🇵🇷 For the last day of VBS at San Pablo, Indiana Jones and Marion Ravenwood made a surprise visit this afternoon. Their arrival caught me and the others off guard. Just like the “Star Wars” characters appearing at Union Church, we were all genuinely excited and surprised. 🗺️🤠

I went to both Tokyo Disney parks! Some thoughts/experiences:
People there wave at animatronics! I get laughed at for doing that in Florida!
Go during Halloween if you can. Tons of cosplayers go and the costumes you'll see are insane. And you can easily get a picture with a really good cosplayer instead of waiting in line for an official face character.
The Halloween night show at DisneySea was the worst. 7 minutes of very few fireworks, followed by an extremely weird heartfelt song that was like "🎵it's Halloween night... And we will go out... And get treats🎶". What the hell was that? Also, they run fireworks until 9PM exactly. I'm guessing they have to because there would be massive crowds of people waiting if there was just one show. People there have no qualms about sitting and waiting for 3+ hours for a parade or fireworks show.
Fantasy Springs was really great. The central area, design aesthetic and rockwork tied it all together really well and the transitions between the different areas were about as seamless as they could possibly be.
The Frozen animatronics, because they were like 4ft tall and so skinny and had such huge eyes, looked like weird dolls/aliens up close. That might creep some people out but I really genuinely loved it. Get in the back of the boat and you can see them freeze between scenes. I've said this before but it's very weird that it's a boat ride, since it relies on one specific scene happening at a time, and every other boat ride there had scenes running continuously!
The Magic Lamp Theater is really good! I skipped it on my last trip because there's no real indication anywhere that it's anything more than a 3D show with Genie, but it has a preshow with an animatronic and it has live actors! And it runs continuously all day!
THE GACHA MACHINE IN THE TOWER OF TERROR GIFT SHOP. FUCK THAT ONE MACHINE IN PARTICULAR. I shit you not, I rolled that thing 9 times and didn't get the Henry keychain I wanted.
I saw a really amazing Sinbad cosplayer but they wouldn't let me get a picture :(
At Disneysea, I did 20k 2x, Sinbad 3x, Indiana Jones 3x, Raging Spirits 1x, Nemo 1x, Peter Pan 1x and Frozen 1x, and the carousel 1x. I would've done Aquatopia, but last time it got me very wet and I had to go home on the subway with wet socks, so no thanks.
It's insane how good the single rider lines are especially at night. Wish they would bring those to Disneyland. Beauty could use one; they even had signs up for one but it wasn't in use.
Why is Sinbad always a walk on?? It's one of the best dark rides ever and it has a cute character in it!
Covid absolutely murdered DisneySea's live entertainment and it has NOT recovered. The afternoon lagoon show was a "Halloween greeting" that consisted entirely of some characters riding a barge out onto the water and dancing. Remember when they used to sail pirate ships in that lagoon? Multiple theaters are sitting empty, notably in Lost River Delta and Triton's Kingdom. Very sad.
If you don't know how to use the app or how passes work, you're screwed on lines and you can't even get into certain restaurants, at least at DisneySea! It's heartbreaking! I made friends with an American couple in the morning who had no idea how any of the passes worked, so I told them. It took multiple explanations, which I don't blame them for because it took me a few weeks to understand it myself. Then when we got into the park at rope drop, they tried to get Frozen passes... and couldn't, because their app glitched out at the crucial moment. I understand the Fantasy Springs thing because it's so new, but paid fastpasses being implemented here and everything being dependent on the app... It hurts to watch, man. Especially since last time I went, there were still paper Fastpasses, which are much easier and more accessible. Idk, I just think it should be possible to walk into a theme park and have at least a chance of doing stuff without memorizing the rules of a bunch of different reservation systems (same problem I've had with WDW for years).
When you're on Frozen it's easy to not notice how bad the ride design is, unless you're like me (thinking "wow look at that empty space", "do we need 3 rooms for one song" etc) because it really is a technical marvel. Also I got hit directly in the eye by a water jet right after the Let It Go scene. Rude.
Haunted Mansion is smack dab in the middle of Fantasyland there. I'm not sure what the alternative is but it doesn't fit in there at all.
I do not care for Haunted Mansion Holiday. I hadn't seen it in person before this but damn it's so cheap-looking. Also I'm salty that I didn't get to see the Tokyo bride.
What I like about Beauty and the Beast is that you get a nice long look at every animatronic since the scenes are so long. I felt satisfied after one go-around, which is rare for me.
Were there canoes in Rivers of America at WDW? Regardless, I'm glad that there are some in Tokyo. Rafts, canoes and a boat-- multiple forms of transportation, like Walt wanted!
Davy Jones on Pirates has one of the funniest line deliveries I've seen on a ride. "So says I..... DAVY JONES-UH!"
Monsters Inc was really good. It's basically just Men in Black: Alien Attack-- you enter through a company run by weird creatures, and then shoot at those creatures as you go through a city that looks a lot like New York. They seem to have seasonal changes to the dialogue-- Luz said "happy Halloween" at the end!
In a crowded bathroom, a CM said "hime-sama, dozo!" to indicate which stall I should use. That's honestly the first time I've been called "princess" in a bathroom. This was even in Frontierland, a place you would not expect to be called a princess.
Country Bears Vacation Hoedown was great. Nothing prepares you for a bear singing Achey Breaky Heart in Japanese. They opened with Great Outdoors, which I remember from that one Disneyland sing-along VHS that I watched as a kid!
The Snow White ride is the one where the witch just fucking kills you at the end! The amount of stuff this park keeps that American Disney parks think are super offensive is insane. Yeah, we'll keep Trader Sam. Sure, we'll play Dixie in Critter Country. I do understand why they made those changes in America-- especially on Pirates, I forgot how creepy the bride auction scene was.
Sucks to see Space Mountain gone. I bet something big is coming to Tomorrowland since they got rid of Buzz Lightyear and Space Mountain at the same time.
I'm pleasantly surprised that they kept Peter Pan's Flight, with Fantasy Springs and all. Though to be fair, it doesn't have a huge amount of space and barely any room for the queue, so there's probably not too much they could actually do with it.
I didn't get a picture but at the front of the Halloween parade was Dr Facilier doing the fruitiest little dance. And, WHERE IS THE HAUNTED MANSION BRIDE FACE CHARACTER? It's the Halloween parade!!! I did see like 4 women cosplaying as her though.
I got podracing and the Gungan city on Star Tours. Honestly, perfect. wouldn't change a thing.
I can't believe (in a good way) they included the FSU gopher on Splash-- nobody there knows what FSU is.
Someone was telling jokes and doing audience participation stuff over the intercom in the Jungle Cruise queue. Fun!
The Belle animatronics are life sized and not creepy up close. Probably not made by the same design team as Frozen.
Maybe I just haven't been to a Disney park in long enough but I'm pleasantly surprised at how close you get to the animatronics on these rides. Like, close enough to see the stray hairs on their heads. I wonder if someone has to re-style the animatronics' hair at night.
I really genuinely bow down to Japanese Disney fans. These mfs will spend 15-hour days in full cosplay, long sleeves and wigs and all. I saw a good number of people doing it.
People here are also so earnest! No sarcasm or irony, no "dad dragged to Disney" type shit (at least not that I saw). People clap at Country Bears, wave to you from the queue when you're on a ride, etc. For the most part, everyone really wants to be there. Plus Japanese people are so pleasant in general. I was at rope drop trying to get into an extremely popular land that opened 4 months ago. I haven't been in that situation in America but I don't think everyone involved would be quietly, politely filing into the gates. The only comparable situation I've been in was going to Hollywood Studios right after Rise of the Resistance opened, and it was kill or be killed there.
Don't try to do every single ride at Disneyland in one day, holy shit. I went on ALL the dark rides and it was a LOT of exertion. Prioritize the stuff you can't get at home. And you should probably do rope drop regardless of how many rides you do.
By the way, rope drop there consists of getting in line at 6:30 AM or earlier. I got to Disneyland at 6:30 on a Sunday and there were at LEAST a thousand people ahead of me. These people really do not fucking play around.
Million Dollar Bunny always works there! Is this one called 100 Million Yen Bunny?
Maybe I'm just spoiled by Magic Kingdom Tomorrowland, but the Tokyo one would really benefit from an Astro Orbiter or something. The place is largely just one level and that would make it a lot more dynamic.
Overall, yeah, I still think DisneySea is the best theme park in the world. Both parks are absolutely stacked in terms of attractions, the food is fantastic, and the staff, of course, is excellent in every way. It's just an incredibly pleasant experience overall. I can always find something to complain about at any park but my issues here were very minimal. In case you're going anytime soon, here are the rope drop plans that worked well for me (keep in mind that I got to both parks at 6:30AM):
DisneySea: first, grab a pass for Frozen if possible. It's crucial to get in super early for this one to get the standby pass; I've heard that international credit cards can take a little bit to process payments so you may have a hard time getting Premiere Access. If you get a standby pass, you can buy Premiere Access for another Fantasy Springs ride, or for Soaring if you're into that (it'll be 80 min minimum all day, but it's not worth that wait at all if you've been on either US version). Grab a 40th pass for Indiana Jones if you don't want to do single-rider for that one, or for Nemo if you do (Journey to the Center of the Earth was closed when I went, but prioritize that one too). Set an alarm to get another Fantasy Springs standby pass as soon as you can, because they run out fast. Run to Tower of Terror. Then do whatever you want for the rest of the day-- if you single-rider Indiana Jones and Raging Spirits, they are walk-ons all day. 20k Leagues will be a walk-on after 8PM.
Disneyland: grab Premiere Access for Beauty, then get a 40th pass for Monsters Inc. If you're in the park early enough, they should both give you really early return times. Set an alarm for the next time you can get 40th and Premiere passes (the app will tell you both) and when they go off, you can probably get a 40th pass for Big Thunder. You can buy Premiere for Baymax too, if you're into that. Then run to Pooh, and if you have enough time before your 40th/Premiere return times, go to Mansion. All the other dark rides in the park will have very reasonable wait times for the rest of the day, except for Splash, which will probably have Premiere Access available for pretty long into the day. Pooh and Monsters' wait times will go way down after 8PM too. If you want to see the afternoon parade, I recommend getting in the Peter Pan queue about 3PM; it's in a good spot to see the floats and you don't have to deal with the truly massive amount of people who by that point will have secured all the good parade viewing spots 3 hours earlier.

TLT BRE Cosplay Progress Thread!
Between working Summer Stock I've also been helping organize and participating in the @tlt-big-resurrection event! One of my favorite things about this event is it includes cosplayers! When I was browsing fic summaries to find what I wanted to do I came across @incorrect-house-of-nine 's fic. Title pending but its a steam/chem/desert punk Locked tomb AU Mummyesque/Indiana Jones type adventure. (Yes I stole that description straight from them kfjjlasdjfsdf) It's been a blast learning about their amazing world building for it and I've REALLY enjoyed reading it as it unfold. Y'all are in for a treat. This is for Gideon's outfit so far. I ended up having to draft the harness thing from scratch after trying to alter patterns (just worked better) and I still gotta add the hood and strap and stuff. It's great to finally see it all coming together finally. I'll be making Gideon and Harrow for this event (and probably doing more after when I have more time/better locations/can maybe drag friends into this dfafd) Photos are: my progress, the inspiration, and a super quick sketch to get an idea of the pieces together for my own brain.

Shoutout to @twilitepitaph for the kind of spelunking prowess that Indiana Jones cosplayers and Internet historians alike crave with every inch of their being, because ever since they found this song from that Nanaya video I haven’t stopped looping it.

Me, my Twin @dudepool_unsainted and uh @thatkevinsmith @jaymewes @briancohalloran , Jeff Anderson and Trevor Fehrman or better known as The Cast of Clerks! What a dream come true! I had to get my twin, Carlo to meet his Heroes! As you can tell by the t-shirt he’s wearing that he’s ailing. Fighting cancer yet again and is starting chemo very soon. Please wish him luck and keep him in your prayers and thoughts. He’d really appreciate it and I would too! 🙏🏼 Oh and btw, this is not the only funny split pic I have from this Con. Wait til’ you see the next post! 😂 S/O to Jeff Anderson for playing with my Indiana Jones Whip and hitting himself in the back while trying to crack it! He’s okay obviously but maaaan that was funny! 😂😂😂 - #fuckcancer #clerks #clerks3 #clerks2 #kevinsmith #jasonmewes #brianohalloran #jeffanderson #trevorfehrman #jeanclaudevandamme #streetfighter #splits #scifi #fanexposf #fanexposanfrancisco2022 #jayandsilentbob #jayandsilentbobreboot #420 #chasingamy #mallrats #cosplay #cosplayer #cosplayersofinstagram #cosplayersofig #fatboycosplay (at Moscone Center, San Francisco, CA) https://www.instagram.com/p/ClhhedMPEDJ/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Sumisu Cosplay: Indiana Jones

Hey, so back in September I went to the anime convention for four days, and the reason I didn't say anything right away is because I was waiting on two other commissions. Well, they both came, and now I can share it.
So, back in September, I went to an anime convention with Canada and Sasha, since last year I went with America and Estonia. We ended up staying for the whole event, which we usually don't do but since Canada had something to do in the same town the day after the convention officially ended, we did it this time. The first day we got there, we got some Culver's before going to our hotel room and unpacking, which was a lot harder to do than it looked. Since we arrived on the first day of the con, the hotel had a lot of people checking in so we had to wait a while to check in, but once we did it was pretty smooth sailing from there. We relaxed for a bit and then checked out the vendor hall before it closed. Saw some cool stuff, got some stuff. We got some dinner at a new Ramen place across the street, a d the Ramen they make is so good, way better than what you'd find at the store. Like so much better. So anyway, after that we went down to a panel at 10 pm where everyone discussed their fictional character crushes (one of the panelists had Rattlesnake Jake as a crush, and I was just so excited to see someone giving my dad some love, it just feels like nobody else loves him but me!). I got to admit a few of my fictional crushes (not saying who they are yet 🤫🤭), and I really felt among my people. The next panel was a Hetalia truth or dare panel that was at 11:30, and since I was going as Sealand from Hetalia, I fit right in; I got a few cosplayera who recognized me. I got to ask a few questions, even got asked to feel Germany's muscles (😳), got a dare or two in, I even got to sit up on the panel when three Nordic cosplayers got dared to switch out with three audience members of their choice for three rounds (I was chosen by Denmark), so yay my first panel experience! 🙌 So that went on until midnight.
The next day there was another Hetalia panel at 11:30, so I had to get up early for that, which I didn't mind at all; believe or not, an England cosplayer actually asked me to film it, which I accepted. I still got to participate- got to ask some questions and whatnot, seeing as how it was called 'A Scandal In Hetalia' where we basically had to solve who kidnapped Pierre, France's dove (it was Prussia). Also, I have a new ship thanks to that panel. That went on until 12:30. After that we checked out the rest of the vendor hall, bought some more stuff, and went to a small BJD panel that was at 1 called 'Anime doll meetup.' Not a whole lot happened during that panel, it was mainly people bringing in anime-style ball jointed dollars for you to look at and ask questions about, and there I learned that a Hetalia America doll I bought I believe two years ago actually counts as a ball-jointed doll, since somebody brought one on just like mine which I did not know, so I'll have to bring him next year. After that we bought some more stuff in the vendor hall, headed back up to the hotel room to get some lunch and watch an Indiana Jones movie to pass the time until the next panel at 4, which was a workshop where you got to make little miniature bento boxes for your ball-jointed dolls. We had a little bit of trouble assembling the boxes but I'm still proud of mine. It was a two-part workshop, over the span of two days and we went to the first part, which was making the boxes themselves. After that we went back up to the hotel room, ordered us some dinner, watched some TV, and went down at 10 for a panel called 'Art Attack', where we all played a game where we collaborated with an artist to come up with a new character based on a theme. Basically, after selecting a base for the body, we would all submit our ideas on this website for a specific part and each idea was put on a wheel that was spun, and whatever idea it landed on would go on the character. Unfortunately, I don't have a copy of the end result so I can't show you guys, but I don't mind; I had fun regardless.
The next day we didn’t have to wake up as early since the panels we wanted to go to weren't until late at night, so we got to mostly relax until 1 pm when there was a maid Cafe that was old anime-themed- the dance they did was the Haruhi Suzumiya ending dance That was fun, except the other sweets I ordered never came :/ Oh well. I still got to take a photo with two of my favorite maids and I got to have it personalized, so that was fun. After that I visited the vendor hall to order some commissions until the next panel at 4 pm, which was the second part of the miniature bento box workshop the day before. This part focused more in creating the miniature food that went inside the boxes and finishing off the boxes. Of course, I spent more time making sure my boxes looked good, but they gave us extra clay to take home and make food with, so that was nice. If I'm being honest, that panel was a lot of fun, I'm hoping the woman in charge comes back next year. After that we went up and ordered us some dinner from Five Guys since the next panel wasn't until 8:30, so we had some time to kill. At 8:30, we went down to the panel which was another Hetalia panel that was mostly centered around APH America and so had a bunch of America cosplayers- regular, nyo, 2p nyo, emo, America as Captain America, and Canada was involved too. Oh, and there was a toddler as part of the panel that was passed off as Chibi America; England even asked me to film this panel too. It was fun too, got a few American-themed goodies, got to ask some questions like what was their favorite Golden Girl, made a Victoria's Secret (the song) reference by telling England that Victoria was made up by a dude. Overall, very funny, would go again. Also, emo America was cute. After that we waited in line for the next panel which was a silent library panel. Unfortunately, this one wasn't as fun as the last one. For starters, there were a lot more people than at the last one, and they were all loud and wild as fuck, like seriously; the panel started at ten and went on til midnight and we only got three challenges done because most of it was spent the host trying to quiet everybody down because they all kept yelling when someone got punished for failing a challenge, or just for no reason. Then, people kept going in and out to use the bathroom so someone would yell 'door' whenever someone walked in, which wouldn't have been bad if it weren’t for the fact that it kept happening every time someone was up on stage to get punished for failing a challenge. On top of that, people got way too into the punishment, like they actually started taking off their pants before getting spanked, which was not something they did at the last silent library I went to. Now, I have no problem with nudity or sex when it comes to fictional characters, but that's it, that is my personal limit. I don't like real life human nudity, I hate humans, I'm not attracted to them at all, and yeah you get the point. Not only that, but since this was an 18+ panel, there was a strict 'No phones allowed' rule, and I swear, people do not know how to follow the rules, because the host caught someone with their phone out three times and all three times the person on their phone was escorted out or asked to leave. I swear, it's like being courteous to everyone participating in the panel was a foreign concept to them. On top of that, my wig kept giving me trouble, so we ended up leaving a half hour in. So yeah, not as fun as the last silent library panel I went to.
The last day of the con wasn't very exciting, which meant we were able to pack up everything with no trouble so we could leave the next day with ease since we had to check out the next day. There was a 'Test your rizz' panel that I wanted to go to since I thought it was like a panel I went to at a different con several years ago where you defended your fictional character and convinced the audience why they were superior waifu or husbando, but it wasn't anything like that, and the characters being cosplayed that were part of the panel weren't ones I'm into, so I quickly got bored and left and we just relaxed in the craft room. Overall, we took it easy the rest of the day, checked out the next day (we usually leave the con on the last day of the con while people are still there, so leaving it while it was completely empty save for the general public felt so fucking weird) stayed at another hotel since cousin Canada (standing in for a real life family member) had an appointment with a specialist, and the following day we went home. Overall, this con was a lot of fun, and I hope next year's con will be just as fun.
So I got a lot of stuff at this year's con, but before I show it, I absolutely have to show you all these cute little bento boxes I made at one of the panels.
Unfortunately, I started them at the con and didn't finish them until recently, and by then the clay they had allowed some of us to take home- which we used to make the miniature food- had dried up, so I ended up half-assing the food. They're not perfect but I still like them.
Okay, so, onto the stuff.
Sadly, there's a photo limit so I'll have to put what I got in a different post since it's quite a bit when combined with the bento box images.
Antis dni, this post is not for you

I mean, this was probably well-intended (I get very, VERY similar comments), it's just frustrating as a costumer to see entire eras get flattened because I'm dressing in a way that feels unusual to modern eyes.
It's also extremely frustrating to see this flattening when something from pop-culture becomes the iconic example of an article of clothing.
This hat, for example, will always be the Dr. Jones, Sr. hat. I will be in completely different clothing (cosplay in this case) and still get, "this reminds me of Indiana Jones" comments.
This bothers me more than folks not knowing fashion history. Knowing fashion history is specialist knowledge, it's fine not to know much about it. But telling me that I remind you of something unrelated to what I'm doing just feels rude -- I feel like what I enjoy isn't interesting enough to stand on its own merits for your consumption. (I hear a very similar complaint from artists about their OCs.)
It's always awkward as a cosplayer / vintage nerd on how to reply to this sort of thing. I don't want to extinguish a bonding moment, but on the other hand, the flattening of rich fashion history into pop culture nuggets is a bit soul-destroying when this is one of your special interests.
"So what, I shouldn't compliment people?"
Not what I am saying. But gentle caution that "you doing [x] reminds me of [y]" can be a minefield. It sometimes even comes off as, "you did such a bad job at [x] that I confused it for [y]."
#rrramblings#don't feel bad if you have done this but the success rate I get of people knowing when I am in 30s/40s vibe clothing#it is maybe 1 in 100s of comments

Indiana Jones : IndianaDad
My daughter, Arras Marie, had been going to Otakon, a convention in Baltimore (now in DC), for many years. It was quite an event for the anime generation, with thousands of people, many of them costumed, attending panels, viewing movies, and shopping for anime art and products.
Ever since she had been attending Otakon, I've been recruited to drive her there and back. Even after she got her license, it was easier for me to drive than for her to try and park. Outside the convention center each year I saw the hundreds or thousands cosplayers coming and going every day. That (and listening to Arras tell stories of the con) made me curious to see what is going on inside.
And for several years Arras had been encouraging me to do just that. I had also been trying to think of the best way to dress if I did go. Finally one year, my wife said, "why don't you go as Indiana Jones?" What a great Idea!
Age appropriate and not at all "creepy." I'm sure my wife thought I would grab my son's leather flying jacket, put on some Khakis and go. But my son had graduated from college and moved out, and took his leather jacket with him. So I found the Indy Gear Resource on-line. That led me to Wested Leather (who made the jacket for at least one of the movies). But they also sell a jacket/pants/belt combo.
So next I know I have a package on the way from England. Then I bought a hat from Hats in the Belfry. I got an inexpensive, but not very accurate whip from Outback Leather in Laurel (since replace by a good one from Todd Costumes). Then I went to Tandy leather and bought supplies and made a belt, strap for bag, and holster. I couldn't get an authentic MK. VII gas mask bag soon enough, so I bought a toy bag from Amazon.com, along with an Indiana toy gun. The result was very authentic attire.
As I walked up to the line to get into the Con, people called out "Indiana Jones!" At first I thought that they were mocking me. Then I realized that what you do at the Con is—if you recognize a costume—you call out the name of the character. Over the next three days I got used to waiving or saying hello to everyone who called out "Indiana Jones". One conventioneer even asked me "are you a teacher?" (I was, in fact), it took me a second to realize that the correct answer was "part time."
I also had my picture taken 50 or a 100 times. People are very polite about it. The custom (and rule) is that you have to ask first before taking any pictures. Since then I have commissioned a holy grail and purchased an authentic MKVII gas mask bag replica from Indy Magnoli in Australia. I got a better whip for Christmas and have finally gotten by boots from Todd Costumes.
I still look for opportunities to dress like Indiana Jones whenever I can. One advantage of this cosplay is that it is comfortable to wear and so can be worn for long period of time.
