Famous murals from around the world 🎨
Explore some of the world’s best murals, courtesy of MSN!
Tumblr media
Lonac, “Nitpicking” – Rijeka, Croatia
Croatian artist Lonac created this photorealistic mural of a man (his father) focused on the model of a ship for the MMSU Rijeka Spajalica public art project. He used around 100 cans of spray paint with some 50 different color tones and worked seven days to create this piece.
Tumblr media
Hosier Lane – Melbourne, Australia
Perhaps one of the most famous street art locations in the world, Hosier Lane in Melbourne is essentially an open canvas, meaning that any artist can go and add to the murals. The result is an impressive mishmash of different styles. You can get lost in this eclectic lane and revisit many times, having a completely different experience each time.
Tumblr media
Multiple artists – Incheon, South Korea
Incheon’s mural, painted over silos, is the largest outdoor mural in the world, according to Guinness World Records. The mural resembles a set of 16 books and shows the story of a boy growing into an adult.
Tumblr media
Artist unknown, “I love you so much” – Austin, USA
Perhaps not an impressive street mural per se, this phrase, graffitied on the side of Jo’s Coffee on South Congress Avenue in Austin, Texas, has become one of the most famous pieces of street art in the world and an attraction in its own right. Apparently, the owners of the coffee shop, who are a couple, got into a fight and one of them painted this love declaration on the side of the building.
Tumblr media
Petit Champlain Murals – Old Quebec, Canada
Old Quebec is known for its beauty, and the Petit Champlain trompe l’œil murals are no exception. The area between this neighbourhood and Parliament Hill is home to remarkable works of art, including Fresque du Petit-Champlain.
Tumblr media
Muralis – Sherbrooke, Canada
The thing that makes Sherbrooke’s murals special is that Easter eggs are hidden in all of the paintings. Visitors to this city in Quebec are invited to try and find them thanks to an app—which also makes the murals come alive!
Tumblr media
Guido van Helten, “No Exit” – Reykjavik, Iceland
These beautiful black-and-white murals are based on Andrés Kolbeinsson’s photographs of a local production of the Jean-Paul Sartre play “No Exit” in the 1960s. They are located on the Loftkastalinn building, a former theatre space in Reykjavik, Iceland and were pained in the winter of 2013-14.
Tumblr media
Dmitri Vrubel, “My God, Help Me to Survive This Deadly Love” – Berlin, Germany
This political mural depicts a 1979 photograph where Leonid Brezhnev, the General Secretary of the Soviet Union, and Erich Honecker, the General Secretary of the Socialist Unity Party of the German Democratic Republic, share a socialist fraternal kiss.
It is located on the eastern side of the Berlin Wall and has become an emblem of the city.
Tumblr media
Patrick Commecy, multiple murals – France
Patrick Commecy and his team, under the name A.Fresco, have painted over 300 trompe l’œil murals to beautify existing buildings. Each piece is custom to the building it is located on to make sure that it fits the décor and story of the place. This one is “Levallois en fleurs.”
Tumblr media
Millo, “Everyone Is Searching for It” – Milan, Italy
Painted in 2015 and depicting a man searching for love in the big city using a fortune stick and a woman hopefully catapulting her heart, Millo’s Everyone Is Searching for It is a great example of the artist’s signature style.
Tumblr media
Louis Gan, “Brother and sister having fun on the swing” – George Town, Malaysia
George Town is known for its street art (amongst many other things, of course) and this mural, Brother and sister having fun on the swing, is probably one of the city’s most photographed, because passersby can include themselves in the art!
Tumblr media
Banksy, “Girl with Balloon” – London, UK
Arguably one of the most famous murals in recent years, Banksy’s Girl with Balloon was first painted on Waterloo Bridge in 2002, and other similar murals were also painted around London, although none remain today. In fact, in 2018, a framed copy of the painting spontaneously shredded while it was being auctioned, thanks to a mechanical device that the artist had hidden in the frame.
Tumblr media
ChemiS, “House of Cards” – San Nicolas, Aruba
Painted as part of the Aruba Art Fair, ChemiS’s House of Cards takes up the whole façade of the Winter Garden bar restaurant and nightclub. Its trompe l’œil effect is really impressive!
Tumblr media
Comic Book Route – Brussels, Belgium
In 1991, the City of Brussels authorities and the Belgian Comic Strip Center undertook the project of creating a comic strip route in the city of Brussels, covering up plain walls. The project has since grown to over 50 murals.
Tumblr media
Belfast Murals – Belfast, Ireland
Northern Ireland has a complicated and tumultuous political and religious history and the Belfast Murals depict this, highlighting important moments and people of the last 40 years. One of the best ways to visit is with a black cab tour, to admire the works of art and learn about the local history.
Tumblr media
El Mac & Gene Pendon, “Leonard Cohen” – Montreal, CA
Montreal is a city renowned for its street art and holds the annual Mural street art festival. In recent years, two gigantic murals honouring the late Canadian singer, songwriter, poet and novelist Leonard Cohen have sprung up on building façades. The most impressive one is located on Crescent Street and can be admired from the city’s Kondiaronk belvedere.
Tumblr media
Keith Haring, “We the Youth” – Philadelphia, USA
Created in 1987 in collaboration with the CityKids Foundation and restored in 2013, We the Youth is the only Keith Haring mural that remains intact in its original site. The mural was painted to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the United States Constitution and is a play on the phrase “We the people.”
The mural is located at 22nd and Ellsworth Streets in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

A hidden prestigious school where even the K-League Mugosa played
An unexpected reversal occurred in the European Champions League, which is called the 'stage of the stars'. Real Madrid, the famous Spanish club that lifted only the 'Big Year' (the nickname for the Champions League championship cup) 13 times, collapsed in the home. A team from the periphery of Europe, who first participated in the Champions League final, produced a catastrophe.
FC Sheriff Tiraspol (Moldova) beat Real Madrid 2-1 in the second leg of the 2021-2022 European Champions League Group D at Santiago Bernabeu in Madrid, Spain on the 29th with goals from Yasurbek Yakhsiboyev and Sebastien Til pressed Sheriff, who has been sprinting for two consecutive wins in the group stage, has risen to the top of Group D, breaking the expectations of being the weakest before the start.
Sheriff won the victory by counterattacking following defense, which is the cornerstone of the weak team. He was weak in possession of the ball (32-68) and shooting (4-30), but his concentration to not miss an opportunity stood out. It was the start of a miracle when Yakhsiboyev scored the header in the 25th minute of the first half. Sheriff conceded an equalizer from a penalty to Karim Benzema in the 20th minute of the second half, but Thiel scored a dramatic winning goal in the 45th minute of the second half and shot Real Madrid like a wasp, the symbol of the team.
After the match, the Sheriff celebrated the victory by revealing a picture of Real Madrid crowned on an emblem in the shape of a sheriff's badge through social networking services (SNS).
Sheriff captain Frank Castaneda said: “Real Madrid is the best team, but football is played with 11 players. "I was confident we could win," said Thiel, the winner of the winning goal. "We had a really good game, and luckily I scored an amazing goal."
Although Sheriff is a team that represents Moldova in Eastern Europe externally, it is actually the pride of Transnistria, which is fighting for independence. Sheriff, who is away from Moldova, spares no expense in investing to the extent that most of the starting players are foreign players from Brazil, Ghana, Peru, Luxembourg, Malawi and Uzbekistan. Conversely, only six were from Moldova. Founded in 1997, Sheriff has only missed the trophy twice in the Moldova Football League (Divisia Nazionaler) in the 21st century. He constantly challenged himself in the European Champions League and Europa League, and this year he got into trouble.
Sheriff ran without hesitation from the first qualifying round of the European Champions League. In the play-off, which was the last hurdle for their first qualifying, they met Dinamo Zagreb, who is called the strongest Croatian, and won the first and second legs 3-0 on aggregate.
Sheriff's sprint continued into the finals. In the original group draw, it was predicted that Sheriff would be eliminated last after Real Madrid, Inter Milan and Shakhtar Donetsk. However, in the first game, Sheriff defeated the top Ukrainian famous Shakhtar 2-0 and even defeated the champion Real Madrid.
The result was so unexpected that European betting company Bet365 promised to pay 19 times if Sheriff beat Real Madrid. Transfermarkt, a European transfer site, emphasized the fact that the total ransom for Sheriff's squad (17.7 billion won) is one-64th of Real Madrid's (1.97.5 trillion won). If the current trend continues, Italy's Inter Milan, which will meet in the third leg, cannot guarantee victory.
In Korea, sheriff-born players are also a symbol of trust. Montenegro national team goalkeeper Mugosa played as Sheriff for a year before joining Incheon United in 2018. Leandro from Brazil also contributed to the championship with 4 goals and 3 assists in 20 matches before joining Seoul E-Land FC in 2020.

I more or less enjoyed my 3day weekend. I watched my Basketball girls play a game on Saturday morning, they lost, but it was a close loss. I stayed out till like 4am on Sunday hanging out with friends in the bar, and met some cool people out on the town and went to karaoke.
When I got out of bed on Sunday (surprisingly around 10am) I got to snuggle with my partner on LINE because long distance is a thing, and when they crawled into bed I got on my bike and made my way out to Hojo, which is 15km from where I live.1 I took some side trips around the township, so the whole thing ended being 34.59km. My legs hated me. The scenery and fresh air were totally worth it.
Today I did nothing really, I played Fire Emblem on my phone, dicked around on tumblr and then went to karate. I didn’t make it to the grocery store like I had planned as when I checked my wallet I only had a sen yen note (roughly $10). I get paid tomorrow thank goodness.
I’m doing better than I was this time last year, but I’m still struggling with motivation, confidence and people skills. I have no idea how I want my life to turn out after JET, but hopefully I have a couple more years to pull up some course of action. The future is super uncertain and scary, I still struggle with manic highs and lows but compared to where I was this time last year, the year before that and in High School, I’m defiantly making progress.
I’m off to South Korea on Saturday, so hopefully that whole trip goes well. I am nervous about traveling out of country where my phone won’t be as useful for navigation. I need to look into getting pocket wifi while I’m there.
Before all that though, I have to make it to Friday.  Tomorrow I have my last ES classes. On Wednesday I have my last JHS classes and on Thursday my Elementary school has graduation - I will get to see most of the kids who are leaving again at my JHS, but there are few who are going to be going to different schools. Notably one of the boys who is super good at Judo, and one of the girls who bonded with me over our love of ancient history.
It’s going to be my last week teaching with some of the teachers I’ve worked with over the last year and a half, and I have mixed feelings, mainly because I have no idea who is going to be leaving with the teacher shuffle yet...(I hope to god my ES supervisor will move, despite her in depth knowledge about English, I really hate her discipline style and the fact she’s on probation for a bunch of shit involving it. I think she needs to work on her temper and take some classes or something to help her with classroom management before she’s allowed back in the classroom...I’ve seen her do stuff that’s not ok and both myself and the Japanese ALT have reported it to the appropriate people which resulted in the probation, apparently some of the parents also complained after their kids went home and told them about the shit she does...so yeah, really hope I don’t have to work with her for another year.)
I’m really nervous about 4/5 of my JHS teachers moving too. Like I know some of them will, I really hope one of the first year teachers leaves, because again her discipline style is frustrating and the classes I’ve had with her have basically resulted in me having to listen to her scream at the kids for an hour rather than teaching them anything. If I have to deal her next year and similar stuff happens, I’m going to make a point of walking out when she gets started. I’ve tried talking with her about it earlier on in the year and more recently, as have some of the other teachers, but she hasn’t listened.
I know that the first years are a problem year this time around, but the shit she gets all heated about can be easily ignored and they get bored of it, but she reacts to EVERYTHING and the kids know this and play her like a fiddle, she lost any shred of respect they had for her early on in the year and now we have to have like three teachers in the class to keep the lessons on track/catch them up and she wonders why...their grades have been total shit for the most part obviously, but the one first year class that doesn’t have her as a teacher are about where they need to be. As for the rest of them I am DREADING having classes with them next year...hopefully we get a strong English teacher, the one we currently have would be fantastic, his style of teaching would work really well with this bunch of kids, and it’d be no worries that most of them haven’t been paying attention in their first year because he did a fantastic job of the review units last year as well as the make up classes, but I’m almost 99.9% sure he has to move this year as he’s one of the younger teachers.
Despite all of this, I’ve really been enjoying the other classes I’ve had with the other teachers. I love all my students, even the little shits, and I bawled my eyes out at JHS graduation. I wouldn’t change my placement for anything.
I have Karate on Wednesday night, no Japanese lessons until April and a bunch of small errands I have to run before Friday. I’m probably going to sleep on the bus to Osaka, and hopefully the line at Incheon wont be to horrible (but it probably will be...) Now I’m going to crawl into bed and hope the rain stops for at least an hour between 7am-8am tomorrow so I can bike to school without having to wear my stupid rain coat.
