[ad_1] Days after External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar’s visit to Pakistan for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation or SCO meeting, India and Pakistan announced on Tuesday that they have agreed to extend the agreement on the Kartarpur Corridor, which allows visa-free travel by Indian nationals to the gurdwara built at the Pakistani site where Guru Nanak spent the last years of his life. The Indian side has again urged Pakistan not to levy any fee or charges on Indian nationals using the corridor following continued requests by pilgrims for the removal of the $20 service charge levied by Pakistan on every pilgrim, the external affairs ministry said in a statement. “It has been agreed between India and Pakistan through diplomatic channels to extend the validity of the Agreement on Sri Kartarpur Sahib Corridor for a further period of five years,” the statement said. The agreement was signed on October 24, 2019, to facilitate the visit of Indian nationals to Gurdwara Darbar Sahib Kartarpur at Narowal in Pakistan’s Punjab province, was valid for five years. “Extension of the validity of this Agreement will ensure uninterrupted operation of the Corridor for use by the pilgrims from India to visit the holy Gurdwara in Pakistan,” the ministry statement further added. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar also posted about it on social media platform X, writing “India and Pakistan have renewed the agreement on Sri Kartarpur Sahib Corridor for the next five years. On the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, Kartarpur Corridor will be opened to visit Kartarpur Sahib Gurudwara. No doubt it is a historic move by the government of India and Pakistan. Let us tell you that, on 24 October 2019 India has signed the agreement with Pakistan on the modalities of the operationalisation of the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor at Zero Point, the International Boundary, Dera Baba #Nanak. On 22 November 2018, the Union Cabinet passed a resolution to celebrate the historic occasion of the 550th Birth Anniversary of #gurunanakdevji across the globe. Kartarpur Sahib was established by Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the Sikh Guru in 1522. On 22 September 1539 Gurunanak Dev Ji took the last breath in this gurudwara and spends around 18 years of his life. The Gurudwara was washed away by floods of the river Ravi (Rabi) and the present Gurudwara was established by Maharaja Ranjit Singh. Kartarpur Sahib is located in Narowal district of Pakistan. It is three to four kilometres away from Dera Baba Nanak in Gurdaspur district of Punjab, India and about 120 km from Lahore. The langar was first started in Kartarpur Sahib Gurudwara by Guru Nanak Dev Ji. The Langar tradition is also known as ‘Guru ka Langar’, the Gurus Kitchen. Whoever came here, Guru Nanak Dev Ji did not allow him to go without eating. #gurupurab #kartarpurcorridor #gurunanakdevji #gurunanak #gurudwara https://www.instagram.com/p/B4vjyKznZPO/?igshid=7vfrmucgxtw8

Pakistan and India signed the agreement on Kartarpur Corridor on Thursday, paving the way for its inauguration next month ahead of the 550th birth anniversary of the founder of Sikhism Guru Nanak Dev.
Dr Mohammad Faisal, director general (South Asia and Saarc) at the Foreign Office, and Indian Ministry of Home Affairs Joint Secretary S. C. L. Das signed the agreement at zero line, Pakistan-India Narowal border.
After the signing ceremony, Foreign Office spokesman Dr Faisal said that as per the initiative of Prime Minister Imran Khan, the agreement has been signed while a formal inauguration of the project will be held on November 9.
"[They] were very very difficult and tough negotiations," he said while talking about the several rounds of dialogues between the two sides over the project.
"Under the agreement, the corridor will remain open seven days a week from dawn to dusk," he said, adding that the pilgrims [through the corridor] would arrive in the day and leave by evening.
The FO spokesperson said that the project will facilitate 5,000 pilgrims a day.
"It is the biggest gurdwara in the world. This is how we treat minorities in the country, this is our approach towards minorities. It is in line with the teachings of the Holy Prophet (PBUH)," he said.
He said that the first group of pilgrims will come on November 9. Sharing further details of the agreement, he said the pilgrims who come through the corridor will not require a visa. They will have to carry their passports which will be scanned but not stamped, he said.
Dr Faisal said that under the agreement, the Indian authorities will provide a list of pilgrims 10 days ahead of their visit.
While responding to a question, he said that local pilgrims will also be allowed to visit their sacred place and a pass will be issued to them.
"There is no change in the country's position on India-occupied Kashmir," he said while responding to a question.
The agreement was finalised after three rounds of negotiations. The negotiations were protracted because of deep differences on various provisions of the agreement, the Pulwama stand-off, Indian reservations over the composition of the committee set up to look after the affairs of the corridor, and elections in India.
