Craftsman Beach House

Hello, my friends! I hope you had a great week and are ready to have a relaxing weekend with your loved ones.

I am really happy to be sharing another beautiful home by Sweenor Builders, Inc.. You will probably recall seeing their Coastal Shingle Home recently featured on Home Bunch. Today, I will be featuring their latest work with This Old House® and I think you will love knowing every detail!

“Every year, This Old House® collaborates with a team of industry professionals and leading home-improvement brands to build a state-of-the art “Idea House.” Sweenor Builders was honored to be asked to build an Idea House for a second time in partnership with Union Studio Architecture and Community Design. The fourth annual Idea House from the trusted home renovation brand, the 2018 home will be built in the historic seaside village of Narragansett, Rhode Island – recently named one of America’s best beach towns by the Boston Globe. Kristen Martone, Sweenor’s in-house designer and owner of Graceke Design led Interior Design on the project.”

Interior Design Ideas: Craftsman Beach House

The 2,700-square-foot cottage has classic Craftsman-style curb appeal and modern looks inside. Located less than a mile from Narragansett’s town beach, it epitomizes what buyers are looking for today: a smaller home that lives large in a tight-knit neighborhood, plenty of bespoke built-ins, luxury amenities including a home gym, dedicated media room and butler’s pantry, and an easy-care backyard designed for “staycation” living.

Foyer

This classic foyer features herringbone White Oak hardwood flooring with a black walnut perimeter. Wall paint color is Glidden’s Swan White.

The fireplace stone veneer by Eldorado was tightly stacked at 30-inch from the floor to the top of the vaulted living room ceiling. The custom mantel is Walnut and the asymmetrical bookshelves were custom-built by Sweenor Builders.

The hallway features coffered ceiling with Cherry wood inlays.

This kitchen carries the simplicity of a Craftsman-style home. You notice the Craftsman influences on the shaker-style cabinets and the trim framing the windows.

Custom slatted drawers crafted in walnut are perfect to store root vegetables.

You really don’t need much space to have a well-designed laundry room. This laundry room was tucked into a small corner of the house where stackable washer and dryer, a hanging rod and even an utility sink with Soapstone countertop creates the ideal space to wash clothing.

Mudroom

How fun it is to see a home with color! This mudroom features shiplap, which was installed with a nickel gap. To add some contrast, the builder painted the mudroom cubbies and trim a in a deep green. Paint color is Glidden’s Royal Hunter Green.

Puppy Included

The mudroom also features a drop zone with upper cabinet with shelving and and a dog bed and feeding station.

This project earned a Gold Award when the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) recognized best-in-class projects at the 2018 Best in American Living

Awards (BALA) at the International Builders’ Show (IBS) in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Built by Sweenor Builders, this custom-built outdoor shower features a pergola roof, privacy panels, and a door laser-cut with a design of schooling fish.

The outdoor shower curved seat and plumbing wall are made out of moisture-resistant knotty western red cedar. Shower paint color is Olympic’s Steely Sea.

Dream Backyard

Outside, you’ll find a soothing soak pool, a sunny patio, and a complete kitchen for dining alfresco.

Accodiring to This Old House, this 7×13-foot pre-cast plunge pool was delivered in one piece, dropped into a 4-foot hole, and then faced with stone veneer and a bluestone ledge.

Full-scale Home Remodel Inspiration

A single dad recently hired the talented Lisa Furey of Lisa Furey Interiors (previously featured here & here) to help with the full-scale gut remodel of a contemporary style home overlooking a gorgeous duck pond and park in Villanova, PA. The designer selected all finishes, from flooring to the millwork. She designed custom cabinetry throughout the home, and selected the handmade tile, stone, plumbing and lighting. The designer also created furniture plans, made the furniture selection, designed window treatments and rugs. The best part of this job for her was creating a happy space for a great dad and his endearing young daughter.

I really hope you guys like this home as much as I do. What grabs my attention the most is how the interior designer reinvented the spaces and brought a comforting feel to every space. And I think that’s how we all want to feel when we open our front door.

Style

How do you add your personal touch to your own home? I like to make minor changes around my home with pillows, rugs and even draperies. The sunnier it gets out there, the lighter and happier my home becomes.

Mirror

Lisa Furey is one of my favorite interior designers simply because she know how to bring balance to any space. Take a look at this and notice the details. There’s nothing missing and nothing is overstuffed. Perfection!

In my opinion, an overstuffed space feels more like a store display than actually a home, and I am seeing a lot of that these days.

The kitchen floating shelves and kitchen hood are custom. You can save a lot of money by using floating shelves instead of cabinets and it gives a more open feel to the kitchen.

Mad Men “Lite” Takes Flight

A California palette gets cozy with mid-century furnishings in Brooklyn

In 2010, California natives Alex Burgnon and Tom Stuart purchased an 880-square-foot apartment in Brooklyn after renting in Manhattan and Los Angeles. They were drawn to the unique history of the Clinton Hill Co-ops built in 1941 by the U.S. Navy as housing for workers at the then-bustling Navy Yard. The buildings became rentals after World War II and eventually went co-op in the 1980s. The unit that the couple bought was on the second floor facing a courtyard, and hadn’t been renovated since the mid-’80s. It retained the original parquet floors, faux-granite Formica countertops, and a badly-configured floor plan that wasted a lot of valuable space. While the non-functional kitchen/dining space was the impetus for the project, by the end, every wall, ceiling, and floor had been either gutted or resurfaced to stunning effect.

Tom, a real estate agent with Corcoran’s Fort Greene office, knew that a more functional, ergonomic space with better flow and storage could be achieved within the existing walls. When it came time for their own apartment refresh, the couple turned to Sweeten alums and designers Casey and Kumar of Studio Miller Atre for a conceptual design that matched their lifestyle and design taste. Their project was posted on Sweeten—a free service that paired them up with a vetted contractor. Tom had, in fact, recommended Sweeten to other clients in the building and had seen the transformations firsthand (See Samantha and Sean’s kitchen reno!). Their Sweeten contractor was chosen to execute the vision, while the designers consulted in tandem with their architect, David, on design and code issues.

Casey and Kumar established a palette and a mix of materials that would evoke the homeowner’s beloved home state within a contemporary mid-century look. Alex’s grandparents were artists and had given them several pieces of original mid-century artwork they had painted. A modern surround was an ideal way to showcase those pieces “without fully recreating a ‘Mad Men’ set.” As a purser flight attendant with American Airlines, Alex has quite a passion for classic commercial airliners like Braniff International Airways from the ‘60s. Several collectibles designed for the airways by textile designer Alexander Girard can be found in their home.

To begin, given that the dining/kitchen area flowed directly into the living room, Casey and Kumar wanted to design a partition to allow for visual flow while providing definition between the two spaces. The solution was a series of vertical, floor-to-ceiling walnut slats that tied into the walnut cabinetry in the kitchen, as well as the floating walnut decorative wall panel in the living room. “The whole concept was to establish a good visual flow and continuity from room to room,” explained Alex. A favorite purchase was a modular Vitsoe 606 unit that became their workspace in the living room. “It was designed by German industrial designer Dieter Rahms, and first produced by Vitsoe in Denmark in 1961,” said Alex. “We were looking for a simple, highly flexible desk/wall unit that also looked really good.”

In the dining area, the designers dropped the ceiling by five inches to allow space for wiring to the dining room pendant, as well as recessed lighting that runs on the Lutron Caseta dimming system. Due to the age of the buildings, the electrical system was often overloaded by modern-day appliances, and the installation of a new panel now supports heavier usage. They also took the opportunity to add electrical outlets in more convenient locations throughout the apartment.

Seen through the walnut slats, the kitchen’s white-and-walnut theme was offset by a geometric tile backsplash and Caesarstone countertops. Matte black hardware provided simple, linear contrast while wooden pendants added warmth. The dishwasher and sink were moved to more logical locations, while full-height uppers and the wall of cabinets surrounding the refrigerator provide ample storage. In the new island, there are deep pull-out drawers for pots and pans, as well as integrated plastic bins for trash and recycling, making it simple to wipe crumbs and other debris from the island directly into the trash can.” The extra countertop surface allows multiple people to work in the kitchen at the same time.

While the initial goal was to improve the kitchen, Alex and Tom decided to completely redo the bathroom. The bathtub was switched out for a walk-in shower with a large, sliding glass door, and a pedestal sink was replaced by a vanity with storage. Now, the space feels luxurious, thanks to the walnut, white, and black palette anchored by a bold leafy wallpaper along one wall. They also indulged in a Toto washlet toilet, with a heated seat and dryer. “This is arguably our most treasured new possession,” joked Alex.

Lastly, the bedroom received a refresh. Closet doors went all the way to the ceiling, powder-coated wire shelving from Home Depot were added, and automatic lights were installed—a “game-changer,” said Tom. Behind the headboard, the couple pulled in a textured grasscloth wallpaper at Casey’s suggestion. “She brought us countless options for material choices we never would have considered on our own,” said Tom. “Her solid design instincts allowed her to really tune into our personal tastes and preferences.” On display in the newly redesigned space are designs by Alexander Girard, including a reproduced Braniff Airway in-flight blue throw and a vintage black-and-white printed pillow. Alex’s Braniff Boeing 707 model, built from a plastic kit, now hangs from the ceiling in the bedroom.

Their Sweeten contractor was the perfect choice for executing their vision—in personality, budget, and in his attention to detail. “His team was brilliant in their execution of Casey and Kumar’s design concept and worked with them to make sure every detail was as indicated. He was always available when we needed to work something out, and consistently offered the solutions we required. The quality and finish of the work are both top-notch,” Alex shared.

Looking back, Tom and Alex share that the most difficult thing about the renovation was “wrapping our heads around spending bigger sums of money. Neither of us had been through this process before, and there was a certain trepidation even after we had committed to construction.” They were, however, able to finance the project with equity that they had built since owning the apartment. And as a real estate agent, Tom knew that the substantial increase in the apartment’s resale value justified the overall cost. “In the end, we reminded ourselves that we are both staunchly home-centric people who place a great deal of value on the comfort and serenity that only a beautiful, functional home can give us,” he said. “Not only did it feel like 300 square feet was added to the apartment but we soon realized after this project was complete that it was worth every single penny.”

Home Renovation

Hello everyone! How are you doing today? I hope you enjoy this beautiful home renovation done by Molly Griggs Interiors and with photography by Marina Storm of Picture Perfect House (also featured here). This is a two-story colonial home that belongs to a young family of four. They purchased their home and it was gutted to the studs to make it more open and functional for their family.

In my opinion, this home feels trendy without being over-the-top. I am sorry, but please correct if I am the only person thinking that people are overdoing when it comes to trends lately. There’s too much of the same and very little authenticity out there. Every house looks the same and everyone seems to be using the same “formula”. I have been working hard to find spaces that have a “soul” and I hope you enjoy seeing how beautifully renovated and decorated this home was. Nothing feels overdone and you can picture people actually living in these rooms. After all, that’s why we spend time and money with our home; to comfortably live in it.

Interior Design Ideas: Home Renovation

White kitchens will always be a classic choice, add neutral walls and dark-stained hardwood flooring to the mix and you certainly will end-up with a space that will stand the test of time. I feel that you can and should have fun with accessories, such as decor, lighting and even with certain pieces of furniture, but try to keep the main elements classic, especially if this is not your forever home. Modern Farmhouse Interior Design Ideas

Having a blog for ten years is truly a blessing. I am so grateful for each and every one of you, my loyal readers and I am also grateful for all of the many interior designers, builders and architects I feature on the blog with frequency. It’s also fun to have new people on the blog from time to time and you will agree with me after seeing Erika Gervin’s work of South Harlow Interiors. She’s being featured for the first time on Home Bunch and I can’t wait to share more. Her work feels current and balanced.

This project was a complete gut/remodel in Leucadia, California and the goal was to create a modern coastal aesthetic that was light/bright and inviting for a young family of five.

I hope you have a relaxing time seeing this home and feel inspired by this modern farmhouse tour.

Modern Farmhouse Interior Design Ideas

Every room of this home feels calming and inviting. The Great Room features a painted brick fireplace and custom built-ins with floating White Oak shelves.

Furniture was a combination of sourced through trade resources and custom. Decor was from South Harlow Home.

Drapery

Window treatments are custom-made with Larsen fabrics (available through the designer).

Walls are painted in “Sherwin Williams Snowbound”. The ceiling features a thick beam and it’s painted in “Sherwin Williams Bright Ceiling White SW 7007”.

Interior Design Ideas: Home Renovation

Hello everyone! Do you have plans for the weekend? The weather is still very cold here and I am planning on slowing down and making some healthy and hearty meals and read “Design your next chapter” by Debbie Travis. I just got it and I am excited to start reading it. Let me know your thoughts if you have already read it. It seems to be a short and fun book – perfect to be read on a weekend.

But before I take a few hours to read my book, I hope you enjoy this beautiful home renovation done by Molly Griggs Interiors and with photography by Marina Storm of Picture Perfect House (also featured here). This is a two-story colonial home that belongs to a young family of four. They purchased their home and it was gutted to the studs to make it more open and functional for their family.

In my opinion, this home feels trendy without being ridiculous. I am sorry, but please correct if I am the only person thinking that people are overdoing when it comes to trends lately. There’s too much of the same and very little authenticity out there. Every house looks the same and everyone seems to be using the same “formula”. I have been working hard to find spaces that have a “soul” and I hope you enjoy seeing how beautifully renovated and decorated this home was. Nothing feels overdone and you can picture people actually living in these rooms. After all, that’s why we spend time and money with our home; to comfortably live in it.

Counterstools are Serena & Lily in Fog. These counterstools are comfortable and super easy to clean, which is a must when you have kids (of all ages) at home.

This kitchen also features a practical bar with built-in beverage fridge and upper cabinets. Great design!

The kitchen walls are Benjamin Moore “Classic Gray”.

The kitchen cabinets continue to the dining area, allowing for more storage and counter space, which can also be used a butler’s pantry when entertaining.

This new-construction Florida home by LunDev Custom Homes should inspire your new home design ideas!

Empty-nester Home Renovation

Sometimes it can be quite hard to adjust to any type of change life brings and we might see ourselves with certain decisions to make, especially after we have raised our children and find ourselves to be the new empty-nesters on the block. But as we also know, time allows us to adjust to these new changes and many times make things better than they used to be. For these empty-nesters, change came as a reason to find the right home and completely renovate it just the way they have dreamed, and for that, they counted on a very talented team of professionals; Stephanie Frees from Plain & Posh for the custom cabinetry (previously featured here & here) and Lisa Sullivan of Tate Enterprises for the interior design.

Here, Stephanie Frees shares some insights on this incredible renovation project:

“I had worked with the homeowners on their former home and they reached back out to have me help them on this new one. Although empty-nesters, they actually wanted a larger home to be able to entertain their expanding family and look forward to the years when the home will be full of grandchildren. The kitchen was very large, but an extremely unusual shape. We reconfigured an odd angled wall , that made the main working area a nice “L” with the first island. Then, the second island was created for baking and keeping the guest out of the main working area when there are large crowds.”

This kitchen used to be quite outdated with way too much going on and the layout made you feel almost as if you had to run a marathon every time you needed to cook. The designers did an amazing job not only with how gorgeous this entire space looks but also with how functional it is.

Happy new day, my friends! How are you doing? I won’t lie… some days are not very easy. Today I am feeling a little frustrated with this pandemic and I really, really wish life was back to normal. Riverside Modern Farmhouse Tour

It’s always a pleasure to share Heather Scott Home & Design‘s work (previously featured here), but this one feels extra special since it’s the designer’s personal home.

After many years living in Arizona, Heather and her husband, Scott, decided to leave the hot summers for a place that felt calmer and cooler. The designer’s father has traveled to Ennis, Montana for years to fly-fish on the Madison River and this seemed to be the perfect place to build their new Modern Farmhouse home.

The lot is angled towards the river and the scenic mountains which certainly inspired this couple to design a home that feels close to nature and close to their loved ones.

Find a quiet spot and dream away… this home will leave you feeling more relaxed.

Riverside Modern Farmhouse Tour

What a stunning home!!! The white siding is beautifully accentuated by black metal-framed windows and black metal roof.

Entry Hall

The designer’s home features a timeless blend of modern and rustic elements throughout. In the foyer, reclaimed corral boards were installed on the walls to bring a rustic/warm feel.

The foyer leads either to a mudroom and garage or to a spacious great room.

“The design goal of the home was to have the same serene, inviting feeling as the scenic views that surround the home. A simple palette of white walls, black window framing and warm wood accents allow the eye to focus on the lush exterior, essentially bringing the outside in.”

Kitchen

From the Designer: “The kitchen in our Montana Dog House features a restful color palette of timeless neutrals, a sense of simplicity, and symmetry in the design. The priority was to make timeless choices. Colorado Yule honed marble countertops and taupe floor-to-ceiling cabinetry brighten the open kitchen. A custom plaster hood with a wood edge ties in with the ceiling beams. A linear pendant made of copper illuminates and completes the clean look of the Montana kitchen.” – Heather.

Kitchen Island

In the kitchen, the designer used a linear lighting pendant made of copper piping. The dimensions are 60″ W x 48″ H. and it’s available through the designer.

Dining Room

In the adjacent dining room, an extendable Oak dining table is complemented with a mix of custom slipcovered seating.

Ceiling Details: The ceilings in the living room and kitchen are 10 feet tall, and the dining room between them boasts a vaulted ceiling that is 23 feet high at its peak.

From the designer: “As with most of the main spaces in this home, we opted for the same serene and restful palette of neutrals, white, black, and wood mixed in. This neutral palette draws your eye to the spectacular river and mountain views that surround the home. A dark wood four poster bed is flanked by weathered wood nightstands. Draperies with an acanthus leaf motif in a dark charcoal colorway add an elegant and airy feeling to the windows that open up to the lush exterior.”

The home is angled toward the river and the mountains beyond.

California Fixer-upper

Hi, everyone! How are you today? Spring seems to be miles and miles away from where we live but this recently renovated California Fixer Upper is bringing some happy colors and sunshine to our day.

Here, the designer shares more insight on this beautiful project:

“With the help of McGriff Architects, IDF Studio transformed this single-story Bay Area home into the envy of the block. What was once a dark 1960’s fixer-upper has been completely rebooted as a two-story dream modern farmhouse. The interiors were thoroughly rearranged, introducing a light-filled kitchen, an inviting dining area, and a cozy family room with beautiful built-in storage. The vibe is decidedly boho and beachy, making this family of four feel like they’re on perpetual holiday.”

The exterior of modern farmhouse now features white board and batten siding, black windows and white fence.

Custom Build Home Interior Design Ideas

How wonderful it is to have each and every one of you here on the blog today. How are you feeling? It still feels very cold and we’re having so much snow this winter, and I have to be honest with you, I feel happier when the sun is shinning out there. Grey days are not fun and not very good for our mood, right? That’s why I feel that sharing homes that are not only beautiful, but also “feel” good, can lift our spirit and bring us some inspiration. With every post I prepare for you guys, I am always hoping that you will have a good time and feel a little happier in this place. That’s always my priority.

Now, can we talk about this new house tour? I am really excited to feature this “Southern Louisiana meets Mediterranean” custom build home and the designer is sharing all of the details below. Keep reading!

“Call it an empty-nester opportunity. With their twin boys grown and gone and their daughter just off to college, a couple went searching for an expanse of land in Texas where they could build the home they’d always wanted–and house their horses as well. While the couple enlisted architect Clay Nelson to devise plans for a Tuscan-style farmhouse with an open plan and spacious outdoor living areas, they approached designer Traci Connell with a somewhat different request: The Louisiana natives wanted the interiors to celebrate their Southern roots. “That struck a chord with me,” Connell says. “My daughter was born in southern Louisiana. I had this connection to the feeling they wanted–that Creole originality and uniqueness.” Connell selected finishes that refer back to her clients’ childhood homes — whitewashed brick in the breakfast area, wrought-iron balusters on the stairs — while she incorporated their objects and heirlooms into the design. “The house is grounded,” the wife says. “In every room, there’s a touch of something from a family member or from Louisiana.” Connell had a slightly different focus in the nearby barn, which also includes the husband’s office. “This was his escape,” she explains. The barn was such a hit that it’s become a favorite gathering place for friends and family as well.”

Custom Build Home Interior Design Ideas

Built on rural farmland in the Dallas suburb of Bartonville, Texas, this Southern Louisiana-inspired Mediterranean home took a big page out of A. Hays Town’s architectural book.

Entry Hall

With custom details that could be found in the old Creole houses of New Orleans, this empty-nesters dream home was that of a personal mix of styles with comfortable high-end taste.

Living Room

Massive metal casement windows and doors were inspired by modern renovations of historic homes in Europe. An embroidered pillow fabric in the Living Room informed the color palette of soft greens, teals and rich browns.

The client desired a look straight out of New Orleans and Traci delivered bringing in whimsical floral pieces atop traditional furnishings while still maintaining a modern color scheme full of grays, whites and clean lines.

Home-Sweet-Home

“We incorporated a lot of where we came from, so the house feels grounded,” the wife says. “In every room, there’s a touch of something from a family member or from our home state.”

Butler’s Pantry

Nearby, the working and butler’s pantries are illuminated by pendant lights from the church where the couple married in Baldwin, Louisiana. “The couple also have a love of the ocean and water,” Connell says, “so we brought in blues and greens alongside the soft neutrals.”

The kitchen features classic and elegant elements. The white cabinets are painted in Sherwin Williams Snowbound and they have a custom glaze on them.

Barn

Not far from the main residence, builder Clayton Boyd of Clayton Boyd Industries designed a barn for the owners’ three horses that also houses the husband’s office with a bathroom.

Countryside

The barn has been such a hit that it has become a regular destination for friends and family spilling over from the main residence and outdoor entertaining spaces.
