Audeze Penrose Design

The Audeze Penrose headphones come out of the box featuring a clean design. Audeze hasn't pushed the boundaries of design into any new dimensions, and the overall appearance of the headphones is okay, but not great.

The Penrose model features a blue band around the earcup, while the Penrose X (the Xbox version of the headphones) features a green stripe. The colored strip breaks up the black, but you cannot escape the feeling of plastic, which doesn't immediately scream "quality." But although the design doesn't have the wow factor, the Penrose headphones' build quality is plain to see, and the parts feel well made and solidly built.

The artificial leather earpads cover comfy padding, while the earcups themselves are adjustable, both on the ear and at the headband's connection. In terms of weight, 320g is perfectly average for a set of wireless headphones, and once you pop them on and get adjusted, you won't notice them.

One thing I would note is that the Audeze Penrose headphones do have a snug fit. My head isn't particularly large, and the headphones are comfy and form a good seal around my ears. However, those with a larger head might find them less comfortable during a prolonged session. That said, this is speculation, as I don't have a larger head to test with.

You'll find an array of dials and inputs on the left earcup, allowing you to mute, adjust microphone or headphone volume, and switch between the headset's three connection modes. The buttons and dials are all easy to use and responsive enough, and the inclusion of an integrated microphone volume dial is welcome, especially if you regularly play online games.

The power button on the headphones takes a few seconds to activate, which is a little odd, taking around five seconds to switch the headphones on or off. Talking of power, the Penrose doesn't have any battery life indicator. The battery is either working, or not, without any warning. Audeze markets the Penrose with a 15-hour battery life on a single charge.

The headset I was sent lasted for around 13 hours and 30 minutes on average, depending on what I was doing and volume changes during testing. 13.5 hours of playback certainly doesn't put the Audeze Penrose in the top battery bracket, but it's far from the worst, either.

Something to consider is that planar magnetic drivers are more power-hungry than regular dynamic drives, so the Penrose is bound to give something up in battery life. Over 13 hours of playback is enough for most people for a day of work or a prolonged gaming session, so the battery life isn't an issue.

A Note on Handling Planar Magnetic Headphones

The Audeze Penrose planar magnetic design does make it more susceptible to air trapping behind the ultra-thin diaphragm. Audeze recommends that you take care when putting your Penrose and Penrose X headphones on, giving them a moment to adjust to the difference in air pressure after creating a seal around your ears.

As per Audeze customer support:

We recommend exercising certain cautions when handling planar magnetic headphones: trapped air can create high pressure and sudden pressure changes could damage the diaphragms, and this is not covered by warranty. When you put the headphones on or take them off, it's not a good idea to press them hard and fast against the head, so we recommend slow and steady movement to allow the air pressure to stabilize.

Audeze Penrose Sound Quality

In short, the Audeze Penrose headphones are some of the best-sounding headphones currently on the market. They're nothing short of superb, easily accommodating any genre of music you throw at it, delivering each note, tone, and vocal harmony with precision.

The 100mm planar magnetic drivers allow the headphones to recreate any audio environment accurately, and it's clear Penrose has spent a great deal of time making sure that these headphones can bring your favorite track or game to life.

Interestingly, the Audeze Penrose's overall excellent quality makes it difficult to pinpoint specific areas of distinction. The Audeze Penrose has a companion desktop and mobile app that you can use to adjust or create custom EQs and switch the Sidetone feature on and off. Both the desktop and mobile apps are basic, allowing you to save an EQ preset to the headphones.

One slight irritation is that you cannot connect wireless to the app using the supplied dongle (which is for a 2.4GHz wireless connection for audio). As such, when you want to adjust the EQ on your desktop, you have to plug the Audeze Penrose into your computer using a USB Type-C cable.

“Thank you so much!” I couldn’t contain my emotions as she agreed to help me and I lept forward to embrace her. At that moment, she was the small glimmer of hope I so desperately needed. “Congrats too by the way, I hope I don’t ruin anything for you.”

“Well, I guess I just have to be careful not to get caught.” The wavering confidence in her voice was bound to make me too anxious to even sleep tonight.

I had my earbuds on but there was no sound playing, and no sound to be covering my ears from as I stared blankly at my screen. The only movement I was doing was pressing the spacebar everytime my screen turned dim. There was so much going on in my mind, yet it was empty. I felt empty, but that void was being filled with anxiety.

All I could do right now was wait, but time was precious, especially in Rosé’s case. I looked searched her name to see if there was anything new, or any updates, but there were none. Only the routine “The search continues for local college student”. It made me feel at least a little bit better to know that her case wasn’t dying down and being forgotten.

I was back to my mindless staring until I was rudely interrupted by the one and only, Jungkook.

“Whatcha doin’?” He charmingly asked.

“Nothing!” I was alarmed by his sudden appearance and practically yelled as I slammed shut my laptop. He wasn’t speaking loudly at all, his voice was actually softer than usual. In fact, I was the one being louder than him as I heard several shushes aimed at me, and I inwardly cringed at my stupid behavior. “Goodness gracious.” I mumbled under my breath.

“I’m sorry I didn’t mean to scare you.” He chuckled, and my heart began to race as I came to my senses. I went from being completely unaware of my surroundings, to now being hyper aware of even my own heartbeat. “What were you looking at?” He nodded his nead towards my laptop as he took a seat next to me.

His tall and fit figure was shown with black fitted pants and matching colored shoes. A white long sleeved shirt rolled up to his elbows accentuated his veiny forearms, one of which displayed an expensive looking watch at his wrists. To top it all off (yes pun intended), he wore a signature comfy beanie in grey.

“Hm?...oh— nothing.” I always noticed how he looked due to how long I would stay staring at him.

“Checking me out again?” He seemed to notice, and unfortunately for me, I’m not enough of a smooth talker to get myself out of these kind of situations.

“Sorry.” So I simply apologized his my head held low with shame.

“So you were checking me out” He sneered, however I refused to look at him even with my peripheral vision. Even so I could just feel the heat radiating off his body as he slowly inched closer to continue his teasing.

“I’m gonna go over there.” I turned my back on him and headed for the book shelves as I aimed to get away from him, and also because I actually needed a book for my unnecessarily detailed, five page essay on the history of literature.

He followed me slowly and I could feel his eyes on me, making it that much more difficult to concentrate.

“Shakespear? You haven’t finished the essay yet?”

“No, I haven’t, and in case you haven’t noticed my mind's been a bit preoccupied.” I snapped. He was leaning on the bookshelf with arms crossed over his chest. When I looked at his face his expression was much softer than I had initially expected.

“I know, that’s why I’m not teasing you for it. I’m actually concerned.” I looked away embarrassed for snapping at him so easily. “I can help you if you want.”

“I think I can do it on my own, thanks.” I said with a soft voice. “Sorry...for snapping at you. I’ve just been really stressed.”

“I know.” He said with a soft smile. There was a pause before he turned around and picked something off the bookshelf. A book on criminal psychology. “You could’ve just gone to a library if you wanted to know something about criminological psychology by the way.” He said while waving the book around. I cringed when I realized what he was referring to.

“Hey! What kind of professor actually keeps his stuff on campus though!?” I retorted, and it was true. Most of them brought their work home with them to do, but no, this one actually left his stuff in the room, which was beyond strange.

“He used to forget a lot of his things before, so I heard, so that’s probably why.”

“Are you serious?” I stifled my laugh.

“Yep. He’s really forgetful, but take it easy on him, he’s not as young as he used to be.” He said as he flipped through the book. “You could use this you know...To try and find her.”

Immediately I put back what I as looking at to go over to him. It was something very basic, but it could definitely help. “Too bad you can’t check out anything here...”

“Yeah. Students kept forgetting to return them, so now they’re just not even allowed to take them out unfortunately.”

“It’s sad how often times the actions of a few ends up ruining things for a majority of people...Kind of like how sometimes, if you take out a brick the rest of the wall falls down you know?” His expression had already gone blank by the time I looked at him.

“Are you okay?” He now seemed concerned as he put his hand on my shoulder. The sudden skinship shocked me, and I had to look away to evade his deep gaze. “If it concerns you that much you could’ve just looked it up online.”

“No I’m just sometimes like that— wait...” And then I realized he was just teasing me again.

“I’m serious though, google would’ve been a way safer than breaking into campus like an idiot.”

“Enough with the teasing Jungkook!” I laughed through gritted teeth as I whacked him with a book.

“Excuse me, but there are students trying to study here. If you continue to make noise I’m going to have to ask you to leave.” Said the Librarian.

Jungkook and I looked at eachother, I wanted to see if he was going to stay or not.

“Let’s get out of here” he said with a smirk. I felt my face heat up at his words and I quickly went over to the table to pick up my laptop as he waited to leave with me.

“So... What now?” I was eager to see what he wanted to do. I was looking for anything to distract myself from reality, and he seemed to do that so effortlessly without even realizing it. After a while he finally answered.

“Wanna go bowling?”

Ah the wonderful sport of bowling. Rolling balls, tumbling pins, gutters, and my shattered pride all in one single event.

I don’t hate bowling, but I’m too competitive to participate in a game that I always lose in, which is why I’m always avoiding it unless there’s someone worse than me playing in our group, which there wasn’t.

Jungkooks friends were playing with us as well, apparently they had plans together and he brought me along, the same group I always see him with. But of course I don’t mind since they bought pizza. They chatted amongst themselves as I was enthrawled in the pizza. I felt a bit guilty that within seconds of being introduced to them, I had forgotten their names, and now I was eating all of their food. Above all of that, I wasn’t even paying attention to them, I took out my phone as I wondered what was even my point of being here.

I continued to do what I was doing earlier, and checked the internet for any news aout Rosé’s case. Jungkook was sat next to me, but I didn’t notice him looking at my phone with me. It never dawned on me how we were basically strangers a few days ago, but now he’s introduced me to all of his friends, and

“Nothing new?”

“No.” I responded deflated. I wondered if the detectives were actually doing anything to find her. Made me much more anxious for a message from Jennie. I needed to know what was being done to look for her. But at the same time, I wouldn’t know where to start, it must be rather overwhelming for the police to try and find someone who seems to be everywhere, and assuming Sehun was telling the truth, there was still a big time gap to what was going on.

My thoughts were interrupted by Jungkook telling me it was my turn. It was pretty obvious by now that I was a little less than average at bowling, so I was no longer nervous about going up. I rolled without expecting anything special. I simply stared expecting noting. My heart, elated, began to race as the ball got closer to the pins.

“YES! FINALLY” I raised my fists into the air as my competitive pride was healed. It felt even better to see the other guys rejoice with me. They cheered and clapped. I felt powerful, even if most of them had already gotten strikes and had way better scores, I felt like I was winning even though I was losing.

I went back to my seat with an elated heart towards my crush and new friend. He handed me my phone.

“You got a message, and I read it, sorry. It’s from Jennie.” He said shyly.

I was a bit nervous at that moment wondering what Jennie had sent because Jungkook had read it. Luckily it simply read “Meet me at the Coffee shop at Main St. ASAP.” However, it was still cryptic enough for anyone to be concerned, especially someone like Jungkook for some unknown reason.

“Jungkook, Thank you so much for inviting me, but I have to go. Can you play for me?” I asked as I swung my bag over my shoulders.

“I thought you read it. I’m meeting Jennie at the coffee shop on main.”

“Yeah, but why?” He began to follow me out.

“I asked her to do something for me.”

“Does it have something to do with Rosé?”

“Yeah...” I guess it was obvious considering I hadn’t been caring about anything other than Rosé since she disappeared.

“Let me come with you. I can help” He pleaded.

“No, you stay here with your friends. I’m just going to meet with Jennie. I’ll see you soon though, okay?” I gave him a reassuring smile and hurried off to meet Jennie. He was still looking over when I looked back at him, I waved one last time before exiting.

It was pretty late by the time I had left the bowling alley and I practically ran the whole way there. Not only was I that eager to hear Jennie, but it was also pretty chilly tonight. It was also pretty dangerous at night and Rosé was a perfect example of that.

The moment I entered the café I looked around until I laid my eyes on Jennie who sat at a solitary table in the corner. I approached her breathing heavily from the run, and I called to her out of breath.

“Jennie” She looked up at me, and smiled nervously and motioned for me to take a seat across from her at the table. She reached into her pad and handed me a small notepad.

“Here’s a list of suspects. I looked at Donghae’s notes and wrote these down.” I looked in the notebook and there was a long list of suspects. No wonder they haven’t made a lot of progress. “The suspect list consisted of mostly students from our university, but there were also some from other universities who knew her. This is the list of prime suspects.”

“Sehun is at the top.”

“Yes. I did some asking, he’s been getting interviewed pretty frequently apparently.”

“Then why haven’t they found her yet!?” If Sehun hadn’t shown up, she would still be here, I’m sure of it so it’s obvious that I’m beyond frustrated. “I’m sorry. I’m sure there’s an explanation for this.”

“It’s okay, I feel that way too. Even if he didn’t take her, I think he’s hiding something, otherwise I don’t think they would keep interviewing him.” Her words sparked my attention.

“Why do you say that? Do you know what he’s been saying?”

“Well, I don’t have access to the recordings or anything, but Donghae says there’s a part in his story that seems rehearsed. I don’t know what part, but that’s what he said.”

I looked away as I stayed silent. I’m pretty sure I know what part seemed rehearsed.

In the back of my mind I know this is a terrible idea, but I really need to know the truth. I prepared all day for this, skipping classes in order to finish my homework quickly to leave early.

I was finally done and on my way out, it may not be my best work, but it’s done and one less thing to worry about. It was around twenty minutes to get to the trais station by bus, and then it would be a thirty minute wait, give or take. forty-five minute ride my subway from point A to point B. It was simple really, I would then take me possibly about twenty more minutes on bus to finish the trip.

In total, I had roughly eighty-five minutes, plus walk time and wait time, to mentally prepare myself to confront Sehun. I didn’t know what I would say to him, I just knew I wanted answers.

Finally, I was in front of his dorms. It was dark now, and isolated. Knowing that this was most likely Rosé disappeared chilled me to the bone. The fact that there’s a fact that could happen to me absolutely terrifyed me. Yet, I still stayed there for an uncountable amount of time, too afraid to even move. But I had to face him.

I took a leap of faith and finally decided to walk up to the apartment complex and ring his apartment number. I waited and waiter, for nothing. There was no answer. I didn’t know what to do now, I was standing outside in the cold night, alone in the dark. What was I supposed to do?

Right that moment, someone had come out of the apartment complex, a resident kind enough to let me in. I didn’t hesitate at all and thanked her as I entered the building and looked for his apartment door.

I knocked, but there was no one there. I had made it all the way out here, and there was no turning back now, so I decided to wait a few hours, sat on the floor I fell asleep.

I awoke to the sound of mens voices in the hallway. I was confused for a moment until I realized where I was and what I was doing. I looked up and I saw Sehun. We made eye contact and he froze.

“Y/n...” His expression changed wen he saw me. At first he was laughing and joking around with his friends, and then he looked sad. That was the only was I could describe it, sad. He turned to his friends and bid them farewell before inviting me in. “You guys go in first, I’ll meet you later.”

It was tidier than I had expected, but then again, I didn’t expect him to have a lot of things to have scattered around.

“I see you’ve been good.” I said, venom laced within every word once again.

“I haven’t, actually.” He responded blandly. “What do you want?”

“I came here to talk about that night.” I went straight to the point without beating around the bush.

“I already told the police everything!”

“No, you haven’t. You’re hiding something and I know it."

“What do you mean!?” He was getting more frustrated, more defensive with every word he spoke which only altered my suspitions.

“How is it that she forgot her $500 textbook here then?” I said, pointing at the textbook on his bookself. I knew It was hers by the spine, it had a rose drawn on it so people knew it was hers. She didn’t want anyone to steal it.

He looked over and just swallowed. He didn’t say a word for what felt like an eternity and a half.

“Sehun, please, just be honest. I want to find her....she’s my best friend” I hated the fact that I was so bad at holding back my tears. I honestly couldn’t be just a little agressive without wanting to cry. “What exactly happened?”

It took him a while to actually respond. “It was actually around midnight. We had a fight...She got jealous that I was still talking to my ex.. I told her that we were just friends and we had moved on, but she didn’t believe me. She got angry and she left. She told me she would call you to pick her up.”

“You didn’t tell the police that you guys had a fight!?”

He threw his hands in the air “No! I didn’t! Because how guilty does it make me look? They’d think I did it!” He had a point, but I think that if he really loved her he would throw everything away for her well-being.

“And you didn’t even follow her out? Try to explain yourself?” I retorted.

“I did! But she said that if I kept on following her she would never forgive me. I didn’t want that to happen so I went back as she told me to.” His confession seemed true, but I didn’t know whether or not I truly believed him. He hand his hand through his hair. “I think you should leave now.”

I didn’t have to be told twice. I turned around and slammed the door behind me as I left. I heard him scream in frustration just outside his door, and I felt bad for his neighbors.

I was so heated up from the conversation that the cold air actually felt nice for once. It calmed me down, however that didn’t last long. In the distance I saw I familiar figure leaning against a car. It was Jungkook.

What was he doing here? I guess I’d better ask him.

“What are you doing here Jungkook?” He was everywhere and I was growing increasingly scared of him.

“The better question is, what are you doing here?” He asked back. Maybe it was just me, but there was something in his voice that intimidated me.

“I asked first, so you answered first.”

“I was planning to meet up with a group of friends. You?”

“Does that group include Sehun?”

“Yes. Now stop avoiding the question.” He took a step closer, and I took a step back. He frowned a bit as he noticced me retreating from him. “Y/n...”

“You know him...” Tears pricked my eyes . I felt betrayed and my heart began to ache. I don’t know why that simple fact about him made me question everything I thought I knew about him, but it did.

“He’s a friend of a friend, but I don’t know him well though.” He walked up to me when I didn’t respond.

“No. Stop.” I said through the tears. I was a mess. so many things felt like they were crashing down on me, and I was already naturally emotional.

“Y/n, please, tell me what’s wrong.” There was pain in his voice, but I was more surprised that he actually stopped when I had told him to.

“They fought...but he didn’t say that to the police because then they’d think he did it.” I finally said. He understood how frustrated I was with Sehun right now and he closed off the space between us with a warm embrace. It was a hug that I really needed, and I continued to cry into his chest.

Eventually we retreated into the warmth of his car, where I continued to explain to him what had actually happened when I confronted Sehun.

“Do you still think he did it?” He asked cautiously.

“I don’t know, but I still don’t trust him.”

“We could follow him.” He said, turning off the light in his car.

“What?” I was confused, and then he pointed at Sehun who had just left his apartment complex. “You mean like a stakeout?”

“Exactly. Let me just cancel my plans.” He was going out of his way to help me, and I was so grateful that someone like him exists, and even more that I was able to run into him. My heart fluttered as I saw his face illuminated by the blue light from his phone screen. “Alright, let’s go.”

It was hard to follow Sehun by car since he was walking, but it wasn’t like we could just get out and follow him by foot. There weren’t enough people out at this time so that we would go unnoticed. We stayed inside the parked car and we observed him go inside of a drugstore across the street.

It was oddly quiet between us, and it was starting to make me uncomfortable.

“So...Do you have a girlfriend?” It was such a pitiful attempt at starting a conversation and I mentally slapped myself a hundred times. I guess he noticed how awful my attempt was since he started laughing.

“No, I thought that was obvious.”

“Not exactly..I mean you’re not ugly. Quite the opposite actually I’d say...I hope that doesn’t sound wierd or anything” I was just about to slap myself in real life if I kept this up.

“Do you have a boyfriend?” He asked almost as if it was a joke. He knew I was a loner, yet he still asked.

“I’ve never had a boyfriend. I actually never even had many friends either actually. But I never really minded because I had Rosé.”

“Remember during our first art class when you came in late and disturbed the entire class?”

“Gosh don’t remind me” I cringed remembering my actions. “That was so embarassing I was just starting to forget too.”

“I recognized you, from that party. I remember you kept looking at me. I was just waiting for you to come up to me, but you didn’t.”

“Did you want me to?”

“No actually. I was hoping you wouldn’t and I was quite relieved to see you were trying to avoid me. You even went out of your way to get lost in the crowd.”

“Hahaha ah...yeah...” The mental abuse continued as Jungkooks words pierced me in a way I could only expect.

“I was really in love with my last girlfriend, but she was only using me to make her ex jealous before actually moving on to someone else. I was always something temporary actually. Girls would leave me after they got what they wanted and leave me heartbroken. Since then I told myself I would never fall so easily again and I began to reject every girl who ever confessed.”

I was heartbroken at the thought that someone could possibly be so ungrateful towards such an amazing guy like Jungkook. He’s so perfect, how could anyone just not appreciate him? I couldn’t understand.

“But then you happened.” He continued “When you came into class that first day I thought your reaction was too cute, and I thought you were cute, but so were the other girls who broke my heart. I remember you chased me down to give me back my pencil case, but I left before you could say anything else since I expected you might ask me out or something.” Whenever he would stop talking the only thing I could hear was my heart pounding loudly at his words.

”And then I had the chance to actually talk to you when you walked into the art class. It was obvious you had a crush on me by the fact that you were always staring at me, but you still didn’t talk to me first.”

“So you knew about that...”

“You’re not too subtle.” Ouch. But it’s true. He’d have to be completely dense to not notice. “I thought it was nice that you put your friend first when you went to get her project for her. I think that’s when I started falling for you. I felt so bad for you to hear that your friend had gone missing. You looked so broken I just wanted to put your pieces back together, but I didn’t know how to so I just offered whatever help I could give you. But I wish I could’ve done more.”

“Jungkook, you’ve done so much, and I can’t even begin to tell you how much I appreciate it.” He looked over at me wide eyed and attentive to what I had to say. “But more than anything, I really appreciate your friendship. I was afraid that I would be all alone after Rosé disappeared since I never thought I would need another friend. So thank you for being my friend.”

“I might be” I snickered. It was finally my turn to mess with him and, he laughed at my sassy remark. He looked at me for a moment before pullign me in for a kiss. I paused for a split second before my eyes fluttered shut, and my fingers intertwined with his chocolate locks. His lips felt even softer than I had imagined them to be countless times. It was a short, but very sweet nonetheless and managed to leave me breatheless.

Our eyes met after pulling away and I shyly smiled after telling him it was my first kiss.

But my happy moment was cut short by three loud pops. People began to scream and run away in terror. My heart sank.

Without giving it a second thought, I jumped out the car and started running against the current of people.

“Y/N!” Jungkook called out to me as he began to follow me.

There was nothing in the now empty shop so I began to run through the aisles. The sight before me was absolutely terrifying, yet I just couldn’t look away. I wanted to scream, but nothing came out I was frozen. Because there was Sehun lying face up in a fresh pool of blood.

Comfort with these is a matter of finding the right ear tips. They’re pretty comfy, but after a few hours, the tips start irritating. If you tried all the sizes, and they either slide out or are uncomfortable, then you can just replace them. Foam tips tend to be very comfy and provide a tight fit as well as good noise isolation. This can be a major drawback (You just spent $200 and you have to spend more money), but it can also be a non-issue (you can get a nice pack of different types and sizes of tips for around $10). It all depends on how you see it.

Even though they’re sweat and water resistant the three-button-in-line controls are very affected by it. If moisture gets in, they’ll start working intermittently. The microphone is pretty good, but it can be damaged by this weak point.
