Midnight Sky #4
Midnight Sky #4 Scout Comics 2019 Written by James Pruett Illustrated by Scott Van Domelen Coloured by Ilaria Fella After discovering the Changelings' plans for human children, Jennifer, Elita, and Alejandro find themselves on the run from their hunters who are attempting to eliminate Elita as a threat, as her reputation continues to inspire the desperate humans. While attempting to avoid detection by following the remnants of antiquated airmail beacons and fire watch towers, the crew find themselves in the middle of a hijacking of a Massive Mart supply train, the only remaining economic powerhouse in the region, full of rare supplies on its way to the wealthy class that are working in conjunction with the invading horde. Will these marauders become allies or another threat? I am really enjoying this and while in some instances it reminds me of V this really does take on a mind of it's own with how the story meanders about. I am also a huge fan of Joe's writing here as he does so much to tell the story and bring us avenues and directions that we'd never have thought it would go and or take. I mean this in the best ways that could possibly be taken. Last issue we saw Hector whom we learned was Jess' cousin who had helped her kill husband and as if that weren't enough of a shock well Joe has plenty in store for us. The way that this is being told is pretty darn brilliant in my humble opinion. How we see the story & plot development unfold through the sequence of events and how the reader learns information is really strongly presented to the reader. The character development that we see is astonishingly good and the fact that the way the characters interact, act and react to the situations and circumstances which makes us change how we see them blows me away. The pacing is great and I really like how it takes us through the pages revealing the twists and turns along they helps to create the books ebb & flow. The way this all structured and how we see people come to decisions is something that Joe is doing extremely well and while we don't always see what's coming we want to follow regardless. The interiors here are very nicely done. Sure there are times when I wish that the linework was a tad tighter and that the detail wasn't lost the smaller we see them. Yes I wish that backgrounds were in every panel, they do wonders when we see them in bringing us depth perception, scale and this overall sense of size and scope to the book. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a great eye for storytelling. The linework is strong and the attention to detail that we see is very well rendered. There is also the creativity and imagination that we see which is stellar stuff. The colour work we see is really nice. I like how we see the hues and tones in the colours create the shading, highlights and shadow work along with how we see the power working for Elita. I also like the fact that this story isn't going to slow down anytime soon. With the direction this seems to be going and how the different avenues by different characters are being presented is great. I know famous last words and all but Hector needs to make more appearances in the future. This really is a great little book and shows why Scout Comics is always a go to company for quality books.

James Pruett (A/CA) Scott Van Domelen (C) Ilaria Fella
After discovering the Changelings’ plans for human children, Jennifer, Elita, and Alejandro find themselves on the run from their hunters who are attempting to eliminate Elita as a threat, as her reputation continues to inspire the desperate humans. While attempting to avoid detection by following the remnants of antiquated airmail beacons and fire watch towers, the crew find themselves in the middle of a hijacking of a MassiveMart supply train, the only remaining economic powerhouse in the region, full of rare supplies on its way to the wealthy class that are working in conjunction with the invading horde. Will these marauders become allies or another threat?
Hector, Alejandro and Elita cousin. The one who helped their mother take care of Jacob’s body. We learn a little more of what is going on within the world around them. Which if you have gathered what kind of creatures these are by now, if not you could say Midnight Sky has changelings. Think of watching those famous movies and stories about creatures taking the original person and swapping out their identity, bringing those to their world and them to our world.
But before that, the train they have taken out. Locked up with coffee and well.. Armed forces that have captured children as cargo. At this point in time, might as well put the past behind their backs while once again defending themselves against these heavy geared up soldiers. We learn more about Elita as her power is triggered by a little drop of blood, slicing her arm to protect her brother and family. Elita wipes out the threat, leaving nothing alive except one guard who can’t stand and bunch of captured kids heading toward Orlando, but for what? Possibly to seek out more of what Elita is.
As they figure out to their next move is, while needing to get out of the area again due to a possible distress call. It seems whomever has been watching is one big ass changeling. Because now, Elita is considered an Alpha of what she is. Which makes the rest of her family and now cousin and partner a high risk threat to be killed or captured.
Clearly this isn’t the end of Midnight Sky. However it took four issues to really get to the juicy bits of the universe. And it’s quite interesting that the Free Comic Book Day Issue #0 isn’t present at all during this series. But a taste of possibly yet to come? Hopefully now, Midnight Sky will start being more than what is offered, their good don’t get me wrong. But I feel like four issues to really get the sense of things, while jumping between flashbacks and present days. It could have said more, now we have to wait for the next installments to help further the stories that James Pruett is creating.
Midnight Sky acts like it’s a TV show wrapping up it’s first Season.

This Twitter Thread Satirizing The Way Men Talk About Women; It’s Too Hilarious
The rivalry and difference of opinion within the two genders is a historic one. Both men and women have their concerns about the opposite sex. Both genders have their versions of gender stereotypes.
A Twitter account has a classic way to make parodies of ridiculous gender roles by flipping their roles. They would start a conversation like “What if dads heard the stupid advice that working moms hear?” And the conversation that follows is insanely hilarious.
Their recent satirical role reversal was born in the form of this question.
My friend is a history teacher. She’s compiling a list of great historical figures and she needs a male to add to the list. Suggestions?
— manwhohasitall (@manwhohasitall) September 1, 2017
That was just the right poke at the idea that people often find it struggling to diversify the list of great individuals with some worthy women – as if there are not enough options. People jumped in with all kinds of suggestions, comments, and thoughts which resulted in an infuriatingly hilarious Twitter thread and a masterpiece of sarcasm.
not a lot of people know, but Mark Twain was actually a man
— G Swain (@Swainwalker) September 2, 2017
I think that’s been debunked though. How could that wonderful writing be done by a man?
— Kate Holly-Clark (@AntikaNueva) September 2, 2017
It’s just biology; men are fine at some things, like lifting heavy objects. But they’re not good at everything, like women are.
— G Swain (@Swainwalker) September 2, 2017
True, look how ‘hysterical’ they get watching sport – you wouldn’t want to trust nuclear codes with them.

Granted he was the lover of the Russian queen, but do we really want to parade the antics of a cat that really was gone before our children?
— Shaula Evans (@ShaulaEvans) September 2, 2017
Shaula, maybe rather than judge men on their sexual reputations, we should recognise the agency sex provided within a limited social sphere?

Midnight Sky #3
Midnight Sky #3 Scout Comics 2019 Written by James Pruett Illustrated by Scott Van Domelen Coloured by Ilaria Fella "Salvation Children." Staring into the face of death from uncaged wild animals at the Florida Zoo, Jennifer and her two children, Alejandro and Elita, must find a way to escape before becoming dinner themselves. But if that was not horrifying enough, the truth is revealed as to why hundreds, if not thousands, of children are being hunted and captured by the creatures that have invaded and are rapidly replacing humans. The answer leads them to Orlando, the city where dreams come true, but it is no longer the happy place they remember from their childhood. We left off with Alejandro being thrown into the enclosure of white tiger. That is where we pick things up. I like that because well that was a cliffhanger ending and it was also the perfect opportunity to see what his hybrid result is. The opening here goes so much better than I could have possibly imagined it would. This dude they met, Mississippi, worked at the zoo with animals and he loves that tiger but more importantly he knows about animals, predators and the like which by the way is what they pretty much are, predators. The story & plot development we see through the sequence of events that unfold as well as how the reader learns information is extremely well done. There is a really good strong way that these events and circumstances come about that fleshes out the story further and it's so well executed time and again. The character development continues to impress me here. This issue we get to see more of their personalities emerge and while I still don't know why Elita is still so childlike and yet Alejandro is such the teenager by contrast. Also I stated last time around I wanted to see more of Hector didn't I? Yeah I believe I did after all he's the one who helped bury her husband or the being that replaced him. The pacing for this book is amazing and how the ebb & flow of the story moves through it's pages is such a pleasant journey. I like that this isn't so much as them being conscripted into some retaliation or resistance to fight back against these beings. Instead, for now, we're seeing them travel and talk and work out what and who they are. Jennifer has to watch herself for while she sees her children as her children she often refers to others as it's and this can put her at odds with her son. Whether he realises the difference or not is something but she's much too free with her words being used carelessly. The interiors here are very well rendered. I like the linework and how we see the varying weights being utilised to create or bring out this attention to detail. The tiger is beautiful and I love it's visage and ferocity that we see through the work. The faces and facial expressions that we see are expressive and filled with emotion and this along with the body language really does expand the characterisation in ways the words alone just cannot do. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the perspective and the angles in the panels show a talented eye for storytelling. This is one of those book where the backgrounds are integral to the story and should be utilised to their fullest and we really do see the most being of what we see. The colour work is really well done and the subtlety that we see with it is amazingly well done. The flesh tones within the faces and how the change ever so much really create a great impact that is almost subliminal. Throughout I love the shading, highlights and shadow work done at that same level throughout the book. The way that this story moves forward and how we see the twists and turns come into play leave the reader restless for more. After hearing what we have and knowing what we know, what is to come next cannot come quick enough. James is telling one hell of a story and his creative team artistically are nailing it. Scout is home to some of today's most original and interesting offerings and it's high time you found out for yourself why.

“Salvation Children.” Staring into the face of death from uncaged wild animals at the Florida Zoo, Jennifer and her two children, Alejandro and Elita, must find a way to escape before becoming dinner themselves.
Mr. Mississippi had a technique of testing people. Whether they are normal or if they are those monsters, Alejandro was going to become the next meal for his white and black strip tiger. One thing we also learn from this soon to be dinner encounter is how tough Alejandro skin really is, it’s so tough that the tigers tooth broke off while trying to rip off his arm. Leaving a nice piece of treasure as a reminder. And if you’re wondering, the man got what he deserved.
Finally we get introduced to the daytime atmosphere. This yellowish golden tint that surrounds everything is nice to the eye, whether its pre-morning or afternoon, it’s just about what you see when and if you’re around a desert once the sun comes up or as it starts to head down from the day. Usually a military grade flashlight can detect these creatures, Dante, the dog is now a more useful tool of finding out if even a group of people approaching them could be alerted if necessary.
It also seems, as the time started of whatever is actually going on that Jennifer’s family started to break apart. It’s a common situation, especially if you’re the one who supposedly killed a cousins mother. What is really a mother though? Or was it someone else trying to pretend it is them. Which lead into the fact that Jennifer had to self defend this time around then when she met Jacob, if that was even her husband to begin with as well. Hence why you sometimes hear that Midnight Sky is like a combination of “They Live” to “Invasion of the Body Snatchers”.
Food is low, hunting is now a thing with a sling shot thanks to Alejandro practicing at the Library during his free time when not reading books. Elita seems her choice of food is vegetarian, so what would have been her food was taken by Dante (the dog). Lunch or dinner was soon interrupted by the bridge coming down, upon further investigation. It’s like the ol saying “It’s a small world after all.” As they met up with the cousin that will always remember what Jennifer did.
As we end the third issue, it’s nice to see whats going on around them and some of the past to fill in on relationships or memories of a place. But when does it pick up a bit? There’s a little action, traveling, and then ends on a continuation for the next part which next is the fourth and final issue? I’m not quite sure, usually with comics we have an idea of how many are in a series. Overall, the setting of Midnight Sky is, and what could be soon to come of reality today. Living with Monsters, not trusting anyone. And fighting for our lives while surviving the dreaded world of what is to come.

James Pruett (A/CA) Scott Van Domelen (C) Ilaria Fella
Covers By Scott Van Domelen (also Invasion of the Body Snatchers Homage)
For over a decade the world has been at war with an invisible, secret enemy that is undetectable because they look like everyone else. What would your friends do or say when they discover that your children aren’t what they appear to be? Jennifer finds herself in this dilemma when her son Alejandro’s true identity is revealed to her fellow survivors horded up in their refuge in a former bank in south Tampa. To make matters worse, her daughter, Elita, a half-breed decides to take matters into her own hands and the results are cataclysmic.
We continue right where last issue stopped. Elita, has some sort of powers it seems. Almost like a “blood thirst”, and can take out any of these so called infected. As the random group that came in to take one of Jennifer’s children, we learn Alejandro is afraid of his own sister. Could you blame him? His sister is out to destroy those that infect others, it almost seems that Elita may not have complete control of her abilities yet as well. We don’t fully gather what exactly Elita is, but these other kinds know. However they didn’t seem to know that what Elita is is actually more “grown up” than what they’re used to knowing. As if Elita was a baby stage, which she’s not.
Once cleared from the ambush, Jennifer packed up and left with her two kids. Hoping to find some sort of shelter for the night, they try the abandoned zoo. Upon memories of visiting when it was actually a running place, Jennifer is startled with a person wanting to know their business. A shelter is all they needed, but is anyone really trust-able?
The conclusion is rather interesting, but makes you wonder more and more of who and if you can trust anyone you encounter. This lonely guy, seems to have his own agenda. Which makes you wonder if this treatment is how he feeds his only surviving Lion. I can’t imagine what this man will be dealing with next issue from the mother, but maybe even worst punishment from the daughter.
More flashbacks with variety of colors, because this is all happening at night it’s basically the same type of palette from last issue. Dark colors to signify night, with some bright colorful pages of flashbacks. However in this particular flashback, what happened at the zoo? Did someone already have this ability like Elita? Or did someone else have it that transferred from them to their kid. It seems Midnight Sky has more stories within, than just one.

Midnight Sky #2
Midnight Sky #2 Scout Comics 2019 Written by James Pruett Illustrated by Scott Van Domelen Coloured by Ilaria Fella For over a decade the world has been at war with an invisible, secret enemy that is undetectable because they look like everyone else. What would your friends do or say when they discover that your children aren't what they appear to be? Jennifer finds herself in this dilemma when her son Alejandro's true identity is revealed to her fellow survivors holed up in their refuge in a former bank in south Tampa. To make matters worse, her daughter, Elita, a half-breed decides to take matters into her own hands and the results are cataclysmic. Well after last issue when folks showed up at the bank with guns well that set Elita off and now we pick up where things left off. What an opening it is too and I have to say that I am more than a little surprised by a couple of things we learn here. Jim really manages to pull out all the stops with the writing here and that we get all of these eyebrow raising moments so quickly one after the other is not only amazingly well done but it also engages the reader, makes them think and see what's beyond the page and that is always the sign of a great writer. The way that this is being told through the story & plot development in how we see the sequence of events unfold and how the reader learns information is exceptionally well done. The character development that we see here is constantly growing, evolving and as aspects and situations are brought to light so we see new sides of their personalities. It is really well done and I like seeing this kind of development which makes them feel more like people and two-dimension characters. When you factor the pacing, which is super strong by the way, into all this we see the twists & turns coming at us and this creates the ebb & flow for the story. So with the way that this is structured and how we feel the journey they are undertaking and that sense of dread of being discovered is all just beautifully showcased. With our wayward siblings here we see two very different people. Elita seems so childlike in her innocence and naivete and Alejandro seems so jaded and angst ridden but far far from stupid. How we see them here is done for a myriad of reasons but is he really afraid of his sister or is he jealous? They have the same parents so why can she do what she does and he cannot? I am going with this in my head until proven otherwise but when you've got siblings and one has an ability to the other doesn't well there's more going on than meets the eye. I am a big fan of the interiors here. The linework is lovely and the way that we see the varying weights being utilised to bring out the attention detail works on so many levels. That we see backgrounds being utilised here is fantastic and I still think there are a few missed opportunities but oh well, because when we see things like the swamp flashback, boy oh boy is that something to behold plus I like the way we see depth perception, scale and how they enhance the moments. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show this strong eye for storytelling. The colour work is sensational. There are so many different ways that the colour has to be applied, daylight, night time and of course with that cloud permanently over everything so to see colour through all that and to see the hues and tones utilised for shading and shadows is really very well done indeed. So we meet Hector, albeit much too briefly, and now I want to see more of him. Oh this is a great story and the whole idea of being overtaken and not have this resistance force to fight them off, like we'd see in some Hollywood thing, makes this all the more charming and interesting to me. More like in V now that I think about it. Regardless this is well written and beautifully illustrated and it is yet another title from Scout that you need to have.

Midnight Sky #8
Midnight Sky #8 Scout Comics 2019 Written by James Pruett Illustrated by Scott Van Domelen Coloured by Ilaria Fella Jennifer and Elita fight for their lives against the horde of swamp creatures that are trying to prevent them from rescuing Alejandro from the Changelings. Meanwhile, Alejandro finds himself face to face with the Prime Changeling and discovers that he shares more than just a species as it is revealed that the Prime is his true father. Now, Alejandro is faced with the most important decision of his life, whether loyalty to his true bloodline and heritage is more powerful than the love of his human mother and family with the fate of the world at stake. I really enjoy this book. The opening here is fantastic as we see Jennifer and Elita fighting for their lives against one heck of a great creature. Great because of how we see it not because of what it actually is mind you. The creativity and imagination that we see is off the charts and it just takes a cue from evolution on steroids to make it come to life. That the cavalry comes in the nick of time and it is who it is should come as no surprise even though it did surprise me lol. I like the way that this is being told. The story & plot development we see through how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information is presented exceedingly well. The character development is fantastic thanks to how we see the narration, the dialogue, the character interaction as well as how they act and react to the situations and circumstances the encounter. The pacing is superb and as it takes us through the pages revealing more and more of the story along with the twists & turns really pull us into this beautifully. How we see this being structured and how the layers within the story continue to grow, evolve, strengthen and emerge anew depending on how the avenues open up. The bits that we see within the layers add extra depth and complexity to the story as we see Alejandro’s story unfold and how the family comes together to find him. These work with the main arc or surround it and really are great in how we see the bigger picture. How we see everything working together to create the stroy’s ebb & flow as well as how it moves the story forward is so well achieved. The interiors here are absolutely wonderful! The linework that we see is phenomenal and how the varying weights and techniques are being utilised to create the detail work that we see is magnificent. I do really like the style of the work we see here and its strong comic book style work because it just adds this uplifting feel to it that is infectious. That we see background being utilised as they are not only enhance the moments but how they work within the composition of the panels to bring us depth perception, a sense of scale and the overall sense of size and scope to the story is great to see. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a strong, talented eye for storytelling. The colour work is fantastic! How we see the various hues and tones within the colours being utilised to create the shading, highlights and shadow work is extremely well rendered. This has been one of my guilty pleasure books. James really hit upon a great idea and he’s done an extremely nice job in bringing it to life with this diverse group of characters. With intelligent writing and stellar characterisation alongside this level & quality in the artwork this book stands out and shows us why Scout continues to know what great storytelling is.

Midnight Sky #1 Advance Review
Midnight Sky #1 Advance Review Scout Comics 2019 On Sale Sept. 25th 2019 Written by James Pruett Illustrated by Scott Van Domelen Coloured by Ilaria Fella Fresh from the pages of Scout Presents: Midnight Sky Free Comic Book Day, Midnight Sky is Invasion of the Body Snatchers meets They Live. What would you do if you discovered your son wasn't really your son? He may look like him, act like him, but deep down in your soul you just know... he's been replaced. Then your worst fears are realized when the light hits his face just right and you accidentally see his true appearance for yourself. But he isn't the only one you discover... your neighbour, your friend, even your husband. Do you scream? Do you run? Or do you fight back? And how can it be that your daughter is the best and, perhaps, last hope for mankind? First let me say that a traditional splash page to open the book is a fantastic thing to see. I miss them and when we see them and see them done this well it's just a reminder that sometimes the classics shouldn't go away. The opening here is interesting to say the least. It definitely grabs the readers' attention and raises some eyebrows while the reader processes what they see. It also sets the stage characterisation wise for one character. It generates a lot of curiosity in the reader as well and what James does with this is really pull the reader in beautifully. The way that this is structured is really well done. From the opening to the last page there is this really nice pacing of the story & plot development along with the character development. It has this way of moving through the pages creating that ebb & flow which kind of carries the reader along like the current of the ocean. Sometimes smooth, sometimes rough waters but always in motion and that's a nice thing to see in this. Also as the story moves forward, I did mention the strong pacing right, we get to see and learn a good deal about the world and what's going on which almost feels as if we are getting force fed but no not at all it all fits into the story somehow without that crowded feeling and again James impresses me with that. The interiors here are really well done also. That first page splash page is your first look at the book and what we see is amazing. The attention to detail that we see here through the way that the varying weights of the linework are being utilised make this come to life exceptionally well. From the weathering of the buildings and the angle and viewpoint it has this near Norman Rockwell feel. This is also the same kind of work and intensity that we see throughout the issue and with the creativity and imagination this world comes to life before our eyes. The utilisation of page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels shows a really good eye for storytelling. While there are a fair amount of backgrounds being utilised I would like to see more, really flesh out the moments and bring that sense of size and scope. When you start with some then omit them the impact lessens. I do like the colour work here as well. The way light sources are utilised to create shading and shadows and the different tones that we see as a result are a great compliment to the linework. James may be CEO of Scout Comics but he has a great resume when it comes to writing and sometimes we may forget that. So I am thrilled he's back at the typewriter, god I'm old, bringing us a very unique and different take on a theme that's never been done enough. I mean this really has pod people with Independence Day vibe going on, hell even aspects of V so yeah this is why I love Scout. James showcases that great storytelling comes from everywhere and that Scout is a company you need to pay attention to! So make sure you order yours now.

Fresh from the pages of Scout Presents: Midnight Sky Free Comic Book Day, Midnight Sky is Invasion of the Body Snatchers meets They Live. What would you do if you discovered your son wasn’t really your son? He may look like him, act like him, but deep down in your soul you just know… he’s been replaced. Then your worst fears are realized when the light hits his face just right and you accidentally see his true appearance for yourself. But he isn’t the only one you discover… your neighbor, your friend, even your husband. Do you scream? Do you run? Or do you fight back? And how can it be that your daughter is the best and, perhaps, last hope for mankind?
We open up to a little prologue of the days before this never ending change between the world of Midnight Sky. I already found one person from this story I don’t like, and I hope he doesn’t show up (which he might) for what he did to a dog. If anything hopefully the ladies husband got what he deserved, especially if he was having affairs with other people.
Thirteen years later, the newborn Elita, grown up a bit and is now living in a world we all would hate to be in. It’s almost getting to the point of just looking out your window in todays reality. How much longer till we have to defend ourselves off from everyone else? Minus these “Monsters” that appear in this comics universe. It’s just only a matter of time.
I’m glad for sure that the lady who was with this abusive, not caring father is no longer with him. Which makes me wonder if any other issues show us more to unraveling what has happened between those two. Did she confront him? Did he meet his demise by lechers looking for “their kind”. Time will tell, and I’ve come to the conclusion that dogs are like apocalypse type best friends in comics. You don’t ever really see anything about cats, but I know cats won’t defend their owners (well some can).
And as we draw near the end of the first Midnight Sky, another dog has joined. The family group is no longer safe, and whelp. Maybe trying to keep secrets from others could cost other peoples lives. No matter what, it’s family first and others second. However honestly is a big key and role when it comes to survival.
As we look at the colors, art and story. Like I mentioned in my previous post, the artwork from the Free Comic Book Day cover really caught my eye. It was then my first introduction into the world of Scout Comics very unique title collections. The illustrations Scott use mixed with the colors by Ilaria have a right tune of soothing into a perfect sunny day, to down right feel of coldness with a dirty atmosphere of lost hope. James the writer and creator of Midnight Sky seems to have nodds to other type of stories we’ve seen, but told with his own visions. Midnight Sky I feel is the next top thing for sci-fi stories and comics.

Zinnober #3
Zinnober #3 Scout Comics 2018 Written by Thorsten Borchhaus & Ralf Singh Pencilled by Ralf Singh Inked by Cristian Docolomansky Coloured by Ilaria Fella & Nic Chapuis Lettered by Taylor Esposito A run in with the Followers spells trouble for our group, especially for James. It's not revenge they seek, but something far more sinister. It's up to Claire, with some help from her new friend, Andrew, and dog, Ares, to bail her partner out. But what do the Followers really want and who is the mysterious, disfigured man among them. Will the group be able to reach Portsmouth harbour in time and be able to regain control of the world from the dragons? I kind of miss the old Previously in the credits section. Not that its always necessary but it’s still nice to have. The opening here is wonderfully done and the short sweet moment we see Andrew alone before interrupted is nice. Amidst all the chaos surrounding them and of the Followers themselves to see something so ordinary as this really leaves an impact. However thanks to the nature of the world they live in that is way too short lived. Still this only reinforces the fact that I like the way that this book is structured. There is a superb ebb & flow the way we see what happens within these pages and that creates a very deceptive fast read. I say this because in all honesty the pacing is rather remarkable and that we learn what we do while things seem to fly by is extremely well done. I am also pretty impressed with how the guys manage to really tie everything together. There are different avenues that are going on but all seem to have a focus on the same things. I know I am not explaining this well enough but somehow the Followers, our group of travellers as well as those we meet in Portsmouth have these tendrils that tie them together. This world is no longer the one they knew there is a new reality and it’s unfolding, unravelling, more and more with each passing day. While I cannot explain it we all know that every time something catastrophic happens new cults and religions pop up and these Followers and their agenda are intriguingly unknown to me and that makes me want to know more. The interiors here are quite good. While I can excuse the lack backgrounds in some instances here that we see say the ground while the top of panel is white is a nice middle ground to their use. Innovative, fresh and one of the best examples of teamwork that I’ve seen. While the linework is crisp, clean and nicely laid down much of what I am drawn to here is through the colouring and the effect that it has. I am a huge fan of what we see here and the utilisation of page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels shows off a great eye for storytelling. The attention to detail that we see is amazing and the faces and facial expressions here just compliment the characterisation. The story and the characterisation here is so good. It is very easy to get swept up in the proceedings here and want to know more. From the organization of these Followers and by that I mean how they’ve galvanised themselves to the folks in Portsmouth and even in Alaska and how much has changed in a short amount of time. We are exposed to just enough that we understand the current state of things but are still left wanting to know more. There are a lot of things left open ended and it’s those places that the folks here make us want to see. Scout Comics is home to some of the more interesting stories on stands today. With the quality and level of storytelling that we see it’s easy to know why I am such a huge supporter of their books and why you should be too.

Zinnober #1
Zinnober #1 Scout Comics 2018 Written by Ralf Singh & Thorsten Brochhaus Pencilled by Ralf Singh Inked by Cristian Docolomansky Coloured by Ilaria Fella Lettered by Taylor Esposito Twenty years ago dragons returned to Earth and laid waste to human civilization. In the event the surviving humans named "Zinnober," Claire, then a young girl, lost her parents to the devastating force of these primeval creatures. Today, she's hell-bent on avenging the death of her family. But will the skills she was taught by her foster-father, the troubled ex-Marine James, be enough to fight an unstoppable enemy older than the Earth itself? Will the knowledge of her newest ally, the young scientist Andrew, bring her even closer to her goal? And what role will the mysterious Followers, a cult of mad dragon worshippers, play in all of this? First thing that I noticed is that this is set in London and I absolutely adore that because all too often something like this will be set in NYC or L.A. and that it’s Europe just enhances my enjoyment here. I went into this blind, without having read anything about it so when I saw the first page I knew we were in for something special. I mean London has fallen it’s nothing more than a wasteland and this image alone is enough to ensure that the reader is going to stick around wanting to know more. This is how you are supposed to feel when you open up a book and see the first page, that rush, that thrill that engulfs you is palpably felt. I like the way that this book is structured. It has a very distinct ebb & flow that is both familiar and yet uniquely it’s own. The World has been all but destroyed people are nothing more than groupings trying to stay alive at any cost and those factions are just dangerous to one another as the return the great majestic beasts once considered myth. I like that our main characters here are a pair of pseudo father and daughter who seem to have no allegiance to anyone but each other. There is something inherently interesting about loners navigating the world this way that piques the interest and curiosity. I am pretty darn impressed with the interiors here as well. The attention to detail is gorgeous and that first page follows throughout the entire book in how we see things come to life. The creativity and imagination on display here is stunning in how fully it has been realised. The characters have this life of their own in how distinct and different that they are makes it fantastic to use sight to read without worry of words. The utilisation of the page layouts here is superb and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels shows of a phenomenal eye for storytelling. I am not going to lie the only thing that keeps from being perfect is the fact we don’t see so every panels filled with backgrounds. This is a post civilised world showcase let it be as much of a character in this book as the people are. One of the things I appreciated about this issue is that we don’t get background information here, we don’t flashback right away to the first appearance of the Dragons no it’s now and we move forward and I like that. We also meet all the different factions that we need to establishing not only the rules of the street but the hierarchy of it as well. It is everything that a first issue could and should be when it comes to establishing a brand new book. With an interesting premise and some excellent pacing, characterisation and story development surrounded by fresh clean interior artwork means that this is the one you need to keep your eye on.
