Aussie Half Lap

After months of waiting we finally left on Wednesday the 2nd October for our half lap around Australia with good friends Julie and Lindsay. Heading north to get out of the state and then off to Darwin and then down the Stuart Highway turning left at Pt Augusta following the Murray river before heading home via Richmond NSW.

Queensland is huge and after 7 hours driving we pulled up for the night at Muckadilla. We have tried to stay here twice before but as the pub had burnt down not a lot of sense. This time in luck, staying at the free camp where the showers were hot and toilets clean. The service and meals at the “Muck” is exceptional and while a little expensive worth the stay. Suggest that we were a little excited so the very cold beers were a plenty. Beers very very cold.

Up early we hit the road again towards Blackall getting pulled over in Morven for a breathalyser. The police woman was very professional handing both Lindsay and I the “blow tube” as a momento. Staying focused we drove through to Augathella where we paid $234 for a tank of petrol. Welcome to the west.

Still early so we headed off to Blackall, which has only one petrol station (paying top dollar again) and sat down by creek having lunch. We had made really good time so called in to Barcaldine, home of the “Tree of Knowledge” but did not do a walk around as the heat is starting to set in. Finally settling down for the night at a roadside free camp 70 kilometres short of Longreach.

This was a truckies stop so we shared the space with lots of trucks and even a 3 carriage road train. Here we had a our first road side drink. Nice but the flies drove us silly. Ended up an early night.

Not to be slowed down as the trucks moved on so did we driving though Illfracombe to the Stockmans Hall of Fame in Longreach. We had not been here for ten years and it has changed so much. Well worth the entrance fee. Everyone should make the journey at least once.

We had driven through to Winton where we caught up with my little brother Wayne, his wife Debbie and granddaughter Page. Great evening sitting around with cold beers and a sausage or two. The flies and heat here, until 5pm, were horrific, when the slightest of breezes arose.

Bit of a late night but as the morning wind raised its icy breeze we prepared to head towards the “Age of Dinosaurs” where we were treated to a great tour. Again the heat and flies stifled the time but again worth the visit. In total nearly 4 hour walk and talk. This in five years, after the new extensions are finished, will be equal to any worldwide natural tourist attraction.

Sitting around as a I write waiting for the sun to go down so the flies disappear and the evening breeze commences. Looking forward to hitting the road tomorrow.

A Sense of place

This was a great chance to just experiment really quick. I grabbed a picture of of boyfriends dad that I took in illfracombe bay down in Cornwall and played around with placing text down in certain ways on the image. 

Integrating Photography and typography is one of the essential parts of graphic design and I just let my ideas flow a bit as I made multiple versions. I pushed the text all around the canvas to see where it looked the best and then tried to make vignettes and overlays different and interesting. I love the idea of repeating text and I really liked the bold blue and white as a cut out. I chose this image because I really liked the dynamic shape of the picture and I felt that it really lent to interesting compositions.

Trying to get them to work together was a challenge, I found it hard to get the text to show up on the rocks and the water seemed like the only place to put a title. But adding block colours really helped the the text to pop. 

If I were able to take new photos I would approach them in differently knowing that I would incorporate text into them. 

I would 

Leave more negative space in the image ( Perhaps Sky or grass or water) 

Place the figure to one side or make sure that I knew where the text would go before hand.
