama.

Semoga Tuhan mempermudah kita semua dalam mencapai hal-hal baik kedepannya, jikalau pun itu belum tercapai, semoga Tuhan juga menitipkan kesabaran dan keihlasan yang cukup untuk menghangatkan hati-hati kita semua agar tidak terlalu berkecil hati.

Pop Artist Brian Walker was born and raised on a farm in the small town of East Kingston, New Hampshire. He turned his childhood bedroom into a recording studio, where he writes, produces and mixes his pop songs. Walker’s music has been featured on Spotify playlists such as “New Music Friday: Indonesia”, “Fresh Finds”, “Fresh Finds: Pop” and broadcasted on 92.5 The River Independent Radio. He has played over 750 shows across New England, performing at the Berklee Performance Center, Mohegan Sun, and many other venues. Walker's music has accumulated over 650,000 streams on Spotify, with his single "Lookin' Like My Wife" which he wrote, produced and mixed, up to over 230,000 Spotify streams as of 1/6/25.

In March of 2024, Walker dropped the second track off of his upcoming debut LP, a follow up to "When I Start To Care", called “Dear Jane”, which Iggy Magazine called an “Ode to Melancholy”. Walker than dropped track 3 off the album on 5.24.24, an edgy, funky tune called “Before the Roof Caves in” which features a music video where Walker is chased by “Wolf Girl” and her hypnotized henchmen. Blogger "EXTRAVAFRENCH" referred to this song as "An Ode To Determination". Walker's latest single "IMMA GET MINE" drops on 1.24.25, and features an inspirational music video about a runner who gets pushed and loses a race, and then trains to beat him.
