#Indian Rock Band
Text
youtube
This was an Indian rock band from the late 90s.
This song stood out for me because of the soft percussion (tabla), the bass, and feel of the singing. [Maybe the title too, can't tell about some of such things...]

Bio:
Formed by Ram Sampath (vocals, synths, drum programming) & Siddharth Achrekar (Guitars) in 1998, Colourblind released only one album but its good enough to rub shoulders with the best in the business. The album was released under a P&D deal by Sony Music India. There were plans to support the album with a tour, but unfortunately Siddharth went temporarily deaf in one ear, due to which all plans were canned. Now, Ram owns a recording studio & is active on the film scores & advertising jingles scene. Sidd, in the meantime, has gone on to become a VFX artist.

George Harrison (25 February 1943 – 29 November 2001)was a musician, singer-songwriter, and film producer. He is best known for being the lead guitarist of the Beatles. He would often be referred to as the “ quiet Beatle.” Various blues and early rock and roll artists heavily influenced Harrison and the rest of the Beatles. But, after some time in India, Harrison was influenced and embraced Indian music, culture, and religion, which helped broaden the scope of the band’s music. Harrison also contributed to songwriting for the band. The songs he wrote include “ Taxman,” While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” and one of my favorites, “ Here Comes the Sun.”He was one of the first members of the groups looking to work on his music and branch out to new and different sounds. He briefly left the group while recording the album Let I Be. but he came after much convincing from the other three. After the Beatles parted ways, Harrison released several best-selling singles and albums. In 1971, he helped organize a Concert for Bangladesh with the help of Indian musician and mentor Ravi Shankar. He was a producer assisting many artists on the Beatles’ record label Apple. He co-founded the supergroup The Traveling Wilburys. 1988. He collaborated with several artists, including his former bandmates Ringo Starr, Billy Preston, Eric Clapton, and Tom Petty, most notably Ravi Shankar. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame once as a member of the Beatles in 1988 and posthumously for his solo career in 2004; he is ranked 11th on Rolling Stone magazine’s 100 greatest guitarists. Harrison also served as a music and film producer. He founded Dark Horse Records in 1974 and co-founded HandMade Films In 1978. He even appeared as himself on one of my favorite episodes of The Simpsons. Harrison is still a significant influence on many artists. He was one of the unique Beatles.

IT'S ALL TRUE -- FLUX OF PINK INDIANS & DISCHARGE WERE GOING TO TOUR TOGETHER!
Now, for this quote about Bambi Ellesmere's stint in FLUX and the joint nuke wave tour that never happened:
"Shortly after, Sid (drummer) decided to jump ship in order to get RUBELLA BALLET into a higher gear, and guitarist Andy left to pursue different musical ideals. The drummer's stool was filled by Dave (a.k.a. "Bambi") who had been playing with DISCHARGE and who'd met FLUX during plans for the two bands to tour together, and he brought along guitarist Simon, a friend and colleague from previous and sideline group THE INSANE."
-- "NOT SO BRAVE" CD compilation liner notes, released under the UK's Overground label in 1997
EXTRA INFO: Shot of Dave "Bambi" possibly drumming with THE INSANE, plus two live shots of DISCHARGE, c. 1980-'81.
Dis nightmare still @$!*#&% continues!!

Remembering Sixto Diaz Rodriguez and Robbie Robertson
What a day for music fans! Here is my combined remembrance of two musicians we lost today:
Remembering Sixto Diaz Rodriguez 1942-2023

movie poster
The singer-songwriter known as Rodriguez as died at 81. He released some folk albums in the early 70s that went largely unnoticed in the U.S. but had a big impact in South Africa. In the 2012 documentary Searching for Sugar Man (which won the Academy Award for Best Documentary), they document the search for the singer who was rumored to be dead but was living a humble life in Detroit. Sadly the documentary director Malik Bendjelloul died in 2014. Even if supposedly the documentary glossed over some elements of Rodriguez' life, it made the point that a long lost musician can still have an impact years later and far away. I included the doc on my Best Docs of the 2010s and picked up the soundtrack.

Remembering Robbie Robertson 1943-2023

The Band leader and accomplished solo artist Robbie Robertson has died at 80. The Band - just The Band nothing more - were critic’s darlings of the 60s / 70s. A folk rock band that made truly timeless music and all members played off each other so well. Their 1969 self-titled album is a classic and I have it on vinyl. When they did their farewell concert in 1976 (they later re-formed), Martin Scorsese directed that concert and it was released in 1978 as The Last Waltz. That 1977 concert film is arguably the greatest concert movie of all time. Whenever music or film geeks debate the greatest concert film ever made, it always comes down to The Last Waltz and Jonathan Demme’s Talking Heads concert film Stop Making Sense. Both The Last Waltz concert film and the live album were time capsule-worthy. Ringo Starr even sat in on a song. George Harrison was a close friend and admirer or Robertson and The Band as well. Also worth checking out are the albums Robertson / The Band did with Bob Dylan, notably Dylan's masterpiece Blonde on Blonde.

Scorsese and Robertson
In addition to numerous solo albums and music producing, Robertson became a close collaborator with Scorsese on a number of his films, composing music, songs and/or doing music supervision on Raging Bull, The King of Comedy, The Color of Money, Casino, Gangs of New York, Shutter Island, The Wolf of Wall Street, Silence, The Irishman, and the upcoming Killers of the Flower Moon. What a great team they made! Music has always been a big part of Scorsese's films and the music Robertson was responsible for truly enhanced those films.
Robertson also appeared in numerous documentaries including Rumble: The Indians Who Rocked the World (read my interview with director Catherine Bainbridge here), Elvis Presley: The Searcher (read my review here), and of course Once Were Brothers: Robbie Robertson & The Band (read my review here).

I need people to appreciate how hard this picture goes
Tumblr media
It's from a gig featured in an article in The Hindu that covered the Chennai metal music scene recently! While Bangalore, Kolkata and Assam (as well as a few other eastern states/territories in the Seven Sisters) are known as meccas for metal in India, Chennai, which has always been known for more folky and fusion alternative music amongst the independent scene, is warming up to metal. The article spoke to some of the musicians who have laid down the foundations for metal spaces, nights and venues to come up over the last 10 years.
I'm glad to see it, of course. But can we take a separate moment to appreciate metal in a dhoti?

Remembering Wayne Kramer 1948-2024
Musician Wayne Kramer has died at 75. He was the founding guitarist for the legendary Detroit band MC5, who were among the architects of punk rock. In the history of punk music, people point to NYC or the London scene as the birthplace of punk, but Detroit in the late 60s is where both MC5 and The Stooges were laying the building blocks of what became punk rock in the years that followed.
Tumblr media
Kramer and the MC5
MC5's song "Kick out the Jams" was a burst of rebellious energy in 1969. I listened to the cover version by Bad Brains and Henry Rollins on the Pump Up the Volume soundtrack many a time growing up. Other covers include Pearl Jam and Rage Against the Machine.
In addition to MC5, Kramer did a ton of solo work, collaborations and film scoring. He also had his run-ins with the law and The Clash's song "Jail Guitar Doors" was about him. He performed with a ton of musicians who counted him as an influence, including Alice Cooper's 2021 album Detroit Stories, which contained some MC5 covers and Kramer played on much of the album.
It should also be added that he appeared in a number of music documentaries including my buddy Mark Covino's A Band Called Death, Super Duper Alice Cooper, my friend Brendan Toller's Danny Says, Rumble: The Indians Who Rocked the World, and Creem: America's Only Rock 'n' Roll Magazine.
