1980s Fixer Upper Home Renovation

Buying a 1980’s fixer upper requires some courage, but more than that, it requires a lot of vision, which can be a little easier if you aren’t afraid of some elbow grease and if you have a talented daughter to help you out! This is exactly what happened to this lucky mother who had her daughter, Shelby of Farmhouse Living, envision the new areas and improve the spaces that needed improvement.

This fixer upper felt outdated but had the perfect layout for Shelby’s parents and all they really needed to do was add new flooring, bring some cozy furniture and accessories (think layered rugs and slipcovered furniture and add a new kitchen – a space that Shelby’s mom can certainly feel proud to call her own!)

The interiors now feel approachable with coastal farmhouse influences and the homeowners are happy with how they turned out.

Fireplace

According to the designer, the biggest update in this space was the fireplace and the built-ins around it. She used Austin Stone with white mortar added using the German smear method. The mantel is a reclaimed barn beam and the hearth is white concrete.

Coffee table is from local flea market in Texas called First Monday Canton. The top of the table is made from an old door.

Modern Farmhouse with Blue Exterior

Undoubtedly, modern farmhouse is by far the most popular home style these days. We have seen many modern farmhouses with white exteriors, Joanna Gaines-inspired farmhouses, new-construction modern farmhouses, board and batten modern farmhouses and more recently, a modern farmhouse with black and white interiors, but a modern farmhouse with blue exterior is something new to me, and, just between you and I, it feels very refreshing!

Modern Farmhouse with Blue Exterior

This is the kind of home that makes you turn your head if you’re walking by! What a curb-appeal!!!

Exterior Paint Color

The exterior paint color is Sherwin Williams SW 6230 Rainstorm.

Roof

The home combines shingle roof and metal roof. This is a very popular combination for modern farmhouses.

Shutters

One of my favorite things about this home, besides the stunning architectural details, is the custom “barn door-inspired” shutters.

Exterior Trim

The exterior trim paint color is Benjamin Moore White Dove.

Porch Decor

A front porch always adds so much to the curb-appeal to a home. In fact, I don’t think I ever disliked a home with a front porch.

A glass front door with sidelights is flanked by two windows with custom board and batten trim.

Foyer

Although not completely furnished, this home features many great interior design ideas. Paint color is Sherwin Williams SW 7070 Site White.

Hardwood throughout house: Engineered hardwood, Shaw Floors Fairbanks Maple 5 Gold Dust.

Shiplap

Shiplap was installed, not only on the wall, but also as paneling on the bottom of staircase. This gives a seamless look to the entire space. Shiplap paint color is White Dove OC 17 Benjamin Moore.

Railing and front door ares painted in SW Peppercorn.

Kitchen

This is a great way to design a “two-toned kitchen” while keeping everything neutral.

The upper cabinets are painted in White Dove OC 17 Benjamin Moore.

Appliance Garage

A well-designed appliance garage is found on the left, just above the bread compartment. This is the ideal place to hide the toaster. Also, notice the electric outlet inside the cabinet.

The lower cabinets are Maple, stained Phantom.

Sink & Faucet

I love how the dark lower cabinets contrast with the white upper cabinetry. The hutch adds interest to the kitchen as well.

Here, the builder, Tartan Builders, shares some insights about this beautiful project: “This unique project is is one of our favorites because it challenged our creativity and craftsmanship. The homeowners wish was to make it “appear as if the addition had always been apart of the existing home.” Our clients trusted us to deliver and we are thrilled with the results. What you see is the creation of a 1,000SF addition and pool installation. The pool house is meant to serve not only for summer swimming but as an all seasons room for this family of four.”

Neutral Home Interior Ideas

Beautifully designed by two very talented interior designers, Mitzi Maynard and Clare Kennedy, this neutral home has 4 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms (6 including pool house), and a total of 6,500 square feet.

The homeowners began building this neutral home in the fall of 2015, and it was completed in the Spring of 2017. This home combines a few different architectural styles. The exterior is a fresh take on a traditional home, which works well in their established neighborhood in Nashville. The interior of the home has a more Modern/Mediterranean style with a neutral color scheme that is easy on the eyes and soothing to the soul.

Neutral Color Scheme: We were trying to leave the colorful palette of their previous home behind us. They were ready to go neutral so we used natural elements, texture, and mixed metals to bring lay- ers and warmth to the space.

California Home with Boho Interiors

If you knew me personally, you probably would know a few passions of mine, which includes the ocean… being by the sea makes me feel lighter and more connected with my soul. Featuring coastal homes tends to make me feel closer to this happy feeling, which I genuinely hope to extend to you today with this house tour.

Recently renovated by interior designer Raili Clasen (previously featured here), this home features interiors that feel comfortable and easy-going. Here, the designer shares more details about this renovation:

“Our clients, based in Boston, had just bought a beach house in California for their family to spend summers and asked if we would come take a look to just furnish and paint. From the outside, it seemed like an easy project… cute craftsman architecture, big windows, nice landscaping. When we opened the door, our jaw dropped. It had been re-modeled with just about every style of surface material that had trended over the last decade: steel countertops, contemporary tract lighting, four different pebble tiles in one bath, etc..

We were super honest with them knowing how much extra this project was going to be, but they decided they would go for it and do a brand new remodel. We named the project “California Craftsman” and wanted to make sure it felt like a beach vacation. Craftsman homes tend to run dark, so we kept the feel of the heavy wood beams and posts, but painted out everything bright white.

Overall, this house feels exactly like they dreamed about, beachy, cool and vacation-ready.” – Raili Chasen.

“The family wanted as many beds as we could fit, even if it wasn’t to “scale” so we got a bit creative with bunks and also made sure the sofas were a great solution if needed for sleeping.”

New-Construction with Modern Farmhouse Interiors

Built by Altura Homes with interiors by Lauren Smyth and staging by Andi Marshall (recently featured here), this new-construction home with modern farmhouse interiors was featured at the builder’s Spring Parade and it still holds strong as one of their favorite homes.

The designer really wanted the interiors to feel fresh, bright, and warm with hints of industrial/modern decor. She mixed cabinet styles and finishes with industrial elements like the concrete fireplace surround and the custom hood vent in the kitchen. She tied it all together with a color palette of warm oak, black, white and shades of gray. Neutral finishes and palettes are always convenient when designing a new home because they will allow for time to do its thing and not date the look of any space drastically.

AK Construction’s unconventional spin on a modern farmhouse was designed to be a true show stopper. This property was originally being built as a spec home but was swooped up early on in the construction stages and became a one-of-a-kind dream home for a family of four. This 6,626 square foot home is nestled on a picturesque street in Menlo Oaks, California.
