Agnes McLaren was born in Edinburgh, in 1837.
Agnes became a respected doctor who was one of the first to give medical assistance to women in India who, because of custom, were unable to access medical help from male doctors.
Born into a politically prominent family.  As a result, she was exposed to a wide range of issues and personalities that were current in Victorian Society.  Contrary to the norm, Agnes’ parents supported the idea of education for women.  Agnes was encouraged to follow her own interests and in 1878 became only the tenth woman in Britain to qualify as a doctor.
She entered the school of medicine at the University of Montpellier in 1876, eventually becoming only the tenth woman in Britain to graduate as a doctor. In 1877 she sat on the governing body of the London School of Medicine for Women. She was a visiting physician at the Cannongate Medical Mission Dispensary in Edinburgh. By 1882, she was also Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland, and had a practice in Cannes. She would spend the summers in Edinburgh and relocate to France in the winter.
Drawing on her enormous experience, network of contacts and family standing, Agnes devoted her entire life to the cause of social justice for women, including suffrage, admission to university and professional education, human trafficking and rights for prostitutes and prisoners, she was way ahead of her time in this wrk.
Agnes is remembered for her efforts to improve the lives of women in Rawalpindi, northern India (now Pakistan).  Custom and religious beliefs prevented women from being seen by men outside the immediate family and so medical treatment could not be accepted from male doctors.  Female physicians were rare. Agnes visited India and witnessed suffering, sickness and death that could often have been prevented with good medical and nursing care. With so few women doctors in the early 1900s, literally thousands of women died in illness or in childbirth each year and many babies also died in infancy.
In response to what she had seen, Agnes established a support group of women in London - the London Committee - that would publicise and raise funds for a hospital where women would be attended by women. In 1909, St Catherine's, a 16-bed hospital, was opened.
Agnes experienced many frustrations in her attempts to recruit suitable staff, but was supported by the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary who helped run the new hospital.
Agnes died in 1913 and was buried in Antibes, France. Her obituary in the British Medical Journal describes her as "a woman of strong individuality and character, known to a large circle of philanthropic workers of many nations, many kindreds and many creeds."

Be Still. . . is a tea set—the pear half and quarters are actually elaborate stands for the teapot, creamer, and sugar bowl. Like many of Kathleen Royster Lamb's pieces, leaves and thorns play a prominent role in the interpretation of the design. To Lamb, the leaves signify a protective layer while the thorns symbolize pain. Lamb considers the pear shape to be a feminine form where the leaves protect the fruit's fleshy, delicate core from the thorns of the creamer and sugar bowl. By exposing the core of the fruit, she wants to create a feeling of vulnerability and drama. Lamb intentionally emphasized the length of each pear's stem in an attempt to represent the balance, or lack thereof, that we find within ourselves. (Susan Peterson, Contemporary Ceramics, 2000)
#bornonthisday Kathleen Royster Lamb enrolled in Portland State University in 1978, but withdrew after her third year because she "wanted an adventure." She relocated to Alaska, where she worked as a commercial fisherman during the summer and traveled all over the world in the winter, visiting New Zealand, Australia, India, and Nepal. Around her thirtieth birthday, Lamb decided to return to college, and this time entered the University of Utah, Salt Lake City, where she received a BFA and MFA in ceramics. She initially majored in graphic design, but soon found herself drawn to clay due to its tactile nature and the technical challenges the material presents. She began teaching ceramics at the college level after graduation, which she continues to do to this day. Lamb has exhibited her works internationally, and her pieces are found in several collections, including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Arizona State Art Museum. ISOLATION FROM SURROUNDINGS AND LONELINESS.
The city of joy is an ageing urban setting —this is not the concrete jungle—not a city of color. Kolkata currently has the most people aged 60 and above in India, despite other Indian cities having younger populations. And to make matters worse, Kolkata has disturbingly low rates of the population's 20-year-olds, who make up the largest age group in all major cities.
According to a U.N. assessment from 2019, India, the second most populous nation in the world, would probably overtake China as the most populous nation by 2027 by adding over 273 million people to its current population. Accordingly, the National Statistical Office (NSO) predicted that India's old population will rise throughout the forecast period, rising from 138 million in 2021 to 194 million in 2031. With the nation's ageing population, senior poverty has emerged as a critical societal concern.
According to the WHO, those 60 to 74 are considered old. The old population segment was divided into the following categories by the UN in 1980 when it suggested 60 as the age of transition:
Between the ages of 60 and 75, young to old.
75 to 85 years old is considered to be old.
85 years or older is quite old.
The joint family, which emphasis the family as a unit and requires reverence to age and authority, is progressively being replaced by nuclear homes, which are characterize   by individualism, independence, and a need for privacy. Children who relocate frequently struggle to adjust to city life and decide to abandon their elderly parents in the village, which creates issues for the elderly with loneliness and a shortage of careers. Parents in this situation might have to take care of themselves because they can't always rely on their kids for financial assistance. They keep working, but at a slower rate.
Old Age Homes' function as careers:-
Even though it's not particularly prevalent, the idea of an old age home exists in India. The Bangalore Friends-in Need organization opened the first old age home in Bangalore in 1983. It was known as the "(Obb Home)". Help Age India believes that there are currently 728 institutions, with maybe the most of them located in metropolitan regions. Despite government and non-governmental organization (NGO) efforts, the elderly in India continue to be the most vulnerable population, suffering from a variety of issues. As a result, they need sufficient care and attention. Growing older is a normal process. "Old age is a disease that has no cure."
The aged in India may benefit greatly from the following recommendations-
The family-informal system, where the concept of care is rooted within a history of social duties that are acknowledged and reciprocated, should be strengthened since it is still the preferred source of assistance for the elderly. It is important to promote the mutual support and care between parents, grandparents, and children in multigenerational homes. Additionally, media and school curriculum can be used to reaffirm traditional ideals of filial responsibilities.
The connections within families that include both young and old people must be improved via institutional care. Effective law is required to protect parents' rights to be taken care of by their children.
The general public's awareness of the need to safeguard this subgroup must be raised. The target population, which consists of elderly rural residents, elderly women, and widows, has to be protected urgently.
Additionally, it is important for the elderly to be active, to understand that they can still contribute to their family or community and to the nation and society at large.

The Refugee Crisis: Escaping War and Seeking a New Home
The Human Cost of Displacement
War and persecution force millions of people to flee their homes. Refugees do not leave by choice; they run to survive. Entire families are uprooted overnight, leaving behind homes, jobs, and communities. Their journeys are filled with uncertainty, danger, and trauma. The scale of displacement today is massive.
According to the UNHCR, over 100 million people worldwide are forcibly displaced. This includes those escaping war in Syria, the Rohingya genocide in Myanmar, and the conflict in Ukraine.
Forced displacement has existed throughout history. People have fled war, persecution, and natural disasters for centuries. After World War II, millions of Europeans were displaced due to conflict and genocide. The Holocaust led to the mass migration of Jewish survivors who sought refuge in countries like the United States and Israel. Similarly, the partition of India in 1947 forced millions to cross newly drawn borders, leading to one of the largest forced migrations in history. These historical events show that war and political instability are key drivers of displacement.
In the modern world, forced displacement remains a pressing issue. The Syrian Civil War, which began in 2011, has displaced over 13 million people. Many have fled to neighboring countries like Turkey, Lebanon, and Jordan, while others have risked dangerous journeys to Europe. Meanwhile, the Rohingya crisis in Myanmar has left nearly one million people stateless, as they are denied citizenship and forced into overcrowded refugee camps in Bangladesh. More recently, the Russian invasion of Ukraine has led to the rapid displacement of millions, many of whom have sought asylum in European nations.
Forced displacement creates deep psychological trauma. Refugees not only lose their homes but also their sense of identity and security. Many experience post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) due to war, violence, and loss. Children who grow up in refugee camps face disrupted education and uncertain futures. These challenges show that displacement is not only about physical relocation but also about long-term emotional and social consequences.
The response to refugees varies across nations. Some countries accept displaced people and provide aid, while others close their borders. International organizations like the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) play a role in offering assistance, but political tensions often limit their effectiveness. Policies on asylum and refugee protection continue to shape the lives of millions.
The Syrian Refugee Crisis
The Syrian Civil War, which began in 2011, has led to one of the most severe refugee crises in recent history. Over 13 million Syrians have been displaced, with many seeking safety in neighboring countries like Jordan. In response, Jordan established the Zaatari refugee camp in July 2012 to accommodate the influx of refugees. Initially hosting 450 Syrians, the camp's population rapidly expanded, reaching approximately 80,000 residents by 2022. citeturn0search0
Life in Zaatari presents numerous challenges. Residents face harsh living conditions, with many shelters deteriorating over time. Access to essential services such as electricity and water is limited, and economic opportunities are scarce. Despite these hardships, the camp has developed a vibrant community, featuring markets and small businesses established by enterprising refugees.
The psychological impact of displacement is profound. Many refugees have experienced significant trauma, including the loss of loved ones and homes. The uncertainty of their future and the prolonged nature of their displacement contribute to ongoing mental health challenges. Efforts to address these issues are ongoing, but resources remain limited.
International organizations like the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) have played a crucial role in providing aid and support to Syrian refugees. However, the protracted nature of the crisis and funding constraints have hindered the effectiveness of these interventions. The global community continues to grapple with finding sustainable solutions to support both the refugees and the host countries bearing the brunt of this humanitarian emergency.
A System Under Strain
The global response to refugees is shaped by international agreements and organizations. The 1951 Refugee Convention and its 1967 Protocol define refugee rights and state obligations. The principle of non-refoulement, central to this convention, prohibits returning refugees to countries where they face threats to life or freedom. In 2018, the United Nations General Assembly affirmed the Global Compact on Refugees, aiming for equitable responsibility-sharing among nations. This framework seeks to ease pressures on host countries, enhance refugee self-reliance, expand access to third-country solutions, and support safe returns to countries of origin.
Despite these frameworks, national policies often vary. For instance, Austria's recent coalition government has temporarily suspended family reunification for refugees and adjusted EU rules on reunification. They've also increased legal powers to seize asylum-seekers' belongings and imposed stricter integration requirements for citizenship. Similarly, the UK has seen a sharp increase in asylum claim refusals for Afghans fleeing the Taliban, with the grant rate dropping from 98.5% to 36%. This leaves many in limbo without the right to work.
Xenophobia and anti-refugee sentiments further complicate the situation. In Germany, Chinese migrants seeking asylum face a volatile political climate, with rising anti-immigrant sentiments and significant electoral success of far-right parties. These attitudes influence policy decisions, often leading to stricter border controls and limited asylum opportunities.
Integration vs. Resistance
Refugees often face significant challenges when integrating into host countries. Language barriers are a primary obstacle. Without proficiency in the local language, accessing essential services, securing employment, and engaging with the community become daunting tasks. This communication gap can lead to feelings of isolation and hinder successful integration.
Cultural differences further complicate the assimilation process. Refugees may experience "culture shock" as they navigate new societal norms and practices. Balancing the preservation of their own cultural identity with the need to adapt can be challenging, potentially leading to internal conflicts and mental health issues.
Economic integration poses another significant hurdle. Many refugees arrive with limited resources and face difficulties in finding employment that matches their skills. The lack of recognition for foreign qualifications and professional experience often forces them into low-paying or unstable jobs, impeding their financial independence and societal contribution.
Despite these challenges, evidence suggests that refugees can have a positive economic impact on host countries. For instance, in the United States, over a 15-year period, refugees and asylees contributed significantly more in tax revenues than the government expenditure on their support, indicating a net positive fiscal impact.
However, public perception often skews negative, fueled by misconceptions about refugees being economic burdens or security threats. This stigma can lead to discrimination and social exclusion, further hindering integration efforts. Addressing these misconceptions through public education and inclusive policies is crucial for fostering a more welcoming environment.
Successful integration requires comprehensive support systems that address these multifaceted challenges. Providing language education, recognizing foreign qualifications, and promoting cultural exchange can facilitate smoother transitions for refugees. Moreover, policies that encourage economic participation and social inclusion not only benefit refugees but also enrich host societies culturally and economically.
A Moral and Humanitarian Imperative
The global refugee crisis is not just a political issue; it is a humanitarian emergency. Millions of people are forced to flee their homes due to war, persecution, and violence. They leave behind everything familiar, only to face new struggles in foreign lands. The trauma of war does not end once refugees cross a border. Many suffer from psychological distress, loss of identity, and the uncertainty of statelessness.
Some nations close their borders, citing security concerns and economic burdens. Others provide asylum but fail to offer proper integration support. This creates a cycle of marginalization, where refugees struggle to rebuild their lives. Furthermore, xenophobia and political resistance make their situation worse, reducing their access to education, jobs, and healthcare.
A world that turns its back on refugees today will face greater instability tomorrow.

What is the To-Do List for Migrating NRI?
Migrating as a Non-Resident Indian (NRI) involves more than just packing bags and booking tickets. It requires strategic planning and a thorough understanding of legal, financial, and logistical requirements. Whether you’re leaving India for the first time or returning after an extended stay abroad, this comprehensive guide will help you cover all aspects of your NRI migration journey.
Key Steps in the To-Do List for Migrating NRIs
1. Avail NRI Relocation Assistance Services
Migrating to a new country involves various formalities, from securing visas to arranging for family relocation. Professional NRI relocation assistance services can simplify the process, ensuring a hassle-free transition.
2. Arrange NRI Mobility Services for Visa and Work Permits
For employment abroad, obtaining the right visa and work permits is crucial. Reliable NRI mobility services for visa and work permits can guide you through the application process, saving time and avoiding errors.
3. Manage NRI Mobility Support for Family Relocation
If you’re moving with your family, specialized NRI mobility support for family relocation ensures that your loved ones also transition smoothly to your new destination. This includes school admissions, housing arrangements, and cultural adaptation assistance.
Financial Preparations Before Migrating
4. Intimation of Changing Status to NRI
One of the first things on your checklist should be informing your bank and other financial institutions about your status change to NRI. Intimation of changing status to NRI ensures compliance with regulatory requirements under FEMA.
5. Ensure FEMA Compliance
Migration involves adhering to India's FEMA compliance regulations, which govern foreign exchange and investments. Failure to comply could lead to legal complications in managing your assets or income in India.
6. Secure Power of Attorney to Relative in India
Granting Power of Attorney to a relative in India can be a practical solution for managing your property, bank accounts, or investments in your absence. Ensure the Power of Attorney is properly documented and registered.
Managing Assets in India
7. Organize Your Assets in India
From property to investments, having a clear picture of your assets in India is essential. Decide whether you want to retain, lease, or liquidate assets before migrating.
8. Opt for NRI Property Mobility Services
For NRIs owning real estate in India, NRI property mobility services assist in managing, renting, or selling properties with minimal hassle.
Financial Repatriation and Taxes
9. Plan for Repatriation of Funds to India
Migrating abroad doesn’t mean leaving your financial obligations behind. Understanding the process of repatriation of funds to India helps you remit money seamlessly for investments or supporting family members.
10. Explore NRI Repatriation Services
Reliable NRI repatriation services can assist in transferring income, assets, or inheritances back to India, ensuring compliance with FEMA and taxation laws.
Additional Considerations for Returning NRIs
While the focus of migration is often on leaving, some NRIs may plan to return to India eventually. Returning NRIs should stay updated on policies governing repatriation of assets, investments, and residency status.
