i saw that one disability-related post a while ago about dental care but i can't find it again so i'm gonna mention a few things as a (mild to moderately) mentally & physically disabled person, whose teeth hurt when i eat sweet stuff now + i've had a root canal due to a fall + i'm learning to take care of myself, that may or may not help other folks with their dental routine
note: i am not a dentist & this info is mostly what i've gleaned secondhand from dentists, so yeah, i am not an expert in any capacity
water flossers aren't as effective as regular flossing (doing both is actually what's most effective) but they're better than nothing & helpful in cases where coordination problems or other issues might prevent regular flossing technique (i imagine this also depends on the quality of the water flosser)
if you use one of the plastic pre-made floss picks things, rinse the string off in-between each time you use it to floss one side of a tooth, it's tedious but it mimics moving to a new (clean) part of the thread like you do with regular floss
if you get an automatic toothbrush, get one that does circular rotation rather than just vibrating or whatever, as this mimics the tools they use in a dentist's office + imitates the circular motion you're expected to make with a standard toothbrush (which is also hard with coordination issues), i got one that does this pretty cheap from walmart (it's an oral-b but i forgot the specific type) + it automatically times it for you
if you have white spots on your teeth that are uneven with the shade of the rest of the tooth those are potentially white spot lesions due to demineralization; whitening products can make this worse rather than help it, but some products can help with remineralization such as mi paste topical tooth creme, which contains calcium and phosphate (i have yet to try this myself but it seems to get suggested by a lot of dentists, orthodontists, etc. for white spots on teeth & it's also supposed to help with sensitivity and tooth health in general because the white spots are lesions so it's not purely cosmetic!)
it's advised to not rinse your mouth immediately after brushing as this potentially dilutes & reduces the effects of the flouride (if you use fluoride toothpaste), stuff says to wait at least 15 minutes or so
just giving your teeth a quick scrub (even if it's without toothpaste and just water) is better than not brushing your teeth at all
if you have trouble seeing a dentist for financial reasons, try to see if there are income-based or charity dental services in your area, sometimes dental schools also provide low-cost/free dental care
that's all i can think of for now, i wish i had more advice for people who struggle to be able to brush their teeth at all in general but this is all i got unfortunately :(
additionally - you're not bad, useless, gross, or a failure if you struggle to (or can't) maintain oral hygiene; this stuff is much easier for some people than it is to others & those who take it for granted like to forget that, no one deserves to be mocked or looked down on for being disabled & struggling to/not being able to do """basic""" stuff like this!

Hilarious that AI wouldn’t even be a problem if it weren’t for our generous friend capitalism. The use of ai wouldn’t matter if people weren’t constantly struggling to survive. It truly WOULD just be another tool. But the wonderful thing is that isn't the world we live in right now. Everything exists in relation to that around it. AI can’t exist outside the context of capitalism in the same way cars can’t exist outside of it. Generative ai is such an incredible reflection of how capitalism affects art. It’s so incredibly obvious to see this in the ways that various creative industries are being impacted by this like “implementation” of ai, and the looming dread that creatives feel without having some kind of protection against ending up without a reliable source of income to live. Capitalism thrives on cutting corners and gen ai is this like perfect invention to do that. We can forgo paying someone to write and review this article by feeding it through an automatic algorithm that can complete it for us, never mind the chances of including the wrong information and garbled mess of words, the only thing that matters is the completion and profit. Why would we pay someone to go through and design a viable character when we can skimp on it and let the noise machine give us something to work with. Forget about cross review or anything like that then we’d have to pay people to do it. Why would I learn how to paint and all the techniques and intricacies and histories of why we make art and the journey when I can use an algorithm to give me what I want. I want the product. I only care about the product. The end is all that matters. Why care about knowing how to love the process? I want the product. Show me the product.

What is your NUMBER ONE headcannon for each person in the Gaang (Katara, Zuko, Aang, Toph, Sokka, Suki [and Appa and Momo if you feel so inclined])
Katara: After the war, she goes back to the NWT to train with Yugoda and becomes a master healer as well as a master of the NWT fighting style. From there, she goes back to the Foggy Swamp Tribe and masters their bending style, too. With the help of Sokka, Zuko, and (in some headcanons) Hama, she also rediscovers SWT waterbending and not only masters it, but teaches it to the new benders in the SWT. By the time she leaves the SWT, there has been a school established where all bending styles are available for study. She's one of the few who actually has mastered them all, though.
Sokka: He is eager to return home after the war. He throws himself into infrastructure and policy revamps, and he almost singlehandedly staves off the soft colonization attempts of the NWT. Under his efforts, the SWT rebuilds and reestablishes parts of its culture that had been lost during the war. With the discovery of oil on SWT land, he is also instrumental in establishing eco minded extraction techniques, and in trade ties with the rest of the world (although he is very much helped by his sister's deep ties with the Fire Lord). It's a surprise to no one when he's chosen to lead the SWT after Hakoda retires.
Toph: She does not become a cop. Instead, she goes back home and takes over the Earth Rumble, taking it from an underground even to a world wide phenomenon. She eventually allows benders of other elements to join, and the Earth Rumble becomes pro bending. She does also establish a metal bending school. In the end, she is wealthier than her parents, but because she couldn't really care less about money, she keeps enough to live at the standard she wants, and gives the rest away to causes that interest her...like the guy who wanted to set the record for the biggest bao bun ever, and needed funding for an oven big enough to cook it. She also establishes a halfway house for runaway teens.
Zuko: During his tenure as Fire Lord, he establishes a robust social services program that includes subsidized healthcare, education, and housing for the lowest income families. Under his reign, the Fire Nation becomes home to some of the earliest pioneers of mental health. At his wife's advice, he also makes paid maternity leave standard across the nation, and includes several programs to help single parents stay afloat. Taking inspiration from the SWT, Zuko makes some changes to how his advisory staff is selected. Instead of choosing from among the nobility, Zuko has the different provinces elect a representative to speak on their behalf. A lot of the nobles hate this, blaming his wife's influence, but the people adore their monarchs and despite their best efforts, there's little the nobles can do except start campaigning in their home provinces. It's not a perfect system, but it does open the door for the Fire Nation to end the monarchy within a couple of generations.
Suki: She continues to lead the Kyoshi Warriors for a few years after the war. She also helps train troops around the world as they pivot from active war service to more local work. She helps establish something like the coast guards for several different countries. Eventually she retires from that to help her husband run the SWT. She and Sokka make a wonderful team as he handles the domestic policies and she handles foreign affairs. She often jokes with her sister in law, Fire Lady Katara that they ended up with the same job.
Aang: I'll go with my most optimistic headcanon for him. He's an okay Avatar. Not great. Not the worst. After the war, he tries to take part in rebuilding efforts around the world, but he finds his help isn't needed much. He turns his attention back to salvaging what's left of the Air Nomad legacy, and discovers that there are actually airbenders still around. A few of them are even interested in learning to live like the Air Nomads. Many of them aren't, though, and after learning how to actually use their powers, they go off and do their own thing. To Aang's shock and dismay, eating meat has no effect on the strength of their bending, He does learn to deal with it and enjoy his time with the air benders who embrace the Air Nomad culture. He does go on to have kids, and he still favors the benders over the nonbenders. Ultimately, his legacy as Avatar boils down to taking Ozai's bending, and that's it.

I don’t usually have many thoughts but one thing that’s been on my mind this past week (or more? time has blended into a continuous stream of insanity) is how absolutely iconic Elain Archeron and Helion Spell-Cleaver would be as a friendship duo. Yes yes Lucien I just found out you’re my son and my sole hair but your girlfriend is a SEER and can you ask her if she wants to have lunch with me later because I have so many ✨questions✨. No you can’t come you’ll only distract her, I’ve seen the way she looks at you. Helion is literally a human sized library of knowledge and there she is, casually wielding an ancient power that has been lost to Prythian for generations. Helion wants to talk to her and write down everything, from the feeling of an incoming vision to her favourite gardening techniques cause yeah we may have strayed off topic but have you seen the greenhouse at the very top of the palace, Elain? The flowers there need proximity to the sun to bloom and I bet you’ve never seen anything as beautiful as them before (Lucien chimes in here going well, Father, she wakes up right beside me every morning so— “NOT NOW LUCIEN”)
And Elain is completely mesmerised by him too, and she finds herself surprised when she realises that, other than her mate, Helion might be the very first real friend she’s made in her entire adult life. He’s the sun personified and it’s impossible to stay away from him and yes, I would love to have tea with you at the greenhouse later so we can gossip about our mates and the fire in their blood. He gifts her a Pegasus for her and Lucien’s mating ceremony, one of the most prized ones from his collection, and Elain tears up a little at the family the Mother has blessed her with.
Anyway, besties Elain and Helion. That’s it that’s the post

I swear this is the last time I bring up that air tanker in 2x14 voluntarily. The bottom line is, if you believe Tommy did fly that plane, that makes him not even superhero level cool, but Jonny Kim level cool. If you believe he didn't, then he's just as cool, always knowing a guy from all walks of line, ready to help out with whatever resource on hand the second Chimney says the word. At the end of the day, he saved the 118 and a bunch of civilians either way, and he did it again in S7 flying to that cruise ship. He'll always be our cool heroic pilot no matter what.
With that being said, I have some thoughts about the CAL FIRE line from the news reporter in that episode. If you're not interested, please read no further. And if you don't want to see this kind of posts at all but still want to read my other content, please block the tag #aviation realism.
I know Bobby said "217 incoming" when he saw that C-130, only the news reporter mentioned it was with CAL FIRE. That's why I suspect the CAL FIRE line was shoved in after the actual scenes were filmed, because they realized or someone explained to them how impractical and dangerous for an urban fire department to own a giant air tanker and just dump tons of water all over the city.
I saw the same technique utilized for the tsunami arc in S3. Anyone who has taken geography in high school can tell that in reality, there is no megathrust fault capable of generating Indian Ocean 2004 or Japan 2011 scale tsunami off the coast of SoCal. So where did the tsunami come from? In 3x02, before Sue asks Maddie to "triage" the dispatchers, you can hear once again a news reporter saying the tsunami is triggered by an earthquake off the coast of Alaska. This takes the fictional tsunami scenario from having zero basis in real life, to possible in extreme cases and greatly exaggerated for dramatic effect.
I thank whatever divine intervention or persistent technical advisor that made the CAL FIRE line possible.
2x14 was first aired on April 15, 2019. What you might not remember or realize is that something notable happened across the Atlantic on the very same day: the Notre-Dame fire. The entire world watched the cathedral burned for hours while over 400 firefighters all over Paris tried to contain the flame. A certain f...... former US president then suggested on Twitter that "perhaps flying water tankers could be used to put it out."
The French immediately responded by pointing out that dumping large amount of water from an aircraft at low altitude could "weaken the structure of Notre-Dame and result in collateral damage to the buildings in the vicinity." A retired FDNY battalion chief also told the media that water bombing would likely make the situation more dangerous, as civilians on the street might be hit if you miss the target.
The entire internet was clowning on that stable genius for such an innovative idea all afternoon. Imagine if 2x14 aired later that evening with not even a smaller single engine one, but a large 4 engine airtanker somehow belonging to the LAFD, that would come off extra stupid, even meme inspiring. But with the CAL FIRE line, they could at least claim that it was the extreme and rare circumstances requiring additional assistance from other agencies in the area, and it was not part of 911-verse LAFD's normal operation.
If the writers had done their homework beforehand and the CAL FIRE thing was always part of the script, good for them. If it was indeed shoved into the scene last minute, then they should thank their lucky stars.
I can already imagine the headache Bobby is going to have working on Hotshots as a consultant.

Demon Busters Interlude (1)— Muichirou, Senjurou, and Nezuko!
Tumblr media
This took a while but here’s the next installment of the Demon Busters au! This one focuses on Muichirou, Senjurou, and Nezuko. If you aren’t familiar with Demon Busters you can check out the previous part here! In short, this is a modern kny au where people have been dying to demon attacks at alarming rates, so the Demon Slayer Corps went through a massive update and rebrand, now they are called the Demon Busters!
—Lore Dump Incoming!—
In this au Muichirou, Senjurou, and Nezuko are best friends and form an unlikely trio of a demon, a hashira, and a normal kid. The word “normal” is used loosely here since despite coming from a long line of fire hashira, Senjurou Rengoku just can’t seem to get it together. No matter how hard he trained he just couldn’t get a grip on the techniques of fire breathing that have been passed down in his family for generations. As a result, he gave up on it altogether choosing to do what most kids his age do and go to school.
Muichirou and Senjurou were introduced by Kyojuro. They go to the same school, and even though they didn’t seem to get along initially they were able to connect with each other despite the Muichirou’s constant absences and horrible memory. After Senjurou’s brother passed way in the battle with upper moon 3, Senjurou met Nezuko when he was introduced to Tanjirou. He thought Nezuko was strange since she was a Demon Buster despite being a demon herself. It made him wonder, if Nezuko was able to slay demons despite being one what was stopping him from slaying demons? Despite everything, they became fast friends.
If you were to ask these three how they became such close friends in the first place, there would probably be a weird jumble of answers. The truth is, they all met because of Tanjirou in some way. They all knew him, and then they all got to know each other, then one thing led to another and they found themselves hanging out with each other. Muichirou and Nezuko get into all kinds of mischief, demon related or not. Senjurou tries his best to help them but sometimes he just can’t, which is probably why Genya became part of their little group as well. Genya doesn’t come around often, being busy with Demon Busting and all, but there’s never a dull moment when he’s around.
Even though he can’t be around his friends all the time, knowing that they’re there gives Senjurou solace. Before he met them, he felt so lonely all the time. He didn’t really get along with a lot of his classmates at school and talking to his dad was…. Not the best idea. On top of that he couldn’t even get into the Demon Busters. His only true friend was his older brother, (and Ms. Kanroji who came to visit sometimes) but even their friendship didn’t last forever as his death came so suddenly. After he died, Senjurou felt truly alone. Until he met his friends, that is. His brother’s death brought him closer to Muichirou and caused him to meet more people in the Demon Busters. Now, with a life that isn’t perfect, but full of laughter Senjurou isn’t a loner anymore, and he gets a front row seat to the hijinks that ensue in the life of a Demon Buster!
———
Thanks for reading this lore dump! Muichirou, Senjurou, and Nezuko’s friendship is a very important part of this au and they are extremely silly together! Also this isn’t mentioned in the lore dump, but Muichirou is into photography because it helps him with his memory (I’ll tell you more about this later). Thank you guys so much for your support on this silly au! The new episode that came out actually destroyed me since I know what’s about to happen, and this is my way of coping. See you guys in the next one!!

the live2d commission market is about to crash. if that's your main area of income rn start diversifying because the lowest rungs of AI models are capable of generating a perfect model sheet about one in six throws already and it will be a matter of months before you can get a fully cut-up and ready-to-rig model in fifteen seconds for free, and it won't look like How to Draw Anime as a bonus. guaranteed there are already models being run privately that are doing this already. guaranteed there are multiple high end artists and vtubers already using mostly- or entirely-AI rigs already.
the subculture is completely unprepared to deal with this, I watched a bunch of "this artist SCAMMED their clients with AI!" videos by someone claiming to be an expert this weekend and without exception every "tell" she used to "prove" the drawing was AI generated (such as earlobes being unrealistic and not matching each other) was normal fuckups and bad drawing techniques I've been seeing in anime art both Western and Japanese for twenty years (because the medium doesn't prioritize anatomy or realism and never has). the dumbest arguments and cancellations imaginable are going to happen continuously for however long it takes for generic animu drawings to settle into lowest common denominator robot-replicable status in the public consciousness
to be clear I think it's unethical to tell someone you drew something by hand when you didn't and I personally would not sell commissions or any other art that way and don't approve of people scamming with free pictures they got from Bing AI. but we're going to have to face up to "world's most popular pulp art forms are the ones most correctly generated by the AI models because they have the most plentiful training data and especially when it almost all looks the same even when humans are doing it".
girl with very few exceptions for a very few particular artists with very distinct styles (Bing AI couldn't give me a decent Kaneoya Sachiko today) you do not actually care who drew the half nude 14 year old on that body pillow. be honest. you pretended to start caring about it for the first time this year and you will stop caring about it again soon

On the subject of Dinosaur Documentaries...
So Life On Our Planet dropped a few days ago, another installment of this seeming boom of these kind of shows since Prehistoric Planet last year, and it got me thinking about this whole little niche genre.
Tumblr media
The very first "Paleodoc" was released in 1922, made by the Carnegie Museum of Natural History to educate museum goers on how the fossils they saw were collected and prepared. This began the format I like to call the "Talking Heads" Paleodoc which is mainly in the form of interviews or narration over actual footage of Paleontologists at work with the occasional "Live" Dinosaur for visual aid. These are by far the most common form of dinosaur documentary you'll find, even today, mainly because they're cheap to produce and fit in the general style of most science documentaries.
For many decades throughout the 20th century, Paleodocs were pretty rare. They would pop up time to time, and with the sudden influx of attention they got after Jurassic Park, we got some really good ones. Yet they were all the same Talking Head types. What really changed the game was the good ol Magnum Opus of the field: Walking With Dinosaurs.
Tumblr media
WWD pioneered the second type of Paleodoc I believe to exist, which are the "In Their World" Paleodocs. These are different in the fact they focus almost entirely on the live visual aids, with the human presence being limited to narration or brief pauses for context. They're meant to simulate the modern nature documentary, like Planet Earth, that focus more on showcasing animal behavior with state of the art filming techniques than being a source of in-depth science.
The success of WWD cannot be overstated, and I have to say I do find the In Their World format a lot more engaging and easier to connect with. They portray the wonder of prehistory spectacularly, letting audiences get emotionally connected in the animal characters the story creates, even if this has lead to criticisms of anthropomorphism. These programs also almost always use real footage of modern day earth for their prehistoric creatures to roam on, which I'm sure is very sad for the people who want to see their favorite dead plants on screen.
The Walking With... series would expand into sequels and spin-offs and Nigel Marven, and other companies like Discovery would jump on the bandwagon and release their own takes on the concept, but by the mid 2010s the format had basically died out. We'd get one or In Their World style doc every few years until we just didn't get anything. Outside of the occasional TV special that reused When Dinosaurs Roamed America footage, it was empty.
It took until Disney's Live Action remake of The Lion King of all things for that pendulum to start swinging again. Seeing those expressionless CGI cats got Jon Favreau thinking about how he could use this technology and the talented people behind it to make something really cool, and we got Prehistoric Planet.
Tumblr media
And, in a repeat of Walking With Dinosaurs, we're seeing more of these In Their World type shows. The original guys behind WWD are even making a comeback with their own series, Surviving Earth. Plus even more little hints and rumors of massive incoming projects from overexcited paleontologists trying not to break their embargo.
It looks like the 2020s will be another resurgence in these types of spectacle Paleodocs, and while a good ol Talking Head will always be there, I can't help but get excited for these animated spectacles and all the weird and wonderful ways they flash those visual aids across our TV screens.

While it’s stupid that people are arguing that AI art has no “soul”, it’s troubling that you made no mention at all of the concern many have about feeding AI with stolen art when you were clowning that ask. Just because that person was an idiot about that one part of the ask doesn’t mean they were an idiot about the other part.
firstable, the art isn't stolen. it is still on the artist's hard drive/website/portfolio. complaining about digital files being "stolen" makes you sound like the RIAA.
secondly, before you start arguing semantics about how "well obviously i didn't mean they were LITERALLY stolen, just used without permission," that's not even true either. the current legal theory they're operating on (until it gets challenged in court) is that the AI's output qualifies as a "transformative work", meaning it doesn't violate the original artist's copyright. your kneejerk reaction to this might be to expand copyright law to make this kind of use illegal, but that would also necessarily outlaw a LOT of art forms/techniques, like fanart, fanfiction, collaging, sampling, etc.
at a base level, these AIs aren't doing anything humans weren't already doing - human artists have been taking inspiration from other artists since the first cave painting. anyone telling you the AI is "just mashing together parts of existing art" or whatever has 1. no idea how AIs work because that aint it and 2. no idea how copyright works since "collaging parts of existing art" (which, again, is not what they're doing) is already explicitly protected as transformative work. we don't know enough about how humans OR AIs think to conclusively say that the way one makes art is quantitavely different than the other, and trying to make ethical or God forbid LEGAL judgements based on this imaginary, unmeasurable difference is a losing proposition from the start. there are reasons to be wary of AI art, but "the way an AI views my art and uses it to generate output is fundamentally different than how a human would do it, and that difference means that i am being wronged somehow" rings a bit hollow to me.
to be clear, there are definitely valid reasons to be wary of/dislike AI art. the main one that inevitably comes up is the impact it will create with artists who work on commissions. why would someone pay $50 and wait a week to get a picture of their fursona/concept art for their video game world when they could just punch a few sentences into an AI and have dozens of pics for cheap basically instantly? setting aside the obvious answer of "because most AIs actually suck at drawing really specific things", i feel like this is akin to complaining that the invention of the camera/daguerreotype put professional portrait painters almost entirely out of business. yeah, it did, and that sucked for them, but nobody would ever suggest boycotting the camera for those painters' benefit because that's the nature of technological advancement baybee!
also not to be a communist on main but i NEED to point out the possibly insultingly obvious fact that this is an issue with capitalism, not the "integrity of art" or whatever. the main negative impact the technology has on artists is potential loss of income due to competition, which would stop being an issue if your ability to stay alive was decoupled from your ability to work/sell your labor.

It's been a long year and it's only February…
Well, it's time to put this out there: I've had a fairly shitty few years (like, haven't we all, obviously), but it's included a long, expensive legal battle against unscrupulous cysts, which is finally concluded satisfactorily save being left somewhat skint on the other side of it. Doesn’t help that said battle meant that I had to move house - not exactly a low activity on the expense and stress scales…
So I'm looking for extra work, to help while we wait for the Luxury Space Communism to kick in (I'd settle for Universal Basic Income or an end to the Housing and Cost of Living Crisis, tbh).
Things I do to a professional standard include:
Creative Mentoring and Tutoring (writing and performance techniques, especially for poetry - bespoke or standard workshops available for groups as well as one-to-one).
Project Management (feeling overwhelmed by a project you want to get off the ground and/ or run within budget and timescale? I can help with that).
Business Change Management (you need to expand or shift your business focus? I can help that happen in a well-managed fashion).
Performance Poetry (got a bunch of poems, 18 years' experience delivering them live, and a nice voice).
Writing to Commission (especially poetry, but I write both fictive prose and essays too).
Voice Acting and Narration (I've acted in audio dramas and narrated short stories, training videos, and so far one documentary).
Book and Pamphlet Production (I operate a small press).
Basic website setup and maintenance.
Training on any of the above.
I have a sliding scale of rates depending on customer circumstances, and you can book me for a free initial consultation via my website: https://www.fayroberts.co.uk/crass-commercialism/services/
And if you fancy just sending me money because you're generous, I have a ko-fi: https://ko-fi.com/fayroberts

Jeff Goldblum warning us in Jurassic Park that cloning dinosaurs is raping mother nature was apparently an instruction manual and not a warning.
Tumblr media
"Colossal Biosciences, a biotechnology company founded in 2021, is working to genetically resurrect the woolly mammoth by combining its genes with Asian elephant DNA. The company's goal is to create a hybrid species, called a "mammophant", that will look and behave like a woolly mammoth. Colossal plans to use cloning techniques similar to those used to create Dolly the sheep in 1996, inserting genetically edited cells into an elephant egg that would then be gestated by a surrogate elephant. The company has said it intends to complete the project by 2027."
Tumblr media
Exploitative KKKapitalism = Eating like 💩 in the neighborhood! "Studies have shown that the prevalence of fast-food restaurants is positively correlated with the percentage of Black residents in urban neighborhoods in the U.S. Similar trends have been found for liquor stores."
$Anything for a Dollar$
"While dollar stores can fill a need in low-income neighborhoods, they are often regarded as predatory businesses that harm communities more than they benefit them, due to very low wages, displacing other grocery options while failing to sell fresh food, store design that increases the rate of armed robberies, and OSHA and FDA violations that put customers and employees at risk."
Who Needs Fresh Food?
Tumblr media
"There are no fresh vegetables, fruits, or meats in most dollar stores. And yet, as limited as their offerings are, dollar stores are now feeding more Americans than Whole Foods is, and they’re multiplying rapidly. Since 2011, the number of dollar stores nationwide has climbed from about 20,000 to nearly 30,000. There are now more dollar stores than Walmart and McDonalds locations combined."
Dollar Tree Customers = Permanent Underclass
Tumblr media
"In their latest annual reports, Dollar General and Dollar Tree say they have identified thousands of new locations for dollar stores. The two chains are planning to expand their combined empires to more 50,000 outlets."
“Essentially what the dollar stores are betting on in a large way is that we are going to have a permanent underclass in America,” Garrick Brown, a researcher with the commercial real estate firm Cushman & Wakefield, told Bloomberg last year.
“The economy is continuing to create more of our core customer,” Dollar General chief executive Todd Vasos told investors last year.
Tumblr media
"More than one-third of American adults, and 48 percent of African American adults, are obese."
13% of the US population is Black, and 48% of Black Americans are obese.
Tumblr media
"Look at the pharmaceutical companies. In my neighborhood, there is a fast-food restaurant on every block, from Wendy’s to Kentucky Fried Chicken to Popeye’s to Little Caesar’s Pizza. Now drugstores are popping up on every corner, too. So you have the fast-food restaurants that of course cause the diet-related diseases, and you have the pharmaceutical companies there to fix it."
Tumblr media
"If you give people access to really good food and a living-wage job, someone is going to lose money. As long as people are poor and as long as people are sick, there are jobs to be made. Follow the money."
Tumblr media
"I talk about power, and how power is a drug and power over people is a drug and it’s hard to give up."
Tumblr media
"A substantial body of evidence indicates that diet, toxic metals, food additives, insufficient nutrients, food allergy, lack of exercise can all contribute to criminal behavior. Evidence is mounting that a good diet makes a positive difference when working with some offenders."
Tumblr media
"Our estimates imply that the 42% drop in the natural gas price in the late 2000s, mostly driven by the shale gas boom, averted 12,500 deaths per year in the United States."
Tumblr media
"Participants (60.55%) experienced unexpected or increased medical expenses (17.69%), job loss (13.64%), pay reduction (11.85%), and death of a family member (9.09%). Pay reduction and increased debt were associated with moderate hunger; death of a family member, pay reduction, and increased debt were associated with severe hunger."
Lung Cancer to Avoid Severe Hunger
Tumblr media
"In unadjusted models, annual household income <$15,000, non-urban residence, lack of health insurance, unstable housing, heavier food pantry reliance, fair or poor adult health, adult anxiety, and adult smoking to reduce hunger pangs were all positively associated with VLFS-C."
Fast Food = Fast Death
Tumblr media
"Survey respondents had 8 ± 7 fast-food outlets within 2 miles of their home. Individuals living in close proximity to fast-food restaurants had higher BMIs, and lower fruit and vegetable consumption."
Happy Meal = Psychiatric Distress & Violence
Tumblr media
"Consumption of fast food has been linked to psychiatric distress, violent behaviors, and impulsivity in adolescents."
Tumblr media
"The analysis found that liquor stores are disproportionately located in predominantly black neighborhoods, even after controlling for census tract socioeconomic status."
Tumblr media
"At equal levels of poverty, Black neighborhoods had the fewest supermarkets."

CAN A GALAXY BE INVISIBLE??
Blog#373
Wednesday, February 7th, 2024.
Welcome back,
Finding new galaxies is a tough task. But a group of researchers from the International School of Advanced Studies (SISSA) say they’ve discovered a new galaxy in a relatively young universe, all thanks to Albert Einstein’s enduring theory of relativity.
“This was a very special celestial body,” Marika Giulietti, who studies astrophysics and cosmology at SISSA, says in a news release. “It is very bright.”
Tumblr media
The galaxy’s celestial body was so dark and compact that it was almost invisible, the researchers write in their new study, published in The Astrophysical Journal.
“Very distant galaxies are real mines of information about the past and future evolution of our universe,” Giulietti says. “However, studying them is very challenging. They are very compact and therefore difficult to observe.” Add in the distance away, the weak light we get from them, and the prevalence of interstellar dust, and we have a hard time observing these unknown galaxies.
Tumblr media
While scientists have discovered several distant galaxies in recent years, they generally appear “completely invisible even to the most powerful optical instruments, such as the Hubble Space Telescope,” the SISSA scientists write.
So that’s where gravitational lensing comes in. This technique shows that mass bends light, as first predicted with Einstein's theory of relativity. The gravitational field of a large object in space, like a star or a planet, will bend incoming light.
Tumblr media
Because these large bodies have gravitational fields that extend into space (like how Earth can also control the moon), incoming light can get refracted at a large distance. That can distort large regions of space. The bigger the object, the more dramatic the bending
“In this way," Giulietti says, “large celestial bodies act as a kind of enormous cosmic lens that makes the ‘background’ galaxies appear larger and brighter, allowing them to be identified and studies.”
Tumblr media
So far, observation programs using this approach have discovered about 100 celestial bodies. The latest, though, was special, mostly thanks to the brightness. Using a modern sub-millimeter interferometer located in the Atacama Desert of Chile, scientists determined the features of the complex galaxy.
“Our analysis showed that this object is very compact, presumably young, and forming stars at an extremely high rate,” Giuletti says.
