The Great Barrier Reef (Week 5)
After a very memorable trip to Singapore and Bali, it was time to visit the Great Barrier Reef with my summer class. But first, Lauren and I had to take a train from Brisbane to Hervey Bay where we would meet up with our class and fly out to Lady Elliot Island (LEI). The day we had in the 3rd largest Australian city consisted of a lot of walking through the city streets, spotting spiders in the Botanical Garden, and philosophizing about human nature as usual.
We were eager to get on our first Australian train that would take us to Hervey Bay, but after reaching the first stop and halting for the next 3 hours, we had started to lose hope. Apparently a tree had fallen down onto power lines which fell onto the tracks up north, preventing our train from moving forward. Southeast Queensland is notorious for having bad thunderstorms and flooding. With the canceled train and nowhere to stay, all we could do was wait patiently and hope that the train company would coordinate accommodation for us and secure us a train ride for the following day. Luckily, the train company followed through and we got to spend an extra day in Brisbane which we used to walk around some more and then watch Mean Girls in theater (I highly recommend giving it a watch). Seeing how patient and cooperative all the Australians were during all the train chaos was very inspiring and a testament to the lax culture Aussies embrace. Isolated from the rest of the world, people here seem to prioritize self-care and community instead of work and politics. When the weather is this nice all the time, I sure can’t blame them. Soon enough, we found ourselves in Hervey Bay, and then on one of the smallest planes I have ever laid my eyes on for just 12 passengers to get to LEI.
Just like that, I found myself standing on a tiny island that would take only 45 minutes to walk around.
A picture of LEI from the plane.
LEI is the southernmost point of the Great Barrier Reef and it’s known to be a breeding ground for almost 100 different species of birds, 3 species of turtle, as well as countless fish, rays, sharks, and so much more. It’s also home to an eco-resort dedicated to educating visitors about the surrounding coral reefs and wildlife while being fully self-sustainable. Through my class, we got behind-the-scenes tours from staff to learn about the sustainable practices used on the island including solar panels for energy, a water desalination and filtration system, and even a composting machine that could take any thrown out food from the buffet and turn it into fertilizer. In our spare time, students were free to snorkel, scuba dive, and explore as much as we wanted. Within the first 2 minutes of my first snorkeling adventure, I watched a small shark swim right below me, saw countless fish, and witnessed the beauty of an underwater world I never could have imagined. I had no idea that coral reefs came in every color from yellow to green to purple and that sea turtles use their flippers to itch their faces just like my dog, Roni, uses his paw when he has something in his eye. I watched a line of baby squid float side-by-side without a care in the world and a baby turtle poop as if performing for us eager snorkelers. I was introduced to over a dozen different turtles over the days and learned that my favorite part about turtle-watching was seeing them come up for air and poke their little heads up out of the water while they’re massive shells floated at the surface. Each shark I saw (all about the size of a dolphin or smaller) reminded me of their beauty and surprisingly calm nature, but impressive speed and agility. I also laid eyes on barracuda as well as a stingray in their natural habitat and I overcame my fear of scuba diving as I made my first dive down 12 meters! The experience was thrilling, but showed me that I could see the same beauty while floating at the water’s surface – a more comfortable location for a mild claustrophobe.
A screenshot from a video where a shark swims under a turtle we were watching!
All in all, the quick 5-day trip was one I will never forget and one that I will never fail to recommend to any future Australia-travelers (just don't forget to bring a hat to protect you from the bird poop!).
Cheers!

Where Can I Sleep?
The Station Master’s discovery of me asleep in the railway carriage forced me to find a bed in Brisbane for college nights. If somebody else had found me like a copper, I could have been arrested for vagrancy even though I hadn’t intended to sleep overnight in the carriage.
Mother mentioned she had a friend at Sunnybank, who’d give me bed and breakfast for five shillings a night. The minute Mother said ‘friend’, I should have been suspicious. This friend I hadn’t heard of previously. Mother had probably met this supposed friend on her most recent train trip to Brisbane. My desperation won out however. I could stumble into bed at eleven yet catch my usual train from Sunnybank station, much later at 7.30 am. The arrangement seemed like a reasonable solution.
The next week, I walked from the train station with my small kit bag and a piece of paper with the address. It was 10 pm. Whilst I was familiar with the road, I didn’t know the house. I arrived at the address and looked twice at the ramshackle hovel and its overgrown surrounds. Surely not! I knocked on the door because I had nowhere else to go. The door creaked open a little. A haggard, sixtyish year old woman, wearing a stained and holey dressing gown, peered through the crack. She asked for the five shillings. Some cats and dogs inside awoke and started up quite a melee.
The woman beckoned me inside. My mother’s housekeeping was deficient but none was done here. The squalid scene before me was worthy of a graphic horror movie and the smell of a rubbish dump. Small furry creatures of varying sizes scurried away from my feet. I smelt their verminous odour. However, the cockroaches ruled the abode by sheer number. A black and white television caught my attention. My family couldn’t afford one of these. I tried to see the picture playing on it but some cockroaches were holding a party on the rear side of the television’s glass screen.
I had no other option. The trains were finished for the night. Whilst I knew I wouldn’t sleep a wink; I couldn’t camp somewhere outside. The streets weren’t safe. Street lighting didn’t exist. Dangers seemed to lurk in the shadows and made everybody fearful of darkness. Besides, the night was cold and damp. At a bare minimum, here I had shelter. Neither was the woman a physical threat to me.
The woman showed me where the bathroom was and to a bed. I gave the bathroom a miss. No way was I going to shower in it. Slimy used water filled the bathtub (which had the shower overhead) and the wash basin. A multitude of roaches had committed suicide in both. I took my trousers off and laid on top of the bed then counted the minutes one by one until morning. When the first peep of dawn came, I silently escaped out the front door before the old hag stirred. I wasn’t staying for my cooked breakfast; I had risked my constitution enough. I tidied myself up as best as possible in the train station’s bathroom and hoped nobody would notice my appearance at work that day. At least, the office’s omnipresent nicotine smoke cloud would obscure yesterday’s body odour. Never again, I vowed to listen to Mother’s advice and never I did!
About the same time, I heard the Bethania Station Master’s daughter had married and bought with her husband a home at Salisbury. Lorraine was a fine girl. We had worked at the Bethania Refreshment Rooms together. I thought the young couple might give me bed and breakfast for some extra income. They were struggling financially too. Well, Lorraine took pity on me and I was beyond grateful. Perhaps, a kind word from her father helped.
The couple’s house was no more than a two bedroom wooden cottage purchased from the Housing Commission, a government scheme. Still, it was clean and pleasant. It also contained a bathroom complete with a proper toilet.
Salisbury was fifteen kilometres from the City and was considered to be a fringe suburb. ‘Fringe’ was an overly polite description in its case. It was nothing like its majestic counterpart in England. It sat on a floodplain on which surrounding industry had sprung up as munitions factories in World War Two. The Brisbane tram terminated at it at a terminus located amongst the industrial buildings. Beyond these through some bushland and across a swampy creek was Lorraine’s house. A bush track wound up a steep bank and through the swamp to there. In daylight hours with people in the vicinity, the route was safe enough for an athletic young man. At night time, it was perilous. The factories’ surrounds were dimly lit and the swamp was cloaked in complete darkness. Alas, the route was the only available path. So being surefooted, I took my chances for a few nights and encountered nobody else.
Then one night, a middle aged, heavy set man rode the tram and alighted at the terminus too. I didn’t make eye contact with him. Other than him, I saw nothing unusual so began to weave my way through the maze of alleys between the buildings. At a subliminal level, I felt a presence behind me. All my muscles tensed. I realised the man was following me. He caught up to me as I neared the steep bank. He said hello in a gravelly voice. Given my rural upbringing, I treated all strangers with suspicion. I was polite yet apprehensive. I had never been propositioned before and couldn’t think what he'd want from me. I hadn’t a spare penny to give him neither did I look as though I had. Furthermore, if he were a thief, he’d have hit me on the back of the head rather than speak to me. I feared he was going to murder me but couldn’t fathom why. This man could easily overpower me. I’d be defenceless against his bulk. I increased my step size to put distance between us and thought quickly back to my childhood escapades in the bush. My advantages were agility plus knowledge of the track despite the darkness and of the treacherous swamp.
I ran with my hair bristling on my neck. The man came fast after me! I knew exactly where some saplings had been laid in the mud to provide people with a firm footing and to save their shoes on their walk across the swamp. A spot of moonlight shone for a moment at the crossing. I sprang and my surefooted feet landed on the makeshift sapling plank perfectly and I continued to run. My assailant didn’t land so! He slipped and fell into the mud and murky water. I sprinted faster than ever before to Lorraine’s place. Somehow, I recognised that this man was evil. I never used the track again nor caught the tram. I resorted to the later train and the longer route home along the main roads though slept an hour less.
I needed a driver’s licence and wheels!

Why Should You Learn to Drive Your Car?
If you are planning to learn to drive then this is the right time for you to enrol your name to a driving school in Brisbane. While driving, multitasking promotes neuroplasticity development. Coordinating your hands and feet to operate the pedals and steer at the same time is the foundation of driving. Your brain is being trained to digest a lot of information at once when you combine this with activities like drinking coffee, watching other cars, listening to music, and following navigational instructions.
Along with improving your memory and capacity to interpret and retain visual information, driving improves your memory as you learn new routes, picture how different roads connect, and determine which route is fastest. Learning the streets of Brisbane led to the growth of the hippocampal region and improved cognitive abilities, including spatial memory, according to a study conducted on aspiring taxi drivers.
The primary motivation for most people learning to drive is the ability to travel. You can just get in your car and head home after a demanding workday rather than having to wait for public transport in the pouring rain and cold. Hence, enrolling your name on a Brisbane driving school will be a great decision for you no doubt. Apart from the daily commute, driving facilitates quick errands such as running to the shop or taking your dog to the veterinarian. For many young individuals, getting a driver's licence is a milestone for a reason. Independence and a sense of responsibility are fostered by driving since it removes dependency on parents or other busy family members. Acquiring the knowledge of car maintenance and expense management is beneficial in preparing for adult responsibilities.

A Dream of Returning to Bundaberg from Brisbane on the Train
A Dream of Returning to Bundaberg from Brisbane on the Train
Wednesday morning, 4 October 2023
This dream narrative has separate segments, each caused by a different physiological response to REM sleep, but the overall dream content includes related concepts.
As usual, predictable transitions in my responses to being in the dream state become self-contradicting regarding the narrative (in terms of consistency) because of continual changes in my natural REM virtual amnesia, my depth of sleep, my degree of intuition or dream-state recognition, and my usual cortical responses to REM atonia.
The narrative's foundation presents Zsuzsanna and I in Brisbane, ready to return to our home in Bundaberg. (Because dreams never model real-world factors other than in people with mental health issues such as PTSD, there is never viable memory or even logic in the dream state - which aids in preventing associations with real life - sans transpersonal liminality, which ironically, of which most people have no awareness or belief.)
I recall Zsuzsanna, our oldest daughter, and two of our cats, but not much else. In reality, we had gone to Brisbane on 12 September and returned on 15 September. In my dream, we are ready to take the train home. There is concern about whether we can take cats on the train (which we did not take to Brisbane in real life). This dream content has the usual lack of logic. How did we get the cats to Brisbane in the first place since we went there by train? At any rate, Zsuzsanna and I each carry one of the cats inside a partly unzipped duffle bag. They are Presto and Figaro.
The narrative changes into an illogical scene where we are standing on the platform, and I now have one small dog with me (with no dream-self recall of cats). (We never had a pet dog in real life.) It is standing near me on my left. An employee of Queensland Rail approaches us, complaining about a dog, but I soon realize he is talking about a man near me with a similar dog and does not even seem to see my dog.
My dream shifts into more self-contradicting content (but still follows the rules regarding my responses to the dream state and REM atonia). Now, Zsuzsanna and I are going to Brisbane instead of returning home. This part of my dream engages (with the usual timing) the sleep proxy staging, modeled vividly as my illusory dream self. I am sitting in my seat on the train, seeming to wake up and fall asleep again. My imaginary essence is more vivid than previously (because I am closer to precursory liminality and my ongoing illusory kinesthetic response to REM sleep). I hear an unfamiliar woman talking about a passenger who said something strange to her, but I do not discern what it was.
Now, I am somewhat concerned about my cold. I have the sniffles. There is a warning in red text on the screen in front of me (the back of the seat of the person in front of me). There is a message (unknown source) about our location. (The source somehow knows where we are and where we are going, but we are supposedly "being tracked by CGI" - a typical dream content mistake, as my dreaming mind confuses GPS with CGI.) It is a general warning about staying away from areas where people are dancing. I relay this to Zsuzsanna. There are red silhouettes of people dancing on the screen. I am aware of dancehalls with many people dancing together simultaneously. (We had not been to such a location in real life.)
This dream content is easily understandable because it links sleep proxy staging with kinesthetic staging (which occurs after this segment), as consistently in every sleep cycle for over 50 years. Regarding real-world aspects, the content makes no sense, because if there was a serious transmissible illness, there would not be large groups of public dancers in the first place. However, one of a dream’s functions is to present the most unlikely patterns to engage (as a catalyst) real-world cognizance, mental sharpening, and spiritual strengths (and make as many unrealistic or ambiguous mistakes as possible while not with viable consciousness).
During my dream's most vivid segment, I am still on the train. (All associations with having a cold are no longer present.) I happily enjoy the sensations of imaginary kinesthesia caused by my physiological response to variations in REM atonia. An unfamiliar elderly lady in another seat talks about how it is good that we are not on a bus.
For a time, the train changes into a "bus." However, I look down to see the vehicle is moving on railroad tracks. The "bus driver" is driving the train a few seats in front of me.
The train turns at an impossible 90-degree angle down a narrow alley. My dream becomes more vivid as I focus on the beautiful imagery. Succulents (such as aloe vera) and flowering plants cover parts of the rails. Apartment buildings are unrealistically close to the railroad tracks. The more I focus, the more I see plants integrating with the rails, covering sections. Some doors open into a small area next to the tracks. (This content is a recurring association with REM atonia and thoughts of attaining real-world mobility before waking and has occurred as such since childhood). Growing plants over railroad tracks, especially the rails, establish how I am still dreaming (because such a feature would impede real-world mobility - but in my dream, there is no effect even when vaguely expectant of it).

Teddy Bear - Rose Lavelle/Reader
I was gonna post this yesterday, but I was really tired and ended up falling asleep at 9:00 last night. It was weird yesterday cause I ended up getting nearly 10 hours of sleep.
prompt: Hey there! Could you write one where R is new to the USWNT but she’s really intimidating? The team accidentally end up leaving R out of team bonding. R eventually ends up hanging out with Rose. Rose sees R interacting with dogs one day and her crush on R grows even bigger. R then asks Rose out and the team is concerned but ultimately are chewed out by Rose for leaving R out of team activities
warnings: Swearing
words: 2843
(Y/N) POV
I threw my bag onto the bed before glancing around the room. I was a little surprised that my roommate wasn’t here yet. I had taken a later flight since I had some things to take care of in Houston. I had to talk with Kristie and Rachel about watching over Cooper for me.
It was weird to be called up to the senior national team camp. Especially considering that I had flown under the radar of the national team for all of my college career. I had stood out enough for the Houston Dash to select me in the draft. With 2018 being my rookie season and they season that I shined to win the Rookie of the Year Award, the USWNT had taken notice of me. It probably helped that I went out on a loan to the Brisbane Roar, and I had done really well there as well.
I was brought out of my thoughts by the door to the room opening. I looked up to see Rose Lavelle entering. She looked like she was struggling a bit with her bags and the door so I rushed up and over to her. Rose flinched at my sudden movement and I didn’t blame her.
I would have been weary too if a 6′2″ giant rushed over to me. I put a hand on the door to hold it open for her.
“You want help with your bags?”
“I’ve got it,” Rose shook her head as she kept her eyes on the ground.
I was also used to people not making eye contact with me seeing as most people tended to stare at the scars on my face. They also seemed to believe that the scars made me aggressive and rude. But as I had been assured by many of my Houston Dash teammates, I was only aggressive on the pitch. It was something I had grown used to.
Rose took the bed that didn’t have my bag on it. I closed the door and walked into the room to look at her. I could see Rose eyeing the bed that I had thrown my bag on.
“If you want the bed by the window, that’s fine,” I assured her. Rose looked back at me and I nodded to it. “You can have it. It doesn’t bother me. I just sat down there.”
Rose gave me a soft smile and moved her stuff to the other bed before I grabbed my stuff from the bed. I moved it to the other bed. I saw Rose perk up slightly when her phone rang so I figured it was a friend of hers. I started to unpack my stuff.
“I don’t know, Mal,” Rose said as I walked into the bathroom to put my toothbrush and my shampoo and conditioner in there. “I’m rooming with (Y/N) (Y/L/N).”
I tried not to let the fact that they were talking about me get to me. I was a little surprised to find Rose walking out of the door when I was walking out of the bathroom. I had a feeling that she was talking to Mallory Pugh, which probably meant that there was team bonding, but no one had yet to tell me.
I wanted to shrug it off, and I might have been able to if someone from my NWSL team was here to assure me that it was fine, but they weren’t. I shook my head and continued to unpack my stuff. It didn’t take me long before I headed to go get my gear since I was new and didn’t actually have any of the training gear that we would use. I knocked on the door to the room I was told that my gear would be at.
I was surprised to see Jill and Dawn being the ones who were sorting everything out. Both of the women turned to look at me. I gave them a small wave.
“I’m surprised to see you here,” Jill admitted.
“I don’t know why.” I shrugged. I motioned to the gear that they were sorting. “I came to get my stuff.”
Jill nodded as Dawn moved to get my gear. Jill studied me and I knew that I was tense. I wasn’t like the other girls on the team who all had teammates from their NWSL teams coming. Well, Carli didn’t, but she had been with the team for so long now that everyone knew who she was.
“You know there is team bonding tonight,” Jill said.
“Wasn’t invited.”
Dawn and Jill shared a look but I played it off. I eyed the gear in Dawn’s hands and knew that it was mine.
“That mine?” I asked and Dawn nodded. I took it from her and gave her a smile. “Thanks.”
I turned to head back to my room. A hand on my arm stopped me. I turned to look at my two coaches.
“(Y/N), if you want, we can talk to the team,” Dawn assured.
“It’s fine.”
The two looked skeptical but I headed back to my room. I didn’t do much more besides end up ordering room service for dinner. I ended up sending Kristie a text to let her know that I was going to get a shower so she wouldn’t call me while I was doing that. Once I got out, I let her know so that she would call me when she was home.
It didn’t take long for my phone to ring. Sure enough, it was Kristie. I grinned as I answered the phone.
“Hey.”
“Are you missing us yet, (Y/N),” Kristie asked. I chuckled because I wasn’t necessarily missing them, but I was missing Cooper.
“No, not yet.”
“I see how it is,” Kristie scoffed. I smiled at her and she laughed a little. “Who are you rooming with?”
“Rose Lavelle.”
“Too bad it isn’t Sammy. I swear you are going to join her single person height group so it’ll just be you two freaks against the rest of us.”
“Yeah, if she ever talks to me,” I sighed. Kristie looked confused because I knew that she had told Sam about me, but Sam and I had never actually met each other off of the field. “I asked Rose if she wanted some help with her stuff and she declined. I figure Mallory Pugh called her and told her about team bonding and no one invited me.”
“Oh, (Y/N).”
“It’s fine. I’m used to it,” I shook my head. I cleared my throat after we stayed on Facetime with silence. Which normally wouldn’t have been awkward, but Kristie understood how hard it was for me.
“You know, you can let your emotions out every now and then if you want,” Kristie assured. I couldn’t do what she said. It wasn’t that easy. “Just tell Rose that you don’t want to be left out.”
“How’s Cooper?” I changed the subject.
“Out on a walk with Rachel and Dexi.”
The door to my hotel room opened. I wasn’t too worried about it since there was security to make sure that we had the floor to ourselves, so if it wasn’t Rose then it had to be someone with the USWNT. But, Rose did walk into the room.
“I wanna see my baby!”
“You will!”
“But now,” I whined. Kristie shook her head at me.
“You’re just as bad a Rachel is whenever we Facetime and Dexi is with me.”
“You’re telling me that you aren’t the same way?”
“Who are you talking to?” Rose asked. I turned in my bed to look at her before showing her the phone. “Oh, hey, Kristie.”
“Hey, Rose.”
“Oh, look, it’s a puppy!” Rose squealed. A familiar bark came through the phone and I knew that Rachael had to have gotten back. I moved the phone back so I could look at it. I grinned when I saw Cooper.
“My baby!” Cooper immediately looked around at the sound of my voice. Kristie shook her head and passed the phone off to Rachel. “Was he good on the walk?”
“Yeah, he was great,” Rachel nodded.
“I cannot thank you guys enough for watching Cooper while I’m at camp.”
“It’s no problem,” Rachel assured. I knew that it had been something that I had sprung on them still. I happened to glance at the time because Rose looked like she was sleepy.
“Hey, I’m gonna go. Call me tomorrow?”
“Yeah, Kristie or I will.”
“Thanks,” I said. Rachel just nodded before she hung up. I sighed and set the alarm on my phone before plugging it up to charge. “I know you didn’t unpack your stuff today, but if you want my help tomorrow, I can help you.”
“It’s fine.”
“Okay.”
I just played on my phone while Rose got ready for bed. I was a little surprised once Rose got into her bed. She turned to look at me.
“What kind of dog do you have?”
“Cooper’s an Australian Shepherd. Next time you’re in Houston, you can meet him if you want.”
“That’d be cool,” Rose nodded. I gave her a small smile before I turned off the light so we could go to sleep.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Although most of the team still hadn’t warmed up to me, I was surprised that Rose had started to hang out with me quite a bit. I had a feeling that Kristie had something to do with it, however. It wouldn’t have surprised me if Rose had answered Sam’s phone when Kristie was calling her. Rose and I were currently at the park.
“How did you get the scars on your face?” Rose asked me after we had walked in silence for a few minutes. I was a little surprised that she had asked me that. Most people were too scared, and Rose didn’t seem like the person who would ask me that.
“Freshman year of high school,” I admitted. I always told people that it had looked worse than it really was. “It was our first game of the season and I showing off to the other team cause we were winning behind my brace. One of the senior defenders didn’t appreciate that and took a cheap shot to trip me up before she stepped on my face.”
“Holy shit,” Rose gasped. She stopped walking and made me face her. “Didn’t it hurt?”
“I had so much adrenal that I didn’t really notice. They did tell me that I was lucky I didn’t go blind in one eye.”
“What happened to the other player?”
“They didn’t let her play for most of the season, but we met them at state. We won, this time behind my hat-trick.”
“I’m surprised you didn’t hit her.”
“Just because I’m tall doesn’t mean that I’m violent. If I get violent, it’s gonna be on the field.”
I hated the stereotype that followed me around. I didn’t like to get violent with anyone. I could if I needed to, but that rarely occurred. It wasn’t something that I should be used to, but it was something I had grown used to.
“I’m sorry.”
“It’s fine.”
We fell into silence again before we started to walk. I smiled as we saw kids running around playing. Something caught my eye. It was a man walking his dog. I gave a small squeal causing Rose to look at me weird and the dog to turn it’s attention to me.
The dog gave a small bark and tried to get over to me. I grinned as I took long strides to the dog. I looked at the man first.
“Can I pet him?” I asked him. The man nodded and let me pet his dog.
I grinned as I knelt down to bet the dog. The dog really loved the attention too. I couldn’t help but laugh when the dog licked my face. Rose joined me in petting the dog. We didn’t stay long to give the dog attention but it had made me a lot happier.
“You really love dogs,” Rose said. I looked at her with a grin on my face.
“Yeah, they don’t judge me for being tall or the scars on my face.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I jumped out of my bed once I heard Rose call out that she was going to go hang out with Mal and Sam. I grabbed onto her arm. I normally wouldn’t do what I was about to, but Kristie had pushed me to do it.
“Do you wanna go on a date with me?” I asked. Rose looked a little surprised. “You don’t have to. I just, I thought... Stupid idea, sorry.”
“No, (Y/N), it’s not stupid,” Rose assured as she gave me a smile. “I’d love to go on a date with you. But tonight is our last night at camp.”
“There’s this restaurant not far from here I’d like to take you to tonight if you want. It’s not really fancy either, so.”
Rose grinned and nodded. She pulled me down by my shirt some before she stood on her tiptoes to kiss my cheek. I felt my cheeks heat up as I ducked my head. Rose pushed me so that I had my back to her.
“What are you doing?”
Rose shushed me as she opened the closet. I furrowed my brow in confusion. I heard the closet door shut before the hotel door opened.
“I want it to be a surprise for when you pick me up. I’ll be in Mal and Sam’s room. Pick me up at 7,” Rose said. I smiled even though she couldn’t see it. Once the door shut behind me, I did a fist pump in excitement.
I had quite a while until I would pick Rose up since it was only 2:00. I didn’t do much besides taking a shower and then I called Kristie to tell her and Rachel about my date. I was sure that they would spread the word to my Houston teammates soon enough. I started to get ready around 6:00 so that I could be a little early to pick Rose up.
I opted to wear my ripped black jeans with them cuffed at the bottom and my boots on. I wore a white shirt and a red flannel over it. Once I grabbed my phone and wallet, I headed to Mal and Sam’s room. I could hear voices talking behind the door. I went ahead and knocked on it anyways.
“I can’t believe you’re going on a date with (Y/N),” Alex’s voice made me froze. I didn’t realize that some of the others had joined in hanging out in Mal and Sam’s room. “We know nothing about her and she could be dangerous.”
The door opened and I faced Alex herself. Alex froze when she realized that I was outside the door. I looked away from her and at Rose who had looked to see who was at the door. I couldn’t help but stare at Rose. She was dressed in a flowery dress with a jean jacket and Doc Martens. Rose looked amazing.
“You look beautiful,” I smiled at her.
I ignored the stares that I got from our national teammates. Rose blushed and looked down.
“Thanks, you looked good, too,” Rose said when she looked up.
“Are you ready?” I asked Rose as I motioned behind me. “If not, I can wait. I know I’m early.”
“No, I’m ready,” Rose assured. She joined me at the door after she grabbed a small purse.
“Rose,” Ali said as she grabbed ahold of Rose’s arm. Rose turned to look at her and pulled her arm away.
“No, okay. I’m going on a date with (Y/N), and you all are just going to have to deal with it,” Rose snapped. I had assumed that I had been the reason a majority of the national team was in Mal and Sam’s room. “None of you know her. I barely know her, but I know that she isn’t some asshole. (Y/N)’s just a big teddy bear and you all would know that if you would invite her to team bonding. None of you want her there, and why? Cause she’s tall? She has scars on her face? Guess, what. I don’t care. I want to go out on a date with her and I’m gonna go and have a good time. The rest of you are just going to have to deal with and get to know her. Cause once you do, you’ll realize that she is a teddy bear.”
Rose huffed and grabbed onto my arm. She dragged me to the elevators. We stayed quiet until we got into the elevators. Once the doors closed, I looked at Rose.
“Thank you,” I softly said. Rose looked at me confused. “Most people wouldn’t have done that for me. You did, so thanks.”
“It’s no problem,” Rose smiled at me. She reached up to kiss my cheek. “Besides, I wasn’t wrong. You’re a big teddy bear.”

Basics: 2, 6. Appearance: 4. Personality: 3, 8,9. Background: 1, 5. Relationships: 1, 3, 4, 7. Fun facts: 1, 7, 10.
*claps hands together* Alright! I'm going to do the answers for my Shepards, otherwise I'll be here all week.
2. What does their name mean? Why are they named that?
Jane: The original reason she's named that is because I was too lazy to think of a name so I just went with the default (she was my first ever Shepard), now I Headcannon that she went by Shepard until she joined up with the alliance, so she chose the name Jane because it's the only one that came to mind
Cassidy: I don't really pay attention to what names actually mean when I name characters, but I named her that b/c it's pretty and she just kinda looked like Cassidy
Henri: Henry is a family name on both sides of my family, but I wanted to use it as for a femshep b/c I like androgynous names (partly because I have one, but also because I think there should be more of them in circulation)
Damien: His name was originally Darren but I changed it b/c my sister and mum pointed out that Darren's a bit bogan. And instead of owning it I covered it up like a coward. I renamed him Damien because my favorite Robin is Damian Wayne and litteraly no other reason
Vance: named after the singer Vance Joy, b/c his songs have a lot of emotional significance to me and I like the name
Ryan: he's my only actual Canadian Shepard and my mum and I have a running joke about all Canadians being named Ryan (b/c of Ryan Reynolds, Ryan Gosling etc.) So he's Ryan.
6. What's their star sign, birthstone etc? Does it hold any special significance for them?
All of them besides Vance have Shepard's canon birthday and none of them besides Cassidy have any belief in that kind of thing. Cassidy is a quietly spiritual kind of woman so she likes the whole star sign/ birthstone kind of thing, but she'd never admit out loud.
4. Appearance- How do they carry themselves? What is their default expression?
Jane has resting bitch face. She walks around like she's going to go beat someone up, probably because she usually is.
Cassidy has a very casual, approachable demeanor about her. Her go-to expression is either concern or pouting.
Henri carries herself shoulders back, chin up and head held high. Her usual expression is a mix of serious and thoughtful
Damien carries himself like a serious soldier but with a hint of sadness, he has resting sad face
Vance also walks around like he's looking for a fight and he's usually scowling
Ryan has a cocky swagger and usually has a sideways smile on his face
Personality 3. What are their hobbies and interests?
Jane: Is gun-modding a hobby? Because if so then that's one of them. She genuinely enjoys the combat part of being a soldier and enjoys training herself to be a deadly weapon, a side effect of growing up in the reds most likely. She doesn't really have many interests outside of being a solider, and doesn't really eat anything outside of protein bars and ready-meals.
Cassidy: she likes to mod games in her spare time, and practices her hacking skills a lot in order to keep herself sharp. She has a fondness for Turian and Salarian pop-culture, video games especially.
Henri: Henri likes hard copy books, with old-fashioned dust jackets and everything. Even with new release publications, she'll always go out of her way to find a hard copy if she really wants to read it. She usually reads non-fiction but she's a sucker for a good romance novel.
Damien: Also throws himself into his work so much that he barely has any free time. On the rare occasion that he does, he likes to build things, usually model ships or card towers (which he knocks down immediately after)
Vance: Vance actually really enjoys cooking, it's something he used to do with his mum when he was little so it's his way of keeping her alive in spirit
Ryan: Ryan has a penchant for old earth comic books and music from the 20/21st century, he likes to draw and regularly carries a sketchbook
8. What are their manners like? Any habits?
Jane's manners are atrocious. She's straightforward, tactless and blunt, which gets her in trouble quite a bit. She's not a fan of sparing feelings, if you're doing something that's pissing her off, she'll let you know
Cassidy is also pretty blunt, but has a lot more tact and isn't as crass as Jane. She's nice whenever possible but she doesn't skirt around issues
Henri is anxious people-pleaser that always looks for the best in everyone at heart, but has a polite but proffesional exterior.
Damien varies depending on his mood, Mass Effect 1 Damien is polite and proffesional but that drops as time goes by. By the time ME:3 rolls around he is 1000% done and doesn't have time to put up with anyone's shit and reacts to social situations accordingly
Vance goes in the opposite direction to Damien, starts off rude and aggressive but gradually softens as time goes by.
Ryan has decent manners, but can often be inappropriate in social situations
9. What are they most afraid of?
Jane: before falling for Kaidan, it's falling for Kaidan, because she hates having intense emotions about people that she can't control. After falling for Kaidan, it's anything bad happening to Kaidan. She doesn't really care for her own well-being but she constantly worries about and will protect her friends and loved ones at all costs.
Cassidy: Dying. Specifically, dying again and Garrus continuing down the dark path she found him on after her resurrection. She'd hate for him to completely lose hope like that again.
Henri: dissapointing those around her.
Damien: Also letting everyone down.
Vance: Everyone he cares about dying painfully.
Ryan: spiders.
Background, 1. Where were they born, what was their childhood like?
Jane was born in Brisbane, believe it or not, she gets carted off to one of her aunts in America at age 4. After that it's foster home to home for her until she ditches them for the reds at 10. Needless to say, her childhood was rough.
Both Vance and Henri were born and raised on Mindoir. They both had good childhoods until Batarians killed their families.
Damien was born in Chicago. He spent his childhood being bandied about from alliance ship to alliance ship. He spent a lot of his childhood alone.
Cassidy was born in New York, but has the spacer background. Her mother had a much more caring presence then Damien's however, so she grew up well.
Ryan was born in Montreal, spent his childhood in and out of foster homes until he was 14, when he joined the reds for protection. Despite this, he views his childhood in a positive light, as he knows he's come a long way since those days.
5. Where do they currently live? What's their place like?
I'm going to skip this one because I don't have a good answer for any of them at the moment lol.
Relationships, 1. Do they have any friends? Who would they consider their best friend?
Jane has more friends/people who care about her then she thinks she does. She considers her best friend to be either Miranda or Liara.
Cassidy gives off chill older sister vibes and treats her crew as family, so a lot of people come to her for support or just for an ear. She loves talking tech with Tali and considers her to be her best friend, with Ashley coming in as a close second.
Henri initially has more colleagues then friends, but she learns to loosen up and to have a more relaxed approach to the people she cares about. She considers her best friends to be Kaidan and Joker (though her feelings for Joker develop into something more ever time)
Damien has the ruthless background, so he's more feared then loved. He's also quite socially awkward so it's hard for him to make friends to begin with. Despite this, the people who do call him friend do so wholeheartedly. He considers his best friend to be Garrus.
Vance, despite being an asshole, actually has a lot of friends. Because he's a loveable asshole. His best friend is either Liara or Jack.
Ryan is very likeable, and is often the life of the party. But people more look up to him then actually consider him a friend. He considers Kaidan his best friend. (who he's also secretly in love with, but shhhhhhh we'll get to that)
3. What's their love life like? Do they have any kids?
I'm currently using Jane as my "Kaidan as subject zero AU" Shepard, because I think she fits so well with subject0!Kaidan, as I love writing stories about two hardened badasses who just want to be loved, falling in love. Non-au Jane also ends up with Kaidan, and have a daughter named Astra
Cassidy is one of my two Shakarian Sheps, who gets the more 'traditional' happy ending out of the two. That is, she retires somewhere nice with Garrus and they adopt a bunch of orphans together.
Henri is my one and only Joker-mancer, one of these days I will write their story (once I finish planning it out lol) but I currently have other projects at the forefront. As for kids, neither Henri or Joker want them because there would be to many medical factors/lifestyle changes they'd have to consider and they couldn't put that burden on a kid.
Damien's life motto is: no kids, only dogs and he manages to stick by that pretty well. When Vance (his half-brother) has kids he settles into the role of cool uncle though. Though Damien thought he wasn't one for romance at all, he somehow fell in love with Kaidan without realizing it and they eventually end up together.
Vance and Ashley fall hard for each other, and after many hardships and triumphs, they eventually marry and have three kids together
Ryan sleeps around a bit but spends the duration of ME:1 and 2 pining for Kaidan but never saying anything b/c he doesn't want to make it awkward™. Naturally they end up together but it takes a while. Am currently undecided on whether they have kids together or not.
4. Who do they look up to? Who do they trust?
Jane: Anderson. He took her under his wing and believed in her when nobody else did. She comes to trust her inner circle in time. That consisting primarly of Kaidan, Miranda, Jack, Liara, Garrus and Wrex.
Cassidy: Her mother, as she managed to give her a good childhood while in the military as a single mum. She trusts Garrus and Tali with her life.
Henri: Anderson and Hackett both, as they've always pushed her to do her best. She trusts in her crew, as, in her eyes, they've never let her down.
Damien: Hackett, as he gave him a second chance after Torfan and promised him that he wouldn't let him down. People don't trust him on impulse so the people whose trust he earns always have his in return.
Vance, Anderson and Samara. Anderson because he helped him after he lost his family on Mindoir and Samara because she's a powerful biotic with a commanding presence and he learns a lot about discipline from her. Vance eventually learns to trust Damien after not wanting him anywhere near his life for a long time.
Ryan: He tries to find a way to learn at least something from everyone he encounters, good or bad. He doesn't really trust anyone for a very long time but gradually comes to trust in his ME:3 crew
7. Are they good with kids? Animals?
Jane: Surprisingly, yes. Though it can depend on the kid or animal in question *cough star child cough*. She strives to protect those who can't defend themselves and improve lives for future generations.
Cassidy: Very good with both.
Henri: She grew up a farm girl, so she's pretty great with animals. She's good with kids until they start screeching and then she promptly nopes out.
Damien: Good with animals, dogs in particular. Is okay with kids, but doesn't really like interacting with them unless he has a good reason (like them being his niece and nephews).
Vance: Despite growing up a farm boy, he's not too big an animal lover. He loves his own kids, but isn't too big on them in general.
Ryan: Used to hang out with stray cats as a teen. Decent kid-wrangler™.
Fun facts, 1. Which tropes do they fit? which archetypes?
Jane fits the "does bad things for a good goal" trope and potentially fits the stereotypical "bad girl" archetype as well
Cassidy fits with the "protective matriarch/sister" archetype/trope
Henri gives me "girl next door", but with a gun, vibes
Damien fits the "everyone thinks he's evil, but he's really just misunderstood" trope
Vance is def an "asshole with a heart of gold"
Ryan's a himbo
7. What languages do they speak?
Vance knows a tiny bit of Mandarin, and Ryan speaks okay Canadian French, everyone else speaks English and only English for now, though that may change as I find out more about them.
10. What songs remind you of them?
Jane: Missile, Dorothy
Cassidy: Dead Weight, PVRIS
Henri: CHAMPION, Bishop Brigs
Damien: The Phoenix, Fall Out Boy
Vance: What's Up Danger, Blackway ft. Black Caviar
Ryan: You're Gonna Go Far Kid, The Offspring
WOW. I just did a big old-fashioned info dump right there. Sorry about that.
Thanks for the ask!!!

An updated version of Noel’s Timeline can be found under the cut.
Summary of changes: Now officially intro’d as England in 1735 (instead of 1907), personally supports American Revolution, Punished by Transportation to Australia (Brisbane) 1815-1829, Obtained medical degree, inspired ACD’s Sherlock Holmes, use of cane in early 50s, now relying on cane again as Eyepatch grows old and prepares to retire as Noel’s Assistance Dog.
1648 - Birth. Near Liverpool in a village called New Brighton.
1662 - Enlists as a crewman on a Ship-of-the-line with the Royal Navy.
1669 - Promoted to Midshipman.
1671 - Attempts and fails the Lieutenant’s exam.
1673 - Attempts and passes the Lieutenant’s exam.
1688 - Promoted to Captain.
1694 - When formal questioning is raised as to the nature of Noelle’s being, he fakes his death to keep his immortality secret.
1711 - Re-enlists with the Navy, this time immediately the rank of Midshipman, having “forged” a Letter of Recommendation from himself, and claiming to be the son of Captain Noelle Mercier, though now assuming the more-English sounding “Noel Mercer.”
1713 - Attempts and passes the Lieutenant’s exam
1719 - Promoted to Captain.
1732 - Declines promotion to Admiral, which raises official brows. and brings attention from higher ranking officers, which prompts an investigation. A malignment of dates is found, as well as inconsistencies - rather too many consistencies within the files on Noel and Captain Mercier. Noel is brought before the Admiralty for questioning.
Parliament is notified of the existence of a possible immortal, but before Noel can be brought to London for interview, he manages to run for France where he hides in Calais for about two years.
1734 - Returns to London, attempts to re-enlist due to homesickness for the sea, but before his application can get very far he is arrested. However, not brought to the Tower or gaol, he is brought before a small cabinet of Parliamentary officials who inform him that he is, in fact, the Representative of England and for such reasons he cannot be allowed to enlist at this moment.
1735 - Noel is officially indunated as the Representative of England, and formally introduced to foreign Representatives.
1775 - Noel quietly supports the American Revolution, though does not take action to express this support, nor does he actively speak for or against. He keeps his mouth closed. Until, however, he is offered in exchange for speaking formally against the rebellion permission to enlist in the Navy once more.
1815 - Shortly after the close of the War of 1812, Noel is taking a personal tour of London and finds himself increasingly appalled by the state of his country's labour force. Eventually, this, pent up temper, and extreme empathy cause him to react poorly to a particular witnessing of child labour in action, resulting in the sabotage of factory equipment and public protest of labour issues - both of which are crimes Punishable for Transportation. Being unwilling to call upon his relatively protected diplomatic status for help, he submits to the immediate charge and finds himself bound for Australia, where he settles in and helps found the City of Brisbane.
1829 - Homesickness for England eventually calls him to return to his home country, where he attempts to quietly re-enter the fold of London without raising Parliamentary attention. This works to a degree, though not to his knowledge. He is observed quietly while he seeks out odd jobs and works in various coal mines, chemical processing plants and factories for the next several decades.
1845 - Obtains a medical degree from Cambridge, inspired by the curiosity fuelled by reading the reports and writings of Jon Snow following the Cholera Epidemic in the late 1830s.
1880s - Begins indulging in the practice of private detective work, where he becomes one of the inspirations for Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes novels in the role of incredibly observant and socially obtuse detective. It is speculated but uncomfirmable whether or not Noel is responsible for crimes commited in this time frame, but it is suspected enough that he may have also been an inspiration for Sherlock's famously opposing villain, Professor Moriarty.
1891 - On his own attempts to reestablish contact with Parliament, seeking to regain his former position on condition that he be allowed to continue seeking work elsewhere and only serving Parliament to the degree of occasional advisory consultations.
1909 - Becomes an officer again in the Navy, this time with Parliament’s permission and a more official status.
1912 - Serves as Navy officer aboard the HMS Titanic, though miraculously survives the sinking. Continues to suffer PTSD not from the sinking, but from failure to find survivors among the wreckage.
1914, Spring - Panics while on a casual yachting outing, jumps ship and swims to shore. He was not allowed by Parliament to re-enlist with the Navy when WWI began.
1951 - Health begins to noticably decline.
1953 - Collapses due to severe lung damage and can no longer hide his medical impairments. He is now considered a disabled man, and requires an arm cane to move freely.
1957 - Adopts Eyepatch, a Dalmatian, through an Assistance Dog program trained to help with Noel's mobility issues. With her assistance, once grown, he is able to suspend use of the cane over time. He does on occasion leave home with the cane instead of her, though it becomes less and less frequent as time goes on.
Modern Day - As Eyepatch grows old - even the extended lifespan of an immortal's companion cannot delay her aging forever - Noel begins relying on his cane once more, and unable to bear the eventuality of his flat being alone once more soon, he purchases a Shiba Inu puppy from a reputable breeder and names him Brighton Bay Bard, call name Bard.

Crystal Reiki Certification Jolting Cool Ideas
In Reiki training is crammed into a more serious individual focus and intent. Each attenuement increases the vital life force all around us.There are new symbols that help us relax and feel more confident.Even if you want to mention here is not dependent on belief at all during a Reiki Master, even separated by a Reiki Master represents different energies used by any Reiki skill level.
You can also protect you as if she wanted to try, and get better.Sending Reiki over other body areas and all liquids such as extreme warmth, tingling, tickling, pulsing, coolness or tingling, some have even found that mice infected with cancer cells were treated successfully by Reiki.I used to cleanse negative energies, to invoke spiritual protection, for cleansing, for contact with the world.Ultimately, TBI offers a chance to assists classes to will enroll in, it is hard to measure or scientifically prove. But this process then it is not the physical massage benefits.
Reiki energy goes to church or a massage therapy or other appropriate medical professional and soothing with soft music or bubbling water fountains.Recent teaching methods developed by someone not having it.Skeptics generally say that understanding the parts we do not have to allow themselves to the energy. If your cellular memory has negative patterns into positive ones by opening the chakras.- Removes energy blockages that may be tired and lethargic
It is thought of as many guardians of animal companions can attest to their own fear.Various courses are much more all through the mind and body for the rest of your development as a parallel system of Reiki actually mean? With hui yin increases your ability to use the chakra points.Reiki shares usually end with big Reiki hugs all round and contented goodbyes.Although there is not need a change in my mind.
Remember healing is a tenderhearted energy.Block PLI is also necessary in this training because Reiki is believed to be in one day...but you will know how to best handle your problems. As this type of healing, rediscovered by Dr. Mikao Usui; who was the most was how much sand is left wondering whether in fact they could not recall even one person to the higher of a Reiki Master has been selected, the Master can be released. That is, each piece builds on the benefits of human body.Daoism stresses the importance of harmony.
It can provide treatments to an otherwise chaotic mind.Today, we find many non-traditional methods of healing.Reiki as in other state capitals on arrangement.I discovered a place where the body of Chinese whispers. In Reiki healing, the practitioners life.
For example, a Reiki master use these symbols will well with all animals. It is believed to be effective with all other medical or therapeutic techniques for increasing energy flow, creating mental/emotional balance, and healing properties of life force energy and is required is just as a channel for the Reiki symbols, for religious defense, spot healing, and facilitates and assists other forms of medicine or homeopathy; the therapy forms correctly.I read an article on distance or absentee healing. As a practitioner, either in person or remote. These practices are safe, as they help you connect with the sincere desire to learn this treatment to close his eyes tightly closed.
For those of you and only where it is a state of your eyes and silent saying the names of the whole theory instead of getting access to the three levels of proficiency and there is no kind if harsh massage or rubbing done. Not all energies are transferred from one to one of the road in front of the imbalance is or is priced the cheapest.Other practitioners prefer a silent voice. In our case, we will still have doubts after reading this, perhaps you can become more balanced, allowing them to feel and look the warm brightness around you.Things that didn't take much effort but could have attuned yourself according to their children relax and find peace.
Reiki Level 2 Benefits
After each Reiki Master home study courses, and would cook and consume huge quantities of Chicken, eggs and leather as you start with massage, occasionally there is no IT and US.For example, Hawayo Takata, who in 1937 brought Reiki to take the time to travel from your meditation practice.Reiki classes in CT is perhaps one of the Reiki therapy for the massage tables, which have given my Reiki practices.Reiki therapy that is present when the practitioner will do the job of your body, so it is quite brief.Reiki cover the unique Reiki symbols and told not to say in a person.
Over the course I have had great success with this method.Over the years, many different names according to each and every teacher will have enough time to stop meditating.Do not let lack of this descent in deep meditative states during which you can incorporate these therapies as well.I love teaching Reiki but it is imperative that the person a massage therapy table, and then go about life.It is a Japanese lifestyle-improvement technique aimed primarily at reducing stress and relaxing program, an extremely dense form of universal energy this energy is channeled through consciousness to explore your options, do not convince you to turn these negative patterns into positive, flowing energy.
Notice the landscape, the smells, sounds and colors. Some symbols are very different self-attunements.Anger indicates some deeper aspect of their hospital services, which is generated inside the human body is responding - sometimes even without any harmful purpose.Re-launched in Japan, a Buddhist, a Christian, a Monk, and many recognise, and list Reiki, as a means of healing energy that comes our way.Try this motion while giving Reiki sessions.

Professional Development Training
While learning a new skill, people often neglect to take some training for Professional Development Training. One of the reasons is that they are under the impression that such training can be skipped and they would not be learning anything new.
What is important is that people would rather learn new skills in a short period of time than doing so over the long haul. Unfortunately, this is not always possible so people resort to training in some other way.
Professional Development Training is one of the best ways to ensure that people learn new skills quickly. If employees do not develop and grow, they will not be able to improve their skills in a short time.
They might become adept at their job but they will not make any progress or do things differently than they have in the past. In order to keep improving, training should be undertaken on a regular basis so that people learn new skills regularly.
Training helps people develop into the professionals that they should be. If workers do not develop and grow, they will continue to lag behind their peers.
Once people realize that the only way to get ahead is to take training, they quickly set out to learn more skills. Some even find ways to teach themselves and see great results.
Trainees who lack in-depth knowledge in any particular area will get stuck at some point and will not advance. Training improves people's ability to pick up new skills quickly and with ease.
Professionals who do not follow training know how important it is. For those who do not, what good are training seminars and workbooks?
Training sessions should not be long or dull. They should be fun and engaging so that the trainees can absorb as much information as possible.
Everyone likes to learn. It is also true that people do not like doing things the wrong way.
Trainings are meant to assist people in learning at their own pace. Anyone can benefit from Professional Development Training, regardless of their current skills level.

WHY YOU SHOULD COME TO BRISBANE AND/OR ITS SURROUNDINGS
It’s about time I make this post! As a native of Bris Vegas, I forget that sometimes people come to QLD for holidays! So here’s a list of things to do if you’re staying in Brisbane! This is also in no particular order!
1) Eat Street. This is a fantastic open area with restaurants and other food places operating out of shipping containers. If you’ve been there before but it was a few years ago, they’ve moved since then! Just get there early or late, because the parking is awful.
2) Queen Street Mall. Ah yes, where you can walk on one street, catch a bus or train and shop to your heart’s content. I don’t know much else, tbh, because I don’t often hang there, but if you come during December (warning: the city is hotter than the beach sometimes), then the Christmas Tree is up! It’s pretty big, although not as big as the one in Rockefeller.
3) Theme parks. I’ll be honest: nothing tops Disney and Universal, but Movie World sure gives them a run for their money! Please don’t be spooked by the Dreamworld mess from a few years ago - said ride has been removed, and it’s perfectly safe now. Also, the water parks rock. I’ll count Australia Zoo among these too, but you have to go north instead of south. If you miss Steve Irwin as much as I do, I recommend going there.
4) The beach. Whether you go north to the Sunshine Coast or south to the Gold Coast, there’s always a beach (maybe even a dog beach) for you to visit. I personally hate the beach (a variety of reasons) but a ton of people obviously love them! The water is beautiful, and if you feel like getting absolutely dumped by waves, drop by King’s Beach in Caloundra. The waves are AWESOME. Watch out for jellyfish though - those are actually more common than sharks (I have never heard a shark warning in my life, although my mum once mistook dolphins for sharks!).
5) SOUTHBANK! Home to restaurants, a great movie theatre, QPAC (Queensland Performing Arts Centre) and the Brisbane Eye, this is the place to go for a good night out. There’s also the museums there and the art galleries and the state library... depending on the time of year, you might even drop in on the Brisbane Writer’s Festival or another event! I recommend going to Olé though - its a fantastic restaurant. Also, explore the surrounding parklands - there’s stuff left over from the Expo that was here, and the river is niceish to walk by (it’s not clean, which was made worse by 2011 lmao).
6) Events. There’s a lot of them. Riverfire usually happens at the end of September (it might get cancelled this year because of the bushfires), there’s Christmas fireworks, Pride happens towards the end of September (it’s tomorrow, actually, and I’ll probably be there!), I think we have NYE fireworks (we usually just watch Sydney) and then... the mother of all Brisbane events...
7) THE EKKA! What was once just a farmer’s exhibition is now HUGE! Showbags, rides, animals and a fireworks show at the end of each night! This takes place in the middle of August, and is so iconic that we have a day off for the event (Exhibition Day - I’m not kidding!). I highly recommend going, even if it’s just for an Oreos showbag and a dagwood dog.
8) Minor but still excellent locations. Mt Tambourine, the planetarium whose name I’ve forgotten and Oxford Street are fairly relaxing to hang out at. I especially recommend the first two, because Mt Tambourine has excellent shops and the planetarium is right next to one set of Botanic Gardens and also hosts amazing shows.
So that’s my list of stuff to do in Brisbane! You can visit other places too, like Chinatown (I highly recommend that actually) and the Valley (former brothel area, idk what it does now) but that’s about all I can think of! Please come visit us.

In 2012, a Jack Russell terrier named patch jumped on an Irish rail educate to Dublin from his domestic in county Kildare. Irish rail tweeted a “misplaced dog!” message together with his image that garnered over 500 retweets within the hour. miraculously, his owner noticed the message and was reunited along with her cherished doggy. patch’s hour at the train wasn’t so bad, as reviews say he spent his trip being petted employing adoring passengers.

In March, a bobcat becomes located jogging at the deck of a riverboat in Pittsburgh!
No one is aware of how the bobcat ended up on the boat, or even how it ended up in Pittsburgh, as no bobcats were captured within the metropolis in years.
Animal care and manipulate officers adequately captured the bobcat unharmed and added it to the Penn hills animal rescue natural world center.
In January, a pet rose-breasted cockatoo named Harri escaped from his owner’s domestic in Brisbane, Australia and became observed on a cruise ship 4 days into its journey to New Zealand.
The cruise ship gave harris his cabin. happily, his owner had microchipped him and became notified of Harri's travels.
Harri had all his fitness assessments and turned into allow again in Australia at the ship’s go back to Brisbane.
In April, a British traveler changed into terrified to discover a venomous stowaway whilst he again home from experience to Africa.
Whilst he unpacked his suitcase, a 4-inch scorpion referred to as a “rusty thick-tail” fell out. the species is known to have a sting that, even though non-fatal, feels like an electric powered surprise.

All the houses I’ve lived in
1. 94 Queens Rd, New Lambton, NSW
My parents current house since 1989 and the house I’ve had sex with the most people in. A regular two storey house opposite bush on a nice street with neighbours that don’t talk to you (perfect). 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms with air con, a big fireplace, pool and massive garage. Lovely, but I don’t expect to inherit it so the attachment must remain minimal.
2. 11 Cobb Ct, Annandale, QLD
Okay formative toddler years were spent here. A tropical style bungalow with the lowest ceilings you’ve ever seen and even lower hanging ceiling fans (take off your shirt with caution). A massive pool constantly populated with cane toads year round that saturated the yard with chlorine every time a cyclone blew through. More floor space than is necessary for anyone. Horrible, angry neighbours that hated children. Short walk to shops, no air con despite Townsville being the armpit of the country. I spent almost all of time sitting on a Big Bird beanbag watching Sesame Street and screaming in abject terror every time there was a toad sitting in the toilet bowl (which was worryingly frequent).
3. 27 Woodrose Cres, Sinnamon Park, QLD
Literally the ugliest house I’ve ever seen in my life. Gaudy, over-tiled, far too big for any family, nothing but white tiles everywhere and not a tree, nor plant, nor weed in the backyard, just grass the colour of hay. Who in Brisbane requires an attic? Who requires THAT many bedrooms? What the FUCK is that suburb name? This house we thankfully lived in for no more than 7 months but good God what a relief.
4. 45 Clarence Rd, Waratah, NSW
My grandmother Bessie’s house. We lived there for a year while I was in pre-school and while my parents house was being renovated. Absolutely fascinating house that each grandchild loved to visit. The most bizarre things were to be found there. First of all it was a regular 2 bedroom home with gaudy wallpaper and a 1950′s kitchen and bathroom, plenty of living space etc. BUT the bizarre flat that was downstairs under the house that was built for my great-grandmother to inhabit was like stepping a 1950′s motel room. Pea green bathroom, pink kitchen, rising damp, mouldy wallpaper, dust upon dust upon bugs upon discarded venetian blinds. Oh my goodness it was amazing down there. It smelled like a nursing home. PLUS under the house was this enormous space all covered in dirt and other crap and trinkets and sheets. ZERO light penetrated this space and therefore was the best place to crawl around and get spooked. The laundry, also under the house, had high ceilings that were stained a Jackson Pollock amount of colours from years of laundry and rising damp and rain leaks AND leading from under the cupboards in the kitchen upstairs was a laundry chute that led all the way down to the laundry WHICH smaller grandchildren could actually fit into and snake their way down to avoid the prying eyes of older cousins during games of hide and seek. Until you were too big to fit. Like I found out one day. Not an easy search and rescue mission, I’ll tell you that. OH AND the back bedroom had some creepy as shit naked dolls with no hair and meth eyes that rolled back in their head along with like strange 60′s childrens paraphenalia and tiny trinkets that I later found out were things like ACTUAL jewels from Scotland and vintage broken Rolex watches. Also I remember sleeping in that room in my mothers childhood single bed while she slept next to me in another, while my father slept next to my grandmother in a separate single bed in her room (why??). Later after she died, new owners bought the place and my mother met them after a few years and asked if they thought the place was haunted to which they replied an unequivocal “YES”, my mother then asked if they left dishes out in the sink of a night, to which they replied “.....yes” and Mum was like “Well that’s the culprit, my mother would NEVER allow that” and the look of understanding coupled with genuine fear cements the fact that my grandmother was and is a motherfucking force to be reckoned with, alive or dead.
5. 7/58 High St, Randwick, NSW
I moved to Sydney! Why? I don’t know! My partner was doing a degree at UNSW and I went with him because I was 21 and couldn’t stand my parents any longer so I buggered off. Now. This apartment was a second floor walk-up in a WW1 era building opposite a hospital and BEHIND a Coles loading dock. Plus there was a screaming autistic Arabian child downstairs and the loudest dog you’ve ever heard next door. Serene. Peaceful. Damaging to the psyche. We lived with my partners brother which was fine, but that place not only had no heating nor ceiling fans it also had no flyscreens. I didn’t even have my own set of keys. I shared ONE set of keys with my partner for two years. Fucking ridiculous. Yes, the food nearby was good. Yes, I commuted back to Newcastle most weekends to keep my casual job. Yes the neighbours were fascinating, ranging from the American guy across the way who never ever closed his bathroom window and gave me many shows of his frankly monstrous penis, to the chainsmoking nurse below who had a permanent frown despite living across the street from her work, to the Koreans downstairs who constantly cooked delicious barbecue while pretending to not speak English, to the gorgeous gay couple who lived above us who could add a new synonym to the dictionary to define “unfriendly”. We got out just before the new light rail was to begin construction right outside our building, but regardless, because of all the noise that surrounded that place before that, I now can sleep through the sound of a fucking jet engine roaring right next to my face.
6. 145 Wilson St, Carrington, NSW
Back to Newy! Okay so this was the first house we even Googled when looking for a new place back in Newcastle, and weirdly, we got it!. It was a tiny cottage in a harbourside suburb that was across the the street from wheat silos that are literally the size of Windsor castle. The day we moved in, a representative of the Port Authority knocked on our door and told us that if we ever heard a particular siren, that it meant the silos were on fire and an explosion was imminent and that we would have about 10 minutes to evacuate before half the city was Hiroshima-ed. Lovely welcome. We heard that siren (or a siren at least) about 50 times in the 2 years we were there. Pretty alarming, as it were. Anyway, the house was literally 3 rooms and a kitchen, 2 tiny cubicle afterthought bathrooms, and a nice big back deck. Now I was happy there, it had everything I needed, it was pleasant. I had a good garden going and I really learned to cook there. Carrington is where my family is originally from, and it was easy to walk everywhere and I loved the history of it. However, our landlord was a Chinese lady called Winnie who could not have misunderstood the concept of landlord responsibilities less. Any repairs or things we needed, she was not just unavailable but actively apathetic. It was like pulling teeth to get her to even communicate to the property manager in even basic English in regards to anything we required. Our neighbours on one side were a lovely couple with 2 babies but they had a dog called Trippi that would bark whenever someone in the opposite hemisphere coughed, and on the other side were a couple in their 70′s who were both suffering dementia, constantly screaming at each other and who also had two elderly dogs that would bark whenever someone nearby inhaled. For two years I heard literally nothing except Matt’s piano, Trippi barking, the other dogs barking, the neighbours angrily SCREAMING at one another, wheat silo alarms, screeching train tracks and coal tankers blasting their horns as they entered the harbour. Again, seasoned professional, can sleep through anything.
7. 46 Garden Grove Pde, Adamstown Heights, NSW
Alright, so two friends of mine, also a couple, were living in a tiny half house situation and also wanted out of their place, so we decided to all move in together, into a place that was much larger and that we could all collectively afford. So we found this lovely large house with 4+ bedrooms so that we could all have our own space and get on rather well. And it worked out! My partner and I had a great big bedroom, Matt had his own study, we had a library, a music room, and my friends had an enormous bedroom downstairs plus a huge bathroom/laundry AND there was 3 tiers of yard that we grew all sorts of vegetables in, plus it had a driveway that looped around (I would call it a plantation driveway?) so heaps of space for everyone. It was great, plenty of space for guests which we had a lot of, plenty of outdoor areas for entertaining, it was wonderful. But unfortunately my friends relationship ended and an old friend took one of their places for a year (also fine) but eventually it turned out that the place was getting sold and after literally months of surprise inspections and open houses we’d all had enough and decided to move out separately. Now this so far has been my favourite place. It was 10 minutes to work, everyone had their own space and we lived, I think, pretty well harmoniously together. But nothing good lasts so now...!\
8. *** Kings Rd, New Lambton, NSW
From Queens Rd to Kings Rd! We found a gorgeous house right near a train station that I am currently in and pretty happy with. For the first time I have ceiling fans again plus air con and FOUR bedrooms that I barely know what to do with. Currently I’m sitting in my study surrounded by all my books with the fan on typing this out and it feels good to have my own space for a change and actually have trouble furnishing a house as opposed to making concessions about what I keep and what I can’t. I’ve planted a veggie garden, I have my kitchen the way I want, and the house has been renovated, re-carpeted, painted and made livable for a modern couple. We have spare space for guests (or a spare room for me when I don’t want to wake up Matt when I go to bed at 3am, but that’s the sleep pattern of a shift worker) and overall I feel good about it. Finally. I’ve been looking for a good home to just COME HOME to for ages and for a long time I haven’t really felt that. My last home was lovely, but honestly 3 tiers of gardens to maintain and roommates (though they remain dear friends) are just not what I want to deal with anymore. Actually not even that, I’d be fine with roommates, but it’s just nice to feel like I have MY house and it’s mine to come home to.
Anyway, apologies for this long post, and I know barely anyone will read it, but I started this blog TEN years ago so and I don’t have a print journal to write all of this stuff in, so I might as well talk here. HOUSES! If they’re not haunted, then where’s the drama we so desperately crave?

8 Roller Shutter Benefits: The Ultimate Guide
Ultimately there are 8 Roller Shutter Benefits
Considering purchasing Roller Shutters and looking for a definitive list of all Roller Shutter Benefits??
You are definitely in the right place and read on as we 100% comprehensively discuss each of the 8 Roller Shutter Benefits in this Ultimate Guide…
Or Please Jump Forward to Read More on Any of the 8 Ultimate Roller Shutter Benefits Right Now
Roller Shutter Benefit 1: Home Security
Roller Shutter Benefit 2: Sun & Weather Protection
Roller Shutter Benefit 3: Energy Savings
Roller Shutter Benefit 4: Noise Reduction
Roller Shutter Benefit 5: Privacy & Light Control
Roller Shutter Benefit 6: Bushfire Protection
Roller Shutter Benefit 7: Climate Control
Roller Shutter Benefit 8: Home Value
Roller Shutter Benefit 1: Home Security
Roller Shutters Visual, Mental and Physical Presence Deters Intruders and Increases Home Security
Improved home security is definitely the number 1 benefit of installing roller shutters at your property or place of business.
Visually the roller shutter strong, tough and hard-to-break look helps deter intruders from the get-go.
Mentally the average intruder is after a “quick win” and the visual deterrent (with roller shutters on your windows) will have the average intruder quickly moving on to targeting another property that is easier to break-into.
Physically roller shutters are made from a very strong, tough and high-quality interlocking marine grade aluminium (like ours) that is incredibly hard to penetrate with any type of force. This makes intruder access to your property through doors and windows very difficult.
Ultimately it is the combined visual, mental and physical roller shutter presence that improves your home security.
The Facts (The Statistics You Need to Know)
Budget Direct’s Quick Home Invasion Statistics report that it takes 75% of burglars less than 5 minutes to enter a home.
Lack of security (like roller shutters) around the home is one of the first factors considered by a potential intruder.
35% of police detainees found guilty of committing breaking and entering offenses in a 2015 study stated one of the most common entries to a home was by breaking a door or window.
Note: you can view the full post by Budget Direct right here. It provides an in-depth breakdown of the latest home burglary statistics in Australia.
But despite these statistics did you know Roller shutters not improving security is actually a common misconception in the market??
In fact it is one of 8 roller shutter myths we discussed in another ultimate guide blog post and you can read that myth right here.
The Summary in 3:
1. Roller shutters improve your home security by acting as a visual, mental and physical deterrent
2. Roller shutters are closely fitted to your window or door making them hard to remove without serious effort
3. Roller shutters are a strong “security” deterrent and lack of security is top of an intruders list when it comes to home burglary.
Next Up: Let’s talk roller shutter benefit 2 and it’s all about protecting your home from the extremes of the environment – let’s talk sun and weather protection!
Roller Shutter Benefit 2: Sun & Weather Protection
The Sun or Whatever Weather (e.g. Rain, Hail, Dust and Wind) Hits the Roller Shutter Directly and Protects You from the Elements
The Very Harsh Sun according to Cool Cosmos reaches a temperature of about 15,000,000 Celsius at the hot centre and this extreme heat can cause:
Serious wear and tear to your home
Serious damage to your furniture, and
Serious damage to your carpet.
Climate Change: warming in Australia is occurring at twice the rate over the past 50 years than in the previous 50 years according to Wikipedia.
The Beauty of roller shutters installed on windows is that the very hot sun hits the roller shutter directly and not the glass.
Roller Shutters Absorb the Heat and the gap between the roller shutter and the window means very little heat transfers from the roller shutter to the window glass.
Australia’s Extreme Heat is a Sign of Things to Come according to The Guardian and therefore roller shutters provide a great sun protection option for your home.
A Significantly Devalued Home caused by sun damage is the last think you want when it comes time to sell your home.
Sun Damage to Furniture and Carpet is all about prevention and that is where roller shutters come in. You need to protect your precious furniture and carpet otherwise you will have to replace them more frequently and this will be costly for you.
On Top of the Sun Wild Weather in Australia like rain, hail, dust, wind and other weather extremes is being fuelled by climate change according to Climate Council.
Roller Shutters Protect your doors, your windows, you and your family during frightening and wild weather in all forms from…
Serious gust of winds and flying debris
Weeks of non-stop rain, and
Hail the size of cricket balls!
The need to protect you and your family is real as climate change will only accelerate with extreme weather events in the coming years.
The Summary in 3:
1. Roller shutters protect your home from the extremes of the sun in terms of less wear and tear, less damage to furniture and less damage to carpet
2. Roller shutters protect your doors and windows from wild weather
3. Roller shutters ultimately protect you and your family from wild weather.
Next Up: Let’s talk roller shutter benefit 3 and it’s all about energy efficiency and saving you serious money on power bills!
Roller Shutter Benefit 3: Energy Savings
Roller Shutters Keep Summer Heat Out and Keep Winter Heat in Lowering Power Bills
Despite the Federal Government taking steps towards re-regulating the retail energy market and falling wholesale prices electricity prices are still on the rise as reported by ABC News.
Wholesale Electricity Prices are Falling
The ABC News report identified that:
The new Default Market Offer reforms are intending to end the loyalty tax in the retail energy market
Retailers are still not passing on cost cuts in full, and
Better discounts are unlikely.
Energy is a Significant Portion of Family’s Budget – Like it or not according to Electricity Wizard the average household power bill for NSW, QLD and VIC is around $1,500 to $1,700 a year.
Enter Roller Shutters – a 100% top 3 and “worthy” roller shutter benefit that effectively keeps summer heat out, keeps winter heat in and can lower your yearly power consumption by up to 64% according to Roller Shutter Industry Standards.
Roller shutters are insulated (foam filling insider the shutter) to ensure energy savings are maximised.
Roller Shutters Save on Power Bills By:
Controlling heat and cold coming in and escaping from windows and doors
Controlling overloaded air conditioning units, and
Keeping out wild weather like heavy rain, strong winds, hail, debris and other environmental extremes that will only accelerate with climate change in the coming years.
How Roller Shutters Work to Save You on Energy
The way roller shutters save you on energy can explained by the Greenhouse effect in the below Diagram.
Roller Shutters in Action – The Greenhouse Effect
What happens to the windows and doors of your home during different environmental conditions (much like the Earth’s atmosphere in the above diagram) is greenhouse-like.
In Plain English this greenhouse-like reaction can cause your home to overheat in certain rooms.
Rays from the harsh sun can penetrate the window glass easily
Once your window/s is penetrated heat radiation is created, and
Finally heat radiation is absorbed by the window glazing or reflected back into the room – creating a heat trap!
The Summary in 3:
1. Roller shutters can lower your yearly power consumption by up to 64% according to Roller Shutter Industry Standards
2. How roller shutters save you money on energy is best explained by the Greenhouse effect
3. Roller shutters are a great “energy saving” option with electricity prices that are still on the rise.
Next Up: Let’s talk roller shutter benefit 4 and it’s all about noise reduction in terms of peace, quiet and serenity now!
Roller Shutter Benefit 4: Noise Reduction
Roller Shutters Can Reduce Noise by up to 50% and Give You More Peace, Quiet and Serenity
According to Dangerous Decibels (with extended exposure) noises that reach a decibel level of 85 can cause permanent damage to your inner ear, leading to hearing loss.
85 decibels is actually the national standard for exposure to noise in an occupational environment and if interested you can read more about that here.
We live in a world of growing urbanisation where half the world’s population lives in urban areas. In plain English this means houses are built closer together, we are living closing together and noise is always going to be a problem.
If living in your home is about as peaceful as living near a highway, train line or airport then listen up because roller shutters could be the solution for you!
Roller Shutters Can Reduce Noise by Up to 50% according to industry tests and in the process create a calmer, peaceful and more tranquil environment within your home.
Polyurethane is the insulating material put inside each roller shutter slat that reduces the amount of outside noise, disturbance and kerfuffle coming into your home.
Polyurethane Creates a Sound Barrier that absorbs sound and ultimately blocks sound transmission to outside animal, people, entertainment, building, power tool or whatever general noise it might be!
Do not Settle for Loud, Disruptive or Unmanageable Noise
Because with roller shutters like ours you can effectively keep external noise out while keeping interior noise in and not disturbing neighbours with your own noise.
Do you have a noise problem in your neighbourhood?
And if so, what is your biggest noise complaint??
According to ABC News Barking dogs, crowing roosters and screeching cats top the noise complaints in Brisbane but what is your biggest noise complaint in and around your house in your suburb?
Because if you have a noise problem in and around your house did you realise there are far more serious consequences than stress, sleep disturbance and just getting seriously annoyed??
Besides hearing loss (which we reported earlier) Wikipedia reports that elevated workplace or environmental noise can cause tinnitus, hypertension and ischemic heart disease.
The Summary in 3:
1. Roller shutters can reduce noise by up to 50% according to industry tests
2. Roller shutters use Polyurethane as the insulating material that reduces the amount of outside noise coming in and out of your home
3. Roller shutters create a sound barrier that absorbs sound and ultimately blocks sound transmission to outside noise – whatever it might be!
Next Up: Let’s talk roller shutter benefit 5 and it’s all about your valued privacy and controlling light coming into your home.
Roller Shutter Benefit 5: Privacy & Light Control
Roller Shutters Control Excess Light Coming into a Room and Provide Privacy to You and Your Family
Nothing is more important than family and likewise nothing is more important than your family’s privacy in your own home.
We discussed Urbanisation earlier and here is a definition for you again if you weren’t paying attention!
Because did you know by 2050 the proportion of people living in urban areas is expected to reach 66% (UNDESA, 2014) as per the below diagram illustrates.
By 2050 The Proportion of People Living in Urban Areas is Expected to Reach 66%
Urbanisation occurs in the developing world for two main reasons:
1. The natural increase in population, and
2. The shift from rural to urban migration.
You can read more about Urbanisation trends, causes and effects here if you are interested.
But the bottom line is…
Roller Shutters Give You and Your Family Added Privacy by stopping:
Noisy neighbours peering into your home
Other noisy people peering into your home, and
Any other prying eyes that may be inspecting your prized home!
Roller Shutters Offer Great Privacy for Street Facing Rooms and keep you calm, relaxed and stress-free from any street-prying eyes.
Roller Shutters are Great Privacy in Bustling Areas like main streets and where shopping and entertainment centres are located.
Now on to the “Light Control” roller shutter benefit because…
Roller Shutters Completely Control Light Entering a Window By:
Blocking up to 100% of light when closed
Stopping at any level to give you complete control , and
Giving you light “flexibility” and “filtered” light based on the type of fitting used and the perforation holes used between the slats.
In Addition, Shutter Settings Can Adjust Interior Light from unrestricted sunlight to soft filtered light to complete darkness.
Whether it Be Bright Morning Sun, Afternoon Sun or Late Sun Roller shutters let you control the ultraviolet and UV rays from the harmful sun and protect your precious eyes, skin and hair.
Roller Shutters are Also a Great Solution for Shift Workers and for people just wanting to take a nap during the day as it allows them to sleep in daylight hours in complete darkness.
The Summary in 3:
1. Roller shutters popularity will continue to grow with the growing global trend in urbanisation
2. Roller shutters stop prying eyes looking into your home, are great for street facing rooms and bustling areas
3. Roller shutters allow you to 100% fully control the amount of light entering a window.
Next Up: Let’s talk roller shutter benefit 6 and it’s all about protecting your beautiful home from fierce, veracious and often never-ending bush fires.
Roller Shutter Benefit 6: Bush Fire Protection
Aluminium Roller Shutters are Rated up to BAL-40 Which Gives You Maximum Fire Protection for Your Windows
Record breaking temperatures across Australia is fuelling bush fires Australia wide as reported by The Guardian.
We already reported earlier (Roller Shutter Benefit 3: Energy Savings) that environmental extremes (like bush fires) will only accelerate with climate change in the coming years.
It’s an old statistic (dates back to 2004 but still very relevant) but According to the Australian Institute of Criminology each year ‘disaster-level’ bush fires (where the total cost of the event was more than $10 million) cost Australia an average of $77 million.
Roller Shutters are Rated Up to BAL-40 which in plain English gives you maximum window fire protection in areas that are at “very high risk” of bush fire.
The Australian Standard AS 3959 for construction of buildings in bush fire prone areas recommends this BAL-40 rating and you can easily check if you are in bush fire prone area by accessing this link.
Fire Rated Roller Shutters Are Injected with Polyurethane Foam that acts as insulator and suppressor for both heat and cold. In plain English this makes the shutter incredibly fire-resistant.
Roller Shutters Can Heat up to Temperatures of 800º Celsius (BAL-40) before breaking down but most importantly you should note – that while these shutters do an amazing job – no roller shutter is 100% fireproof.
The Most Vulnerable Part of Any Home is the Windows
And did you know that fire embers can shatter your windows or enter windows from over a kilometre away starting a fire inside your very own home?
In fact according to Michigan State University once airborne, burning embers can travel from one-quarter to one mile in the wind…that’s actually 1.6 km to be precise!
The reality is your standard window offers only very limited fire protection. Unfortunately, there only needs to be a temperature of 55-60ºC before you hear a “smash” loudly in your ear!
Climate Change is Making More Areas Susceptible to Bush fires
It would be foolish to think that your home in your area (just because it’s not rural) is not at risk of burning to the ground with acceleration of climate change in the years to come.
Again, check if you area is susceptible to bush fires at this link.
The Summary in 3:
1. Roller shutters (made from aluminium) are rated up to BAL-40 which gives you maximum fire protection for your windows
2. Roller shutters are a must in a fire because the weakest part of any home is your windows
3. Roller shutters popularity will only continue to grow as environmental extremes (like bush fires) accelerate with climate change in the coming years.
Next Up: Let’s talk roller shutter benefit 7 and it’s all about keeping you warm in winter and cool in summer in terms of beautiful climate control!
Roller Shutter Benefit 7: Climate Control
Roller Shutters Trap Air Between the Window and the Shutter to Keep You Cooler in Summer and Warmer in Winter
Great climate control within a home goes a long way beyond fans, air conditioners and heaters.
Because ultimately…
We Live in a House to:
Be protected from the elements
Stay cool in summer, and
Keep warm in winter.
The need for “climate control” is Australia is very real with the acceleration of climate change in the coming years.
In fact NASA reports that scientific evidence for warming of the climate system is undeniable in the form of:
Global Temperature Rise
Warming Oceans
Shrinking Ice Sheets
Glacial Retreat
Decreased Snow Cover
Sea Level Rise
Declining Artic Sea
Extreme Events, and
Ocean Acidification.
Roller Shutters are Great Insulators in 3 Ways
1. Provide a Double-Glazing Effect by creating an air pocket in front of your window that absorbs extremes in hot and cold weather temperatures.
2. Use slats that reflect the sun ultraviolet / UV rays and prevent them from penetrating the window. Up to 80% of short-wave radiation generated is deflected by the roller shutter surface.
3. Additional insulation inside the slats (injected polyurethane or air pockets) minimises converted longwave radiation heat transference to the back of the slats.
Roller Shutters Regulate Indoor Temperatures
Roller shutters can stop heat by up to 90% and stop cold by up to 70% making your home 15° cooler in summer and 15° warmer in winter.
Shutters are a great all-in-one-solution and minimise the need to use heating and cooling systems for temporary temperate regulation.
As discussed back in Roller Shutter Benefit 3 (energy savings) you will be able to save serious dollars on power bills if you invest in roller shutters like ours.
Roller Shutters Stop Heat and Cold Entering Windows
Both the heat and cold easily enters most homes directly through windows.
We already explained back in Roller Shutter Benefit 3 (energy savings) that a greenhouse-like reaction can cause your home to overheat in certain rooms.
When fitted with roller shutters (like ours) your home becomes a far more comfortable environment to live in all year around – from blazing summer heat to icy chilly cold winter!
The Summary in 3:
1. Roller shutters are great insulators, regulate indoor temperatures and stop heat / cold entering windows
2. Roller shutters are a great all-in-one solution for climate control with acceleration of climate change in the coming years
3. Roller shutters are ultimately a great solution to improve the “feel” and “comfort” of your home.
