Billy Talent I turns 20!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
On This Day in 2003, Billy Talent released their first album under their new name Billy Talent, as they had to change out their name Pezz due to another band in the US already called Pezz. This album is very special to me as it's my first Billy Talent album (outside of their Hits album) I purchased. This album really showcases Ben's vocal range and how much he can truly scream, hense why I really love this album. Can't go wrong with the old school stuff right?

Song of the day: August 17 2024
Nothing To Lose by Billy Talent
About Billy Talent:
Billy Talent is a Canadian rock band from Mississauga, Ontario. They formed in 1993 with lead vocalist Benjamin Kowalewicz, guitarist Ian D'Sa, bassist Jonathan Gallant, and drummer Aaron Solowoniuk. There have been no lineup changes, although Solowoniuk has been on hiatus from the band since 2016 due to a relapse of multiple sclerosis. In the three decades since their inception, Billy Talent has sold well over a million physical albums in Canada alone and nearly 3 million albums internationally. During their most successful period, they were ranked as one of the top 10 best-selling native bands in Canada.

About Nothing To Lose:
“Nothing to Lose” is the eleventh track, and fourth single, from Billy Talent’s self-titled debut album.
This song tells the story of a kid who has no friends, despite what his parents think. He is the invisible kid who keeps to himself, but is bullied. Eventually, he can’t take it anymore and commits suicide.
The theme is based on a true story, as it’s about a 15-year-old boy, named Greg Doucette, from Brampton, Ontario, Canada. He was taunted by his schoolmates from Notre Dame High School before eventually hanging himself in his basement on May 8th, 2002.
The video, directed by Sean Michael Turrell, takes a first-person view of a teenager being harrassed and mocked by bullies and is filmed at Central Technical School in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The protagonist attaches tubing to a car exhaust and places it in the car, thus committing suicide via carbon monoxide poisoning. The video actually ends with an anti-suicide message, urging children and teenagers to call Kids Help Phone, a Canadian telephone service for troubled youth. The video ranked at #28 on the MuchMusic miniseries “MuchMusic’s 50 Most Controversial Videos” due to the scene where the protagonist commits suicide.

Happy 7th Birthday, Afraid of Heights!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
On this day in 2016, Billy Talent released their 5th album "Afraid of Heights." I've always considered this album to be HEAVILY slept on, as most Billy Talent fans didn't care for this album. This would be the first album where Aaron Solowoniuk was not on drums, due to his relapse with MS. Jordan Hastings of Alexisonfire stepped in and filled the slot, and I think he did a phenomenal job! Title track "Afraid of Heights" (both the original and reprise versions), along with "Ghost Ship Of Cannibal Rats" And "Louder Than the DJ" would become some of their most powerful songs to date. Though my favorite track "Rabbit Down the Hole" showcases a very dark yet different side of this band, in addition to how much they experimented with this album.
